Motoscafisti Capri, Italy - skippers since 1955

For more than half a century, Motoscafisti di Capri has been the number 1 choice for boat excursions around the Island of Capri.

The Blue Grotto, the Faraglioni, the lighthouse: no trip to Capri, Italy can be considered complete without having first sailed around the island. The best and safest way to enjoy a trip on the sea surrounding Capri is to sail with the island's leading boat company, the oldest and most experienced in the business: the Motoscafisti di Capri!

Ferrying services

We are the only company on Capri authorized to provide ferrying services.

Since 1955, we have been transporting passengers, luggage, and merchandise to and from ships anchored within the port area of Capri. An exclusive ferrying service which testifies to our professionalism and guarantees the safety of all passengers.

A tale of the sea

In 1826, a fisherman from Marina Grande accompanied the German painter August Kopisch to the Blue Grotto, which, at the time, was known only to the islanders. From that moment on, news of the extraordinary beauty of the sea cave began to spread around the world and more and more visitors coming to Capri asked to see the Blue Grotto and sail around the island by boat.

In 1955, the fishermen of Capri who organized these trips decided to found a company, which would enable them to offer a truly professional service to customers. Thus Motoscafisti di Capri was born.

Our skippers

All our skippers speak English; many speak French and Spanish, as well. They are all native to Capri, and are available for anything you may need during your sail.

Our boats are insured to cover damages to people, property, and animals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blue grotto, does the ticket include entrance to the blue grotto.

No, even though some boat companies state the contrary, you will have to pay to enter the Blue Grotto separately, at the entrance to the cave. The Blue Grotto is a state-owned cultural property.

When is the Blue Grotto open to the public?

The Blue Grotto is open from 09.00 to 17.00, sea and general weather conditions permitting. Visitors enter the Grotto via a 1 meter high cavity: in rough or high seas, it is impossible to access the cave.

Is the Blue Grotto open in the winter?

Yes, when sea conditions are favorable, the Grotto is open in winter too.

Can you swim inside the Blue Grotto?

During the day, the steady procession of boats going in and out of the cave makes swimming impossible. When the Blue Grotto is closed, entry is prohibited.

How long does the trip to the Blue Grotto take?

The journey from Marina Grande, the visit to the cave, and return, will take about an hour.

Trip around the island

How long does the trip around the island take.

The trip all the way around the island takes about 2 hours and includes the stop at the Blue Grotto.

Is the visit of the Blue Grotto obligatory?

The boat will stop to allow those who want to visit the sea cave to do so. If you don't want to go inside the Grotto, you are welcome to stay on board!

No, you will have to pay to see the Grotto at the entrance of the cave (see response to question above).

Do you offer other trips too?

Yes, we also organize trips sailing around the Faraglioni, departing from Marina Grande and arriving at the Siren's rock, where you can take a photo of the sea with the Faraglioni in the background.

Do you offer discounted rates for groups?

Yes, contact us for a quote.

Private excursions

Do you rent boats without crew.

No, we only rent boats manned by a skipper.

Is it possible to fish from the boat?

Yes, but we'll need to know beforehand so that we can reserve the right type of craft. If you want to organize a fishing trip, let us know in advance!

Can I take a shower on the boat?

Yes, all of the boats used for private excursions are equipped with soft water shower.

I'm in Capri but I haven't got any of the things I need for a day at sea, can you help?

No problem, on request we will get you anything and everything you need: swimming costumes, beach towels, face masks and flippers etc...

Do you have children's life jackets?

Of course: all our boats are equipped with life jackets for both adults and children. In addition, all our passengers are covered by our company insurance.

Transfers and charters

Do you do night-time transfers.

Yes, we are often asked to provide nocturnal transportation for customers going to a party, discotheque, or attending an important evening event. The time you go and the time you come back are entirely up to you!

I need to organize a transfer for more than 150 people. Is that possible?

For groups which exceed 150 passengers, we can organize a transfer using more than one boat. We often provide such a service for wedding parties, when the bride and groom travel on their own private boat and their guests sail on boats behind them, forming a floating procession.

