Business Customs

India is a diverse nation with 28 States, eight Union Territories, and dozens of major languages and cultural groups. This diversity gives rise to a variety of business customs. One factor common among them all, however, is the importance of personal relationships. Building a strong personal reputation, establishing rapport, and cultivating goodwill are essential to establishing contacts and strengthening relationships in India.

In India, meeting times and schedules may not be followed as strictly as in the United States. It is not uncommon in India for people to arrive late, and last-minute cancellations for business events and meetings are possible. When arranging itineraries in India, it is important to build flexibility into your plans.

A handshake is typical upon meeting, although some Indians may use “nameskhar/namaste,” a common greeting in which the palms are pressed together with fingers pointing upwards accompanied by a slight bow. This greeting has become more common during the pandemic. Small talk at the beginning of a business meeting is common and may include questions about family or occupation. At meals, it is considered polite in India to inquire about dietary preferences, as many Hindus abstain from beef, while Muslims abstain from pork, and Indians of many religions are vegetarian.

The business card ritual is not as formal in India as in other countries, though it is essential to carry a supply of presentable business cards. When offering your card, both hands should be used. Receive cards with your right hand. Cards in English are acceptable, and it is not necessary to print business cards in local languages.

Travel Advisories

Please see the  U.S. Department of State consular information sheet  for India.

All U.S. citizens visiting or residing in India are strongly encouraged to register for the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  (STEP). This free service allows U.S. citizens and U.S. nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. STEP automatically provides important information about safety conditions in country. Enrollment helps the U.S. Embassy, as well as family and friends, to contact you in the case of an emergency.

Visa Requirements

All U.S. citizens need a valid passport and visa to enter and exit India for any purpose. Please ensure you have the correct type of visa for your planned activities in the country. Many visitors, including those on official U.S. government business, must apply for visas at an Indian embassy or consulate abroad before entering the country. If you have an incorrect visa type, you may be refused entry and typically will not be permitted to change your immigration category (e.g., from tourist to work visa) once you have entered India. Indian visa regulations can change with little notice. Please note that the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India are unable to assist if you arrive without proper documentation.

Updated information on the COVID-19 pandemic can be found on the Embassy’s COVID-19 webpage . The government of India has resumed issuance of some visa categories, including business visas. A list of permitted categories for travel to India is available on the  Embassy of India Washington, D.C. website . Entry requirements are also described on the Frequently Asked Question section on the Indian Bureau of Immigration website.

For the most current information on entry and exit requirements, contact the Embassy of India at 2536 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20008; telephone (202) 939-9888; or the Indian Consulates in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Atlanta, or Houston. Outside the United States, inquiries should be made at the nearest Indian embassy or consulate. General information regarding Indian visa and immigration rules, including the addresses and telephone numbers for the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer offices, can be found at the Indian Bureau of Immigration website.

Please carry photocopies of the bio-data page of your U.S. passport and the pages containing the Indian visa and Indian immigration stamps. If your passport is lost or stolen, copies will help you apply for a replacement passport and an exit visa.

U.S. citizens of Pakistani origin or descent are subject to further administrative processing and should expect additional delays when applying for Indian visas.

Tourists: Please visit the Indian government’s Visa Portal for information regarding tourist visa issuance and the eligibilities and requirements for this visa type. Visas are not available upon arrival for U.S. citizens without an electronic travel authorization. You may be denied admission if you do not have a valid passport and visa.

Diplomatic and Official Visas: Applications for official visa categories are accepted directly at the Indian Embassy and Consulates in the United States. All U.S. government employees, including military personnel, must obtain country clearance for travel to India. Once you receive your visa, check it carefully to ensure the visa type and number of entries is appropriate for your travel plans.

Foreigner Registration Requirements: In addition to having the appropriate visa upon arrival, all foreigners visiting India for more than 180 days, or those on student, medical, research, or employment visas, are required to register with the closest Foreigners Regional Registration Officer within 14 days of arrival. General instructions for registration by foreigners in India are available at the Indian Bureau of Immigration website.

Overstay and Visa Violations: If you overstay your Indian visa or otherwise violate Indian visa regulations, you must file an online application for exit permission. Generally, you will be fined and, in some cases, may be imprisoned. Visa violators seeking exit permission are requested to file an online application. Processing of an exit visa under these circumstances may take considerable time and decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

U.S. companies that require travel of foreign employees to the United States are advised that security evaluations are handled through an interagency process. Visa applicants should refer to the  State Department visa website .

The currency used in India is the Indian Rupee (₹). Other currencies are not commonly accepted. There are Authorized Foreign Exchange dealers in most big cities and banks will also change your currency if needed. ATMs are widely available but not all accept international debit and credit cards. Visa, MasterCard, and American Express credit and debit cards are accepted at shops, restaurants, and hotels. However, a variety of vendors and businesses cannot process payments with international cards. Also, transactions with taxis, markets, and small street shops often require cash. You may find it useful to keep a significant amount of cash in rupees and in small denominations. Digital payment options like Google Pay, Paytm, and PayPal are widely used but often require local phone numbers or local bank accounts. Traveler’s checks can be cashed at most money exchange counters, hotels, and airports.

Telecommunications/Electronics

If your phone is unlocked, buying an Indian SIM card will help you save on roaming charges. India has the cheapest mobile data in the world, with an average price of $0.68 for one gigabyte as compared to the world average of $4.21. There are four major mobile phone operators in India – Reliance Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and state-owned BSNL/MTNL. However, the government is currently considering shutting down MTNL and shifting its staff and operations to BSNL.

You can buy a SIM card at the airport or from an authorized dealer. You need the following documents to buy a SIM card:

  • Photocopy of your passport and the original document
  • Photocopy of your visa and the original document
  • Photocopy of your e-visa if you are using one
  • Two passport photos
  • Proof of address of the country you live in (e.g., a utility bill or official government document such as a driver’s license), and
  • Proof of address where you are staying in India.

Warning: Prohibition on use of satellite telephones in India: The use of satellite phones in India is illegal without prior approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Anyone carrying an unlicensed satellite phone is likely to face heavy fines and detention. The use and operation of telegraphic services or devices in India is regulated by the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885. Per existing guidelines issued by the DoT, Inmarsat satellite phone services, excluding BGAN systems, can be used by the government, corporations, members of mountaineering expeditions, and other such categories with prior permission from DoT. Iridium and Thuraya satellite phone services are not permitted in India. Tata Communications Ltd. may facilitate satellite telephone services in India. If satellite phones are brought into India without DoT approval, the equipment may be confiscated by customs authorities until the owner of the satellite phone is able to produce a license issued by the Indian DoT.

Wi-Fi: Most hotels and many cafes are equipped with wireless internet.

Voltage: Voltage in India is 220 volts. Plugs are Type C and D. You will need a voltage converter and plug adapter to use U.S. appliances. Power can be unreliable in India and outages are common even in hotels and shopping malls.

Phone Dialing: The following dialing instructions may be useful:

India country code = 91

AC = Area code

CC = Country code

Transportation

To and from india .

International commercial travel has resumed post COVID-19 and is at operational capacity. There are direct flights from the United States to a major India cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Flight times are 14-16 hours. Getting to Eastern India from the United States requires a connection, with more and faster options typically through Europe or the Middle East. Travelers from the U.S. West Coast might consider going through Seoul, Tokyo, or Singapore.

Most international flights to India from the United States arrive and leave either early in the morning or late at night. An airport pickup organized by your hotel is often the best option. India has many domestic airlines like Air India, IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet. Global travel aggregators such as Expedia, Cleartrip, Yatra, and Make-My-Trip can help in booking domestic tickets for travel within India.

