Making Your Fishing Trip Exceptional is Our Only Goal
Fishing guide Jack Dennis left the famed Jack Dennis Outdoor Shop that bears his name in 2009 but started another fly shop and Jack Dennis Fishing Trips when he left. He leveraged 40 years of veteran, reliable guiding experience, and a long list of satisfied anglers.
In 2012, Jack Dennis retired from Jack Dennis Fishing Trips, but sold the service to his most trusted and experienced guides — Scott Smith, Mark Fuller, and a handful of business partners.
Grand Teton Fly Fishing carries on the tradition of great experience, service, and expertise set by Jack Dennis by offering the best, most customer-driven fishing trips in Jackson Hole.

Don’t Take Our Word For It, Our Guests Have to Say:
This was my second trip with Reel Deal Anglers, I would definitely give them 5 stars plus. Both trips were led by guides who not only knew the waters we were fishing well, but were very hard working and very pleasant. The fishing was terrific on both days and I lost count of how many fish we hooked. (more…)
Gig ‘Em & Mike O.
My husband and I are seasoned anglers so when we say it was an excellent experience with Reel Deal Anglers, we mean from customer service and response by Rhett to Brian, our guide. Brian knew exactly where to find the fish and we caught many - large and small. It doesn't get any better than our experience with Reel Deal Anglers!! Thank you, Rhett and Brian, for taking such good care of us! Even giving us suggestions for where/how to fish Flat Creek.
Absolutely outstanding three days of fishing the Green River with Reel Deal Anglers. Austin was one of the very best guides I have ever had in 25 years of fly fishing. Rhett Bain runs a first rate outfit, and we are sure to come back for more good times. Thanks again for a memorable trip
Dear Mr. Bain, We wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our fishing trips with Brian and Alex. They were very personable and pleasant. They put us on a lot of fish. We had a wonderful experience that exceeded our every expectation. We will certainly highly recommend you to friends and family coming to Jackson Hole. Thanks again for a wonderful experience.

Grey Reef Anglers Client Feedback
“I’ve fished with Jason and crew many times over the years and I always come back as I know I will get a consistently top-notch experience. These guys are hard core fishermen like me, and they work hard to put you on the fish, whether it’s sunny and 80 degrees, or snowing with wind and -10 degrees. Their knowledge of the North Platte system is unsurpassed. Oh, and it helps that the North Platte is one if the finest fisheries in the country, hands down. I will be a Grey Reef customer and friend for life”. Grey Reef Anglers Doug Benson
“When comparing outfitters in the area we chose Grey Reef Anglers for several reasons, #1 they have a tremendous return client base which speaks volumes about their services, and on their fishing report they actually post photos of fish caught that day which adds a lot of validity to the report. If you look back over the past fishing posts for the season the sheer volume of big fish photos, revealed to us that they are the ones we wanted to book with”. Grey Reef Anglers Jim Picardi – Colorado
“Hey just wanted to thank you again for a great trip down the river. Roger had a blast and can’t stop talking about those gummy bears. That awesome brown raised some eyebrows too. We hope to see you again for a trophy trip real soon. Let us know when you think it would be a good time to book.” Grey Reef Anglers Larry

Wyoming fly fishing guide service
Experience the best of southwest wyoming.
We cover a lot of water in Western Wyoming. From the mountain headwaters of the Green to the bottom of Seedskadee, we cover nearly the entire Green River Basin. Near Pinedale and Daniel, the freestone Upper Green and New Fork Rivers provide excellent float fishing opportunities on relatively small water. Numerous public and private tributaries provide smaller creek wade fishing and a number of lakes in the area hold lunkers that are truly mind altering. Further downstream where the river becomes a broad tailwater flowing from Fontenelle Reservoir, we are fortunate to be one of the few guide services that can legally guide fishing trips on the 37 miles of the Green River flowing through Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge (under Solitary Angler, Park City Fly Shop/Guide Service & Four Seasons). Jumping over the hill to the Alpine, Star Valley and Afton areas, we also guide trips on the Salt River, an intimate little river that has a character all its own. Whatever experience you’re looking for, our guides are simply the best at putting you on fish and making sure you’re having a great time on the water.

Fly Fishing Lessons | $130/2 hrs
Our introductory fly fishing lessons are a great way to get your feet wet with a fly rod and not commit the entire day to it. We do a 2 hour lesson, which goes over the basics in fly casting, equipment, entomology, and how to play and land a fish. We do these lessons on dry land then progress to either a pond or a stream. These venues have fish, so catching a fish during your lesson is certainly a possibility! The “extended” fly casting lesson has been a hit in recent years. You can spend 2 hours on a proper casting lesson, then go fishing on an hourly basis after that for a rate of $75 per hour, guide/instructor included.
Scenic Float Trip | $200/3 hrs
If you’re interested in viewing the river from a boat and not fishing, these scenic float trips are a great way to view wildlife and enjoy the scenery the Green and New Fork Rivers have to offer. These trips are usually 3 hours in duration and can accommodate up to 3 people per drift boat.

Wyomings Hidden Gem
Boasting a slower current than it’s neighboring Snake and South Fork of the Snake Rivers, this small intimate river is a perfect place for anglers to catch trophy-sized brown trout at the start and end of the season.
REGIONS We Fish
Teton Troutfitters is authorized to provide river guiding services over more than 30 miles of the upper snake river as a current holder of a permit from the Bridger Teton National Forest. As a result, we can tailor each trip to the angler’s ability level and the conditions at the time. This magnificent river is home to many cutthroat trout as well as bald eagles, osprey, moose, otters, and vistas of the mountains. Native cutthroat trout are found on cut banks and log jams throughout the upper Snake River’s braided channels. We provide full-day and half-day fishing excursions in these areas.
Our curriculum includes casting instruction, and our fishing guides are able to work with beginners or more seasoned anglers to improve their skills.
Yellowstone National Park
The Yellowstone Float is our premier trip, allowing anglers to experience a part of Yellowstone Park that many of the annual 4 million visitors will never access. Our Yellowstone Park licensed fishing guides will guide you along 110 miles of shoreline, in search of native cutthroat. Whether you fly fish, or spin fish, this catch and release area has some of the largest cutthroat trout in the park.
