Campus Visits: Southern California College Visits

Are you California dreaming on a rainy spring day? Southern California (SoCal) attracts college applicants from all over the world thanks not only to its great weather, beach access, and celebrity sightings, but also to its world-class research institutions and top-ranked liberal arts colleges. The Los Angeles region, in particular, is a great destination for spring break or summer college visits since you can bundle together a number of schools in just a few action-packed days. Are you hoping to spend the next four years on the West Coast? Then this post is for you!

As with all campus visits , it’s key that you plan ahead as tours and info sessions book up fast—especially in the summer months! If you want to connect with a current student or professor while you’re on campus (something we strongly suggest you do!) you need to reach out well in advance to make these connections and coordinate the logistics.

CAMPUS VISITS: SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SAMPLE ITINERARY

Day 1: la rivals campus visits.

Drive 12 miles from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to kick off your time in SoCal with a tour of UCLA —the largest university in the UC system, and the most selective (along with UC Berkeley ). At UCLA , campus tours last 90 minutes and are led by current students to highlight academic programs, resources and student life. The campus is known for its green spaces, world-renowned arts program, and vibrant student life. Because UCLA follows the quarter system, students are able to explore a variety of courses during the condensed 10-week terms. Given its size (over 30,000 undergraduates) freshmen often find themselves in large lecture classes. But by joining one of the many on-campus organizations, Greek life, or a club team, you can easily create smaller pockets of community on campus.

After your campus visit to UCLA, head 20 minutes south to its athletic rival, USC , where you can attend a student-led or self-guided campus tour seven days a week. USC offers another opportunity to attend school in downtown LA—though its 226-acre campus and recognizable brick buildings provide a distinctive community within the city. The undergrad enrollment hovers around 20,000, but the average class size is closer to 26 students, so there are still many opportunities to get to know your professors. USC also offers Academic Department Presentations , a great opportunity to learn more about specific undergraduate schools and courses of study. Ask your tour guide about the Sidney Harman Academy for Polymathic Study —part of USC’s “Renaissance Ideal.” The Academy is a place to explore interdisciplinary learning and critical thinking, core tenets of USC’s academic mission. While you wait for the tour to begin, read more about the Freshman Profile and Admission Information here .

After your first day of college tours, caffeinate with a latte from famous coffee roaster, Blue Bottle Coffee, not far from the USC campus. Then head to the Santa Monica Pier to enjoy the sunset, visit the small amusement park, and grab dinner at one of the many restaurants nearby. Don’t forget to write down your reflections and notes after each campus visit!

Day 2: The Liberal Arts in LA Campus Visits

We always recommend touring a variety of colleges to determine which school’s culture, size, curriculum, and location feels like the best fit. On your second day in LA, visit Occidental College to see if you can picture yourself at a small liberal arts college. While you’re walking around this picturesque campus and vibrant Quad, you might not even remember you’re in the heart of LA (in fact, it’s frequently featured in movies about college life). Oxy takes pride in being a racially and economically diverse college community, with nearly half the student body composed of domestic students of color or international students. On-campus institutes like the Urban & Environmental Policy Institute reflect Oxy’s emphasis on social change and community-based learning. Registration is open for campus visits and on-campus information sessions, so book your session in advance. Before you go: check out some of Oxy’s Virtual Events to get a feel for the campus culture and gain a unique perspective of the college experience from current students.

After your info session, explore one of LA’s greatest cultural sites with a trip to The Getty Center, designed by architect Richard Meier. Soak in the panoramic views of LA and tour the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum—best known for its European paintings, extensive photography collection and rotating temporary exhibitions.

Day 3: The 5Cs Campus Visits

Finish up your whirlwind SoCal college tour by driving 30 minutes east of LA to Claremont, a quintessential college town with restaurants, shops, green space, and students on every corner! The Claremont Colleges, composed of seven independent institutions (5 undergraduate and 2 graduate programs), operate as a single consortium. Students are able to enjoy the benefits of a small college but draw on the resources of all campuses throughout their four years.

