Montana Guided Elk Hunting

archery elk hunting trips

These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips, elk season is what they’ve been waiting for!

Montana Elk

Our elk herds are in better shape today than they have been in thirty years! Our hunting areas also support ample populations of whitetail and mule deer and color phase black bear, increasing the chances of success across species. This terrain is more challenging to hunt elk in, no doubt, no flat land here. We utilize our horses to search the front range of the Bob Marshall for elk. With exclusive access in the areas where we hunt, Swan Mountain Outfitters is able to offer archery elk hunters perhaps one of the most unique and best opportunities to bag an elk of a lifetime with a bow. As the season progresses, migration of elk begins and affords our late season elk hunters an opportunity to bag an elk at lower altitudes.

Our Montana Guided Elk Hunts

All of our Montana elk hunts require more or less rigor and we offer elk hunting in three distinct seasons:

  • Our season starts with archery elk hunting.
  • We then offer rifle elk hunts in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The Bob Marshall is one of the few areas in the country where you can rifle hunt elk during the rut.
  • Our last hunting season is during the general Montana hunting season.

We offer combination hunts in which you can target mule deer, whitetail, and bear as well. Some of our hunters have snagged a wolf tag too! Many of our elk hunters bring both their rifle and bow. Multi weapon hunts are popular with elk hunters that like to maximize their opportunity.

We like to get deep into the back country and utilize spike camps. This can get us in closer proximity to the elk for opening day. This spike camp strategy has produced many harvested elk in seasons past, but does lack the comforts of traditional hunting camps.

Not sure you can handle the physical rigor of our Montana wilderness elk hunting? You might consider a later season guided elk hunt, when mother nature brings the elk out of the high country and into proximity of our base camp. The hours in the saddle and elevation gained in hiking is lessened, and the base camp has a few more modern amenities than our upper camp and spike camps. These are good first time elk hunts for youth elk hunters. An extra bonus is that our base camp is in the heart of whitetail deer territory for hunters looking to combination hunt.

Archery Elk

Archery hunting elk, requiring close proximity to the animal, is, by its very nature, quite different from hunting these animals using a rifle. Successful archery hunts require excellent calling abilities and guides who know the difference between techniques utilized for archery versus rifle hunts.

Archery hunts necessitate minimizing over exposure of hunting areas and minimizing scent control and noise. For these reasons, we only take two hunters to each of our “archery only” designated areas.

We have experimented with various styles of guided archery elk hunts and we believe we have landed upon an offering that delivers the ultimate archery elk hunting experience in Montana. Even though the season is actually longer, we focus solely on the time frame surrounding the rut to maximize our opportunity: we offer three sessions of 7-day archery only hunts. Note that this boils down to 5 days of solid hunting as the rest of the time is spent getting to and from the area. We employ two-on-one guiding as we have found it is the best way to maximize our hunters opportunities to be successful.

With limited space, our archery elk hunts are the first to book up. We typically have been booked two years in advance, so don’t wait!

Archery Elk

All archery hunts take place on private ranches with excellent accommodations and meals. The terrain varies from timbered slopes to open meadows and stands of aspen. Our standard hunter to guide ratio is 2:1. We have had success with all methods of hunting elk and may use one of several methods to put you in bow range of your elk. If conditions are conducive our experienced guides will bugle or cow call to enrage or tempt a bull into range. We have also been successful guiding our hunters using the spot and stalk method. If weather conditions are hot and dry, we often hunt from tree stands or ground blinds near natural watering holes. All of our guides are experienced and accomplished bowhunters themselves that know what you need and expect from a bowhunt.

Our rifle elk hunts range from high country ranch hunts where home is a sturdy wall tent, to migration hunts on private ranches at 6,000 feet. We pick and choose our hunting areas according to the seasonal movements of the elk to help insure higher hunter success. We recognize that a good first season hunting area may not be as high quality during the third season and so we select our camps accordingly – we take great pride in our rifle elk hunting and have quality leases, cooks and guides. We believe we can arrange a hunt that will work for you. Many of our elk areas also offer excellent mule deer hunting as well. Just let us know if you also want to put in for a mule deer permit.