The New Fork River
Brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout can be found in this significant tributary of the Green River. A precise presentation is necessary to attract these picky fish to eat on the New Fork, a little river similar to the Green. For the greatest experience, our guides have a lot of expertise in navigating this treacherous water.
An excellent environment for raising the fish of a lifetime is provided by its undercut banks and apparently infinite bends.
The Salt River offers superb trout habitat, breathtaking scenery, and a thriving fish population as it flows from the east into Palisades Reservoir. The native cutthroat rising to dried flies in this river are renowned for being especially voracious. This river’s several portions offer a variety of water for fishing.
The Green River
The Green River, which is only 45 miles from Jackson, offers a ton of fantastic fishing chances. Although the autumn fishing on this freestone river is also fantastic, the finest fishing is in the early summer months of June and July. Every fisherman who visits these waterways has the opportunity to capture the fish of a lifetime since there are so many different trout species to target.
This is definitely a trophy trout trip, as antelope herds and the Wind River Range welcome you as you approach the river.

15 Places to Fly Fish in Wyoming: Maps Included
Wyoming is the least populated state in the Union, and home to some of the finest trout waters in the west. I have listened to my dad’s stories about the pristine fly fishing waters of Wyoming since I was a little kid. He could talk for hours about the legendary salmon fly hatches on the Hoback River or the monster rainbow trout that would spool him on the North Platte River. So, when I graduated from college, I skipped the graduation ceremony and headed for Wyoming. I was not disappointed. Whether you like casting huge dry flies to native cutthroat trout or swinging streamers for 20+ inch brown trout, Wyoming has it all.
1. Flat Creek for Fly Fishing – Truly Amazing
If you’re looking for gin clear water, easy access, and plenty of wiley 20 inch native Snake River Finespotted Cutthroat Trout then Flat Creek is for you. Flat Creek is located in the National Elk Refuge only a few minutes outside of Jackson, WY, and it offers some of the finest and most difficult spring creek fishing in the west. Flat Creek is open between August 1 and October 31, and the waters are restricted to artificial flies only.
The careful regulation of this gem of a spring creek has led to a very healthy population of Snake River Finespotted Cutthroat Trout and there are plenty of fish that are over 20 inches lurking beneath the cutbanks. This fishing is tough. Flat Creek is not a creek where you can wade along casting blindly to likely water and waiting for fish to eat. There is a lot of insect life on this river, so you need to be patient, take your time, and meander along until you find a fish sipping bugs off the surface. I like a 9ft/4wt rod and 5x fluorocarbon tippet. Matching the hatch is critical, and you don’t want to hit these waters without a couple great PMD, caddis, and BWO patterns in your box.
Where to Fish Flat Creek
One of the great things about Flat Creek is that it is close enough to town that you can sneak out and wet a line while the wife takes a nap to sleep off those Moscow Mules she had with lunch. There are several places to access Flat Creek in the Elk Refuge, but I prefer to fish Lower Flat Creek. Head north out of Jackson on High 89/US Highway 26, go about 3.5 miles, and look for Fish Hatch Rd. Pull off onto this road and then parking will be on your left. There are also several parking areas that are located directly off the highway, and can be found on the map that is provided in the National Elk Refuge Fishing Regulations: https://www.fws.gov/uploadedFiles/NER_FishRegsWEB.pdf
Park here and walk way downstream and then fish back up to your car.
Recommended Flies for Flat Creek
- Parachute Hopper, Size 8-12. Flat Creek meanders through a huge meadow that is full of grasshoppers, and you definitely want to have a couple in your box. Throw a hopper on windy days when these big terrestrials are being blown into the water. Don’t be afraid to skate that hopper a short ways right when it hits the water, and be ready for a violent take.
- PMDs, Size 16-18. Almost every afternoon there is a phenomenal PMD hatch. Thorax PMDs are my favorite, and if you can find them tied with CDC feathers, that is even better.
- BWOs, Size 16-22. Once the colder weather sets in, the BWOs start hatching in earnest. If it looks like it is a little overcast, find the time to head out to Flat Creek and bring a handful of Comparadun CDC BWOs, BWO Parachutes, and BWO Last Chance Cripples.
- Galloup’s Sex Dungeon, Size 2. Slap this big nasty bug up against the banks and cover some water. I recommend throwing these nasty streamers on a short, 0x leader.
2. Gros Ventre River – Great to Fly Fish in July
The Gros Ventre (pronounced “Grow Vaunt”) River flows out of the Gros Ventre Wilderness and is home to spectacular scenery and world-class trout fishing. Gros Ventre (which means ‘big belly’ in French) might have been named after a nearby geological feature, but it definitely describes the bellies on the fish that you find in this river. The fishing on the Gros Ventre usually picks up in July once the water has come down a little bit, and stays good through the season unless it is a dry year.
The Gros Ventre River is home to the Snake River Finespotted Cutthroat Trout, and these fish are opportunistic predators that won’t shy away from crushing Purple Chubbies and Circus Peanuts all day long. The average fish in the Gros Ventre is between 8-14 inches, but every now and then you will find a 20in fish holding in a deeper pool.
Where to Fish on the Gros Ventre River
The Gros Ventre River flows for over 70 miles and offers a little bit of everything. If you are comfortable with rutted, narrow roads and have a good four-wheel drive vehicle, you can follow the Gros Ventre River up into the wilderness and drop into the phenomenal pocket water beneath Slide Lake or follow the road all the way up to Goosewing Ranger Station and dive into the wilderness and solitude that the upper reaches have to offer.
Although much can be said about the upper reaches of the Gros Ventre, I prefer to fish the lower stretch in the National Elk Refuge. Head north out of Jackson, WY on Highway 89/US Highway 26 and follow this road until you cross the Gros Ventre River, and then turn right onto Gros Ventre Rd. There are numerous parking spots on the right. Even though you are only a little ways outside of town, wildlife such as grizzly bears and moose are abundant in the area. Make plenty of noise walking through the brush and always carry your bear spray.
Recommended Flies for the Gros Ventre River
- Purple Chubby, Size 8-12. Something about this fly is irresistible for these fish. Make sure to dress it in your favorite floatant and it will stay afloat for the rest of the day.
- Rubber Leg Stimulator, Size, 10-16. The Gros Ventre River supports a great stonefly population, and when you see these bugs crawling around in the willows it is time to tie on a Rubber Leg Stimulator.
