Mobile, Ala.

Alabama's Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail has many stops worthy of a trip, but for the colder months, we'd opt to head to the southernmost courses on the Trail, in and around Mobile, where there are two 36-hole facilities.

The Lakewood Club: Azalea

Situated on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, the Azalea course is a relatively flat, tree-lined layout. Azalea bushes line many holes, making the course especially scenic during the spring bloom. A couple of the par 3s—Nos. 4 and 15—have two greens on each, making them play quite differently depending on which ones are in use.

Rock Creek Golf Club

Rock Creek Golf Club

Fairhope, al.

While on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, make sure to play Rock Creek. As is typical of many Alabama layouts, tall pines line the fairways, which often camber back towards the center, making them play wider than they appear. There are significant elevation changes, including at the par-4 second hole, which drops 70 feet from tee to fairway. Ravines and wetlands are also commonplace at Rock Creek, which despite all the intriguing features is a playable track.

Time will tell how long West Point will remain an underrated destination, but with two courses ranked on our 100 Greatest Public list , it's tough to find a better one-two punch than Mossy Oak and Old Waverly. Round out your trip at Mississippi State University's course, a quality college layout that has newly resurfaced greens.

Mossy Oak Golf Club

Mossy Oak Golf Club

West point, ms.

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:  Back in mid-1980s, George Bryan, who ran Bryan Foods, now part of Sara Lee Corp., created Old Waverly Golf Club in tiny West Point, Miss., a Bob Cupp/Jerry Pate design and former U.S. Women’s Open host that to me is a bit underrated. In the early 2000s, Bryan bought an old dairy farm (Knob Hill Dairy) across the highway and hired Gil Hanse to give him an Old School public golf course. George named it Mossy Oak, after a West Point company of the same name that supplies outdoor camouflage gear. (The company has a 10-percent interest in the course.) He was going to call it Howlin' Wolf after a legendary blues singer born in West Point, but his heirs wanted too much money.

Old Waverly Golf Club

Old Waverly Golf Club

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten:  I've always admired Jerry Pate's work in golf architecture. He was one of the few PGA Tour pros who really got down and dirty in golf design, and I especially liked the few courses he did with architect Bob Cupp. Their second collaboration was Old Waverly in tiny West Point, Miss., a dream project of West Point native George Bryan, who at the time was chairman of the meat division of the Sara Lee Corporation based in the tri-city area (West Point, Starkville and Columbus) known as Mississippi's Golden Triangle.

One of our picks among the best golf coureses in Scottsdale , Grayhawk Golf Club has been a staple of Arizona golf since it first opened in 1994. The property features a pair of par-72 courses, The Talon Course and The Raptor Course , each with its own distinctive features. It has hosted tour events as well as the Men's and Women's NCAA Division I Golf Championship in 2021, which it will also host in 2022 and 2023.

The property includes the Quill Creek Cafe, which is an American and Southwestern cafe with incredible views of the course. The Plantation Course at Kapalua Resort features amazing views of the surrounding mountains and is home to the annual PGA Tour Sentry Tournament of Champions featuring previous Tour winners. This course features varied terrain and elevation changes, and unlike many of the others on this list, is actually forgiving with broad fairways and large greens. No wonder we picked it as one of the best golf courses in Hawaii that you can play.

You'll also find the Bay Course on property, which has its famous No. 17 hole which is the only hole to play over the ocean in Maui. Kapalua offers four different lodging choices, which vary in price. Dining includes three delicious options including the Plantation House Restaurant, Taverna, and the Bay Cafe.

Royal Isabela Resort (Isabela, Puerto Rico)

Another lovely Caribbean destination,  the Royal Isabela creates a lovely course that evokes the links traditions of Scotland and England. Numerous holes perched on cliffs over 200 feet above the ocean provide golfers with breathtaking views. Considered Puerto Rico's best course, it is a difficult course with numerous blind shots and small greens. Luxury accommodations at the resort allow golfers to relax after a day on the David Pfaff designed course.

The course initially appears forgiving with its large greens and fairways, however, course management is necessary and rewards correct decision making. The course is home to the annual Honda Classic of the PGA Tour, giving amateurs the chance to play the same course as the professionals.