Guided hunts include all meals and lodging. Hunter to guide ratio is 2:1 for archery and rifle hunts.

Season generally runs late-August to late-September for archery. Archery elk tags can be purchased over the counter.

Rifle Seasons are in October and November.

All deer tags are currently on a draw system. Application deadline is the first week of April.

ARCHERY ELK HUNTS

Our archery elk hunts take place in the Madison Range in southwest Montana.  The pack trip into camp requires a six-hour ride by saddle horse. These are eight day expeditions.  The first and the last day of the trip are travel days and there are six days of semi-guided hunting in-between. The cost of the hunt is $3600. per guest.

Season Dates

The dates of our archery elk hunts coincide with the rut which begins in early September and runs through the cow’s second heat in mid-October. Montana’s 2024 archery season runs from September 7th through October 20th.

Hunting Bugling Bulls with a Bow

While the challenge is great in hunting elk with a bow, so are the rewards.  The necessity of getting close enough to use a bow effectively provides for a degree of contact with the animal rarely experienced on a rifle hunt.

Normally as elusive as ghosts, elk are easier to locate during the breeding season because they are so vocal.  Once located, countless hours can be spent observing their daily routine from a proximity that allows you to smell their sweet musky odor and hear them call to each other.

The bull’s bugling is one of nature’s most exquisite sounds.  At a distance it is melodic and haunting; up close it is a powerful challenge that will make your heart race. Listening to bugling bulls in the midst of one of creation’s original mountain masterpieces is an extraordinary experience.  It is at the very heart of why we hunt.

Hunter Success

Getting close to a big game animal in a wilderness environment and taking it with bow and arrow is a very challenging task.  Elk are intelligent animals with extremely keen senses.  They are the product of countless generations of successful predator avoidance.  Shooting them with a rifle is one thing, taking them with a bow from close range, quite another.

Through the years better than eighty percent of our archery elk hunt clients have had the opportunity for reasonable shots at one or more good bulls during their hunt with us.  Actual harvest statistics vary greatly from year to year and from hunt to hunt. Bowhunters who are in good physical condition and have significant elk hunting experience have a good chance of taking a bull on this hunt.

Archery Elk Hunts

These ranches consist of foothills and rugged mountain country with elevation ranging up to 12,500 feet. Tree cover is provided by ponderosa pine, spruce, large quaking aspen groves, with parks and meadows mixed in.

This area is historically noted for large herds of free ranging elk. An archery elk hunt is truly one of the most exciting hunts available.

All of our guides have years of experience calling in bulls during the rut. There is no greater thrill than having a bull respond to a call and come in on the fight. This hunt takes place during the rut in September and our shot opportunity is 80%. This is a fair chase hunt – no high fences.

We provide a full-service hunt, which consists of meals, lodging, 2×1 guide service and game care.

If any hunter would like to upgrade to a 1×1 there will be an additional $1,000 cost. We offer two 5-day or 7-day hunts in September. Cost for extra hunting days is $500 per day.

Combination Hunts

WHAT OUR HUNTERS SAY

Dustin, Rich and the entire Big Horn Outfitters team work their butts off to provide the best hunting experience for each client. These guys know where the animals are at, what they are doing and will work tirelessly to make sure every hunter gets an opportunity. When your hunt is over the lodging, food and accommodations are all second to none. I can't recommend these guys enough to anyone looking for a high-quality Western hunt.

Justin Zarr

I have been on several guided hunts before and have been fortunate enough to have taken game on all of them. This hunt, by far, was my most successful. Big Horn Outfitters is a First Class operation from start to finish. Unmatched hospitality, great food, guide knowledge, and most importantly the game was plentiful and of great quality. Big Horn Outfitters treated us like family and went out of their way to ensure we had a great experience.

