How Chase Sapphire travel insurance saved my family over $1,500

Planning a dream vacation is always exciting. But no matter how carefully you plot out the details, sometimes life throws a wrench in the works.

Unfortunately, that's what happened on a recent trip that I took with my family earlier this year. Luckily, my Chase Sapphire Reserve® and its travel protections came to the rescue right when we needed them, saving us over $1,500 all told.

Here's what happened and how we were able to leverage my card's benefits to avoid losing a lot of money.

Planning our dream vacation ... then canceling it

In February, my husband, our son and I were all set for an incredible safari adventure. We were going to stay at the Retreats at Sayari in Tanzania, where lions, cheetahs and elephants are often spotted roaming freely around the area. After that, we planned to end the trip with a few days of relaxation at Mango House Seychelles, LXR Hotels and Resorts — a luxury hotel on the Seychelles' largest island , Mahe.

We had been planning our trip for months, figuring out the logistics and how to save the most money on such a grand journey. We booked our flights using my Chase Sapphire Reserve® card and redeemed some of our Ultimate Rewards points to reduce the cost of the trip.

Redeeming the points directly through Chase Travel℠ at a rate of 1.5 cents apiece completely covered the cost of our three tickets on a Kenya Airways hopper flight from Nairobi to the Seychelles.

We also transferred some of our leftover points to Qatar Airways Avios and used them to book a portion of our trip in the airline's luxurious business-class QSuites ; we paid the balance on the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Despite using points for part of the journey, the out-of-pocket expense was still several thousand dollars.

With everything squared away, we eagerly counted down the months and days until our trip. However, just one day before our departure, our son came down with the flu. Traveling with our sick child was out of the question, especially on a complicated itinerary like this, where we may not be able to seek medical care easily if we needed it.

So, with heavy hearts, we canceled the entire trip. While we managed to get our money and points back for the flights, the airlines hit us with cancellation fees. We had to pay $327 to Kenya Airways and $1,080 for two tickets on Qatar Airways, totaling just over $1,500 in fees. The third Qatar Airways ticket was booked on another card and it was fully refundable, so we didn't have to worry. Still, ouch.

Benefits of Chase Sapphire Reserve's travel insurance

Feeling the sting of those fees, I decided to explore the travel insurance benefits provided by my Chase Sapphire Reserve . This card offers a plethora of protections that many cardholders, myself included, often overlook. But they can come in handy for situations like mine, and that's exactly what they're intended for.

Here are some of the travel protections of the Chase Sapphire Reserve , specifically.

Trip cancellation and interruption insurance

This benefit covers up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for nonrefundable travel expenses if your trip is canceled or interrupted due to sickness, severe weather and other covered situations. As with any type of insurance, be sure to read the terms and conditions carefully to ensure that your trip and circumstances will be eligible.

Trip delay reimbursement

This covers expenses like meals and lodging if your travel is delayed more than six hours or requires an overnight stay for a covered reason.

Baggage delay insurance

This type of insurance reimburses you for essential purchases such as clothes or toiletries if your baggage is delayed more than six hours.

Lost luggage reimbursement

This protection will reimburse you up to $3,000 per person per covered trip if your luggage is lost or damaged. Note that certain items like electronics and jewelry are not covered.

Travel and emergency assistance services

This service provides legal and medical referrals or other travel assistance when you encounter problems away from home. This service does not cover the cost of these services, but you will have help finding them.

Emergency medical and dental benefit

This benefit reimburses travelers up to $2,500 for medical expenses if you or an immediate family member get sick or injured 100 miles or more from home.

My experience filing a Chase Sapphire travel insurance claim

After brushing up on these benefits, I figured my situation should be eligible for the card's trip interruption and cancellation benefit. I decided to file a claim for the $1,500 in airline cancellation fees.

Filing a trip interruption and cancellation claim with Chase was straightforward in my case, but it required patience, persistence and diligence (and we have had reports of issues dealing with Eclaims from readers in the past).

