You’ve probably been on a layover in Abu Dhabi before, but now’s the time to make an actual visit. The history and luxury of the city are as inviting as ever , especially with pleasant temperatures from December to March. For the aviation geeks out there, the emirate’s new Midfield Terminal, now called Terminal A, will finally open this November, expanding passenger and cargo capacity in the Middle Eastern hub. Expect new lounges, retail stores, restaurants, and more, as one can naturally expect from the UAE’s capital.

Greenland

Icy and mysterious Greenland is one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth. The world’s biggest non-continental island is so much more than glaciers (but yes, the glaciers are spectacular). Think magnificent fjords, colorful villages, and fields of sheep. Throw in some northern lights appearances, and you have yourself one unbeatable winter destination .

Boracay, Philippines

Consistently voted one of the best islands in Asia in our Readers’ Choice Awards, Boracay is a perennial favorite of locals and tourists alike. The idyllic white sand beaches were so popular with visitors that, at one point, the authorities had to prohibit tourism for a while to let the land and community rehabilitate. But now it’s back in business, ready to welcome those looking to relax and unwind , or party the night away—or both.

Italian Dolomites

Dolomites, Italy

If the Alps is the destination for glitzy ski towns, then consider the Dolomites its chiller, cozier cousin . Also known as “the Pale Mountains,” its powdery slopes can be accessed via the 86-mile Great Dolomites Road, one of the world’s most beautiful alpine drives, offering beautiful views of Italy ’s best wintery landscapes.

Cape Town

It may seem counterintuitive to fly to an island for the cool weather, it’s exactly that brisk and fresh feeling that’ll enchant you in the Azores , an archipelago in the middle of the North Atlantic. All that lush greenery and pleasant chill will let you discover a new kind of sweater weather. And it’s just a five-hour flight from the US.

Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone National Park

No matter the season, Yellowstone is always a good idea. Famous sites at the oldest of all US national parks (established in 1872) include the Old Faithful geyser and the Grand Prismatic Spring, but truly, every single acre of the park is worth seeing in person. Visiting in the winter is a good way to avoid the summer crowds; you'll be greeting by landscapes filled with steam from the thermal features.

Copenhagen

When you visit the birthplace of hygge (the Danish concept of “coziness”), you better believe your winter vacation is going to be aces. That feeling can be found throughout Copenhagen , from pastry shops to inviting hotels .

Navagio Beach Zakynthos Greece

Zakynthos, Greece

All Greek islands seem to be framed by that killer shade of emerald blue, but there’s something about the white sand beaches and brilliant waters at Navagio Bay in Zakynthos that will make your heart skip a beat. Maybe it’s the secluded location (it’s sheltered on either side by soaring cliffs) that keeps its aquamarine waters so perfect and pure—basically the exact opposite of winter grays.

Best Places to Travel in December Salzburg at Christmas

Salzburg, Austria

Classic Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, sits divided by the Salzach River: Its pedestrian Old City lines the left bank, and the (slightly) newer side is on the right. For a hotel stay involving gingerbread cookies, fluffy beds, and views of falling snow, look no further than Hotel Goldener Hirsch .

Isla Mujeres Mexico

Isla Mujeres, Mexico

While often thought of as a side trip from Cancún, Isla Mujeres is a destination in its own right. The main beach of Playa Norte is made of crushed coral, has warm shallow waters, and is much quieter than the beaches across the bay. Scuba enthusiasts should take note: The island is home to the largest concentration of whale sharks on the planet.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

This Teton-ringed valley is a true winter wonderland. Of course, it helps if you want to spend most of your time skiing— Jackson Hole is known for its 3,000 acres of both accessible backcountry terrain and challenging vertical slopes. But even if you don’t want to hit the powder, you can still indulge in après-ski diversions in both Teton Village and the town of Jackson. And let’s face it: Any excuse to cozy up in Caldera House is valid.

Have you been to Luxor, home of Egypt’s most iconic destinations like the imposing Colossi of Memnon and the Valley of the Kings, where you can visit the tomb of King Tutankhamun. You can visit Roatán on one of Virgin Voyages’ Caribbean cruises , which counts the Honduran island among its many port stops.

Hotel Del Coronado San Diego California

San Diego, California

Welcome to the unofficial Christmas (merchandise) capital of the United States, where two megastores selling Christmas decorations draw holiday enthusiasts to San Diego year-round. Hokkaido Japan

Hokkaido, Japan

The Japanese island of Hokkaido is blessed with myriad geological beauties (think volcanoes, national parks, and lakes)—most are even more stunning in winter. For example, the ethereal Shirogane Blue Pond wears ice beautifully, with its towering trees and azure waters coated in glimmering frost. Looking to ski? The slopes of Niseko are among the finest in the world.

Winter escapes Gran Canaria Canary Islands

Canary Islands, Spain

It’s not quite hot enough to swim off the white sand beaches of Spain ’s Canary Islands in the winter, but to make up for it, there are fewer crowds, ever-impressive views, and off-season prices on this cluster of volcanic isles. For what it’s worth, the island of Gran Canaria, just off northwestern Africa, is said to have the best climate in the world.

Zermatt Switzerland

Zermatt, Switzerland

Zermatt, surrounded by some of the Alps’ tallest peaks, has 223 miles of runs in four huge ski areas —some at an altitude of over 10,000 feet, meaning snow here lingers for a very long season. This enchanting Alpine village lies at the foot of the Matterhorn, Switzerland ’s most famous mountain, and has plenty of modern touches, like its state-of-the-art lift system and swanky après-ski diversions.

Whitsunday Islands Australia

Whitsunday Islands, Australia

Coastal Mississippi sign

1. Coastal Mississippi

“If you prefer white sand over white snow, then Coastal Mississippi , home of the nation’s longest man-made beach, is a dream destination. “The Secret Coast” celebrates seafood all year but white shrimp and oysters are in their prime during the winter. Enjoy an early round of golf or explore the Mississippi Coastal Birding Trail . Enjoy art museums and casinos, but don’t miss sunset at the beach. I visited in February 2022.

“Spend a six-hour tour aboard a fishing boat. During the winter, the reefs near to the shore are the main target. Redfish, black drum, and sheepshead are the main attractions, with speckled trout and flounder as understudies. Some restaurants will cook your catch.

Pro Tip: “Buy a Coastal Mississippi Attractions Pass , which provides admission for one to 10 area attractions. The pass comes straight to your phone, ready to use. Attractions include the Biloxi Lighthouse , the fascinating Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum , and the Pascagoula River Audubon Center .” — Roxie Yonkey

2. Frankenmuth, Michigan

“Although a visit to Frankenmuth (an easy 90-minute drive north from Detroit ) is enjoyable year-round , the city known as ‘Michigan’s Little Bavaria’ really shines at Christmas time . The streets are lined with confectionaries that will draw you in with the tantalizing aroma of fresh fudge and boutiques selling goods that will make quick work of your holiday gift list.