I can’t say enough about the experience I had with Big Horn Outfitters. My partner and I each shot a bull with our bows, but far more important was the great time we had doing it. The guides were hard working, enjoyable to be with and run a first class operation in every way. I have been on many western hunts over the last 20 years and Big Horn Outfitters is by far the best I have ever experienced. I highly recommend them!

McNeice Outfitting

McNeice Outfitting Ltd.

The premier Elk and Whitetail combination ranch hunt in Canada.

McNeice Outfitting Ltd.

McNeice Outfitting Ltd. – The premier Elk and Whitetail combination ranch hunt in Canada located just off the pristine eastern slopes of the majestic Rocky Mountains.

McNeice Outfitting Ltd. operates what we believe to be the premier Elk and Whitetail combination ranch hunt in Canada. Located just off the pristine eastern slopes of the majestic Rocky Mountains, hunters are greeted to world-class scenery and magnificent elk and deer!

The elk hunting opportunities presented are truly first class due to the large herd which inhabits the immediate area. This resident herd is 400-500 strong and lives within 7-8 miles of the ranch cabin from which we hunt. Multiple crop fields, ample bedding areas, and almost zero predation, create a habitat that these elk live in year round. Behavior is patterned and we work hard to create opportunity as the elk move from their feeding areas, to their bedding locations and vice versa.

Our archery hunts take place in September and October, during the peak of the rut, with hunters enjoying almost 100% shot opportunity. During this time smaller groups of elk are found thoughout the ranch. Numbers range from a dozen or so, to upwards of 100, as the herd bulls in the 320 – 370 class, run ragged, as they try to keep their harem from other bulls in their quest to produce as many of their offspring as possible. Often several five and six point satellite bulls are found within these herds, which offer fantastic opportunities as well. Guides ply their skills as they call, spot and stalk, and use blinds in high travel corridors to put our clients in positions from which they have shots in the 20 – 60 yard range.  If a combo hunt including whitetail or Mule deer is desired, we have a limited number of archery allocations, which we offer our clients.

Rifle season for elk on the ranch starts the last week of October, and continues until the end of November. This is an exciting time as often the bulls we hunt are in large herds of 200 animals! This hunt is predominantly spot and stalk although we have implemented the use of bale blinds, with great success. These hunts are often sold out several years in advance and for good reason! We limit the numbers of hunters on the land, which we hunt, to ensure the highest quality hunt possible. Our clients have told us many times; we simply have more elk, and bulls of high quality, then our competitors.

Our rifle deer season occurs during the month of November, with most hunters taking home bucks in the 145 – 160 class. Having said that, our area has produced bucks into the 180 range! Spot and stalk, rattling, and the use of bale blinds are the preferred methods of hunting. While hunting the ranch clients usually see over 100 whitetail and 40 – 60 mule deer each day.  Once the rut starts, it is exciting as the bucks move freely throughout the day creating a super fun hunt.

Deer Hunting at McNeice Outfitting Ltd.

While hunting, the ranch clients usually see over 100 whitetail and 20 – 30 mule deer each day.  Once the rut starts, it is exciting as the bucks move freely throughout the day creating a super fun hunt.

Elk Hunting at McNeice Outfitting Ltd.

The elk hunting opportunities presented are truly first class, with unparalleled opportunities due to the large herd which inhabits the immediate area in which we hunt.

Premier Northern Coyote hunts

Abundant with beautiful pelts, this predator provides an exciting challenge for hunting while maintaining a healthy population for the local ranching operations.

McNeice Outfitting Ltd.

