With stops at three stunning ports of call, guests will have the opportunity to explore the beauty and culture of the Caribbean with stops in Aruba, Curacao, and the Grand Turks. Embark on the ultimate cruise experience with Carnival Mardi Gras! This 8-day southern Caribbean itinerary will transport you to paradise. From the moment you board the Carnival Mardi Gras, you’ll be surrounded by luxurious amenities, an incredible selection of entertainment, and the breathtaking beauty of the Southern Caribbean. Get ready to explore the islands of the Caribbean and make memories that will last a lifetime!

Carnival Mardi Gras Itinerary 2023

Our 8-day southern Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Mardi Gras began with our first port of call – Aruba. This beautiful island is known for its pristine beaches and clear blue waters, and it did not disappoint. We spent the day soaking up the sun and relaxing on Eagle Beach, one of the most picturesque beaches in the Caribbean.

After some relaxation time, we decided to explore the island and discover its rich culture and history. We visited the Arikok National Park, where we saw ancient Arawak cave paintings and rock formations, as well as native wildlife like the Aruban whiptail lizard and the Aruban burrowing owl.

For those who love shopping, Aruba has plenty of options, from high-end boutiques to local markets selling handcrafted souvenirs. We also had a chance to sample some delicious Aruban cuisine, such as Keshi Yena, a dish made of melted cheese and seasoned chicken.

Carnival Mardi Gras Itinerary

The next stop on our Carnival Mardi Gras cruise was the beautiful island of Curacao. Located in the southern Caribbean, Curacao is known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant Dutch colonial architecture.

We decided to explore the island by taking a tour, which was arranged by the cruise ship. Our first stop was at the historic Rif Fort, which was built in the 1800s to protect the island from pirate attacks. Today, the fort is home to a shopping center, restaurants, and bars, making it a popular spot for tourists to visit.

From there, we visited the colorful and lively Willemstad, the capital of Curacao. We strolled down the streets lined with vibrant Dutch-style buildings and admired the unique architecture of the Handelskade, a row of colorful buildings overlooking the harbor.

We also visited the famous floating market, where local vendors sell fresh seafood, fruits, and vegetables from their boats. The market is a great place to pick up some authentic Caribbean souvenirs.

After the tour, we headed to Mambo Beach, which is one of the most popular beaches on the island. The beach was busy with tourists and locals alike, all enjoying the warm sun, crystal-clear water, and soft sand. We spent a few hours soaking up the sun and enjoying some refreshing cocktails before heading back to the cruise ship.

Grand Turks

Our final destination on the Carnival Mardi Gras cruise was the stunning island of Grand Turk, located in the Turks and Caicos archipelago. This island is known for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs, making it a popular spot for snorkeling and diving.

One of the highlights of our time in Grand Turk was visiting the world-famous Margaritaville. This beachfront restaurant and bar, created by Jimmy Buffet himself, had an exciting and lively atmosphere, with music, drinks, and water activities to enjoy. We loved lounging in the giant pool, sipping on tropical cocktails, and trying out the water slides.

When Is Formal Night On An 8-Day Carnival Cruise?

carnival 8 day cruise 2023

Cruise ships have a long tradition of holding formal nights, where passengers dress up in evening gowns, suits, and tuxedos. On a typical 8-day Carnival cruise there are two designated formal nights. If you want to plan ahead and know exactly when to break out your cocktail dresses and bow ties, here are the details on formal night timing for 8-day Carnival cruises.

If you’re short on time, here’s the quick answer: Formal nights on 8-day Carnival cruises are typically the 3rd and 6th days of the cruise .

Formal Nights are Usually on the 3rd and 6th Days

When planning a cruise vacation, it’s natural to wonder about the dress code and when formal nights will be held. On an 8-day Carnival Cruise, formal nights are typically scheduled for the 3rd and 6th days of the trip.

These evenings provide an opportunity for guests to dress up, enjoy a fancy dinner, and indulge in the glamorous atmosphere of the ship.