“Make sure to stay in the know about special events in advance of your trip by keeping tabs on what the visitor’s center has planned, from scavenger hunts to ice skating to horse-drawn carriage rides.

“Frankenmuth is also home to the world’s largest Christmas store, Bronner’s CHRISTmas Wonderland , which is open all year round, but is especially fun to check out during the holidays. Also filed under don’t-miss experiences are the world-famous chicken dinner at Zehnder’s of Frankenmuth and checking out the glockenspiel at the Bavarian Inn daily at noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m., and 9 p.m.

Pro Tips: “ Layer up to stay warm outdoors without getting too sweaty indoors. Plan to eat early and make dining reservations. Frankenmuth rolls up the sidewalks early and trying to find dinner after 7 p.m. might leave you hungry if you haven’t planned ahead.” — Jill Robbins

Yacht Basin, Hilton Head Island

3. Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

“One of my favorite winter vacation destinations is Hilton Head Island , South Carolina. We’re still exploring snowbird destinations , but this is one we keep coming back to. It’s a welcome reprieve from the cold and snow of Minnesota, and we love the 12 miles of sandy beaches, the more than 60 miles of paved bike paths (since we are big fans of biking ), and the abundant seafood and flavors of the Lowcountry. It’s also popular for golf and boutique shopping.

“We like to stay in or near Harbour Town and enjoy the lighthouse and pier (great place to spot dolphins) and see the deluxe yachts in the Yacht Basin. The sunsets over the harbor on Calibogue Sound are the exclamation point on this great destination. Hilton Head has been a favorite of ours for several years and I’m happy to say we have plans to visit again in 2023.” — Joan Sherman

4. Interlaken, Switzerland

“I’m a little biased when it comes to Switzerland . I love how the Swiss live their best life. From floating down the Rhine River at lunchtime to hitting the slopes in the Jungfrau region , Switzerland is an outdoor playground.

“On a recent ski trip to Interlaken , I explored the Jungfraujoch Top of Europe , a mountain-top observation destination 3,454 meters (11,332 feet) above sea level. With observation decks, snack bars, and gift shops, Top of Europe is a fun way to spend an afternoon viewing brilliant snow-covered Bernese Alps.

“The Ice Palace , carved with picks and saws from the frozen ice mass in the 1930s, is a frosty and slippery adventure through the mountain. Everything is ice — walls, ceilings, and floors. Ice artists carve stunning works of art in the wall’s nooks along the frozen pathway. Even with hats and mittens, you need a steaming cup of Swiss hot cocoa to round out this frosty adventure.” — Sandi Barrett

5. Lake George, New York

“ Lake George, New York , is one of the few places that lured this Southerner to visit during the winter. I visited four years ago but would love to go back. Expect a lovely place in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains for snowmobiling, dining, special events like ice carving, and outdoor ice bars.

“The  Lake George Winter Carnival  takes place every weekend in February, with lots of wintery fun. Highlights include chowder and chili cook-offs, fireworks, ATV races, and the highly anticipated outhouse race. Besides the Winter Carnival, enjoy a delicious meal (including creamy Liver pâté) from Caldwell House and drink great beer and trivia Thursday nights at  Adirondack Brewery .

“There are two awesome places to stay in Lake George.  Holiday Inn Resort Lake George  has a welcoming lobby, fireplace, spacious rooms, and an outdoor fire pit. It is also close to ski trails. Or, in nearby Bolton Landing is  The Sagamore Resort . Built in 1883, the historic luxury property features award-winning dining and activities.” — Melody Pittman

“ Nevis is the perfect antidote to the winter blues. There’s plenty of Caribbean sunshine to thaw cold bones, but not a lot of tourists, which is one of the things I like most. Here, you’ll have quiet peace of mind. The beauty of Nevis is the inactive volcano, mountains that are often shrouded in mist, and yes, that Caribbean Sea.

“A walk through The Botanical Gardens of Nevis , with tropical plants from around the world and stunning artwork, is serene. One of my favorite places is The Rocks restaurant at the Golden Rock Inn, with its sea views, cascading ponds, and lush gardens. My sanctuary on Nevis was the Four Seasons Resort on Pinney’s Beach. As I sat seaside, nestled by rocks, watching the sunset at the resort’s Mango restaurant, it confirmed I was indeed in paradise.” Sheryl Nance-Nash

Jackson Square in New Orleans

7. New Orleans, Louisiana

“The winter months are the perfect time to visit the fabulous city of New Orleans , Louisiana, and my favorite time is the week after Christmas. The mild temperatures during the winter months mean the weather is usually ideal for exploring the streets of the French Quarter and Garden District. Enjoy eating beignets on the patio of Cafe Du Monde before walking through the famous Jackson Square . Don’t miss wandering down Royal Street , admiring the gorgeous antique shops, and popping into the fun and unique art galleries that line the street.

“The winter season in New Orleans also means fewer crowds, which also equates to lower prices for lodging. Winter also brings about numerous concerts, festivals , and the opening season of Carnival . Of course, if you are visiting around the holidays, the city is also aglow with holiday lights and festive celebrations, making winter in New Orleans even more spectacular.” — Michelle Snell

8. New Smyrna Beach, Florida

“When winter comes, I’m for staying warm. That’s why I just visited New Smyrna Beach . There’s a variety of things to do. Old Fort Park is a mystery-laden coquina ruins. The most accepted theory is that it was remains of a home built for one of Dr. Andrew Turnbull’s partners on their huge indigo plantation that was the first settlement here. Newer Sugar Mill Ruins once stood on the Cruger and DePeyster Plantation. New Smyrna Museum of History tells the history of New Smyrna Beach. Housed in a restored 19th-century church, the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum offers a glimpse of African American history in New Smyrna.

“ Marine Discovery Center showcases local marine life. In Canaveral National Seashore , take a Viking Eco-Tours kayak tour, visit Turtle Mound, a shell midden dated to 1000 BCE, and visit Eldora, the remnants of a community from 1877. There are lots of dining choices. For lodging, check out Victoria 1883 bed and breakfast.” — Kathleen Walls

9. Ogden, Utah

“I visited Ogden, Utah , last December, and the minute we arrived, I fell in love. It’s the gateway to challenging ski resorts like Powder Mountain and Snowbasin , and plenty of places to cross-country ski or snowshoe nearby. One stroll down Historic 25th Street and you’re transported to a ‘Wild West’ town with tons of history. It’s the place where the Transcontinental Railroad combined the Union and Pacific Railroads. The storefronts from the late 1800s are intact, but house eclectic boutiques and incredible dining venues. The history, art scene, and culture here are combined with wintry activities. It’s the best of both worlds for ski enthusiasts and foodies.” — Jeanine Consoli

10. San Antonio, Texas

“Winters in San Antonio are very mild and rarely get under 60 degrees Fahrenheit. So to escape the winter chill in North Texas, I like to travel south in my car. There are several things to do in San Antonio in the winter — one being the San Antonio River Walk . It’s always lovely for a nice stroll and guided boat tours operate year-round. Restaurants are booming this time of year as well, so if you decide to go, you still may have a wait time.

