ABOUT CALYPSO MAUI

The Calypso Maui is ready to take you on exciting ocean excursions. The boat launches from Ma’alaea – the most easily reached, centralized harbor on the island . You can go on the morning Molokini Snorkeling Tour , the Sunset Dinner Cruise , the seasonal Whale Watch , and – for super special occasions — the Private Charter !

This motorized catamaran is built with three decks of fun, and is a wonderful vessel for landlubbers and ocean adventurers alike. The Calypso Maui operates like a spacious, floating amusement park, and her double hulls are built for stability . When the boat is moving forward, the twin hulls cut smartly through the water, leaving most of the craft to float high above the waves, and ride on top of the sea-surface winds. This leads to a comfortable, smooth catamaran snorkeling trip in Maui for you and your group, even when island trade-winds factor in.

The views from Calypso Maui are better than any other boat for miles, because she is the only vessel on the island that has three decks .  As a bonus, you’ll find glass panels on the bottom of the boa t, too!  Two of the cabins are completely covered from the sun, but both ends are open to the sea air. The huge tinted windows along both the port and starboard sides ensure that you always have a good view of the great Pacific beyond the railings.  Year round, it’s good to keep your eyes open for  flying fish , sea turtles, dolphins, false killer whales, and other fantastic marine animals who may be up near the surface. During whale season (mid-December through mid-April), come out to see the 45-ton humpback whales! Once you’ve seen a whale, nothing else can compare.

Our fun, dynamic, and experienced crew is there for you no matter what you need, and safety is paramount. If you come out with us to Molokini Crater, the captain and crew will teach you what you need to know in order to snorkel. Crew members will explain how to use the wide dive steps, two water slides, or the “leap of faith” jump-off point to enter the water, and they will entertain you with little-known facts about the islands that you are gliding past. The crew will also have delicious food and drinks at the ready, along with local insider tips, good humor, and  Aloha .

600+ 5-STAR REVIEWS FROM GUESTS!

We had a large group with small children. The crew was very accommodating and friendly! They made sure we had a spot together on the boat and were comfortable! They had all the right equipment to make snorkeling doable for all skill levels and ages including a viewing board to allow my 2 year old niece to see the ocean bottom. The food was great! The boat was clean and spacious! The family said it was a highlight of the trip! We would definitely do it again!

Great experience! Enjoyed the large boat. The crew were awesome, friendly and professional! The food was delicious! It was two fabulous snorkeling spots!

This trip was amazing. Having a big boat was worth it. Sure there were more people. But when there was a heavy surf we barely noticed. The food for both breakfast and lunch was great!!! Also on the ride back they gave out some little ice creams too! The photographer Marley is amazing at photographing and he has both go pros and nice camera to use in the water. This was 100% worth it.

We took our kids (6 & 11) and we had a blast! The highlight was swimming with a turtle for sure. Every just seeing the cool fish was amazing. The girls loved the slides off the boat and the food was good. Definitely would do it again

An absolute must do. This is an awesome adventure for the price. You get to stop at two locations and even if you only get out and snorkel at one it is way worth it for the cost. Molokini was incredible and clear. The crew on this boat makes everything even better the captain is funny, friendly, gives clear helpful instructions to snorkel newbies like myself and they have everything they can for sea sickness. Truly an amazing time with the Calypso.

Me and my friend got to go on the dinner cruise. The captain was great, the boat was very nice, we loved the live music(Alex is very talented), the crew was good and the food and views were amazing! Thanks for an unforgettable evening aboard the Calypso!

About Kai Kanani

We are a family-owned, 30+ year-old company committed to the quality of your experience in our marine sanctuary. South Maui and the Wailea-Makena area are prized for their beautiful beaches, calm and clear emerald-blue waters, and near perfect weather year round. We gratefully acknowledge our kuleana (responsibility) as caretakers of this South Maui paradise. As a company, we treat each other, our guests and our neighbors with Aloha and respect and we believe that is what keeps Maui such an amazing and beautiful place to visit and to live.

The Kai Kanani II is the only commercial catamaran that lives in South Maui, moored off of Maluaka Beach in Makena. Seven days-a-week, she takes passengers on the short cruise out to Molokini Crater, just 3 miles away, to swim and play in the clearest water in all of Hawaii. Five nights-a-week, the Kai Kanani II raises her sails, taking advantage of our famous afternoon trade winds on our Adventure Sunset Sail. These trips and other special offerings are all crewed by the best group of men and women to grace the blue channels of these islands. Their goal is to create the best memories you’ll take home after your time on Maui.