On formal nights, guests are encouraged to wear elegant attire such as suits, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, or evening gowns. It’s a chance to showcase your style and feel like royalty for a night. The ship’s restaurants and entertainment venues are usually buzzing with excitement as everyone dons their finest outfits.

During formal nights, the ship’s photographers are also on hand to capture the moment. You can take stunning portraits with your loved ones or strike a pose on the grand staircase, just like the movie stars. These photographs make for cherished mementos of your cruise experience.

What if you don’t want to dress up?

While formal nights are a popular event on cruises, they are not mandatory. If you prefer a more casual evening, there are usually alternative dining options available on the ship. You can still enjoy a delicious meal without feeling obligated to dress up.

Additionally, many cruise lines offer a range of onboard activities and entertainment choices, so you can find something that suits your preferences.

It’s important to note that the dress code for the rest of the cruise is generally more relaxed. Most evenings are designated as “cruise casual,” where you can wear comfortable and casual attire. This allows you to fully enjoy the relaxed vacation atmosphere without the need for formalwear.

Tips for Formal Nights on a Carnival Cruise

If you decide to participate in the formal nights on your Carnival Cruise, here are a few tips to make the experience even more enjoyable:

  • Plan your outfits in advance: Take the time to select your formal attire before the cruise. This will ensure that you have everything you need and reduce any last-minute stress.
  • Accessorize: Add some sparkle to your outfit with jewelry, a stylish tie, or a statement handbag. Accessories can elevate your look and add a personal touch.
  • Book a table at a specialty restaurant: If you want to enhance the formal dining experience, consider making a reservation at one of the ship’s specialty restaurants. These venues often offer a more intimate setting and gourmet cuisine.
  • Relax and have fun: Remember, formal nights are meant to be enjoyable and memorable. Take the opportunity to socialize, dance, and create lasting memories with your fellow cruisers.

By knowing when formal nights are typically scheduled on an 8-day Carnival Cruise and understanding your options, you can make the most of your cruise experience. Whether you choose to dress up or embrace a more casual evening, the choice is yours. Bon voyage!

The First Formal Night Coincides with the Captain’s Dinner

One of the most anticipated events on an 8-day Carnival Cruise is the formal night. This is an opportunity for guests to dress up in their finest attire and enjoy an elegant evening on board the ship. On an 8-day Carnival Cruise, the first formal night usually coincides with the Captain’s Dinner, which is a special event where passengers have the chance to dine with the captain of the ship.

The Captain’s Dinner is a highlight of the cruise and is typically held on the first or second night of the voyage. It is a formal affair, with the captain and other officers of the ship in attendance.

Guests are encouraged to dress up in their formal attire, such as tuxedos and evening gowns, to fully enjoy the occasion. The dining room is beautifully decorated, and the atmosphere is filled with excitement and anticipation.

What to Expect on the First Formal Night

On the first formal night, guests can expect a variety of activities and events to take place throughout the evening. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Captain’s Welcome Reception: Before the Captain’s Dinner, there is usually a reception where guests can meet and mingle with the captain and other officers. This is a great opportunity to take photos and chat with the crew.
  • Formal Dining Experience: The Captain’s Dinner is a multi-course meal served in the main dining room. The menu is typically more extravagant than usual, with options ranging from seafood to prime rib. Guests can expect top-notch service and a memorable dining experience.
  • After dinner, there is often live entertainment in the ship’s theater or lounge. This can include Broadway-style shows, comedy acts, or live music performances. It’s a great way to end the evening on a high note.

It’s important to note that while formal attire is encouraged on the first formal night, it is not mandatory. Some guests may choose to dress more casually, while others embrace the opportunity to go all out with their formal wear. The main objective is to have fun and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

If you’re unsure about what to wear on the first formal night, Carnival Cruise Line provides guidelines on their website. They recommend cocktail dresses, pantsuits, or dressy skirts for women, and suits or tuxedos for men.