Within India

Road traffic in India drives on the left. Road travel in India can be hazardous, especially at night. The safest driving policy is always to drive conservatively and assume that other drivers may not respond to a traffic situation in the same way drivers would in the United States. Be prepared for vehicles that run red lights and merge directly into traffic at yield points and traffic circles. Use your horn or flash your headlights frequently to announce your presence – it is customary to do so in India.

As a pedestrian, it is important to be alert while crossing streets and intersections, especially after dark, as traffic is moving from the left. Vehicles regularly drive in the opposite direction of traffic, and you should exercise extreme caution when crossing streets, even in marked pedestrian areas.

It is recommended to consider hiring a car and driver when regular transportation is needed. A wide range of car services are available in India and most hotels or travel agents can help you arrange a car for hire. Car services like Uber and its Indian equivalents Ola and BluSmart are also available. Some automobile transportation services provide cars chauffeured by women. An Indian or valid international driver’s license is required to drive in India.

Travel by train entails significant advanced planning and can be slow. It is therefore not recommended for business travel. Buses are also not recommended for business travel.

India boasts dozens of languages and thousands of dialects, but English is common and most businesspeople and working professionals will speak English fluently. However, during your stay you should expect to encounter people who speak limited or no English. The American accent can also be difficult for some Indians to understand, and Americans may likewise have difficulty understanding the Indian accent. Patience, a sense of humor, and rephrasing what you want to say slowly and clearly can often help bridge the communication gap.

Most official signs are trilingual using the local language (if not Hindi), Hindi, and English. One exception is the state of Tamil Nadu, in South India, where signs are in Tamil and English.

The quality of medical care in India varies considerably. Adequate private medical care that meets international standards is available in major cities, but adequate medical care can be limited or unavailable elsewhere. All travelers are urged to obtain insurance that covers the costs of medical care and medical evacuation back to the United States or a third country. U.S. citizens who travel to India are strongly urged to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before travel and to take personal health safety measure to protect themselves. This includes practicing social or physical distancing, cleaning hands with soap and hand sanitizer, wearing masks wherever necessary, and avoiding crowded areas with poor ventilation.

Information on vaccinations and other health precautions, such as food and water safety, insect bite protection, and malaria information may be obtained from the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s  hotline for international travelers at 1-877-FYI-TRIP (1-877-394-8747). Information about outbreaks of infectious diseases abroad can be obtained from the  World Health Organization .

Emergencies: For a public ambulance anywhere in the country, call 102. The national emergency number is 112. Private ambulance services are also available. Because of ambulance delays due to traffic congestion, a taxi or private car may be necessary. For foreigners, upfront payment by cash or credit card is often required by hospitals prior to services or treatment. However, significant upfront payment may be waived by hospitals that have existing cashless agreements with major international insurance providers. Regardless of one’s ability to pay, all hospitals are required to provide emergency stabilization. Lists of medical providers grouped by major city and state are located on the U.S. Citizens Services section  of the State Department’s website.

Highly specialized cases or complex emergencies may require medical evacuation. Air ambulances are costly and can be cost-prohibitive without travel insurance. Singapore and Bangkok are typical medical evacuation destinations.

Medical Insurance: Ensure that your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas as most U.S. medical insurance plans do not cover care provided outside of the United States. U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See the  State Department’s webpage  for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage. Supplemental insurance to cover medical care and evacuation is strongly encouraged.

Vaccinations: You should receive all  vaccinations for India recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . For those arriving from Sub-Saharan Africa or other yellow-fever areas, Indian health regulations require evidence of vaccination against yellow fever. Without proof, you are subject to detention or quarantine.

Malaria risk varies depending on the time of year and areas visited. Transmission occurs throughout the year and is highest following the monsoon season from June through September. Please consult the  CDC  for additional information.

Dengue fever presents a significant risk in urban and rural areas. The highest number of cases is reported from July to December, with cases peaking from September to October. Daytime insect precautions such as wearing long-sleeved shirts and mosquito repellent are recommended by the CDC.

There are many feral dogs in India, including in major cities. Dogs and bats create a high risk of rabies transmission in most of the country. Vaccination is recommended for all prolonged stays, especially for young children and travelers in rural areas.

Avoid feeding monkeys, which are common even in the center of major cities, as they can also transmit rabies and other serious diseases. If bitten, clean the bite for 15 minutes and immediately seek medical attention.

Air Pollution: Air quality is a significant problem in many cities in India. Consider consulting your doctor prior to travel regarding how seasonal smog and heavy particulate pollution may affect you. The air quality is typically at its worst in the winter. Anyone who travels where pollution levels are high is at risk but those at greatest risk include infants, children, and teens; people over 65 years of age; people with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema; people with heart disease or diabetes; and people who work or are active outdoors. Current air quality data can be found on the  Embassy’s Air Quality  page. The data on this site is updated hourly.

Food and Drink: Only ice-free bottled water, soft drinks, and hot tea and coffee are considered safe to consume. Avoid eating undercooked food, unpeeled fruits and vegetables, or food from restaurants where proper sanitary practices are not guaranteed. An upset stomach is very common for travelers to India. You may wish to travel with drugs like loperamide to alleviate the symptoms of diarrhea. Indian pharmacies are well-stocked in urban areas and can provide a variety of medications without prescription.

Local Time, Business Hours, and Holidays

India has one time zone and is five-and-a-half hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time. Because it has not adopted Daylight Savings Time and uses Indian Standard Time year-round, the time difference between India and the United States varies depending on the time of year. India is nine and a half hours ahead of Washington, D.C., during Eastern Daylight Time and ten and a half hours ahead of Washington, D.C., during Eastern Standard Time.

India’s work week is Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with a half-day on Saturday for select occupations. In some large cities such as Mumbai, businesses start working earlier to avoid congested traffic while commuting. Lunch breaks are typically 30 minutes, usually between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Banking hours for cash transactions are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays and 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Some state and nationalized banks follow an alternate Saturday off schedule. In major metropolitan cities, several foreign and Indian-owned banks provide 24-hour banking services. Customers can visit the bank at any time during the bank’s working hours to conduct business.

Most holidays in India, except for a few national holidays, are regional in nature. Central government organizations that include public service offices, industrial, commercial, and trading establishments have about 16 holidays as a combination of national and state holidays. India celebrates three national holidays on fixed dates of the year. In addition, 14 mandatory holidays are issued every year by each state based on local festivals and prevalent religious and linguistic demographics. U.S. companies are advised to check for regional or national holidays through local contacts before arranging business meetings and travel plans.

AnchorTemporary Entry of Materials or Personal Belongings

All goods entering India are subject to customs inspection and clearance. An individual must be in India and is usually required to be present during the customs clearance process. Most household goods and personal effects are granted tax and duty-free entry provided they have been used and in the individual’s possession for a minimum of six months.

Indian customs authorities encourage the use of an ATA (Admission Temporaire/Temporary Admission) Carnet for the temporary admission of professional equipment, commercial samples, and goods for exhibitions and trade fair purposes. ATA Carnet Headquarters, located at the U.S. Council for International Business, 1212 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY, 10036, issues and guarantees the ATA Carnet in the United States. For additional information call (212) 354-4480.

Before traveling to or from India, you are urged to inspect all bags and clothing thoroughly to ensure they do not contain prohibited items. U.S. citizens have been arrested or detained when airport security officials discovered loose ammunition (even spent cartridges, casings, or souvenirs) or weapons in their luggage. If you are found to have ammunition on your person or in your bags, you could be charged with violation of the Indian Arms Act, incarcerated, and/or deported from India.

Consult India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs  website for more information.