We feature fresh island foods, all curated by Wailea’s own Spoon & Key Market, a chef-inspired deli and restaurant using ingredients that are locally-sourced and house-cured. Our bar features Maui’s Organic Ocean Vodka, Kula Rum, Fy Gin and wines from MauiWine in Ulupalakua. Kai Kanani’s tours are saturated in local experience and cuisine so that you go away feeling connected and refreshed.

The Beach-Loading Pros

South Maui has a unique beauty unlike anywhere else on the island. For a boat company, there’s one very important feature: there are no boat harbors!

Because of this, Kai Kanani’s passengers “beach-load,” walking through the surf and up on to our gorgeous 65-foot catamaran. Our crew are experts at beach-loading, taking pride in our ability to get everyone of our guests on board as dry and safe as possible for your upcoming tour

For us, it’s part of the adventure! So come prepared to get a little wet while getting on-board. Then sit back and relax while our crew takes care of your every need during your adventure in Maui. Kai Kanani Sailing Charters staff is here to help you and make your adventure on the Kai Kanani II memorable, safe & fun. Let us know if you have any questions or concerns about any part of your excursion with us or any other part of your Maui vacation . We look forward to seeing you out on the water and we’ll see you on-board!

What shoes should you wear? We suggest sandals or flip-flops, shoes that are easily removed as you walk across the beach barefoot. And please bring a towel! Once on board, you’re welcome to wear your sandals or whatever type of shoe you’re comfortable in.

Such a great time. We had so much fun with Capt Anthony, Mikey, Eric, Adam, and Dwight. The food was fabulous. Sounds crazy, but true. Great drinks. Beautiful music. A little slice of paradise in the evening. Highly recommend!

The sunset adventure cruise was fantastic. The captain and crew were welcoming, fun, and informative. Four light courses were served during the cruise and champagne was passed around during sunset. Would recommend for couples or friends looking for a chill evening.

We had an amazing day! We were picked up at our hotel and taken to the beach to meet our catamaran. Then -Crater, fish eel, turtles - breakfast, snack, lunch, ending with cocktails. Service was outstanding! Highly recommend!!!!

A true highlight of our trip to Maui! This tour was wonderful! The crew was beyond friendly & helpful, the snorkeling at the crater & additional stop to swim with sea turtles was truly amazing! The food was fabulous too! Would not hesitate to do this tour again!

Molokini Crater

Molokini Crater is unlike anything you’ve ever seen. As one of only a few partially-submerged volcanic cones of its kind in the world, it offers sights and experiences that you probably didn’t even know you were missing.

We’ve been diving Molokini for 30 years and never grow tired of its clear blue water and incredible sea life. Come see why many consider Molokini the best snorkeling Maui has to offer.

Olowalu is one of the most amazing spots to explore marine life among all the Hawaiian Islands. Enjoy crystal-clear blue waters, a decorated coastline, impressive coral reef formations, and an abundance of Hawaiian ocean marine life.

Venture through calm waters with your family and friends, enjoying all the beauty of the Pacific. Be an eye witness to a myriad of tropical fish, colorful seabeds, the Hawaiian green sea turtle, and more. Olowalu is an adventure worth seeking; a perfect ocean activity from beginner to novice.

Turtle Town

Turtle Town is considered one of the best Maui diving locations, offering a rare glimpse into the world of the Hawaiian green sea turtle. These gentle creatures have been honored and loved by Hawaiians for centuries and you’ll be given the chance to share their home with them as you snorkel Turtle Town.

This is an opportunity that few people will ever have and will likely be one of your most memorable experiences in Maui. Snorkel with and closely observe the Hawaiian green sea turtles in their natural habitat.

Coral Gardens

Coral Gardens is on the West Side of Maui and best reached by boat, explore one of the most unique and protected bays in Hawaii. Home to a host of tropical fish, Octopus, Eels, and the Hawaiian green sea turtles, Coral Gardens does not disappoint.

The natural reef formations are incredibly beautiful, vibrant in color, and bustling with ocean marine life. The clear and shallow waters reflect gorgeous Hawaiian sunlight, making for amazing visibility, and ideal conditions for snorkeling in Maui.

No other vessel on Maui offers as much. 360-degree panoramic viewing, warm showers, and a super water slide are a few of the amenities.

Pride of Maui is the largest and most stable catamaran on Maui. Her sprawling deck boasts unobstructed panoramic views.

The last two years presented many challenges and learning opportunities. Everyone was forced to slow down, revisit priorities and take stock of what’s important.

We made significant operational changes with a limited guest capacity of 50%. We were afforded the opportunity to improve our onboard amenities and refine the guest experience. We’ve listened to our guests and our repeat Ohana, who welcome the limited capacity and appreciate the upgraded service.