It’s always a good idea to pack a range of outfits to suit different occasions and personal preferences.

So, if you’re planning an 8-day Carnival Cruise, be sure to mark your calendar for the first formal night, as it coincides with the Captain’s Dinner. It’s an evening of elegance, fine dining, and unforgettable memories.

Don’t forget to pack your formal attire and get ready to make some amazing experiences on board!

Themes and Dress Code Expectations for Formal Night

One of the highlights of an 8-day Carnival Cruise is the much-anticipated Formal Night. It’s an evening dedicated to elegance and sophistication, where guests get to dress up and enjoy a glamorous atmosphere.

To ensure you’re prepared for this special occasion, it’s essential to understand the themes and dress code expectations for Formal Night.

Themes for Formal Night

Carnival Cruise Line doesn’t have specific themes for Formal Night, but they encourage guests to embrace the spirit of elegance and glamour. This means dressing up in your finest attire and enjoying a night of sophistication.

While there may not be a specific theme, the overall ambiance of the evening creates a memorable experience for all.

Dress Code Expectations

On Formal Night, Carnival Cruise Line expects guests to adhere to a dress code that reflects the spirit of elegance. For gentlemen, this typically means wearing a tuxedo, a suit, or dress pants with a dress shirt and a tie.

Ladies have more flexibility in their choice of attire and can opt for a cocktail dress, an evening gown, or even a dressy pantsuit.

It’s important to note that while the dress code for Formal Night is more formal than other evenings on the cruise, it doesn’t mean you have to break the bank on expensive outfits. There are affordable options available that still allow you to look fabulous and fit the dress code.

Where to Find Inspiration

If you’re unsure about what to wear for Formal Night or need some inspiration, there are plenty of resources available. Carnival Cruise Line’s website offers a helpful guide on what to wear for Formal Night, complete with pictures and suggestions.

Additionally, you can check out fashion magazines, online fashion blogs, and even social media platforms like Pinterest for outfit ideas.

Remember, the key is to feel confident and comfortable in your chosen attire. Whether you decide to go all out with a glamorous gown or opt for a stylish suit, the most important thing is to enjoy the evening and create lasting memories.

Other Cruise Events to Plan For

While formal night is certainly a highlight of any cruise, there are many other exciting events and activities to plan for during your 8-day Carnival cruise. Here are some of the top events that you won’t want to miss:

Theme Nights

Be sure to check the cruise itinerary for the schedule of shows and plan your evenings accordingly.

Deck Parties

No cruise is complete without a deck party. Carnival cruises are famous for their lively and energetic deck parties, complete with music, dancing, and plenty of fun. Head up to the pool deck and join in the festivities as the ship sets sail under the stars.

Poolside Activities

During the day, there are plenty of poolside activities to keep you entertained. From pool volleyball tournaments to dance classes, there is always something happening around the pool area. Grab a drink from the bar, soak up the sun, and enjoy the lively atmosphere.

Casino Nights

If you’re feeling lucky, be sure to check out the onboard casino. Carnival cruises offer a range of casino games, including slot machines, blackjack, poker, and roulette. Whether you’re a seasoned gambler or just looking for some casual fun, the casino is a great place to spend an evening.

Fitness and Wellness Activities

For those looking to stay active and maintain their fitness routine while on vacation, Carnival cruises offer a range of fitness and wellness activities. From yoga and Pilates classes to state-of-the-art fitness centers, you can stay in shape while enjoying your cruise.

Remember to check the daily cruise itinerary for a complete list of events and activities happening on your specific cruise. With so much to do and see, you’ll never be bored on an 8-day Carnival cruise!

With two evenings set aside for dressing up in tuxes and evening gowns, 8-day Carnival cruises give guests plenty of opportunities for glamorous formal fun. Just be sure to pack accordingly so you can strut your stuff in style on formal night.