- Yellow or Red PMX, Size 10-16. Another terrestrial pattern that brings these willing fish to the surface. I usually like red or yellow, but black works just as well.
- Streamers. Stop by a local fly shop and ask them for their new favorite flavor. Jackson is home to some fly tying wizards, and it is always fun trying out new bugs.
With all these choices to fly fish in Wyoming, I’m going to give you a secret. The Wyoming Trout Unlimited Council has a great website. Link – Wyoming Trout Unlimited They provide FREE publications and other resources, you’ve got to check it out!
3. Snake River – Legendary, but a Drift Boat is Best
It is hard to talk about fly fishing in NW Wyoming without mentioning the Snake River. Floating the Snake River along the base of the Teton Range while casting huge dry flies to willing Snake River Finespotted Cutthroat trout is an experience that is hard to beat. The upper stretches of the river offer countless riffles and pools, and once the river flows into Snake River Canyon the water gets wild with great pocket water fishing. Other than casting to willing fish, any day on the river offers the opportunity to see a plethora of wildlife including: bison, elk, moose, deer, bears, and bald eagles.
Where to Fish on the Snake River
The Snake River is famous for its float fishing, but I prefer to wade this river. The Snake River is full of braids; small side-streams that are revealed when the water drops after runoff. These braids do not usually get fished by the multitudes that float the Snake, and they offer really interesting structure and easy wading.
The fish in the Snake River love to eat big dry flies, so you want to bring a 9ft 5wt or 6wt rod that can cast these bigs bugs through the wind that occasionally blows down out of the Tetons. There is plenty of public land and great access to the Snake River, but my favorite spot lies on the Teton Pass Highway. Head out of Jackson, WY on the Teton Pass Highway and drive until you come to the Snake River. Park at Emily Stevens Park, and then start walking upstream. Even though it is hard to walk by great water, stretch your legs and cover some ground before stepping into one of the finest dry fly rivers Wyoming has to offer.
Always carry bear spray and keep an eye out for moose in the willows.
Recommended Flies for Snake River
- Chubby Chernobyl, Size 8-14. This huge terrestrial pattern is an incredibly dynamic pattern that pulls fish off the bottom and floats all day long. This fly is tied in a wide variety of colors, but an orange belly/tan foam is a personal favorite. If you are feeling artsy, buy neutral-colored Chernobyl flies and then bring a pack of permanent markers with you on the river. Color your bugs to match the hatch or try out different combinations.
- Clouser Minnows, Size 6-12. The trout in the Snake River are an aggressive bunch, and the diving and jumping motion of a Clouser Minnow really upsets them. I like red/black clousers, but white/white is a great option as well.
- Galloup’s Sex Dungeon, Size 2-6. Try white, black or olive, and short leaders with a sink tip line.
- BWOs and PMDs. Size 14-20. Although the Snake River isn’t famous for its hatches, you definitely don’t want to hit these waters without a couple of these patterns in your box. When the fish key in on these bugs it can make for a great evening.
4. Hoback River – Mountain Fly Fishing for Cutthroat
The Hoback River flows out of the Wyoming Range and offers great fly fishing in a spectacular setting. Highway 191 follows the Hoback River through the Hoback River Canyon and there are numerous access points all along the highway. The Hoback offers outstanding dry fly fishing for Snake River Cutthroat Trout that generally range between 6 and 16 inches.
The salmon fly hatch on the Hoback is something to behold. You will wear out flies if you hit the Hoback during the right time. The stonefly hatch that occurs during the same time can be even better. I like to throw an orange belly/dark tan foam Chubby Chernobyl during these hatches because it looks a little bit like both of these big terrestrials.
5. Leigh Lake – Still Water Fly Fishing
Leigh Lake is a glacially formed lake that lies at the base of Paintbrush Canyon and Leigh Canyon. Situated entirely in Grand Teton National Park, Leigh Lake is just under 1800 acres. Leigh Lake is a great early season option when the rivers in the region are still blown out. When the ice starts to thaw, usually in mid-May, head up to Leigh Lake and bring some big baitfish patterns. Big cutthroat and lake trout cruise the banks of the lake, and make for some really fun sight fishing. White woolly buggers with plenty of flash are always productive. You can also get a canoe into the lake if you put in at String Lake, paddle to the portage, and carry your canoe a short distance to Leigh Lake.
6. Miracle Mile – Probably Some of the Best Fly Fishing
The Miracle Mile is located in central WY between Pathfinder Reservoir and Kortes Reservoir. It lies entirely within Bureau of Reclamation Land and has great populations of monster rainbow trout and brown trout that can weigh north of 10 pounds.
There are abundant food sources in this stretch that enable fish to grow quickly and make this stretch of the North Platte River a fly fishing haven. The Miracle Mile offers great dry fly fishing and streamer fishing, but the most productive method is definitely nymphing. Try a tandem nymph rig with a leech pattern as your leading fly and then a small midge or emerger trailing behind it. I like RS2, Disco Midges, Zebra Midges, and Tube Midges. The weather in this region is unpredictable and the roads can become impassable, so plan ahead and be safe.
7. Green River – Fly Fish for Browns, Rainbow, Cutthroat and Brooks!
The Green River originates in Bridger-Teton National Forest and is home to some of my favorite memories. The Green River is home to rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, and cutthroat trout. While large stretches of the Green flow through private property, there is plenty of public access for anglers seeking to wade or float the Green. My two favorite sections of the Green River are north of Warren Bridge on Highway 191 and the tailwater section below Fontenelle Reservoir. There are monster brown trout and rainbow trout in these sections.
The boulder fields above Warren Bridge can be particularly productive. Take your time moving through these boulders and make sure you get a good drift. Stripping big streamers through these waters can be very productive, but you want to be sure to carry some BWOs and PMDs just in case some clouds roll in and these big fish start looking up.
8. Fremont Canyon – Scenic Fly Fishing at it’s Best
The Fremont Canyon (and Caldwell Meadow) stretch of the North Platte River lies between Pathfinder Reservoir and Alcova Reservoir. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has implemented minimum flows through this section, and this has resulted in health populations of big rainbow trout, big brown trout, and plenty of bugs to support them. The dry fly fishing can be great with hatches of caddis, tricos, baetis and midges, but nymphing is still the most productive method of fly fishing in Fremont Canyon. If the fishing is slow, switch out that nymph rig for a streamer and start covering some water. There are plenty of (really) big fish in this stretch that are looking for a big meal. I like throwing white or olive Sex Dungeons Size 2-6.