The food in India is also quite different from what the tourist is probably used to. Indian cuisine is very spicy, so the tourist should be prepared for that. There are also a lot of vegetarian and vegan options available, as many Indians do not eat meat.

Finally, the tourist should be prepared for the poverty that they will see in India. While there are some very wealthy people in the country, there is also a large population that lives in poverty.

The tourist should not take photos of people living in poverty without their permission, as this can be seen as disrespectful.

USA Travel Checklist – Items to Carry & Things To Do

Forms to fill when traveling from india to usa, vaccinations for us citizens traveling to india.

I actually have a question about travel times and dates. If I need to arrive in Chennai, India, for an event beginning on August 4 (including one day of rest before the event), on what day should I schedule my departure? I’m a bit confused about change of time zones and duration of flights. Thank you so much.

Hi Patty, I’d say you need to travel in the last week of July. Not sure how long your flight is but assuming it’s the longest one with ab out 24+ hours, you’d need to be in Chennai atleast on the 2nd of August (which is the 1st of August in US). To be safe, I’d recommend booking the flight on 30th or 31st of July.

India - Business Travel India-Business-Travel

Business Customs There is no single way to understand a country as vast and diverse as India.  What is true in one place might not be in another.  That said, business visitors may find the following useful: Meeting times or schedules are not always followed as strictly as in the United States.  It is not uncommon in India for people to show up late for business events.  Many Indians are aware of Americans’ more rigorous adherence to time schedules and will be accommodating, but it is important to build flexibility into your plans. A handshake is typical upon meeting someone, although some Indians may use the pranam: a common greeting involving pressing your palms together with fingers pointing upwards and accompanied by a slight bow.  Small talk at the beginning of a business meeting is common and may include questions about family.  At meals, it is considered polite in India to inquire about dietary preferences, since Hindus typically abstain from beef, Muslims typically abstain from pork, and Indians of many religions are vegetarians.  The business card ritual is not so formal as in China or Japan, but it is a good idea to carry presentable cards with you.  When offering your card, both hands should be used.  Receive cards with your right hand.  Cards in English only are fine, so you do not need to print them in local languages.  Travel Advisory The U.S. Department of State consular information sheet for India can be found at: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages/India.html All U.S. citizens visiting or residing in India are strongly encouraged to register for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at https://step.state.gov/step/ .  This is a free service that allows U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.  STEP will then automatically provide you important information about safety conditions in the country.  Enrollment also helps the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency and can help family and friends contact you in an emergency as well.  If you are a Facebook user, you may also wish to “like” our page to receive additional information about American Citizen Services in India. Visa Requirements All U.S. citizens need a valid passport and valid Indian visa to enter and exit India for any purpose.  Please ensure you have the correct type of visa for your planned activity in India.  Many visitors, including those on official U.S. government business, must apply for visas at an Indian embassy or consulate abroad before entering the country.  If you have the incorrect visa you may be refused entry, and typically will not be permitted to change your immigration category (e.g., from tourist to work visa) once you have entered the country.  Indian visa regulations can change with little notice.  Please note, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates General in India cannot assist you if you arrive without proper documentation.  Many Indian visas may be obtained in the United States through Cox & Kings Global Services , the Government of India’s visa contractor.  You may review the information on the Cox & Kings Global Services website to determine your purpose for travel and the most appropriate visa category.  Entry requirements are also described on the Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) section on the Indian Bureau of Immigration website. For the most current information on entry and exit requirements, contact the Embassy of India at 2536 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008, telephone (202) 939-9806 or the Indian Consulates in Chicago , New York , San Francisco , Atlanta , or Houston .  Outside the United States, inquiries should be made at the nearest Indian embassy or consulate.  General information regarding Indian visa and immigration rules, including the addresses and telephone numbers for the Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) offices, can be found at the Indian Bureau of Immigration website . Please carry photocopies of the bio-data page of your U.S. passport and the pages containing the Indian visa and Indian immigration stamps.  If your passport is lost or stolen, copies will help you apply for a replacement passport and an exit visa.  U.S. citizens of Pakistani origin or descent are subject to administrative processing and should expect additional delays when applying for Indian visas. Tourists: U.S. citizens seeking to enter India solely for tourist purposes, and who plan to stay no longer than 60 days, may apply for an electronic travel authorization at least four days prior to their arrival in lieu of applying for a tourist visa at an Indian embassy or consulate.  Please visit the Indian government's e-Visa website for additional information regarding the eligibilities and requirements for this type of visa.  Without the electronic travel authorization, visas are not available upon arrival for U.S. citizens.  If you do not have a valid passport and visa you may be denied admission. Diplomatic and Official visas: Applications for official visa categories are accepted directly at the Indian Embassy and Consulates in the United States.  All U.S. government employees, including military personnel, must obtain country clearance for travel to India.  Once you have received your visa, check it carefully to ensure that the type of visa and number of entries is appropriate for your travel plans.                                                    Foreigner Registration Requirements : In addition to having the appropriate visa upon arrival, all foreigners visiting India for more than 180 days, or those on Student, Medical, Research or Employment Visas, are required to register with the closest Foreigners Regional Registration Officer (FRRO) within 14 days of arrival.  A FRRO office contact list is available online listing local offices.  General instructions for registration by foreigners in India are available at the Indian Bureau of Immigration website . Overstay & Visa Violations :  If you overstay your Indian visa, or otherwise violate Indian visa regulations, you may require clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs to leave the country.  Generally, you will be fined and, in some cases, may be jailed for months.  Visa violators seeking an exit clearance are requested to schedule an online appointment at the Ministry of Home Affairs website before visiting the Visa Facilitation Center at The Ministry of Home Affairs, Foreigners Division, NDCC-II Building, Sai Singh Road, New Delhi 110001 (tel.  91-11-2343-8037).  Processing of an exit visa under these circumstances can take up to 90 days and decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.  Currency The currency used in India is the rupee and other currencies are not commonly accepted.  There are Authorized Foreign Exchange dealers in most big cities, and banks will also change your currency if you have time for the paperwork.  ATMs are widely available and virtually all will accept a card from any of the major U.S. ATM networks. Visa, MasterCard, and American Express credit and debit cards are widely accepted.  However, transactions with taxis, markets, and similar situations may require cash.  You may find it useful to have some cash rupees available and to know where the nearest ATM is if more is needed. Traveler’s checks are cashed at almost all money exchange counters, hotels, and airports. Telecommunications/Electronics Cell Phones: The cellular phone technology predominately used in India is GSM; however, CDMA network service is available.  So, if your current U.S. cell phone is enabled with international calling, you can take it and use it in India.  Contact your cellular service provider before departure to ask about options available in India. SIM Cards: If your U.S. cell phone is “frequency unlocked” (ask your service provider), then you can also use your U.S. cell phone by replacing its SIM card for one serviced by a local operator.  Prepaid packages are affordable, but the process can be bureaucratic and somewhat difficult.  You may need to provide things like a copy of your passport, visa, a passport sized photo, and wait 24 to 48 hours for the card to be activated.  Satellite Phones & Other Restricted Items: Possession and import of satellite-based communication devices is unlawful in India.  Do not bring a satellite phone to India.  It is advisable to contact the Embassy of India in Washington or one of India's consulates in the United States for specific information regarding this and other customs restrictions.  More information is available from the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs . Wi-Fi: Although speeds vary, virtually all hotels are equipped with internet and Wi-Fi. Voltage: Voltage in India is 220 volts and plugs are Type C and D.  You will need a voltage converter and plug adapter to use U.S. appliances. Phone Dialing: While telecommunication service is generally adequate in India, knowing what digits to dial can be a little complicated, especially between landlines and cell phones, and when making international calls.   The following dialing instructions are worth keeping handy: AC = area code CC = country code

