Toy haulers are RVs that have dedicated storage space for large recreational toys. Fifth wheels and travel trailers are the most common types of RV toy haulers on the market, but there are a couple motorhome options available. Toy hauler motorhomes are usually Class A or Class C RVs with built-in garages.

Regardless of the RV class, a toy hauler RV features a living area and a garage space that allows you to load and unload your toys. Toy haulers can come in both fifth wheel and travel trailer options. The biggest difference between toy haulers and other RVs is the dedicated garage space, but there are other amenities that may influence your RV experience.

Fifth wheels are split-level RVs that must be towed by a truck with a special hitch. A fifth wheel will usually have a living space or bunk area on the lower level and a private bedroom that hangs over the truck bed. They are some of the largest travel trailers available. They’re often used by full-time RVers because of the luxurious living space. Fifth wheels can have multiple slide-outs, outdoor kitchens, interior kitchens, bathrooms and a dedicated entertaining area. Most can sleep up to eight people.

Fifth wheels connect with a U-shaped coupling mounted in a truck bed, which makes them easier to tow. Due to their size, you will need a large tow vehicle. Half-ton trucks like the Ford F-150 or the Toyota Tundra with large towing capacities are great options. Remember to double-check your vehicle’s maximum towing capacity before you tow.

Travel trailers are some of the most popular options for young families and first-time RV owners because they are often a more affordable choice. Prices often range from $10,000 to $200,000, but the average cost sits between $20,000 and $50,000. In comparison, toy haulers are more expensive, but they also offer more amenities compared to most travel trailers.

Toy haulers can vary in size; it all depends on how much storage and space you need. The standard width of a toy hauler is between 7.5 to 8 feet wide and around 13 feet tall, in order to stay within federal and various state guidelines for travel vehicles. Features include a one-piece TPO roof membrane, laminated aluminum framed rear ramp door, laminated aluminum side wall, roof, and end walls. The inside is very well appointed and the mandatory luxury package adds o the overall feel and comfort.

Toy haulers are also great for transporting golf carts. While not as exciting as an ATV or dirtbike, these are still a great way to get around. This is particularly the case if you’re visiting anywhere popular with retirees, which tends to have great infrastructure for getting around in a golf cart.

Of course, a toy hauler’s garage isn’t the only advantage it has. Due to their design, toy haulers tend to be very spacious, and can often accommodate more people than a standard travel trailer.

In addition to extra sleeping space, some toy haulers may even have extra kitchens or other extra spaces. Plus, they often come with a rear party deck, which you can use like a patio for spending time outside your RV.

Some examples of cars that can fit into some toy haulers include 2 door jeeps and smart cars. However, even if it is possible to fit a car into your toy hauler, you’ll need to consider if it’s really worth it.

Anything in your toy hauler comes out of the weight limit, and if you’re hauling a car, it’s going to put a significant dent in your capacity. With a car in your toy hauler’s garage, you’ll have precious little capacity left over for passengers and cargo. 

Do Travel Trailer Toy Haulers Smell Like Gas?

One big potential downside to travel trailer toy haulers is that, in some cases, they can smell like gas inside. 

Ultimately, this makes sense: a garage is a garage, after all, whether it’s in your house or your toy hauler. And when you store anything gas-powered inside it, there’s a decent chance things will start to smell like gas.

First, always fix any leaks and clean any spills ASAP. If you notice any leaks, you should do everything you can to, at the very least, patch it for the short term, and you should seek a long-term fix as soon as you can.

Gas spills should also be cleaned up promptly, but ensure you do so properly. Never use water or a vacuum to clean a gas spill; instead, use an absorbent material like kitty litter or an absorbent pad, then dispose of this properly per local regulations. 

If gas soaks into a porous material like wood or fabric, getting rid of the smell can be challenging. Your best bet is to do everything you can to increase airflow and circulation around the spill, so that the absorbed gasoline can evaporate away. In the short term, a little bit of vinegar applied to the affected area can help cut down on the smell.