Is there room on your boats for large suitcases?

Yes, when you book your transfer let us know just how many suitcases you intend to bring and we will book a suitable boat for you.

You’ll visit the famous caves that surround the island, including the exclusive Blue Grotto, and will have plenty of time to stroll around Capri and enjoy a leisurely lunch. From the boat, you can also enjoy snorkeling, swimming, and plenty of on-board refreshments.

Morning Pickup From Your Hotel

No need to worry about finding a taxi today, as our driver is on hand to pick you up at your Sorrento hotel and take you straight to the port, where your boat will be waiting. After booking, please get in touch to let us know where you're staying.

Cruise to Capri

Sit back and relax as the boat cruises along the coast of the Bay of Naples. As Sorrento disappears from view, you'll approach the eye-catching island of Capri—known as one of Italy's most luxurious destinations.

One of your first views will be the ruins of Tiberius' Imperial Palace. The second emperor in Roman history lived in Capri during the tumultuous days of his reign. Your tour leader will tell the story of how the Roman Empire almost collapsed just a few years into Tiberius' rule.

You'll continue to Marina Grande, the main fishing village of the island, where tiny fishing boats and bright houses give off the warm local energy that made Capri famous. You'll be returning to Capri later on to explore at your own pace, and your local crew will have plenty of recommendations to offer.

The Blue Grotto and Capri's Famous Caves

One of the highlights of Capri is the abundance of beautiful natural caves along the coast, locally known as "grottoes."

The exclusive Blue Grotto is a true world wonder. With natural light shining through at the perfect angle, the reflection onto the pure blue waters illuminates the entire cave in a stunning hue of royal blue.

Tourist numbers are tightly controlled here, so tickets are required to hop on one of the approved rowboats that enter the Blue Grotto. Just make sure to bring the €14 entry fee in cash for each person in your group and enjoy a dazzling ride through this one-of-a-kind cultural site.

Later in the afternoon, as you sail around the island, you'll stop to visit the Marvelous Grotto, White Grotto, and Green Grotto.

Explore the Island of Capri

Arriving in Marina Grande, your boat will dock in the marina and you'll have a 4 to 5 hours to take in this charming little island at your own pace. Your crew will be happy to tell you where to get the best past, pizza and seafood for lunch, and you can stroll through the cobblestone streets to your heart's content.

You may decide to take the funicular (tram) through the lemon groves to Capri Town, where you'll find most of the designer shops, or you can simply take a walk and find one on the many incredible viewpoints on the island. After a few hours of free time, head back onto the boat for the final stretch of your day at sea.

A Day of Swimming, Snorkeling, and Relaxation

Throughout the afternoon, there will be plenty of chances to jump in the warm Mediterranean waters for a dip, or you can choose to snorkel and explore the reefs and caves. (Bring your own snorkel gear or purchase onsite.) With beer, wine, and soft drinks included on board, enjoy a relaxing cruise in one of the world's most beautiful settings.

Upon returning to Sorrento, our driver will be ready to take you back to your hotel after a full day of exploring Capri. Ciao!

We had the best time on this tour with Fredricko and Angelo! They were knowledgeable, funny and made our experience one to remember! A must do when going to Capri.

Great boat tour and guides

Our trip was the boat tour to Capri with a stop to Blue Grotto. Boat staff were great! They helped us secure a van to Anacapri. They go beyond what is in the itinerary which was fun. They also helped us secure a better boat for blue grotto at 28 euro per person instead of the original boat that wanted 43 euro person. The grotto is a brutal business so ask your skipper if they help you hustle a fair price at the grotto. The views were amazing. They took us to amazing scenic spots for viewing and swimming (e.g. love tunnel and waterfall). We went on other boat tours so we can say our boat for this tour was well stocked and generous ;-) we tipped well after an amazing day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to bring?

