Historical Summary: Walking Through the Pages of Time

When to visit, what is there to see, how long does a visit take, is it safe to go to pula amphiteatar-arena pula, local tips & tricks, when are the opening hours.

Oh, the Pula Amphiteatar! Also popularly known as Pula Arena. Imagine stepping into a colossal structure that has borne witness to millennia of history. Pula Arena isn’t just any ordinary attraction; it’s a living testament to the grandeur of Roman architecture and its legacy in modern-day Croatia. Frontloading this experience, one can’t help but be in awe as you stand before its mighty arches and imagine the spectacles that once graced its stage.

Constructed during the 1st century AD, this arena radiates a unique charm, enabling you to almost hear the distant cheers of a bygone era. It’s not just its age that’s impressive; the Amphiteatar is among the six largest surviving Roman arenas in the world. Plus, it’s the only one to have four side towers and all three Roman architectural orders entirely preserved.

Pula Arena Amphiteatar view from the air, overlooking the sea

The Pula Amphiteatar-Arena Pula, or the Pula Arena as it’s fondly known, has a rich tapestry of history that beckons the curious traveler. Built between 27 BC – 68 AD, it showcases the might of the Roman Empire under Emperor Vespasian’s reign, the same emperor behind Rome’s Colosseum.

Initially constructed for gladiatorial combats, it once had the capacity to accommodate over 20,000 spectators. Its purpose was as much about entertainment as it was about showcasing Roman might and discipline. Beyond the gladiatorial combats, it also played host to knight tournaments in the medieval era and, in recent times, has been the venue for film festivals, concerts, and other events.

Historical facts

The Pula Amphiteatar (often referred to as the Pula Arena) is one of the most remarkable ancient structures in the world. Here are some historical facts about the Pula Amphiteatar-Arena:

  • Roman Legacy : The Pula Arena is the only remaining Roman amphitheater with all four side towers entirely preserved. Built during the 1st century AD, it’s one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters globally.
  • Size and Capacity : At its prime, the Pula Arena could accommodate around 20,000 spectators, making it the sixth largest surviving Roman arena.
  • Purpose and Function : Like other Roman amphitheaters, the Pula Arena was primarily used for gladiator combats. Later, during the Middle Ages, it was the site for knights’ tournaments and fairs.
  • Architectural Feat : The amphitheater was constructed with local limestone. It measures about 132 meters in length and 105 meters in width. The exterior wall, constructed in limestone, stands 32 meters high.
  • Underground Chambers : Beneath the arena, there are underground passages, once used to house the gladiators and animals before the contests began. Today, this area showcases an exhibition on viticulture and olive oil production in Istria during ancient times.
  • End of Gladiatorial Fights : With the decree by Emperor Honorius in the early 5th century, gladiatorial fights were banned. This led to a shift in the amphitheater’s primary use.
  • Protective Measures : In the Middle Ages, the local residents often took stones from the Arena for their homes, thinking the structure was a work of demons due to its massive size. However, by the 13th century, the Pula Arena became property of the city, ensuring its protection.
  • World Wars & Preservation : During World War II, the Arena was used by the Italian fascist government to hold public executions. After the war, extensive restoration began, solidifying its position as one of Pula’s most treasured landmarks.
  • Modern-day Use : Today, the Pula Arena is not just a historical attraction. It’s also a popular venue for concerts, film festivals, and various other events, blending the ancient with the contemporary in a seamless manner.

The Pula Amphiteatar-Arena stands as a testament to Roman engineering, architectural brilliance, and the rich tapestry of European history. Its well-preserved state allows modern visitors a rare glimpse into the ancient world and the grandeur of Roman entertainment.

Spring (April-June) and early autumn (September-October) are ideal, offering pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Beyond the stunning exterior, the interior of the Pula Arena offers underground passages, once used by gladiators. These passages now host a regular exhibition on ancient olive oil and wine production techniques in Istria, giving visitors a dual taste of history.

Typically, a thorough exploration would take between 1.5 to 2.5 hours. However, if you’re attending an event, plan for a longer stay.

