The Journey is an OK SUV, but there are better options in the competitive midsize SUV class . The Journey's strengths include a potent available V6, an upscale interior, and easy-to-use available tech features. On the other hand, the base engine isn't very powerful, its fuel economy is poor, and there are no available advanced safety features.

Used 2014 Dodge Journey Performance and Interior

You should skip over the Journey's weak standard four-cylinder engine and instead buy a model with the available V6, which has much better power for daily driving. A four-speed automatic transmission comes with the four-cylinder, while the V6 has a six-speed automatic. The four-cylinder gets poor fuel economy for the class, at 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Opting for the V6 only loses you a couple mpg in city driving, while highway fuel economy stays the same. This crossover has a smooth ride over rough roads, though it's not quite as athletic as nimbler competitors when steering through turns. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available – though only in V6-powered models.

The Journey's cabin has contemporary styling with high-quality materials. The Journey is a five-seat crossover; an available third row of seats makes room for up to seven people. The front seats aren't particularly supportive, but they offer a great view of the road ahead. The second-row seats can recline for greater comfort, while the available third row is best left to children. Some models have integrated child booster seats in the second row. The outboard seats in the second row each have a full set of LATCH child-seat connectors. There's an additional upper tether anchor on the middle second-row seat, and no LATCH connectors in the third row.

The base Journey AVP is reasonably well-equipped, with features like a 4.3-inch Uconnect infotainment system, a USB port, and dual-zone air conditioning. An upgraded 8.4-inch touch screen is available, along with Bluetooth, navigation, and a rear-seat entertainment system. Many competitors offer Bluetooth as a standard feature. The standard touch screen is on the small side, so on-screen buttons can be tough to use. The larger available system is much easier to use, with sharper graphics and an intuitive interface.

Apple CarPlay on Dodge Journey, how to connect

Dodge Journey supports Apple CarPlay that lets you access your iPhone apps like iTunes, Google Maps, Waze and Spotify through the touch-screen of your vehicle. You can also make phone calls, send messages or use navigation with voice commands using Siri.

Enable CarPlay and Siri on iPhone

You must have iPhone 5 or newer device with iOS 7.1 or newer version to use Apple CarPlay on Dodge Journey. Before you begin, ensure CarPlay and Siri are enabled on your iPhone. Also, make sure that the “Press Home for Siri” option is enabled under “Siri & Search” in settings.

If you can’t see CarPlay or Siri & Search under your iPhone settings, then go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps , and make sure both CarPlay and Siri & Search are enabled.

Enable CarPlay in Journey

CarPlay must be enabled in your Cherokee’s infotainment system settings if you want it to launch automatically when you connect USB. To enable CarPlay, select Apps , then Projection Manager . Check the box next to Smartphone Device Mirroring .

Connect iPhone to Journey’s USB port

• Connect your Apple iPhone to your Dodge Journey USB port using an Apple-approved Lightning-to-USB cable.
• Touch Allow on your iPhone when prompted. This allows the use of CarPlay with your Journey while phone is locked.
• CarPlay will launch automatically on the infotainment system display.

If CarPlay does not start automatically on your Journey after you plug in the USB, then touch its icon on the launch bar on home screen of the infotainment display.

If you’re unsure which USB port supports CarPlay on your particular Journey variant, then consult your vehicle’s owners manual – or you can try plugging in the cable, one by one, in all the USB ports in dashboard and center console.

CarPlay not working on Dodge Journey

If Apple CarPlay does not start on your Journey when you plug in the USB cable and there is no CarPlay icon in the list of apps in the infotainment system, it can be due to a number of reasons:

• CarPlay is disabled in your iPhone, go to ‘Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps’ and enable both CarPlay and Siri.
• The Lightning-to-USB cable you’re using is defective. Try a different cable, preferably original Apple cable.
• The connected USB port on your Journey does not support CarPlay. Try other USB ports.
• A software glitch is responsible for the CarPlay problem. Reset the Journey’s infotainment system to its factory settings.
• You’ve an older model of Journey that does not support Apple CarPlay. Only 2019 and later model year Dodge Journey vehicles are compatible with CarPlay.

