Bell-bottoms and Counterculture

When Cher first came on the scene as part of a duo with Sonny Bono in the 1960s, their looks were iconic of the free-love, freewheeling era. Her long, straight locks changed the game for those still wearing beehives.

Bell-bottoms and Counterculture

Matching Furs (1968)

Bang, bang! As a duo, Cher and Sonny often matched in unisex takes on hippie fashion. Items like fur vests gave their looks textures and proportions and shapes that were unconventional for the era.

Matching Furs (1968)

Pop Goddess (1972)

It would be the start of a lifelong trend of strategically placed sequins and fabulous headdresses. This Bob Mackie creation lit up The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour .

Pop Goddess (1972)

Belly Barer (1973)

Cher often revealed her belly button on the Sonny and Cher TV show, which got her in trouble with the network but eventually helped change the rules. Red carpet looks like this, once daring, are now the norm.

Belly Barer (1973)

The Naked Dress (1974)

This daring look created for Cher by Bob Mackie was simply groundbreaking, and has since become a rite of passage for female performers. According to Mackie, it was never about being naked; it was about being bold.

The Naked Dress (1974)

Luau at the Oscars (1974)

Ever one to eschew black-tie formality, Cher showed up to the 1974 Academy Awards ® in a gorgeous floral-print two-piece more evocative of a sarong than a dress, but still high fashion with a couture headpiece and choker.

Luau at the Oscars (1974)

Behold the Unitard (1978)

The pop-star wardrobe staple all began with a bold move from a very body-forward disco diva.

Behold the Unitard (1978)

Nearly Naked Butterfly (1979)

For her album “Prisoner,” Cher went nearly naked once again, in a shimmering Mackie headpiece cascading seamlessly into a matching beaded dress.

Nearly Naked Butterfly (1979)

Risky Red Carpet (1986)

Cher challenged the Academy Awards ® dress code as a presenter in this memorable costume — turning heads and daring to be taken seriously as an actress.

Risky Red Carpet (1986)

Moonstruck (1988)

Her provocatively simple shock dress was the perfect look for clinching the Oscar ® . The diva had arrived.

Moonstruck (1988)

Channeling Cleopatra (1988)

At a Halloween party in Century City, Cher channeled Cleopatra with a wig-headpiece hybrid that screamed statuesque.

Channeling Cleopatra (1988)

Haute Headpiece (1998)

Never comfortable with the commonplace, her gorgeous, woven gown got a bold matching topper at the Academy Awards — a nod to her famous headwear of years past.

Haute Headpiece (1998)

Bigger Is Better (2000)

Who can top a Cher headpiece better than Cher, with this mohawk meets Mad Max tribal warrior crown?

Bigger Is Better (2000)

Return to Form (2010)

Cher stole a page out of her own stylebook and subsequently stole the show at the VMAs paying tribute to the big hair, body-baring unisuit, high boots and leather jacket immortalized in her 1988 “If I Could Turn Back Time” music video.

Return to Form (2010)

Tribal Vibes (2014)

Cher channeled her tribal heritage and diva status in her “Dressed to Kill Tour.”

Cher 'in talks' for new tour after boyfriend Alexander Edwards inspired her to record new music

C her has teased that a new tour could be on the horizon as she credited boyfriend Alexander Edward for getting her back into the recording studio and reminding her "how much I like singing".

The Standard was in attendance at a special "In conversation" event hosted by Greatest Hits Radio’s Ken Bruce and Magic Radio’s Harriet Scott, at Odeon Luxe in London's Leicester Square, where the music icon, 77, was appearing to promote her latest album, Christmas.

It marks her 27th record and her first new music in five years.

Asked by Bruce and Scott why she had decided to finally put out a Christmas album, she didn't shy away from the truth, she admitted it had been her record company's idea.

"Everybody has wanted me to make one forever but I just didn’t want to, you know, I didn’t really feel it," she explained. "I didn’t want to do Silent Night and I didn’t want to do Jingle Bells, I didn’t have any other songs, I’d actually never looked for songs."

That all changed in May of this year when she was handed the track DJ Play A Christmas Song and the rest of the album followed from there.