Five other courses are part of the resort including the Palmer, Fazio, Estate, Match, and Staple courses. Accommodations include guest rooms, suites, cottages, and vacation homes. You'll find some of the best restaurants in Palm Beach as well as activities for anyone in the family.

Cove Club Golf Course at Cabo del Sol Resort (Cabo San Lucas, Mexico)

Cabo San Lucas, long known as a tourist destination for travelers escaping the cold, is also home to a wonderful beachside course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Known for its five oceanside holes, the Cove Club Course challenges golfers by incorporating the local geography into a graceful layout. Famously, the 17th hole requires golfers to launch their tee shots over a barren sandy cove onto the green. It is just one reason why the Cove Club Course is routinely listed as one of Mexico's top courses.

You'll also find the Desert Course, designed by Tom Weiskopf. This course combines beautiful ocean views and all of the challenges you'll want from one of the master designers of desert golf. The Cove Club is a swimming and recreation club that will offer some additional dining and fun.

Pro Tips For a Memorable Winter Golf Trip

Plan your winter golf getaway in advance.

It can be fun to “fly by the seat of your pants” and be spontaneous, but when it comes to winter golf trips, we recommend you plan several weeks before your trip.

You want to stay in a nice place and get prime tee times on the best courses in the area. To achieve this result, you need to be making reservations well before you jump in the car or head to the airport.

Organize Your Packing List Of Winter Golf Essentials

Even in warmer climates, winter weather can be unpredictable. You need to be prepared for a cold spell or windy conditions. Or, even warmer weather than expected.

To put it another way, you should pack efficiently, but give yourself options. Bring an umbrella and a windbreaker. Don’t forget to add your rain hood to your bag. It is better to pack something you don’t use than to need something you didn’t pack!

Keep It Simple - Travel With a Lightweight Golf Bag

What’s the worst part of your golf getaway? It can be getting your golf clubs to your final destination. An easy solution is to use a lightweight golf bag. Check out the El Camino by Sunday Golf. It is easy to carry on the course and through the airport. Combine the El Camino with the Mule travel bag and eliminate all stress from your golf travel.

Do you love this idea, want even a simpler solution? The Loma XL can provide an even more relaxing trip - bring 8 clubs and enjoy your golf weekend. Make great memories on the course, not bad ones in the terminal.

Stay Warm And Comfortable

Yes, we know you are planning to find warm weather, but we don’t want your trip to be ruined because you are uncomfortable on the golf course. The key to winter golf (even in warm climates) is layers.

The temperature can change by 25+ degrees from the time you are on the driving range to the back 9. Dress in layers and you will always have options.

Don’t Put Your Clubs On Ice - Take A Winter Golf Trip

All golfers have the same problem. They don’t want to get rusty during the winter, but playing in cold weather gets old quickly. If only there was a way to enjoy the game you love without the freezing temperatures.

We have the answer! Plan your winter golf trip today and you might even come home with a tan!

Winter Golf

If you live in a northern state, you may have felt that your game isn’t as good as it could be. After all, when you have to take three to five months off every year, your game will suffer. Thankfully, these winter golf destinations throughout the United States will help you to keep your golfing skills in tip-top shape.

Table of Contents

1. Las Vegas, Nevada

Recommended Courses:

  • Shadow Creek Golf Course
  • The Wolf at Las Vegas Paiute Golf Resort
  • Reflection Bay Golf Club

Average Temperature:

Unless you’re built for warm weather, you don’t want to go golfing in the summer in Las Vegas. Fall and spring are best. However, the high average temperatures also make winter a great time to play. Most golf courses near Las Vegas are open year-round. The best part is that most of the prices drop during winter, so you can get a few rounds in for a discounted price.

While the average daily temperatures for Las Vegas are rather tolerable, it’s good to keep in mind that it’s a desert region. This means that when the sun goes down, the temperatures drop rather dramatically to 30°F or lower. If you’re going to be out early in the morning, or late at night, it’s a good idea to bring a jacket or wear layers.

2. Scottsdale, Arizona

  • Troon North Golf Club
  • The Stadium Course at TPC Scottsdale
  • Padre Course at Camelback Inn, Scottsdale

Scottsdale, Arizona gets an average of 300 days of sunshine every year. If you’re looking to go golfing in winter, then this sunny destination is definitely the way to go. Even in the heart of winter, the temperatures are quite nice, running close to 70°F.