“Also, the Natural Bridge Caverns are nice to visit in the winter because it’s not so humid in the cave. If you’ve never been to the San Antonio Missions , including the Alamo, winter is a great time to visit for a great Texas History lesson. It’s not as crowded during this time.

Pro Tip: “Bring a heavy jacket if planning to take part in a guided riverboat tour. It does get a little chilly riding on the water.” — Kim Croisant

An early morning ocean view on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands

11. Tenerife, Canary Islands

“The largest of the Spanish Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, Tenerife seemed like paradise when I reviewed photos online, booking my flight soon afterward. It was 2004 when in Mosul, Iraq, in a war zone working an 84-hour workweek when not hiding in a bomb shelter, I needed a pinch of peace and paradise. My condo at the Peria Gris (Pearly Grey) in Callao Salvaje along the southern coast of Tenerife was perfect with its small kitchen, balcony looking out over the ocean, and location in a thriving downtown business area for shopping, dining, and just hanging out.

“The scenery of dramatic cliffs falling straight into the raging turquoise ocean was truly spectacular. Renting a car in three precious days, I drove every winding road along the mountains, hiked trails near the snow-covered Mount Teide volcano , devoured amazing Spanish cuisine and wine, and found peace in paradise. A lot has changed since then, but Tenerife is still paradise no matter what time of year.” — Ann Bush

For even more savings on lift tickets, which cost more when demand is high, visit on weekdays in early December and opt to ski later in the day to cut down on fees for the popular Lone Peak Tram.

Winter in Banff is characterized by snow and skiing. This Canadian destination enjoys excellent skiing conditions with exceptional scenery. What's more, lodging and lift ticket prices are a bargain compared to other ski spots in North America, but you'll need to book them a few months in advance to ensure availability and the best prices. With the money you've saved, you can treat yourself to a sleigh ride or an extra après-ski drink. Though you'll need to purchase a National Park Pass to stay in Banff; this fee also covers access to off-slope wonders like Lake Louise, where you can skate and admire ice sculptures.

Thanks to its location in the Caribbean Sea, Martinique offers ideal weather for travelers seeking a warm respite from chilly winters. Temperatures sit in the 80s throughout winter, so you can spend your days soaking up some sun on Les Salines and Diamant (Diamond) beaches. If you plan on staying in Fort-de-France, the country's capital, book early to ensure you snag affordable accommodations during Martinique's peak tourist season. For additional savings, book a hotel farther inland.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee's wintertime highs sit in the upper 40s and low 50s, meaning you can still take advantage of the town's most popular attraction: Great Smoky Mountains National Park. After entering the national park, which charges a $5 daily parking fee, hike a section of the famous Appalachian Trail to Charlies Bunion, an outcrop with stunning mountain vistas, or trek the Rainbow Falls Trail for a chance to see the path's namesake falls frozen over. When you need to warm up, head back to town to sample the local moonshine at Sugarlands Distilling Company or Ole Smoky Tennessee Moonshine's "The Holler" distillery for a small fee.

It's that time of year: We’re officially past the solstice—meaning some winter sun is most definitely in order. Here, find the best places to visit this winter for a much-needed hit of vitamin D.

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

The Best Places to Visit in Winter for a SunSoaked Escape

Eden Roc at Cap Cana , the sole Relais & Châteaux property in the Dominican Republic, is an exclusive beachfront hotel on the white sands of Punta Cana, making it the ideal winter getaway. Go snorkeling in the wonders of the Caribbean Sea, embark on a zip-line eco-tour, or set sail on a catamaran into the sunset. The resort and beach club also boasts an equestrian center, tennis courts, and a Jack Nicklaus Signature Punta Espada, an 18-hole par-72 golf course.

Seeking a wellness retreat? Eden Roc’s “Lifestyle” program beckons with Natura Bissé spa treatments, fitness classes, and serene activities like meditation, hypnosis, and beekeeping. When night falls, have drinks at Riva Bar with live piano music, and then dinner at La Palapa, perched on the oceanfront point. Plus, amid all that opulence, this sanctuary remains family-friendly: Enjoy complimentary bikes, culinary and mocktail-making classes, and a cinema night, among an endless list of other amenities.

Met Gala 2024 Red Carpet Looks: See Every Celebrity Outfit and Dress from Last Night

A 20-minute road trip from Stellenbosch favorite,  Babylonstoren , Sterrekopje’s 11 rooms are set within 50 hectares of Edenic grounds—complete with vineyards and orchards where guests are invited to gather fruit at sunrise each day. (Even the spa products here are made using spices, herbs and other wonders from the gardens—think calming wildflower baths and olive-pip skin scrubs.) Founded by Dutch partners Nicole Boekhoorn and Fleur Huijskens (who also happen to be a couple), this is a place for a reset without restrictions; you can trek up Sterrekopje mountain in the morning before ending the day with a farm-to-table feast. Much is written about the activities on offer here, and with good reason—everything from pottery classes to yoga and breath work sessions are available—but it’s the interiors that truly won us over. A collaborative effort by founder Nicole and interior designer Greg Mellor, every room is filled with personal touches; take the antique writing boxes and stationery in each one, with guests encouraged to journal throughout their stay. Even if you only check in for the shortest two-night “journey” offered at  Sterrekopje , you leave feeling a decade younger.

Bali, Indonesia

The Best Places to Visit in Winter for a SunSoaked Escape

If you’re looking to reconnect with nature after months cooped up indoors, set your sights on Buahan, A Banyan Tree Escape from March onwards, when the rainy season nears its end. Constructed entirely from recycled wood, the 16 mountainside lodges, or balés, at this eco-resort 40 minutes north of Ubud feature neither windows nor doors, meaning guests fall asleep in four-posters overlooking the forest canopy and soak in copper bathtubs while fireflies dance above them in the dusk. (There are also dedicated “Hideaway” spots scattered across the property, where guests are encouraged to meditate surrounded by birdsong and frangipani.) The food offering, meanwhile, aims to be zero waste, with Balinese chef Eka Sunarya heading up The Open Kitchen, a largely plant-based restaurant that champions produce from hyperlocal farms: think nourishing moringa soup, presented in a coconut shell, or vegetables wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over charcoal. As for the Toja Spa? It’s spread across several bamboo pavilions, all of which overlook the Ayung River. Opt for a restorative scrub—done with rice and ginger—or a meditation session at the foot of a private waterfall.