Bring a swimsuit and sunscreen. For the Blue Grotto, bring some cash to tip the dedicated skipper (not your day skipper) who will lead you into the cave.

Is lunch included with this tour?

A full lunch isn't included with this tour, although plenty of snacks and drinks will be available while you're on the boat. At lunchtime, you'll be exploring Capri island independently, but the crew will be more than happy to tell you about some great local lunch spots!

What if I have concerns about my mobility?

You'll need to be able to get on and off a boat, of course, but all swimming and snorkeling activities are entirely optional. Your time on Capri island is free, so you can decide for yourself what itinerary is manageable.

Do I have to pay to enter the Blue Grotto?

Since access to the Blue Grotto is limited, tickets must be purchased in cash at the departure point for the Blue Grotto. Please bring €14 in cash for each person in your group if you would like to be guided into this exclusive cave.

Do I have to bring my own snorkeling gear?

For hygiene reasons, snorkeling equipment is no longer shared among customers. You are welcome to bring your own snorkeling gear or purchase it at the office before you depart for Capri (€20 for snorkel and mask).

Will I be picked up at my start time?

Prior to your tour, you'll receive a notification of when to expect to be picked up, if your hotel is in the approved pickup areas. This often starts up to an hour before the official start time so that you have as much time as possible to enjoy the day in Capri.

Is this tour run by The Tour Guy?

No, but it's run by one of our trusted and vetted partners in Sorrento.

Are the any additional fees to pay?

Yes. Please bring €5 per person for onsite docking fees.

How much time will we have in Capri?

You'll have between 4 and 5 hours to enjoy exploring the island, shopping, and eating lunch.

Magical Capri

Boat tour of capri, italy.

How many times will you visit Capri in your lifetime? I hope to see you over and over again, but know that often a visit to Capri is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. So I always recommend visitors to Capri make the most of their stay and enjoy their time on the island to the fullest .

A private boat tour around the Island of Capri is the perfect way to discover the island at a relaxed pace, far from the noise and crush of the tourist crowds. I or one of my selected skippers will sail you around the coast and help you discover our island home . You will spend your time on the water relaxing on the sun deck, with cushions, beach towels, and cool drinks keeping you comfortable while we sail along the dramatic coast of Capri, Italy.

Boat Tour of the Island of Capri 3 hours

To sail the entire circumference of Capri, it takes little more than an hour, but my tours spend at least 3 hours on the water.

I believe that a sail around the Island of Capri is best done at a relaxed pace , stopping often to take dips in the crystalline waters and to enjoy the breathtaking views of the coast.

Boat Tour of the Island of Capri 4 hours

This boat tour of Capri aboard a private "gozzo" boat for four hours is the best option for those who want to discover Capri by sea at the perfect pace, with stops for leisurely swims in the most pristine coves and enjoy cool drinks while admiring the unforgettable scenery . Perhaps order “Mamma Rita’s” picnic lunch on-board to make this hard day tour complete.

During our tour, we can stop for a visit at the Blue Grotto, sail into other, lesser known but equally beautiful sea caves, and take endless snapshots against the background of the Faraglioni sea stacks .

Full Day Island Tour

If you are staying on the island for more than just a few days, I strongly recommend a full day at sea , especially between June and September!

Here's how we begin our day at sea on Capri: you wake at a leisurely hour and make your way to Marina Grande's "Bar Gabbiano" (our meeting place for passengers), where you could enjoy a cappuccino and pastry for breakfast before our departure to explore the island.

Once we have rounded Tiberius' Leap , we'll stop to visit the Grotta Bianca and have a nice long swim beneath the Faraglioni rock formations.

By this time, you'll be ready for lunch! I can take you to one of the most picturesque waterfront restaurants along the coast of Capri, including the La Fontelina beach club with a view of the Faraglioni, Torre Saracena in Marina Piccola, or Il Ricco , the gourmet restaurant at the Capri Palace Hotel near the Blue Grotto.

After your seafood lunch on the water, washed down with a bottle of cool white wine (perhaps with slices of peach floating in your glass, a tradition in Capri), a short nap on board rocked by the waves is exactly what you'll need!

