Trek Marlin review

Smooth-rolling, budget 29er

Steve Worland

Usually, 29in wheel mountain bikes are about 0.5lb heavier than their 26in wheel price brethren. In most cases they have some downmarket parts too, and this is more relevant on £500 bikes than at higher prices.

The big issue is trying to decide whether the bump-taming, easy rolling stability of the wheels makes up for compromises elsewhere. In the case of the Marlin, it rides well enough to overcome its heft burden, but you get cable disc brakes instead of hydraulics and, as usual, the fork is very basic.

Ride & handling: Excellent handling for a 29er

We like the Marlin’s handling. Fisher’s G2 geometry results in a lively steering character that dispels the cliché that 29ers are sluggish over technical terrain. This is a 29er that steers like a 26er but still has the smooth confident roll that makes bigger wheels popular with so many riders.

The long top tube results in a flat backed ride posture that appears to suit most riders, and noticeably makes sat down climbs more efficient. It’s only the limitations of the fork that hinder confidence on rough terrain. We had to strip it and regrease the seals and stanchions after the first wet ride as it all but seized solid.

Frame & equipment: Wheels good, fork bad

The Gary Fisher Collection seat tube graphic is a reminder that Trek have a lot of 29er experience. It pays off in chassis design subtleties. The Fisher G2 geometry has a long top tube, shortish stem and a fork offset that makes slow speed handling more lively than is typical on a 29er, without losing high speed stability. It works.

The Marlin frame is worthy of a much more costly bike. It’s a light, well built, sleek looker and we like the way the short head tube allows for plenty of adjustability in bar height. The curved down tube allows fork clearance without jacking up the front end, the short back end has lots of mud room, and there are two sets of bottle bosses but no rack eyelets on the seatstays.

At this price you’re still getting an SR Suntour XCM fork that rebounds far too quickly and needs servicing after wet rides (removing legs, drying and regreasing takes about 10 minutes) but the G2 geometry ride position helps to keep the rebound in control by placing more upper body weight over the fork, and that helps keep all but the harshest bumps in check. The lockout is very effective but using the spring preload dial doesn’t make much difference.

The Marlin’s drivetrain is a slick-shifting mix of Shimano Altus (crankset, front mech and cassette) and SRAM X4 (rear mech and shifters). The wheels use the bafflingly named Bontrager AT 650 rims, anodised red Formula hubs and minimally knobbed Bontrager 2.1in tyres that roll fast, grip surprisingly well in all but wet mud and never block.

Tektro’s Novela cable-pull disc brakes feel a bit wooden when they’re new but their power and modulation improves as the pads bed in – adding a full outer cable to the rear would avoid frequent servicing. The wide, low Bontrager bar, two-bolt seatpost and saddle are all good quality items.

Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2

Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2

Marlin 5 is a trail-worthy daily rider that's perfectly suited for everyday adventures, on and off the trail. A suspension fork, 2x8 drivetrain, and mounts for a rack and kickstand make it an ideal choice for new trail riders or anyone looking for a comfortable, stable commuter with the ruggedness of a real mountain bike. It's right for you if... You're new to the trail, and you're looking for a real mountain bike that doubles as a commuter—and you want it all at an exceptional value. The tech you get A lightweight aluminum frame with internal routing to protect your cables and add to the bike's sleek look, 2x8 drivetrain, a wide range of gearing so you always have the right gear for your terrain, powerful hydraulic disc brakes, and a terrain-smoothing suspension fork with a lockout. The final word Marlin 5 is a great ride for all your adventures. But it's also versatile, and Marlin 5 is a popular ride on college campuses, because the rack and kickstand mounts make it easy to accessorize and haul a load. Why you'll love it - It's a real mountain bike that's also perfectly suited to daily commutes, rides around campus, or just getting from A to B on any surface - Smaller frame sizes (XXS, XS, and S) have short-reach brake levers that make it easier and more comfortable for riders with smaller hands to brake confidently - Marlin models in XXS through S frame sizes have a curved top tube and a lower standover height that makes it easier for smaller riders to mount and dismount - Rack and kickstand mounts make it easy to accessorize, so your mountain bike can double as a rugged commuter - Like every model in the Marlin family, it's backed by Trek's lifetime warranty Wheel size: - Size XX-Small: 26-inch - Sizes X-Small – Small: 27.5-inch - Sizes Medium – XX-Large: 29-inch

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

Smaller frames (XXS-S) have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. The larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.