South Malé Atoll, Maldives

The Best Places to Visit in Winter for a SunSoaked Escape

A drop of sand in the blue expanses of the South Atoll, Naladhu Private Island is the best place to live out Richard Branson fantasies—even in a crowded market of ultra-luxurious hotels. Just a 40-minute speedboat journey from Malé and yet a world unto itself, there are just 20 neo-colonial suites here, all of which come with 24/7 butler service (or Kuwaanu), and give out onto the water, where fish (and, yes, the occasional shark) dart through the shallows. You would be forgiven for never leaving the privacy of your own room; celebrated sustainable architect and designer Yuji Yamazaki masterminded a refurbishment in 2021, with every suite now boasting outdoor showers rimmed with lush tropical greenery; turquoise swimming pools where guests can enjoy floating breakfasts (a rite of passage in the Maldives) while the waves crash in the background; and deep standalone baths, which your Kuwaanu will fill with rose petals if the mood strikes.

It’s worth braving the grueling two-minute stroll to the western side of the island to try the cuisine at The Living Room; the off-menu policy at Naladhu means you can go wholly off-piste, if nothing listed takes your fancy (although it would be a mistake to skip the Maldivian curry with lobster). And if you’re worried about cabin fever? Two other resorts owned by the Anantara group— Dhigu and Veli —are accessible via lengthy overwater walkways (although only residents are allowed on Naladhu). Get there before Daphne from  The White Lotus checks in.

Weligama, Sri Lanka

The Best Places to Visit in Winter for a SunSoaked Escape

Last year proved rocky for Sri Lanka, but the country is welcoming tourists once again. This is one of those winter destinations that truly has it all, and you would be hard-pressed to find a lovelier place from which to explore it than Malabar Hill . Opened in 2022 on a rewilded cinnamon plantation just north of small town Weligama, its villas are spread across a 33-acre estate, which is home to more than 500 species, including mongooses and Malabar hornbills. The décor is a celebration of Indian craftsmanship and Moorish design, complemented by views of rice paddies, the Indian Ocean, and lush forests. It would be worth visiting just to have sundowners at the teak hotel bar before heading out onto the terrace for a local fish curry.

Tulum, Mexico

The Best Places to Visit in Winter for a SunSoaked Escape

There’s a host of design-focused stays launching in the Yucatán in 2023, but Casa Chablé may well be the most impressive. To begin with, it’s set in the UNESCO-protected Sian Ka’an reserve south of Tulum, whose cenotes, reefs, and jungles are home to everything from ocelots to manatees. Powered by renewable energy, each of its 10 rooms is comprised from sustainable, local materials such as Zapote wood and Galarza stone—meaning the exteriors blend seamlessly into the landscape—while interior designer Paulina Moran has filled each room with natural textures. The majority of guests arrive by boat—it’s a 30-minute trip through the mangroves surrounding the resort to get to its private dock—but the islet on which the hotel’s 10 rooms stand can be reached via car or helicopter, too. There’s lots to do here , from star gazing to spear-fishing—but when the beach is this paradisiacal, why do anything else but laze?

Queensland, Australia

The Best Places to Visit in Winter for a SunSoaked Escape

Sometimes it’s hard to figure out where to begin with Australia—three million square miles of diverse geographical wonders—but there’s no going wrong with a reservation at Silky Oaks Lodge . Reopened at the close of 2021 by the same team behind Kangaroo Island’s Southern Ocean Lodge , the 40-room escape is nestled amongst the blue quandong trees and “wait-a-while” vines of the Daintree Rainforest, whose tropical mangroves and billabongs date back an estimated 180 million years. Each of its treehouses is perched above the Mossman River, over which turquoise Ulysses butterflies flit through the ylang ylang-scented air; it’s worth the price of a room just to recline in your private hammock, listening to the roar of the cicadas with one of the hotel’s specialty gin-based cocktails in hand. If you do nothing else during your visit, make sure to at least join a guided First Nations tour, in which Kuku Yalanji guides introduce visitors to the history—and countless natural marvels—of the Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation.

Bahia, Brazil

The Best Places to Visit in Winter for a SunSoaked Escape

Trancoso has lured an haute bohemian crowd since the ’70s, and 50 years later, the appeal of this Bahia hotspot has yet to diminish (helped by its 15 miles of gold sand beach, with fewer crowds than Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana). Enter the Fasano group, whose 40-room Trancoso property opened a 20-minute drive from the historic Quadrado at the beginning of 2022. Its elegant white bungalows are spread out over a nearly 750-acre property, a third of which constitutes a designated nature reserve—and the majority of suites offer views of Itapororoca beach from their rooftop decks. You can and should spend most of your trip in the Atlantic surf—taking a break occasionally for fresh ceviche and caipirinhas on the sand at the hotel’s beach kiosk—but there’s also a pool in view of the waves that’s worth your attention (and guaranteed to be lined with genetically blessed Brazilians sunning themselves in the 86-degree warm weather). If you missed out on Cancún in its heyday, make a point of visiting before the year is out.

Marrakech, Morocco

The Best Places to Visit in Winter for a SunSoaked Escape

Just a three-and-a-half-hour flight from London, Marrakech is a mainstay on lists of the best places to visit in winter, and with good reason. Temperatures in Yves Saint Laurent’s erstwhile home hover in the seventies throughout the wintertime, and any chillier days can happily be whiled away indulging in some retail therapy in the souk or visiting world-class museums such as MAP Marrakech , home to more than 3,000 exquisite pieces of jewelry from around the world, or the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden . The city’s grand dame hotels— Royal Mansour and El Fenn —remain as sumptuous as ever, but for something a little different, consider heading 45 minutes outside of the city proper to Caravan Agafay . The latest opening from the Habitas group is surrounded by the lunar landscape of the Agafay desert, with the Atlas mountains visible from its eco-luxe Berber-inspired tents.

San José, Costa Rica

The Best Places to Visit in Winter for a SunSoaked Escape

Frequent travelers to Central America often sing the praises of Nicaragua, Costa Rica’s more laidback, affordable neighbor—but a trip to Hacienda AltaGracia is a good way to remind yourself why the world fell in love with Costa Rica in the first place. Opened in November 2021, this 50-room hotel on an old coffee farm in the foothills of the Talamancas is the embodiment of pura vida : a day here might include horseback riding through the Arabica trees and sugarcane fields of the hacienda, taking a river bath in the Calientillo River (with optional wild bergamot massage), or undertaking a birdwatching trip in search of caracaras and quetzals. In every direction, the landscape is mind-blowing in its beauty. (It’s no surprise to learn that AltaGracia is actually located beside one of the world’s Blue Zones, a place where the average human life is significantly longer than normal.) The real selling point here, though, is the 20,000-square-foot spa , designed in imitation of a greenhouse and filled with moss, bougainvillea, and ferns. Every visit begins with a Casa de Agua treatment, with herbal and local clay exfoliation, before guests move on to everything from maderoterapia—a wooden massage technique practiced across the region—to gong baths.