Enjoy the food, dancing, and photoshoots that make formal nights such a cherished cruise tradition.

11 Top Carnival Cruise Deals You Don’t Want to Miss

If there is anything better than a cruise, it’s getting a great deal on that trip. And if you’re looking for a deal, then Carnival is one of your best options.

Funnel on Carnival Celebration.

The cruise line is well-known for offering a lot of value, specifically with cruise fares that are generally lower than the competition. If you know what to look for, then you can hunt down trips that offer some ridiculously low pricing.

That’s why we searched Carnival’s schedule out more than a year from now to scout some of the most attractive deals in a variety of categories. From the least expensive cruises overall to great deals on cruise itineraries you don’t see every day, this list should give you a good idea of what sort of offers are out there.

How to Find Your Own Cruise Deal on Carnival

While we have a number of ideas below, if you want to find your own Carnival cruise deal then you can search Cruise Critic for deals here . To help narrow things down, we do have some suggestions on how to find the best offers.

Sail Older Ships The biggest and newest ships get lots of buzz and publicity, but they also generally carry a higher price tag. That’s why if cost is a major factor for you, then look for cruises on older ships. Generally you can find similar cruises, but for less than taking a trip on the newest ship.

Sail When Kids Are in School Below, you may notice that many of the best deals sail in the fall. That’s not a coincidence. If you search, you’ll find that there’s a correlation between cruise prices and the school year. Sail during the summer, Christmas holidays, or Spring Break, and fares will be higher than sailing times like the fall or winter.

Price Doesn’t Mean Value One final thing to consider is that just because a price is low doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best value. In fact, we cover a number of cruises below that DON’T have the lowest prices. Yet, they are unique due to some characteristic of the trip that make them a compelling cruise.

Cheapest Overall Carnival Cruise for 2023

Carnival Conquest in Miami

  • Date: October 9, 2023
  • Ship: Carnival Conquest
  • Ports: Miami, Nassau
  • Price: $194

If inexpensive is what you’re going for, as we go to press it doesn’t get any cheaper than this. The cruise aboard Carnival Conquest from Miami is only three days, helping keep the price low. An interior cabin on the October 9, 2023 sailing starts at just $194 per person.

The trip itself is as basic as it gets, going from Miami to Nassau and back. Still, if you want to take a cruise and not spend a lot of money, this is one of your best options. It’s also one of your best options if you’re wanting to let loose as the short trip and low cost should lead to a festive atmosphere. Learn more about this cruise here .

Cheapest Overall Carnival Cruise for 2024

  • Date: September 30, 2024
  • Ports: Miami, Half Moon Cay, Nassau
  • Price: $179

When it comes to the least expensive cruise of 2024, you have several itineraries to choose from at $179 per person for an interior room, but they are all aboard the Carnival Conquest sailing from Miami. We chose this trip because it is four days with two port stops, including the Half Moon Cay private destination.

This particular cruise departs in late September, heading to The Bahamas. Other trips at this price point include a three-day cruise to Nassau, and a four-day cruise with stops at Princess Cays and Nassau. Learn more about this cruise here.

Most Interesting Itinerary

  • Date: August 22, 2024
  • Ship: Carnival Panorama
  • Ports: Los Angeles, Ketchikan, Sitka, Icy Strait Point, Kushiro, Aomori, Yokohama
  • Price: $2,069

If you want a cruise that’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, this trip fits the bill. In fact, it’s essentially two cruises in one. First, you’ll sail from LA to Alaska with three ports of call and sailing the Endicott Arm. We’re big fans of sailing Alaska and consider it a must-see.

But that’s only the first part of the cruise. From there, you’ll head to the Far East, crossing the international date line before three more ports of call in Japan. This includes Kushiro in the northern part of the country and Aomori, followed by Yokohama, just outside of Tokyo.

And in an unusual move for these sort of lengthy trips, the cruise is aboard Carnival Panorama — one of the newer ships in the fleet. Learn more about this cruise here .