9. Grey Reef – Part of Something Bigger
The Grey Reef section of the North Platte River is one of the most productive fly fisheries in Wyoming. This series of dams makes for an ideal coldwater fishery, and this stretch of the North Platte River boasts 3000 fish per mile. The unlimited food source consisting of high protein snacks like scuds and leeches means that these fish and well fed and can grow to weigh north of 20 pounds. There isn’t much structure on this section, and bigger fish tend to be in the deeper troughs that form in the middle of the river. There is a great trico hatch during the summer, but nymphing and streamer fishing are going to be the most productive methods on the Grey Reef. Bring as a 7wt or 8wt rod if you head out to Grey Reef in search of monsters.
10. Thermopolis – Remote Tailwater, Great for Dry Flies
If you are looking for a remote tailwater that holds thousands of fish per mile, then you need to pack your 6wt and head to Thermopolis and fish the Bighorn River. The Bighorn River is synonymous with Montana, but the river originates in WY and the tailwater stretch in Thermopolis rivals any stretch in Montana. The trico, PMD, and BWO hatches on this river are incredible. When the dry fly fishing is slow, take out your favorite streamer or nymph rig. This section is a midge factory, and midge nymphs like the RS2 and Disco Midge are always a good option. In terms of streamers, big nasty bugs that imitate leeches, crayfish, and small fish will always do the trick.
11. North Fork of the Buffalo Fork
The Buffalo Fork is the highest drainage in Teton Wilderness, and offers some of the most wild and scenic fly fishing Wyoming has to offer. Wait for the North Fork to clear and then pack for an overnight camping trip and hike upriver. The fish in the North Fork are voracious after the runoff, and this time usually coincides with a great stonefly hatch. Bring your favorite foam terrestrial patterns like Purple Chubbies or Orange Chubbies, or, if you prefer the more traditional patterns, Humpies and Stimulators will do the trick just fine. The best access to the North Fork is from Turpin Meadows Ranch, and from there hike upriver into the Bridger-Teton National Forest.
12. Tongue River – Lesser Known but Fantastic for Flies
The Tongue River runs out of the mystical Bighorn Mountains and is a tributary of the Yellowstone River. The Tongue River has two forks, the North and South Fork, but I prefer to fish the North Fork. Whether you prefer to fish fast pocket water or meandering grass-lined banks, the North Fork has a little bit of everything. The fish in the North Fork are a little wary of anglers, so lighter tippets and correct fly selection is important if you want to land some of these beautiful fish. A hopper-dropper rig is particularly effective on this river. Fish your favorite terrestrial pattern like a Super Beetle or Stimulator, and drop a little pheasant tail or BWO nymph off the back.
13. Jackson Lake – Huge Fish on a Fly Rod
Located in Grand Teton National Park, Jackson Lake offers some outstanding angling opportunities. Originally formed by glacial gouging, the lake was enlarged by the Jackson Lake Dam in 1911. There are numerous species in the lake including Snake River Finespotted Cutthroat trout, Mountain Whitefish, Brown Trout, and Lake Trout. The Lake Trout in Jackson Lake are huge; the WY state record is 50lb and it came out of Jackson Lake. These monsters spend most of the year in deep water (70-200ft), but when the ice starts to melt in the spring, you can find them cruising the shallows looking for food. Bring a 9ft, 6-7wt rod and plenty of baitfish patterns. I like Clouser Minnows, Double Bunnies, and White Woolly Buggers.
14. Flaming Gorge Reservoir – Fly Fishing Variety
The Flaming Gorge Reservoir coves 65 square miles in south-western Wyoming. This massive water body was formed by the damming of the Green River, and it is home to numerous species including Brown Trout, Lake Trout, Rainbow Trout, Smallmouth Bass, Kokanee Salmon and Carp. The best time to target bass is during the summer, while the trout and salmon fishing is better during the spring.
While the trophy-sized trout draw many anglers to the lake, sight fishing to carp cruising the bank is a lot of fun. Bring a 9ft, 6wt rod, long fluorocarbon leaders, and some buggy Hares Ears Size 12 or Green or brown Mohair Leech patterns. Delicate presentation is mandatory to hook into these skittish and incredibly strong fish.
15. Big Laramie River – Tributary to a Legend
The Big Laramie River is a tributary of the North Platte River, and it is a legendry wild brown trout fishery. The best public access is located outside of Woods Landing, WY on Highway 10.
The brown trout in this river average between 10 and 16 inches, but there are some absolute monsters in this river that push 10 pounds. There are significant agricultural demands on the Big Laramie River, so the best time to visit this river is the spring or fall. Bring Stimulators, Grey Drakes, BWOs and some nasty articulated streamers.
Recommended Gear for Fly Fishing in Wyoming
Wyoming has some incredible fly fishing opportunities, but you need to bring the right gear. A 9ft, 6wt rod will serve you well on most rivers and lakes in WY. Wyoming is notorious for its wind and weather events, so you want to be sure to pack an extra layer and plan ahead. Always carry bear spray when you are in bear country. While you want to carry BWOs and PMDs, big bugs are usually the name of the game in WY. Purple Chubbies and Super Beetles are my favorites, but make sure to carry some streamer patterns in white, olive and black.

12 Top-Rated Fly Fishing Destinations in Wyoming
Written by Anietra Hamper and Karen Hastings Updated Apr 26, 2024
Wyoming stars in the fantasies of freshwater fly anglers around the globe. More than 27,000 miles of fishable wild rivers and crystal-clear trout streams slice through this sparsely populated state, and trout lakes sparkle amid soaring peaks and high mountain meadows.
Names like the Snake , the North Platte , and the Green River are legendary among fly anglers for their big fish and beautiful settings. In fact, some of the state's best fisheries lie in the country's most spectacular wilderness areas. Yellowstone National Park holds one of the world's highest concentrations of public lakes and streams, and Grand Teton National Park , the Wind River Range , and the Bighorn Mountains are home to rivers, streams, and lakes brimming with fish.