Absolutely! Pula is a safe city, and the arena itself is well-maintained with security measures in place, especially during events.

Visit Pula Arena

The Pula Arena, or Pula Amphitheater as it’s also known, is one of the largest Roman arenas in the world still standing. Explore the historic landmark during the day or attend a film screening, concert, opera or ballet at night.

Originally constructed in the first century, this arena was established under orders of Emperor Vespasian, who also ordered the construction of the larger and now world-famous Colosseum in Rome. During the 15th century, some of the limestone from Pula Arena’s interior was removed and used for local housing, but the exterior remains almost fully intact. Inspect the façade to find plenty of original features and details.

The oval exterior of the theater is characterized by tiered arches, a typical design feature in Roman amphitheaters. Take special note of the four towers integrated into the outer wall. These towers are unique to this particular amphitheater and make this structure stand out from other Roman counterparts.

Enter the arena and imagine how it would have looked in its prime, when approximately 20,000 spectators crowded into the tiered stone seating and standing gallery areas. During Roman times, this arena hosted bloody gladiatorial battles. Come here for a concert today and you’ll find it’s a lot less crowded, with audiences usually restricted to about 5,000.

Descend to the subterranean section of the theater, where gladiators and lions were kept before games. Today, the underground area houses a museum devoted to the story of olive oil and wine production in Istria during the Roman period. Browse the exhibits, which include reconstructions of ancient olive mills and presses.

One of the best times to visit the arena is during summer, when it hosts various music concerts, as well as the Pula Film Festival. Check ahead to see if any events are scheduled during your visit.

Pula Arena is open daily, although hours vary from season to season. See the exterior of the theater for free or pay an admission fee to gain access to the interior. The amphitheater is located just outside the old town walls.

The Pula Arena, an ancient Roman amphitheater, was built in the 1st century AD to accommodate a variety of entertainment spectacles, ranging from gripping gladiatorial contests to dramatic performances and even animal hunts.

Throughout its rich and storied history, the arena has served as a focal point of cultural life in the region, witnessing countless events.

Today, the Pula Arena continues to play a vital role in the cultural landscape of the city, hosting a diverse array of events. Its iconic silhouette, set against the picturesque backdrop of the Pula skyline, serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire and the rich heritage of the city.

Church and Monastery of St. Francis

The Church and Monastery of St. Francis in Pula daties back to the medieval period. It was constructed in the Romanesque style, with later Gothic additions characterized by sturdy stone walls and arches.

The church boasts intricate detailing, including ornate carvings and delicate stained glass windows, which showcase the craftsmanship of the artisans of bygone eras. But my favorite part is it’s peaceful green atrium with carefully manicured gardens.

Throughout its history, the Church and Monastery of St. Francis has played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of Pula. The monastery has served as a spiritual center for centuries, with monks residing within its walls and practicing their faith. It has weathered wars and upheavals, yet remains a symbol of resilience and continuity.

Pin it and save it for later!

Temple of Augustus

The Temple of Augustus in Pula is an ancient Roman monument built between 2 BC and 14 AD. Dedicated to the first Roman emperor, Augustus Caesar, this temple served as a focal point for religious ceremonies and civic gatherings during the Roman era.

Today, the Temple of Augustus stands as a testament to the architectural grandeur of the Roman Empire. Despite centuries of wear and tear, its Corinthian columns and intricate carvings still inspire awe. Indeed, it’s believed to be one of the most well-preserved Roman temples beyond the borders of Italy!

Pula Castle Kaštel

Pula Castle Kaštel is a historic fortress located in the heart of Pula, at the top of the hill. Built in the 17th century by the Venetians, it served as a strategic defense post to protect the city from invaders. Over the centuries, the castle has witnessed numerous conflicts and sieges, playing a crucial role in the defense of Pula.

Today, Pula Castle Kaštel offers a glimpse into the city’s military history. Climb to the top of the watchtower for panoramic views of the city and its surroundings.

Arch of the Sergii

The Arch of the Sergii in Pula is an ancient triumphal arch dating back to the 1st century BC. It was built to commemorate the military victories of the Sergii family, prominent citizens of the Roman colony of Pola, which is present-day Pula.