Most Expensive Carnival Cruise of 2024

  • Date: April 1, 2024
  • Ship: Carnival Luminosa
  • Ports: Brisbane, Guam, Okinawa, Yokohama, Seward, Juneau, Ketchikan, Seattle
  • Price: $3,449

It makes sense that Carnival’s most expensive trip is also its longest, but on a per day basis it’s actually a decent deal considering the experience. This month-long cruise repositions from Australia to Seattle. It will feature lots of time at sea as you cross the Pacific but also feature stops in amazing places.

From Brisbane you’ll visit Guam, five different ports of call in Japan, crossing the date line, then a cruise through Alaska including stops in Seward, Juneau, and Ketchikan, before finishing up in Seattle.

The price tag is high — nearly $3,500 per person for an interior cabin. But on a per-day basis, that comes out to just a shade over $100. Learn more about this cruise here .

Best Deal on a New Ship

carnival 8 day cruise 2023

  • Date: September 7, 2024
  • Ship: Carnival Jubilee
  • Ports: Galveston, Mahogany Bay, Costa Maya, Cozumel
  • Price: $599

If you want to sail the nicest, newest ships then you normally have to pony up some cash. As a rule of thumb, newer ships have higher price tags to sail. After all, there’s normally strong demand for a new ship.

But with Carnival, there are still opportunities to sail with a great deal. In this case, Carnival Jubilee (which debuts in late 2023) will sail from Galveston on September 7, 2024 on a 7-day cruise. You can get aboard this cruise for just $599 per person for an interior cabin.

The round trip cruise has stops in Mahogany Bay (Carnival’s private port in Roatan), Costa Maya , and Cozumel before returning home. There’s a lot to do on this ship, so being able to sail for a week will give you time to get it all done. Learn more about this cruise here.

Best Deal for an Alaskan Cruise

  • Date: May 7, 2024
  • Ship: Carnival Spirit
  • Ports: Seattle, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, Victoria
  • Price: $699

When it comes to cruises, trips to Alaska should be a bucket-list item. Given the remoteness and size of this part of the country, a cruise offers the best way to see the most in a relatively short period of time. However, these cruises are usually more expensive than similar length Caribbean trips.

We found this deal, however, that represents the least expensive Alaska cruise of 2024. Starting at $699 per person for an interior cabin, the cruise takes you from Seattle to Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Victoria (Canada) before returning home. That’s a line-up of classic ports in this part of the country that shouldn’t be missed. Learn more about this cruise here.

Cheapest 7-Day Cruise of 2023

  • Date: September 23, 2023
  • Ports: Los Angeles, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, Cabo San Lucas
  • Price: $439

If you’re wanting a deal on a vacation this year, then check out this 7-day cruise from Los Angeles (technically Carnival sails from Long Beach). The cruise aboard Carnival Panorama is for seven nights and takes you to all the hotspots on the Pacific side of Mexico.

You’ll visit Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas, and don’t forget days at sea to work on your tan. From LA it’s a classic itinerary that shouldn’t be missed. And while the price isn’t as cheap as the lowest fares of 2024, it’s still a strong deal. Learn more about this cruise here.

Cheapest 7-Day Cruise of 2024

carnival 8 day cruise 2023

  • Date: September 8, 2024
  • Ship: Carnival Magic
  • Ports: Miami, San Juan, Amber Cove, Grand Turk
  • Price: $369

If you want inexpensive but also want to cruise more than three or four nights, this is the least expensive 7-night cruise we found for all of 2024. The cruise aboard Carnival Magic departs Miami, headed to the eastern Caribbean.

From there you’ll have stops in San Juan, Amber Cove (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic), and Grand Turk , along with some time at sea just to relax and enjoy the sunshine.

At $369 for an interior cabin, that comes out to just about $50 per person, per day to sail on what is a great itinerary. Learn more about this cruise here.