As you can imagine, most, if not all, golf courses in Scottdale, Arizona are open during even the coldest months of the year. It’s not just Scottdale either, but most of the surrounding area, so don’t be afraid to take a drive and try out other golf courses.

3. Orlando, Florida

  • Dubsdread Golf Course
  • Shingle Creek Golf Course
  • Waldorf Astoria Couse

Orlando, Florida is open throughout the entire year. With temperatures above 70°F even in the dead of winter, there’s no need to close down. In fact, if you’re from a colder state, the winter is likely the best time to play. Other months are often too hot for people from out of state to enjoy themselves.

Unlike many other states, though, Florida’s prime golfing season tends to be in the winter. This means that you’re not likely to find any discounts or sales if you’re looking to golf in Orlando, Florida during the winter.

4. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

  • Heathland Course at Legends Resort
  • Kings North Golf Course
  • Tidewater Golf Course

While winter isn’t the best time to go golfing in South Carolina, it’s not a bad option. Though there’s still the chance for a little precipitation and cloudy weather to ruin a game, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ll have a bit of sun and dry weather.

Before you try out any golf course, you’ll want to double-check how the course handles winter. Some places, in an attempt to make their greens look nicer, will use sprays to make the grass look as alive as possible. While it does look a lot nicer than a brown golf course, it’s quick to stain your nice shoes and pants.

5. Albuquerque, New Mexico

  • Executive Course at Ladera Golf Course
  • Sandia Golf Club’s Course
  • Dam Nine Course at Arroyo Del Oso Golf Course

Despite the cold temperatures, Albuquerque, New Mexico is a great winter destination. It gets over 300 days of sunshine a year. With a little bit of sun, even the cooler days are pleasant to play.

If you don’t mind the cold, New Mexico is a great golfing destination. Other people tend to pick places with a little warmer weather in the winter, so there are often discounts to bring people in. The brown grass may not catch your eye, but the mountains in the background make up for it.

6. San Antonio, Texas

  • Hill Country Golf Club
  • The Resort Course at La Cantera Golf Club
  • The Quarry Golf Course

While Houston and Austin sometimes have to shut down golf courses on occasion due to the weather, San Antonio is south enough to rarely ever get snow. In fact, winter is the dry season in San Antonio, so you’re not likely to get much bad weather to mess up your golfing game.

Unfortunately, the weather is sometimes a bit unpredictable. Though the average temperatures are nice, there are times when a cold front sweeps through the area. Don’t blindly trust your weather app, and make sure to pack up layers for your golfing trip.

7. San Diego, California

  • Mission Trails Golf Course
  • Balboa Park Golf Course
  • Rancho Bernardo Inn Golf Course

San Diego, California has some pretty steady and pleasant temperatures, even in the winter. San Diego is one of the best places to golf throughout the entire year. The summers aren’t too hot, and the winters aren’t too cold. Sunny skies and a nice temperature are the standard in the area.

The best part is that it’s often still wet enough throughout the year that you can have naturally green grass to play on. Many times, the grass is dead or dormant when you go golfing in the winter. It changes the way you play and makes for a unique, and not always pleasant, experience. But golfing in winter in San Diego isn’t much different from playing at any other time of the year.

8. Mobile, Alabama

  • Falls Course in Magnolia Grove Golf Club
  • Azalea City Golf Course
  • Spring Hill Golf Course

Golf Digest often recommends Mobile, Alabama as one of the best golfing destinations in the United States on a budget. While most of the year, it’s too hot and muggy to enjoy, the winter weather brings a bit of respite.

The humidity is something to be feared, though. While a 60°F day is pretty tolerable in most areas, the humidity will often make it feel a bit colder. Bring a sweater or a warm drink to help you brave the temperatures a bit better. The humidity might not always be pleasant, but it does make for nicer greens.

9. Palm Beach, Florida

  • Ocean Course at the Breakers
  • Palm Beach Par-3 Golf Course
  • The Park West Palm Golf Course

Even in the middle of winter, Palm Beach, Florida isn’t very cold. The average temperatures are close to 80°F. You’re sure to stay warm and feel like you’re golfing during peak fall and spring times while you’re in Palm Beach.