Caller in USA to Local Cell Phone    [011] + 91+Local Cell number Caller in USA to Local Landline    [011] + 91+AC+Number Local landline to international number        00+CC+AC+Number Local landline to local long distance              0+AC+Number Local Landline to Local Cell Phone   Local cell number Local Cell to India Landline   0+AC+number Local Cell to Local Cell    Local   cell   number Local Cell to Local Cell (in another city)   0+Cell number Local Cell to International long distance  00+CC+AC+Number

The country code for India is 91 Major Indian city area codes: Ahmedabad        79 Bangalore           80 Chennai               44 Delhi                     11 Hyderabad          40 Kolkata                33 Mumbai               22 Pune                     20

Transportation To and From India There are direct flights between the United States and India on Air India and United Airlines that go to either New Delhi or Mumbai.  Flight times are 14-16 hours.  Getting to South or East India from the United States requires a connection, with the most and (often) fastest options through Europe.  Travelers from the West Coast might consider going through Bangkok or Singapore. Within India Traffic in India moves on the left.  It is important to be alert while crossing streets and intersections—especially after dark—as traffic is coming in the “wrong” direction (i.e., from the left).  You should exercise extreme caution when crossing streets, even in marked pedestrian areas. When regular transport is needed, many foreign visitors to India hire a car and driver.  This is highly recommended over driving one’s self.  A wide range of car services are available in India.  Car services like Uber and its Indian counterpart, Ola, are widely available, and some car services provide cars chauffeured by women.  To drive in India, either a valid Indian drivers’ license or a valid international drivers’ license is required. Road travel in India can be hazardous, especially at night.  Several U.S. citizens have suffered fatal traffic accidents in recent years. On Indian roads, the safest driving policy is always to drive conservatively and assume that other drivers may not respond to a traffic situation in the same way drivers would in the United States.  Be prepared for vehicles that run red lights and merge directly into traffic at yield points and traffic circles.  Use your horn or flash your headlights frequently to announce your presence.  It is both customary and wise.  Buses, patronized by hundreds of millions of Indians, are convenient in that they serve almost every city of every size.  However, they are usually driven fast and without due consideration for official rules of the road.  Accidents are common. Heavy traffic is the norm and includes (but is not limited to) overloaded trucks and buses, scooters, pedestrians, bullock and camel carts, horse or elephant riders on the way to weddings, and free-roaming livestock.  If a driver hits a pedestrian or a cow, the vehicle and its occupants are at risk of being attacked by passersby.  Such attacks pose significant risk of injury or death to the vehicle's occupants or risk of incineration of the vehicle.  It could be unsafe to remain at the scene of an accident of this nature, and drivers may instead wish to seek out the nearest police station.  Protestors often use road blockage as a means of publicizing their grievances, causing severe inconvenience to travelers.  Visitors should monitor local news reports for any reports of road disturbances. Language English is quite common in India, which boasts dozens of languages and thousands of dialects.  Most business people will speak English quite fluently.  However, during your stay you should expect to encounter many who speak limited English or none.  Even for those who do speak English, the American accent can be difficult for some Indians to understand, and Americans sometimes also struggle with the Indian accent.  Patience, a sense of humor, and rephrasing what you want to say slowly and clearly can often overcome such difficulties. Most official signs are trilingual in the local language (if not Hindi), Hindi and English.  One exception is Tamil Nadu, where signs are in Tamil and English. Health The quality of medical care in India varies considerably.  Adequate private medical care that meets many international standards is available in major cities, but elsewhere adequate medical care is can be limited or unavailable.  Information on vaccinations and other health precautions, such as food and water safety, insect bite protection, and malaria information may be obtained from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s hotline for international travelers at 1-877-FYI-TRIP (1-877-394-8747) or via the CDC’s web-site at http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/india.htm . For information about outbreaks of infectious diseases abroad consult the World Health Organization’s (WHO) website at http://www.who.int/countries/ind/en/ . Emergencies: Highly specialized cases or complex emergencies may require evacuation.  Singapore and Bangkok, Thailand are frequent destinations.  For a public ambulance anywhere in the country, call 102. The national emergency number is 112.  Private ambulance services are also often available.  Because of ambulance delays due to traffic congestion, taxi or private car may be necessary.  For foreigners, upfront payment by cash or credit card is often required by hospitals prior to services or treatment.  But upfront payment of other than a modest deposit may be waived by hospitals that have existing cashless agreements with at least some major international insurance providers.  Regardless of the ability to pay, all hospitals are required to provide emergency stabilization. Medical Insurance : Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas.  Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments.  See our webpage for more information on insurance providers for overseas coverage.  Supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation is strongly encouraged. Vaccinations: Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .  If you transit through any part of sub-Saharan Africa, even for one day, you are advised to carry proof of yellow fever immunization.  For those arriving from Sub-Saharan Africa or other yellow-fever areas, Indian health regulations require evidence of vaccination against yellow fever.  If you do not have such proof, you could be subjected to detention and quarantine.  Malaria risk varies depending on the time of year and areas visited.  Transmission occurs throughout the year and is highest following the monsoon season that typically spans from June through September.  Please consult the CDC website for more information.  Dengue fever presents significant risk in urban and rural areas. The highest number of cases is reported from July to December, with cases peaking from September to October. Daytime insect precautions such as wearing long-sleeved shirts and mosquito repellent are recommended by the CDC. Dogs and bats create a high risk of rabies transmission in most of India.  Vaccination is recommended for all prolonged stays, especially for young children and travelers in rural areas.  It is also recommended for shorter stays that involve occupational exposure, locations more than 24 hours from reliable sources of rabies treatments, adventure travelers, hikers, cave explorers, and backpackers. Avoid feeding monkeys, as they can also transmit rabies and other serious diseases.  If bitten, immediately soak and scrub the bite for at least 15 minutes and seek urgent medical attention. Air Pollution: Air quality is a significant problem in many major cities in India.  Consider consulting your doctor prior to travel regarding how seasonal smog and heavy particulate pollution may affect you.  The air quality is typically at its worst in the winter.  Anyone who travels where pollution levels are high is at risk, but those at greatest risk include:

  • Infants, children, and teens
  • People over 65 years of age
  • People with lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema;
  • People with heart disease or diabetes
  • People who work or are active outdoors

Current air quality data can be found on the Embassy’s Air Quality page . The data on this site are updated hourly. Food and Drink:  It is safest to not drink hotel or restaurant water and to order drinks without ice.  Only bottled water, soft drinks, beer, wine, hot tea and coffee are considered safe.  Generally, avoid eating undercooked food, unpeeled fruit and vegetables, or food where kitchen practices are uncertain.  Consult your doctor about being prepared with drugs to alleviate the symptoms of diarrhea, like Imodium (loperamide). Local Time, Business Hours and Holidays Despite its geographic size, India has adopted one-time zone, five and one-half hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).  It has not adopted daylight savings time and uses standard time countrywide throughout the year.  Therefore, the time difference between India and the United States varies depending on the time of year.  India is nine hours and 30 minutes ahead of Washington, D.C., during daylight savings time and 10 hours and 30 minutes ahead of Washington, D.C., during standard time. The standard six-day working week is Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m.  to 5:30 p.m., with a half-day on Saturday.  Normally lunch is for one hour, between 1:00 p.m.  and 2:00 p.m.  However, in some large cities such as Mumbai, businesses start working earlier to avoid congested traffic while commuting. Central government offices are closed on Saturdays.  Banking hours are 10:00 a.m.  to 2:00 p.m. on weekdays and 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturdays.  In major metropolitan cities, several foreign and Indian-owned banks provide 24-hour banking services. Temporary Entry of Materials or Personal Belongings All goods entering India are subject to Customs inspection and clearance.  An individual must be in India and is usually required to be present during the Customs clearance process.  Most household goods and personal effects are granted tax and duty-free entry provided they have been used and in the individual’s possession for a minimum of six months. Indian customs authorities encourage the use of an ATA (Admission Temporaire/Temporary Admission) Carnet for the temporary admission of professional equipment, commercial samples, and/or goods for exhibitions and fair purposes.  ATA Carnet Headquarters, located at the U.S. Council for International Business , 1212 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10036, issues and guarantees the ATA Carnet in the United States.  For additional information call (212) 354-4480, or email USCIB for details. Before traveling to or from India, you are urged to inspect all bags and clothing thoroughly to ensure they do not inadvertently contain prohibited items.  U.S. citizens have been arrested or detained when airport security officials discovered loose ammunition (even spent individual bullets, casings, or souvenirs) or weapons in their luggage.  If you are found to have loose ammunition or bullets on your person or in your bags, you could be charged with violation of the Indian Arms Act, incarcerated, and/or deported from India.  Consult the Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs website for more information. Top 5 airlines flying to India

