The Complete Guide to Channagiri Trek

Channagiri, towards the northwest of the Nandi Hills chain, is a less-frequented trail in Chikkaballapura. Locally, it is better known as Channakeshava Betta. It is the source of the North Pinakini River and has an Omkareshwara Temple at the top. But there is more to this hill than its famous landmarks. It’s a great day trek.

The trail takes you through a surprising variety over two quick hours. What starts through wild shrubbery and occasional eucalyptus and tamarind trees, enters dense deciduous forests, and big boulder sections and reaches a pinnacle with a stunning 360-degree view of the plains and hills around.

Note: Since 2018, there has been a restriction put by the forest department on this trek. One cannot go on the trek before taking prior permissions. You will have to reach out to the Chikkaballapur Forest Department to request for permission.

Handy tips for trekkers:

  • Do this as an evening trek and not a morning trek. Mornings will only get hotter. Start the trek by 2.00 pm. Target to reach the top by 4.00 pm. Start descent by 4.30 pm. The sunsets behind the hill that stands behind you (which is the Channagiri hill). But the vibrant colours in the sky are unmissable!
  • There’s quite a lot of garbage at the beginning of the trek. Walk past this and the trail gets better. Take small bags if possible to clear out whatever garbage you can. Let’s leave this trail in a better condition.
  • Take two litres of water per person. There are no water sources.
  • Take some quick snacks and a medical kit. There are no shops or houses at the base. If you need anything, the closest village is Sultanpet, 3 km from the base of the trek.
  • Wear full-sleeved cotton T-shirts. Avoid fleece or material similar to fleece. The entire trail has thorny shrubbery thanks to the dry nature of the trek. These thorns easily cling onto fleece and such materials. Choose smooth cotton clothes.
  • The trek is best done in December, January and February when the weather is cool with clear skies. Summer in this region can get very hot and dry. So avoid April and May, when temperatures can rise as high as 40 degrees celsius. In monsoon, the rocks can get slippery.
  • There is space to park your car at the base.
  • There are no animals on the trail except trail dogs, skinks, and chameleons. There is a possibility of spotting snakes.

Channagiri is a small hill 55 km from Bangalore. It is part of the Nandi Hills range, which consists of the popular Nandigiri and Brahmagiri hills. It is popular with pilgrims for its Omkareshwara temple at the top, with a Hanuman deity in it. It is also known to be the source of River Pinakini, although you rarely see water in any season except peak monsoon.

The start of the trek is marked clearly by a tall anthill that is painted white and worshipped by the locals. The trails run to the left of this structure, climbing up slowly.

It immediately enters wild shrubbery, which in the winter months is dry and full of thorns. Start on this trail. It is well-marked and follows a straightforward route without any turns for 15 minutes. The Channagiri hill rises on your left during this stretch.

The plateau starts opening up behind you. Now and then make sure you turn around to take in the view. Farmlands take up most of the landscape, with occasional urban structures dotting the scenery.

The trail climbs ever so gradually. You hardly feel like you’re climbing for the first 20 minutes of the trek. The trail switches between rocks and steps.

First clearing

Around 25 minutes into the trail, you suddenly enter a flat, open area. This is the first clearing. There are two such clearings on the trek. Here, straight ahead, you see construction work and big rocky hills being torn down. It isn’t a pretty sight, but it’s a landmark nonetheless. Besides the construction area, on the right, Skandagiri rises as a perfect triangular mound. Here, veer left. It’s nearly a right-angled turn to the left. There’s no trail straight ahead. It’s a drop to the bottom.

When you turn left, Channagiri, which was on your left so far, now rises right in front of you.

The trail isn’t too clear here. It could be lost in the tall grass around you. The upward gradient increases slightly from this point.

Your next landmark within a matter of three minutes is a large rock on the left. If you’re quite the imaginative person, you might see a stern face on this rock. With the rock on your left, continue upwards.

The stone steps mark the trail so there’s no possibility of getting lost. Behind you, the view gets better and better.

In around 10 minutes, the trail takes you to a set of large boulders. They are large enough to be climbed on, bringing to mind the massive stone structures of Hampi.

Spend a few minutes on the boulders for a water break. The view of Skandagiri is unblemished from here.

Second clearing

At this point, the trail opens up for around ten minutes, running over big rocks. This is your second clearing. In monsoon, these granite rocks could be slippery.