Each institution has its own governance and campus culture—and selectivity! See acceptance rates, below, and consider booking tours at two or more of the colleges to compare and contrast.

  • Pomona College (Acceptance Rate: 8.62%): One of the leading liberal arts colleges in the country with an undergraduate enrollment of 1,764. Half of Pomona students do research with faculty during their time on campus.
  • Scripps College (Acceptance Rate: 35.14%): A small women’s college with an emphasis on leadership and student participation. Scripps is a top producer of Fulbright students every year.
  • Claremont McKenna College (Acceptance Rate: 13.34%): A private liberal arts college with an emphasis on government, economics, and international relations.
  • Harvey Mudd College (Acceptance Rate: 17.96%): A selective engineering, science, and mathematics college.
  • Pitzer College (Acceptance Rate: 16.57%): A prestigious liberal arts college known for its programs in social sciences and environmental studies.

To close out your SoCal campus visits, put on your hiking boots and head to Hollywood! The Mt. Hollywood Trail (a three-mile loop starting from the Griffith Observatory’s parking lot) is a popular destination on the weekends and culminates with a view of the iconic Hollywood Sign. Take a deep breath and soak up the sun—this could be your home for the next four years!

Depending on your time, interests and school range, we suggest amending the itinerary above by adding (or replacing) campus visits to  Loyola Marymount University , California Institute of Technology , Chapman University , UC Irvine , and Pepperdine University

Days 4-5 Bonus Campus Visits

If you have extra time, head two hours up the coast to Santa Barbara. Here you can see UC Santa Barbara , located just steps from the Pacific Ocean, or Westmount College , a small Christian liberal arts college in Montecito.

In our Campus Visit Clusters series, we are highlighting different regions of the U.S. each week with our suggested itineraries. We’ve covered Boston and now SoCal. Next up: NorCal!

Campus protests: LAPD officers gather to clear USC campus; university warns of possible arrests

What to know about campus protests:.

  • LAPD officers began to gather before dawn today at the University of Southern California , where a pro-Palestinian protest encampment was set up 12 days ago, as school officials warned people to leave or risk arrest.
  • In April, USC cancelled the speech of Asna Tabassum , the valedictorian and a Muslim student, citing security concerns and sparking controversy.
  • More than 2,300 people have been arrested at pro-Palestinian protests at colleges across the country. Columbia University is rethinking its commencement ceremony in the wake of campus protests and mass arrests.
  • Police operations have cleared encampments in multiple colleges , including NYU and The New School in New York. At least 30 were arrested at Portland State University, where protesters barricaded themselves inside a library.
  • Many universities are bracing for disruption at upcoming commencement ceremonies, including at the University of Michigan, Northeastern , Arizona State and Ohio State where protests have occurred.
  • Pro-Palestinian demonstrations that have rocked college campuses in the United States are now gaining traction across the world, from London, Paris and Rome to Sydney, Tokyo, Beirut and beyond.

It's daybreak in Los Angeles and the Alumni Park in the campus, where most of the encampment had been set up, has been largely cleared after warnings of arrest for those who remained, according to a KNBC camera crew on the campus.

No arrests or violent clashes have been reported so far.

A KNBC chopper over the campus also saw the officers dismantling tents in the park.

University Park Campus has been closed

The University Park Campus has been closed "as a result of significant activity at the center of campus," the university's public safety department said in a post on X.

The department also asked those remaining to leave, saying "People who don’t leave will be arrested."

A KNBC chopper is over the USC campus and LAPD officers were seen pushing a group of demonstrators out of the main campus area and shutting the gates.

No major clashes have been reported so far.

Encampments appear largely empty and protestors seem to have moved away.

Police in riot gear begin clearing banners

Police officers from the LAPD are wearing riot gear, according to a KNBC camera crew in the area.

Officers were also seen taking down protest banners in the Instagram live of the university's student-run Annenberg Media.