More than 22 species of gamefish swim in Wyoming's waters, but the state is most famous for its trout, including cutthroat, brook, brown, lake, and rainbow trout. Cutthroat is the only trout native to Wyoming, and if you catch all four native subspecies you can earn a Cutt-Slam certificate from Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
Before you venture out on your fly fishing adventure, note that in Wyoming, anglers on waters that flow through private land must remain in their vessels. Shore fishing or wading is only allowed with permission from the landowner.
Also a word of caution: many of these fishing destinations are in prime bear habitat. Always pack bear spray and stay a safe and respectful distance from wildlife. Finally, for local conditions, Wyoming trout fishing regulations, permits, guided trips, and recommended fly patterns, contact local fly fishing shops in each region.
Given the extensive wilderness waters available to fish, the many ways to enjoy fly fishing in Wyoming from float to wading, and the various weather conditions that impact waters daily and seasonally, it is best to hire a guide who can factor in all of these elements and get you onto the waters that have the best chance of success during your visit.
Find the best places to cast your line with our list of the top fly fishing destinations in Wyoming.
1. Yellowstone National Park
2. jackson hole, 3. the wind river range, 4. miracle mile and the gray reef, north platte river, 5. yellowstone river, upper clarks fork, 6. pinedale, 7. grand teton national park, 8. tongue river, bighorn mountains, 9. the big laramie and little laramie, 10. flaming gorge reservoir, 11. bighorn river, thermopolis, 12. two ocean creek, teton wilderness, map of fly fishing destinations in wyoming.
One of the world's great wilderness areas, Yellowstone National Park is legendary for its fantastic fly fishing in a truly awe-inspiring setting of sprawling meadows, steep canyons, and steaming geysers. Few places in the world offer such a high concentration of public lakes and streams .
The park's geothermal activity raises the alkalinity of the streams nurturing healthy populations of trout and providing prime fishing opportunities. You can cast for seven different varieties of game fish in the park, including cutthroat, brown, brook, rainbow, and lake trout, as well as mountain whitefish and grayling. Only the latter two species and cutthroat are native to the park.
Yellowstone Lake is one of the most popular places to fish in the park with plenty of bank access. You can catch native cutthroat trout along with brook, brown, rainbow, and lake trout. Yellowstone National Park has a program in place to help restore the cutthroat trout populations so anglers are required to take or kill any invasive lake trout that they catch in the lake.
Soda Butte Creek is another prime location to target and a great option for those who are newer to fly fishing because it its wide-open space for long casts . Soda Butte Creek flows through the Lamar Valley so you are surrounded by a vast landscape and free-roaming wildlife.
Seasonal fluctuations impact where the best fishing is in the park in any given season. Anglers keen to fish in the spring should head to the Firehole River for nymph fishing, as it's the first to clear from snow melt - usually in May after Memorial Day weekend.
In early June, the Madison and Gibbon Rivers and Yellowstone Lake are usually ready to fish, and by July, most park waters are clear and fishable. July and August are the prime months , with typically clear weather and frequent hatches. August is also the best time to fish the lakes ( Heart Lake is a favorite).
During September and October, the Lamar River and Slough Creek are prime spots as are the Firestone and Madison, when their water temperature drops. October is also great for catching large migrating fish in the Lewis River . Fly fishing in this area of Wyoming in September and October is also when wildlife can be quite active. Keep a keen eye out for bison, especially in the river meadows, as well as both grizzlies and black bears.

Jackson Hole offers access to some of the most diverse fly fishing opportunities in the United States. True to its name, the Snake River slithers through the valley, offering fantastic fishing nooks with populations of Snake River fine-spotted cutthroat, as well as small numbers of brown trout.
Famous for its large dry fly fishing, the river is the heart of the watershed. It's ideal for fast-paced float fishing but also provides access for wading.
The best times to fish the Snake River are early spring before the runoff and mid-summer through October after the runoff. The Snake River also runs through Grand Teton National Park with plenty of productive water and incredible scenery.
In the National Elk Refuge , two miles north of the town of Jackson, Flat Creek is Wyoming's first fly-fishing-only stream. If you're looking for some DIY fly fishing in Jackson Hole, this is a great spot. It's a challenging creek to fish due to its clear, calm water, but sight fishing is excellent and it can yield big Snake River cutthroat and great dry fly action. Casting is also made easy by the absence of vegetation along the river. This section of Flat Creek opens August 1 through October 31.
Easily accessible from Highway 191, the Hoback River is a great place to cast if you're a beginner, with easy access for wading and a good population of receptive Snake River cutthroat. The Gros Ventre River is also a popular fishing source in the area, also due to its easy accessibility. Unlike the Hoback River, the Gros Ventre lies farther from the road and offers a more peaceful fishing experience.
Other prime areas near Jackson include the Buffalo River , Pacific Creek , and beginner-friendly Granite Creek .
Due to runoff from snowmelt, timing is an important element in planning a fly fishing trip to Jackson Hole. Depending on the area, runoff usually begins around mid-May and continues into the beginning of July.

With countless high-elevation lakes, beautiful streams, and wild rivers, the Wind River Range in Western Wyoming offers a rewarding fly fishing adventure in a setting of timeless beauty. Soaring 13,000-foot peaks and abundant wildlife add an edge to fishing in this remote location, and it's a great destination to explore on a backpacking or guided horseback trip.
Fish species found here include cutthroat trout, brook, rainbow, and notoriously big golden trout. Wyoming's record 11-pound golden trout was hooked here at Cook Lakes in 1948. Though this species of fish hasn't been stocked here since the 1990s, they still thrive in certain lakes - especially on the west side of the range.
The east side of the range, from Dubois south to Lander, is less frequently fished and more difficult to access due to the Wind River Indian Reservation, which borders it. You need to purchase a tribal license and hire a tribal guide to access trailheads within the reservation. However, you may be well rewarded for the effort, as the Fitzpatrick Wilderness Area , best accessed over the reservation, has some of the prime lakes with the biggest goldens.
Spring and fall are the best times to fish in this region, although the weather is not reliable at this time of the year. Snow can render some lakes inaccessible until August.
Names like the Miracle Mile and the Gray Reef on the North Platte River are legendary among fly anglers. The North Platte River is a tailwater fishery, so fishing is possible at any time of year, however, fish spawn here, so take care not to disturb the eggs when wading these waters. Rainbow trout spawn during the spring, and brown trout spawn during the fall.
