Bruges Canal Tour: the best way to explore Bruges, Belgium
Bruges, Belgium is also known as the Venice of the North, referring to the numerous canals and bridges. A visit to Bruges isn’t complete without a boat tour on its canals. A Bruges canal tour allows you to appreciate the most noteworthy delights of the city from a completely different angle. In this post I will share some photos and tips for the famous Bruges canal tour with you. Enjoy!
Bruges Canal Tour
If you have visited Amsterdam and walked along the canals, you might be surprised when seeing the canals in Bruges. Here, the canals are relatively inaccessible. There are just a few places where you can actually walk along the canals. To really explore the canals, secret gardens, picturesque bridges and beautiful architecture, you should explore Bruges by boat! It is quite fun driving through all the small canals of the city and you get to see many things in a short time. The views of monuments and centuries-old buildings are fantastic!
Boat landing stages
The canal tours leave from a couple of departure points in the city, but due to legislation only 20 boats are on the canal at once. There are five landing stages along the canals. The routes and prices are all the same. It’s only the start and end point that will vary.
- Michielssens, Huidenvettersplein 13
- Coudenys, Rozenhoedkaai
- De Meulemeester, Wollestraat 32
- Gruuthuse, Nieuwstraat 11
- Stael, Katelijnestraat 4
- Boat landing stage 1
- Boat landing stage 2
- Boat landing stage 3
- Boat landing stage 4
- Boat landing stage 5
Seating and photographing
The boats have a row of single seats that run down the middle, which would be the worst place to make photos. Make sure to get a seat at the very front or very back to make unobstructed photos. It may be worth waiting until the next boat to come along if only middle seats are available. The boats are not covered, but umbrellas are provided for rainy weather. Because you are seated during the entire ride, you can use this time to relax and recover from any walking you might have done around Brugge.
Audio guides or the old fashioned way
Some boat tours provide recorded audio guides and others are doing it the old fashioned way; commentary from the boat driver. I personally prefer the second one. Our boat driver spoke in English and pointed out sights along the way (French, German and Dutch were also possible). He gave us a well worth overview of the local history and was really lovely and funny.
Costs of a canal tour in Bruges
A boat tour in Bruges is relatively inexpensive. You pay about € 12,00 per person for a 30 minutes trip at the dock. Children up to 11 years old pay around € 10,00, Bruges residents around € 9,00 and children up to 3 years can go along for free. Make sure to reserve your spot online , as tickets get sold out quickly.
Tip: you may want to bring some cash along to tip your driver.
Organized canal tour in Bruges
There are several organized tours available that include a Bruges canal tour. You can for example combine a canal tour with a guided walking tour, scavenger hunt or a canal tour in Ghent . I think this is a very fun way to see the most of Bruges in a short time.
Bruges canal tour duration
The boats typically run every 15 or 20 minutes. Sometimes it takes a bit longer, because the boats wait till they’re full or nearly full before departing. A boat tour takes about 30 minutes and you will see beautiful places that you can only see by boat. The boats usually operate daily between March and mid-November from 10.00am till 18.00pm (last boat leaves at 5:30pm). Early morning is a good time to avoid the queues. The boat can be a bit cold, but you get a unique view. Plan your boat trip and Bruges itinerary accordingly!
In Bruges, a canal tour is a must for a different perspective on the city and to see hidden gems that are only accessible by boat. Witness secret gardens, charming bridges and historical architecture from the comfort of a boat. Choose a front or back seat for unobstructed photos and enjoy insightful commentary from the boat driver. The cost is reasonable and reservations are recommended. Be mindful of operating hours to avoid crowds and for a more comprehensive experience, opt for an organized tour.
Do you have any questions? Feel free to leave a comment in the comment section below and I’ll try my best to answer them. Safe travels and enjoy exploring Bruges by boat!

Hi, I see that there are a lot of free walking tours in Bruges. Have you had any experience with walking tours (free or paid)? If so, do you have any recommendations? Will be in Bruges late June.
Girlswanderlust
Hi Stuart, unfortunately I don’t have any experience with a free/paid walking tour in Bruges. I believe some tours start at the ‘Grote Markt’. When searching online, you can find different walking tour options like historical, medieval or night tours. Sounds fun! Enjoy Bruges and don’t skip the Bruges Canal Tour 😁
4 of us will be in Bruges on November 24th. Can we still get a canal tour? Ken Kb*******@ho*****.com
Hi Ken, boat trips run from early March to mid-November. So at November 24th, the shipping companies can decide for themselves whether to open or not. On this page ( https://www.visitbruges.be/en/bruggemetdeboot ) you can find some contact details of shipping companies. Best is to reach out directly to them. Enjoy Bruges! I’m sure you will like it!

