Great Wall Tourism Board | Updated Great Wall of China Travel Information
“He who has not climbed the Great Wall is not a true man!”, as what was said by China’s first Chairman Mao Zedong, the Great Wall should be on every traveler’s bucket list. This China’s greatest engineering triumph, made from brick, stone, tamped earth and wood, is a direct link with legendary dynasties of China’s past as there were continuous ancient dynasties invested unquantifiable labour and material resources to construct and reconstruct the Great Wall. Nowadays, you can still see there are more than 5,500 miles of the Great Wall snaking its way over the perched mountainsides from the gobi desert in northwestern China to the sea coast of far eastern China. Beijing, the capital city, possesses about 573km (356 miles) of the Great Wall including the world famous Badaling, Mutianyu, Jiankou, etc., stretching alone the steep peaks and hills at its remote northern districts. You can easily plan a satisfied day trip to the closer sections of the Great Wall from Beijing. But for those who want to explore, it’s available to hike, bike even camp on some sections. Contact China Discovery to tailor-make a Great Wall trip now!

Jiankou Great Wall is Not Open for Tourists :
The Beijing Great Wall Protection and Management Regulations clearly state that it is prohibited to organize tours or climb sections of the Great Wall that have not been approved for visitation. Violators may be subject to corresponding fines. The Jiankou Great Wall is an unopened section of the Great Wall, and climbing it can cause damage to the structure. This not only hinders the preservation of the Great Wall but also poses significant risks to the safety of visitors. Therefore, we urge everyone not to climb the Jiankou Great Wall. Tourists can visit and hike at well-developed sections of the Great Wall such as Mutianyu , Jinshanling , Simatai , Huanghuacheng , and Badaling instead.

Hi What is the total duration needed to include private transfer to Mutianyu, purchase of tickets, shuttle bus transfer, cable car to Tower 14, walking from Tower 14=>20=>6 and toboggan? Is the private transfer cost of $150 enough to cover the number of hours needed? (we are a party of 4 adults, intending to travel in December)
It is about 3 hours. The price covers 9 hours max.
Hi, I heave read in internet about a direct bus from Dongzhimen wai station 东直门外 to Mutianyu that departs daily at 8.30 and costs about 30 rmb. (bus service started in october 2018). Do you know such bus and could you confirm it? Thank you for your reply in advance
Hi Karl, I am afraid no direct bus available at 8:30 to Mutianyu at Dongzhimenwai
For everyone else reference as of today(Dec28), there is this bus. The bus stn is not by the side of road as other bus, but somewhere inside a bus depot compound (still same as on maps) in the middle. You can see the pink sign as inside picture. There might be a traffic attendant asking you ‘Mutianyu? That way’.
Hi Sophie! I’m considering a trip up to Beijing from Shanghai with my 3 children (age 4, and twins age 8) around May 7 for 2-3 days…. Considering Mutianyu instead of Bataling but on a budget and trying to keep it simple. Do you have reduced rates for children? Haven’t booked a hotel/hostel yet but with probably stay at a budget hotel near forbidden city…..
HI Tracey, our trip consultant has sent the reply to you, thanks.
We are following the directions from Dongzhimen at the moment. The staff on the bus will tell you when to get off if you show them where you need to go. The second bus we had to take, H36, only stops at certain times. 6:20, 11:30 and 17:00
A taxi from that stop is between ¥45 – ¥60
A lady approached us offering to take us to the wall for ¥45 and after checking what an Express Didi will cost (¥44) we decided to get in this lady’s scary van. So far we’re well on track to the wall though.
Not sure what time you’d have to leave to catch the 6:20 bus as the 916 express bus takes quite some time to get to this stop.
Hi Lize, yes, it is really not easy for a foreigner to take bus. I am happy that you finally solved the problem and reached the wall. For the back bus, it takes about 2-3 hours back to Dongzhimen.
Hi we are 2 adults planning to visit mutianyu section on 31st March How much it cost for pick up n drop off wangfujing area seat in coach?we don’t want any shopping stops.planning to spend 3-4hours What does your package include? Quote in cny
Hi Drake, thanks for your inquiry, we have a non-shopping tour to Mutianyu Great Wall, the cost is USD40 per person, check the details at https://www.intochinatravel.com/mutianyu-great-wall-bus-tour/
I will arrive at the airport on May 8th, 2019 at 2:05 p.m. And leave May 9th at 1:30 a.m. Will that give me enough time for one of your tours to see the wall?
Hi Richard, I am afraid your schedule does not fit with our group tour. Advise to rent a private car with driver to visit the Great Wall on May 9th. We will contact you and provide the quote.
Hii, Sophie, We are planning to visit Beijing during last week of December, 2018. Can you please send me detailed itinerary for Mutianyu Great Wall visit. Also, can you suggest a skiing trip around beijing during that time. Thanks