Though it’s a fairly popular golfing destination, especially in winter, the surrounding area isn’t expensive. You can find some good hotels and golf courses that aren’t overly expensive. Playing right on the coast for the perfect view isn’t unattainable or out of your price range here.

10. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

  • Atlantic Dunes at Sea Pines Golf Course
  • Oyster Reef Golf Club
  • George Fazio Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes Golf Course

While not every golf course is open during the winter on Hilton Head is open during the winter, enough of them are to make it a good golfing destination in the off-season. The weather in winter is also mostly dry with lots of sun and mild temperatures.

There are times it’s a little rainy or misty on Hilton Head Island in the winter. Usually, you can play in a standard T-shirt or a sun shirt. However, it never hurts to bring a light winter jacket or rain jacket with you in case the weather turns.

What’s The Coldest Weather You Can Play Golf In?

You usually want to play in temperatures above 40°F. While it’s possible to play in colder conditions, it often leads to a poorer game and permanent damage to the course.

If it’s not sunny, or the weather is bad, then 40°F might still be too cold. This temperature is under ideal conditions where it’s sunny and dry, and the wind is minimal.

Are There Winter Rules for Golf?

Because grass is usually dead in winter, there are some additional rules for winter to keep the grass as pristine as possible. One of the biggest rules is that you have to clean and place your ball within 6 inches of where it ended up.

This rule makes it easier for golfers because balls tend to get muddy and sink a little. It also helps to preserve the grass as digging down into the soft soil to get to a ball can often lead to the destruction of the turf. This rule is often in play in parts of the world and the US with wetter winters.

Can You Golf Year-Round in Tennessee?

It is possible to golf year-round in most of Tennessee. However, storms and cold temperatures sometimes limit the das you can play. If you want a better chance of your tee time not getting canceled, then it’s best to choose a state that’s a little further south.

But if you live in Tennessee, or are going to be there for a while, there are definitely places you can get a game in during the winter. Just be braced for the cold temperatures, which range between 48°F and 53°F in the winter months.

Knowing the time and weather are key to an enjoyable golfing experience. We’ve covered extensively about the best time of the year for a golf trip . Check it out.

winter sun golf breaks

Praia d’El Rey lies on a rugged stretch of the Portuguese coastline some 40 miles north of Lisbon in a region known as the Costa Prata.

Cabell B. Robinson who learned his trade under the guidance of Robert Trent Jones set out to create a layout at Praia d’El Rey that made the very most of the natural terrain.

Opened for play in 1997, the American was successful in his mission.

Travelling along the rough-edged Atlantic coast, most of the course has a links-like feel with firm fairways leading to sloping greens.

Fergus is Golf Monthly's resident expert on the history of the game and has written extensively on that subject. He is a golf obsessive and 1-handicapper. Growing up in the North East of Scotland, golf runs through his veins and his passion for the sport was bolstered during his time at St Andrews university studying history. He went on to earn a post graduate diploma from the London School of Journalism. Fergus has worked for Golf Monthly since 2004 and has written two books on the game; "Great Golf Debates" together with Jezz Ellwood of Golf Monthly and the history section of "The Ultimate Golf Book" together with Neil Tappin , also of Golf Monthly.

Fergus once shanked a ball from just over Granny Clark's Wynd on the 18th of the Old Course that struck the St Andrews Golf Club and rebounded into the Valley of Sin, from where he saved par. Who says there's no golfing god?

Golfweek's best 2024: top 100 international golf courses, share this article.

best winter golf trip locations

Welcome to Golfweek’s Best newest course ranking, the Top 100 International Courses.

Golfweek’s Best has ranked classic and modern international courses in the past, but 2024 marks the first year in which all ages of courses have been combined to build one comprehensive ranking of layouts outside the U.S.

The hundreds of members of our course-ratings panel continually evaluate courses and rate them based on our 10 criteria. They also file a single, overall rating on each course. Those overall ratings on each course are averaged to produce an overall rating. Each course is then ranked against other courses in the region.