Within five minutes you reach a flat grassy section. There’s a massive boulder with a flat surface on the right. Straight ahead and above you, spot the deciduous forest stretch that you must next navigate.

The trail might disappear into the bushes here. But if you scout around for five minutes, there’s an unmissable trail on the right, climbing into the forests. So make sure you take the trail on the right.

Enter the final stairway stretch

From here onwards, the rest of the trek is on a full-fledged stairway. The trail alternates between tall grass and small canopies of trees. It climbs on a single, well-laid-out trail for around 30 minutes. You cannot see much ahead of you, but stop and take in the view behind you now and then. The entire landscape opens up. On a clear day, you see at least 30 km into the horizon.

Reach the top

At the end of this staircase, the top of the hill suddenly opens up before you. There’s a temple structure with a Karnataka flag above it. Further ahead you’ll see another small structure with a water tank in front of it. From what we hear, the tank is filled perennially, but the water is not fit for consumption. We wouldn’t recommend touching the water either.

Make sure you walk all around the top of the summit. It’s a vast flat area offering you a 360-degree view of the surrounding hills. You easily spot the entire chain of Nandi Hills.

Start your descent by 4.30 pm. It takes around one hour to return to the base. The trail can get tricky in the dark, so don’t trek after sundown.

Follow the staircase to the bottom. The trail is fairly straightforward. If confused, stick to your right.

If you have time, stop at the second clearing for a while. The colours in the sky and the play of light on the landscape in the golden hour are spectacular! Don’t miss it.

Follow the same trail to the base.

➤ How to Reach the Base of the Trek

Bangalore → New airport road (Bellary Road) → Left turn onto Nelamangala-Chikkaballapura Road

Channagiri is 55 km from Bangalore. The best way to get there is by driving.

Take the Bellary Road from Bangalore and drive past the Bangalore International Airport. Then take a left to Nandi Hills road. Continue straight for 12 km on this road and take the left onto the Nelamangala – Chikkaballapura road. Skip the right turn that goes towards Nandi Hills and continue straight for 4.6 km. Now take a right turn and drive straight for 4.5 km. This stretch is an uphill drive with forest patches on either side.

Look for a sign that says ‘ Sri Omkareshwara Devasthana’ on your left. This is written in Kannada and is very easy to miss. The picture below is of this board. The mud road you find here leads to the base of the hill.

Channagiri Trek 2022: A Delightful Hike Spot near Nandi Hills

Channagiri Trek lying among the Nandi Hills range is a perfect trek spot for beginners from Bangalore. I visited the hills out of a pure coincidence. Our initial plan was to go trekking in Nandi Hills , but we realized it was closed on the weekends. However, the Nandi Hills have a range of other elevations around like the Skandagiri, Channagiri, and Kalavarahalli hills.

The closest one next to Nandi Hills is the Channagiri Hills or ‘Channagiri Betta’ as we pronounce it locally in Kannada. Some call it Channagiri , Chennagiri , or even Chandragiri hills – all of them refer to the same elevated peak. The maps all point to the same hills from different start points.

The last trekking I’ve been on is the Mt. Batur trek in Bali and even after the long gap, it was barely a climb to the top. I’d say the Channagiri Trek is perfect for beginners. Here’s my Channagiri Trek 1-day review and guide based on my trek experience!

Table of Contents

Channagiri Hills Trek Start Point

The hills are open between 6 am to 5 pm every day and it takes around 2-3 hours for the whole trip. I’d recommend visiting it at dawn between 6-7 in the summers as the trek gets too hot and sticky in the daytime. Evenings are considered to be unsafe here.

Channagiri Hills trek start point : The Channagiri hills have two starting trek points via two different roads. From Bangalore, the closest start point is the one right opposite the Nandi Hills trek start point after crossing the Shree Bhoga Nandeeshware Temple.

channagiri hills map from nandi hills

We arrived at the start point around 8 am and it was already sunny. Coming to the start point, the place stood deserted with no signboard around except for a large mansion with tall compounds on our right. But with the Chandragiri hills on the left, standing at 1300 – 1400 meters height above sea level, it was no doubt the hills we were going to hike.

How to get there from Bangalore?

Located 50-60 km from Bangalore, it’s around a 1-hour drive to the Channagiri Betta. From the Kempegowda airport, it’s 34.1 km. Getting there by public transport is possible but for an early morning trek and landing at the trek’s start point, private transport is preferable.