Using Siri on Dodge Journey

Siri is Apple’s voice recognition feature that helps you to concentrate on the road while driving your Journey as you can control the functions of the iPhone with voice commands.

The virtual assistant allows you to place phone calls, listen to and send text messages, play music on your iPhone, get directions and use other functions of your iPhone hands-free. You can even ask Siri for current weather conditions, stock prices or upcoming events on your calendar.

To access Siri, press and hold the talk button on the steering wheel of your Journey until you hear Siri tone.

You can also access Siri by holding down the home button located at the bottom left corner in the CarPlay app.

If the Listen for “Hey Siri” function is enabled in your iPhone device under Siri & Search settings, you can also just simply say: “Hey Siri”. After hearing the audible alert, you can begin asking Siri for assistance.

For best results when using Siri, speak clearly and reduce background noise by closing the windows and moonroof. Also, direct the air vents on dashboard so that they are not pointing towards the vehicle’s microphone.

Which Journey models support CarPlay?

2019 and later model year Dodge Journey vehicles are compatible with Apple CarPlay.

Using Google Maps on Dodge Journey with CarPlay

If your iPhone has iOS 14+ operating system, you can freely use Google Maps in Apple CarPlay on your Journey. Apple now allows the use of Google Maps in the home screen. Apple has allowed the competitor’s map service in its car application since iOS 12, but the homescreen that was newly introduced in iOS 13 in 2019 could not yet be equipped with maps. Here, users were still limited to Apple’s own map service. With iOS 14 that changes. Now CarPlay automatically selects the last service used for the view.

Using Waze navigation on Dodge Journey with CarPlay

You can use Waze navigation app in CarPlay if you have iOS 12 or higher operating system installed on your iPhone. Download and install Waze app from App Store on your iPhone, then start CarPlay on your Journey’s infotainment system display. Then touch Waze icon to launch the app.

Using Spotify on Journey

You can use Spotify to stream music on your Journey. Just install the Spotify app from App Store and its icon will appear in the infotainment display when CarPlay is active.

You can use voice commands to play music hands-free on Spotify with Siri. Just add “on Spotify” at the end so that Siri knows which service you’re referring to (e.g. “Hey, Siri, play my ‘Your Mix of the Week’ playlist on Spotify”).

Siri can play songs, artists, albums, playlists, podcasts, and more. You can also “like” music, ask what’s playing, and control playback (e.g. volume, skip song, play / pause).

Do not disturb while driving

When driving, keep your eyes on the road. A quick look at the navigation device is of course allowed in order not to miss the next junction. The “Do not disturb while driving” function can be activated so that your iPhone does not distract you with unnecessary notifications while driving your Journey. iOS 13 extends this option to CarPlay as well. On your iPhone go to Settings > Do Not Disturb, then scroll down and touch “Activate” under “Do not disturb while driving”.

Not all apps are compatible with CarPlay

If you think you can use all your iPhone apps in your Dodge Journey with CarPlay, then you’re wrong. The selection of compatible applications is limited, and you have to live with restrictions, especially with messenger apps. iMessage and WhatsApp can be controlled almost exclusively via Siri. That means you cannot see your message history, but only have new messages read out to you or even dictate messages yourself.

The following apps can be used with CarPlay on your Journey, among others: Music, Phone, News, Podcasts, Audio books, Audible, Google Maps, Sygic TomTomGO, Whatsapp, calendar, Settings, Telegram, Waze, Spotify, TuneIn, Tidal, Pandora, Youtube Music and Amazon Music.

Sort apps in CarPlay

You can sort CarPlay apps in your Journey quickly and easily through your iPhone. To do this, go to Settings > General > CarPlay , then select your vehicle under “MY CARS” . On the next screen you can rearrange app icons by touching and dragging them. You can also hide icons by touching the minus button on them.