The song went on to top the US charts, making her the only female artist to have a top 40 hit in seven consecutive decades.

Joining her in that milestone landmark are the Rolling Stones, who have also had at least one new number one on the Billboard charts every decade between the 1960s and 2020s.

It's not surprising therefore that her thoughts have already turned to making another album and her 37-year-old music producer other half Edwards is a key element."Well, I hadn’t made anything for a long time and Alexander said to me when we first met, 'why aren’t you singing?' I said 'I don’t know', I didn’t think of it, I wasn’t inspired," she recalled. "Then he brought me some songs that were really great that I’m going to do on this next album that I’m about to do. I feel like I’m in that groove so I might as well do it because I’d really forgot how much I like singing – you forget!

Adding: "I’m going to start recording it in February."

She also teased that a new tour was on the cards, saying: "We’re talking about it now."

Asked whether the UK was likely to be included, she declared: "I am only famous because of the UK."

She explained: "There was a man named Jack Wood, you must remember Jack Wood, he presented Ready, Steady Go. He came to America and he was lovely and wanted to have us on the show, but people didn’t like us at all. They were really frightened of us, Sonny got beaten up all of the time because we looked so different and you have no idea how different. I mean, the Beatles were cute little guys with nice haircuts and round jackets, you know, Sonny was like hair [long] down to here and we both had fur vests, people just didn’t understand us.

"So Jack said, 'go to London because they will get you there and they will love you'. We said 'well, we don’t have any money', he said 'just sell something or steal something or whatever'. So we came here and it was the truth, people loved us."

You can listen to Cher: In Conversation in full on Magic on December 9 at 6pm, and on Greatest Hits Radio on December 10 at 4pm.

Cherilyn Sarkisian, otherwise known as Cher is an American singer, actress, and television host originally from Beverly Hills, California who is considered one of the most successful female artists of all time.

Often affectionately nicknamed 'The Goddess of Pop', Cher's reputation precedes her as being one of the most successful artists of all time. Her popularity grew when she was part of the successful folk husband–wife duo Sonny & Cher, who scored a hit with 'I Got You Babe'. She capitalised on this popularity and simultaneously began a solo career with her huge hit single 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)' released in 1966 which peaked at #2 in the US.

She established herself as a solo artist off the back of her TV show Sonny & Cher's comedy hour and went on to score number one hits with the singles 'Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves' 'Half-Breed' and 'Dark Lady'. In 1975 she went through a very public divorce from husband Sonny and attempted to make a comeback with 'Take Me Home' which could only be described as a moderate chart success. She did however make a substantial amount though after taking residency in Las Vegas between 1980 and 1982.

She is one of the most successful female artists of all time both commercially and critically, over her career she has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, a special CFDA Fashion Award, three Golden Globe Awards, and a Cannes Film Festival Award. Cher holds the record for being the only artist to ever have a number-one single on a Billboard chart and a top 40 hit on the UK single chart in each of the past six decades. She has sold over 100 million albums worldwide and is one of the world's best selling female artists of all time.

Live reviews

Cher, Valley View San Diego: CHER was AMAZING !! this is my 9th time seeing her and she never disappoints. Her opening act was the talented Cyndi Lauper who delivered an hour opening act with great hits. CHER entered on a huge pedestal to the singing of WOMANS WORLD, and followed that up with Strong Enough - one of my all time favorites. She chatted with the crowd, performed hits new and old. My highlight was Take it Like a Man, where Cher entered in a huge golden trojan horse in a beautiful outfit and danced and sang. She covered her old hits, as well. She had trouble with Dark Lady, as she forget some of the words, but then she recovered and continued on. She joked about it later in the concert and said she had an "old lady moment". She continued on with her hits I found someone, Turn Back Time and Believe, huge successes. her finale was incredible, Cher floated over the audience and performed, I hope you Find it. The crowd loved it, some in tears to this moving ballad. I hope this truly isnt Chers Farewell, Farewell! She delivers great music, great sets, Great humor ! there is only one CHER ! truly an Icon !!