Overall mediocre-good, with the service on the flight operated by American Airlines being subpar and not the kind and standard you’d get from a Japan Airlines crew. The majority of the stewards on AA were not as gentle and friendly as those from Japan Airlines. Japan Airlines were more attentive to detail and your flight experience. AA was more interested in completing their tasks.

I was feeling very comfortable throughout the flight. I got more leg room than I expected from a Y class seat. But the food was a little disappointing.

All of the JAL flights in this itinerary were great. However the last leg of my flight from LAX to SFO was through Japan Air’s partner, AA which wqsn’t up to par. We were informed only minutes before boarding time of a delay despite the airlines knowing about the delay far earlier (the aircraft we would be taking arriving arrived and disembarked close to our boarding time, for all to see but AA still kept the original boarding time posted until last minute). Furthermore, once we boarded the taxi/wait time was also extended, with the pilot blaming “construction at SFO” for the delay, rather than taking accountability for the the plane’s late arrival coming into LAX. We took off approximately an hour later than scheduled. It’s for these reasons I adamantly avoid American Airlines when possible. Again, JAL was stellar.

Excellent crew, immediate attention for any request. Both ways on time (rather before time arrival at Haneda). Only complaint was that the seats are not reclining like rest of the airlines that I travelled. The Backrest is fixed. The reclining is only within the box seat, so you slide down forward for reclining, not backward. So it was bit uncomfortable. The food for the day trip was excellent. For the night flight, no breakfast was served, only dinner, which was disappointing.

At least it was not very cold inside the plane. I noticed there was now a bidet in the bathroom and that’s good! I didn’t like the window seat. Flight was smooth except for 1 turbulence. Plane was on time. Thanks. Food was not that great. Miso and green tea were good! As usual movies were old and there were no changes.

Food as always. PA was not clear, especially the English ones. Very limited Hollywood movies. Unlike the first flight I had, this plane has less leg room and less room for my under seat baggage.

I like the braised beef., miso soup,, and green tea. Very little choices of hollywood movies. The PA announcement in English was not very clear and very soft. I could hardly hear.

More updated movies & Chinese movies. The food sometimes overcooked. Prefer to have more neat snacks in between than just choose from the menu. Please change the menu every now and then. This is my second time flying within one year and the menu didn’t change at all!

Food is lagging. Very poor choice. Like vending machine fast food.

Please change the menu more often. The beef is not tender, more choice in ice cream flavor. Dessert is not good too.

I had a great experience with Singapore airlines as always. The partner airline, Scoot was fine except my bag was misplaced during the shuffle. Ultimately, my baggage arrived intact. Attempting to inquire about my baggage was impossible.

The Premium economy class is not the same as some other airlines because there are no economy seats on these planes. Basically you’re getting an economy seat that’s a little wider. The seats are not that much more comfortable. The service and food experience is similar to economy class on other Asian airlines. There aren’t enough toilets for the entire plane therefore we are forced to share the business class toilets that are closed off with curtains.

My experience with Scoot is very good. Will have no issue flying with Scoot again.

Excellent meal served with real utensils, cardboard served hot meals instead of plastic utensils and plastic covers. Quick service, friendly and accommodating stewards.

I commend the flight attendants on our SFO-SIN flight who went above and beyond to provide us with extra snacks and food. This type of service makes the flight experience personal and awesome.

I requested an aisle seat and got a middle seat The flight gate was changed and the flight was delayed

It was a great flight Food was great Crew was spectacular

In general good, but the machine seems to be long in operation and some functions were restricted as e. g. Adjusting of seats.

Cabin Crew always friendly and helpful. Seating cramped - foul smelling from toilets, high risk of disease. Guard personal property such as expensive sunglasses Coffee always awful and cold Meal trays toddler sized Not worth the extra cost to fly SQ - use a budget airline, same if not better experience

When boarding, after business class should be premium economy, but economy class already lined-up at the gate blocking premium economy to board. Singapore airline crew should done a better job to organize this chaos :( Thank you.

On time take off and early arrival, what else can one want

My last few flights with Emirates have always been delayed at least a half an hour. When my layover is only an hour and a half to two hours, 30 minutes makes a big difference. I’m going to check out other airlines.

we bought trip insurance from you and could not use it. 'underrated' only return 50 % of trip cost. my doctor told me i have stage 4 cancer and that I might not live till the end of the month..

Flight got canceled without any prior information and it caused lot of trouble

Worst ever. No assistance and communication from Emirates crew. No visibility of when the flight is flying. Couldn’t understand if we can go to lounge to take rest. Emirates system at a certain point said flight is not operating and suggested to take the next flight and in few minutes it suddenly opened the gate for boarding. unsupportive and rude crew. Worst experience ever. Flight was delayed by 5 hours so need the compensation for that.

Staff were friendly, and provided great service. The food was plentiful and delicious. Food could have been hotter.

I was traveling business purposes and I only had one carry on and a personal computer back pack . My carry on was 8.5 kg little more than allowable. At jfk airport check in they did not let me carry it . I was little disappointed.

More leg room and comfortable seats at least for long flights

The entertainment selections are amazing. But the live TV is sometimes spotty. If you’re going to have it, then have it. If you can’t make it consistent, then, perhaps it’s better not to have it. The crew are always cordial when approached, but they seem to do the minimum and sit around, talking to each other in the back of the plane during the flight. I realize that delays are not always predictable, but I missed my flight in Dubai because we left 90 minutes late from Washington. I will say that Emirates took very good care of me in Dubai. But I would rather not be delayed.

Probably the best flight I’ve ever been on. Emirates first class is leagues beyond British airways and Lufthansa’s.

There was plenty of overhead room but half of the passengers were told they had to check their carryon bags. My partner and I checked in as early as possible and our seats were split across the aisle.

Flew first class so everything was great. But maybe because the flights were red eye, no meals were served, just chips. I flew Alaska Air 1st class at 9PM (2 hour flight) and they served beef short rib sliders!

Awful. Flight was continuously getting delayed and gates kept changing without any reason. Flight was delayed for more then 3 hours

The plane was FREEZING SEATS UNCOMFORTABLE Otherwise smooth Thank you

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.

Seat back monitors and outlets were dead and not working.

The crew, food, and entertainment were all good. But my screen had some sort of bug where if I turned it off, it would turn back on after 2-5 minutes. At full brightness. It made it very hard to get any shut-eye on the overnight flight. Also, the older Boeing plane, while nicely cared for (and no doors fell off 😅👏) doesn't have the nice air quality of newer planes. So I felt a bit greasy by the time we landed in Sweden.

