What to expect

LivTours Deluxe Private Paris Art Tour covers some of the world’s most important art in two of Paris’ most important museums – Louvre Museum and Musee d’Orsay. A comprehensive itinerary for any art lover, let LivTours’ expert private guide accompany you to the Louvre and Musee d’Orsay to maximize your visits and gain an understanding of some of the most impressive masterpieces.

With over 35,000 works on display, Paris’ Louvre is the largest, most influential, and most visited art museum in the world. Although it is impossible to do the Louvre justice in one day, LivTours’ will grant you intimate access to all of the highlights in just one visit.  From stunning Greek sculptures like Venus de Milo to dramatic Delacroix paintings, your expert guide will take you to all of the Louvre’s most inspiring masterpieces. One of the highlights of this Louvre Tour is the ability to spend a few moments directly in front of the world’s most famous portrait – Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

After enjoying the Louvre museum with your private guide, it’s time to head to Musee d’Orsay, housed in the majestic Orsay railway station. It was not only the Eiffel Tower that was built for the 1899 Universal Exposition but also this station. As the Orsay Station was going to be just next to two very beautiful buildings and the trains stopping at this station were electric, its metal structure was covered in limestone, complete with a glass roof. Sadly its heyday as a viable train station was short-lived and it very quickly became obsolete. By the 1970s many ideas were circulating about its future use, including a hotel, but for mainly aesthetic reasons, a museum of impressionistic art won the hearts of Parisians. Inside you’ll discover incredible works of art by Renoir, Gustave Courbet and of course, Monet.

This tour is perfect for experts and novices alike, so come experience an artistic day to remember with LivTours!

Your LivTours Deluxe Private Paris Art Tour covers some of the world’s most important in two of Paris’ most important museums – Louvre Museum and Musee d’Orsay. This is one of the most comprehensive itineraries for any art lover.

Your LivTours’ Private Paris Museums Tour will begin at the Louvre which holds a collection of over 35,000 works on display, Paris’ Louvre is the largest, most influential, and most visited art museum in the world. Although it’s impossible to do the Louvre justice in just one day, LivTours’ Louvre Tour will grant you intimate access to all of the highlights. From marvelous Greek sculptures like Venus de Milo to dramatic Delacroix paintings, your guide will take you to all of the Louvre’s most inspiring masterpieces. One of the highlights of this Louvre Tour is the ability to spend a few moments directly in front of the world’s most famous portrait – Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Your LivTours’ Louvre Museum Tour will take you to all of the most iconic paintings and sculptures housed in two of this massive museum’s three wings. To help you make the most out of your visit, your guide will highlight the most influential works from a wide range of periods including Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, the Renaissance, Neoclassicism and Romanticism. In addition to learning about the different artists and artworks, you will also hear how this 12th-century fortress and palace eventually became France’s greatest museum.

In the Ancient Egypt collections, take a close look at the sleek granite Great Sphinx of Tanis. Discovered in an Egyptian temple in the 1800s, this sphinx is considered to be the biggest and best-preserved in any Western museum.

Once you are through visiting the Egypt collections, it’s time to explore two of Ancient Greece’s globally recognizable sculptures – the armless Venus de Milo and the headless Winged Victory of Samothrace. Although both of the goddesses are missing a few parts, they are universally considered some of the best surviving original Hellenistic sculptures. Just a short walk from Venus de Milo you will get a chance to see some impressive Italian sculptures including Michelangelo’s powerful Rebellious Slave & Dying Slave as well as Canova’s passionate Cupid & Psyche.

Before beholding Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, you will take a tour of some of the Louvre’s other eye-catching canvasses. This portion of the tour will include stops by Paolo Veronese’s Wedding Feast of Cana, Jacques-Louis David’s Coronation of Napoleon, and icons of French Romanticism like Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People and Théodore Géricault’s Raft of Medusa.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa

Of all the thousands of paintings housed in the Louvre, Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa remains the most popular and enigmatic work. Supposedly the portrait of a 16th-century Italian noblewoman, this painting has bewitched billions over the years and inspired countless songs, films, and novels. Since the Mona Lisa only measures only 30 x 21 inches, it’s worth getting a lookup close to truly see the details which have rendered this a masterpiece. Your LivTour guide will shed light on how this painting became one of the most well-known works of art in the world, one worth experiencing first hand.