Absolutely phenomenal. Cher gave us everything from start to finish moving through the decades seamlessly. She wore all of the iconic outfits we have come to expect and adore. Of course her interaction with the audience was typical Cher. She joked with us, played to us, and made us feel like she was looking directly at us. The most memorable moment, for me, was her duet with Sonny. She was vulnerable and sang directly to him. She made us believe that his spirit was there with her. I have to acknowledge her dancers because they gave a spectacular performance as well. They flew, twirled, and brought the crowd into the world of Cher. They even took us to the circus in the 1800's. I loved the show and am considering seeing it again in September when she returns to do it all again.

Fabulous show with incredible staging, costumes, graphic projections, dance and musicianship. Cher was superb!

My tip: avoid Paul Young’s support act - a travesty of his hit years with a vocal range of about 3 notes. He C A N N O T sing. #Excruciating! The audience all round us were bored at best but Cher had to work harder to get the atmosphere back up again. Thank goodness she was more than equal to the task!

Cher was tremendous, perfect voice, perfect outfits, perfect body, perfect show.

BB&T Center is not well prepared for this kind of events. The sound was not good at all. The screen was unable to watch from higher seats because all the lighting and sound systems were possitioned on the wrong spot. Very... very disappointed.

Cher is an American singer and actress who got her start as half of Sonny and Cher in the 1960s. She has since amassed international fame with an array of Top 10 hits and screen roles, winning an Oscar for her role in 'Moonstruck.'

Cher

Who Is Cher?

Cher was born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, California. She was raised by her mother Georgia, a model and actress, and grew up in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County with younger half-sister Georganne. The family struggled financially, with Cher having been placed in an orphanage at one point while her mother looked for work. Nonetheless, she knew from a young age that the world of arts and entertainment spoke to her and took up acting as part of her extracurricular activities.

Sonny and Cher

Cher left high school at 16 and moved to Hollywood. She reputedly met Salvatore “Sonny” Bono, who was a protégé of iconic producer Phil Spector , at a coffee shop. (Cher in fact sang backup on such famed Spector songs like the Ronettes’ “Be My Baby.”) Though Sonny wasn’t initially interested in Cher romantically, the two developed a romantic relationship and eventually wed on October 27, 1964.

"I Got You Babe"

The couple worked on their act for a time and became known as Sonny and Cher. Under the Atco label, the duo scored a monumental chart-topper in 1965 with "I Got You Babe." Sonny and Cher had a countercultural persona with distinctive bohemian stylings and continued to release popular singles, as seen with “Baby Don’t Go,” the socially-aware “The Beat Goes On,” “Little Man” and “What Now My Love.” Cher had also signed to Imperial as a solo artist. After releases such as Bob Dylan ’s “All I Really Want to Do” and “Where Do You Go,” she had her first top 5 solo single with “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down).”

TV Variety Show

Yet by the end of the decade, the hits had stopped coming for Sonny and Cher, and the duo faced major financial difficulties due to IRS debt. They thus developed a cabaret act, having already taken on what would be perceived as more adult sensibilities in terms of their image. Their show, which included loads of comedic banter, led to the couple helming a summer replacement telecast for CBS. This in turn led to the launch of their own variety program in 1971, the Emmy-nominated The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour , which ran until 1974. The show also revitalized Sonny and Cher’s music career, and more top 10 hits came in the form of “All I Ever Need Is You” and “A Cowboy’s Work Is Never Done.”

But behind-the-scenes tensions were high, and Cher would later describe Sonny as being a rigid, controlling entity when it came to business. The couple divorced the following year, and Cher had her own Emmy-nominated self-titled TV show which ran from 1975-76.

Songs as a Solo Artist

Cher had started to establish herself as a solo artist during the 1960s. Early on she was known for songs that were provocative in their sensibilities and spoke to her perceived status as an outsider, a mode she would come to embrace over time. She enjoyed a top 10 hit with “You Better Sit Down Kids,” in which she sang from the perspective of a father explaining the realities of a marital split to his children.

