We are a family owned and run business based in beautiful North Norfolk where we are very lucky to live. An established company of 20 years, we pride ourselves on providing expert but friendly guides (including the owners Ashley and Nick) who will work hard to ensure that you see the birds you want to whilst having fun in a relaxed atmosphere – it is a holiday after all! We always aim to use the best accommodation in each area we visit, combining good food, amenities and location. It is our expert, reliable and friendly service, with an easy booking process, seamless logistics and pre-tour service (spearheaded by Jane), that keeps our many regular clients returning year on year.

We also think that it is the personal touch that has allowed Oriole Birding to flourish in what is a very competitive industry. Emerging from the challenging times of the Covid pandemic with a rebrand and new website, our company continues to go from strength to strength.

Oriole Birding is an environmentally active company; wildlife and the climate are in trouble and we are doing our bit to help. We support our local wildlife group in our home village of Great Ryburgh and are managing wildlife-friendly habitat on several acres of land around our office where we also have a rewilding project in progress!

MAGGIE WARD

“My family and I have been blown away by the superb photographs! They’ve reminded me of all the ‘wow’ moments in an incredible adventure! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with my last minute decision to join you for the African trip but, it was so much more than I could have hoped for”.

Maggie Ward

November 2022

“Thank you for organising such a wonderful 4 days in France. Argoules with its old buildings, wild flower meadow and family run Auberge was a perfect spot. You’d got together a great bunch of friendly, knowledgeable people and I learnt a good deal from them. The highlights for me would have to be our trip to Marquenterre, first sighting of a Crested Tit ,the confident Water Rail and my early morning walks by  the river surrounded by bird song. Enjoyed every bit of it”.

“Thank you once again for another enjoyable holiday in the East Midlands. Plenty of nice birds and lots of them had young. For us the best were the grey wagtail with four youngsters on the river Bradford, with a dipper as the encore”.

“We also enjoyed the prolonged views of Pied flycatcher together with the Redstarts. Many of the locations were new to us, but there were some familiar favourites as well. Thank you for all your hard work”.

Warren & Elizabeth Mann

“What a brilliant action-packed trip to The Gambia. So many wonderful birds. Can’t wait for the next trip!”

Nigel Trower

November 2021

“My second trip to Gambia with BBC and it just gets better and better!”

“Thanks Rich for such a great week in Scotland. We couldn’t have asked for more. Superb birds, fabulous scenery and great company. Just perfect.”

Tracy & Scott Mantle

“Thanks again for an enjoyable and memorable trip to Scotland. Loved the boat trip, the eagles & Troup Head”.

“Thank you so much for such a great holiday in Scotland, really enjoyed it!”

James Taylor

“Thank you for all your efforts in making it such a super holiday in Norfolk, with lovely birds, nice weather and good company. The feeding terns seen on the boat trip at Blakeney were a terrific spectacle”.

“Organisation and leadership were good, as was the hotel accommodation & food – good value. We were taken to all the premier bird reserves and the boat trip from Morston Quay was especially memorable seeing the diving terns, red breasted merganser and seals resting up on the shore.”

Selwyn Dennis

“Thank you Richard for another well organised, enjoyable trip. As well as seeing so many birds, I enjoyed the other aspects of natural history – flowers, insects, butterflies and damselflies.”

Pamela Goode

“Many thanks for a great trip to Norfolk. It was so good to get away after all this awful time.”

Welcome to Birdfinders, one of Britain's most successful birdwatching holiday companies: run by birders for birders. We've been in business since 1993 and have been growing and adding to our birdwatching tours list every year since. We offer exceptional value birdwatching holidays to locations around the world, so stop wishing, start packing!

TELEPHONE COMMUNICATIONS . Sadly, we don't seem to be able to do anything about the large number of junk calls we are receiving, ranging from double-glazing, bitcoin to just attempted frauds. It is likely that when we are away that our answerphone will be filled within a couple of days so we advise you to use email as your first line of communications.

Birdfinders was founded by Vaughan Ashby in 1993 and has been growing ever since. Recent years have seen amazing growth despite the world economic downturn. We run excellent value and well priced tours to locations around the world and get a lot of repeat business from satisfied customers as well as new customers joining us after they discover what good value Birdfinders is and how good and bird-filled our tours are.