Dozens of officers from the Los Angeles Police Department have gathered around the campus, according to a KNBC camera crew at the site, with the university saying the department is "clearing the center of UPC," referring to the university park campus.

"If you are in the center of campus, please leave. People who don’t leave could be arrested," the university said in a post on X.

Three fire trucks and two ambulances have also been parked in the area, Corienne Smith, a student journalist at the campus posted on X.

After weeks of pro-Palestinian protests on campuses, colleges regroup ahead of commencement ceremonies

Mirna Alsharif

After weeks of pro-Palestinian protests on campuses nationwide leading to more than 2,300 arrests, many universities are now regrouping in preparation for their upcoming commencement ceremonies, with some taking place as early as this weekend.

The University of Michigan,  Northeastern ,  Arizona State  and  Ohio State  are among the schools where protests have occurred and are slated to have graduation ceremonies this weekend.

School administrations are issuing warnings that anyone planning on disrupting the ceremonies will be removed from campus, as students at dozens of institutions continue to protest in support of Palestinian human rights.

Who were the ‘outsiders’ at Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall?

campus tour university of southern california

Rich Schapiro

campus tour university of southern california

Natasha Bracken

When James Carlson was arrested inside Columbia University’s  Hamilton Hall , he was already under investigation for snatching an Israeli flag out of a man’s hand near campus and setting it on fire.

The 40-year-old animal rights lawyer is among the group of “professional outsiders” cast by the New York City police department and mayor as having a significant role in the takeover of Hamilton Hall.

But while there is no doubt that the occupation of the building amounted to a dramatic escalation in tactics, it remains unclear how large an influence outsiders like Carlson have had on the overall student protest movement at Columbia and nearby colleges, which began more than two weeks ago.

Some of the student protesters think the narrative pushed by city and university officials — of dangerous outsiders co-opting the demonstrations — is fueled by ulterior motives.

USC protest encampment cleared as other colleges prepare for graduation

Schools continue to grapple with balancing students’ free speech rights and maintaining an amicable atmosphere ahead of graduation ceremonies.

campus tour university of southern california

Graduation ceremonies are underway this weekend at universities across the country, including some that have been roiled by pro-Palestinian protests and police clashes. At the University of Southern California, Los Angeles police pushed some protesters off campus early Sunday and locked a gate afterward, according to student newspaper the Daily Trojan . Police also assisted university public safety officers in clearing a protest encampment, USC said later in the day.

Early Sunday, at least 50 Los Angeles police officers moved through the USC campus and surrounded Alumni Park, where they issued a dispersal order to a pro-Palestinian encampment, the Daily Trojan reported . The university’s senior vice president of communications, Joel Curran, said later in the day that it was 75 to 100 Los Angeles Police Department and university officers, with the university ones issuing the dispersal order. Some protesters left the area, while a university alert warned students that anyone not leaving “could be arrested.”

At a nearby campus gate, some police pushed a group of protesters off campus and locked the gate, the Daily Trojan reported. The university said its officers were also involved. Officers also disassembled tents and largely cleared the encampment. The LAPD said it was there “to support” university officers, and that no arrests were made.

About 6:30 a.m. Pacific time, the university said in a message on X that its University Park campus, one of its two main campuses, had been cleared. “The campus remains closed,” it said.

USC President Carol L. Folt said in a statement that the university in recent weeks “exercised patience and restraint as we worked to de-escalate a volatile situation,” but that it was time to “draw a line” after the protest “was spiraling in a dangerous direction over the last several days.”

“Residence halls, campus throughfares, and libraries had become places of confrontation,” she wrote. “Some finals were disrupted with noise and chanting during mandated quiet periods. Yesterday afternoon, outside agitators jumped the perimeter fencing and assaulted our officers.”

Here’s what to know

Graduation ceremonies are being held Sunday at campuses including Ohio State University and Northeastern University in Boston. USC’s commencement week is scheduled to begin Wednesday, though the school has canceled its main speakers. Schools continue to grapple with balancing students’ free speech rights and maintaining an amicable atmosphere as thousands of graduating students and their families celebrate this weekend.