So glad our family did this! We swam along with schools of beautiful fish and the majestic turtles. The turtles were absolutely incredible to watch in their natural habitat!! The gear was quality and the crew totally made the experience! Relaxing and floating was so amazingly peaceful. One of the lesser expensive excursions, and ended up being one of the best highlights for our family of 4, with two teens!

a drawing of a cartoon character

We have been in Maui for 2 weeks, and this was by far my favorite excursion, and the cheapest too! The crew was so awesome! I felt safe because they come in water with you. We saw so many turtles and sharks (reef sharks but I’d say 4ft long). The drinks were yummy (mai tai)! After snorkeling, we jumped off the boat and we did the slide as well. My kids are 12 & 17….they had a great time. I HIGHLY recommend this trip!

We booked a sunset cruise to celebrate our daughter's birthday and it was everything we wanted and more! The captain and crew were phenomenal and went above and beyond to give us a first class experience. Food was great, drinks were flowing, and the live music was the icing on the cake. The captain let our daughter sit behind the wheel for a little bit which was a special experience for her. We did several tours while in Maui, but this was by far the best!

a close up of a knife

My husband and I had so much fun! Our experience was top notch and the staff are so nice and friendly, felt super safe the entire time. The life guards watch the entire time to make sure everyone is having a great time while staying close and being safe. We saw so many turtles and beautiful fish, at the end of the tour we encountered a lot of dolphins and it really felt so magical. 100% recommend, it was definitely my favorite part of our vacation!

icon

We had a fantastic time yesterday seeing three kinds of dolphins! Captain Heather just knew how to find them. She was so informed and humorous. Snorkeling off the boat in Lanai Bay was so amazing. Great visibility and tons of fish. We staying in the water for the full hour and never tired. Afterwards the party started when the bar opened. Very soon after, everyone on the boat was friends. Drinks were excellent and plentiful. Highly recommend, it was fantastic!

Started calling , when they opened at 7:00 am there time, left message and phone number , no call back 6 hours later. Got on their web site at 10:30am their time still no answer to my 1 question. My advice don't waist your time with this company! No star rating. They are useless!!!! TAKE YOUR BUSINESS SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Great Experience! Loved the atmosphere on this smaller snorkel boat. Highly skilled crew that made the whole experience really enjoyable. - Nate, Zac, and Caty. Snorkeled in 2 spots and saw all kinds of fish and sea turtles! Light breakfast and lunch included along with open bar on the way back to the harbor made for a great day out on the water. Highly recommend as a must do on Maui.

5 stars! Went out today with Captain CJ, Nate, and Lindsey and had the most incredible trip. Weather was awesome, saw over 50 mother whales and their calf's and had a great snorkel dive at Molokini and Turtle town where we actually saw turtles and a small shark. Incredible hospitality by the staff and well worth the price. Lunch was great with pulled pork sandwiches or giant hotdogs and the open bar on the way home is a great way to finish the day. Highly suggest taking a fun trip on the Leilani. Smaller boat with less passengers then some of the others. Great boat, great crew! Aloha.

My husband and I joined the Leilani for a snorkel trip and had a mixed reaction to it. The good: the price was a great value, the crew was friendly and caring, the smaller sized group was better (in our opinion) than some of the larger vessels, there were no kids or heavy drinkers (big plus for us but don't know if that's always the case), and we did in fact see some beautiful turtles, coral reefs, and fish. Food, beverages, and sunscreen provided were very nice, as well! The bad: if you are a man with any facial hair the snorkel mask will leak and be a nuisance during your time in the water (they have no alternatives and this is an ongoing problem for them), we couldn't make it to Molokini because of high winds (not their fault) and the second of the two places they took us to as an alternative was very lacking in sea life (that was a disappointment but again, not entirely their fault), they charge $10 bucks per wetsuit top which drained our cash for tip, and the smaller size vessel was more susceptible to rocking and made several people on board very ill. This rating is mostly based on an overall feeling we had from the trip and not necessarily the fault of the crew, but management needs to get on board with other options for men with facial hair (over 50% of the guys on board) for sure and also give a heads up about cash payments for the wetsuit tops so the crew doesn't lose tip money.

Best snorkeling trip on the Leilani! Corky helped us make our reservations the day before the trip and was so kind and accommodating. I knew I was speaking with a person who truly cared about our time and experience. Our crew was so amazing from the time we arrived in the harbor until the time we left. The captain took us to Turtle Town first to avoid all the other boats going to Molokini, which was the best idea. The water wasn't crowded with other snorkelers and it just again proved that we were with people who truly cared about our experience. The entire trip was relaxed and fun thanks to our amazing crew. Lunch was the most delicious pulled pork sandwiches, pineapple cole slaw, pasta salad, and veggies. No cheap sandwiches here. And the open bar was well enjoyed on the way back to the harbor. If you're going to book a snorkeling tour, this is THE ONE!