With Birdfinders you get:

At Birdfinders we cater to all levels of ability and enthusiasm is more important than knowledge as our experienced leaders are always on hand to assist. Although all of our birdwatching holidays and birdwatching tours are designed specifically for finding birds, we stop wherever possible for other forms of wildlife and previous tour participants have been able to combine birds with their interests in mammals, butterflies, plants, insects etc. Furthermore, whilst the very nature of birdwatching dictates some early-morning starts to ensure that we see as many species as possible, we can frequently arrange for participants to take time off to relax or sightsee, providing that does not conflict with the itinerary of the tour.

All participants in Birdfinders tours will receive, in advance of the tour, a copy of a previous tour report (where available) or, a few weeks after returning, a copy of the current tour report (if a new tour). To keep costs down tour reports are not originated every year. However, currently we have over 220 tour reports , in pdf format, available on our website. We also have a list of photos from our tours – now nearly 9000 images!

Participants also receive in advance a blank daily bird checklist for the tour, together with an information letter detailing helpful advice such as health requirements, what to bring, recommended reading, etc. At the end of each tour, a feedback form is provided so that tours can constantly be improved.

We can also arrange customised tours to selected countries. See our Custom Tours page or contact us. Also, keep an eye on our Future Tours page to see where we're planning on going to next.

We look forward to welcoming you on one of our tours in the near future.

Birdfinders and our clients have now contributed £55,995 to the World Land Trust for environmental projects and in doing so have balanced the equivalent of over 1880 tonnes of GHG emissions. And we have good news – the money donated by Birdfinders and raised through Birdfinders' tour participants has helped save the endangered Clarke’s Weaver, Sokoke Scops-owl (below) and Golden-rumped Elephant Shrew, all resident in Kenya's threatened Sokoke woodland. The experts in guided bird and wildlife tours and expedition cruises

Welcome to the WildWings website!

WildWings is one of the longest established wildlife tour businesses in the UK and we are rightly proud of our record of offering high quality, meticulously planned holidays to many of the world’s best wildlife destinations.

We continue to expand our extensive range of expedition voyages including a number of new and exclusive cruises, some of which will be targeting some of the least known seabirds on the planet. Mammal tours remain another important part of our offering with new and improved trips regularly added to our website.

Please check our website regularly and sign up to receive our e-newsletter as this is a great way to keep in touch with the ‘world of WildWings’ as we add new holidays and wildlife voyages on a regular basis. If, however, there is somewhere we do not currently list as a destination which you are interested in visiting, please let us know.

We also recommend checking out the website of WildWings’ sister brand  Limosa Holidays  which also offers a great selection of top quality birding holidays, many of which complement the WildWings offering.

Our website allows you to book almost all our trips online and the office team are standing by if you wish to speak to us by phone.

We look forward to hearing from you and hope to travel with you very soon.

My husband and I took our first birding tour with Heatherlea Tours. Everyone associated with the company and the hotel were first rate. They made us feel comfortable and welcome. Our tour guide was excellent and has a keen knowledge of not only the local birds but all manner of wildlife. We can absolutely recommend Heatherlea Tours and will keep them in mind for our next birding tour. Mr & Mrs H
I would like to drop you a line to say thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable holiday Birding In The Highlands last week. Having not been to Scotland before I must say I was not disappointed by the birds and magnificent scenery. Made all the better by our leader’s expert guidance giving us a good chance to connect with the special wildlife in the area. Thanks again to everybody and I’m already looking into a return visit next year! Mr S
We would like to thank you all for a fabulous weeks bird watching holiday. The food was delicious, the room comfortable, and our guides showed us a huge number of species. You were all so pleasant and understanding and worked hard to provide us with a memorable and enjoyable stay. We loved that you were flexible and amended the itinerary to avoid bad weather. Excellent Customer Care

Our tours feature a maximum of just six guests with a minimum of two, often three, guides. This allows us to provide an exceptional experience for every guest and ensure you have the very best chance of enjoying all the birds and wildlife we encounter.

On our custom tours this is often one to one, giving the very best possible experience and allowing us to tailor make the day, or tour, to be perfect for you.

Customer care is our number one priority.

We look after you

We comply with the 2018 Package Travel Regulations, using specialist travel industry lawyers for compliance assurance. We hold Public Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance for your protection and recommend only bonded airlines to secure your flights. When comparing us to other bird tour companies, check their guest-to-guide ratios and legal protections, as many lack proper safeguards, posing risks to you and your investments.

Excellent Accommodation And Food

Our tours stand out by providing you with quality accommodation and excellent food on all our trips. You’ll enjoy comfortable stays and delicious meals, far from the typical on-the-go lunches. We remember, you’re not just on a birdwatching tour but also on your holiday, and we believe great food and accommodation enhance your overall experience. Well-rested and well-fed, you’ll fully enjoy every birdwatching moment.