I have searched through the Settings menu several times and I wasn’t able to find anything related to Apple CarPlay. Also, my display is different than yours. I don’t have an Apps option like what your article showed.

Stupid problem with USB ports........fixed.

The USB ports in my console suddenly stopped working. Cycling the ignition and pulling the thumb drive with music on it out and swapping it didn't work. I was starting to think it was a loose wiring problem ....the head unit in the dash simply wouldn't recognize either port.......everything else was working. The NAV and all other functions seemed fine. After considering a head unit reboot I started looking at fuses in the trunk. There are two dedicated to the center console....I figured pulling 'em couldn't hurt. Both were fine though......no sign of failure. I was starting to think I was looking at a dealer repair issue just 3 months and 800 miles into ownership.......but to my surprise when I tried one more time...... the USB suddenly was recognized. Beats me what's going on here......but puling and then putting the fuses back in seems to have fixed the problem.....some sort of reset situation. Leaves me wondering if anyone else has faced this issue. Hopefully it's not going to be a "thing" I have to deal with.  

I have a 16 scatpack. In the two years I have owned it, the USB ports have randomly stopped working 8-10 times. They work again after shutting the car off and waiting 5-10 minutes. Called Dodge and they didn't have a clue so I am living with it.  

Yeah......for me that didn't work......car sat in the garage for an hour or so before I got a chance to take a shot at fixing it. It's far from an "end of the world" issue.....but I hope I'm not dealing with it repeatedly. Pulling the only two fuses that seem even remotely related got 'em back....but I'll be damned if I know why it worked. Possibly disconnecting them from power forced the head unit to do something in response it wasn't doing while power was still available.......but hey......I freely admit......I'm only guessing and grasping for explanations.  

Several times on Windows forums I have had luck with having people disconnect power, hold down power button for 10 seconds, and let PC sit for 1/2 hour to let all caps discharge. Once they power back up, USBs are working again. Obviously not always a fix, but I'd say a handful of times for sure. It does seem to point towards there not being an intermittent connection as there would be no physical change unless the PC was very hot, and there was expansion/contraction (unlikely as issue would likely return at some point). Yup, I have a 2017 SRT 392 with 2,000 miles on it and this has happened to me a few times now. Nothing I tried would get the USB port to work again. But, everytime the next morning, it would spontaneously work again....annoying.  

I've got ours going into the shop tomorrow for the exact same thing that's happening to you folks. I get so nervous when I have to bring her to the dealer for Anything and tomorrow is not different. I just hope that they can fix it because I like using the usb drive in the media center. By any chance, do you remember the fuse numbers in the trunk that you pulled? I know that one is #38, but didn't know that there were two. Thanks in advance. :cheers:  

One is #38 but there is a second that is listed in the manual......#12 was the other. The manual doesn't say which one is the actual power here......both listed as powering the "center console". #12 lists the "dual USB" and while #38 doesn't mention the USB specifically it does list "power out let/ console media hub"..........sounds like #12 would get it done but pulling #38 too seems like the only way to be sure you're depriving it of power most completely. I'm more than a little bit bothered that it sounds like Dodge should know there is a widespread problem here and yet no one mentions a more permanent "fix". While nothing here is terribly important or difficult to do it's still not at all reasonable to expect owners to have to do this.  

Happened to mine with ~1000 miles on it. Dealer replaced the usb ports and it has worked ever since.  

I've only had my car since early April.....so I'm still at less than 1,000 miles.......(it's not my only summer driver)..... but my questions for you comes down to just two of them. 1. What did the dealer say had happened to them such that replacing them should be expected to be a permanent "fix"? 2. How long ago was the repair performed? (this would give me some hope for the idea you indeed have an actual permanent fix if it's been long enough to say you're past it for sure)

I have a Plum Crazy 2016 SXT Plus and I've had issues with the USB port and SD card slot since the first week I had the car. I brought it to Service 2 weeks ago and they have no clue but they were able to put over 100 miles on my car, use a 1/4 tank of gas and park it, so my passenger door got hit by someone opening their door !@#$%! Another issue I'm having is the USB music will stop and then the radio is faintly heard but you can't change the volume. After a couple minutes the USB music starts playing again. I've noticed the issue seems to happen when it's really hot or cold outside. When it's under 40 degrees my windows won't go down either, so I can't open the doors because the window is stuck under the weather strip and if I do manage to open the door, then I can't close it.