You can admire the intricate carvings and detailed reliefs that adorn the arch, depicting scenes of battle and victory.

Sea Gull Rocks and Pigeon’s Sea Cave

Venture into the untamed beauty of Pula’s Seagull’s Rocks, also known as Galebove Stijene, located near the Stoja neighborhood on the Muzil Peninsula.

This cliffy part of the coast is one of my favorite ‘beaches’ in Istria. You can explore it on foot, or even better explore by kayak or SUP. Here you’ll find plenty of opportunities for cliff jumping and some wild scenery, and make sure to explore the sea cave too.

While there’s an ongoing debate about whether they’re Seagull’s Rocks or Pigeon’s Rocks, historical records suggest the cave nearby is called Grotta di Colomba, or Pigeon’s Cave in Italian. The confusion stems from Croatian words for “seagull” and “pigeon” being similar.

Where the Seagull’s Rocks end, the ex-military zone of Muzil begins. This 180-hectare peninsula was off-limits to the public for over 150 years. Although demilitarized in 2007, access is still limited. If you’re feeling adventurous you can find openings in the old rusty fence and follow small forest trails left by eager explorers.

The Brijuni Islands were once the official residence of Josip Broz Tito, the former president of Yugoslavia. Known as the islands of peace and a meeting point of the Non-Aligned, the Brijuni are where Tito Here hosted numerous foreign delegations and political meetings.

As the only national park in Istria, the Brijuni Islands cover 736 square hectares and showcase a diverse array of animal species and rich flora. The islands boast a unique Safari Park on Veliki Brijun, home to a mix of Istrian and exotic fauna, including Indian elephants, llamas, zebras, and ostriches.

You’ll need to join a boat tour to explore the islands. Depending on how late you get back from Galebove Stijene, you might be better off booking this sunset tour with dinner.

Rovinj is a picturesque coastal town on Croatia’s Istrian Peninsula. Perched on a small round peninsula jutting into the Adriatic Sea, it offers breathtaking views in all directions. Make sure to enjoy them from the towering belltower of St. Euphemia’s Church

I highly recommend you  join this walking tour  led by a local guide who’s your ticket to Rovinj’s secrets. You’ll wander past landmarks like St. Euphemia’s Church and Balbi’s Arch, while your guide spills the beans on Rovinj’s Venetian history while getting insider tips on the best shops and eateries along the way.

Bale are one of the best kept secrets in Istria and I’m sure they’ll take your breath away!

This historic town is nestled amidst olive groves and vineyards, where narrow cobblestone streets surround the 15th-century Bembo castle. Bale has a unique artistic atmosphere and the town hosts various cultural events throughout the summer, including the Last Minute Open Jazz Festival.

Make sure to stroll the narrow streets and check out the Gothic-Renaissance façade of Kaštel Bembo. If you’re lucky you can catch a gig at Kamene price too!

Dinner at La Grisa in Bale

With locally sourced ingredients and a menu highlighting the region’s flavors, La Grisa is a must-visit for food lovers. The lamb here is to die for (I drove to Bale just for it more than once!) and they have a fantastic wine list too.

The restaurant feels very intimate and sophisticated and the view from the outside terrace is breathtaking. Make sure to book a table ahead of time and ask for one with a view.

The first day will be focused on Pula Old Town, but since you want to have enough time for the sea caves in the afternoon, I recommend you book this walking tour of the Old Town to make the most of your time.

On the second day you’ll have the chance to explore the surrounding towns (choose as many as you’d like) and venture deeper into Istria. The last day is focused on Cape Kamenjak and it ends with a dolphin watching dinner cruise.

By Air : Pula Airport (PUY) serves domestic and international flights, with connections to major European cities. From the airport, you can take a taxi, shuttle bus, or rent a car to reach the city center.

By Boat : Pula has a port that welcomes ferries and cruise ships from nearby islands and coastal cities. If you’re arriving by boat, you can disembark at the port and explore the city on foot or via local transport.