Road trips and Caribbean vacations are top travel trends this winter

A new Tripadvisor report reveals Americans’ plans for the winter season

Tripadvisor released its Winter Travel Index for 2023 , revealing travel trends for the upcoming winter season. Despite the high cost of travel, Americans are not deterred, as 58% of survey respondents say they plan to travel over the winter. International travel is on the rise, and road-tripping is set to be the most popular form of travel for Americans this season.

Most respondents say they plan winter travel to coincide with seasonal events like winter festivals, winter sports, school breaks and holidays. While cost remains an important factor in travel planning, it has not hindered plans. 93% of Americans say they will spend the same or more on travel than last year, and 57% say they will travel as planned regardless of economic factors. As COVID-19 becomes less of a concern, 73% of respondents say that travel is extremely important to them.

"This season, we're seeing Americans confident in taking bigger trips. About half plan to travel more than they did last winter, and they are more likely to take a long trip (5+ nights)," said Alice Jong, Senior Research Analyst at Tripadvisor.

International travel continues to increase, with 32% of Americans planning to travel abroad. Las Galeras in the Dominican Republic, Fasmendhoo in the Maldives and Hong Kong in China are top trending international travel destinations. Mexico and the Caribbean continue to be popular winter destinations.

Road-tripping is emerging as a preferred method of travel this winter. With air travel becoming increasingly unpredictable, 38% of Americans say they will drive to their destination. They’re also more likely to stay with friends and family during their travels.

Other findings reveal that U.S. travelers aim to fill their vacation days with adventures and experiences like outdoor activities and food and wine tours, with 56% of respondents aiming to book 3-5 activities for their trip.

Planning a Winter Trip? Consider These 7 Noteworthy Places.

Whether you’re bookending 2023 or kicking off 2024, here are appealing places for a trip..

Sick of shivering in a knitted cap as the snow won’t stop falling? Consider destinations like Hawai‘i, where winter traditions have a tropical twist.

Summer might be peak travel season, but smarter tourists can dodge those crowds—and high prices—by considering a winter trip. instead. Indeed, some destinations shine as brightly in the colder season, albeit for different reasons, so we’ve rounded up seven of the best around the world to tempt you into traveling in the next few months.

Here are the seven best places to travel this winter.

This winter is a fine time to travel to Hawai’i, when tourism dollars can have a true impact helping the state bounce back from Maui’s devastating wildfires. Governor Josh Green has encouraged visits to the parts of the island that were untouched (though the Banyan Tree, in Lahaina, which was once a core part of the celebrations, is off limits this year).

Elsewhere in the state, Honolulu hosts a City Lights celebration that runs through the end of the year, with a kickoff on December 2, while the Kapolei City Lights runs from December 9 through January 2, with the theme of a Westside Wonderland on the leeward part of the island. If you want to work up a sweat before Christmas indulgences, join the marathon on December 10: the fourth-largest in the country.

Where to stay

  • Book now: Romer Waikīkī at the Ambassador

The just opened, 368-room boutique hotel is a reimagining of the rather workaday hotel formerly known as the Ambassador after a $44 million overhaul. The four-star property now has loft bunk bed rooms as well as several locally focused touches, from Big Island–roasted coffee in room to a custom-fit lava rock wall.

How to get there

Southwest is the smart bet to reach the islands. It first launched low-cost flights in 2019, before ramping up to expand to several more destinations on the mainland later, including Phoenix and San Diego.

2. Vienna, Austria

The Wien Museum network comprises 20 different sites across the city, but the best known, on Karlsplatz, is reopening December 2023 after four years of in-depth renovations. The new exhibition space, spanning all three of the building’s floors, will feature a permanent installation on the city’s history, from Roman times on, and a new, “floating” top floor constructed of exposed concrete.

If you opt for a visit around that time, you’ll have the chance to attend one of Vienna’s balls. The headline-grabber, of course, is the Opera Ball on February 8 (unfortunately, ticket orders are now being put on a waiting list), the highlight of the city’s social calendar. But there are other, equally appealing bashes, too: The Kreativball takes place on February 10 and is an evening for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies to celebrate. Or pack a costume for Rudolfina Redoute on February 12, which always has a frisson of mystery, since the dress code requires masks.

  • Book now : O11 Boutique Hotel

The 52-room boutique hotel opened in late 2022, offering a refreshingly modern option with contemporary decor heavy on wood, marble, and textile; the Presidential Suite has its own music system and DJ booth for VIP EDM.

National carrier Austrian Airlines connects Vienna with Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago. There’s also service from Atlanta on Delta Airlines.

3. The Bahamas

This winter, this island cluster has been unlocked as an easy getaway for West Coast residents, thanks to a pair of new nonstop flights. First, there’s service from Seattle and Los Angeles on Alaska Airlines, with up to a four-time weekly frequency; JetBlue will operate on the latter route too, with an added appeal—aircraft equipped with its standout Mint class.

On Boxing Day (December 26) and New Year’s Day, the island throws its biggest bashes for Junkaroo, the African-inflected carnival that’s a riot of color, noise, and energy. Downtown Nassau’s Bay Street is the epicenter of celebrations across the country—while you’re there, stop in at the Educulture Junkanoo Museum , where you can see past examples of the elaborate costumes and make your own Junkanoo-style mask (masquerades have been a hallmark since the slavery era).

  • Book now: Baha Mar

Those who wouldn’t usually opt for resort-style complexes like this should reconsider, as this is an innovative exception, thanks to the rooms (book an oversize two-bedroom suite at the Grand Hyatt), more than 20 dining options (try the Middle Eastern food at Cleo), and amenities like the near-vertical Thunderball slide at the on-site water park.

Other than those new routes, the main airport in Nassau has an extensive, nonstop network around the East Coast, including Silver Airways from TPA and Delta from BOS.

Tartu’s program of events will nod to its longtime reputation as an academic and cultural hub.

Thirteen years after the capital, Tallinn, earned the accolade of European Capital of Culture, this tiny Baltic country’s second city, Tartu, will follow, beginning its year-long celebration with a show on the banks of the River Emajoĩgi on January 26.

If you’re smitten enough by these efforts to consider a longer stay, you’re in luck: Estonia’s cannily embraced the global nomad era, via its almost decade-old e-residency program and the new digital nomad-focused visa, which grants permission to live and work there for a year , albeit with a few provisos.

  • Book now: Hotel Tartu

Hotel Tartu, in the heart of downtown, includes 112 modernist rooms housed in a recently spiffed-up 1960s building.

There are no direct, nonstop flights to Tallinn (or Tartu) from outside Europe. The handiest long-haul hub is likely in a neighboring country, Finland: Finnair connects Helsinki with New York, Dallas, and Los Angeles. Take a puddle jumper to Tallinn and then use one of the local trains.

White mosque dwarfed by five skyscrapers beside water

Come to Dubai in the winter and expect endlessly sunny days, with daytime temperatures in the upper 70s.