Vast experience

Our tours are backed by extensive experience in birdwatching, guiding, and travel. We have travelled the world in search of birds, and we can offer unparalleled bird-related travel insights. This expertise shapes our smooth-running tours worldwide. Over the years, we’ve developed a global network of trusted friends and contacts, ensuring support whenever needed. Traveling with Birdwatching Trips means joining a worldwide community of bird watchers and conservationist.

Tours are usually 3 days and 3 nights, but we also offer some longer 5 day tours in the winter and autumn. If we have availability you may be able to join us for a single day. Our Norfolk tours are usually based from Whitehouse Farm Guest house, Hindolveston. In between group tours, we run exclusive tours as well, so if you are a family or a group of friends and are interested in a day or arranging tour then just contact us with your requirements. If you are an individual wishing to see or photograph a certain species or group of birds please contact us for details.

We run a spacious 9 -seater minibus, so we can cater for groups of up to 8 persons, although usually, our maximum group size is 7 persons.

"At our recent Edinburgh SOC meeting I was asked to give a 5-minute report to the group about our Norfolk trip. I emailed all the participants and asked them for their highlights of the trip. Everyone mentioned our guides as the main highlight. We would never have seen so many species if it hadn't been for your planning and detailed local knowledge.  Everyone enjoyed your company and leading styles too, so many thanks."

Welcome to Birdwatching Breaks

A warm welcome to our on-line 2023-2025 brochure of birdwatching holidays, this being our 36th year of operation.

In 2023-2025, we have introduced new tours to interesting countries around the world, all of them having had an inspection trip either by us or our local tour operators.

In Asia, we have destinations to Japan both in winter and early summer. For those who wish to witness the winter wonderland of Japan, we have tours in February 2024 and 2025. The country continues to be a popular destination and we have modified the winter tour slightly to visit an area for Japanese Murrelet. I have also introduced an early summer tour to Japan taking in the Ryuku Islands, Izu Islands and the beautiful island of Hokkaido.

In Africa, we have departures to Guinea-Bissau, Namibia, Senegal and South Africa. These destinations offer you an extremely wide range of African birds and mammals from the Sahel in Senegal to the birds and mammals of South Africa and neighbouring Namibia. In Senegal we have a new tour taking in a pelagic trip off Dakar and the Sahel region along the Senegal River. To the south a new tour has been introduced taking in the unexplored country of Guinea-Bissau and the southern part of Senegal, Casamance. A comprehensive tour taking in the major birding sites of this beautiful country. In our summer months we are going back to Namibia to visit this fascinating desert country for its birds, abundant wildlife and Etosha National Park. South Africa is an exceptional country for birds and wildlife and we have a tour taking in the Cape Town area and along the garden route towards Durban.

In The Americas a birding tour to Colombia the world's best birding country is planned for January 2024 and 2025. In mid-summer a tour to Arctic Canada where we visit Alberta and the isolated outpost of Cambridge Bay where breeding birds abound in the brief summer period. In the Caribbean area we have two one week tours to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico which can be combined to observe many of the island endemic birds species found on the islands.

In the same geographical region I am pleased to revisit Mexico which takes in the bird rich areas of Mexico City, Veracruz, Oaxaca and the impressive Sierra Madre mountain range.

Closer to home, we have departures to Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Ireland, France, Lesvos and Sweden. These countries offer you great birding among spectacular countryside and vistas.

2024 sees the 19th year of Black Isle Birding which covers all our holidays operating in Scotland and Britain. This sector has grown significantly over the last few years and we are pleased to say that we have a growing reputation as one of Scotland’s premier birding companies. Jo and I operate our popular “holiday at home” programme based at Cygnus House. Its location, overlooking the Cromarty Firth and set in two acres of wildlife habitat, makes it is an ideal base for visiting northern Scotland. We have several other Scottish tours to the Western Isles, Islay, Shetland, and an island special visiting Mull, Tiree and The Uists.

I firmly believe we offer you the best birding packages in Scotland, with the country’s top birding guides, along with a friendly and welcoming service with no hidden extras.

The team at Birdwatching Breaks looks forward to welcoming you on one of our tours.

Birding Tours – Day Tours

United kingdom, norfolk birding day tours, which we run at any time.

Norfolk is regarded as one of  the  premier birdwatching locations in the United Kingdom (UK). Its variety of habitats and high number of species make it a must-visit for birders from other parts of the UK and abroad, find out why below.