Bruges Canal Tours: Everything You Need To Know
We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
During our recent family trip to Europe, Abby and I took a day trip from Brussels to Bruges , a beautiful town in Belgium. We both wanted to go on one of the legendary Bruges canal tours. I’m so glad we did! This fairytale European city needs to be on your bucket list!
Where is Bruges?
Bruges is a serene small Flemish town just northwest of Brussels . Visiting Bruges is a perfect day trip from Brussels and is easily accessible by train.
Bruges is known as an idyllic small European city steeped in historical charm. It’s home to gorgeous canals and many fascinating landmarks. Furthermore, The city also has many great restaurants, pubs, and street-side vendors.
Visiting Bruges, Belgium
If you are visiting Brussels for a few days, taking an extra day to go to Bruges is well worth the time. Its gorgeous canals winding along against ancient stone buildings have led Bruges to be called the “Venice of the North.”
In this blog post, I want to provide information about taking a Bruges canal tour, highlight the city’s history, and discuss some landmarks you’ll likely see on these Bruges canal tours.
Getting to Bruges from Brussels
From Bruges, you just need to hop on the Belgium intercity train. You can board directly from one of the main Brussels train stations, including Bruxelles-Nord (Brussels North), Bruxelles-Central (Brussels Central), and Bruxelles-Midi (Brussels South).
The Brussels to Bruges train runs all day, and the ride is just over an hour.
The Belgium train website has a dedicated page for the Brussels to Bruges train route , which is a great resource. You can buy tickets from that page as well.
The route trip Brussels to Bruges train tickets are a standard € 32.00 for adults. However, there are a lot of discounted ticket options listed as well, and most are € 17.50 or less.
The Bruges Canal Tours
Once you arrive in Bruges, you want to have a game plan for your canal tour. It’s helpful to know a little bit about the layout of the city.
Bruges rests within a mesh of several canals that penetrate and encircle the city. These canals ultimately allow boat access to the North Sea, located about 20 kilometers north of the city. The town’s access to the North Sea made Bruges a vital shipping hub for centuries.
The canals lining the town are relatively inaccessible as they are flanked everywhere by houses and other structures. Because of this, there are only a few places, other than bridges, where you can see the canals.
Therefore, the best way to see these picturesque canals is on a boat tour!
Planning Bruges Canal Tours
There are five landing stages along the canals. These are the only places you can embark on a canal tour. The routes and prices are generally the same across the different tour operators. There are several canal tour operators, each with their own open-air boats. They pretty much all follow the same route, so in my opinion, the best Bruges canal tour is the one with the shortest line.
Bruges Canal Tour Boarding Locations
Boarding takes place at the following locations. Each tour operator will leave from a different location, so be sure to check their website.
- Michielssens, Huidenvettersplein 13
- Coudenys, Rozenhoedkaai
- De Meulemeester, Wollestraat 32
- Gruuthuse, Nieuwstraat 11
- Stael, Katelijnestraat 4
Scroll around the above map of Bruges to get a lay of the land!
The Bruges Canal Tour boat trip takes around 30 minutes. The boats typically operate between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm, with 5:30 often being the last tour. Tours generally operate most of the year, except in January and early February.
However, the availability of tours will vary by operator. It may change based on events like municipal construction projects, canal restoration initiatives, and severe weather.
Bruges Canal Tours Tickets
Unlike the canal tours in Amsterdam and the Seine River cruises in Paris , you cannot book Bruges canal tour tickets in advance. You buy your tickets directly from the tour companies at the landing stages. As of writing this, the Bruges canal tour price for adult tickets is € 12.00, and children’s tickets are € 7.00.
You may need to wait in line at the landing stages to purchase tickets. The canal tours are very popular and will get busy. Bruges has an active cruise ship industry (Norwegian, Holland America, Windstar, Celebrity), and the town will fill up with cruise passengers on day excursions.
The extra traffic means lines for the canal tours will get longer after about 11 am. Before 11 am is the best time to ensure you have shorter lines. It also gives you the rest of the day to explore Bruges.