By Car : Pula is easily accessible by car, with well-maintained roads connecting it to other cities in Croatia and neighboring countries. If you’re driving from elsewhere in Croatia or Europe, you can follow the signs to Pula and park in one of the city’s designated parking areas.

By Public Transport : Pula is connected to other cities in Croatia by bus and train services. You can take a bus or train from major cities like Zagreb, Rijeka, or Split to reach Pula. Once in Pula, you can use local buses or taxis to get around the city.

Getting around Rovinj is easy and convenient, thanks to its compact size and well-connected transportation options. Here’s how you can navigate the town:

  • On Foot:  Pula’s charming old town is pedestrian-friendly, allowing you to explore its narrow streets, historic sites, and waterfront promenade at a leisurely pace.
  • Bicycle:  Renting a bike is a popular way to explore Pula and its surrounding areas. There are several bike rental shops in town, offering a variety of options for all ages and skill levels.
  • Public Transport:  Pula has a reliable bus service that connects the town with nearby destinations. You can purchase tickets at local kiosks or on board the bus.
  • Taxi:  Taxis are readily available in Pula and can be hailed on the street or booked in advance. They offer a convenient way to travel short distances or reach destinations outside the town center.

The best time to visit Pula is in the shoulder season which runs April till mid-June, and September to October.  This is when the crowds are manageable, the weather is warm and pleasant, and the prices more affordable. If you visit in Autumn you’ll also have the benefit of the warmer sea.

As a rule of thumb, I would advise you to avoid Croatia in the peak of summer.  It just gets too hot, too crowded, and too expensive. You’ll have a much better experience visiting in late spring or early Autumn.

Croatia is a stunning country with countless gorgeous islands, charming roman towns, beautiful nature, and delicious food. To help you plan your trip I’ve prepared a  series of Croatia travel guides.  And for an easy plug & play solution make sure to check out my Croatia itinerary (coming soon).

Jennifer Lopez cancels 2024 tour This Is Me: 'Completely heartsick and devastated'

arena tours pula

Jennifer Lopez has canceled her summer North American tour , which was to be her first in five years, weeks before she was scheduled to go on the road.

The pop star made the announcement Friday in her On The JLo fan newsletter.

"Representatives for Live Nation announced today that the Jennifer Lopez US Summer 2024 Tour 'THIS IS ME...LIVE' is canceled, citing ... 'Jennifer is taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends,'" the newsletter reads.

The statement was followed by a personal note , "A Special Message to My JLovers OnTheJLo."

"I am completely heartsick and devastated about letting you down. Please know that I wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary. I promise I will make it up to you and we will all be together again," Lopez wrote. "I love you all so much. Until next time..."

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

USA TODAY has reached out to Live Nation for comment.

Lopez's first show of the tour had been slated for June 26 in Orlando, Florida.

This Is Me... Live announcement comes after seven tour dates were canceled

The announcement comes weeks after several shows on the tour were canceled without explanation. According to Ticketmaster, Lopez's scheduled performances in Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans; Raleigh, North Carolina; Atlanta; Houston; Cleveland and Tampa, Florida would no longer take place.

"Unfortunately, the event organizer has had to cancel your event," the message for those pages reads.

This is Me...Live was a 30-date arena tour that was going to feature Lopez's chart-breakers and classic hits from her discography, like songs "On The Floor," "Let's Get Loud" and "Jenny from the Block." Her most recent tour in 2019, the It's My Party tour, sold out venues across the country.

The tour was in support of her new album, “This is Me … Now,” which released in February. The record was accompanied by an Amazon Prime musical movie, “ This is Me … Now: A Love Story ."

Speaking to USA TODAY earlier this year about "This is Me ... Now" possibly being her swan song, Lopez said, "This was going to be the quintessential thing I have been searching for and wanted to say about love."

"I’ve been on this search for so long, since people first met me and my first record came out and even before that in my first movie role, where I’ve been on this journey trying to figure this thing out for myself. This (album) kind of closed the loop in a way,” she said. “It captures this moment to really say the things I want to say about love, and that is that true love does exist and some things are forever. Please don’t give up on that because that’s all that matters in life … love.”'