The Trek Marlin is a sound basis for a great riding 29er, but it really deserves a better fork

  • Trek marlin 29er ss fork change?

Should I take off the heavy weight stock forks off my trek marlin 29er ss? Rigid? Carbon or steel? Price? can I get a nice buget g2 rigid fork

Oh yea, not taken mine off yet, are the tapered or straight steerer tube. Any one know? Thanks Stoddy

My old one was non tapered. You will struggle to find a g2 fork aftermarket. But you won’t explode if you fit a non g2 one. A nice exotic fork would be ace.

Non-tapered, and if I push ‘go’ on what I’m thinking of tomorrow, it’ll be dressed up in a set of Manitous – they’re closest to the G5 offset (48mm as opposed to 51mm G2 offset)

Humix

Definitely non-tapered steerer. A friend and I put Manitou Tower Pros on our Marlins (one SS and one geared) That was over 2 years ago and they’re both still going strong. I did hear recently, that G2 forks are now available aftermarket, so may be worth a further look before you go for the Maintous

Though you could fit a tapered steerer if you fit an external lower 1.5″ cup for a 44mm head tube.

OP what did you decide to do ? interested as in a similar position myself. belugabob I met your mate @ SSUK and he was saying what a great fork the Manitou Tower Pro was on the Marlin. Unfortunately Pro is out of my budget at the moment so having to consider the Expert as a cheaper alternative.best price new I’ve found so far is £269 @CRC.

Try WinstanleysBikes, they do the Experts for £240 and Pros for £304. I got mine from there.

Nice one Saratoga, unfortunately not available in the flavour I want at the moment. When do the new 2014 forks come out as I was thinking along the lines of when they do then the 2013 models become cheaper ?

Struggling to find White 100mm Tower Experts in stock anywhere now, maybe have to wait for the Pro price to drop then. 😕

Trek Upgrades Its Most Popular Bike: The Marlin

The Marlin has long served as Trek’s entry-level mountain bike, matching a reasonable price with decent equipment.

With a few significant upgrades, the Marlin’s entry-level now starts a bit higher.

Riders can expect updated geometry, a new frame, increased tire clearance, and a rear axle system that “enhances stability and strength,” according to the Trek press release. Forks can be upgraded on most models for greater versatility, and there’s even a new XXS size for younger kids who want to start shredding with family and friends.

Trek Marlin Update: Details

The new digs begin with the Alpha Silver Aluminum frame, which Trek developed for “more compliant frames that retain the acceleration and affordability that have always made aluminum popular,” according to the bike maker’s website.

Updated geometry includes a slacker head tube, longer reach, and wider bars. A 100mm fork helps absorb the shock from roots and rocks, but can also be upgraded to a 120mm fork for sizes XS and up.

2013 trek marlin 29

Taking advantage of greater tire clearance, the Marlin now runs 2.4″ tires offering “improved grip and comfort on rugged trails,” Trek said.

Another major addition is the Thru Skew rear axle system. It bolsters safety and wheel security by fastening the rear wheel to the closed dropout system, Trek claimed, while still adhering to the 135mm rear hub standard. The Thru-Skew uses a removable lever, which riders can store for a “cleaner aesthetic” during rides, the company said.

2013 trek marlin 29

Internal cable routing also gets an update, Trek said, enabling compatibility with internally routed dropper posts. Thanks to internal foam tubes, the cables are also less likely to rattle on rough terrain. And speaking of noise reduction, a full-coverage chain stay guard reduces chain slaps, while shielding against scratches.

Trek Marlin: Pricing and Availability

With the addition of the XXS size, the Marlin now comes in a plethora of sizes, from XXS to XXL. The sizes also change depending on the needs of different-sized riders. The smaller frames, for example, include a curved top tube and accommodate 26″ wheels.

The upgrades apply to the Marlin 6, 7, and 8 models, which have MSRPs of $900, $1,000, and $1,300, respectively.

Still want the cheaper, older version of the Marlin? No problem. Trek will continue to sell the Marlin 4 and 5 models, which cost $630 and $740, respectively.

Isn’t the Marlin a Gary Fisher?

jamie

it was, i think Trek bought Gary Fisher.

Seraph

Trek bought Gary Fisher back in 1993.

I brought a Trek Marlin 6 in 2017. I have rode it over 50,000 miles in 6 years now and it is a great bike for everyday commuting. The best thing about it is it’s frame geometry because it’s very easy on the human body, especially with some simple upgrades. The upgrades, i.e. new fork etc made it look and ride like a high-end expensive bike. I would highly recommend a Trek Marlin because of it geometry alone.