On Saturday, roughly 75 student protesters marched through the University of Michigan’s commencement ceremony held at Michigan Stadium. The group began protesting at the start of the program and walked up the main aisle as they chanted, the university said in a statement. Public safety personnel moved them toward the back of the stadium, where they remained free to protest throughout the program. No arrests were made.

The University of Florida has held commencement ceremonies at two-thirds of its 17 colleges and has not experienced disruptions, university president Ben Sasse , a former Republican senator from Nebraska, told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. The university is holding three more ceremonies Sunday, he said. Sasse called himself a “First Amendment zealot” who will always defend students’ rights to free speech and assembly. But university rules mean “you don’t get to take over the whole university. People don’t get to spit at cops. You don’t get to barricade yourselves in buildings. You don’t get to disrupt somebody else’s commencement,” he said, adding that camping on campus is also prohibited. Leaders of some other universities “need to step up and mind their own shops more,” Sasse said.

New York Mayor Eric Adams was asked on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday whether colleges in the city will be able to hold peaceful in-person graduation ceremonies . “I believe they should,” Adams (D) replied. “It’s a wonderful experience to graduate from an institution. If the institutions decide to graduate their students and celebrate a beautiful experience with their families, we’ll make sure it’s done in a peaceful manner.”

More than 2,300 people have been arrested on campuses nationwide over the past two weeks , according to a count kept by The Washington Post.

At the University of Virginia on Saturday, authorities arrested 25 pro-Palestinian demonstrators during a sustained confrontation , university officials said, after dozens of law enforcement officers in riot gear surrounded a student encampment and used pepper spray to disperse people from the area.

Several colleges and universities are negotiating deals with students to try to defuse tensions peacefully and avert further violence. Thus far, Rutgers, Northwestern, Brown, the University of Minnesota and the University of California at Riverside are some of the colleges that have struck deals. Students have been calling for universities to divest from Israel.

LOS ANGELES — The University of Southern California’s University Park Campus is closed on Sunday as authorities are working to clear a protest encampment.

Officials said anyone who does not comply with police will be arrested, The Associated Press reported.

Videos posted on social media showed Los Angeles Police Department officers in riot gear assembling on campus, according to CNN. The pro-Palestinian protest encampment was set about 12 days ago, NBC News reported.

The University of Southern California Department of Public Safety said on X , formerly known as Twitter , on Sunday that the University Park Campus was closed due to “significant activity at the center of campus.” Authorities are urging people on campus to leave.

On X , USC said that DPS is working with the Los Angeles Police Department to clear the area.

UPC has been closed as a result of significant activity at the center of campus. If you are in the center of campus, please leave. People who don’t leave will be arrested. We will issue another alert when it is clear to return. — USC DPS (@USCDPS) May 5, 2024

The encampment restarted after the Los Angeles Police Department arrested around 93 people on campus on April 24, the AP reported. Since then, it had remained calm. Most of the attention had however shifted to the protests and arrests at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The move to get protestors off campus comes days before commencement events are expected to begin, according to the AP.

As of Sunday morning, no arrests have been made.

After canceling its mainstage commencement ceremony amid pro-Palestinian protests, USC has announced plans for a “Trojan Family” graduation event next week at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The event will take place Thursday, May 9 at 8:30 p.m. USC announced on Thursday. The university promises a drone show, fireworks, surprise performances and the Trojan Marching Band. The university also promised a special gift for the class of 2024.

The celebration will share the L.A. Coliseum with several other groups around the same time, so the USC Trojan Family graduate event will be limited to a portion of the venue. Each graduate will receive up to six tickets for their guests, the university said, and will be limited to “graduates and their families and loved ones.”

USC said it was unable to secure the entire venue, because it was already booked. The announcement for the event said that USC President Carol Folt “has created a major kick-off to three days and nights of commencement events to honor you and those who’ve helped you along the way.”