After a pleasant stroll through Tuileries Garden, you’ll arrive at the final stop of your tour, the incredible Musee d’Orsay museum. Quieter than the Louvre, once entering with your guide, you’ll have the space and time to not only enjoy the unique architecture of the building, but soak up some of the very best art housed inside it’s walls. Your guide will help you understand the hype behind impressionism, spend time sharing the background behind Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Bal du Moulin de al Galette by Renoir, Edouard Manets’ Olympia, and witness the birth of modern art.

With so many artistic highlights seen, it will likely be difficult to name a single favorite after this Deluxe Private Paris Art Tour.

Paris Art Tour

Everyone told us we needed to make sure to see the Musee D'Orsay along with the Louvre while in Paris. The tour we booked with LivTours was a chance to see both museums with a expert guide and the experience ended up to be one of the highlights of our trip. We saw the most important pieces in both museums in a relaxed and very enjoyable setting. Our guide was not only an excellent guide but also a very lovely person and we enjoyed talking with her about all sorts of things -- not just art! We have given this tour 5 stars but would give it more if it were possible!

Excellent tour in all ways

We really enjoyed this Art Tour offered by LivParis. There is so much to see at the Louvre that having a guide is absolutely necessary but by doing this more complette "art" tour, our guide (US born, art historian, resident in Paris for 10 years) brought ALL the masterpieces that we saw in both the Louvre and the d'Orsay to life! We were able to appreciate the various artistic styles, the influences they had on each other and heard interesting insights on each of the artists' lives - in other words, things that we wouldn't have learned about had we not taken this tour. There wasn't a moment when we weren't totally enthralled! Great tour!!

Beautiful day in Paris

You can't go to Paris and not visit the Musee d'Orsay and the Louvre. But there is just SO much to see, the whole experience can be overwhelming. That's why we were so pleased with the Art Tour we took with LivTours. Our guide, Josi, was exceptionally prepared and passionate about the masterpieces we were seeing. Her enthusiasm was definitely contagious! We had a great time and highly recommend this tour to anyone coming to Paris.

5 star tour

Montmartre Artists' Studios

A Self-Guided Walk on the Artists' Trail in Montmartre

Montmartre Walking Tour: Artists, Paintings, Studios, Canteens

Uncover montmartre’s art history with two free self-guided walks, for art enthusiasts and montmartre strollers.

Most people follow the crowds when they wander around the Montmartre area of Paris. That’s fine for many, it’s a great place to just stroll around. If you, like me, are an arts enthusiast and want to deepen your experience of being in Montmartre now, then you’ll need to find out a little about its art-history past.

Montmartre is famous for its artists but who were they and where exactly did they live and work? Where did Picasso get started? In which studio did Toulouse-Lautrec create his Moulin Rouge paintings and posters? Where did Theo and Vincent van Gogh live? Does Renoir’s famous Moulin de la Galette still exist ?

Follow my two free self-guided Montmartre artists’ studios walks and retrace the footsteps of the artists. See their workplaces and homes, stop where they ate and drank.

Clear maps guide you to home and studio, timelines connect painter with painting and place.

Montmartre has changed in the 150 or so years since the artists were here, but the street plan and some of the buildings remain. If you follow my routes, you will walk the same streets as they did.

I’ve done some art-history research and worked out a couple of circuits. The overall aim of the content is to intensify and amplify your experience of Montmartre. You have to bring holiday good-humor and some creative imagination.

As the streets of Montmartre unfold, allow the convergence of studio, artist, art and the information you will find in the site to deepen your feeling for the artistic legacy of this still unique place.

The site features two walks, they take you to every known site associated with the artists in Montmartre.

Walk 1: upper Montmartre

Walk 1 covers artists’ studios, paintings and places in the upper Montmartre area around the hill of Montmartre.

Walk 2: lower Montmartre – Pigalle

Walk 2 visits sites associated with artists in the lower Montmartre – Pigalle area.