For the 1971 album Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves (originally called Cher ), she had the first No. 1 solo hit of her career with the title track, which spoke of a “travelin’ show” family and teen pregnancy. Another top 10 hit, "The Way of Love," found Cher singing to a lover who’s left her for a man. And she reached the top of the charts yet again with the title track from the 1974 album Half-Breed , which presented the ongoing persecution of a partially Native-American narrator stuck between two worlds.

Immediately after her divorce from Sonny, Cher was unable to work as a performer due to contractual entanglements from their business relationships and took on gigs as a model. She later credited executive David Geffen for helping her navigate financial matters and take control of her career.

Cher was again able to reach the pop top 10 by the end of the decade with the string-laden disco number “Take Me Home,” from the 1979 album of the same name on the Casablanca label.

Movies and Oscar Win

'silkwood,' 'mask'.

Having appeared in a handful of screen projects previously, Cher seriously pursued an acting career in the 1980s. She appeared on Broadway in the play Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean in 1982, and reprised the role of Sissy in its film adaptation. She continued to earn the respect of critics and fans alike by turning in a number of strong big-screen performances, taking on the role of Meryl Streep ’s lesbian roommate Dolly Pelliker in the 1983 drama Silkwood . Cher earned a supporting actress Academy Award nomination and Golden Globe for the role. Then in 1985 she starred in the Peter Bogdanovich film Mask as the defiant, emotionally struggling mother of a son with craniodiaphyseal dyaplasia, which radically alters the shape of his face.

'The Witches of Eastwick,' 'Moonstruck'

1987 was a banner year for Cher which saw her starring in three films: the thriller Suspect (with Dennis Quaid ), the mischievous supernatural romp The Witches of Eastwick (with Susan Sarandon , Michelle Pfeiffer and Jack Nicholson ) and the textured romantic comedy Moonstruck , which also starred Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia. Cher portrayed Loretta Castorini, an Italian New Yorker who reclaims her sensuality and goes against convention when pursued by the passionate brother ( Nicolas Cage ) of her fiancé (Danny Aiello). For a widely acclaimed performance in what has become a movie classic, Cher won her first Oscar for Best Actress.

Cher's 'Turn Back Time' Outfit on MTV

Even with the acting accolades, Cher returned to the music business. During the same year of the release of Moonstruck , she released a self-titled album, which featured the pop/rock top 10 comeback “I Found Someone,” an emotional testimonial to new love. More power rock followed with the 1989 album Heart of Stone , which offered two more top 10 hits — “If I Could Turn Back Time” and “Just Like Jesse James.” The music video for “If I Could Turn Back Time” particularly caused a stir, with the singer appearing in a leather jacket and sheer body stocking, serenading a crowd of ecstatic sailors on a military carrier. The outfit was deemed so controversial that MTV would only air the video during nighttime hours.

Over the years, Cher has not only pushed sensibilities with her music but also with her extravagant, unusual costumes and barely-there accouterments. She has routinely worked over the decades with designer Bob Mackie, who has created a series of outfits for the star that are theatrical and unabashedly fun. Cher has also sometimes aimed to make a point with her attire, purposely wearing to the 1986 Academy Awards ceremony a famed black chain-link halter and matching feather headdress, meant as a form of protest over not receiving a nomination for her work in Mask . Fast forward to the 1989 Oscars and she once again went with Mackie in a more understated approach, sporting a streamlined mini-dress with frills.

More Movies, TV and Music Hits

By the end of the ‘80s, Cher had begun to struggle with symptoms related to chronic fatigue syndrome. She continued to do screen work off and on, as seen with the drama/comedy Mermaids (1990), co-starring Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci, the HBO film If These Walls Could Talk (1996) and the historical comedy/drama Tea With Mussolini , co-starring Judi Dench , Maggie Smith and Lily Tomlin . She later starred with popster Christina Aguilera in 2010’s Burlesque , though the movie didn’t fare well commercially, with Cher also critiquing the final product.