However, here’s how to get to the Channagiri hills from Bangalore :

By car/bike : From Bangalore, it’s a 1-1.5 hour drive (50-60 km) to Chikkaballapur depending on which locality you stay in. It’s a straight neat route via the Bellary road and then the Bangalore-Hyderabad highway.

By train: Get to Chikkaballapur from Yeshwanthpur, Bangalore via Yeshwanthpur train station. From the CBP, get an auto to the hills. The two trains available for the route are Channapatna and KSR Bengaluru Kolar DEMU specials.

By air: As mentioned earlier, the nearest airport supporting international and domestic flights is the Kempegowda airport close to the Bellary road and is only 33 km away from Nandi and Channagiri hills. From the airport, getting to Chikkaballapur via public buses and train is possible but is a time-consuming route.

Trekking Permission and Restriction

Channagiri Trek Permission: Most sites say no permission is required to trek the hills. However, there’s a signboard at the start point that says trespassers shall be fined by the forest department.

Most travel sites, including Karnataka’s tourism organization , have guides about the Channagiri trek and many even mention that no permission is required here. However, recent Google reviews tell about trespassing fines imposed on them. So it’s unclear as to how well the forest rules are implemented here.

When we visited the Channagiri Hills, upon arrival two forest officials approached us and threatened to complain and fine us for trespassing of Rs. 2000. I chuckled at them, “But the websites say it’s open now.” They denied it.

But after stalling a while, one official said if we paid Rs. 1000 for all the 5 of us, he’d let us go. I asked him, “Is the top view worth Rs. 1000?” He laughed and said, Absolutely!

We glanced at each other. Was the trek worth a bribe? After a while of discussing among ourselves discreetly, we took out all the 10s, the 20s, and 50s we had in cash, summing up to Rs. 430 rupees and handed it to him. Counting it, he exclaimed, “430 for 5 people! How can I accept this?”

I told him that it was all the cash we had. We didn’t carry cash because it was unnecessary anyway. After a while of convincing him, he said, “You have 1 hour.”

And off we went!

Through Steeps, Shrubs, and Boulders

The beginning of the trek was easy with a moderate elevation angle through short shrubs and ascendable rocks. It was a pleasant climb with the trees over our heads. The other infamous hills loomed behind us as we climbed up, the Nandi Hill itself.

But the initial climb lasted only 20 minutes. Some of our team were tired, so they settled down to rest for a while. I was still jumping around with excitement. In the near distance, we could see some large rocks heaped on one another away from our trail route. I, along with another guy decided to check it out ourselves. With not much elevation here and short shrubs, we raced up the place to the rocks.

Upon reaching, I couldn’t climb the gigantic rocks here. But he did! Look at this cool picture of him.

We returned to the others still resting within 20 minutes. From here, we only had half the hike or so left. And we decided to ascend again. Here the elevation was higher, rocks became steeper and we had to tread carefully. It’s best to visit only in the summers as the trek can get dangerous if it rains here.

Halfway up we had trees covering our heads. But the rest of the tramp was bare where there was nothing but climbing rocks. The trail here was easy to figure out with the stone laid in an orderly fashion up the hills. While we could go faster, it was too sunny and we decided to climb at our own pace.

With no trees around and the view of the land below starting to peek out, the cool breeze touched our faces. The hike got easier as we ascended but we finally came to a stop under the only tree we found around and felt the coolness beneath as we sat. The heat was unbearable, we settled down under the shade. One of us (the same guy who’d climbed the rocks) proceeded ahead and made it to the top.

But the rest of us settled, I called it a day – the trek was sweet enough for me.