Disabled alternatives for the two walks

I offer alternative routes for wheelchair users for walk 1 and walk 2. Because of the steep inclines in walk 1 the disabled version of this walk is a different and longer route which incorporates the funicular link to get to the top of Montmartre. Below is the walk 1 alternative.

I have an extensive dedicated page on this disabled alternative of walk 1 .

Walk 2 is less hilly and more accessible. The wheelchair alternative for the second walk only involves a short detour and then rejoins the original circuit. That short detour for walk 2 is indicated in blue below.

Where is Montmartre?

The Montmartre area is about 3.2 kilometres, about two miles, to the north of central Paris.

How do I get there?

Because of its hilly location and narrow streets, it is difficult to access Montmartre by public transport.

Both walks start at the Abbesses métro stop which is on line 12 of the Paris métro.

Line 12 can be accessed from central Paris at: Montparnasse Station, Place Concorde, the Madeleine or Saint-Lazare Station.

Emerging from the Abbesses métro straight into the busy Rue des Abbesses is one of the best ways to immediately catch the feel of contemporary Montmartre.

Bus number 80 is an alternative to the métro, stop Damrémont – Caulaincourt. You would then walk the length of Rue des Abbesses to get to the start of the routes at the Abbesses métro.

Is there a disabled version of the walks?

This is a variation of walk 1 upper Montmartre for accompanied wheelchair users. It tries—as far as is possible—to avoid the worst of Montmartre’s steepest parts. Please see above for the maps, the disabled alternative routes are shown in blue. Skirting round steps and avoiding the stiffer gradients makes for a longer and less direct route.

Walk 2 lower Montmartre – Pigalle could be followed by an accompanied disabled person almost in its entirety, there is just one minor detour at the beginning of the walk—to avoid steps.

You will find the dedicated directions and maps for the walk 1 alternative disabled route on the wheelchair route page .

I am not disabled, so it is difficult for me to judge how appropriate my circuit is. Because Montmartre is hilly and the roads are cobbled, I would say that non-motorised-wheelchair users would have to be accompanied by someone strong enough to be able to push uphill. I hope that it is a viable alternative.

How long are the walks?

Walk 1, upper Montmartre is 2.7 kilometres or 1.67 miles long. The route traces roughly a figure of eight. All of the important artistic sites of upper Montmartre are covered. Allow about a couple of hours to complete the circuit.

The wheelchair alternative of walk 1 upper Montmartre is considerably longer at 4.15 kilometres or 2.57 miles; this is because it follows a quite different track to avoid steep inclines and stairs.

Walk 2, lower Montmartre – Pigalle is 2,2 kilometres or 1,4 miles long.

The wheelchair alternative of walk 2 lower Montmartre – Pigalle is also 2.2 kilometres or 1.4 miles.

How difficult are the walks?

The upper Montmartre circuit is hilly with some steep sections and cobbles.

Walk 1 involves some climbing and there are some short steep sections. Most of the route is over cobbles. You climb about 300 feet. The combination of steepness and cobbles make it more challenging than its 2.7 kilometres or 1.67 mile length would suggest.

The disabled alternative route for walk 1 incorporates the funicular link to get to the top of Montmartre but also runs over cobbles and includes some moderate inclines.

No matter which way you approach it the upper Montmartre area remains hilly and involves an effort.

Walk 2 is less challenging; there are slopes but they are more gradual.

Can I visit any of the sites?

Many of the points visited on both walks are now private residences or workplaces and cannot be visited. Please be discreet when taking photographs and not disturb the people who live or work there.

The numbered sites on the tour that can be visited are:

Point 1 Père Azon – Le Relais de la Butte, a restaurant Point 4 Le Moulin de la Galette, a restaurant Point 6 La Maison Rose, a restaurant Point 8 Le Lapin Agile, a cabaret Point 9 The Montmartre Museum Point 13 Studio 28, a cinema Point 14 Métro Abbesses, the Art Nouveau public entrance to the Paris métro line 12.

Point 8 Moulin, Rouge a cabaret show.

Which of the two walks is the more scenic?

Walk 1, the upper Montmartre circuit, is the most scenic. It takes you close to, but does not include, the Sacre Coeur church.