Ill throw my findings in here I mainly use my USB for charging, why? Dodge cheaped out on the usb input and the little sob heats up once it starts shooting data over. Charging doesn’t cause this as bad from my experience. What did i do? I put all my music on the SD CARD slot. It still has some playback issues but i think it comes back down to the hardware quality rather than any type of glitch.

I brought my 2017 Scat Pack Challenger in for a rocker and door panel replacement. I was listening to music on my USB drive on the way. Well going home nothing worked in the usb ports. Android Auto, Music, Charging phone all no good. Reading the posting I removed fuse #12 and #38 in the trunk fuse box. Verified the fuses were good with a DVM. After waiting 10 minutes reinstalled the fuses and all working. Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!

Lately my navigation stopped picking up satellites. A little research and I found my uconnect software was out of date which may be causing the problem. To do this particular update, it MUST be done through the USB port. So after trying the fuse trick several times it was off to the dealer. They said it was a bad media hub, so I ordered one. They wanted another $250 to install it, so I just did it myself today. Guess what? It's still is dead. I tested the power wire (red/ lt blue) and grounds to the connector at the hub and everything is fine, but it doesn't recognize or power my phone. Next I'm going to purchase a USB tester (only $20 on Amazon) and see what that shows. It's frustrating as I may have a bad part, but have a suspicion it may be something else.

I did the fuse trick multiple times to no avail. After replacing the USB hub with no joy, I went back to the dealer and they found wiring on the connector at the Nav Radio (to the media hub) to be chafing something. They replaced the connector and fixed the wiring and no problems since.  

Didn't see it here so I'll just add that it is critically important that you stay way from aftermarket data cables for best & consistent performance - use only OE Apple/Android USB cables.  

Since there are reports of the usb port heating up should add not to use cables longer than 3ft. Longer cables take more power to push through since the cables copper lines cause some resistance per foot. So longer cables generate more heat at the source. Im having same issues with a Pacifica mini van, Ive seen two seems to be reliable fixes, Reset the radio by pulling fuses and start car, turn off and replace fuses. Second is replacing the USB port hub. For 20$ thats not a bad fix. Just dont want the issue to return. Im going to replace my hub and pop it open and see if i can see anything obvious and maybe test components if i can.  

Very important to me to use the USB drive for my music listening. I own a 2017 Ford Escape that has never had a problem with USB hub. I use a Samsung SSD 1T external hard drive . I rip my music FLAC, either 16/44.1 or 24/96 and 24/192. All stereo. Plays great in the Escape. Now, yesterday with my new 2021 Challenger RT Shaker, 5 days old, I plugged in my external hard drive into both USB 1 and USB 2 and got errors on screen. That was deflating to say the least, should be the simplest thing in the world, certainly more simple than actually driving the car. I guess I will try the fuse removal, some say post #7 (pull fuse #12 & 38), the other post #32 (pull fuse 37 & 38). Seems success is more with pulling 12 & 38. Hopefully I won't have to bring to dealer. Freaks me out to read all the other stories with window problems, etc. Exploring the fuse pull and replace option. For my 2021 it is the rear fuse box in trunk. From the manual: F12 – 20 Amp Yellow Dual USB Center Console Rear/ Cigar Lighter/ IP APO – If Equipped F38 – 20 Amp Yellow Media Hub/ Console APO  

Welcome from Kentucky! I had the same problem a while back and it was a blown fuse in the trunk. Hopefully yours is the same. Easy fix😉  