'Believe,' 'Strong Enough'

While the ‘80s and early ‘90s saw Cher showing off her rock chops, she scored another top 40 hit with her mainstream pop cover of "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)," off the soundtrack for Mermaids . And the singer once again made her presence known in the clubs as seen with her single “One by One,” off the 1996 album It’s a Man’s World . The 1998 album Believe placed the singer firmly in dance/electronica territory, with the up-tempo title track becoming a huge global hit and selling millions of copies. “Believe” also inspired an enduring trend of music producers relying on vocoders and earned a Grammy for Best Dance Recording, with the empowerment anthem “Strong Enough” reigning on the dance charts as well.

'(This Is) A Song for the Lonely'

Cher released her next studio album, Living Proof , in the United States in 2002, with the set having been released in Europe the previous year. The album featured the single "(This Is) A Song for the Lonely," which did well on the dance charts and was written to honor those affected by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Other tracks on the album included "Alive Again" and "A Different Kind of Love Song." Following Living Proof 's release, Cher said "so long" to performing live with a 325-date farewell tour, which ran from 2002 to 2005.

Emmy Wins and More Club Hits

Cher: the farewell tour.

In 2003 NBC aired one of Cher's live performances as Cher: The Farewell Tour . The program was nominated for six 2003 Emmy Awards and won three, for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special; Outstanding Camerawork, Video for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special; and Outstanding Costumes for a Variety or Music Program.

In 2006 Cher auctioned off furniture, paintings and decorative objects from her home in Malibu, California, as well as a number of personal items, including memorabilia, jewelry and stage costumes. The auction brought in $3.5 million, with a portion of proceeds going to the Cher Charitable Foundation.

Two years later, Cher returned to the stage, despite previously announcing plans to retire from live performances. She debuted a show entitled Cher at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on May 6, 2008, and had performed 192 shows by the end of the series, in February 2011.

'Closer to the Truth'

Cher released her first album in 12 years in September 2013. As she explained to Reuters, Closer to the Truth is "my best effort ever, so I'm happy with that." She enjoyed more dance chart success with album singles “Woman’s World,” “Take It Like a Man” and “I Walk Alone.” Cher returned to touring in March 2014 to promote Closer , but had to cancel dates due to a kidney infection.

Stage Productions

'classic cher'.

On February 8, 2017, the music legend returned to the stage, launching her Classic Cher show at the Park Theater at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Her tour de force performance included some of her greatest hits and costumes designed by Bob Mackie.

In May 2017, the pop legend received the Billboard Icon Award, after a high-voltage performance of her hits "Believe" and "If I Could Turn Back Time." In her acceptance speech, she spoke about the longevity of her music career: "So, I've wanted to do what I do since I was 4 years old. And I've been doing it for 53 years. That is not an applause thing, I'm 71 yesterday. And I can do a five-minute plank, okay? Just saying."

'Mama Mia,' 'The Cher Show'

In 2018, Cher returned to the big screen in Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! , the sequel to the 2008 adaptation of the popular Broadway production, which reunited her with her old co-star Meryl Streep. The artist released an accompanying tribute album, Dancing Queen , and embarked on the Here We Go Again Tour in September.

That year also brought the debut of the jukebox musical The Cher Show , which premiered in Chicago before moving to Broadway. The icon initially offered a mixed review of the production, noting it "needs work," but by April 2019 she was enthusiastic enough to perform with the show's cast on The Tonight Show .

Personal Life

Cher is well-known for speaking forthrightly about her beliefs and experiences, with Streep pointedly stating that the fellow singer/actress refreshingly lacks traditional showbiz veneer. Cher dated actor/director Warren Beatty during her teen years and later was romantically linked to Geffen, actors Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer , musician Richie Sambora and actor/pilot Robert Camilletti.

Married twice, Cher has two children: Her son, Chaz Bono, who was originally named Chastity and underwent female-to-male gender transition in 2008, is from her first marriage to the late Bono, who died in a skiing accident on January 5, 1998. Son Elijah Blue Allman, born in 1976, is from her relationship with musician Gregg Allman, to whom she was briefly married.

In 1998 the singer/actress published her memoir The First Time , as told through a series of short essays. Cher, her mother and her sister were also featured in the 2013 Lifetime documentary Dear Mom, Love Cher , which goes into their family history.