TIP: Get in line for your canal tour as early as possible in Bruges.
Private canal tours are also available. There are several different companies offering tours with different types of boats. Contact the companies directly to find out more.
There are a couple of great s mall-group Bruges canal tours available through Get Your Guide . They also include a Bruges walking tour. These are a great option if you want to be able to buy Bruges canal tour tickets in advance.
Other Things to Consider
During the canal tour, the boat guide will comment on the significant landmarks and history of the area. During our day trip to Bruges , our canal tour guide did a great job narrating the tour and pointing out interesting areas, landmarks, and historical sights. Most guides can speak multiple languages and will do their best to tailor the language to the passengers’ needs.
The boats are cash-only. Be sure to bring a few Euros to tip your tour guide.
If you want to take pictures, try to be at the front, back, or side of the boat. Most of the boats have a line of seats down the middle, but people may block your pictures if you sit there.
The boats are open-air and uncovered, so be sure to wear your sunscreen! Also, the tours can get pretty chilly, depending on the time of year, so bring a jacket. We love the Amazon Essentials packable jackets for our travels.
It’s always helpful to know the history and significance of a city prior to visiting. So, I want to take some time here to talk more in-depth about Bruges and, of course, the canals. Then, I will share some of the incredible landmarks that you will see from your Bruges canal tour.
The History Of Bruges And Its Canals
Bruges has witnessed a remarkable evolution over the centuries. Its history encapsulates the ebb and flow of urban development, from its Viking origins to a flourishing medieval center, economic decline, and eventual modern-day revival.
The city’s tremendous ability to adapt to changing circumstances and preserve its cultural heritage is a testament to the strength and perseverance of the Danish people across time.
Origins of Bruges , Belgium
The origin of Bruges can be traced to the 9th century when Vikings established a fortress on the banks of the Reie River. The name “Bruges” is believed to be derived from the Old Dutch word “Burg,” meaning fortress. The city gradually developed into a bustling medieval trade center due to its strategic location and access to the North Sea.
The Golden Era of Bruges
Bruges experienced its golden era during the late medieval period, particularly in the 14th and 15th centuries. The city became a major commercial and cultural hub, attracting merchants, artists, and scholars across Europe.
Its thriving wool and textile industry and a sophisticated network of canals contributed to its prosperity. Bruges was home to the influential Bourse, one of the earliest stock exchanges in the world.
Bruges Economic Decline
Despite its flourishing period, Bruges faced economic challenges in the 16th century. The silting of the Zwin, a vital waterway for trade, led to a decline in maritime activity, impacting Bruges’ economy.
Additionally, geopolitical shifts and the rise of other European trading centers contributed to a gradual decline in the city’s prominence.
Modern Times and Revival of Bruges
For several centuries, Bruges endured a period of relative obscurity. However, in the 19th century, efforts were made to preserve its medieval architecture, and the city gained recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000.
The 20th century saw a revival in Bruges’ fortunes, with tourism becoming a key driver of its economy. The city’s well-preserved medieval structures, including the Belfry of Bruges and the Basilica of the Holy Blood, attract millions of visitors annually.
What Do You See on the Bruges Canal Tours?
During the Bruges canal tours, your tour guide will highlight many fascinating landmarks. Each place gives you a window into the long history of this amazing city.
Like many European cities, it’s steeped in lore that spans epochs, and seemingly every bridge or building has a colorful and long legacy.
Here is a list of many sites you will probably see on the Bruges canal tours.
Founded in 1245, the Princely Beguinage Ten Wijngaarde boasts serene white-colored house fronts and a tranquil convent garden.
This UNESCO World Heritage site was once the residence of beguines—emancipated laywomen leading pious and celibate lives. Today, the beguinage is home to the Order of St. Benedict nuns.
Saint John’s Hospital
With an eight-hundred-year history, Saint John’s Hospital has cared for pilgrims, travelers, the poor, and the sick. Explore the medieval wards where nuns and monks practiced mercy, the chapel, and a remarkable collection of archives, artworks, medical instruments, and six paintings by Hans Memling.
Church of Our Lady
The Church of Our Lady showcases Bruges’ artisans’ craftsmanship through its 115.5 meters high brick tower. The church has valuable art, including Michelangelo’s renowned Madonna and Child, numerous paintings, 13th-century painted crypts, and the tombs of Mary of Burgundy and Charles the Bold. Abby and I visited after our canal tour, and it was incredible!