Our team at McNeice Outfitting Ltd. is truly a top-notch group who are committed to providing excellence in the field, on the road, or within the accommodations we provide.  Several of our senior guides have guided on this ranch and the immediate area for over twenty years, and all of our guides have lifelong experience in hunting elk and whitetail.  They know every little nook and cranny on the ranch, and more importantly, they know the animals, which we hunt!  They are serious hunters who put animals on the ground using ethical and moral values and techniques.  Off the field, the group creates a friendly, relaxed atmosphere, which is dedicated to creating a positive experience for our clients.  Many a tale and perhaps the odd lie, are told around the dinner table, which will be full of home cooked table fare prepared by our accomplished cook.  Folks come into the camp as clients, and we are proud to say, leave, as friends.

This outfit is a great option for all hunters of all ages and physical abilities.  We have had clients pushing 90 years of age, have success on great quality animals.  On the same token we have had many a father have their sons harvest their first animal while on our ranch!  We pride ourselves on being a decent and honest outfit, which produces world class hunting experiences to our clients!

Testimonials

I came here as a guest with expectations and an open mind. I found everyone more then helpful to make me feel at home and make my stay comfortable. The food was excellent! The hunting was even better then expected! Jay and Don took great care of me in the woods. I have had a great time and will be back soon. I feel like I have made memories, gained experience, and made new friends.  I am glad I came!

Vern and the team – We came here for a awesome father/son adventure, and it did not disappoint! I’m so happy that you and Donnie gave Will and I such an amazing experience. We saw amazing wildlife and learned a ton from Donnie and the team as Will took his first buck! PS – Will said Bonnie cooks better then his Mom!

Great week!  Vern and the other guides worked hard all week and were very knowledgeable. Ranch house looks great and was both comfortable and convenient. Bonnie was great and the food was fabulous. The elk were plentiful and I had multiple opportunities. Thanks again for a great week.

Thank you so very much for an absolutely unforgettable trip. Great friends, great food, and spectacular memories, all that, plus my first ever bull elk, and my best ever whitetail a day later! This wasn’t my first time hunting with you and it will not be my last!  Already looking forward to next year!

What an awesome experience you have created for Dan, Albert and myself. Vern, your attention to detail and quick follow up on any questions, was greatly appreciated. Jay and Frank, we can’t thank you guys enough for all the time you spent glassing for us. Bonnie, we appreciated you spoiling us this week, as the meals were fantastic! Don and Vern, it’s never easy putting the hunter at the right place, at the right time, but with a lot of hard work, you guys were able to put us in front of some majestic bulls! We appreciate the memories.

Thank you so much for an outstanding week of archery elk hunting, and scenic Alberta beauty. This hunt exceeded my expectations each and every day! We were amidst elk on every single hunt. Getting within archery range of mature bull elk with 80 – 100 elk is nearly impossible, but with great stand locations, and a lot of help from Don, this occurred almost every day of the hunt! The food was fantastic, and despite walking, climbing and crawling, many miles each day, I think I gained weight this week as a result of Bonnie’s amazing cooking. I showed up as a stranger wanting to chase elk with my bow, but am leaving with great memories of the hunt, the scenic beauty of the Canadian Rockies, and great new friends that I sincerely hope to see again in the future. Thank you Vern for a great week I won’t soon forget!

Vern, Don and Bonnie – Many thanks for having us as a part of your first season! Totally speechless with what you have provided. Monster elk and deer, land, meals, and more importantly, friendship and trust. This trip has become more enjoyable year after year, and has actually become more of a family annual trip! I cant thank you enough for you time, help and support.  Successful week – One giant 8 X 8 Bull Elk. Truly appreciated!

Vern and Crew – We are always excited when we arrive and satisfied when we leave. We enjoy the company as much as the hunting. Great laughs, great lessons, and Don always seems to be able to solve the world’s problems! Many more hunts to come!

Team McNeice! – This has been an outstanding experience for Ty and I. Frank worked hard to get us deer under 30 yards for Ty, and endured cold temperatures to do so! Great guide and hopefully we can get him with us next year.  Bonnie, Ty loved the cookies and felt like he was at home, spoiled as usual! The rest of the team is totally committed and jumped in to help. Don’s humor was the icing on the cake! Vern, Benny’s starting training for the next time he’s hunting with you, thanks again for his first Canadian Elk!

