Watch Tom Cruise Channel Meat Loaf, the Weeknd in ‘Lip Sync Battle’

  • By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Tom Cruise scorched The Tonight Show stage Monday night during an epic “Lip Sync Battle” that left host Jimmy Fallon wide-eyed and slack-jawed. The Mission Impossible actor’s turn was so good, he at one point relegated Fallon from the role of host to glorified coat rack.

Cruise kicked off the game with a rendition of The Weeknd’s summer smash, “I Can’t Feel My Face,” that was so sultry and smooth its creator offered this praise on   Twitter , “I can’t believe @TomCruise is singing my song. @jimmyfallon you’re the MAN for this one… that shit got me hype… lol I can’t lie.”

The Weeknd was an equal opportunity praiser, tweeting  to rival host Jimmy Kimmel, “you’re still my boy too.”

The kind words were ultimately deserved as Fallon settled into his rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Undercover of the Night.” Already well-versed in mimicking Mick Jagger’s mannerisms , Fallon pursed his lips and strutted like a frantic peacock, but had to nix the frontman’s ostentatious hand claps due to his bandaged finger .

The men who filmed 'hawk tuah' think they should be famous, too, god bless america, willie nelson's back onstage for 4th of july concert, kendrick lamar's victory lap continues with 'not like us' video.

For his follow-up, Cruise feigned the most obvious selection, Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll.” He even slid up to the mic to the opening piano stabs like he did in Risky Business , before grinning at Fallon and admitting, “That wouldn’t be fair, would it?” Instead, Cruise made Fallon hold his jacket while he performed Meat Loaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” with the melodramatic theatricality — hands to the heavens, down on his knees, the mic stand haphazardly discarded several feet away  — only a trained actor could muster.

Fallon essentially ceded the contest after that, but rules are rules, and the host dutifully performed his final song, the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” — the second most obvious choice from the Cruise oeuvre . Fallon fittingly dedicated the song to Goose from Top Gun and insisted Cruise join him. The pair then proceeded to croon the track and compete for the charms of a lucky lady in the front row, alternately kissing her hand, blowing her hair and rubbing her face.

Tom Cruise Has Epic Lip Sync Battle With Jimmy Fallon, Covers Hit Songs by The Weeknd and Meatloaf

By zach johnson • published july 28, 2015 • updated on july 28, 2015 at 11:33 am.

Tom Cruise always gives 100 percent.

That was certainly evident when he agreed to have a lip sync battle with Jimmy Fallon on NBC's "The Tonight Show" Monday. Like John Krasinski and Emma Stone before him, the 53-year-old "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" star proved he's more than capable of challenging the late-night host's skills. In fact, the comedian himself admitted, "I'm facing off against one of the biggest movie stars of all time."

Before it even began, Cruise said, "This is going to be ridiculous."

As was the case with previous lip sync battles, neither the host nor the guest knew which songs their opponent picked to perform. Fallon and Cruise selected two songs each, and Cruise went first. "My first song has been at the top of the charts all summer long. It's the song of the summer. Right, Jim?" he said. "Remember that? It is by the enormously talented The Weeknd and it's entitled 'Can't Feel My Face.'" Cruise was so committed to his performance that even Fallon was seen dancing on the side of the stage. "Come on!" Fallon yelled. "Why am I even trying?"

Fallon admitted Cruise would be "hard to beat," but he still gave it his best shot. "My first song is one of my favorite bands, The Rolling Stones. This song is called 'Undercover of the Night,'" he said. Mick Jagger would be proud of Fallon's moves.

"That wouldn't be fair, would it?" Cruise asked. The comedian pleaded, "Please do not do that! That would not be fair! Please!"

Cruise removed his suit jacket, but alas, he did not strip down to his briefs.

"No, that wouldn't be fair," he conceded. "So look, instead I'm gonna do something that takes me back to high school, the parking lot, on Friday night. Those Jersey girls would sing all the lyrics. Do you mind holding my coat for me? And the guys would just sit there and sweat, hearts pounding. This is for all those Jersey girls on the hot summer nights. It's by Meatloaf. It's called 'Paradise by the Dashboard.'"