The county of Norfolk sits on England’s east coast and forms the northern section of the region of East Anglia. Norfolk covers an area of 2,074 square miles (5,372 square kilometers), which makes it the 5th largest county in England, and it is relatively sparsely populated. With a population of around 900,000 people it is the 25th most populated county in England.

Norfolk is a county steeped in an enthralling history. One of its most famous residents is also one of its oldest. Boudica, the Queen of the Iceni tribe, led rebellions in AD 47 and AD 60 against the Roman invasion of Britain. The second rebellion ultimately failed but it cemented her name in British history forever. The name of Norfolk was given to the region in the 5th century by the Angles who controlled the region until it merged with Mercia and Wessex. Vikings arrived in the 9th century and raided the area up until the Norman conquest of 1066. In the 20th century Norfolk became a key center for aviation, especially during World Wars One and Two.

Norfolk’s geography primarily consists of low-lying agricultural areas interspersed with woodland, wet bog, and heathland. The exception to this is the vast Norfolk Broads which are found in the east of the county. This area, of 117 square miles (303 square kilometers), dominates the landscape of east Norfolk and contains 63 broads and seven rivers with over 120 miles (193 kilometers) of navigable waterways. This area is a vital site for wildlife in this part of the county and the UK as a whole. Another key feature of Norfolk’s geography is its varied coastline which includes impressive sea cliffs, vast sand dunes, mudflats, grazing marshes, and reedbeds; all home to an abundance of wildlife throughout the year.

Following  International Ornithological Congress (IOC)  taxonomy (v10.2 in November 2020) the bird list of Norfolk stands at  482 bird species . This list includes many migrant and vagrant species and there are 135 regularly breeding species. Norfolk is a great place to bird year-round.

Our Norfolk day trips will enable you to see many of the key species of the region. What you see will depend entirely on which season you chose to visit the county, and our tours are designed to maximize the sightings of these key species in each season. We have highlighted below some of the key features and species of each season but please read our detailed itineraries for a more comprehensive idea of what you can expect to see. In each season we have several tour routes which visit different areas and habitats to increase the number of species possible.

Winter day tours

Norfolk is an incredibly important area for a wide range of overwintering birds, from further north in the UK or from east and northeast Europe. Vast numbers of wintering wildfowl and waders (shorebirds) are present along the coast, along with nationally important counts of birds of prey. There are also plenty of exciting resident and migrant passerine species too, many of which form large non-breeding flocks making their presence more noticeable. Some of the highlight birds include:  Pink-footed Goose ,  Tundra Bean Goose ,  Greater White-fronted Goose ,  Common Crane ,  Black-tailed Godwit ,  Red Knot ,  Purple Sandpiper ,  Eurasian Bittern ,  Hen Harrier ,  Rough-legged Buzzard ,  Short-eared Owl ,  Merlin ,  Bohemian Waxwing ,  Bearded Reedling  (Bearded Tit),  Black Redstart ,  Water Pipit ,  Brambling ,  Twite ,  Lapland   Longspur  (Lapland Bunting), and  Snow Bunting .

Spring and summer day tours

Norfolk is one of the premier spots for spring migration in the UK. Displaced birds often find themselves on the Norfolk coast before carrying on their journey from Africa to Scandinavia and beyond. There is also a chance of something rarer and unexpected. Tours during the summer months will focus on the breeding species of the county. Some of the highlight species of this period include:  Garganey ,  Common Pochard ,  European Nightjar ,  Common Cuckoo ,  European Turtle Dove ,  Eurasian Stone-curlew ,  Pied Avocet ,  Eurasian Dotterel ,  Wood Sandpiper ,  Little Tern ,  Eurasian Spoonbill ,  Northern Goshawk ,  Eurasian Hobby ,  Woodlark ,  Common Grasshopper Warbler ,  Garden Warbler ,  Lesser Whitethroat ,  Dartford Warbler ,  Ring Ouzel ,  Whinchat , and  Tree Pipit .

Autumn day tours

Autumn, as during Spring, is dominated by the migration of birds through Norfolk. This time, the southerly migration sees birds moving from the far north of Europe to their wintering grounds in Africa. Often these birds become displaced and arrive in the region, sometimes in vast numbers. There is also the chance, with the right winds, of something truly special from further east. While this is a season of the unexpected, some of the typical highlights in autumn include:  Greater Scaup ,  Eurasian Woodcock ,  Eurasian Whimbrel ,  Bar-tailed Godwit ,  Ruff ,  Temminck’s Stint ,  Little Stint ,  Red  (Grey)  Phalarope ,  Little Gull ,  Great Skua ,  Long-eared Owl ,  Short-eared Owl ,  Eurasian Wryneck ,  Merlin ,  Yellow-browed Warbler ,  Barred Warbler ,  Lesser Whitethroat ,  Common Firecrest ,  Ring Ouzel ,  Black Redstart ,  Common Redstart ,  Water Pipit , and  Brambling .