I used the online form available through the Eclaims Line website . The form asked for detailed information about our trip, including:

• The reason for the cancellation
• Our flight itineraries
• Medical records
• Receipts of expenses
• The airlines' cancellation clauses for our tickets

After submitting my initial claim, I had several back-and-forth calls and emails with Chase; the company requested additional documents and clarifications, such as written proof of the airlines' cancellation policies, documentation of the cancellation fees I had paid and more. While this part of the process was time-consuming, I knew it was important to be thorough and responsive to expedite the approval.

And just remember that there are time limits on when you can submit a claim. With Chase Sapphire Reserve's trip interruption and cancellation insurance, you have to contact Eclaims within 20 days of your trip cancellation to have the chance of being covered.

Finally, after a couple of months of providing the necessary documentation and answering follow-up questions, we received approval for our claim. In the meantime, we covered the cancellation fees by putting them on our Chase Sapphire Reserve.

I started the claim process around Feb. 15. In the first week of May, about 78 days later, $1,507 was directly deposited into our bank account. The relief was immense. Knowing that we had this safety net gave us peace of mind and softened the blow of our canceled trip.

It saved us more than $1,500 and provided a safety net that turned a potentially major financial hit into a manageable situation.

Chase Travel Is Growing as Fast as Booking Holdings But Faces ‘Headwinds’

If a soft economy is causing luxury travelers to limit their discretionary spending, that's sour news for Chase Travel in the short term. But over the long term, Chase Travel and some of its banking peers are trending upwards in travel.

Chase Travel grew sales last year at a pace on par with Booking Holdings and far ahead of Expedia Group.

Still, Chase Travel is a fraction of their size and it’s been around only a few years – it launched its new brand identity just this year.

And it reported at its annual investor day earlier this week that “macro travel headwinds” were impacting its profit margins. Booking Holdings CEO Glenn Fogel, meanwhile, said he saw “resiliency in global leisure travel demand” in the first quarter.

Chase Travel, which skews toward travelers looking for premium trips, is seeing softness among luxury-oriented travelers. Marianne Lake, CEO of Consumer & Community Banking, which includes travel, told investors that “higher income segments are showing lower growth with slowing discretionary spend, including in travel and luxury retail.”

What the Numbers Say

Chase Travel, a division of JPMorgan Chase, said its aim is to attract new customers and to gain share from competitors, which in the case of Booking Holdings and Expedia, have been around for decades.

Let’s look at the latest gross bookings numbers, which is the total amount of travel sold, not revenue, at Chase Travel compared to Booking and Expedia.

Chase Travel grew its gross bookings 25% year-over-year in 2023, edging out Booking Holdings at 24%.

Expedia Group, which was putting the finishing touches on rolling its Vrbo vacation rental unit onto a common Expedia-Hotels.com tech platform last year, lagged with growth at just 10%.

Chase Travel, of course, should be growing faster given that it’s essentially a travel startup. It was just 6.6% the size of Booking Holdings in gross bookings in 2023, and 9.6% the size of Expedia Group. It’s notable that Booking grew at a similar pace.

In addition, Expedia supplies a major portion of Chase Travel’s hotel supply. So gross bookings growth at Chase Travel is good news for Expedia Group — unless a chunk of Chase Travel’s customers would have otherwise booked at Expedia.

At JPMorgan’s investor day a year ago, the company said Chase Travel was on track to do $10 billion in sales in 2023, which it achieved, and $15 billion in 2025. Chase didn’t explicitly reiterate that $15 billion target for its travel business this week. However, it may be folded into a $30 billion target for all of its commerce platforms that Chase articulated a few days ago.

What Else Did Chase Travel Do in 2023 and 2024?

Along with the official launch of Chase Travel in 2024, it ran its first national multimedia brand campaign, Where Travelers Go . [You can also view the ad below.]

The company now has six airport lounges — Expedia and Booking have none — including two it opened this year at LaGuardia and JFK. Six more are in the pipeline.

Chase Travel offers more than 350,000 hotels, and last year it launched a premium hotel collection called The Edit, which now has 800 properties.

In late 2023, it began enabling cardholders to book Southwest’s leisure fares with points or cash — and that’s something that no other credit card companies or online travel agencies have announced they can do. Google Flights began displaying Southwest’s flights for the first time this week. Southwest is one of the largest domestic airlines in the U.S.