Walk 2 the lower Montmartre – Pigalle route features Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. I look in detail at many of their major works. This is a less scenic walk—although we do pass the Moulin Rouge—but worth the detour especially if you like Lautrec and Degas and want to see where they lived and worked.

Also in walk 2 we forget about painters for a moment and skip forward a generation to take in the 1920s Paris jazz scene because it happened in this area too.

Where do the walks walks start?

Both walks start at the Abbesses métro which is the best station for getting to Montmartre.

I want to find out about the history of Montmartre and the art history of the period, where do I find that?

The upper Montmartre circuit can be approached just as a pleasant walk featuring interesting and picturesque sites.

Those of you interested in history and art history can browse the more detailed contextual information that I have put together. These include: the History and culture of Montmartre , the Commune , the Salon system , influences on Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon . I look briefly at late 19th century gender stereotypes in French society on my working women and bourgeois men page.

Walk 2 features some extended appreciation of the work of Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec as well as Picasso and Braque’s early cubist works. Most of this more detailed material reflects conventional views from authoritative sources. I do also throw in some personal interpretation because that is part of the fun of looking at art.

Montmartre is small but all of the works I feature were created here by artists who lived and worked in this pressure-cooker art hotspot. Modern Montmartre lives on their legacy. They walked these very streets; so don’t follow the crowds, follow in their footsteps and catch their spirit.

Hard to sign up but excellent tour

The best tour!! Easy to follow, a great walk in the city and amazing street art. LOVED IT 100%

Super visite et support très pratique

Belle balade dans le 13eme avec de belles œuvres. Explications de qualité Peut être un peu courte à mon goût Je recommande tout de même

Haven't done the tour, just trying out

Great tour, good explanations, will come back for more!

Bien, mais un peu court

Superbe balade très bien guidée

Just the right level of detail. Clear and interesting. I loved it!

very informative, recommend

très beau et super! Margaux 8 ans.

I loved this self-guided tour of street art in the 13th! Start whenever you want, pause and resume at any time. Informative and interesting.

Fantastic tour. Very clear and interesting.

Très chouette visite un gros bémol:il faut être ingénieur pour pouvoir accéder à l’application

Sublime et les explications qui vont bien. C’était parfait

Très chouette parcours !

Très joli. On aurait aimé un peu plus long

super top merci! Les commentaires apportent un vrai plus à la visite.

Balade courte et sympathique

Very good helpdesk

Very Nice helpdesk !!! Cool and calm tour through local Paris

Paris itinerary for art lovers - museum guide

I spent quite a lot of time in Paris wandering around museums and galleries and felt truly spoilt for choice.

An art-themes trip to Paris is ideal because it has such a wealth of world-class museums and galleries of every conceivable type to enjoy.

For art lovers, that abundance can be quite overwhelming at first, which is why I made this itinerary.

It narrows down the vast selection and takes you to the must-see, famous museums, as well as to a selection of small galleries and more unique art spaces.

Most museums and galleries in this guide are within reasonable walking distance from each other, or you can take the metro if you prefer.

Get a map of the places in this guide

Generally, you want to book tickets in advance for most museums in Paris. Skip-the-line tickets are always recommended, they’ll save you quite a bit of time. For the big museums, it’s also a good idea to book a tour , to make sure you get to see all the important highlights.

Day 1: Centre Pompidou, Le Marais galleries, Picasso Museum

Centre pompidou.

Centre Pompidou

Start your art-themed visit to Paris at the iconic Centre Pompidou , one of the most popular art spaces in the world.

It’s an impressive building that’s hard to miss in the centre of Paris, known for its “inside-out” architecture, designed by architects Rogers + Piano.

Inside, you’ll discover modern and contemporary art, with a huge collection spanning various art movements such as Cubism, Surrealism, and Pop Art, as well as very recent works of art from international artists.

I personally spent no less than 4 hours at Centre Pompidou on my last visit to Paris. It was tiring but very satisfying. If you’re short on time, however, you can easily see the collection highlights in about 2 hours.

Some of the most famous artists whose masterpieces you can find at Centre Pompidou include Frida Kahlo, Marc Chagall, Vassily Kandinsky, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Piet Mondrian, Joan Miró, and many more.