In remote Central Wyoming, about 60 miles from Casper, the easily accessible Miracle Mile section of the North Platte actually extends for five to eight miles and is famous for its fighting trophy trout . Fish thrive in these waters due to the plentiful food, cold water, and relatively low fishing pressure, and the dominant species are rainbow trout, brown trout, and cutthroat.
Miracle Mile is predominantly a nymph fishery, but large streamer patterns are a good choice for luring bigger fish. Dry fly fishing yields success on the right days. Features of the river include pocket water, riffles, runs, and large boulders. River flows can vary dramatically here, so make sure you check conditions before heading out.
Near the town of Alcova, the Gray Reef is a tailwater section of the North Platte River , famous for its huge rainbows, browns, and cutthroats. Fish from eight to 12 pounds are frequently hooked here. Nymph fishing, dry fly fishing, and streamer fishing all yield success. Access can be difficult here due to private land ownership, so floating the river in a drift boat is the best way to fish these waters.
Catching a native cutthroat trout is a bucket-list achievement for many fly-fishing anglers and the many tributaries like the Upper Clarks Fork that flow from the Yellowstone River are where you can find them. Some of the smaller streams of the Upper Clarks Fork are shallow and wadable as you make your way upstream targeting the seams of fast-moving water and small pools around boulders where the trout like to hide.
More experienced anglers or those with a guide to coach for various techniques can fit into the tight spaces of narrow waters like Dead Indian Creek . The cutthroat trout are small but plentiful here and require stealth movement in the water. Be aware of your shadows that can hover over the pools and spook the fish, especially in the morning sunlight that progressively changes.
The Upper Clarks Fork also features wider spaces like Sunlight Creek where anglers can wade with just wet booties and wading boots in the summer. The open space allows for easier fly casting in the shallow water. Sunlight Creek has many brook trout that are caught with nearly every cast.
To fish the Upper Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River your best bet is to base in the town of Cody and hire a guide to take you to the sections that are most suitable for the time of your visit. Rainfall and spring snowmelt dramatically impact the water levels and clarity so conditions are always changing. The Upper Clark Fork sections are about an hour's drive into the mountains so you will experience some of the most scenic views in the region.
At the foot of the magnificent Wind River Mountains, the little ranching town of Pinedale provides access to some of the state's most hallowed fishing grounds, including the Green River and the New Fork . Both rivers offer excellent drift boat fishing and wading, and you can also cast from the bank.
The Green River, with riffles, runs, pocket water, and pools, is by far the largest of the two rivers. It begins its journey in the northern Wind River Range, and its upper reaches lie in the Bridger-Teton National Forest . Outside of this area, much of the river flows through private land, so it's important to check for public access. You'll find eight miles of public access just upstream from Warren Bridge on Highway 187, north of Daniel.
The New Fork flows from New Fork Lakes to the Green River and is well suited to more experienced anglers. Fish species found in the Pinedale area include native Colorado cutthroat and mountain whitefish, as well as brown, golden, rainbow, brook, and lake trout.
Fishing season on the Green usually begins around mid-June. Trips into the west side of the rugged and beautiful Wind River Range also leave from Pinedale.
Crowned by the jagged peaks of the Teton Mountain Range, Grand Teton National Park, about 10 minutes from the town of Jackson, offers one of the most spectacular settings for fly fishing in the country. The Snake River flows through the park, offering plenty of bends and banks for shore fishing and a breathtaking drift boat experience.
Also within the park, Jenny Lake offers easy access for anglers and more stunning scenery. You can fish for both cutthroat and lake trout from the banks on the hiking trail that rings the lake, or launch a boat from the ramp on the lake's south side. The best time to fish this lake is after the ice melts, which typically occurs around mid-May.
Jackson Lake also offers decent fly fishing for lake trout and mackinaw after the ice melts in the spring, before the water warms up and the fish swim deeper. Fishing from shore can be successful at this time, as the fish swim the shallow waters in search of baitfish. A state record 50-pound mackinaw was caught here. From mid-September when the water temperatures start to drop, the lake trout begin to spawn, and the lake is closed during October to protect spawning Mackinaws.
Fly fishing for cutthroat and lake trout in Leigh Lake is best done from a canoe since the lake lacks shore access. You can paddle from String Lake to the portage point, then carry the canoe the short distance to Leigh Lake. The ice typically melts here around mid-May. Anglers will also find a couple of productive streams to fish within the park's borders.

High in the Bighorn Mountains of north-central Wyoming, the Tongue River is a tributary of the Yellowstone River. Steeped in Native American history, it's often overlooked by anglers but yields fantastic fishing for all abilities in a beautiful setting.
The river starts in the Bighorn National Forest , west of Sheridan, and was named for a distinctive rock formation that the Crow Indians thought resembled the tongue of a bison. You can access most of the fishing spots from the Bighorn Scenic Byway . In the South Tongue , fish species are mostly small rainbows, browns, and brook trout, and the latter can be kept for the frying pan.
Fly fishing in the Bighorn Mountains can be excellent. The clear waters here feature pocket water, runs, and pools, and they're a great place for less experienced anglers. The fertile North Tongue waters yield much bigger fish, including cutthroats up to 20 inches, as well as rainbows, brown, and brook trout, but they are more challenging to hook.
Above the mouth of Bull Creek, all trout except brook trout are strictly catch-and-release. Accessible only on foot along rugged boulder-strewn trails, the section of the river that cuts through the steep-walled canyon serves up stunning scenery and supports healthy populations of rainbow and brown trout, as well as cutthroats.
Hiking deep into the canyon leads to some rarely-fished nooks in peaceful surroundings. The best time to fish the Tongue River is after the runoff ends , usually in early July, as well as early fall .
In southeastern Wyoming, the Big Laramie River is known for its excellent wild brown trout fishing , but sections of the river are also stocked with rainbow trout.
The most beautiful stretch of the Big Laramie River that's accessible to the public is the Jelm Access , 30 miles west of Laramie off Wyoming State Highway 230, then south on Wyoming State Highway 10 (near Woods Landing). This section of the river runs through a relatively small canyon with faster water, overhanging banks, and pocket water. Wading is the best way to fish these waters, and the best time is from mid-May to the beginning of July and in the fall.
The Little Laramie River can yield trophy trout, but they are far more challenging to catch. Stalking the fish is often required along this stretch. Access can also be a little more difficult due to the surrounding stretches of private land. Make sure you request permission from landowners or hire a private guide.