Bennifer timeline: Their love story spans two decades, two engagements

Separate outings have fueled speculation about marriage with Ben Affleck

Lopez's announcement also comes amid widespread speculation about her marriage of nearly two years to Ben Affleck.

After various media reports suggested Lopez and Affleck may no longer be living together, the Hollywood A-List couple has been increasingly under the microscope, with media prying over their whereabouts and whether both are still wearing their rings.

On May 16, Lopez and Affleck were photographed together for the first time in over a month, with each spotted wearing their respective wedding rings.

The two were engaged to each other twice: first in 2002 then again in 2021. The couple got married in a late-night ceremony in Las Vegas on July 16, 2022, which Lopez called "the best possible wedding we could have imagined."

This is the second marriage for Affleck and the fourth for Lopez.

Tour refunds for JLo tickets

Tickets will automatically be refunded, according to the newsletter.

Fans who purchased from third-party sites such as SeatGeek, StubHub and VividSeats should reach out to those websites for refunds.

The Black Keys Split With Managers Following Arena Tour Cancellation

The band is no longer represented by Irving Azoff and Steve Moir, who have co-managed the group since 2021.

By Chris Eggertsen

Chris Eggertsen

The Black Keys

The Black Keys has parted ways with its managers, Irving Azoff and Steve Moir , following the abrupt cancellation of the band’s arena tour in North America late last month.

First reported by the New York Times , a representative for Azoff has confirmed the split, telling Billboard it was an “amicable parting.” A representative for The Black Keys declined to comment. Moir did not respond to a request for comment by press time.

The Black Keys Cancel North American Leg of International Players Tour

Trending on billboard.

Two days later, the band — which consists of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney — posted an update on X (formerly Twitter) writing that they had “decided,” following a run of shows in the United Kingdom and Europe, “to make some changes to the North American leg of the International Players Tour that will enable us to offer a similarly exciting, intimate experience for both fans and the band, and will be announcing a revised set of dates shortly.” No other reason was given for the cancellation of the arena dates, though it has been widely speculated that slow ticket sales were to blame.

The Black Keys signed with Azoff and Moir in 2021 after parting with their longtime manager, John Peets at Q Prime South.

As Black Keys fans await the promised rescheduled dates and/or refunds for the arena shows, a single North American date remains on the band’s official website: a July 6 performance at NASCAR Chicago Street Race.

The cancellation of the Keys’ arena dates is the second-profile tour cancellation to go down in recent weeks. On Friday (May 31), Live Nation announced that Jennifer Lopez had canceled her This Is Me…Live Tour just a month before it was set to kick off in Orlando, Fla. The touring giant stated that the superstar was “taking time off to be with her children, family and close friends.” Lopez later released her own statement saying that she was “completely heartsick” over the cancellation and that she “wouldn’t do this if I didn’t feel that it was absolutely necessary.”

The Black Keys Split With Management Team After Arena Tour Cancellation

By Emily Zemler

Emily Zemler

The Black Keys have parted ways with their management team, Irving Azoff and Steve Moir of Full Stop Management, following the last-minute cancellation of their North American arena tour last month. A representative for Azoff confirmed the split to  Billboard , saying it was an “amicable parting.”

The rock band initially signed with Azoff and Moir in 2021 after leaving their longtime manager John Peets at Q Prime South. The news of the split was initially reported by The New York Times in an article about recent high-profile tour cancellations that also focused on Jennifer Lopez .

In late May, the Black Keys abruptly canceled  the upcoming North American leg of their International Players Tour , with dates for the jaunt abruptly erased without explanation from the band’s social media pages and official website. The trek was set to begin Sept. 17 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and run through Nov. 12 in Detroit.

The Black Keys’  official website  scrubbed all of the band’s upcoming tour dates except for a single one-off show, a July 6 gig at Chicago’s NASCAR Street Race. Band members Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney later confirmed they were “alive and well,” and that the North American tour was scrapped in order to make it more like those smaller European gigs.