Things to Wear and Pack

With Channagiri hills being a beginner’s trek of no more than 3 hours, there’s not much to pack on your trip. Keep your clothing light and your bag light with only essentials to make your climb easier. Here are some essentials to keep in mind:

  • Light clothing : Summer t-shirts, pants/shorts, and caps should be more than sufficient for the Channagiri trek. Get a light jacket if you’re visiting early or worried about skin tans.
  • Sports shoes : Don’t miss this out! There are a lot of tiny shrubs, thorns, and even snakes around. Equip yourself with sports shoes and socks. Sorry if I sound like a dad.
  • Backpack : No, no huge trek sacks, just one enough to carry your water bottle and some food.
  • Water bottle : Obviously.
  • Snacks and food : You know this best. Pack your food for the top view picnic. But make sure to clean up after you finish.
  • Trashbag : Pick up your waste after you pack up. Let it be an enjoyable experience for others after you as well :)

Yep, that suffices on all the things to bring along on your Channagiri trek. Apart from your backpack, get a stick along if you feel need additional support for the climb. But again, sticks are all over the place anyway. On a serious note, here are some tips for your trek to Chennagiri.

channagiri trekking tips

Tips for Visiting Channagiri Hills

  • See, don’t look! Sure, the hills are scenic to look at as you climb but observe the tiny things around you for a better experience. While there are no exotic wild animals to see, you’ll find many chameleons, snakes, and cute tadpoles in the water cracks between rocks. We even found a clutch of pigeon eggs nestled under a rock! You’ll spot a Peregrin Falcon, Woodpigeon, or the Shaheen falcon if you’re lucky.
  • Visit in a group. Visit in at least groups of 4 or 5. Sites like Thrillophilia and MadTrekkers group host trekking trips on the weekends and I highly recommend taking them up in case you don’t have anyone to come along.
  • Tread with care. While the trek here is easy, don’t get too excited. I did at one point and got minor scratches on my knees after I tripped. One of our friends got a sharp stone pierced through his shoes. Luckily, there was nothing major. To be extra careful, bring a small first aid kit along.
  • Don’t visit in the evenings for safety reasons. Besides the locals of the remote area, the tiny insects and snakes can get dangerous in the evenings.

Places to Visit near Channagiri Hills, Chikkaballapur

Apart from Nandi Hills and Channagiri hills, there are some more things that are worth checking out in Chikkaballapur. Taking in a few closest spots around our trek points, here are other places to visit near Channagiri hills:

Shree Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple: Many people visiting Nandi Hills are bound to visit this temple at the foothills of the infamous peak too. You’ll find it on the way before you get to the hills at the Nandi hills road junction. Its 9th-century build and adorned pillars are impossible to miss.

Nandi Hills and the KSTDC stay: With the infamous betta opposite the trekking spot, it’s bound to make it to this list. I’ve visited Nandi Hills a couple of times and some things I’d recommend checking out here are the Nandi Hilltop garden and the walk up the hills by the Tipu Old fort overlooking the town below instead of driving up.

Also, did you know you can stay at the Nandi hilltop? The KSTDC operates a number of guesthouses (KSTDC Hotel Mayura) with reasonable pricing and facilities. Check out the pricing below on Booking.com and get your best deal!

Other hills to check out nearby: Besides these two hills side-by-side, other hills popular among visitors for treks and sunrise points within a 10-kilometer radius, are the Skandagiri , Bramhagiri , and Kalavarahalli hills .

Channagiri Trek: Tailpiece

That sums up our visit to the Channagiri hills on a weekend. It took us no time to get down the hills, we had begun the hike at 8 am and we returned back to the start point by 11:45, making a wholesome 3-hour trek and almost an hour of just lazying at the top and stopping a lot for those pictures. But it was all worth it.

Initially, we’d planned to trek Nandi hills itself, but we didn’t realize it was closed on the weekends. With no plan of backing out on the whole trip, our closest alternative was these hills – the Channagiri/Chandragiri hills. But in the end, it was a sweet adventure.

We’d come by car so the transport wasn’t a problem. We returned to Bangalore within an hour or so and back to our homes before lunch.

Hope this post was helpful in some way. If not, at least worth the read I hope. Going trekking somewhere yourself? Have a safe trip and tell me how it went!

Karnataka state is one of the most promising states in India, especially for adventure enthusiasts. Karnataka has one of the best peaks for trekking of which few are identified even by Karnataka Tourism highlighting as Eco Trails. It offers from difficult to moderate easy treks within the state and in and around Bangalore City.

At a distance of about 60 km from Bangalore city lies Channagiri, one of the hills amid the famous Nandi Hills range. With the total height of approximately 1350 meters above the sea level, the trek to Channagiri is easy to moderate of about 3 km and takes about two to two and a half hours to complete. Take some more time in hand to enjoy the scenic view atop hills from where you can also see other hills in the range. The other hills in this range are Skandagiri, Brahmagiri, and few others.