5. Dubai, UAE

December 2 is UAE National Day—this year, it will mark 52 years since the cluster of emirates, including Dubai, was established after the withdrawal of British colonial forces. Learn more about the complicated modern negotiations, and the cultures that thrived here long before that, via a trip to the Etihad Museum, an eight-building complex sitting on the site where the first constitution was signed. From December 15 to January 4, travelers can visit the Madinat Jumeirah Festive Market , which features gingerbread house decorating and a train to the “North Pole"—visiting Santa, though, involves a trip on a traditional Arabic boat, or abra .

Take a day trip to another emirate, too, Sharjah, which we recommended as a must-see spot in 2023 : the art- and architecture-obsessed rulers here have made it a cutting-edge cultural hub.

  • Book now: The Lana

There are more than 700 hotels to choose from for a stay in Dubai. For travelers coming in the later part of winter, the Lana is now accepting bookings from February after several abortive attempts at opening. The 30-story tower on the waterfront canal will be a gleaming landmark with 225 rooms—more than a third will be suites, starting in size at just under 540 square feet. There will be seven different restaurants on site plus a rooftop pool.

Dubai’s national carrier Emirates has one of the most extensive long-haul networks in the world, serving a dozen destinations in the United States, including Orlando and Seattle.

This little island is often overshadowed by the wealthier Mustique next door, but Bequia has distinctive charms of its own.

6. Bequia, St. Vincent and Grenadines

Bequia is best known among yachties, a legacy of the pirate-driven era in the region, when its harbor lured the likes of Blackbeard. The first tourists here in the 1960s had a creative vibe, including Bob Dylan (who arrived keen to buy one of the handmade boats for which it was long known).

It retains that off-kilter appeal even now: Take Grenadine Sea Salt, run by erstwhile commercial photographer Jerry Simpson, who designed his own pans to improve on age-old production methods and now offers everything from tasting dinners to tours of his operation on the island. And make sure to take a dip in the waters off Princess Margaret Beach, where the late British royal would come to escape the socially constricting confines of Mustique.

  • Book now: Bequia Beach Hotel

Swedish entrepreneur Bengt Morstedt operates the Bequia Beach Hotel, an upscale, laid-back option. He’s opening a series of luxury villa rentals now, too, under the Grenadine Hills banner, including one addition set to debut in early 2024.

If you stay at Bequia Beach Hotel, the property can arrange transfers. Otherwise, there are two options: head to AIA airport in St. Vincent, then hop a ferry for about an hour, or connect on SVG Air from Barbados.

7. Park City, Utah

The Sundance Film Festival officially hits middle age this winter, as it celebrates the 40th edition since it was founded by Robert Redford. The new director, Eugene Hernandez , makes his debut with this edition and will bring his touch to the programming. This year’s opening night gala will honor alums, including blockbuster auteur Christopher Nolan, though the focus of the 10-day bash is always the awards show, which takes place on January 26.

If you’re square-eyed from too much screen time, consider a trip to the slopes nearby. Per the NOAA, there’s a greater than 50 percent chance of the El Niño phenom emerging as very strong, a rarity that’s happened only a fistful of times since 1950. The impact on Park City of that proving true? Ample powder on slopes nearby, including Deer Valley and Park City Mountain, which have a combined 7,300 acres of ski-focused terrain.

  • Book now: Pendry Park City

The 153-room boutique hotel was a splashy addition to the landscape here when it opened in Canyons Village early in 2022. It has its own on-site outfitter for outdoor activities, as well as a raft of see-and-be-seen spots like the lobby bar Après Pendry.

Salt Lake City, Delta’s western hub, is a 30-minute drive away and offers ample direct flights around the country.

The snowy terrain, scenic drives and hikes for every skill level really just need to be experienced IRL. Thankfully, you’ll have plenty of room to roam since crowds tend to dwindle during the chillier months. A south-central Texas city with a big footprint and even bigger personality, San Antonio is best known for The Alamo (which, for those who didn’t pay attention in history class, commemorates the 1836 battle for Texan independence from Mexico). Definitely take advantage of the mild weather with a stroll along the 15-mile pedestrian riverfront pathway. It’s also hard to compete with the views from the 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas on a clear day. In terms of hotels, the Thompson San Antonio – Riverwalk offers an unbeatable location in the Arts District and an elevated contemporary feel.

  • Where to Stay: Hudson Valley Cottage (from $205/night), The Amelia (from $358/night)

Just a two-hour train ride from New York City, Hudson is a hotspot for Brooklynites seeking a more laid-back lifestyle in a pastoral setting. It’s also a popular spot for peeping fall foliage. However, autumn isn’t the only standout season. The quieter winter period has its perks—among them fewer tourists popping into the many antique shops, farm-to-table eateries, wine bars and art galleries. It’s also easier to snag a room at one of the cute little hotels like The Amelia . Besides, the town itself looks as pretty as a picture covered in snow.

13. Sonoma, California

  • Why We Love It: wine, vineyards, food, scenery
  • Where to Stay: Windhaven Cottage (from $194/night), Kenwood Inn & Spa (from $350/night)

Two words: Cabernet season. When the harvest period ends and the droves of thirsty tourists depart, Sonoma shines in all its gorgeous, laid-back glory. A chill in the air means it’s time for knit sweaters and sipping flights of bold reds on open-air patios with blankets (and perhaps a heater). The private guided tasting in the library at Hamel Family Wines also includes a food pairing that spotlights what’s in season locally. And it’s still a great time to get outdoors and explore picturesque Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. Many of the wine country inns welcome visitors with fireplace-clad rooms.

14. Leavenworth, Washington

  • Why We Love It: Bavarian vibes, German food, beer, outdoor activities
  • Where to Stay: Aventyr Hus (from $173/night), Willkommen Zuhause (from $200/night)

Dreaming of jetting off to Europe but can’t swing the price of a plane ticket? Board a flight bound for central Washington. Leavenworth is well known as one of the best Christmas towns in the United States . But even after the Santa chasers depart, this enchanting village in the Cascade Mountains still delights travelers with its Bavarian character and snow-dusted scenery. It’s full of alpine architecture, German restaurants (bring on the schnitzel), beer halls and cozy lodges that welcome guests with fireside cocoa. Simply put: it’s a storybook setting for a winter trip that looks and feels like a fairytale.

15. New Orleans, Louisiana

  • Why We Love It: history, food, nightlife, hotels
  • Where to Stay: Hotel Peter & Paul (from $179/night), The Chloe (from $450/night)

New Orleans enjoys a mild climate and pleasant year-round temps, so it’s never too cold to really soak in the energy of the Big Easy. Folks visiting in the winter can groove to live music, eat delicious cuisine (we’re salivating just thinking of po’boys, crawfish etouffee and beignets) and take an old-timey trolley ride. On the spooky side of things, there are ghost tours and haunted bar crawls . History without the eeriness awaits at Hotel Peter & Paul , an elegant boutique gem that used to be a church, schoolhouse, rectory and convent.