Service was good for such a short flight. Small plane but smooth flight.

Quick and efficient as always. Air France managed to loose and damage my luggage that never made it onto my KLM flight.

The food from Lagos to Amsterdam was was very poor compared to AMS-YYZ

The flight was again delayed for more then 2 hours with some lousy explanation regarding the reason of the delay. Although the flight was delayed for more than 2 hours, no refreshments were offered (according to EU regulations). Last 4 flights on KLM - always at least 2 hrs late. So be prepared that you cannot plan anything with KLM.

The flight was delayed for 2 hrs. Because they didn’t have a crew to fly. And it is not a first time for klm to do that. Last time they cancelled my filght and rebooked me 3 days later. Not reliable airline

We left one hour late because of technical difficulties. The economy comfort seats are great for the price. The crew was mediocre, they do not provide a pleasant experience, they just deliver food and drinks and give orders, not very amicable, no service and hospitality focus.

Booked connecting flights with KlM. My serving flight was the furthest part of the airport. On arrival in Zurich. My two cases arrived but only one carry on belong to my son. His three suitcase didn't arrive. After enquiring we discovered they were still in Amsterdam. We landed at 11.12. We eventually left the airport just after one.

I thought KLM was the best airline but the Lima - Amsterdam was 1 hours late, the Brussels - Amsterdam was 2.30 hours late and the Amsterdam - Lima was 30 minutes late

no issues at all... Kudos to the food. This time was really really good

The food was ok. The crew seemed like they were cranky. I had one guy get mad at me for passing in between the storage area to get to the other toilet. I can understand if it's not allowed but reprimanding me like I'm a student saying "This is the last time!" was not appropriate. During my meal time, there was a French family around me. No problems there but when we usually have meals, they are supposed to put their chair in the upright position. These people did not do it and the steward did not tell them to raise their seat in the upright position. However, I was told to do so! So, me and another person next to me had to eat with the monitor almost touching our faces. Furthermore, a lady in front of me was putting her feet up and preventing another elder passenger from putting her seat back. To make it worse, she was continuously hitting her back into her seat, shaking my monitor while I was watching a movie. A crew member did speak to her about it but then she accused me of pushing her seat forward! The crew member gave me a death stare and told me to stop pushing the seat forward. I did not even touch her seat at all, if I did, she would know it. Her boyfriend also stood up and tried to push her seat even further past the maximum decline to no avail. None of these people were reprimanded but the steward, some bald guy, was extremely friendly with them and did not even try to instruct them to do anything until it was time to land. I resisted the urge to really argue with them because I would have obviously been seen as the aggressor (I have no idea why). I hardly said anything on this flight except "more wine please" and "sorry" if I bumped into someone accidentally. Overall, it was an annoying flight and I had to resist the urge to yell at the steward and the people he was overly friendly with. The happiest moment of this flight was leaving it.

Overall a good experience. We were disappointed when we had to check our carry on due to the plane being full. KLM hadn’t notified us and we had valuable items in the carry on but they still made us check it. Some of the food was great and some was mediocre. Crew is really kind and funny.

Considerations when choosing a drug for malaria prophylaxis (CDC Yellow Book)

Malaria information for India.

Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to  CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .

Measles (Rubeola) - CDC Yellow Book

Dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in India.

Rabies is also present in some terrestrial wildlife species.

If rabies exposures occur while in India, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

Rabies pre-exposure vaccination considerations include whether travelers 1) will be performing occupational or recreational activities that increase risk for exposure to potentially rabid animals and 2) might have difficulty getting prompt access to safe post-exposure prophylaxis.

Please consult with a healthcare provider to determine whether you should receive pre-exposure vaccination before travel.

For more information, see country rabies status assessments .

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in India, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in India. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Some diseases in India—such as dengue, Zika, filariasis, and leishmaniasis—are spread by bugs and cannot be prevented with a vaccine. Follow the insect avoidance measures described above to prevent these and other illnesses.

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in India include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Schistosomiasis and leptospirosis, infections that can be spread in fresh water, are found in India. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call India’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Malaria is a risk in India. Fill your malaria prescription before you leave and take enough with you for the entire length of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some need to be started before you leave.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of India may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in India, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Helpful Resources

The Association for International Road Travel has country-specific Road Travel Reports available for most countries for a minimal fee.

Traffic flows on the left side of the road in India.

  • Always pay close attention to the flow of traffic, especially when crossing the street.
  • LOOK RIGHT for approaching traffic.

For information traffic safety and road conditions in India, see Travel and Transportation on US Department of State's country-specific information for India .

Maintain personal security

Use the same common sense traveling overseas that you would at home, and always stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

Before you leave

  • Research your destination(s), including local laws, customs, and culture.
  • Monitor travel advisories and alerts and read travel tips from the US Department of State.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) .
  • Leave a copy of your itinerary, contact information, credit cards, and passport with someone at home.
  • Pack as light as possible, and leave at home any item you could not replace.

While at your destination(s)

  • Carry contact information for the nearest US embassy or consulate .
  • Carry a photocopy of your passport and entry stamp; leave the actual passport securely in your hotel.
  • Follow all local laws and social customs.
  • Do not wear expensive clothing or jewelry.
  • Always keep hotel doors locked, and store valuables in secure areas.
  • If possible, choose hotel rooms between the 2nd and 6th floors.

To call for emergency services while in India, dial 100 or, from a mobile phone, 112. Write these numbers down to carry with you during your trip.

Learn as much as you can about India before you travel there. A good place to start is the country-specific information on India from the US Department of State.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for India for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

If your doctor prescribed antimalarial medicine for your trip, keep taking the rest of your pills after you return home. If you stop taking your medicine too soon, you could still get sick.

Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. If you become ill with a fever either while traveling in a malaria-risk area or after you return home (for up to 1 year), you should seek immediate medical attention and should tell the doctor about your travel history.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

Helpful Advice for Traveling to the United States

  • Obtain the Necessary Travel Documents: Before traveling to the USA, ensure you have the required travel documents. Most travelers will need a valid passport to enter the country. Depending on your citizenship and the purpose of your visit, you might also need a visa or an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) if you are eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. Check the official websites of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Customs and Border Protection for up-to-date information on entry requirements.
  • Plan Your Itinerary and Research: The USA is a vast country with diverse regions and attractions. Plan your itinerary in advance and research the places you wish to visit. Consider the weather conditions, local customs, and any specific requirements for the areas you plan to explore. This will help you make the most of your trip and ensure you don’t miss out on must-see destinations.
  • Stay Aware of Local Laws and Customs: Familiarize yourself with the local laws and customs of the USA. While the country is generally safe for travelers, it’s essential to be aware of local regulations and follow them. For example, each state might have different rules regarding alcohol consumption, smoking, and traffic laws. Respecting local customs will contribute to a positive travel experience and help you avoid any unnecessary issues.
  • Take Care of Your Personal Safety: Just like in any other destination, it’s important to prioritize your personal safety while traveling in the USA. Be cautious of your surroundings, particularly in crowded tourist areas and major cities. Keep your valuables secure, avoid displaying large amounts of cash, and be mindful of your personal belongings. If you’re unsure about the safety of a particular area, seek advice from locals or reliable sources.
  • Health and Travel Insurance: It’s recommended to have adequate health insurance coverage when traveling to the USA, as healthcare costs can be high. Before your trip, check with your insurance provider to ensure you are adequately covered during your stay. Additionally, consider travel insurance that can protect you in case of trip cancellations, lost baggage, or other unexpected incidents. Review the terms and coverage of any insurance policies you consider to make an informed decision.