Alongside the well-known artworks, you’ll also find contemporary, thought-provoking exhibitions.

  • Entry tickets
  • Private tour

Le Marais district galleries

Centre Pompidou is close to the art hub of Le Marais, a little paradise of contemporary art galleries in the centre of Paris.

I created a self-guided walk that takes you through the top galleries in Le Marais.

You can also get an offline map of this walk .

For these galleries there’s no need to book ahead, they usually accept walk-ins, so you can explore freely.

This part of the city also has plenty of cafes and restaurants, so it’s ideal if you want to stop on the way for some coffee, a bite to eat, and some rest.

Picasso Museum

After walking around and getting some rest, head to the Picasso Museum , located in Le Marais.

This museum is a tribute to Pablo Picasso and has an extensive collection of his paintings, sculptures, and drawings.

You’ll see how Picasso developed as an artist, view some of his famous masterpieces, and learn about his creative process.

Day 2: The Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Pinault Collection

The Louvre Museum

The world-famous Louvre is a bucket list item on any visit to Paris.

Located in a magnificent former palace, the Louver is the largest museum in the world.

It has a truly remarkable range of art from the likes of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Rembrandt, and with a range of styles, from ancient Egypt to the Renaissance period.

The collection includes 2 of the most famous artworks in the world, the Mona Lisa and Venus de Milo.

My best tip is not to expect to be able to see everything in one day. You really want to plan ahead and decide what to focus on during your Louvre visit. It’s easy to get lost and lose track of time in such a huge museum.

Skip-the-line tickets are essential, as the lines can be very long.

  • Group tour – Guarantee you see all the major highlights.
  • Private tour – Tailored to your own interests.

Musée d’Orsay

Musée d'Orsay

Our next stop is within a short walking distance from the Louvre. It is one of the top 3 must-see museums in Paris (alongside the Louvre and Pompidou), and it’s been a personal favourite of mine for many years.

Housed in a gorgeous former Beaux-Arts railway station, Musée d’Orsay is the best place to see Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and Art Nouveau.

You’ll find some well-known and iconic artworks, such as Water Lilies by Monet, Bal du moulin de la Galette by Renoir, The Ballet Class by Degas, Starry Night by Van Gogh, and Arearea by Gauguin.

Apart from the paintings, I love the Art Nouveau furniture collection at Musée d’Orsay, a beautiful display of decorative arts and interiors.

Skip-the-line tickets are highly recommended because it’s a very popular museum.

Pinault Collection

Pinault Collection

The final art space today is a relatively new museum of contemporary art, the Pinault Collection .

It’s located inside a very unique circular building, the Bourse de Commerce, formerly the stock market.

This historic building has the most magnificent dome; before I even saw any of the exhibitions I found myself taking endless pictures of the dome.

The exhibitions are based on the private art collection of François Pinault, with temporary exhibitions, events and workshops.

It has a strong focus on contemporary art of all kinds. You can expect eclectic art forms, including installation, multimedia art, and sculpture. Some of the themes are trendy, some are thought-provoking.

  • Guided tours: The Pinault Collection offers tours in English on Saturdays.

Day 3: Rodin Museum, Musée de l’Orangerie, Petit Palais

At this point, you’ve already been to the most important museums in Paris, and have had a chance to see modern, contemporary, and traditional art.

On the third day, you’ll visit some more famous museums in Paris.

Rodin Museum

Begin the third day at the Rodin Museum , dedicated to the work of celebrated French sculptor Auguste Rodin.

The museum has indoor galleries and charming outdoor spaces, where you can see some iconic sculptures you’ll probably recognise, such as “The Thinker” and “The Kiss.”

  • Guided tours

Musée de l’Orangerie

Next, visit the Musée de l’Orangerie , in the lovely Tuileries Gardens.

This museum is famous for displaying Claude Monet’s water lily paintings in special, oval rooms. These are purpose-built rooms that make the experience truly unique.

You’ll also find more Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artworks by well-known artists, such as Renoir, Cézanne, and Modigliani, alongside lesser-known artists.

  • Guided tour

Petit Palais

Petit Palais

Our last stop for today is Petit Palais , a museum housed in a magnificent building located close to Champs-Élysées.