Stretching south from the town of Green River and slicing through the border between Wyoming and Utah, Flaming Gorge Reservoir offers a diversity of species and is known for its big fish .
The Green River feeds these waters, which flow through a steep red-walled canyon and are home to species such as Mackinaw trout, rainbow trout, tiger trout, channel catfish, Kokanee salmon, carp, burbot, and smallmouth bass. World record German brown trout were caught here in the 70s and 80s, as well as state record lake trout, brown trout, and rainbow trout. Today, trout in excess of 20 pounds are still hooked.
Early spring is the best time to fish for trout species and salmon, while bass are more active in the summer when the water is warmer. You can sight cast for carp in shallow water usually from June. Access to the reservoir is through Green River on Highway 530 or the town of Rock Springs on Highway 191. Both boat and shore fishing are possible here.
The little town of Thermopolis is best known for its mineral pools at Hot Springs State Park, one of the top attractions in Wyoming , but it's also a top spot for fishing. Officially the Wind River becomes the Bighorn River at the "Wedding of the Waters," and only about 20 miles downstream of this offers water cool enough to support trout year-round.
Serenity, solitude, and a high density of large fish are the top draws at this remote tailwater of the Bighorn River, and anglers have the chance to hook rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout here.
The Bighorn is open for fishing year-round and is excellent for dry-fly, nymph, and streamer fishing. March through July are the prime times, with heavy hatches and excellent dry-fly action. Fall fishing is also good.
Access to the river is made easy by the fact that the municipality owns most of the Bighorn River around Thermopolis, so you can wade upstream or downstream from public access points to cast your line, as long as you stay below the high-water mark. You can also float the river, but check with locals for details and dangers before you set out.
Adjacent to the south end of Yellowstone National Park , Teton Wilderness encompasses more than a half million acres and is home to a fascinating phenomenon found nowhere else on the continent . Along the Continental Divide here, the famous Two Ocean Creek forks and flows to two different oceans : the Atlantic and Pacific.
The first creek, appropriately called Atlantic Creek , flows into the Yellowstone River and on to the Atlantic Ocean, while Pacific Creek flows into the Snake River and eventually feeds into the Pacific Ocean. More than 450 miles of trails lead to fantastic fishing areas and beautiful plateau country featuring lodgepole forests and sprawling meadows.
This is prime cutthroat country . In early summer, they migrate from Yellowstone Lake up the Yellowstone River to spawn in the Teton Wilderness. Thorofare Creek is particularly good for cutthroat fishing, but you can also cast a line to them in some of the tributaries. Keep an eye out for grizzlies in this area and always carry bear spray.

Wyoming waters we guide, north platte river.
The North Platte River has its beginnings in the high mountains of Colorado, entering Wyoming as a freestone river. As the river continues across Wyoming, a series of dams creates tailwaters and a variety of trout fishing scenarios in excellent trout habitat.
Long recognized as a Blue Ribbon trout fishery, the people of Wyoming, along with both state and federal agencies, have worked together to ensure this resource is protected. The North Platte River from the Wyoming line to Casper is managed first and foremost as a trout fishery. Development and livestock grazing are limited, and water flow is closely monitored in order to produce superior trout habitat.
Crazy Rainbow Fly Fishing Guides Wyoming Waters
Includes North Platte Blue Ribbon Fly Fishing, Grey Reef Tail Waters, Miracle Mile, Fremont Canyon, Big Horn River and Wyoming Lakes
Blue ribbon fly fishing.
Much of the North Platte River runs through the checkerboard land ownership pattern common in western states. The streambank and underlying river bottom along private land is not accessible to the public. Because of this land ownership pattern, private access is a large part of what makes fishing the North Platte with Crazy Rainbow so unique. We own large parcels of land adjacent to the river where our clients can walk/wade and enter/exit the river whenever they please.
Three notable stretches of the river are viewed as prime fly fishing spots: the Grey Reef tailwaters, Fremont Canyon, and Miracle Mile. Crazy Rainbow also guides the Big Horn River at the end of the Wind River Canyon.
The Wind River widens out in an area called the Wedding of the Waters where it becomes the Big Horn River and enters the Big Horn Basin nationally known for its Blue Ribbon Fishing.

Winter Fly Fishing in Wyoming
Winter is our favorite season for wade fishing on the North Platte. Flows are low, most the weeds will have vanished, and the fish are piled up in the tail outs of deep runs. Temperatures are not as bad as people would think. Wyoming has a “dry cold” and when temps hit 30 degrees or more and the sun is shining, it is actually quite pleasant. Winter is also less windy than Spring which makes for easier casting when wade fishing. Our favorite Winter months on the Miracle Mile are late November and December when the amount of big lake run brown trout out of Pathfinder is at its peak. Late February is also the best time to catch more 20″ or bigger rainbows than you can count on the Upper Grey Reef Section. Why? We’re glad you asked! The upper 8 miles from Grey Reef to Lusby holds the best spawning habitat on the river. During February all the mature rainbows (the bigger fish) from the entire river migrate up into the upper 8 miles of river. They are not yet spawning at this time, but are definitely on the feed in preparation for the spawn to come. The combination of hungry fish and a huge density of really big fish makes February absolutely incredible!
Spring Fly Fishing in Wyoming
If you want to hook 100 fish in a day, come float the North Platte with us anytime from March until June. In March, we primarily fish the Grey Reef section during its pre-spawn period. Like February, these fish are still feeding heavily and there is the highest number of mature 20″ or bigger fish in the upper 8 miles. The Grey Reef to Lusby section generally holds about 8,000 fish per mile. From March through June however, that number is probably more like 14,000 fish per mile (and a lot of those fish are big). Typically in late March the Wyoming Game and Fish conduct the annual flushing flows designed to clear the spawning areas of sediment. This flushing flow lasts for 5 days and flows will gradually increase overnight to a peak of about 3000CFS and by morning flows will return to typical winter/spring flows of 500CFS. Fishing during the flush is absolutely insane because so much food is dislodged that sends Grey Reef trout on an absolute feeding binge! After the 5 day flushing period, fish begin to actively spawn from April through most of May.