Remember, these are general guidelines, and it’s always a good idea to consult official sources and do further research tailored to your specific travel plans. Enjoy your trip to the USA!

What is the Best Time to Visit the United States?

The United States spans a vast geographic area and encompasses diverse climates, so the best time to visit can vary depending on the specific region or city you plan to explore. Here are some general guidelines for different parts of the country:

Spring (April to June) and Fall (September to October): These seasons are generally considered the best times to visit many parts of the United States due to milder temperatures and pleasant weather. It’s a great time to explore destinations like New York City, Washington, D.C., New England, and the national parks of the western states.

Summer (June to August): Summer is a popular time for travel in the United States due to school vacations and warmer weather. It’s a great time to visit coastal destinations, such as California, Florida, and the Northeastern states. National parks, including Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon, are also popular during this season. However, be prepared for larger crowds and higher prices during the peak summer months.

Winter (December to February): Winter is an ideal time to visit destinations that offer winter sports and activities, such as ski resorts in Colorado, Utah, and Vermont. Southern states, like Florida and Arizona, offer mild winter weather and are popular destinations for “snowbirds” seeking warmth. Major cities, like New York City and Chicago, also have festive atmospheres during the holiday season.

It’s important to research the specific regions and cities you plan to visit, as weather conditions can vary significantly within the country. Additionally, consider factors such as major events, festivals, and holidays that may impact your travel plans.

What is Reciprocity?

Nonimmigrant visa applicants from certain countries*/areas of authority may be required to pay a visa issuance fee after their application is approved. These fees are based on the principle of  reciprocity:  when a foreign government imposes fees on U.S. citizens for certain types of visas, the United States will impose a reciprocal fee on citizens of that country*/area of authority for similar types of visas.

How Do I Find Out if I Have to Pay a Reciprocity Fee?

To view the Reciprocity Page for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the list of countries on the left side menu. On the Reciprocity Page, select the Visa Classifications tab from the column on the left

Select the type of visa you have applied for, such as a B-1/B-2 (temporary visa for business or pleasure), F-1 (student visa), etc. from the drop down menu:

The reciprocity information for that country*/area of authority will display:

What does this table tell me?

Visa Classification:  The type of nonimmigrant visa you are applying for.

Fee:  The reciprocity fee, also known as the visa issuance fee, you must pay. This fee is in addition to the nonimmigrant visa application fee (MRV fee).

Number of Entries:  The number of times you may seek entry into the United States with that visa. “M” means multiple times. If there is a number, such as “One”, you may apply for entry one time with that visa.

Validity Period:  This generally means the visa is valid, or can be used, from the date it is issued until the date it expires, for travel with that visa. If your Validity Period is 60 months, your visa will be valid for 60 months from the date it is issued.

What is the Difference between the Reciprocity Fee and the Nonimmigrant Visa Application Fee?

The nonimmigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, is a nonrefundable fee paid by most applicants for U.S. visas, whether the application is approved or refused. It covers the costs associated with processing a U.S. visa application. Current nonimmigrant visa application fees can be found on our  Fees – Visa Services  webpage. (This webpage also lists the few visa categories for which application fees are not required.)

While most visa applicants are required to pay the visa application fee, the Reciprocity Fee is only charged to an approved nonimmigrant visa applicant after the visa interview.

Immigrant Visa Interviews

For Immigrant Visa interviews each U.S. Embassy or Consulate has specific instructions for their applicants. Please click here to select your designated interview location.

Civil Documents and How to Use Them

Immigrant visa applicants are required to submit certain civil documents as part of their visa application, such as birth certificates and police records. (Nonimmigrant visa applicants do not routinely need to submit civil documents as part of their visa application.) Each Reciprocity Page will provide detailed information about how to obtain these civil documents from the country* you have selected, as well as the location of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you can apply for your visa. For more information about civil document requirements for immigrant visa cases, see  civil documents .

To view the Civil Documents for your country* of nationality, select your country*/area of authority from the drop-down menu below. On the Reciprocity Page, click on the tabs on the left to see the categories of Civil Documents and how to obtain them.

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

The US Travel Guide

Checklist for us travel from India

These are some important things in checklist for us travel from india.

Checklist for us travel from India

Other common things in Checklist for us travel from India on h1b

  • All your Passports
  • Flight ticket
  • Degree certificates
  • Original I797 (if any)
  • I129 and LCA (if any)
  • formal cloths
  • Some Indian sweets for friends in US 🙂

Checked in baggage size for USA travel

Total linear dimension(length + height + width) of each checked in baggage should not exceed 62 inches(158 cm). Weight of each checked in baggage should not exceed 23 kg. In my own experience, Most of the airlines are OK with +1 kg extra weight.

Almost all the airlines allow two checked in luggage and one cabin bag and one laptop bag. But to be on the safer side we should always check this while booking airline ticket.

Which flight to book for US travel?

Direct flights to United States of America: If you are a lady and you have kids with you then i would suggest always book direct flights. If you are a lady and coming for the first time to USA then direct flight is the best option. Direct flights sometime costs more but have it’s own advantage. If you are coming from India then you can book air India which fly directly from Delhi and Mumbai to New York, Newark and other cities.

Note: If you are bringing your parents to USA then always book direct flights.

Indirect flights to United States of America: Indirect flights are good for those who come alone. Most of the time indirect flights are cheaper. So, if you want to save some bucks, it is the best choice.

Personally, I like to travel in indirect flight as you can save some bucks. And you can also see one or two place as well. There are lot of indirect flight options.

US currency

Try to keep at least $100 as a cash. You can easily exchange your home country currency into dollars at the airport.

Things to pack in cabin bag

Always remember your checked in baggage may get lost or delayed for some reason. There is no need to panic if lost or get delayed. You will get it after sometime. So, always pack two or three pairs of cloth in cabin bag. And any other useful things like medicine, documents etc..

Always remember to put your charger in hand bag or cabin bag.

Winter cloths for USA

If you are travelling east cost side of USA like new jersey, Washington DC etc. then buy some warm cloths. If you are travelling in winter season then you must buy some good winter cloths.

Travel Insurance For USA

It is always better to take travel insurance if you are visiting to USA. The weather condition is different in USA than India. So, if you are coming for the first time, you may fall sick. Medical expenses are too much in USA. If you don not have insurance than you are gone.

While taking insurance keep these things in mind

  • Your USA travel insurance company’s network or PPO networks should be near to place you are going to visit.
  • Cost which is one of the biggest factor while taking insurance.

Some travel insurance for USA offers plans like comprehensive travel insurance. This type of plan can cover medical emergencies  and can also cover certain type of travel related coverage like baggage loss and travel-related emergencies.

International sim card

It is always better to have a international sim card. You can get it at the airport.

Power adapter

Always carry your power adapter for your electronic gadgets as us power adapter has different voltage.

US Plug adapter or Universal to USA plug adapter

You need this, because your adapter will not work directly with American sockets.

Checklist for us travel from India

USA emergency number

Always remember 911 emergency number. If you are in trouble anywhere in the United States of America. Call 911. Cops are the best here.