This museum is like an extended lesson in the history of art; it has paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts in a diverse range of styles, from masterpieces by Paul Cézanne and Rembrandt to a collection of medieval art.

  • Entry tickets: Free entry.

Day 4: Louis Vuitton Foundation, Musée Marmottan Monet

On the final day of this Parisian art itinerary, we venture outside of the city centre, to see some art spaces that are well worth visiting.

The Louis Vuitton Foundation

The Louis Vuitton Foundation

Our first stop is an architectural gem in a lovely green park. It features excellent contemporary art exhibitions.

There’s no permanent collection, only temporary exhibitions, so you want to check what’s on in advance.

The museum was designed by Frank Gehry and resembles a massive glass ship. Beyond the exhibitions, the extraordinary architecture is a good reason to take the trip outside the city centre and experience this art space.

You can find out more in my full review of my visit to the Louis Vuitton Foundation .

  • Guided tours: Members of staff are happy to chat with you and answer questions during your visit.

Musée Marmottan Monet

Conclude your art-themed trip in Paris at the Musée Marmottan Monet , dedicated to the art of the famous Impressionist painter, Claude Monet, alongside some other impressionist artists, such as Renoir, Degas, and Caillebot.

The museum has both permanent and temporary exhibitions and is located in a peaceful, elegant townhouse.

More things to do in Paris for art lovers

In this 4-day itinerary, we’ve covered the top museums in Paris, plus some special art spaces and galleries, mostly in the city centre.

If you have more time to spend in Paris, here are some extra recommendations for art lovers:

Street art in Paris

Paris is a street art paradise, with some excellent hubs, including Belleville and Montmartre .

I went on a Belleville street art tour and really enjoyed it.

Parisian architecture gems

Paris opera interior

If you love architecture, you’ll definitely enjoy the gorgeous buildings all around Paris.

I highly recommend visiting the old opera house (Palais Garnier). It’s simply stunning.

There are a couple of ways to visit the interior and I wrote a full guide about it: How to visit the Paris opera house .

Another warm recommendation for architecture lovers: Take an Art Nouveau tour to see some of the city’s gems.

Some buildings are outside the centre, which is why I suggest you take a tour. I created a self-guided Art Nouveau walk and you can also book a guided walk that covers even more buildings.

A day trip to Giverny

If you can’t get enough of Claude Monet, take a trip outside of Paris to Giverny to see his family house at Monet’s House & Museum .

Paris museum pass

You can use a museum pass in Paris to save money on entrance fees. There are several options, with the Paris Museum Pass (2, 4, Or 6 Days) being the most comprehensive. I also wrote a guide on how to choose and use a museum pass in Paris with more information and helpful tips.

Paris Street Art: Dive Deep with this Thorough Guide

Do a deep dive into Paris street art and you’ll find a messy collage of color, culture and cheek. This tour of street art in Paris will show you four neighborhoods (and a few extra spots) for finding the best concentration of murals and graffiti in the city.

Paris street art: Peanuts mural in the 11th arrondissement

Why Paris Street Art is So Unique

According to Wide Walls , street art in Paris is very specific to the city’s history. In Bushwick New York, street art and graffiti evolved out of the hip hop movement. However in Paris, the seeds were planted during the avant garde period in the 1960’s. Avant garde artists were using posters and decollage techniques for their works. This evolved into a street art form that employs stickers and paper “paste-ups” which even today are regularly plastered all over the city.

Stenciling is another street art form popularized in Paris. The artist Blek le Rat starting using stencils in Paris in the 1980’s. He was inspired by the stenciling technique deployed by Italy’s fascist propaganda machine during World War II. Blek le Rat stenciled a series of life sized rats all over the Paris and a new art form was born.

(Diversion: there are many exterminator shops all over central Paris which feature taxidermied rats in their display windows. What’s with Paris and the rats?)

The world famous street artist Banksy was so inspired by Blek le Rat that he adopted stenciling for his works which feature ironic pranks and anti-capitalist messages. Jef Aerosol , an artist from Lille France, also adopted the form, using stencils to profile pop culture characters.