Inside Cher and Cyndi Lauper's friendship of over 20 years as they appear at Hand & Footprint Ceremony together

The "believe" singer has been friends with the "girls just wanna have fun" singer since 2002.

Bryony Gooch

Cher and Cyndi Lauper certainly looked close, as they attended the Hand & Footprint Ceremony. Cyndi took part in the time honored tradition of having her hands and footprint enshrined on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, enlisting Cher and Bebe Rexha for the special occasion.

The "Believe" icon honored the "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" singer, who was the star of the occasion at the TCL Chinese Theater.

"She’s a wonderful, wonderful, crazy, crazy person," Cher said of Cyndi. "I'm a good singer, I'm a pretty good singer, Cyndi is a great singer, she's a genius singer, she's a fabulous person and she's talented."

The duo have been friends for over 20 years, with Cher recalling how she'd performed her hit song "If I Could Turn Back Time" during the Divas concert in 2002.

"And she comes out and blows me away", Cher said of Cyndi. But it seemed she didn't let it get to her, as "we've been friends ever since."

As Cyndi joined Cher on stage at the TCL Chinese Theater, the two icons hugged it out before posing for the moment everyone had been waiting for.

Cher also spoke about how Cyndi made a surprise appearance to honor her at the Kennedys Center in 2018, after claiming she was in Los Angeles. "Of course she lied and she was there, so that was a really good time."

Cyndi would go on to perform "If I Could Turn Back Time" in honor of her friend, and the 78-year-old was notably shocked. In the clip of Cyndi's performance, Cher can be heard yelling from the balcony: "You told me you were going to be in Los Angeles!" to which Cyndi replied with a smile: "I lied."

The "Believe" singer also made it clear that when it came to creating her Christmas album, her first with original material in 10 years, Cyndi was the first person she called in case she wanted to do a duet, even though she had never done any duets with anybody before.

The duo would go on to sing "Put a Little Holiday In Your Heart" together.

Cher, Madonna, And Mariah Carey Squared Off For The "Biggest Diva" Title After Their Tour Rider Demands Were Leaked

Madonna, Cher, and Mariah Carey are some of the biggest divas in the industry, with alleged high-end demands while on tour.

  • Cher, Madonna, and Mariah Carey have iconic diva demands on tour, from fresh flowers to exclusive rooms for their team.
  • Madonna's extensive rider includes room for 200 guests, personal chefs, and yoga instructors, ensuring everything is perfect.
  • Mariah Carey's legendary diva behavior includes demands like champagne with bendy straws, warm fried chicken, and a perfectly cozy room.

Cher , Madonna , and Mariah Carey are three of the most iconic and talented living artists in music . Groundbreaking, inspirational, and ahead of their time, Cher, Madonna, and Carey set the tone for artists today, especially when on tour. However, big talent and celebrity come with big diva moments. After all, no one has a talent quite like these women.

Helping these A-listers is a team of professionals. From hair and makeup to stylists to personal drivers to assistants…. It takes a village to support a diva . Over the years, demands were leaked from these legendary stars, proving that nothing is too out of reach when you’re a diva. Keep reading to learn what the music industry’s top stars allegedly demanded on tour and all about the feud between Madonna and Carey.

Cher, Madonna, And Mariah Carey's Tour Demands Were Allegedly Leaked

While on tour, the stars make a variety of demands to make themselves, their guests, and their team as comfortable as possible. After all, divas can't perform in front of thousands if they're not comfortable. With Cher, Madonna, and Mariah Carey being three of the biggest divas in music, their demands are somewhere in the middle between reasonable and outlandish.

Cher waving to the crowd outside

  • Fresh flowers, including Casa Blanca lilies and gardenias,
  • White interior, including white chairs and tablecloths,
  • Wine: one bottle of fine red and white wine,
  • Snacks like mixed nuts and M&Ms,
  • Six separate rooms: one for Cher, one for her male dancers, one for her female dancers, one for her band, one for her wardrobe and stylists, one for her masseuse, and one incredible room for her fabulous wigs.