This list focuses on the golf courses themselves, not resorts as a whole or other club amenities. Each golf course included is listed with its average rating from 1 to 10, its location, architect(s) and the year it opened.

Courses must meet a minimum threshold of votes to qualify, and it can take several years for a layout to garner enough votes to show up. Several new layouts either did not open in time to make the 2024 list or have not been played by enough raters to qualify yet – South Cape in South Korea, Ellerston in Australia and Cabot Saint Lucia’s Point Hardy are good examples.

With all that said, we hope you enjoy our inaugural list of Top 100 International Courses.

Moscow in Winter: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

best winter golf trip locations

WITGOAWAY / Getty Images

Travelers who enjoy bundling up for a snowy climate will appreciate all that Moscow has to offer, come winter. This ornamental Russian city shows its vibrant cultural heritage when temperatures plummet and the snow starts falling on Red Square. Unlike other cities, whose residents scurry away to hibernate in December, the people of Moscow embrace their sub-zero climate in style. They don their furs and ushanka hats (traditional hats with earflaps) to peruse Christmas markets, dine out at restaurants, and attend the opera.

In winter, Moscow's scenery looks awe-inspiring under a dusting of snow. There's something undeniably charming about seeing historic sites like the colorful, tented rooftops of Saint Basil's Cathedral capped with a layer of icy frost. The food here is warm and comforting, and the cultural winter events are not to be missed. Plus, it's cheaper to visit Moscow during the winter and it's far less crowded with tourists.

Moscow is not where you go to get a suntan over the holidays. In fact, the Moscow winter is enough to chill any hearty tourist to the bone—but that's all part of the fun. The average high for December, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is 27 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 2.7 degrees Celsius); for January, it's 23 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 5 degrees Celsius); and for February, it's 26 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 3.3 degrees Celsius). Take these average temperatures with a grain of salt, however, as it certainly isn't abnormal for the air to dip into the teens.

The Moscow cold is often accompanied by generous amounts of ice and snow deposited by frequent winter storms. The city goes unfazed by these storms—cars still drive around and people in boots trod through the snowpack. You'll see thick icicles growing on roof overhangs, so be sure not to linger underneath them while you're out touring the area's magnificent cathedrals.

Lastly, don't be surprised if your flights in or out get canceled or delayed. This can be one of the drawbacks to traveling in the winter, in general.

What to Pack

Stuffing your suitcase with bulky (and heavy) winter clothing can be frustrating and expensive, which tends to deter Moscow winter travel altogether. A trip to the city between early December and late February requires enough accessories to cover the extremities: wooly hats, cold-weather socks, knit scarves, and a good pair of gloves. Also pack a coat that falls below the hips, weatherproof boots, and ski pants, if you have them. Remember, fashion is second only to avoiding hypothermia in this polar city.

The Moscow winter calendar is brimming with cultural events for travelers to attend each winter. Many events take place during the Christmas holiday; then, the city caps off the winter with a farewell festival, come February.

  • The annual Russian Winter Festival , which spans an entire month starting mid-December, takes place in several locations throughout the city. Head to Izmailovo Park or Revolution Square to see everything from over-the-top ice sculptures to traditional dance performances. Watch the professional ice skaters and visit food trucks that serve traditional fare.
  • Moscow's New Year’s Eve celebration is one of the city's biggest events of the year. Tens of thousands of people spend it in Kremlin—Moscow's central complex—watching the Kremlin tower strike midnight, while fireworks crack in the background. Others attend the Christmas tree light show at Red Square.
  • Christmas in Russia falls on January 7, and the week between New Year’s Eve and Christmas Day is a time for Russians to relax. Families focus on spending time together at home, preparing traditional foods like ukha (fish soup) and sauerkraut. Tourists can use this uncrowded time wisely by seeking out the city's culinary gems. Make sure to check the hours of operations on restaurants, shops, and other businesses before visiting them during this week. While much of the city's businesses might be closed, you might get special treatment at the places that stay open.
  • Maslenitsa , Russia’s farewell-to-winter festival, occurs in late February or early March. This pagan celebration is marked by games, contests, and cultural traditions. It’s held in the Red Square area every year and draws crowds of Muscovites and visitors alike.