Vern and the gang were all great! Our cook Bonnie was really good too. This was my first time doing a guided deer hunt and it was even better then expected. Can’t wait to come back again!

Vern and the Gang – Anytime a hunt is over by 8:30 on the first morning, it is not just a good hunt, but a great one! The guiding and meals, were beyond great. The only issue I had is the hunt was over far too quickly! Best of luck for the rest of the season, I am going to try to return again next year.

Bonnie, Vern and Don – Thank you for the amazing experience. You treated us like family, and it was very much appreciated. World-class hunting, service and food. Vern and Don, I can’t thank you enough for putting me on world class elk! Seeing that big bull elk down took me through a roller coaster of emotions. This place is one of a kind. I look forward to coming here every year to hunt and spend time with Keith. The beauty out here is unbelievable. McNeice Outfitting has become like family to us!

Wow!! What a game changer for me. Had no idea of the amount of whitetail that I would see out here. Would have been happy with a smaller buck, but to get the five point buck that I did made my year! You guys gave first class service. Jay was patient with me and got within 150 yards of my buck. Never got my hands bloody, as Jay took care of everything. Jay also threw in some road trips as well! All food was excellent and Bonnie always put out a good spread – never left the table hungry!

Hunted a couple years with these guys, what a wonderful experience!  In elk everyday!  It was a wonderful atmosphere while hunting and at the cabin.  Would recommend these guys to anyone and everyone.

I’ve spent time in elk camp with Vern twice – each were 10 day archery hunts.  Once, my buddy had him as a guide and I simply spent time in camp with him.  The next time that I returned to that outfitter, I did so with the request that Vern be my guide.  Not only is he incredibly hard working – he’ll do everything he can to put you in front of a great critter – but he’s a phenomenal hunter and guide.  Vern knows where the animals are, what they’re likely to do, he’s a good caller, and he’ll work his tail off to make your hunt a success.

My first trip to the land that McNeice Outfitting occupies was over 7yrs ago, and from that first trip, I’m proud to say that it has become a yearly stop in my outdoor calendar.  The stunning landscape, abundance of “once-in-a-lifetime” animals and service/client care are second-to-none. Above all else, it’s the people behind McNeice Outfitting that make this place a premiere & trusted outfit.

I highly recommend this ranch for its sheer number of animals and quality people. My guide on both hunts was Vern McNeice. We didn’t kill an elk on my first hunt but I booked again the following year because of the overall experience I had encountered. We had great fun and I couldn’t wait to go back. Vern was hard working, an excellent hunter and was brutally honest in managing my expectations. We killed a big 6×6 that second hunt, which was a thrill of a lifetime!

I would encourage anyone interested in hunting with a high-quality outfit, with great guides and a tremendous outfitter, to seriously consider booking a hunt with Vern and his crew. They know their stuff, the land is full of large bulls and bucks, and nobody will work harder to give you that shot opportunity.  And during the downtime, you’ll be spending time with quality people.

I’ve had the pleasure to hunt elk with Vern and his team on three occasions and have never left disappointed. The guides are first rate professionals and know the land intimately, so it’s not if, but when. Elk and deer are abundant on the rolling foothills ranch they hunt, and a little patience ensures you’ll get the opportunity you’re seeking. I know I plan to return the first opportunity I get.

I have hunted on many trips all over the world and this hunt ranks at the top of the list. Great hunting, comfortable accommodations, beautiful country and delicious food! Knowledgeable and hard working guides. I hunted there in 2017 and although I didn’t kill an elk I saw numerous elk and had several close encounters. I passed a good bull at 50 yards since I had seen several monsters. Vern and I stalked up to a big bull and were just about in bow range when the wind shifted and he was gone! When I got home from that trip I immediately rebooked and look forward to my hunt in September 2019!