In the afternoon, we'll sail along the southern coast of the island, the warmest and sunniest stretch of coastline, stopping in late afternoon for a visit to the Blue Grotto after the crush of day-trippers has left.

Doesn't that sound like the perfect day at sea?

Sunset Sail

This is my most romantic tour , which I always suggest when clients are looking for an unforgettably romantic surprise for their sweetheart...perhaps to pop the question!

We depart from Marina Grande a little before sunset to sail along the coast as it is flooded with the warm, golden rays of late afternoon. We stop at the foot of the Faraglioni sea stacks for a glass of wine or champagne and snacks, where we anchor until the last rays of sun disappear over the Mediterranean.

Dinner in Nerano

Sailing by moonlight is simply magical! Everyone should sail beneath a canopy of stars at least once in their lifetime...

On a balmy summer night, common during the warmest months on Capri, with calm seas, a full moon lighting a path along the waves, and the twinkling lights along the Gulf of Naples in the distance... . Simply magical!

For those who want to experience this magic, I suggest a moonlight sail to Nerano from Capri.

We leave at sunset from Marina Grande to head to Nerano, where you can stop for dinner at the Conca del Sogno , a romantic restaurant tucked in a tiny cove only accessible by boat. We'll sail back to Capri after your meal, with precious memories of your evening to be savored for years to come!

This spot is much quieter than Marina Grande, where both the commercial port and marina are located. A black-and-white photograph shows a rock formation on a rugged coastline resembling the head of an elephant with its trunk in the water.

So Close to Sicily, So Far From the Crowds

Pantelleria is a seductive idyll of mud baths, romantic ruins and secluded swimming coves. It’s also rocky and wind-whipped, making it quieter than its big-sister island next door.

For years I had been hearing about the island of Pantelleria, the craggy, hard-to-get-to Eden with middle-of-nowhere tranquillity that sits 89 miles southwest of the island of Sicily and about 50 miles east of Tunisia. Luca Guadagnino’s 2015 film “ A Bigger Splash ” painted a seductive idyll of mud baths, romantic ruins and secluded swimming coves. Celebrities like Madonna, Sting and Julia Roberts visited, drawn to the striking, Africa-meets-Italy ambience, along with Giorgio Armani, a part-time resident since 1980. The fact that nobody was impressed by them added to the allure.

“We always tell newbies that you will either love it or hate it,” said the fashion stylist Sciascia Gambaccini, who has owned a vacation home on the island for 33 years. “This is not Capri. We don’t have Chanel. There aren’t fancy resort hotels. There is constant wind. The beauty is in the slow pace and the wild landscape.”

In a black-and-white photograph, the intersection of two narrow stone streets is shown, with a bell tower in the distance.

The absence of white-sand beaches is worn like a badge of honor. Locals schlep their own gear to the jagged lava rock perches that line the coast and cannonball into the turquoise sea. The old-fashioned pasticceria and dingy olive stalls in Pantelleria Town, bestow it with “Godfather”-like charm.

And the wind, well, it’s part of the package. As locals will tell you, nature is in charge here, and when a sirocco hits, you have to go with the flow.

A fragrant, otherworldly landscape

Thousands of years ago, farmers on rocky, wind-whipped, fresh-water-free Pantelleria figured out how to cultivate crops.

They built terraced walls from porous lava rock that blocked the wind and irrigated the fruits and vegetables with dew. These steep terraces undulate throughout the island, lending a primordial texture to the bluffs of lava rock. Ubiquitous lava stone dwellings called dammusi also lend to the otherworldly landscape.

Pantelleria’s topography completely shifts as you move from one part of the 32-square-mile island to another. As I zipped along the narrow main road and unpaved side routes, the scenery moved from lush caldera-formed valleys to barren plateaus tufted in Mediterranean scrub to hilltop villages festooned in pink bougainvillea, and up to woodsy mountains. Flowering cactuses and caper bushes with purple stamens grow with abandon, as do herbs. When the wind blows, it smells of wild oregano.