Among other data points that Chase Travel released this week:

• Its bookings increased 12% in the first quarter year over year;
• Chase Travel attracted 3.5 million unique customers, a 19% jump, and they booked 9 million trips in 2023.

Should you redeem points to pay for a trip instead of using cash or transfer them to a loyalty program partner to get better value? You'll need to do a little homework to find the right answer as each situation is different.

Chase points are the currency you earn when using cards like Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Chase Sapphire Reserve® . They are superior in many ways to other point currencies because  you earn more than one penny in value  per point with these two cards. With the travel portal, you can redeem points to pay for an entire trip or you can use a mix of points and cash to cover a travel booking. You can also pay all in cash, earning 5 to 10 points per $1 spent, depending on the card you have. Using points for travel is the most valuable way to extract value from Chase Ultimate Rewards® for most people.

It's an efficient website, but some irritants snag even savvy travelers. Let's dig into Chase's travel portal's good and bad. You'll find that it is mostly good, if not great.

Chase cards vary in earning and redemption benefits so you will want to pay attention to which one you use, especially if you have more than one card. Here’s a primer on what you can and cannot do with Ultimate Rewards® points.

Log in to your account, then navigate to the Chase Ultimate Rewards® tab on the right of the screen. If you have more than one card that earns this currency, you can see each balance and select the account from which you want to redeem points.

Once you select the card, you’ll be taken to a homepage that shows the points you have earned and how you can redeem them. We recommend sticking to travel redemptions rather than using points for merchandise as the value diminishes significantly with the latter.

Select the "Travel" tab at the top of the screen. From here, you can decide whether to transfer points to a partner or redeem them as cash for a trip.

One of the best perks of using this travel portal to make a points redemption is that you still earn frequent flyer miles on most airline tickets since these are booked as a revenue ticket (not as an award redemption like when using airline miles to book a flight).

How to book award flights in Chase's travel portal

This is one of the more popular features of using points, but keep in mind it doesn't feature all airlines, which can be frustrating. Even if you find a flight on an airline's website or third-party booking site, it doesn't mean it will be available at Chase.

Enter the relevant details in the search bar to find a flight. Results can be filtered by stops, airline or price. Another benefit of this portal is that you aren't subject to award seat availability in the same way you might be when redeeming miles through an airline's program.

If there is a seat that could be bought with cash, you can usually redeem points for it. Plain and simple.

Compare how many miles you would need if booking directly with the airline with what Chase is charging.

If it would cost fewer points to book directly with the airline, you’ll want to use miles instead. For example, Delta co-branded American Express cardholders can often redeem their miles like cash on Delta’s website (at 1 cent per mile’s value). That’s just average, but if it is cheaper than what Chase is charging, consider that the better option. But don’t forget that airlines will add on taxes and fees when redeeming miles . Airfare booked with Chase Ultimate Rewards® points don't have additional costs tacked on — these are already bundled into the fare.

Another important note is that some low-cost airlines like Allegiant don't appear in search results. If you want to travel on a budget airline, then you'll need to visit those websites to compare fares.

You can pay in cash, points or a combination. Chase will display particular details about your fare, like whether assigned seats or checked bags are included. This may not take into account any elite status perks you hold.

How to book hotels in Chase's travel portal

You can also redeem points for hotel stays using Ultimate Rewards® points. This is great news, especially when staying at hotels where you may not have  elite status  or don't care about elite perks or points earned.

Keep in mind that when making a reservation outside a hotel’s official reservation channels, you won’t earn points in its program or be able to take advantage of elite status benefits. So if you have status with a hotel chain, this isn't the best value unless you are willing to forgo those benefits.

Making a reservation is straightforward. Enter the city and travel dates to see a list of hotels available for redemption. Then, you can redeem points or pay in cash for your trip.

Like with flights, compare the cost of Chase Ultimate Rewards® points with the number of points a hotel’s program is charging. A particular favorite is World of Hyatt, which still uses an award chart and, as a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards®, can often deliver more favorable deals when using Hyatt’s points rather than Chase points.