Winter Travel Tips

  • In order to obtain a Russian travel visa, you'll need to be invited by a relative or friend who is a citizen or a hosting tour company.
  • Traveling to Moscow in the winter helps you avoid the summer crowds; however, flight delays due to weather are common. Plan an extra day on either end of your trip in case you get held up.
  • If you plan to visit a Russian banya, a Slavic steam bathhouse, take note that most people bathe in the buff. However, most bathhouses are separated by sex.
  • Plan alternating indoor and outdoor activities so that you don't get too cold. A visit to the Tretyakov Gallery, the State Armory Museum, or the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts provides a nice respite from the frigid temperatures.

Visit myrtle beach unveils epic mini golf trail.

Visit Myrtle Beach has announced a new mini golf trail encompassing the destination's Grand Strand ... [+] region.

Myrtle Beach is a popular vacation destination known for a number of longstanding attractions, from beaches, to family-friendly activities, to golfing. Now, it has a new offering based upon another longtime pastime – miniature golf.

Visit Myrtle Beach, the city’s tourism board, has unveiled the Myrtle Beach Mini Golf Trail , featuring more than 30 mini golf courses along the destination’s 60-mile Grand Strand.

“The idea for the Myrtle Beach Mini Golf Trail came from our love of mini golf,” said Karen Riordan, Visit Myrtle Beach’s president and CEO. “More than one million rounds of mini golf are played annually here, so it’s evident how cherished this nostalgic experience truly is.”

This South Carolina city is referred to as the “Mini Golf Capital of The World.” According to Riordan, Myrtle Beach welcomes a Mini Golf Masters tournament at Hawaiian Rumble in North Myrtle Beach, courtesy of the U.S. Pro Mini Golf Association, every October.

Myrtle Beach’s mini golf history dates back nearly a century. Much of it is thanks to mini golf course designer James “Poddy” Bryan leaving his mark on the area.

The Myrtle Beach native was dubbed by Sports Illustrated as the “Father of Modern Miniature Golf.” Bryan’s work is said to have significantly influenced the development of the region’s mini golf offerings.

Bryan made his mini golf debut in the 1960s when he introduced a jungle-themed course that set the stage for his well-accomplished career. Bryan is also the grandson of one of the first leaders of what is now known as Burroughs and Chapin. This company is behind many of the major visitor attractions in Myrtle Beach.

“Bryan’s visionary approach revolutionized the game, transforming it from mundane ‘carpet golf’ to multi-level, expansive adventures,” said Riordan. “His designs not only elevated the sport but also solidified Myrtle Beach as the ultimate destination for mini golf enthusiasts.”

Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf in Myrtle Beach was designed by James "Poddy" Bryan. Bryan also ... [+] designed other mini golf courses in Myrtle Beach.

Bryan designed approximately 20 courses in the Myrtle Beach area and more than 200 nationwide. His notable mini golf courses designs in Myrtle Beach include Tropical Village, Pelican Points and Rainbow Falls.

His final design in Myrtle Beach was Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf, which opened in 1998. It is still in operation.

“Though Bryan passed away in 2002, his legacy has continued to live on and still shapes the landscape of mini golf in our region,” said Riordan. “As newer courses emerge, our community’s dedication to providing exceptional mini golf experiences remains.”

Among others, Myrtle Beach’s Mini Golf Trail includes Ripley’s Crazy Golf, Captain Hook’s Adventure Golf and Broadway Grand Prix.

Ripley's Crazy Golf in Myrtle Beach is among more than 30 mini golf courses in the new Myrtle Beach ... [+] Mini Golf Trail.

The trail will encompass a digital pass system allowing players to check in at each course using their mobile device. Players can win fun prizes as they accumulate points.

Myrtle Beach is also known as a major golf destination, having over 80 championship courses crafted by golf legends such as Arnold Palmer, Robert Trent Jones and Greg Norman. Yet, mini golf holds its own against this sport as a fun offshoot.

“Unlike traditional golf, where precision and distance rule, mini golf beckons you to get lost in its whimsical obstacles and themed wonderlands,” explained Riordan. “What sets mini golf apart is its universal appeal. Here, everyone, from seasoned golfers to novices, can partake in the thrill of the game.”