Groeninge Museum
Offering a diverse overview of Belgian plastic arts history, the Groeninge Museum features Flemish Primitives, 18th and 19th-century neoclassical pieces, Flemish Expressionism masterpieces, and post-war modern art.
Ambachtshuis Huidevetters
Built by hide tanners, this craft house near Rozenhoedkaai has two wings. The north wing, demolished in 1629, was replaced in 1630 under the guidance of Bruges architect Jan De Smet. The building was restored in 1912. It has been used as a fishmonger and stockfish farm since the mid-19th century.
Belfry & Carillon
Bruges’ tallest tower, the Belfry, standing 83 meters tall, houses a melodic carillon with 47 bells. Climbing its 366 steps rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view of Bruges and its surroundings.
Fish Market
Originally located at Markt Square, the fish market was moved here in the 18th century due to complaints about the stench. Since the Middle Ages, buyers and sellers have come together at the Bruges fish market. Fresh saltwater fish, once a luxury, is still sold every morning from Wednesday to Saturday.
These small whitewashed almshouses, dating back to the 14th century, are scattered around Bruges. Wealthy townspeople or guilds established almshouses to house poor older adults or widows. Over 46 blocks have been preserved, with 43 still occupied.
Burghers’ Lodge
Situated on Jan Van Eyckplein, the Poortersloge (Burgher’s Lodge) served as a meeting spot for the Society of the White Bear in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. Later, it became the city’s Academy of Arts (1720-1890) and the State Archives (1912-2012).
Visiting Bruges: The “Venice of the North”
Visiting Bruges to take one of the Bruges canal tours is a fantastic way to add something special to your trip to Belgium. Its quaint stone houses, romantic canals, cobbled streets, cookies, waffles, and chocolate make it a bucket-list destination to take friends and family of any age.
The iconic canals are a dream for photographers. Travel to and around the city is simple and inexpensive. And as you can tell by this post, Bruges canal tours should be on your list. I recommend this trip to everyone!

Things To Do Review
The Bruges Canal Boat Tour is wonderful way to view the magnificent city of Bruges. There are 5 companies doing this in Bruges: Venetië van het Noorden on Huidenvettersplein, Coudenys on Rozenhoedkaai, De Meulemeester in Wollestraat, Gruuthuse in Gruuthusestraat, Stael in Kathelijnestraat. The first boat departs at 10am the last at 17.30pm at the debarkation point you choose. Check out the location for pick up, but when we went there, they had a new one every half an hour. Pricing was very reasonable, around €7.

Bruges old town tour & canal cruise
Explore the long history of Bruges on a historic walking tour of the old town, and then embark on a peaceful cruise down the city’s canals. On the walking tour, your guide will bring you to see Markt, the city’s market square in the heart of the old town. Here, you can opt to climb the 366 steps to the top of the Bruges Belfry in the square for expansive views over the city.
You’ll also see Burg Square, the historic area where Bruges was founded. You’ll encounter the tallest tower in the city when you visit the Church of Our Lady, which is home to Michelangelo’s sculpture, Madonna and Child . The tour also brings you to the Lake of Love, a serene park near the Begijnhof, which Benedictine nuns still call home.
The second part of your tour is a cruise down Bruges' canals, where you can enjoy the city from another point of view.
The first four hours of this tour is a privately guided walk of Bruges’ old town, while the last hour is a cruise on the city’s canals. Private cruises aren’t available, so you’ll be on a shared guided cruise with about 15-20 other people. The walking tour is available year-round, but the canal cruise is weather-dependent, so March through October are the best months for this.
The exact order of the walking tour can vary depending on the timing of the cruise, but you can expect to see many of Bruges’ highlights. You’ll visit Markt, in the heart of Bruges’ old town. The square is wide-open, mostly traffic-free and surrounded by former guildhalls and multi-hued step-gabled houses with mismatched rooflines. The square is dominated by the 13th-century belfry, rising 83 m (272 ft) into the sky. For expansive views of the city you can climb the 366 steps to the top.
You’ll also see Burg Square, a cobblestone square where the city was founded. The square is framed by the manor of Franc of Bruges and the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The basilica has an intricate dark-gray Romanesque façade adorned with gilded figurines. Inside, it consists of two separate chapels, the Saint Basil Chapel and the Holy Blood Chapel, which is home to a relic containing what is believed to be the blood of Jesus Christ.