The state of tourism and hospitality 2024

Tourism and hospitality are on a journey of disruption. Shifting source markets and destinations, growing demand for experiential and luxury travel, and innovative business strategies are all combining to dramatically alter the industry landscape. Given this momentous change, it’s important for stakeholders to consider and strategize on four major themes:

  • The bulk of travel is close to home. Although international travel might draw headlines, stakeholders shouldn’t neglect the big opportunities in their backyards. Domestic travel still represents the bulk of travel spending, and intraregional tourism is on the rise.
  • Consumers increasingly prioritize travel—when it’s on their own terms. Interest in travel is booming, but travelers are no longer content with a one-size-fits-all experience. Individual personalization might not always be practical, but savvy industry players can use segmentation and hypothesis-driven testing to improve their value propositions. Those that fail to articulate target customer segments and adapt their offerings accordingly risk getting left behind.
  • The face of luxury travel is changing. Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than any other travel segment today—particularly in Asia. It’s crucial to understand that luxury travelers don’t make up a monolith. Segmenting by age, nationality, and net worth can reveal varied and evolving preferences and behaviors.
  • As tourism grows, destinations will need to prepare to mitigate overcrowding. Destinations need to be ready to handle the large tourist flows of tomorrow. Now is the time for stakeholders to plan, develop, and invest in mitigation strategies. Equipped with accurate assessments of carrying capacities and enhanced abilities to gather and analyze data, destinations can improve their transportation and infrastructure, build tourism-ready workforces, and preserve their natural and cultural heritages.

Now boarding: Faces, places, and trends shaping tourism in 2024

Global travel is back and buzzing. The amount of travel fell by 75 percent in 2020; however, travel is on its way to a full recovery by the end of 2024. More regional trips, an emerging population of new travelers, and a fresh set of destinations are powering steady spending in tourism.

There’s no doubt that people still love to travel and will continue to seek new experiences in new places. But where will travelers come from, and where will they go?

We share a snapshot of current traveler flows, along with estimates for growth through 2030.

The way we travel now

Which trends are shaping traveler sentiment now? What sorts of journeys do today’s travelers dream about? How much are they willing to spend on their trips? And what should industry stakeholders do to adapt to the traveler psychology of the moment?

To gauge what’s on the minds of present-day travelers, we surveyed more than 5,000 of them. The findings reveal disparate desires, generational divides, and a newly emerging set of traveler archetypes.

Updating perceptions about today’s luxury traveler

Demand for luxury tourism and hospitality is expected to grow faster than for any other segment. This growth is being powered in part by a large and expanding base of aspiring luxury travelers with net worths between $100,000 and $1 million, many of whom are younger and increasingly willing to spend larger shares of their wealth on upscale travel options. The increase is also a result of rising wealth levels in Asia.

We dug deeper into this ongoing evolution by surveying luxury travelers around the globe about their preferences, plans, and expectations. Some widely held notions about luxury travelers—such as how much money they have, how old they are, and where they come from—could be due for reexamination.

Destination readiness: Preparing for the tourist flows of tomorrow

As global tourism grows, it will be crucial for destinations to be ready. How can the tourism ecosystem prepare to host unprecedented volumes of visitors while managing the challenges that can accompany this success? A large flow of tourists, if not carefully channeled, can encumber infrastructure, harm natural and cultural attractions, and frustrate locals and visitors alike.

Now is the time for tourism stakeholders to combine their thinking and resources to look for better ways to handle the visitor flows of today while properly preparing themselves for the visitor flows of tomorrow. We offer a diagnostic that destinations can use to spot early-warning signs about tourism concentration, along with suggestions for funding mechanisms and strategies to help maximize the benefits of tourism while minimizing its negative impacts.

Six trends shaping new business models in tourism and hospitality

As destinations and source markets have transformed over the past decade, tourism and hospitality companies have evolved, too. Accommodation, home sharing, cruises, and theme parks are among the sectors in which new approaches could present new opportunities. Stakeholders gearing up for new challenges should look for business model innovations that will help sustain their hard-won growth—and profits.

Unbundling offerings, cross-selling distinctive experiences, and embracing data-powered strategies can all be winning moves. A series of insight-driven charts reveal significant trends and an outlook on the future.

Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Learn more about the top cruise insurance plans here .

Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or Travelex, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

Protect your trip: Search, compare and buy the best travel insurance plans for the lowest price. Get a quote .

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.

How To Bring Money From India To USA?

How-to-Move-Money-from-India-to-USA

Last Updated on Jun 4th, 2024 by Neha Sharma, Leave a Comment

Transferring money from India to the USA can be necessary for various reasons, like paying for education, supporting family, or managing business expenses. Understanding the process is crucial to ensure your money reaches its destination safely & legally, without incurring excessive fees.

Legal Requirements

The process is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). One important regulation to know is the Liberalized Remittance Scheme (LRS), which allows Indian residents to send up to USD 250,000 abroad per financial year. To comply with this, you’ll need some essential documents like your PAN card, passport, and a filled Form A2 from your bank.

Best Way To Transfer Money From India To USA

Bank transfer .

Wire Transfer – You can send money directly from your India bank account to a USA bank account. This involves visiting your bank or using online banking. You’ll need the recipient’s bank details & the SWIFT code of their bank. Wire transfers can be a bit pricey & might take a few days.

Online Money Transfer

Popular Services – Companies like Wise (formerly TransferWise), Remitout, Western Union, & Xoom offer easy ways to transfer money online. They often have lower fees & better exchange rates compared to banks.

Comparison – Compare services to find the best deal. Look at fees, exchange rates, & transfer times. Some might charge less but take longer to deliver the money.

Process – Generally, you need to create an account, enter the recipient’s details, & initiate the transfer. It’s user-friendly & can be done from your home.

Currency Exchange Providers

Providers – Companies like Thomas Cook & Forex can help you transfer money abroad.

Process and Fees – Visit their branches or use their online services to initiate a transfer. They charge fees, so it’s wise to compare these with other methods.

Demand Drafts

Usage – A demand draft is like a prepaid cheque that can be used to send money overseas.

Procedure – You get a demand draft issued by your bank and send it to the recipient in the USA, who can then deposit it in their bank account. It’s slower but can be useful in certain situations.

Documents You Will Need For Bringing Money From India To USA

PAN Card – Your Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is a crucial document for financial transactions in India. It’s required for remitting money abroad & for tax purposes.

Passport – Your passport serves as your primary identification document for international transactions. You’ll need it to initiate the transfer and for verification purposes.

Form A2 – This is a form issued by your bank in India. It’s a declaration of the purpose of the remittance & acts as authorization for the bank to transfer the money abroad. You need to fill out this FORM A2 accurately & submit it along with other documents.

KYC Documents – Know Your Customer (KYC) documents are required by banks & financial institutions to verify your identity & address. This can include documents like an Aadhaar card, Voter ID card, or driver’s license.

Proof of Relationship (if applicable) – If you’re transferring money to a family member or for a specific purpose like education, you may need to provide documents to prove your relationship with the recipient or the purpose of the transfer. This could include admission letters for education or marriage certificates.

Tax-related Documents (if applicable) – Depending on the amount being transferred & the source of the funds, you may need to provide tax-related documents such as income tax returns or tax assessment orders.

Factors to Consider

  • Exchange Rates – Exchange rates fluctuate, & they can impact how much money your recipient gets. It’s smart to compare rates & choose the best time for transfer.
  • Transfer Fees – Every method comes with its own set of fees. Be sure to understand all the charges involved, including service fees & conversion fees, to avoid surprises.
  • Transfer Limits – Remember, under the LRS, you can send up to USD 250,000 per financial year.
  • Time Frame – Different methods take different times. Bank transfers might take a few days, while online services can be faster.

Tips For Getting Money From India To USA

  • Plan Ahead – Don’t wait until the last minute. Planning can help you avoid high fees and ensure your money arrives on time.
  • Use Reputable Services – Stick with well-known services to ensure your money is safe and the process is reliable.
  • Track Transfers – Always track your transfer and confirm with the recipient that the money has arrived.
  • Consult with Experts – If you’re sending a large amount, it might be a good idea to talk to a financial advisor or tax professional.