For example, it would cost about 9,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards® points to redeem a night at Hyatt Place London Heathrow Airport. But, if you transfer points to World of Hyatt, you would need 5,000 points for the same night’s stay.

One of the booking tabs also leads to the Chase Luxury Hotel & Resort Collection . This subset of high-end hotels delivers bonus perks like free breakfast, a $100 hotel credit and room upgrades, depending on the property and other things.

You can book directly through Chase or redeem points and be eligible. It’s nice to have elite status-style perks at a hotel where you may not have status or that doesn't have a loyalty program.

How to book car rentals in Chase's travel portal

This is a great place to reserve rental cars using points, and Chase rental car insurance benefits apply when using the card and paying with points. But, for that to be the case, you will want to pay for part of the rental in cash so the insurance benefits are activated. To do that, pay with a combination of cash and points, and decline the rental company's insurance first.

How to book activities in Chase's travel portal

Activities available for booking through Chase's travel portal include tours and experiences at home or when traveling and airport transfers. Price comparison plays a role here, too, since many hotel brands have their own platforms like Marriott Bonvoy Moments or FIND Experiences from World of Hyatt. These allow you to redeem points for experiences.

Check which program is cheaper before redeeming Chase points if you find similar options in either program.

How to book cruises in Chase's travel portal

Since cruise bookings can be more complex, you will need to call Chase Ultimate Rewards® at 855-234-2542 to make a reservation. There are many ways to earn multiple points when booking a cruise that may be better than using Chase, but when redeeming points for a cruise , there can be a lot of value.

Using Chase's portal to make a travel reservation is also strategic, as depending on your card, you can earn a healthy stash of points this way. Just be sure to compare the benefits you can earn with the opportunity cost of booking elsewhere.

Benefits of booking travel in Chase's portal

Let’s say you have a premium card like Chase Sapphire Reserve® . It earns 5x points per $1 when booking flights through the portal. The sweet spot is when using this card for hotel stays and rental cars booked via the portal for 10x points per dollar spent. Consider what’s in your wallet, and decide which card will net the most points.

Another benefit is that you will earn miles from flights booked through the portal, even when redeeming Chase Ultimate Rewards® points since these are viewed as a revenue ticket.

Remember, you will want to compare if it is cheaper to redeem airline miles directly through a carrier’s redemption program or if you can use fewer points by redeeming Chase points via the portal.

Sometimes it might make more sense to transfer points from Chase to an airline partner when redeeming a flight (or a hotel program when making a hotel stay). Be as vigilant with price comparison when redeeming miles and points as you would when using cash.

Does Chase's travel portal price match?

No. You cannot submit a lower fare elsewhere for a price guarantee here since this isn't a publicly available site. It is only available to those who have a Chase card.

What else you need to know

When booking through this reservation site, keep in mind that most airlines and hotels cannot assist directly with a reservation. They see this as a third-party booking through Expedia and will direct you to Chase's agents.

Many travelers report the experience can be frustrating when travel disruptions or cancellations occur. Agents are friendly but can sometimes be limited in their abilities, often reading prompts on their screens in international call centers.

It can be a hazard booking a reservation with a third party, but the trade-off in redeeming points is worth it for some travelers.

How chase sapphire reserve's travel insurance made a family crisis a little easier, i hadn't thought about the policy that came with my card. now it's one of my favorite features..

In September 2023, my fiance and I were about to leave on a road trip to New Orleans for my birthday. We had been dreaming of this vacation for more than two years.

Then I got a text from my dad: My grandmother had fallen and broken her hip. She wasn't going to make it and was in hospice.

We unpacked the car and I canceled the vacation rental I had booked. The next few days were spent going back and forth to my grandmother's facility. One night shortly before she died, I was stewing over the whole situation: I was losing someone important and had to cancel my dream vacation . On top of that, I was out nearly $500. Because I canceled the rental after the deadline for a full refund, I was only eligible to get back $243 back of the $717 I paid for the house.

I write about insurance almost every day. But when planning my own trips, like most people, I never imagine anything will go wrong. I was mad at myself for not getting travel insurance .