Great Deal From Galveston

  • Date: September 15, 2024
  • Ship: Carnival Dream
  • Ports: Galveston, Costa Maya, Belize, Cozumel
  • Price: $399

September is a great time for cruise deals as kids are back in school, meaning lower demand from families to sail. Meanwhile, the weather is still warm so you can enjoy getting some sun and water even before you reach the Caribbean.

In this case you can do just that on a 6-night cruise from Galveston. The trip aboard Carnival Dream stops in Costa Maya, Belize, and Cozumel. And the deal runs just $399 per person for an interior cabin, or about $65 per day. Learn more about this cruise here.

Great Deal From Port Canaveral

Carnival Vista docked in Roatan

  • Date: October 13, 2024
  • Ship: Carnival Vista
  • Ports: Port Canaveral, Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, Amber Cove

A great deal on a fall cruise is this trip that departs Port Canaveral in mid-October. Depart from the Orlando area and you’ll have stops at Half Moon Cay (Carnival’s private destination), Grand Turk, and Amber Cove.

And this trip won’t set you back much. An interior cabin starts at just $369 for nearly a week on the ship. Plus, it’s aboard Carnival Vista. This ship isn’t the newest, but was built just a few years ago as the start of the Vista class, Carnival’s second largest style of ship. That means it has all the latest features you’d expect on a Carnival ship. Learn more about this cruise here.

Great Deal From Jacksonville

  • Date: November 2, 2024
  • Ship: Carnival Elation
  • Ports: Jacksonville, Nassau, Princess Cays
  • Price: $209

Finding a cruise that’s under about $75 a night is a decent deal. Under $50 is (nearly) unheard of. This trip comes in at just around $40 per day .

For that price there are some trade-offs. First, it sails from Jacksonville which isn’t as busy a port as Miami or Port Canaveral. As well, it’s on Carnival Elation, which is one of the oldest ships in the fleet.

Even so, the price tag is too tempting to pass up. The cruise will take you south to Nassau and Princess Cays for literally the price of visiting a nice steakhouse for two. Learn more about this cruise here.

Carnival Freedom's next two cruises from Port Canaveral canceled after exhaust funnel fire

A fire in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom this weekend has disrupted a cruise of the Port Canaveral-based ship for the second time in less than two years — and will mean that the ship's next two cruises are canceled.

Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday.

Thousands of passengers with scheduled cruises will be affected by the canceled cruises during a busy spring break period for Carnival and other cruise lines.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Carnival initially had said it expected no changes in its upcoming cruises, but on Sunday afternoon said the cancellations would be required.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas.

In the statement, Carnival said: "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

In a Facebook post, Carnival's widely followed brand ambassador, John Heald, conceded that many people who booked one of the canceled cruises are "feeling very disappointed," and he apologized for the turn of events.

But, Heald added that he wanted to assure affected passengers that, "when you rebook, using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the fun you deserve."

More than 500 people responded to the post, with many saying they thought Carnival was generous with the compensation offer. But some people who said they were on the cruise that experienced the fire said they thought Carnival should have done more for the people who were on the ship.

Carnival said the fire was confined to the funnel area. The cruise line said there are no reports of injuries to passengers. Two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Carnival said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to the Carnival private island of Princess Cay due to adverse weather.

Details of previous fire: Fire breaks out on Carnival Freedom while Port Canaveral-based ship was in Grand Turk

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed."

By 5:20 p.m. Saturday, the fire was extinguished.

Carnival said the ship's captain made multiple announcements to passengers and crew, and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks.

The port-side portion of the funnel had fallen onto Deck 10, and the firefighting response put out any flames.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the fire, and Carnival activated its incident response team to support the ship’s crew.

Carnival said there were no other operational issues with the ship’s systems, and the ship, which was on a four-night cruise, was visiting Freeport on Sunday.