Needless to say, it was a killer rendition. "Wow, that was awesome!" Fallon told Cruise. "You did a one-man duet! I've never seen that before!"

For his final song, Fallon asked Cruise for some help in lip syncing The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Loving Feeling." The actor happily obliged, and together, the two even serenaded one lucky audience member.

"Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" is in theaters Friday.

Tom Cruise Can’t Keep Straight Face After First Line of Jimmy Fallon’s ‘Mad Lib Theater’ (Video)

Or the second, or third…

youtube tom cruise jimmy fallon

Tom Cruise feels the need, the need, for silly wordplay. On Monday’s “Tonight Show,” the “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” star played a little “Mad Lib Theater” with Jimmy Fallon.

Considering the man behind big-screen IMF agent Ethan Hunt barely got through a line of the sketch without breaking, it’s probably best that Cruise stick to action flicks. Leave the comedy to Fallon, who proves time and time again that maybe drama is a step too far for his own chops.

Watch the two play secret agents with a very confusing mission via the video above.

If you want something Cruise is much better at, check out “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” when the summer blockbuster races into theaters on Friday.

Tom Cruise Pulls Off the Impossible in Unbelievable ‘Lip Sync Battle’ With Jimmy Fallon (Video)

Giving his best performance since he serenaded Kelly McGillis in a bar in “Top Gun,” Tom Cruise dominated the “Lip Sync Battle” against Jimmy Fallon on Monday’s “Tonight Show.”

“Tonight I am facing off against one of the biggest movie stars of all time,” the late-night host announced, before Cruise came out in force.

“My first song has been on the top of the charts all summer long, it’s the song of the summer,” the “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” action star said as he took the mic for The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face.”

Cruise didn’t need any of the costumes or props that have become commonplace on the Spike spinoff show, as he expertly channeled the band with intense facial expressions and slick hand gestures.

Fallon’s attempt at a comeback with the Rolling Stones fell on deaf ears as Cruise dominated the competition.

He went on to recall nights of steamy teenage romantic clinches as he took off his jacket, rolled up his shirt sleeves and jumped into Meatloaf’s “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” — flawlessly miming to both sets of vocals.

“You did a one-man duet! I’ve never seen that done before,” Fallon marveled.

The “Tonight Show” host then went on to steal Cruise’s signature song right from under him as Fallon took on the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” and told the audience “this one goes out to Goose.”

Fortunately, helpful Cruise offered a hand with the backup vocals to recreate the iconic scene from his 1986 breakout role.

“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” hits theaters on Friday, July 31.

“The Tonight Show” airs at 11:35 p.m. on NBC.

Watch as Jimmy Fallon learns a lip-sync battle with Tom Cruise is risky business

On Monday, it was more of the same as Fallon was forced to lip-sync battle Tom Cruise in front of a live studio audience.

Okay, enough with the sarcasm. Everything we’ve mentioned so far sounds awesome, and Fallon’s battle with Cruise was just as epic as you might imagine.

It started off with Cruise’s sensual rendition of The Weekend’s Can’t Feel My Face, to which Fallon responded with a pitch-perfect Mick Jagger impression, belting out The Rolling Stones’ Undercover of the Night.

Round 1: Fallon

But then Cruise got frisky — and even threatened to get risky.

As the first few notes of Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” played, Cruise slid across the floor, cradling the mic stand … but then took pity on his opponent. “That wouldn’t be fair would it?” Asked Cruise. “Please do not do that,” Fallon replied “that would not be fair.” Busting out a reprisal of one of the most famous moments in the history of lip-syncing could certainly have been considered cheating, so Cruise went with a Meat Loaf classic instead, revving up the crowd with Paradise by the Dashboard Light.

Round 2: Cruise

Since Fallon seemed to know he couldn’t beat ‘em after Cruise crushed his second song, there was only one thing left for the comedian to do.