Cher And Boyfriend AE Show Solidarity Amid Cannes Clash With Travis Scott

While other divas' demands are more outlandish, a room dedicated to wigs is as diva-esque as it gets.

  • Like Cher, Madonna needed rooms and passes for 200 of her closest friends , colleagues, and staff. This included "30 bodyguards, personal chefs, a yoga instructor, an acupuncturist, and even an on-site dry cleaner,”
  • 20 International phone lines,
  • Fresh flowers like lilies and roses (with stems cut exactly six inches),
  • Hotel furniture must be replaced with her own furniture to get a homey feel.

Madonna Performs In France

The Daily Mail noted, “Madonna has probably the longest list of requirements of any of the world's music stars. She expects things to be just right or it puts her off her stage show." If things aren’t as she requests, shows are delayed . Madonna's lateness happens so often that she was sued during her Celebration Tour .

"[Madonna] requires all furniture be removed from the rooms and replaced with her own pieces that she has shipped in."

Madonna Was Caught Before Her Interview With Charlie Rose Complaining About Her Seat And Camera Angle

Madonna and Cher have diva demands, but backstage demands are minuscule when they're pulling in thousands of screaming fans to see them on tour. While on tour, the queen of high demands is the only Mariah Carey.

  • Cristal champagne had to be on hand (with bendy straws),
  • Beverages like Coke, Fiji Water, Diet Coke, and protein drinks had to be available,
  • Warm fried chicken,
  • Lemons and honey,
  • Two dozen fresh white roses,
  • Vanilla candles throughout the dressing room,
  • Her room must be 75 degrees and patterns must be minimalized,
  • A soft lamp should be in the room so that harsh lighting can be turned off,
  • Sugarless gum.

Mariah Carey and Lenny Kravitz

Mariah Carey And Lenny Kravitz Are Reportedly Dating After Nick Cannon Wants To Reconcile

In 2017, Carey talked about her diva behavior with People.

"I have had diva moments, and then people can’t handle it."

From champagne to furniture, these divas require the best because they are the best!

Mariah Carey, Cher, And Madonna Are Divas With A Feud

Part of being a diva means knowing the talent you possess and the power you have. This can sometimes bring a sense of entitlement and being protective of your career. Because of this, it's rumored that Mariah Carey and Madonna have an ongoing feud.

Mariah Carey's Album 'Glitter' Flopped The Year She Had A Mental Breakdown

Nicki Swift shared that in 1996, Madonna did an interview with Spin where she talked about Carey's stardom and her poorly written movie Glitter. Madonna's words were anything but kind.

"We have to realize that the same country that acquitted O.J. is the same country that makes a complete piece of sh*t movie No.1, that buys Mariah Carey records. It's this homogeneity. But it's got nothing to do with art."

When MTV mentioned Madonna's words to Carey, she responded in the most diva way possible . "I really haven't paid attention to Madonna since I was in seventh or eighth grade when she used to be popular," Carey said.

But Carey isn't the only one who has an issue with Madonna. Cher has also had a longstanding feud with the "Vogue" singer. In an interview with CBS, Cher was asked about her feud with Madonna. Similar to Carey, Cher didn't hold back.

"She acts like a spoiled brat all the time. And it seems to me when you reach the kind of acclaim that she's reached—and you can do whatever you want to do—you should be a little bit more magnanimous, and little bit less of a c--t."

Cher had nothing nice to say about Madonna over the years, including calling Madonna a "spoiled brat." It appears in Hollywood, becoming friends with those you're competing with isn't common. It's hard work being a diva, but these three women will forever go down as the best of the best in their industry.

Cher Wins Royalties Lawsuit Against Sonny Bono’s Widow Over Decades-Old Divorce Settlement

Cher's case against Mary Bono — a messy mix of royalties, termination rights and divorce law — ends in a ruling for the superstar singer.

  • By Bill Donahue

Cher

Cher has won her lawsuit against Sonny Bono’s widow over royalties to “I Got You Babe” and other hits after a federal judge ruled that Mary Bono must continue paying the superstar her cut under the couple’s decades-old divorce settlement.