The Freedom sailed into the channel at Port Canaveral around 7:30 a.m. Monday, and docked at Cruise Terminal 6, letting off the passengers who were on the cruise. Carnival then awaited a Coast Guard inspection of the ship before it could be cleared to leave Port Canaveral for the Freeport shipyard for repairs. The ship left the port about 6:20 p.m.

A cruise ship funnel generally serves as a smokestack to lift emissions above the deck, thus away from passengers and crew.

On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement.

The sailing had about 3,700 passengers onboard. And the two upcoming sailings that were canceled each likely would have had a similar passenger count, because this is a busy time for the cruise industry.

The Carnival Freedom's next voyage was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday afternoon on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. That cruise had port-of-call stops scheduled at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But that sailing and a Friday sailing both have been canceled. Friday's five-night sailing also was scheduled to stop at those two ports of call, but in reverse order.

In May 2022, a fire broke out in the funnel area of the Carnival Freedom while it was docked in Grand Turk. Carnival then canceled three scheduled sailings of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral because of the need to repair the ship's fire damage at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

More recently, in October 2023, the Carnival Freedom debuted a new iconic winged funnel after returning from a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain.

Carnival passenger documents 24-hour nightmare as storm pounded cruise ship off Southeast coast

Daniel Taylor, of Albemarle, North Carolina, was one of the passengers aboard the ship and reported water damage and communication outages, as well as high waves that battered the vessel. He spoke to FOX Weather after documenting his experience in a timeline of events.

A Carnival cruise was anything but a carnival for thousands of sea-sick passengers caught up in a coastal storm over the Memorial Day weekend. Daniel Taylor was one of the passengers aboard Carnival Sunshine. He joins FOX Weather to talk about his experience.

Coastal storm leaves Carnival passengers in distress as large waves pound cruise ship

A Carnival cruise was anything but a carnival for thousands of sea-sick passengers caught up in a coastal storm over the Memorial Day weekend. Daniel Taylor was one of the passengers aboard Carnival Sunshine. He joins FOX Weather to talk about his experience.

CHARLESTON, S.C. – A coastal storm generated a lot of drama on the high seas over the weekend for passengers aboard a Carnival cruise ship.

The storm churned up large waves that rocked Carnival Sunshine and its passengers, making for a rough return to port and delaying its return from the Bahamas over the Memorial Day weekend.

National Weather Service meteorologists were expecting waves upwards of 15 feet Friday, but some computer models indicated wave heights could reach 20 feet in the storm system.

Friday's cruise chaos

Taylor said the weather was great prior to the large waves that were churned up by a powerful storm off the Southeast coast.

"We had a few rain patches here and there, but not enough to affect a vacation," Taylor said. "It was nice and warm out each day."

By 4 p.m. Friday, the weather started looking bad in the distance. Taylor said he remembers that was about when they started to hit rough seas.

"It was only 45 minutes later that Captain Contarino came over the intercom system to let everyone know that due to adverse weather conditions, we may arrive later in port than scheduled," Taylor said. "He also advised that the staff would do everything they could to minimize any discomfort."

After the captain made his 4:45 p.m. announcement, Taylor said "vomit bags" were put out at all the elevators. What unfolded over the next 24 hours was described by Taylor as a nightmare on the open sea.

Taylor said the ship started hitting much larger swells. He said:

"I was in the Liquid Lounge watching a show, and the sound of the waves hitting the ship could be heard over the music. The stage lights were shaking, disco ball swinging back and forth, and the LED wall on the stage was moving side to side. I left the show to go look outside. I went out on Deck 6 forward to take some videos and photos at the front of the ship. The storm we were running into looked worse and worse by the minute as the skies gradually got darker."

Staff started closing off public decks. Taylor said:

This video was taken at 8:28 p.m. Friday from Deck 6 forward heading into the storm.

"The open lido deck was being cleared for safety, and I was asked to leave the front deck."