My USB port intermittently does not charge my devices and therefore also doesn't allow for Apple CarPlay. I'm thinking of bringing my car into the dealership tomorrow for it to be replaced. From the sounds of reading the thread it isn't software but hardware related as if it was software it would either work or not work not have an intermittent issue. So wonder if Dodge will replace the whole USB hub to fix this under warranty  

I took my car to the service department at a Dodge dealership. They said they couldn't find any issues with the USB port no chaffing. Not sure what to do? If I'm getting intermittent issues with the USB ports not charging shouldn't they replace the USB hub or something I don't think it was too expensive and should be covered under warranty anyways. What would fix the USB port charging issue? Basically it won't charge or activate CarPlay sometimes no matter what I do. It only works again from what it seems after I finish driving turn off the car and start the car again. I want to fix the issue before my warranty ends and I also don't want to pay a deductible again for the problem I brought up earlier but was not fixed. Should I call my extended warranty (MVP) and ask for their advice?  

Think I mentioned this earlier in this thread but are you using an actual Apple data cable? Aftermarket cables often result in intermittent performance. Also make sure your phone is up to date w/the latest SW.  

I have an official iPhone cable but also the amazon basic that have the Apple certification so it’s supported that I’ve used in the past. I won’t ever use cheap gas station or unsupported cables. I don’t remember if my other devices failed to charge like my AirPod case. If it doesn’t charge also intermittently then it may not be an iPhone software issue. I’m hoping maybe if there are records that i brought the car in for the issue if the issue comes up again shortly after my extended warranty ends It will still be covered and I don’t have to pay the $100 deductible again. I was just thinking wouldn’t just swapping a part for something new just solve the issue?  

I don't think wanting a new USB hub is an unreasonable ask given the situation, but just so I'm understanding you correctly, the problem is with an Iphone/CarPlay not working correct? I ask because Airpods are not supported devices for the USB hub and may/may not charge (I've never tried). So if you've got an iphone/CarPlay issue then the best advice I can give you is to try to make your setup (phone & cable) avail to the tech so that they can try to duplicate the issue, which they're required to do before replacing any part. If not, they're going to use a different phone & cable for testing which will result in a good connection unless the USB hub is completely dead, i.e., not exactly an apples to apples comparison (no pun intended). If you can demonstrate the issue to a service advisor that can go a long way as well.

I'm trying to record when the USB doesn't work that way I could send in the video for a warranty claim. Basically was told that's what I could do. I'd have to leave a spare phone in my car otherwise I can't film my phone my charging with the USB ports

Its used work on itsown but 2 days was a lot of wait time. i went through the list of fuses in the fusebox cover, I removed and reinstalled maybe 3 fuses, which ever it states usb/cigar.

What fuse should I pull f12 and what else? That’s the only one that seems like usb related  

I've been chasing a parasitic battery drain issue. Today I found the F38 fuse consumes 40mA after car is turned off; waited at least 20mins for everything to go to sleep. Nothing is plugged into the USB/cigar ports in the media hub. Sounds like the dual USB ports are suspect based on these comments, eh? If I leave F38 out I see 50mA total after 10mins; otherwise its 90mA and may be what is killing my battery.

Actingnurse.

On Sunday, my USB port stopped working out of nowhere. I use an iPhone 5 and have done so for the last 15 months. It has always pulled my music library with the touch screen and worked perfectly... On Sunday, my 12V plugs still worked... Monday, they quit. The one under the dash would flicker the phone charger light as if it was trying to work, then I got a funny smell so I pulled it. I tried the one inside of the console next.... nothing. I haven't tried the aux port yet, so not sure if it works either. I'm going to take it to the dealer this weekend and raise hell. It's barely out of warranty and not even a year and a half old. This is not WEAR AND TEAR from mileage/driving. They better fix it or they'll lose me as a customer ever again. I could understand if it were older.... or if it was something mileage related.. I'm about 3k miles out of warranty.

I would suggest going in with a calm and collective demeanor before "raising hell"... You'll probably get a lot farther that way. Have you tried disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to reset everything? With the Canbus communication in newer vehicles that can sometimes help; it may just be a communication issue.