As with many cities, the Parisian street art scene is still operating in a grey area between legal and illegal. Some of the large scale murals in the 13th Arrondissement are legally commissioned and Mur Oberkampf has an ongoing program in the 11th. However, you will find plenty of street art in Paris that is as furtively painted as the grittiest alleyway in  London’s Brick Lane . So, while you are admiring the large murals, keep a keen eye out for those guerrilla paste-ups and stencils because they will give you a lesson on Paris street art history.

Four Neighborhoods for Finding Street Art in Paris

There is street art all over Paris but there are two neighborhoods in particular with a well established concentration of it. They include the 13th Arrondissement and the Belleville (adjacent to the 11th Arrondissement). In addition, there are several canal areas which are up and coming, including the Saint-Denis and Canal de l’Ourcq.

Street art in Paris Belleville. Colorful batik figures By Toz FBC

Street Art Tour of the Belleville & 11th Arrondissement

The Belleville/11th is probably the best neighborhood to explore street art in Paris. Like so many great street art areas, including  San Francisco’s Mission or Chicago’s Pilsen , it’s a working class immigrant neighborhood that is battling gentrification. Neighborhoods like this attract artists who need cheap lodging and older buildings to practice on. The Belleville is also great because you’ll find a mix of both commissioned pieces and guerilla works.

If you want to wander the neighborhood on your own, the street art map below will show you the key streets. However, I recommend that you take a street art tour with Street Art Paris . It was the best €15 I spent in Paris (not counting the cheese). They provide a thorough tour of the neighborhood with a well informed guide.

Belleville Paris street art mural by Txemy

Look carefully at this piece by Txemy and you’ll see several different kinds of spray techniques. There is also a little mosaic by Paris street artist Space Invader tucked into the upper right corner.

Street art int he 11th arr of Paris

This piece typifies the unique cultural history of Parisian street art. You see a mash-up of spray, paint, stickers and stencils. The red hearts have been spread all over Paris by a collective called the Peace and Love Crew. The yellow and turquoise portrait is by Zelda Bomba and the cartoony clocks are by Wekup . The creepy spider is by local artist Ardif who has created a computer generated “urban zoo” out of animals that are part organic and part steam-punk.

Paris street art stencil by Wrdsmth

These two pieces also reinforce Paris’ love affair with the stencil. The typewriter is by Wrdsmth, who you can also find in my article on LA street art . The “grow more, buy less” message also typifies anti gentrification messages that you can see throughout the 11th.

Spray paint can mural Paris 11th Arrondissement

The Parc de Belleville sits on a hill with great views overlooking Paris. There is a series of pilings with whimsical portraits and more murals on the sports field below.

Read up on Paris with this epic list of 32 books set there .

Street Art Tour of the 13th Arrondissement

In the Belleville, even the commissioned pieces were on a small scale, but in the 13th Arrondissement , they’ve gone big. This XXL walls project is a collaboration between StreetArt13 and the town hall for the district. You’ll find home grown artists like Space Invader, but also worldwide talent like Vils, Shepard Fairey and Conner Harrington.

You can take a formal tour of this district, but I chose do it on my own. Most of the murals are concentrated around the strip between the Nacionale and Chevaleret metro stations and they are so huge that they are hard to miss. You can also print and take along StreetArt13’s map .

Paris mural Shepard Fairey 13th arrondissement

The muralist Shepard Fairey is best known for his Obama campaign poster but he was also commissioned to do three murals in the 13th. This one shows a bit of French patriotism. He sums up the whole ethos of street art with his website tagline:

“Manufacturing quality dissent since 1989” —- Shepard Fairey

Fairey gets around, I’ve also spotted his work in Berlin .

13th Arrondissement Paris mural Peanuts

Charles Shultz would roll over in his grave if he saw this but I love the dark parody. These murals aren’t on the StreetArt13 map but you can find them just west of the Nacionale metro station under both sides of the tracks.

Madonna mural in Paris by Inti

Once again, in the French tradition, Paris street artist C15 created a massive stencil in the 13th.

Paris mural by DFace women in blue

The artist Dface has an Andy Warhol vibe featuring characters that always seem to be skirting danger. He has two pieces in the 13th and you can also see more of his work in Reykjavik and New York City .