I love to travel and had been thinking about applying for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card for years: It has an annual $300 travel credit , airport lounge access and reimbursement for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® — plus 10X points on hotels and 5X on flights booked through Chase Travel℠. I hesitated, though, because of the $550 annual fee . I finally pulled the trigger in early 2023. My fiance and I were planning several international trips and I figured out that we'd be spending enough on bookings to come out ahead.

I paid for a flight to Tokyo with the 60,000 points I earned from the welcome bonus offered at that time. (The welcome bonus is now up to 75,000 points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months of opening the card.)

We used the travel credit toward a luxury hotel on a trip to Toronto and, thanks to the card's Priority Pass benefit, relaxed in the airport's Plaza Premium Lounge before our flight home. Plus, because the Chase Sapphire Reserve doesn't have foreign transaction fees, shopping in Canada didn't come with any unpleasant extra charges.

But I hadn't really looked into the credit card's travel insurance policy before. Turns out it includes:

• Trip cancellation insurance. Reimburses prepaid non-refundable expenses for trips canceled or cut short due to injury or illness, death in the family, severe weather and other extraordinary situations, up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 for the total trip. 
• Trip delay reimbursement. Refunds expenses relating to delays longer than six hours or requiring an overnight stay, up to $500 per ticket booked with the card. 
• Baggage delay insurance. Reimburses up to $100 per day for five days if your carrier misplaces your bags for more than six hours. 
• Lost luggage reimbursement. Luggage lost by the carrier is covered, up to $3,000 per passenger. 
• Emergency evacuation and transportation. Transport required for illness or injury is covered up to $100,000.
• Emergency medical and dental coverage. Covers up to $2,500 in medical expenses for incidents occurring more than 100 miles from home. 
• Rental car collision damage waiver. Reimburses up to $75,000 if your rental is stolen or in a collision. Kicks in before your auto policy, so you can avoid a premium increase.

Chase Sapphire's offerings are on par with a standalone policy you'd buy from a travel insurance company for about 3% to 5% of a trip's non-refundable expenses. Plus, bundling travel insurance with your card saves you the trouble of getting a new policy with every trip.

Reading the fine print, I couldn't find a reason why my policy with Chase wouldn't cover the balance of our New Orleans reservation. I gathered details of my original booking and refund from the home-share app, a note from a hospice nurse and a copy of my grandmother's death certificate.

Filing an insurance claim is never fun but the process with Chase was relatively painless — I completed the form and submitted my documentation entirely from my phone. Six weeks later, I received an email that my claim had been approved. The $474 was automatically deposited into my checking account, so there was no hassle with a paper check.

I never wanted to file that claim. I wish we had driven to New Orleans, come home, and shared our stories about our adventures with my grandmother. But, sometimes, life has other plans.

The experience convinced me that travel insurance is a must — and that I made the right decision with my Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points are earned by using your Chase branded card on everyday purchases. When you use your Chase card(s), you can also earn points by making purchases on:

Depending on the Chase credit card you use, you can be eligible for a wide range of perks and rewards. All Chase family cards, such as Freedom ® , Sapphire ® and Ink ® , earn points that can be redeemed on the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal.

To access the portal, go to the booking platform at www.chasetravel.com or login to your Chase Ultimate Rewards account and go to your Chase credit card’s main dashboard.

How to book flights through Chase Travel portal

Rather than making your flight purchases externally, book your flights using the Chase Travel portal so you can get rewards on airfare. To do this, access the travel portal and search for the flight you want. You can filter your search by cost, airline, departure/arrival time and departure airport.

Once you’ve found the flight of your choice, select your option and purchase your flight using your Chase card. If you have Ultimate Rewards points available, you can use them to pay for all or part of your flight, and/or other travel-related purchases.

Similar to flights, you can redeem your Ultimate Rewards for hotel reservations. To do this, search by destination to see available hotels. You can narrow your search by filtering for price/amenities/ratings, type of property, number of bedrooms, neighborhood and more.

Select your hotel option, then continue to confirm your booking using your Chase card or redeeming your Ultimate Rewards to help make your purchases.

You can use the portal to book rental cars, activities and other travel-related purchases. To book a cruise line, you need to call directly.