Photo of James D.

Overall, very disappointing trip aboard the Leilani boat. Little to no value in the price paid. For what was paid for, we didn't get much of a trip. Trip was supposed to go to two spots. We only did one. The spot we went was molokini crater. When we got there, there was probably 15 other boats. This spot was crowded. Too crowded for a relaxing snorkel trip. Crew told us the weather was not gonna permit us to go to the other spot for snorkeling. However there is no "turtle town" spot. The crew said it is a local made up term that they use to advertise. Sounds like BS advertising. Basically anywhere they say could be turtle town to outsiders. We didn't see much wildlife and no turtles. We bought our own gear to have some upgraded gear however the crew said we couldn't use them because it was a liability to them. Emails said nothing about not being able to bring your own gear. Only until we got to the snorkeling spot did they say we couldn't use them. What a joke. Would have been happier leaving them in the car. Breakfast and lunch were a joke. Super small meals. Not a lot of items to eat. But I get it. The boat is small. They served alcohol however only after snorkeling was done. Had high expectations however everything about the trip was a waste. Overall this would have been a skip if the reviews for the booking site were legit. Skip this company.

Aloha, James! We appreciate you taking the time to review us, and are happy to hear you were able to visit Molokini, one of the top snorkeling destinations in the world. Since Molokini is such a sought out location, summertime can get crowded. We still carry less on our boat than most, making the trip more intimate. Molokini is home to a variety of fish, including butterflyfish, colorful wrasses, tangs, eels! They are wild, so we can't guarantee their sightings, but they are there! There is a location called Turtle Town that we do not just say for advertising purposes, but we will address this comment with our crew. You can google, it is a real location, and we do frequent this location on both of our boats. We are not legally allowed to serve alcohol in the crater or the harbor, but the second we can open the bar we do. We also do not charge for drinks, it is included, where other boats do. We appreciate you taking the time to review, us, and hope the rest of your time on Maui was fantastic. Mahalo! -Lawrence S PR COORDINATOR

This was an absolutely horrible experience. The weather conditions were terrible and still they proceeded to do the tour. The boat is too small and it was bobbing terribly. People were getting sick, some needed oxygen and children were crying. Yet, the crew pretended all was good as they blasted their music as loud as they could while ignoring the dangers at hand. I witnessed a young girl fall down the stairs and nearly fly off the boat, and watch a very large gentleman crash and roll all over the deck. I believe he bled. I watched a woman throwing up in the water while the crew member insist she stay in the water because they didn't want her vomiting in the boat. Snorkeling conditions were horrific.. people were being pushed into rocks by the extremely choppy waters. So dangerous and there were small children in the over crowded little patch of sea they allowed the passengers to swim in. I can't help but believe that this was all about the money and they wanted to get paid for the trip no matter what. Reckless and irresponsible. I never got the feeling that the passengers were in good hands. Don't waste your money and time on this tour. So many better ones out there!!!

Photo of Marie D.

We just got back from our snorkel trip on the Leilani. It was a great experience. We were lucky with the winds being slightly calmer and made it to Molokini. Snorkeling was awesome.Turtle Town was fun too. They served a continental breakfast with fruit and muffins. Lunch was pulled pork and hotdogs with cole slaw and pasta salad, and yes a tasty cookie. The crew was generated, entertaining and made sure we were safe in the water. Smaller boat, but not crowded. Overall, just perfect!

Photo of Aaron N.

Went with a group of 5 and it was a blast. We saw over 15 whales (probably closer to 20) throughout the tour. The two snorkeling spot we went to were great. The water was very clear and we saw 3 turtles that we got to swim with as well as other fish. The crew (John, Nate, Jesse) were awesome. They were helpful and very knowledgeable. We brought our own snorkel gear so I cannot review that. Food was good. The lunch was better than the breakfast. I would definitely book again.

Mar 28, 2019

Aloha, Aaron! Wow, it sounds like you had a whale of a time! (pun intended!) We appreciate the 5-stars and kind words about the trip and crew. We are lucky to have people like John, Nate, and Jesse on our team! We do hope you will join us again next time you're on Maui. Enjoy the rest of your vacation! Mahalo! -Lawrence S. PR COORDINATOR

Been on a few different boats to Molokini, some newer and bigger.....but this was by far the best. Captain C.J. and his crew Sierra and Nate were incredible, very good at their jobs but even better just being three cool people. The skipper will keep you entertained as well as James Corden could throughout the cruise. Sierra will watch out for you like a mother watching her children, while Nate runs everywhere on the boat and then cooks you a welcome lunch. Great job providing us with a great time!