Summer Fly Fishing in Wyoming
Summer Fly Fishing is best described as consistent. Typical summer flows are 2,000 CFS or higher depending on snow melt and demand for water downstream of Grey Reef Dam. June marks the post spawn period where the mature fish begin moving off the spawning beds and slowly disperse into the runs & spread across the entire river. Once July rolls around, the Upper Grey Reef section becomes very weedy and we begin to focus almost all our efforts on the portions of river from Government Bridge all the way to Casper. This is also the time of year, where we tend to fish a lot of dry flies and streamers out of the boat. Higher Summer flows tend to push fish towards the banks and fish tend to notice a dry fly. Fish on the banks also tend to be very grabby on a streamer. The lower river also has a lot more structure which tends to result in a higher brown trout population. If fishing a variety of different water & tactics is something you like, come see us in the Summer.
Fall Fly Fishing in Wyoming
Fall Fly Fishing in Wyoming on the North Platte is great on about every stretch of the river. In September flows usually drop to 500CFS and the water is generally very clear. During September and October is the brief window of opportunity to float the North Platte river below Casper. The numbers of fish are drastically lower than portions of the North Platte above Casper, but the fish are large and highly carnivorous. Since there is less fish, the water has to be both clear and low to make it worthwhile. Low water helps to concentrate the fish, and clear water never hurts. If you haven’t floated this stretch, you MUST try it. It’s a stretch you’ll never forget. In mid-October, browns begin to put on their fall colors and bad attitudes in preparation for the fall spawn. Similar to rainbows in the Spring, browns also migrate to the upper portion of the river to spawn which creates a high density of very large browns from October to November on Grey Reef. Brown trout on the Miracle Mile are historically late spawning fish. Generally, the browns on the Mile begin to show up in late October with the highest density of browns being in December. If you are looking for a brown trout of a lifetime, fall fly fishing on the North Platte is your best chance in the lower 48.

Fly Fishing the Cowboy State
Wyoming is home to Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Teton, and the headwaters of the Yellowstone and Bighorn Rivers. Wyoming also boasts several species of native cutthroat trout, hundreds of miles of difficult to access rivers and creeks, and a rich tradition of western hospitality. All of this within the least populated state in the union.
What Wyoming lacks in people, it makes up for when it comes to trout fishing. Wyoming is home to some heavy hitters—the North Platte, the Bighorn, the Wind, the Snake, and several other well-known rivers. But, with Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures you will have exclusive opportunity to fish some of the West’s most difficult to access waters. The Wind River Canyon, Brush Creek, and French Creek are a few of these gems and Yellow Dog’s expert staff knows them well.
We have hand-picked a selection of guest ranches and lodges for anglers and their non-angling companions to enjoy the rugged yet accommodating nature of the Cowboy State.

Snake River Angler Fly Fishing Report for June 2nd, 2024
Snake River
Flows from Jackson Lake Dam stand at 3,500cfs. Fishing has been most productive in the spillway, in deep eddies with slow recirculating eddies, and in some riffles (pretty much in that order). Going deep is the name of the game with leader lengths running seven to eight feet from trailing fly to line/suspension device. Streamers are working in the same water but also when fished along submerged structure and banks with steep-ish drop-offs. Both moderately sized and larger patterns are producing, although moderately sized imitations are getting into more fish. Moderate retrieves is the way to go. Streamers are almost the only game in town below Oxbow Bend.
Flows from Palisades Reservoir are at roughly 10,000cfs. The South Fork is looking good with at least decent fishing on all reaches with the upper sections from the Dam down to Black Canyon. Water temps are going over 45 degrees in Swan Valley and close to 50 degrees in the lower canyon. There has been decent surface action with BWOs and caddis emerging here and there. Nonetheless, going subsurface with double/triple nymph rigs and streamers has been very productive. Nymph rigs should be directed towards riffles (particularly inside turns), seams, confluences, and side channels.
Streamers are working in the same water as well as on eddy current margins, troughs, and banks. Fish both moderately sized and larger patterns on sinking tips in the INT to 3ips range, especially on the lower river. Go with slow to moderate retrieves with hesitations every now and then. Bright and neutral streamers are working better than darker counterparts.
Henry’s Fork
Damn near every piece of water that is open on the Henry’s Fork is fishing strong. Caddis continue to pop as do March browns (at least in a smattering fashion) and a few PMDs. Salmon flies are out pretty strong and have covered everything below Mesa Falls. It’s not as intense as some years, but their imitations are worth using. If fishing mayfly and caddis patterns, target riffles, seams, eddies, and banks. You focus on the same water if using salmon fly imitations, but concentrate mostly on submerged structure, banks, eddies, and the head of seams.
Yellowstone National Park
Lewis Lake – Ice is off. There is decent fishing on the flats but, despite it being early in the year, target drop-offs primarily. Best action is in the four to six foot depth of the water column, but there are times when you must go deeper – sometimes in the 10-12 foot range (use a Clean Sweep line at this depth, shallower depths are fishing best with full-sink INT lines). Baitfish imitations are the name of the game. Go small primarily. Clousers, Seal Buggers, and Pine Squirrel Zonkers are producing best.
Yellowstone Lake – Ice is off and Yellowstone is fishing very good at the moment. The best action is occurring on flats and the head of drop-offs. Hover lines, full sink intermediates, and long (12-15 foot) sinking tips in the INT to 3ips range has been most effective. Go with baitfish imitations, dragonfly patterns, and damsel imitations primarily. Slow to moderate retrieves have been most productive with baitfish imitations. Dragonfly and damsel imitations should be fished with hand-twist/figure-8 or pinch retrieves.
Madison and Firehole Rivers – We are a week after opening and fishing on both the Madison and the Firehole has been typical of early season. There are caddis about in bits and pieces, as well as PMDs and midges and BWOs (the latter two when the right weather is in the cards). Salmon flies have been spotted on the Madison as far upstream as Riverside. Expect this emergence to be up at the confluence in the next few days, if not hours! Riffles and seams have been active with the best production coming on caddis larva/pupa imitations. Eddies can offer good production with deep running nymph rigs. This is especially the case from Midway Geyser up to Biscuit Basin.
Lewis and Snake Rivers – the Snake is in full runoff but the Lewis is clear and fairly warm for this time of year. There is also a good amount of flow on the latter, so be a bit picky about the water you are targeting. Streamers are working well at the confluence. Double nymph rigs are as well when fished in the seven-foot range. Go with either moderately sized or large streamer patterns and target submerged structure and confluence lines.