Reminders of Pantelleria’s ancient roots are everywhere.

In Mursia, the bar Sesiventi overlooks Bronze Age burial monuments. In Nikà, I thought of the Romans as I plopped into the burbling thermal baths that they carved into the stone. Pantelleria Town is dominated by a castle begun in the Byzantine era, Norman additions and a bell tower built later by the Spanish.

That Pantescan vibe

The island is not easy to reach. The Danish airline DAT , the Spanish carrier Volotea and the Italian ITA Airways fly there from within Italy, but only on certain days. After the high season, which runs from the end of May through the end of September, it becomes more challenging with one-off flights or an overnight ferry option from Trapani on the main island of Sicily. (Pantelleria is part of the region of Sicily.)

I flew from Palermo last June, and after the jolt of landing on a volcanic speck in the sea, I felt the siren song of slackerdom. It was hot. And the wind/cicadas combo was like an island lullaby. My late-afternoon arrival coincided with aperitivo hour, which has its own format in Pantelleria. People climb to the roofs and sit on pillows to watch the sun slip into the sea. I experienced this tranquil rooftop scene, or anti-scene, at different restaurants, hotels and homes throughout my week on the island.

Of note, there was no blaring music. Nature was the main event, and it was treated with reverence. Tesla? Mercedes? Land Rover? Not a chance. Everyone drives beat-up cars, the Fiat Panda being the most popular. When a friend picked me up in this toylike contraption, I learned why. Their tiny size and light weight make it simple to wedge into tight parking spots and navigate oncoming traffic on single-lane roads, a maneuver that often involves pulling over into bushes or onto a narrow precipice.

While there may not be beach days, there are certainly swim days that unfold upon lava outcroppings. Balata dei Turchi was my favorite, partly because it was such an adventure to get to this bay beneath approximately 800-foot lava cliffs. It involved negotiating steep, unpaved terrain in my friend’s decrepit Panda, bouncing over boulders as plumes of dust clouded the windshield. After parking, it was a 10-minute descent down the rocks on foot. We placed towels on the black rocks and plunged into the sea. A thick rope affixed to the rocks helped swimmers pull themselves back up.

Some days, the swim was spontaneous. After a wine-soused lunch at La Vela in the Scauri port, I ditched my clothes (I learned to tuck a swimsuit into my tote) and waded past sea urchins into the crystal clear sea. Around me, sunbathers were reading (real books) and children snorkeled and played (real) games. It felt like 1985.

A boat tour offers the best perspective of the island. But with the wind, one had been tricky to schedule. Finally, the gusts receded, and I set out with a lithe, Speedo-clad skipper to explore the lava-formed grottoes accessible only by sea. We motored into the Grotta delle Sirene and then Sataria , the sponge-encrusted grotto where legend has it that Odysseus was bewitched by the sea nymph Calypso. We got up close to Arco dell’Elefante , a lava arch that resembles an elephant drinking water. Then we anchored in front of the caves of Punta Spadillo for a panini lunch before diving into the green-blue, parrotfish-rich sea. We saw one only other boat, which departed as we arrived.

Vino e capperi

If people know Pantelleria, chances are they will mention its two most famous exports: passito, a sweet wine made with the zibibbo grape, and capers. It is no easy feat to produce wine on an arid, fresh-water-free island. Vines were trained to grow horizontally to avoid the wind. To self-irrigate, they were planted in hollows so dew could drip into the roots at night. This centuries-old practice is recognized by UNESCO as an “intangible cultural heritage.”

All of the island’s 22 winemakers produce their own version of amber-hued passito, and each winemaker speaks poetically of how harsh conditions yield this “vino da meditazione,” or meditation wine, to be sipped slowly after dinner. “When you drink it, you can feel the people and land behind the flavor,” said Antonio Rallo, the fifth-generation co-owner of Donnafugata vineyards and president of the Sicilia DOC wine consortium. “It could never be made anywhere else besides this island.”