16. Sausalito, California

  • Why We Love It: seaside charm, food, hiking, nature
  • Where to Stay : Ocean View Home (from $380/night), Cavallo Point Lodge (from $449/night)

Driving across the Golden Gate Bridge towards Sausalito, the haziness and rolling fog of San Francisco instantly becomes a thing of the past as bright sunshine and national parkland come into focus. Traverse the coastal hiking paths and thank the glorious microclimate for only having to pack a medium-weight jacket. Walk around downtown, peep the houseboats and eat at the famous Sushi Ran . Another fantastic place for dinner, Murray Circle at Cavallo Point Lodge (the Fort Baker hotel that gives guests the chance to snooze in a former army officer’s home) offers seasonal fare and sweeping views.

17. Charleston, South Carolina

  • Why We Love It: history, food, cocktail scene, hotels
  • Where to Stay: Zero George (from $430/night), Hotel Bennett (from $420/night)

The occasional dusting of fresh flakes makes the Holy City even more magical. But, generally speaking, the weather in the winter is pretty mild. That’s great news since you’ll be walking a lot. We’re big fans of seeing the historic sites on foot during the day. The opulent mansion along The Battery and Rainbow Row are not to be missed. While the culinary scene buzzes with hot new restaurants and stalwarts cooking up delicious Low Country cuisine. Grab a nightcap at one of the many cozy cocktail bars before retiring to a stylish hotel such as Zero George or Hotel Bennett .

18. Amelia Island, Florida

  • Why We Love It: beaches, nature, recreation

Add to that championship golf courses, spas and luxury hotels. Don’t forget about the seaside recreation and abundant wildlife. The ability to dine alfresco throughout the winter months will surely entice travelers fleeing the cold.

19. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

  • Why We Love It: history, culture, museums
  • Where to Stay: Hyatt Centric Center City Philadelphia (from $179/night), ROOST Midtown (from $225/night)

Philadelphia beckons travelers with its world-class food scene—from the iconic Philly cheesesteak to more vegan eats than almost anywhere else—and well-preserved historic sites such as the Liberty Bell. The myriad museums, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Franklin Institute, are fascinating spots to wait out blustery spells. The many bars provide an entirely different type of more revelrous refuge. Snow-covered cobblestone streets, 19th-century row homes and grand hotels exude enough charm to convert even the most staunch suburbanites to full-blown cheerleaders for a winter weekend away in the City of Brotherly Love.

20. Jackson, Wyoming

  • Why We Love It: winter sports, western vibes, nature, wildlife
  • Where to Stay: Downtown Townhouse (from $289/night), Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole (from $425/night)

Longing for a quintessential American frontier getaway filled with ruggedly beautiful scenery, ample cold-weather activities and western-style fun? Jackson sets the bar pretty high. Wyoming’s premier winter vacation destination sits within proximity to three ski areas: Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King Mountain Resort and Grand Targhee Resort. So there’s certainly no lack of groomed trails. More outdoor adventure awaits at nearby Grand Teton National Park. Of course, it’s not all rough and tumble. The Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole captures the pioneering spirit while infusing a level of luxury that the early settlers couldn’t have even fathomed.

Best Winter Vacations in the US - A large Victorian-style dark blue and gray house in the Catskills.

21. Catskills, New York

  • Why We Love It: winter sports, cozy vibes, hotels
  • Where to Stay: Junebug Cottage (from $195/night), Hotel Lilien (from $255/night)

When we think of quintessential cold-weather getaways on the East Coast, the Catskills immediately enters our mind. A snow-dusted jaunt to this winter wonderland region in southeastern New York promises unbridled natural beauty and piles of fresh powder. That means a getaway that’s brimming with outdoor activities, from skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing and tubing. It’s also a great place to unwind—turn off your cell and dive into a good book. As if there weren’t already enough cute and cozy places to stay in the Catskills, the darling 18-room Hotel Lilien recently opened not far from Hunter Mountain

Best Winter Vacations in the US - A house with a set of French-style doors of a wooden house lead out onto a stone patio filled with furniture.

22. San Diego, California

  • Why We Love It: beach, surfing, sunshine
  • Where to Stay: Charming North Park Cottage (from $184/night), Oceanfront Condo (from $225/night)

One of the many great things about a winter trip to San Diego is that you don’t have to load up a suitcase with boots, gloves, hats and heavy coats. Which incidentally leaves more room in your luggage to bring back items from the boutiques in the historic Gaslamp Quarter. While it might be a little chilly to bust out a bikini for an afternoon sun session on the many beautiful beaches but that shouldn’t preclude you from strolling along the sandy stretches, enjoying a picnic by the ocean or even taking a surf lesson (that’s why we have wetsuits, right?).

Best Winter Vacations in the US - A yellow adobe-style house with an aged teal door. The steps up to the house are covered in snow.

23. Santa Fe, New Mexico

  • Why We Love It: art, architecture, culture
  • Where to Stay: Mountain View Condo (from $134/night), Bishop's Lodge, Auberge Resorts Collection (from $755/night)

Winter in Santa Fe is a bit slower and less crowded as compared to the bustling summer months. That shift gives this Sangre de Cristo foothills city a laid-back feel that’s super pleasant for a relaxing weekend trip. Don’t get us wrong, there’s still plenty to do between walking tours of the historic district, visits to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and gallery hopping. It just means fewer people to bump into while stopping on the street to admire the Pueblo-style architecture. Outdoor pursuits such as trails and hot springs are another big draw.

Best Winter Vacations in the US - A grey house with a green roof in Boone looks over a leafy backyard with lots of foliage.

24. Boone, North Carolina

  • Why We Love It: winter sports, scenic drives, wellness
  • Where to Stay: Cozy Cabin (from $130/night), Creekside Cabin (from $178/night)

The small town of Boone sits at a higher elevation and gets more snow than the majority of North Carolina. Outdoorsy types will enjoy the myriad opportunities for winter recreation. Skiing, sledding, ice skating and snow tubing are especially popular. It’s also a gorgeous place for a snowy, scenic drive. The surrounding area puts on many seasonal events including SugarFest and the Festival of Lights. Don't sleep on Boone as a wellness destination either. The Art of Living Retreat Center is a sanctum of well-being with yoga, meditation and Ayurvedic spa rituals.

25. Chicago, Illinois

  • Why We Love It: outdoor activities, food, hotels
  • Where to Stay: LondonHouse Chicago, Curio Collection by Hilton (from $150/night), Wicker Park Penthouse (from $530/night)

Yes, it’s cold. That’s sort of a given. But Chicago is also festive during the holidays and exciting year-round—that very much includes the frosty months. Nostalgic fun takes the form of sledding on the parkland surrounding Soldier Field and ice skating at the rink in Millennium Park. Go say hi to some of the snuggly critters at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Then warm up by diving into a hot, cheesy deep-dish pizza. (Hey, when in Chi-town.) Prefer indoor activities? Head to The Gwen, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Michigan Avenue Chicago for curling and cocktails on the terrace.