The announcement does not mention how pro-Palestinian demonstrators had recently erected an encampment in Alumni Park. On April 24, police arrested 93 students and off-campus activists during the protest, one of several demonstrations at campuses across the country, including neighboring UCLA.

USC expects to confer over 18,000 degrees from May 8-11 for its commencement week with a slew of events to celebration the occasion . New security measures have also been put in place.

All vehicle and pedestrian access to the university campus will be limited to two entrances, USC’s Department of Public Safety announced in a news release Thursday . The entrances are located at the northeast and northwest sides of the campus, referred to as the McCarthy and McClintock entrances.

The limited access will be in effect 24 hours a day. The entrance to Watt Way is closed, but that south side could be reopened barring traffic conditions, according to university officials.

A temporary, separate interior fence will greet guests to the campus who are approaching outside of a vehicle, with pedestrians being asked to enter the university at McCarthy Way at the quad; the north side of Watt Way at 34th Street; and McClintock Avenue at Childs Way.

All USC students and employees will need to show their campus IDs to enter the campus or access the interior fence, according to USC. Guests will need to pre-register with the university online and show their QR code generated from the USC visitor registration website and a government-issued ID. Each registration must be completed daily and can be registered by a USC student, faculty or staff member.

13 days that rocked USC: How a derailed commencement brought ‘complete disaster’

How USC’s controversial decision on Asna Tabassum’s valedictorian speech led to nearly two weeks of campus tension with 93 arrests and a canceled ‘main stage’ commencement.

April 27, 2024

The new safety measures follows days of protests at the private university in South L.A. Tickets will be required to access the campus and for all commencement events taking place during commencement week.

Guests will be screened much in the same way that security checks bags at sporting events, according to the university.

But the university’s main stage commencement ceremony, which draws 65,000-attendees to the campus , was canceled after the administration rescinded Asna Tabassum’s graduation speaking spot as USC valedictorian.

Tabassum, a biomedical engineering major with a passion for social justice who minored in “resistance to genocide,” drew undisclosed threats to the university.

The university’s decisions leading up to the cancellation has drawn criticism from both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel activists.

Long Beach, CA - Findings of the 2024 Homeless Point in Time Count reveal that Long Beach identified 3,376 people experiencing homelessness in January 2024, compared with 3,447 people in 2023. This number signifies a 2.1% decrease from last year-the first time the City has reported an overall decrease in homelessness since 2017. "I am very encouraged by the 2024 Homeless Point in Time Count numbers," said Mayor Rex Richardson. "For the first time in seven years, we are reporting a drop in overall homelessness, including a nearly 50% reduction in youth homelessness. It's clear that the work the City has done in addressing homelessness is beginning to turn the tide. These numbers let us know we are on the right track and must continue on in the work." After the homeless population in Long Beach jumped significantly following the COVID-19 pandemic, the City proclaimed a local emergency to strengthen the City's preparedness and ability to respond. The emergency, which was in place from Jan. 10, 2023, through Feb. 28, 2024, put into place policies and programs that provided immediate assistance and laid the groundwork for positive long-term outcomes.

Anti-war protesters leave USC after police arrive, while Northeastern ceremony proceeds calmly

Students protesting the war in Gaza abandoned their camp at the University of Southern California early Sunday after being surrounded by police and threatened with arrest, while Northeastern University's commencement ended peacefully at Boston's Fenway Park.

Developments in both places were being watched closely following scores of arrests last month — more than 90 people at USC in Los Angeles and about 100 at Northeastern in Boston.

Dozens of Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived about 4 a.m. at USC to assist campus safety officers. The university had warned of arrests on social media and in person. Video showed some protesters packing up and leaving, while officers formed lines to push others away from the camp as it emptied out. The university said there were no reports of any arrests.

USC President Carol Folt said it was time to draw a line because “the occupation was spiraling in a dangerous direction” with areas of campus blocked and people being harassed.

“The operation was peaceful," Folt wrote in an update. “Campus is opening, students are returning to prepare for finals, and commencement set-up is in full swing.”