For car rentals, be sure to use the appropriate points connected to your specific card to get additional perks, such as car insurance.

MINNEAPOLIS  — The summer travel season is now in full swing. And while the average cost of a flight is down compared to last year, there are still ways to save.

So, what's the best credit card for travel perks? Good Question.

More swipes equal more flights when your credit card rewards you for spending. 

"I have the United Adventure Card," said Katie Converse as she walked through Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.

"The card I use is a Chase Sapphire Card," added traveler Luke Bonney.

"The first one I got was called Capitol One Rewards," said Rebecca Hermos, who was traveling with her daughter, Rosalie.

All three agree that cashing in your miles and points feels great, especially if it lands them a free plane ticket.

The options for picking plastic that pays off feel endless, so what's best? Is it a card that offers travel miles? What about points? Getting cashback is also tempting.

"My weakness is this (card) also has that thing where you can delete purchases," said Hermos about her cashback option that eliminates purchases from her bill.

First tip: Know the difference between an airline credit card and a travel credit card.

An airline credit card lets you accrue miles to earn a free flight. They also include perks for faster boarding, free checked bags and the chance to earn "elite" status for how often you use the airline. The catch is you are tied to that specific airline.

"Sometimes they have a spending limit that if you achieve you get extra miles," said Converse of her United Airlines card.

Travel credit cards are more flexible with your rewards.

You get points, which can converted to get tickets to multiple airlines, as well as hotels and even cashback.

"You're not boxed in," said Hermos. "What if Delta doesn't fly where you want when you want?"

So, which is the better choice? It depends on your travel and spending habits. 

According to The Points Guy, airline credit cards are great if you fly often and if your local airport is a hub for that airline. Converse has a United Airlines card, in part, because Denver International Airport is a United hub.

If you fly less frequently and like to keep your options open for multiple airlines, as well as hotel stays, travel credit cards might be best.

"I know people who have a Southwest card and a United card and a Delta card," Converse said.

Why is it a good idea to only have one or just a few credit cards with rewards?

"I rack up more rewards and that way I'm not spread too thin," said Converse. 

She makes a good point. By limiting the number of perks credit cards, owners have a chance to maximize the rewards. It also puts them on a path to achieving a higher status with certain airlines.

Another tip to remember is to use the points quickly as they can lose value over time. That's why some financial experts say cashback is the most valuable option, especially when used immediately.

Lastly, pay your credit card balance each month in full. If not, the interest rate on your bill could lead to charges that outweigh the card's perks.

Some cards carry a high annual fee pushing $500 or more. Keep that in mind when choosing a card and whether your usage of the benefits offsets those initial costs. 

Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins absent as Cincinnati Bengals begin organized team activities

Cincinnati Bengals wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins were among four players not in attendance as the team completed its first voluntary organized team activity on Tuesday.

Newly signed right tackle Trent Brown and defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins also were not present for the workout.

Chase’s absence comes as a bit of a surprise as he reported for this part of the voluntary portion last year. Higgins’ absence is related to his contract dispute with the Bengals . The Bengals and Higgins were unable to come to an agreement on a long-term deal, and the team placed the franchise tag on him this offseason. Higgins has not yet signed the one-year franchise tag, so he's not currently under contract.

Head coach Zac Taylor was asked if he thinks Chase and Higgins’ absences will impact timing with Joe Burrow as the quarterback returns to the field following season-ending wrist surgery. Cincinnati’s sixth-year head coach doesn’t foresee it being an issue given the familiarity the two receivers have with the Bengals’ offense.

“No, I think that they'll get to work in at the necessary time,” Taylor said.  “We have a high turnout for voluntary workouts. I told the guys I understand it's voluntary. I appreciate them showing up. The guys that don't are still working hard elsewhere and they'll be back at the right times. And the beauty is we know those guys, we know what they're about and that they'll be ready and focused when it's time to come back."

New Bengals also absent

Rankins and Brown’s absences are different in that both players are new to Cincinnati’s offensive and defensive schemes. They could benefit from being around the team during the voluntary offseason period for several reasons. Taylor remains confident in Brown and Rankins’ approaches due to the fact both players are established veterans.