Jun 24, 2019

Aloha! Thank you for taking the time to review us and share your experience with others! We are lucky to have crew members like Sierra, Nate and Captain CJ, who not only love their jobs but take a lot of pride in providing the best customer service! They are truly the backbone of what we do! We hope the rest of your time on Maui was fantastic and you’ll join us again next time you’re on the island. Mahalo! -Lawrence S PR COORDINATOR

Maui Ocean Riders

Maui Ocean Riders

End of an era.

It is with a sad heart to announce that we will no longer be in operation. After months of consideration, research and realization I have decided that the investment required to put Ocean Riders back together is just too great. It takes a special boat to handle the conditions we encounter circumnavigating Lana'i. To all of you that have experienced the "exciting" channel crossings and the trek down the north shore passing the shipwrecks you know what I'm talking about :) There are many other factors besides just replacing the vessel that have contributed to the decision such as storage, equipment replacement and catering, to name a few. I feel fortunate to have even had the opportunity to do this as a 'job' for the past 16 years and consider it an honor to be a part of the Ocean Riders' legacy that started back in 1988. Thank you to everyone that ever stepped foot on the boat with me. I will never forget all the great times and amazing people that I got to spend my days with on the water. Mahalo Nui Loa, Captain Chad P.S. Bogey misses the boat but is doing just fine ;)

Hang on tight for a Hawaii boat tour trip you will never forget!

The Original Lanai Tour Established in 1988 Testimonials

We went on this trip 3 or 4 years ago and enjoyed it so much that we did it again, but this time brought more friends and family. There are aspects of the tour that were exactly the same as the first time but my favorite part of this tour is that it changes up based upon conditions, etc. This tour is an adventure for sure and will be a consistent stop on any trip to Maui. Crew is friendly and informative. A must do!

Amazing day! I highly recommend taking this tour when in Maui. The crew was fantastic! The sights are amazing, boat ride was a lot of fun, snorkeling off the coast of Lanai was incredible!

Absolutely top notch experience with Ocean Riders today. Really enjoyed the small group experience and great snorkel locations, the circumnavigation of Lanai, Captain Chad and ocean dog Bogie, great food and overall fun experience. Highly recommend booking a tour with them.

Captain Chad is very knowledgeable and skilled. Storm swells made the journey from Maui to Lanai a little more adventurous - but we knew we were in good hands as Chad did a great job navigating. We took the tour circumnavigating Lanai and loved the snorkeling spots. Beautiful scenery, breaks spaced out between rising, snorkeling, lunch. Definitely recommend.

10 Best Cruises to Hawaii — From Luxury Sailings to Expedition Ships

A cruise around the 50th state is an excellent way to see as much of the islands as possible in a limited amount of time.

boat trips maui

Courtesy of Viking Cruises

The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the 50th state's "Aloha" spirit. Each island offers a different climate, landscape, and style, and even on the same island, there are significant variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kailua-Kona region on the west coast tends to be much drier.

Visitors to Hawaii, especially first-timers, want to experience as much of the islands as possible, and a cruise is a great way to accomplish that, according to Pam Jacobs , travel advisor at Travel Store in Palos Verdes Estates, California. “People love the inter-island cruises because all meals are included, so it’s an economical as well as convenient way to see the islands. You unpack once and avoid getting in and out of airports and checking in and out of hotels. It’s the best way to island hop.”

Families and travelers with limited time enjoy the seven-day Norwegian Cruise Lines Honolulu to Honolulu round trip cruises, while retirees may opt for a longer cruise from the West Coast with more days at sea. You can embark from several ports on the West Coast, including San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Seattle. “Many Hawaiʻi cruises are part of longer voyages to the South Pacific, Australia, or around the world,” says Jacobs, a cruise and train travel specialist.

“The shore excursions on the cruises are the same things a tourist would do on land — go to a luau, play golf, visit an attraction like the Arizona Memorial, or just relax on the beach — and it’s all arranged for you,” according to Jacobs. One more bit of advice from our cruise expert: “Always arrive a day before your cruise to be sure you’re there and ready. You’ll have time to explore and relax before boarding.”

Below are some of the best cruises to see Hawaiʻi . Dates, prices, amenities, and itineraries vary, so choosing a cruise requires some planning and research. That's always part of the fun, so hopefully this list will inspire you to get started.