USC earlier canceled its main graduation ceremony while allowing other commencement activities to continue.

Across town at the University of California, Los Angeles, officials announced the creation of a new chief safety officer position to oversee campus security operations. The announcement Sunday came after UCLA was criticized for its handling of demonstrations that culminated in a mob attack on a pro-Palestinian student encampment last week.

At the Northeastern commencement Sunday, some students waved small Palestinian and Israeli flags, but were outnumbered by those waving the flags of India and the U.S., among others. Undergraduate student speaker Rebecca Bamidele drew brief cheers when she called for peace in Gaza.

The Associated Press has tallied about 2,500 people arrested at about 50 campuses since April 18, based on its reporting and statements from universities and law enforcement.

Arrests continued apace over the weekend. At the University of Virginia, there were 25 arrests Saturday for trespassing after police clashed with protesters who refused to remove tents. At the Art Institute of Chicago campus, police cleared a pro-Palestinian encampment hours after it was set up Saturday and arrested 68 people, saying they would be charged with criminal trespass.

In Charlottesville, Virginia, student demonstrators began their protest on a lawn outside the school chapel Tuesday. Video on Saturday showed police in riot gear and holding shields lined up on campus, while protesters chanted “Free Palestine.”

As police moved in, students were pushed to the ground, pulled by their arms and sprayed with a chemical irritant, Laura Goldblatt, an assistant professor who has been helping the demonstrators, told The Washington Post. The university said protesters were told that tents were banned under school policy and were asked to remove them.

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares told Fox News on Sunday the police response was justified because students had been warned repeatedly to leave, were violating the school's conduct code, and that outsiders who were not students provided protesters with supplies like wooden barriers.

"We’ve seen folks that are not students show up in riot gear with bull horns to direct the protesters on how to flank our officers," Miyares said.

He said some had put bear spray into water bottles and thrown them at officers.

It was the latest clash in weeks of protests and tension at U.S. colleges and universities.

Tent encampments of protesters urging universities to stop doing business with Israel or companies they say support the war in Gaza have spread in a student movement unlike any other this century . Some schools reached agreements with protesters to end the demonstrations and reduce the possibility of disrupting final exams and commencements.

The University of Michigan was among the schools that had braced for protests during commencement this weekend, as were Indiana University, Ohio State University and Northeastern. More ceremonies are planned in the coming weeks.

In Ann Arbor, there was a protest at the beginning of the event at Michigan Stadium. About 75 people, many wearing traditional Arabic kaffiyehs along with their graduation caps, marched up the main aisle toward the stage.

They chanted “Regents, regents, you can’t hide! You are funding genocide!” while holding signs, including one that read: “No universities left in Gaza.”

Overhead, planes pulled banners with competing messages. “Divest from Israel now! Free Palestine!” and “We stand with Israel. Jewish lives matter.”

Officials said no one was arrested, and the protest didn’t seriously interrupt the nearly two-hour event, attended by tens of thousands of people, some of them waving Israeli flags.

At Indiana University, protesters urged supporters to wear their kaffiyehs and walk out during remarks by school President Pamela Whitten on Saturday evening. The Bloomington campus designated a protest zone outside Memorial Stadium, where the ceremony was held.

At Princeton University in New Jersey, 18 students began a hunger strike to try to push the university to divest from companies tied to Israel. Students at other colleges, including Brown and Yale, launched similar hunger strikes this year before the more recent wave of demonstrations.

The protests stem from the conflict that started Oct. 7 when Hamas militants attacked southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking roughly 250 hostages. Vowing to destroy Hamas, Israel launched an offensive in Gaza that has killed more than 34,500 Palestinians, about two-thirds of them women and children, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory. Israeli strikes have devastated the enclave and displaced most of its inhabitants.

Perry reported form Meredith, New Hampshire, and Marcelo from New York. Also contributing were Associated Press reporters Christopher Weber in Los Angeles; Denise Lavoie in Richmond, Virginia; Ed White in Detroit, and Adrian Sainz in Memphis, Tennessee.