Sun, wind and mineral-rich volcanic soil are also the secret to Pantelleria’s capers, whose exceptional sweetness makes them prized throughout the gastronomic world. As most vineyards grow grapes and capers, wine tastings include foods that showcase both flavors.

Emanuela Bonomo , a rare female winemaker here, explained how the wind created a concentrated flavor of lava minerality and salt in both her produce and small-batch wines. At the vineyard she served fried zucchini with mint and oregano; caponata; and cheese topped with dried zibibbo grapes alongside fig jam, and huge lemons, sliced and drizzled with oil. Everything was layered with aromatic capers. Ms. Bonomo also wanted to make sure that I understood that everything was “fatto a mano”: She and every other farmer still harvest by hand.

At Mr. Rallo’s vineyard, guests can walk past centuries-old olive trees and gardens and through a natural amphitheater of stone walls to examine the gnarled, low-to-the-ground vines and caper bushes. There are multiple tasting options, the most exciting being an under-the-stars dinner that pairs wines with classic Pantescan dishes.

Wellness, volcanic-style

On top of inspiring the rugged terrain, geothermal activity has fashioned the island into a spa playground with hot springs and natural saunas. Near Mr. Armani’s compound in the fishing village of Gadír is a small marina with tubs hewed into the stone. I followed the locals’ lead and submerged myself in a slightly slimy tub (the water is between 104 and 131 degrees Fahrenheit) for about six minutes, then cooled off in the adjacent harbor. Never mind the egg smell. The sulfur and mineral content is why the waters are effective at alleviating aches and pains.

On my boat day, I swam to the Sataria cave, which has three algae-laced hot spring holes with water temperatures progressing from tepid to medium hot. The island’s largest hot spring, Specchio di Venere (Mirror of Venus), is an aquamarine-colored lake that sits in a volcanic crater bordered by mountains and vineyards. On top of gurgling 104 degree water , the draw is a therapeutic (and stinky) mud that bathers slather all over their bodies. Does it work? Well, the heat rash on my arms and chest stopped itching, and my travel-tight back relaxed.

The springs were lovely, but I was most excited to detox in a natural stone sauna tucked into a mountain grotto. I trekked up the western slope of Montagna Grande for about 10 minutes and knew that I had arrived at Benikulá Cave , or Bagno Asciutto, when I saw puffs of steam filter out of a slit in the rocks, and then an older man emerge in a very slinky Speedo. Inside, nine people sat on piping hot stones and the ground (bring a towel!), shvitzing in vapors that can reach 104 degrees. Afterward, everyone relaxed on shaded benches with sweeping views of the Piana di Monastero valley.

Thanks to volcanic cliffs and verdant valleys, there is excellent hiking to counteract the effects of pasta and wine: 80 percent of the island is a national park, Parco Nazionale dell’Isola di Pantelleria, with 63 miles of paths across the Mediterranean scrubland, and up to the forests on Monte Gibele and Montagna Grande.

At every turn, I kept expecting the tourist scrum I had seen in Rome earlier in the month. But it never happened. Not at Dispensa Pantesca , an aperitivo hot spot; not at La Nicchia or Il Principe e il Pirata , the “it” restaurants; and not at Allevolte , a fashion boutique stocked with the kinds of silk caftans and crisply tailored linen trousers that travelers dream about nabbing on an Italian holiday.

If Sikelia , my chic, 20-room hotel, had been in Amalfi, dressed-to-the-nines guests would have been jockeying for selfies amid the fireball sunsets. Not here. “This island is bewitching. But it’s not for everyone,” said the hotel’s owner, Giulia Pazienza Gelmetti. “Getting here is challenging. Getting to the sea is challenging. It attracts a specific type of person. For those who get it, the payoff is huge.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the town on Pantelleria with old-fashioned pasticceria and dingy olive stalls. It is Pantelleria Town, not Scauri. It also referred incorrectly to Sicily, it is a region, not a province.