On all of these tours there is the added potential for a scarce or rare bird being found where we will be birding, so it is always worth expecting the unexpected!

Norfolk is such an important county from a birding point of view that it features heavily in our two UK set departure tours:  United Kingdom: Ultimate Spring Tour  and our  United Kingdom: England in Winter Tour . If you fancy a longer birding trip around England and Scotland these are great options.

Here are some tips for birdwatching:

Invest in a good pair of binoculars or a spotting scope. This will allow you to see birds up close and in detail without disturbing them.

Learn about the birds you are likely to see in your area. This will help you identify them and understand their behaviour.

Dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. You may be walking or standing for long periods of time.

Bring a fieldguide or use a birding app on your phone to help you identify the birds you see.

Be patient. Birds are often shy and may take a while to come out into the open.

Try to be as quiet as possible. Loud noises can scare birds away.

Use a bird feeder or birdbath to attract birds to your garden. This can be a great way to see a variety of species up close.

Join a local birding group or go on a guided birding tour to learn from experienced birdwatchers and see new species.

Respect the birds and their habitat. Do not disturb nesting sites or harass birds in any way.

Have fun and enjoy the beauty and diversity of the natural world!

ABERDEENSHIRE BIRD TOURS

Aberdeenshire is blessed with a diverse range of habitats, from the high mountains of the Cairngorms National Park, to sea cliffs and sandy beaches along the coast.  WIth such variety comes a corresponding range of bird species, with summer migrants and winter visitors bolstering the resident species throughout the year.

Aberdeenshire Bird Tours offers bespoke birdwatching tours around Aberdeenshire and North-East Scotland, ranging from a couple of hours to multi-day guided tours. Each tour is tailored to the needs of the client, whether they have a particular species they'd like to see, or just to visit a certain habitat and to see what comes along.

Brambling (c/o Keith Yates)

Highlights

The variety of habitats in Aberdeenshire means there's always something to see.

Springtime sees the area alive with migrants, with Terns nesting at the Ythan Estuary and the the sea cliffs covered in breeding seabirds.  Ospreys return to nest and a good day can see over 100 species seen.

Summer in the area is similar, but is often a good time to visit the uplands, such as the peaks in the Cairngorm National Park. Specialists such as Ptarmigan and Dotterel can be seen, and it's always worthwhile scanning for raptors along any ridges.

Autumns sees our summer visitors start to leave, and our winter guests arrive.  Wildfowl, particularly geese, arrive in large numbers with Loch of Strathbeg and Loch of Skene well worth a visit.

Winter means less daylight but still plenty to see. Wildfowl numbers remain high, but Iceland and Glaucous Gulls visit the area, and there's a chance of a real rarity popping up.

Our Bird Watching Specialist Recommends

"Try Coto Doñana & Extremadura for an excellent introduction to Europe's wetland and steppe birds. I would recommend our bargain holiday, 'Nepal – A Birdwatching Tour' for those interested in Siberian rarities and Ibisbill, while Costa Rica offers a chance to search for arguably the world's most beautiful bird, the Resplendent Quetzal." What Customer Say About Us

I want to express my amazement at the skills and knowledge of your guides… I cannot imagine how they become so proficient in the birds of several different countries!

AM, Uganda 2023

I really can’t think of a way this tour could have been improved. The itinerary was wonderful, the accommodations lovely, and the birds fantastic.

KB, Kenya & Tanzania 2023

This was my first international birding tour experience, and so while I have no basis for comparison, I was completely satisfied by this tour. The guides were excellent.

CC, Panama 2023

Another amazing trip with Rockjumper. The quality of not only the Rockjumper guides but the local guides as well was first class. Travelling with Rockjumper means you basically don’t have to worry about anything other than getting the birds in the binoculars, the guides take care of the rest which results in a really relaxing and enjoyable bird watching trip.

BW, Sri Lanka 2023

In the Rockjumper tradition, [our guide] went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure the serious birders in our group found our birds. This included several later night expeditions into the forest for owls and other nocturnal critters. [He] managed to handle everyone with great patience and skill.

RO, Ecuador 2023

This was my first Rockjumper trip. I definitely will be a repeat customer. The booking process was easy and painless. The transport and hotel logistics during the trip were flawless. [Our guides] worked diligently to make sure we saw as many birds as possible.