More than 20 years after Sonny’s death, Mary argued that she no longer needed to pay royalties to Cher thanks to copyright law’s so-called termination right — a provision of federal law that allows songwriters and their heirs to win back control of their intellectual property rights decades after they gave them away.

Cher Turns Back Time on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Slam, Warns She’ll ‘Have Some Words to Say…

Trending on billboard.

The ruling means that Cher will continue to receive publishing royalties for her catalog of songs created with Sonny, including “The Beat Goes On” and “Baby Don’t Go.” According to Wednesday’s ruling, more than $400,000 in royalties owed to Cher have piled up since the dispute began.

In a statement to Billboard on the ruling, Mary Bono’s attorney Daniel J. Schacht praised the judge for confirming that his client now owns Sonny’s copyrights, but said the judge “got the law wrong on copyright terminations.”

“His ruling, if left standing, would hurt songwriters and creators by allowing not just former spouses, but also publishers and labels, to circumvent the Copyright Act and keep shares of royalties even after terminations,” Schact said.

An attorney for Cher did not return a request for comment from Billboard .

Sonny and Cher started performing together in 1964 and married in 1967, rising to fame with major hits like “I Got You Babe,” “The Beat Goes On” and “Baby Don’t Go.” But the pair split up in 1974, finalizing their divorce with a settlement in 1978. Under that deal, Sonny retained ownership of their music rights, but Cher was granted a half-share of all publishing royalties in perpetuity.

That agreement stayed in effect for years, including after Bono died in a 1998 skiing accident. But in 2016, Mary and other heirs invoked the termination right, seeking to take back control of Sonny’s copyrights from his publishers. And in 2021, they informed Cher that they would soon stop paying royalties under the earlier agreement.

Cher quickly sued , seeking a ruling that she was still owed her 50% cut regardless of who owns the copyrights since a federal copyright provision had no bearing on a state-law asset settlement. Mary fired back a few months later, claiming that termination rights could not be waived by contract and that Cher’s arguments would “subvert” the purpose of the law.

In Wednesday’s ruling, Judge Kronstadt sided with Cher’s arguments. He ruled that the divorce settlement with Sonny gave Cher a “contractual right to receive financial compensation,” rather than the kind of control over his copyrights that could be voided using the termination right: “A right to receive royalties is distinct from a grant of copyright,” the judge wrote.

Mary can appeal the ruling to a federal appeals court, potentially reprising her argument that the ruling for Cher would undermine the goal of Congress to allow creators to regain control of the revenue from their copyrighted works.

In his statement to Billboard on Wednesday, her attorney Schact said that regardless of how the case plays out, Mary and Cher would continue to work “collaboratively and respectfully” in order to “uphold and honor Sonny’s musical legacy.”

Cher returns to x to defend boyfriend ae's brawl: 'gotta love him'.

cher on tour

A week after her Alexander "A.E." Edwards got into a fight with Travis Scott at a Cannes after-party, Cher has returned to X after a long absence to defend her man!

Cher, 78, wrote of A.E., 37, "I’m Proud of Alexander. He Didn’t Start The fight Against 2 Men,… He finished it, Gotta Love  Him."

TMZ reports the brawl, which happened at Richie Akiva's party, involved Scott and rapper Southside, and was ignited when Scott reportedly dissed Tyga — a close pal of A.E.'s. A.E. came to Tyga's defense.

The run-in did not have lasting effects among the four men. A.E., smiling, told the outlet on Wednesday, “It’s all good. I don’t want to fight. I don’t want to initiate that sh*t. I’m gonna protect myself and my people.”

A.E. also noted that Cher was on his side all along, saying, "Whatever I'm with, my bitch with it, too." That's a quote from Future's song "GTA."

To avoid offending Cher and her fans, A.E. quickly amended his words to "my woman."

It was an eventful week for the ageless pop icon — on Thursday, Cher won a copyright lawsuit against the widow of her ex-husband Sonny Bono. People magazine reports she had filed suit in 2021 over royalty payments on music from her time as one half of Sonny & Cher. A California judge sided with Cher, ruling that she is owed over $418,000 in unpaid royalties.