The Church of Our Lady is the tallest building in the city, with its tower reaching 116 m (379 ft) into the sky. You can admire the cross-vaulted nave, the black-and-white-tiled flooring and the heavily ornamented Baroque-style interior. The church is also home to Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child , a white-marble sculpture of the Virgin Mary with an infant Jesus.
The tour will also take you to the Lake of Love in Minnewater Park, a reservoir joined with the canal system. The peaceful lake is an excellent place to see some wildlife, especially swans which are the symbol of the city. Nearby, you can visit the adjoining Begijnhof, a group of white step-gabled houses now occupied by an order of Benedictine nuns.
The hour-long cruise will provide a different perspective of these sights, as you glide along the postcard-worthy canals ornamented with willow trees, elegant stone bridges and medieval buildings.

Our Magical Must-Do Bruges Day Trip from Brussels by Train
H ave you ever been somewhere that felt so magical that you had to pinch yourself? That’s what visiting Bruges was like for me! Today, I want to share the unforgettable Bruges day trip from Brussels that Abby and I took while in Belgium. These two days in Belgium were part of a multi-country two-and-a-half-week trip to Europe that also included stops in Paris , Amsterdam, London, and Bath.
So, make sure to check out all of my other Europe posts, too!
Bruges, Belgium
Bruges, a charming city in Belgium , captured our hearts with its enchanting canals, cobblestone streets, awe-inspiring architecture, and, of course, mouthwatering Belgian waffles. Matt and Jake needed a mid-trip day to catch up on sleep, so Abby and I did this one on our own!
Join us as we spend a sunny summer day in Bruges . We’ll delve into the history of Bruges, wander the streets, and experience the delights of this enchanting European destination.
If you are not familiar with Bruges, its historic city center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. The preservation of its medieval architecture and urban layout has contributed to its recognition as a place of exceptional cultural value.
Bruges Day Trip from Brussels: Departing from Brussels Nord
Our adventure began at the Brussels Nord train station, where we hopped on the convenient and efficient Belgium intercity train. We chose this train station because it was just minutes from the Hotel Indigo Brussels City , where we were staying. But we could have also caught the train from Brussels to Bruges at Brussels Central and other stations.
The nice about these intercity trains is that you can roll up literally right before it takes off. Abby and I had tickets in hand (valid for any time) and thought there was no way we would make the 9:05 a.m. train as we were running out of the hotel at 8:56 a.m. We made it with a minute to spare!
I want to stop here for a minute and include how to buy tickets to go from Brussels to Bruges.
Belgium Intercity Train Tickets Between Brussels and Bruges
The train system that connects the communities within the county is the Belgium Intercity Train . Their website is surprisingly easy to navigate compared to other European train companies. Trains run all day long between the various cities in Belgium. Your ticket is single-use (or multi-use if you opt for those), and you don’t have to commit to a particular time.
Belgium Train Ticket Prices
I started writing ticket prices here, but there are SO MANY different prices. There are often 2-for-1 specials, half-priced weekends, discounts based on events, and more. Visit their website and check prices on the particular day you plan to visit.
The most you will pay as an adult is 32 Euros roundtrip, but it’s often much less. Youth (ages 12-26) and Seniors (age 65+) roundtrip tickets are at most 15 Euros . And kids under 12 ride for FREE when accompanied by a paying adult. These maximum prices are single-trip prices. Further discounts apply when buying passes or multi-trip tickets.
Ticket prices are fixed, as opposed to some of the larger European train companies, which use dynamic pricing similar to airlines. This means that other than taking advantage of special promos, the prices stay the same whether you book in advance or same day, and also whether in person at the station or online. So, do what works for you! We bought our tickets online 15 minutes before the train was leaving our hotel room at the Hotel Indigo Brussels City .
As I mentioned above, the Belgium Train website has a lot of fantastic information and answers to your FAQs. So, visit their website to learn more, purchase tickets, and manage your journey.
While we are actually traveling, my go-to is Apple Maps. I use the map on my iPhone and switch directions to Transit. It gives very accurate directions and real-time arrivals, departures, and delays. I highly recommend you do the same. There is no reason to download other mapping apps onto your phone these days!