The Bengals signed Rankins to a two-year contract during free agency this March. He’s expected to play a significant role in defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s scheme as an interior pass rusher. Brown was part of Cincinnati’s second wave of free-agent signings and is expected to start at right tackle after signing a one-year deal.

“There will be plenty of time where they're here when they get the chance to make sure that they're familiar with it,” Taylor said of Brown and Rankins’ absences. “They have the information, so I know that they're staying on top of it. And when they get here and are able to get those reps, I know that those two guys are vets and they'll be in a real good spot.”Rankins and Brown will be expected to attend the Bengals’ mandatory minicamp in mid-June, as will Chase. Higgins technically doesn’t have to report for the three-day camp because he has yet to sign his tag and is technically not under contract with the Bengals until he does so.

Friday’s preholiday travel breaks the record for the most airline travelers screened at US airports

ATLANTA (AP) — A record was broken  ahead of the Memorial Day weekend  for the number of airline travelers screened at U.S. airports, the Transportation Security Administration said Saturday.

More than 2.9 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports on Friday, surpassing a previous record set last year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, according to the transportation security agency.

“Officers have set a new record for most travelers screened in a single day!” the TSA tweeted. “We recommend arriving early.”

The third busiest day on record was set on Thursday when just under 2.9 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports.

In Atlanta, the world’s busiest airport had its busiest day ever. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport broke a traffic record on Thursday when 111,000 passengers, airlines crew and airport employees were screened at security checkpoints. The second busiest day followed on Friday when 109,960 people were screened, according to the TSA

With 104.6 million passengers, the Atlanta airport was the busiest in the world last year, according to Airports Council International.

U.S. airlines  expect to carry  a record number of passengers this summer. Their trade group estimates that 271 million travelers will fly between June 1 and August 31, breaking the record of 255 million set  last summer .

AAA predicted this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years, with 43.8 million people expected to roam at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday — 38 million of them taking vehicles.

The annual expression of wanderlust that accompanies the start of the summer  travel season  is happening at a time when Americans tell pollsters  they are worried  about the economy and the direction of the country.

In what had long been celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, observed on the last Monday in May.

HOUSTON – A fleeing suspect who kept Houston police officers on their toes Monday morning has been captured after going on a string of crime sprees this month, according to the Houston Police Department.

The suspect was identified as 30-year-old Robert Johnson.

Houston police described Monday’s event as an “extremely complex scene” as the investigation involving Johnson dates back three weeks ago.

On May 1, a Houston police officer reportedly saw a white BMW driving recklessly in northeast Houston and attempted to stop the vehicle. Johnson, the suspected driver, failed to stop, and a chase ensued.

Police said the officer had to stop the chase after the BMW driver started to run red lights, almost crashed into other vehicles and reached speeds of 100 mph.

On Monday, as the chase investigation continued, officers identified the white BMW at an apartment complex located in the 10200 block of Lansdale Drive.

When officers approached the vehicle, they reportedly advised Johnson that they had a warrant to seize the vehicle because it was tied to a chase. Johnson initially complied and removed his 5-year-old daughter from inside the BMW, placing her on the curb, according to HPD.

When officers asked him to step back, they say he jumped back into the vehicle. A struggle broke out between the man and the officers. When the second officer, identified as an HPD sergeant, tried to help, police say Johnson got out of the BMW reportedly and knocked the sergeant down to the ground.

The other officer reportedly saw Johnson was armed and shot at him, but he missed.

Johnson ran to another apartment complex, about 1.2 miles away from the scene, police say, and robbed a woman at gunpoint for her cellphone.

That area was secured, and the BMW driver was found and arrested.

No one was hurt in the officer-involved shooting or the armed robbery.

During the vehicle search, investigators said they found narcotics and a semi-automatic pistol with a magazine inside. Officers are still searching for the second pistol used during the armed robbery.

Police say Johnson is a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history.

The officers involved were placed on administrative duty, a part HPD’s standard protocol. Bodycam footage will be released within 30 days as part of the department’s officer-involved shooting procedures.