Taylor said he visited the buffet area to grab a sandwich from the deli. He said:

"We hit a very large swell which resulted in plates stacked up falling over and cups toppling over at the drink station."

By 10:02 p.m. Friday, Taylor said the ship was bobbing up and down from the large swells creating g-forces and the feeling of weightlessness.

Taylor said he was back in his room. He said:

When the ship hit 70kts (80 mph) winds, Taylor said the captain slowed the ship and turned heading north-northeast heading directly into the storm.

"The cruise info screen showed we had slowed down to almost 5kts (5.8 mph), while winds were hitting us at 70kts (80 mph). It was at this point I noticed the captain had turned the ship from going northwest into Charleston to now going north/northeast directly toward where the eye of this storm system was. It was also around this time that water was hitting my porthole window on Deck 2."

The stateroom across from Taylor, front of ship, began leaking water through the upper Pullman bed. The two guests packed their belongings and left their room, Taylor said.

Taylor said: "I heard the girls in the cabin across from me in the hallway, so I opened my door to find that their room was taking on water. The upper Pullman bed had water pouring in, wetting the bed they would be sleeping on, dripping all over the nightstand beside the bed and soaking the carpet."

A video monitor in Taylor's room shows an important announcement screen.

Taylor said: "They took our cruise information screen off the TV and replaced with an ‘address announcement standby’ screen, which remained until 7:30 a.m. when the announcement was made. Around this time was also when our internet stopped working. This left us blind to knowing anything about where we were, where we were going, how fast we were traveling, and wind speeds for over five hours."

Taylor said there was no communication from the captain or cruise director from the 4:45 p.m. announcement on Friday until the 7:30 a.m. Saturday announcement was made by the cruise director.

He said: "This announcement was telling us that we were outside Charleston harbor and our pilot has been delayed due to weather conditions."

Taylor took a photo at 6:40 a.m. Saturday from the back of the ship from the Havana area.

Taylor said: "The captain came on the intercom to tell us that at that time, we were unable to safely proceed into port - that fleet operations was monitoring the situation and would keep us updated."

Taylor said: "Update from cruise director, announced activities they were coming up with to try to keep guests entertained while we were waiting out at sea."

Video taken at 6 a.m. Saturday by Taylor shows the ship continuing to hit large swells but not as bad as it was through the night, he told FOX Weather.

Taylor said: "An announcement was made about there being a problem with the satellites, which affected Wi-Fi. This entire time, we weren’t able to use our Hub App for chatting to other shipmates or use the internet/other apps to communicate with anyone."

Taylor said: "Announcement from the captain that we were heading to the pilot station in hopes of being able to sail into Charleston."

He said the ship arrived at the port about 5:30 p.m. and started disembarking 30 minutes later.

Taylor said: "A little after 7 p.m., I was finally able to get off the ship and into my car by 8 p.m. to drive home four hours to Albemarle, North Carolina."

He said this was his third time aboard Sunshine out of Charleston and his fourth with the cruise line.

What Carnival officials say

Matt Lupoli, senior manager of public relations for Carnival Cruise Line, released the following statement Tuesday:

"The ship’s crew followed our protocols for rough weather and thankfully, no one was seriously injured. Our medical staff helped a small number of guests and crew members who needed minor assistance.

"The ship’s captain made several announcements about the weather and the delay it caused in returning to Charleston, asking guests to use extra precaution while walking around the ship. Some of the worst weather occurred in the overnight hours when announcements are not typically made, but guests and crew were safe. The ship’s officers worked through the night to minimize discomfort as much as possible from the added movement caused by the rough ocean. And we have heard from many guests who were very complimentary of the crew and how they managed the situation.

"The weather was unexpectedly strong, causing conditions that were rougher than forecasted. Given the circumstances as they were, the ship’s officers and our Fleet Operations Center team using real time meteorology data coordinated to keep the ship in its safest location. Attempting to sail out of the large front could have been dangerous. The ship proceeded to the port as soon as the weather began to clear."