Fallon joined his opponent for a stirring, harmonious rendition of The Righteous Brothers You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’ and the two actually knelt down to serenade an unsuspecting (and thoroughly embarrassed) fan.

The Tonight Show host continues to make late-night television loads of fun and seems to have a knack for getting even the most image-conscious celebs to let their guard down. We’re excited to see who will step into the ring with Fallon next.

Tom Cruise Finds It (Mission) Impossible Not to Laugh in Mad Lib Theater Sketch with Jimmy Fallon

The actor was on the late night show to promote his new movie, Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Tom Cruise can add a stint in Mad Lib Theater to his formidable list of performances.

Cruise participated in the fun segment when he stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday. Fallon, 43, asked Cruise, 56, to fill out a mad lib before the duo acted out the resulting — hilarious — script.

Cruise had some memorable answers as Fallon prompted him to fill in the blanks: A silly word? Pollywog. A curse word a first grader would use? Doody-head. Plural animals? Lemmings.

In the skit, Cruise and Fallon played spies aboard a train — but from the start, neither could keep their composure. “Good evening my little cookie,” Fallon started, prompting a chuckle from Cruise that sent the late night host into hysterics.

After breaking, neither star could keep it together throughout the remainder of the bit. Cruise particularly drew laughs from the audience when he was forced to share his character’s “personal mantra”: “poopity scoop.”

Cruise was visiting The Tonight Show to promote his new film, Mission: Impossible – Fallout .

At the movie’s Paris premiere earlier this month, Cruise told reporters that he spent over a year training for some of the stunts in the action movie.

“The helicopter—that was unique. I took a year and a half training on helicopters,” he explained. “I had to feel in control because I was flying with the rotor blades only a few feet from the cliffs, and I wanted to do that.”

RELATED VIDEO: Tom Cruise Shares Photo To Tease Start of Production on ‘Top Gun 2’

He added, “Each stunt has its own difficulties. Going through Paris without a helmet with cars driving against you was really a challenge. Very tricky. You don’t want to fall; you don’t have the right to make errors. You’re riding really fast. It’s beautiful but dangerous, and every day that we finished we felt relieved.”

Cruise is also gearing up for another high-flying film: the Top Gun sequel , in which Miles Teller will star opposite Cruise.

Meanwhile, Fallon has been cracking jokes alongside a number of celebrities. Just last week , he had Amanda Seyfried sing Abba songs that had been jumbled by Google Translate. And last month, he performed a classroom-instruments version of “I Want It That Way” with the Backstreet Boys .

Ten down, forever to go!  Jimmy Fallon  on Tuesday will celebrate 10 years as host of The Tonight Show , and he's marking the milestone by sitting down with ET for a  rETrospective .

The 49-year-old late-night TV host is looking back at some of his most iconic moments in a storied career that began long before he burst onto the national spotlight when he joined Saturday Night Live as a cast member in 1998. ET was right there with him -- well before he was discovered -- when he performed at the Improv for Mary Hart's 15th anniversary party.

Fast-forward to now, and Fallon's become a household name and synonymous with belly laughs. He was named host of The Tonight Show  in 2014, and he's up to the challenge of eclipsing the late Johnny Carson for the longest tenured host of the iconic late-night series.

"Well, this is 10 years. Johnny has 30, so I have 20 more years to go," Fallon quipped. "I feel pretty good. I still love what I do. I love talking to people. I feel like it's getting even more fun because I have grown up with these people now, and I have seen them -- their highs their lows. I've seen bad boyfriends. I've seen good boyfriends. I've seen them get married and have kids and the kids grow up. I mean, I've seen a lot of stuff in the 10 years of The Tonight Show , and I'd love to go on longer and just keep making more memories and making more friends. It's truly a dream come true."

To commemorate the momentous occasion, Fallon will host a primetime NBC special celebrating his 10th anniversary. In his very first Tonight Show monologue, Fallon recalled being a kid and asking his parents if he could stay up late to watch Carson's monologue before going to bed. At times, he said he'd slide over to the side so his parents wouldn't know he was still there, all to catch a glimpse of the first guest.