The history of Mutianyu Great Wall can be traced back to the Northern Qi period, but it was primarily rebuilt by General Xu Da under the command of Zhu Yuanzhang on the site of the Northern Qi Great Wall, and has a history of over 600 years. This section of the Great Wall became an ancient military defense fortress not only because of its strategic location but also due to its well-preserved and exquisite design, showcasing the superb military architecture of the Ming Dynasty. The construction of Mutianyu Great Wall reflects the outstanding achievements and wisdom of ancient Chinese architecture and serves as an important witness to China's ancient political, military, economic, and cultural history. In 1987, Mutianyu Great Wall was listed as a World Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO, and in 2006 it was declared a national key cultural relic protection unit, further affirming its significant position in world cultural heritage. Stretching 5,400 meters long, Mutianyu Great Wall attracts countless visitors with its steep terrain and rich historical and cultural connotations, making it a tourist destination that blends history and nature.
Why Mutianyu Great Wall
There are 8 main sections of Great Wall( Badaling , Juyongguan, Huanghuacheng, Jiankou, Mutianyu, Gubeikou , Jinshanling and Simatai , etc.) in Beijing are pretty famous and we inclusively recommend Mutianyu section for most normal travelers.
- 1. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
- 2. Less comercial but more original than Badaling.
- 3. More trees, better vegetation, better air, and more vibrant colors in all seasons.
- 4. Ranked first in tripadvisor's list of the best attractions in Beijing, the Mutianyu Great Wall is far more satisfying than other sections of Great Wall.
- 5. It is easy to get around and you can see the best parts in 0.5-1 day; there are also good accommodations and restaurants to eat.

Taking the cable car.
The Mutianyu Great Wall Cable Car is a convenient way to access the wall. The cable car brings visitors to the essential parts of Mutianyu Great Wall, including Mutianyu Pass, the watchtower, and the Great Corner Tower.
Taking the Toboggan
The Mutianyu Toboggan is a 1580-meter-long stainless steel track, also known as the "dryland sled." It offers visitors a new recreational and sports experience, combining fun and excitement. Visitors can feel the thrill of speeding down or gliding gently, being quickly transported to the foot of the Great Wall.

For those who enjoy hiking, exploring the Great Wall on foot is an option. For example, the west line is considered the most scenic route, leading to the highest point, the Hero Slope; the east line focuses on reaching the main pass and experiencing the toboggan; the middle line provides a dual experience of both the cable car and the toboggan.

Good morning,
What is the timetable of opening for the tourist information centers at Beijing airport?
Thank you in advance, Estefanía
Hi Estefanía,
Basically it opens at 9:00am and closed at 5:00pm.
Any train or metro to snow ski resort from Beijing city centre?
No direct metro line to the ski resort. You may take part of the metro line and again you have to connect Bus 918 for the ski resort.
Good afternoon. I am planning a trip to China, which includes some business. Can you advise the best way/method of transport to get from Beijing to Anping.
Dear Graeme,
Anping? Do you mean Anping County (安平县)in Hebei Province. If so, you can first take the train from Beijing to Hengshui (衡水). Then take a long-distance bus from Hengshui to Anping County.
Beijing – Hengshui Train: over 20 daily trains ( about 3 hours ) Hengshui – Anping Bus (71 km): buses for every 10 minutes from 05:00 to 18:00.
Just follow up my previous reply.
You have another good choice – fast and comfortable: take the long-distance bus directly from Beijing to Anping.

Hav a nice time in Beijing!
Hi Is there dog park I town and some places we can go with our dog?
As far as I know, there isn’t any dog park in the downtown Beijing ( some parks in the suburbs welcome visitors with dogs). If your dog is not big and on a leash, you can walk your puppy in your community, your community park ( not a fenced park), or some quiet and less populated areas. Trying to find out how your neighbours walk their dogs. Have a good time in Beijing!