The trail, especially after the monsoon, is densely covered with life-size shrubs and thorny bushes. There are rocks in between to reach the highest point. There are few places where one has to be very careful as there are lots of narrow passages but is great fun to cross. The hill is quite steep with some points at an angle of 70 degrees though difficult to climb for amateurs but when with the group one can easily do it.

Sri Kanive Basveswara Swamy Temple, Channgiri Trek

Sri Kanive Basveswara Swamy Temple

Getting there

The access to the trek is easy and can be done with or without any guidance.

It takes about an hour from Bangalore city to reach the base of Nandi Hills. You can either take the Karnataka State buses from Bus Terminal to reach Chikballapur. Ideally, if you are going in a group take your own vehicle and reach the base by 8 am to avoid the sun, as it really becomes hot. The base is where Shree Kanive Basaveshwara Swamy Temple (Nandi) is situated. You can park your vehicle there and visit the temple if you wish to, and then start your trek which starts just from there.

Never miss real stories from India's women.

The Channagiri hills is an adjoined by 2 hills and the view from top seeing 2 more hills by your side is any trekkers delight. It’s an easy trek so enthusiasts of all age groups will love it. You can break in between for snacks or breakfast to be carried by yourself. You need to load yourself with carbs for instant energy, so we took Puliyogare rice, some sandwiches, dates, Chikkis and lots of own water bottles to keep ourselves hydrated. There is no facility for any food or water availability. Make sure you do not litter the area, and carry your own trash bags to take back which implies travel light.

Channagiri Hills

Channagiri trek promises an exciting and rejuvenating adventure through diverse beautiful terrains to enjoy the panoramic view. Though it becomes warm as the sun rises higher, if you plan to leave early morning you can enjoy good weather with lesser temperature along with misty and windy surrounding, making for a fond memory.

There are a couple of options available to trek in Channagiri. For those looking for an easier route, the Southern side of the hill is would suit you best, and for seasoned trekkers who are looking for a challenging trek can opt for the Western side. If you are lucky, you can spot the Peregrine Falcon, the Nilgiri Woodpigeon and the Shaheen Falcon which are believed to be nesting on the route. Even if you wish to spend some time atop the hill and enjoy the panoramic view the trek can be completed in half a day with loads of memories and stories to share.

Photo of roottraveller

Channagiri Hills is located near Nandi Grama (popularly known as Nandi Hills) of Chikkaballapur district, approximately 60 km away from bangalore. Its beautiful place away from city crowds to get fresh air and spend some time with mother nature.

Most people use their own vehicle to reach here, i.e. early morning bike trip but you can use public transport from Kempegowda bus terminal (Majestic) terminal 3 to Chikkaballapur bus stop (35 km) and from there to Nandi Grama (26 km). Btw there is Nandi railway station and you can try that one too.

Trip route :

Kempegowda Bus Station

I joined an ongoing trip of Bangalore ASCENDers. It was an early morning of Sunday and we had to catch our bus from Majestic terminal 3. we had breakfast near Chickabalapura bus stop and from there we boarded another bus to reach Nandi village. from here Channagiri hills is nearly 3 km away and we walked. It was a sunny day. I looked at my watch - 10 o'clock. hmm, it gonna be a hot day. ufff!!

Nandi Hills

In the way, there are Nandeeeshwara Prabhu Temple, Graveyards, Potter’s house, Flowers and Sugarcane fields. If you have time, must give a visit, people are quite welcoming and happy to chat.

We passed through all of these to reach the foothills from where our trek would start. The southern side of the hillock is an easy terrain and we choose the western side one which is usually not used by people. One has to go through shrubs and anthills.

It was a bit cloudy when we started and became sunny before we reached the peak. Advice use cap to avoid sunburn. the path is through rocky terrain and the greenery make it beautiful. Its 4 km one-way trek and nearly took 2 to 3 hours. at the summit, there is Anjaneya Swamy temple.

We have snacks and lunch at the top watching the mesmerizing view.

About Place : Chennagiri is a part of a hill range near the Nandi Hills area, about 60 km from Bengaluru. The hill range consists of a group of 3 hills is a great weekend trek for anyone who would like a very good introduction to trekking. We begin the trek by walking to the bottom of Chennagiri's ridge on the right side. From here on we will be sticking to this ridge until we near the summit.