And here he is now, the face of an iconic NBC franchise.

"I'm very lucky, again, with The Tonight Show . Good things keep happening to the show, and I just want to keep it rolling, keep everyone having fun," he said. "Our whole goal of the show is to make people laugh and to make people happy, and if I can do it for as long as I can, that'll be the best thing for me."

Under his tenure, Fallon's produced countless unforgettable moments. Like in 2015, when Tom Cruise  squared off against Fallon in an epic lip sync battle. Cruise, at the time, picked a current chart-topper for his first selection, getting down in a big way to The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face."

"I mean, come on. Tom Cruise practiced this for five hours this day," Fallon recalled. "I wasn't allowed to go into the studio 'cause he's such a perfectionist, and I didn't want to know."

From his memorable Saturday Night Live sketches to landing the role of "camera guy No. 2" on Spin City  to meeting his future wife, Nancy Juvonen, and the mother of their two children while filming the 2005 sports romcom Fever Pitch , Fallon was captivated at the fact ET had been there since the very beginning.

"ET has always been there for me my whole career. You were there before I even did anything. I'm honored. That's a wild trip to memory lane," he said. "I'm lucky. I'm surrounded by great people, supportive people who make me look good and make me funny, they write great jokes. I have the best staff, the best crew, the best camera operators, the best audio, hair and makeup and wardrobe. It's endless. I'm the luckiest guy in the world."

NBC on Tuesday will air a two-hour special at 9 p.m. ET to celebrate Fallon's 10th anniversary as host of The Tonight Show .

Jimmy Fallon wasn't bothered by his decline in ratings compared to Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, revealing that he's beating them out elsewhere.

Not Once Did Jimmy Fallon Mention Jessica Alba's Ageless Appearance Throughout Their Interview

Fans were delighted to see Jessica Alba back on television, taking on an interview alongside Jimmy Fallon.

Alba had plenty to talk about, which included her life as a mom, and attempting to plan her daughter's 16th birthday party. In addition, Alba discussed her latest film, Trigger Warning.

It was a great interview between the two. As expected, a lot of the comments on YouTube were directed towards Alba's ageless appearance . However, credit to Jimmy Fallon, who didn't discuss Alba's appearance once. This was a breath of fresh air for Alba, who had struggled with this in the past. So much so, that Alba revealed in other interviews that she stopped eating so that she wouldn't get as much attention from men in Hollywood.

“I was meant to feel ashamed if I tempted men. Then I stopped eating a lot when I became an actress. I made myself look more like a boy so I wouldn’t get as much attention. I went through a big tomboy phase.”

She continued, “In Hollywood, you’re really preyed upon. They see a young girl, and they just want to touch you inappropriately or talk to you inappropriately or think that they’re allowed to be aggressive with you in a way. So, then I like created this pretty intense ‘don’t f— with me’ [attitude]. I had to create a harder shell about being a woman.”

Given such a tough history, Fallon wisely avoided the topic.

Stephen Colbert Was Also Recently Praised For Not Commenting On Anya Taylor-Joy's Dress

Anya Taylor-Joy's bondage dress was all fans could take about following her interview with Stephen Colbert. The revealing dress was hanging on the back of 12 strings. Despite all the media attention to it, Colbert didn't mention it once. In addition, Taylor-Joy was full of praise for the host.

"You were one of my first interviews, and treated me with such kindness and respect. So thank you for that."

Anya Taylor-Joy

Colbert stayed focused throughout the interview, and kept his attention on Anya Taylor-Joy's work in Furiosa .

  • "I had never driven a car in my life," she said.
  • "When George Miller calls you and asks you, do you want to learn how to drive a car to be in Mad Max, you say yes. And then you figure it out as you go along. I'm driving some really cool vehicles in this. The first thing I ever learned how to do in a car is something called a Juicy Lift 180. You just floor the accelerator, then you pull on the emergency break, and eventually you stop."

Yet another great interview, and yet another example as to how times are changing on late night TV.