Our Bruges Day Trip from Brussels
It takes just over an hour to go from Brussels to Bruges on a train with limited stops. The journey to Bruges allowed us to enjoy the scenic Belgian countryside, and we eagerly anticipated what awaited us upon arrival. Abby always shares in my excitement during moments like this. She knows how much I love to see something new, and she does too!
Upon reaching Bruges, you will need to take a short 10-minute walk into the center of the city. Or, you can hop on a bus or hail a taxi or rideshare. We opted to walk, and as we emerged from the tunnel on the other side of the train station, this was before us. Pure magic! We knew we were in for a treat!
Wandering the Cobblestone Streets: Stepping Back in Time in Bruges
After a short walk, we found ourselves in the heart of Bruges , ready to explore its cobblestone streets and unravel its history. The city’s well-preserved medieval architecture took us back in time. As we strolled along the winding roads, we admired the ornate facades, gabled houses, and towering belfries. Each corner revealed a new architectural gem, telling stories of Bruges’ prosperous past as a bustling trading center.
Abby was particularly interested in visiting Bruges as it’s where Jan van Eyck once lived. She had been learning about his work, The Arnolfini Portrait in particular. We even saw this famous painting in person at the National Gallery in London just a week later. It’s moments like this that make me emotional. Giving her the opportunity to immerse herself in what she learns in school is incredible. I don’t take it for granted; I know she doesn’t either.
A Must-Do Canal Tour on Your Bruges Day Trip
Our first stop was a canal tour, which was a fantastic way to immerse ourselves in the city’s charm. Bruges boasts an intricate network of canals, earning it the nickname “Venice of the North.” Gliding through the waterways, we marveled at medieval buildings, picturesque bridges, and idyllic scenery. And while we were in a boat full of other people, it was still a peaceful and enchanting experience that allowed us to view the city from a whole new perspective.
A canal tour is a must on any visit to Bruges! The good news is that you do not need to book them in advance. Various providers are located around the city, where you basically buy tickets and stand in line. The wait times vary quite a bit based on location and time of day. We saw people almost walking on with no line at one place and an hour-long wait at another. You can also book a canal tour in advance through a site like GetYourGuide .
I recommend knocking this out first because it shows you a good part of the city. The way Bruges is laid out, with interwoven canals, makes it a little tricky to explore on foot. Seeing everything from the water will help you determine which areas to prioritize afterward. You can’t go wrong with any vendor; however, if you can swing a private canal tour in Bruges , do it!
Throughout the captivating canal tour, I took a lot of photos. It was hard to help myself. I will scatter them throughout this post, but here are a handful of my favorites! And make sure to keep reading because there is a lot of great information ahead of us in this post.
What Makes Bruges Special?
Stepping off the boat, we found ourselves again in the heart of the city, ready to explore its cobblestone streets and unravel its history. Bruges’ well-preserved medieval architecture took us on a journey back in time. We admired the ornate facades, gabled houses, and towering belfries as we strolled along the winding streets. Each corner revealed a new architectural gem, telling stories of Bruges’ prosperous past as a bustling trading center.
In addition to the exquisite architecture, Bruges is renowned for its lace-making heritage. The delicate craftsmanship of Bruges lace has been passed down through generations, and you can still find lace shops and workshops in the city. Admire the intricate designs and consider picking up a unique lace souvenir.
We were craving something sweet, so we stopped at a local chocolate shop! We each picked out a few pieces. They were incredible! Bruges has a long-standing tradition of chocolate making. The city has numerous chocolate shops, where artisans create delectable treats using traditional methods. We couldn’t miss indulging in authentic Belgian chocolates during our visit. If you have time, there are local Bruges chocolate-making workshops that look very fun!
What Did We Have For Lunch During Our Bruges Day Trip? Belgium Waffles, of Course!
No visit to Bruges is complete without savoring the heavenly delight of Belgian waffles. We couldn’t resist the temptation and indulged ourselves in these delicious treats. Whether topped with powdered sugar, decadent chocolate sauce, or a medley of fresh fruits and cream, every bite was pure bliss.
It’s no wonder that Belgian waffles have gained worldwide fame, and Bruges offers a plethora of delightful cafes and bakeries to satisfy our sweet tooth. Consider booking a Belgium Waffle-making class if you have a full day to spend in Bruges!
Learning About the History of Bruges
It’s impossible to be somewhere with such a rich history and not try to soak up as much as possible!