Nope

You did more on your bike than me in car bought 2016 with 29000 miles.

Matt

I recently bought a marlin 7. Replaced the coil spring shox with rockshox Domaine 160mmforks with the 38mm stantions. Put maxxis minions dhf’s 2.4″ both front and back. Wider bars, lighter pedals, stickier grips, stronger lighter wheels, new Shimano xt derailer, shorter neck, rockshox dropper with int. Routing…. I’ve gotten it down to roughly 26.8 lbs and it handles amazing. Best hardtail I think….

Brian

Thru-skew sucks, I hate they are putting that on more bikes. You have to now buy different hub caps end to make it compatible, versus just being able to buy some wheels and inserting them into the bike using standard thru axles. Stop doing this stuff Trek.

Poca De Gracia

Is this the same thing Marin does on the Rift Zone?

Trek's best selling budget mountain bike gets three new models added to the range

Trek says the Marlin – its most popular mountain bike – is even better in its new Gen 3 form with improved trail geometry and additional sizing options

Trek Marlin side on view on a bridge

The Trek Marlin is already one of the best budget mountain bikes on the market and one of the best-selling bikes for Trek. The Wisconsin brand has now added three new Gen 3 models to the Marlin range and says with the all-new features, entry-level mountain bikers riding the new Marlin will be better equipped than ever to hit the trails without breaking your budget.

The new Trek Marlin Gen 3 boasts updated geometry and features that aim to inspire confidence and improve performance wherever it rolls. We delved into the new models and checked out the features for the 2023 range.

Trek Marlin being ridden in a desert

Trek adds a new Alpha Silver Aluminium frame that also gets a trail bike update, with a slacker head tube which is now 66.5 degrees from the old Marlin's 69.5, a longer reach at 440mm matches up with the Trek Roscoe , and the seat tube angle is tweaked from 73.5 to 74 degrees, and again matches the Roscoe. Wider bars and a shortened stem combined are all designed to give confidence when hitting rougher terrain.

The new frame is paired with a 100mm fork, that depending on the model chosen varies in manufacturer. Trek says the fork can also be upgraded to a 120mm fork on sizes from XS and upwards, as new riders develop their skills and want more from their ride. Increased tire clearance, also gives riders options with rubber and the Marlin can roll on tires up to 2.4 inches in size. All models also come tubeless ready and feature Trek’s Smart Wheel Sizing, with wheel size increasing proportionally along with frame size.

Trek Marlin side on in red view

Also new is a Thru Skew rear axle that ups wheel security, and secures into a closed dropout system for a safer, simpler, and stronger ride, while retaining the existing 135mm rear hub. Another handy feature is a removable Thru Skew lever for added wheel security and a cleaner look while riding. Though while this is a neat solution, a much preferable option would have been upgrading the frame to run to a 148mm Boost width hub and a 12mm through-axle to improve rear end stiffness.

The three new models feature an updated internal cable routing and added internally routed dropper post on the Marlin 8 with compatibility to add on the 7 and 6. Internal foam tubes simplify cable routing and prevent cables from rattling on rough rides, and to increase frame protection there is a full-coverage chainstay guard.

Trek continues expanding the Marlin range with an additional XXS size this year, offering a fit for shorter riders and growing kids and a maximum size of XXL.

2023 Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 Review

The Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 has an Alpha Silver alloy frame that weighs only 30.81 lbs, making it lightweight yet highly durable, so you can enjoy responsive handling with just the right amount of flex on challenging trails.

The geometry also provides a low center of gravity for superior control when navigating uneven surfaces and tight turns.

2023 Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 Review

The 2023 Marlin 5 comes equipped with Bontrager Connection 29er wheels on sizes M-XL, 27.5 on small, that feature double wall rims and Bontrager XR2 Comp tires – both offering greater stability and durability while still providing excellent grip on slick surfaces.

2023 Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 Review

Trek equipped the Gen2 with a Shimano Altus 2×8 speed drivetrain that offers top tier shifting performance while Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic disc brakes provide plenty of stopping power on steep descents or in unpredictable conditions.

The 2×8 setup also makes it easy to maintain your gear ratio through variable terrain so that you can maximize your ride experience without worrying about changing gears too often.

The Shimano M315, 36/22 crankset is paired to a reliable 12-32, 8 speed cassette.