If you love this sort of tall and skinny street art, you should definitely explore the Silo Art trail .

The Canals of Saint-Denis

Starting in 2016, the Saint-Denis district began developing a “street art avenue” along the Saint-Denis canal. Every year they add new works and you can take a stroll to find them using this map .

(the following four images are courtesy of Tan Ban Nguyen who lives in Paris and runs the Travel to Work blog .)

Paris Saint Denis Canal murals blue cat by Marko 93

This video shows what’s up on the canals. It is courtesy of Paris Mur Mur, check out their Facebook page for regular posts featuring new works.

The Canal de l’Ourcq

The banks of the Canal de l’Orcq are filled with graffiti and murals. In recent years, various events like the “Canal’s Summer Festival” (Eté du Canal) have expanded and increased the cultural value of Canal de L’Ourcq with new commissioned works. However, according to Elisa from the World in Paris , the works turn over frequently so the art on the canal is always evolving.

Elisa recommends tackling the full twenty three kilometer canal by bike. Her self-guided bike tour  covers interesting spots like Parc de la Villette, the Géode, or the suburb of Pantin with its industrial heritage.

If you would rather walk, you can find the Eté du Canal festival commissions clustered in a couple of locations. The easiest to access is in the Bassin de la Villette (accessed from the Jaurés metro from the southwest and Porte de la Villette from the northeast). If you are willing to do a combo of RER, metro and/or taxi, you can find more murals further east in Pantin, Bobigny and Bondy. You can use this map  (or the one below) to find them. If you walk the full route between Bassin de las Villette to Bondy, it’s about seven kilometers.

Two More Spots for Urban Art in Paris

The paris sewer museum.

Remember those rats I mentioned above? Well, you can find them in the Sewer Museum. It’s just the sort of gritty urbex experience that any street art lover will want to experience. Not only will you learn about the infrastructure of Paris’ dark and wet underbelly, but they have adorable (?) murals of rats, bacterium and creepy crawlies.

Urban Art Galleries

Wide Walls has compiled a list of ten galleries and art spaces that feature urban art. Several of them are located in the 11th Arrondissement so you could work them into a self-guided tour of the neighborhood.

Paris is definitely on my bucket list, I'm going to bookmark this post! Have you been to Vitry Sur Seine? There, the street artist C215 has curated a whole city project, I'm looking forward to see that as well!

I didn't make it there. But I love C215's massive stencils!

Saturday 10th of November 2018

I love this! Paris is now definitely on my list to explore some street art. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks for the visit! Come back anytime.

Thx for this post. I had no idea that Paris had such an abundance of #streetart

Wednesday 7th of November 2018

So cool! I love street art, and Paris seems to have more elevated examples of it versus the typical graffiti (which all seems to have the same style, regardless of which country you are in)

Oasis storm the charts ahead of reunion next summer

Oasis broke up on 28 August 2009 after Liam and Noel had a backstage argument at the Rock en Seine festival in Paris. Now, 15 years later they're reuniting.

Fresh from the news they're reuniting, Oasis are storming the charts 15 years after the band broke up.

Brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher confirmed the Oasis reunion on Tuesday morning, following weeks of speculation.

Now, as fans revisit their favourite tracks ahead of 17 shows across the UK and Ireland next summer, both the band's albums and singles are seeing a surge in popularity.

Three Oasis albums are in the top five in this week's album chart, with Time Flies up to position three, (What's The Story) Morning Glory? up to four and Definitely Maybe in fifth spot.

With their debut album Definitely Maybe celebrating its 30th anniversary with a special edition this weekend, it's being tipped to hit the top album spot next week.

Read more: Are Liam and Noel actually friends again? Noel Gallagher jokes about Oasis split

Three of the band's singles have also re-entered the top 20: Don't Look Back In Anger, Wonderwall and Live Forever at positions 16, 17 and 19 respectively - the first time the band have ever had a trio of songs in the top 20 simultaneously.

Martin Talbot, chief executive officer at Official Charts, called the Gallagher brothers' achievement "mind-blowing," adding, "anyone who thought that their classic repertoire wouldn't live forever will be having to eat their words today!".