Bruges is steeped in history, and its significance can be traced back to the Middle Ages. During this period, the city flourished as an economic powerhouse thanks to its strategic location and access to trade routes.
Its prosperity can still be seen in the awe-inspiring Gothic buildings, such as the Belfry of Bruges and the Church of Our Lady.
The Belfry of Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an iconic symbol of the city. Climbing its 366 steps rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of Bruges and its surrounding landscape. However, this does take a lot of time and effort, so take that into consideration.
The Church of Our Lady, on the other hand, is home to the remarkable sculpture “Madonna and Child” by Michelangelo. It is the only Michelangelo sculpture to leave Italy during his lifetime, making it a must-see for art enthusiasts. I was almost speechless when we walked into this stunning building still used for services today. It is free to walk inside. However, there is a charge to see Michelangelo.
Furthermore, Bruges was a major center for art during the 15th and 16th centuries, often referred to as the Flemish Primitives period. As I mentioned above, many influential painters like Jan van Eyck, Hans Memling, and Gerard David lived and worked in Bruges, leaving behind a rich artistic legacy.
If you would like to immerse yourself more in the remarkable history of this European city, consider a Bruges self-guided history tour!
Shopping on Your Bruges Day Trip
While Bruges offers a beautiful blend of history, art, gastronomy, and natural beauty, attracting visitors worldwide, it also lures those looking for retail therapy.
I was surprised when we turned a corner, and the shops quickly changed from small chocolatiers and lace makers to H&M and Tommy Hilfiger. This bustling shopping area caught me a bit off guard. There are so many more authentic and unique things to do in Bruges!
We were already pretty wiped out and could shop anywhere, so we pivoted and routed ourselves back to the train station. We only had to wait about 15 minutes and hopped on the next train back to Brussels.
Returning To Brussels From Our Bruges Day Trip
The train ticket we bought included a return trip. And, just like on the way there, we didn’t need to pre-select our train ticket time. However, you should pay attention to the time the next few trains leave to minimize wait time. Again, this is where Apple Maps shine! You can enter your destination, in my case, the Hotel Indigo Brussels City and the transit directions will take you right there.
TRAVEL TIP: Always screenshot your tickets when traveling by train. Doing this allows you to quickly and easily scan them where needed without relying on internet service.
By 4:30 pm, we were back in the big city to meet up with Matt and Jake for dinner. After that, Matt and I had a date night at the secret rooftop bar in Brussels , and over a cold Belgium beer, I told him about our trip. I felt bad, though, because a place like Bruges is right up his alley, and he would have loved it. But, when traveling for long periods at a quick pace, it’s always important to listen to your body and rest when you need to! That is one of my top travel tips!
Our day trip to Bruges from Brussels was an incredible adventure filled with history, rich architecture, and countless magical moments. The city’s canals, cobblestone streets, and architectural splendors provided a backdrop fit for a movie. It’s somewhere I hope to visit again one day, especially for the Bruges Christmas Market!
A Bruges Day Trip to Remember
From the enchanting canal cruise to the captivating history woven into the fabric of the town, Bruges offered a truly magical experience. It’s a place with something for everyone, suitable for couples and families alike.
And let’s not forget the heavenly Belgian waffles and local chocolate that left us craving more!
Booking Bruges Tours And Activities
There are so many different tours, workshops, and activities that you can book for your day trip to Bruges. GetYourGuide alone has 99 current options that include everything from a guided Rickshaw Tour to private historical walking tours .
We use GetYourGuide on almost every trip we take, both internationally and domestically! This popular site is easy to navigate and a great way to keep outings organized or book them on the fly. Click here to view all Get Your Guide Outings in Bruges!
Is Bruges Good For a Day Trip?
I certainly say so! In fact, we didn’t love Brussels as much as the other European cities that we visited. Our day trip to Bruges was the highlight of my time in Belgium!
There was a minute when we wondered if we should have just spent our two nights in Bruges , but I am glad we didn’t. That would have required us to switch to/from our Thalys trains to the Belgium Intercity train on our two main travel days, both from Paris and Amsterdam. This would have made our travel days longer and left more room for error. So, I am glad that we chose to stay in Brussels and take a day trip to Bruges!
If you’re looking for a day trip from Brussels, Bruges should definitely be on your travel bucket list. And if you have more time, consider making an extra stop in Ghent along the way!