15 Winter Vacation Ideas to Plan for 2024

Whether it's a snowy retreat or a beach haven, these trips will warm your soul.

Now that the madness of the holidays are behind us, the long and quiet stretch of winter has officially settled in. While this may be a prime season for Dry January detoxes and cozy nights spent in, it's also a great time to plot an escape—because a "cozy night in" feels so much better when it comes with room service, doesn't it?

Gstaad, Switzerland

gstaad palace

From Verbier to Courchevel, Europe certainly has no shortage of glamorous ski towns that attract an ultra-high-net-worth crowd, but Gstaad, all old world and impossibly gorgeous, just may be the most glittering of the bunch. Monegasque royalty Andrea Casiraghi and Tatiana Santo Domingo got married here back in 2014, while fashion royalty Valentino regularly hosts his A-list pals at his chalet. For those without a standing invite, the only place to stay is at the grandest dame hotel in town, Gstaad Palace, which has been owned and operated by the same family since it opened in 1913.

Gstaad Palace

St. Martin may be the chiller antidote to glitzy St. Barts but it's got no less of a celebrity sheen. A-listers from Andy Warhol to Robert De Niro have found R&R on the island, particularly at Belmond's La Samanna, a glamorous property that just celebrated its 50th birthday. The resort occupies prime real estate on the best beach, and with newly redesigned villas—think infinity pools, wrap-around terraces, private gardens, more than 4,000 square feet of space—you too can feel like a Hollywood star.

Courchevel, France

Of the many stellar five-star hotels scattered around the tony ski resort, none are as utterly charming as Les Airelles Courchevel. Built to resemble an Austro-Hungarian castle, with a handpainted facade and chic, uniquely decorated rooms, the property is full of luxurious amenities. On the list: six restaurants (including two on the slopes), a spa offering facials and treatments with La Mer products, a brand new partnership with famed pâtissier Cedric Grolet, and a decked out teenage room stocked with pinball machines, retro arcade games, and pool tables to keep the kids entertained.

San José del Cabo, Mexico

san jose del cabo

There are many stunning luxury hotels to choose from at this celeb-adored Baja California destination but for that perfect mix of wellness-minded zen and beachy fun, the answer is Zadún. Nestled among desert dunes along the dramatic coastline, the property is part of the exclusive Ritz-Carlton Reserve portfolio, whose resorts are known for their impeccable service, ultra-luxe digs, and celebration of (and seamless blend with) their natural surroundings. And of course for their incredible spas, which you'll never want to leave.

As the second largest private landowner in America, with 2 million acres of it, Ted Turner is basically a real-life John Dutton . Except unlike the Yellowstone patriarch, the media mogul doesn't mind sharing. Located on 550,000 acres of pristine wildlife in Northern New Mexico/Southern Colorado is Vermejo, a Ted Turner Reserve, the largest property within his hospitality brand. There is a deep focus on conservation here, especially in protecting the American bison and Rio Grande cutthroat trout, plus ample creature comforts: five-star accommodations, a world-class spa, and incredible food.

So breathtakingly beautiful are the Dolomite mountains that in 2009 they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In San Cassiano, one of the charming Alpine villages nestled underneath the region's imposing peaks, is the Rosa Alpina, which became an Aman partner hotel a few years ago. That means you can expect all the sleek and ultra-zen-like trappings of the cult hotel brand, coupled with the home-away-from-home warmth that comes from being a family-run property since 1939.

Vienna, Austria

Unabashedly aristocratic and dripping with class (and classical music history), the Austrian capital feels particularly inviting in the winter. Maybe it's the grand balls that take place throughout the month of January, or all the sumptuous Hapsburg palaces and beautiful coffee houses and fantastic Klimt-strewn museums where you can find refuge from the cold. There's also plenty of warmth to be found at the Almanac Palais Vienna—a boutique hotel occupying a pair of former 19th century palaces that opened last March—especially in the calming thermal water-fed indoor pool of its sprawling wellness sanctuary.

Originally built in 1893, the Wheatleigh, a stately Italianate Gilded Age mansion-turned-boutique hotel feels akin to a European chalet come winter—one that also happens to be on the National Register of Historic Places. A number of nearby trails are great for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding.

Is everyone you know suddenly going to Panama? Stay ahead of the FOMO and book a trip to the Central American capital city and head to its old quarter, which is now home to the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo. Located in a UNESCO-protected historic district, the property dates back to 1917, when it was built to be a social club that, throughout the 20th century, hosted the likes of Albert Einstein and Queen Elizabeth. That sophisticated charm has been well-preserved, and now comes with modern luxuries like five restaurants, a speakeasy, and a great spa.

Venice, Italy

The most authentic way to do Venice? Go in the winter, when it's not only quiet and tourist-free but, with the foggy mist that settles over the city, hauntingly gorgeous. You'll be spoiled for choice when it comes to sumptuous hotels but the latest entry in town is the Violino d'Oro, built in a former 17th-century palazzo with only Italian artisan-crafted furnishings: everything, from the fabrics and plates, to even the terrazzo floors , hails from workshops in Venice and Tuscany.

If you're a skier, skip popular Park City for Alta instead, where snowboarding is verboten. The town, which is located just 28 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, also gets a fraction of visitors as its neighbor (about 500,000 a year compared to Park City, which gets more than 3 million). Stay at Snowpine Lodge, which was renovated in 2019 to become a fully ski-in/ski-out hotel, the area's first. Your après-ski needs will be covered, too, thanks to a spa, slope-side hot tubs and heated pool, an oxygen bar, fire pits, and heated ski lockers.

Hibernating in winter? Not us.

There’s a certain kind of magic about a winter holiday. The crunchy snow, the smell of baked cinnamon and mulled wine, the cozy nights by candlelight. Whether it's a delicious grilled sausage at a Christmas market  in Munich, snowboarding down fresh powder in  New Zealand , trekking across Morocco's snow-dusted Atlas Mountains or blissing out in a steamy Alaskan hot spring, winter travel has some pretty epic advantages. Plus, there are way fewer tourists, queues are tiny, and your holiday selfies will feature just you and the view. We think a winter tour might be on the cards…

Why travel in winter.

Small group sizes icon

Smaller crowds

By travelling in an off-peak season, you’ll encounter shorter queues at major attractions and have more chances to mix with the locals. You’ll also alleviate some of the impact of high-season tourism on popular destinations and infuse some off-season support into the local community.

Great value icon

Value for money

Travelling in winter has many benefits, like cute puffer coats and big mugs of hot chocolate. But the benefits to your travel budget also shouldn’t be overlooked. Flights and travel experiences are often cheaper in off-peak seasons, meaning you can use your money to maximise your extras on trip.

Real life experiences icon

Real life experiences

Real life experiences are those moments when you know something special is happening. It could be whizzing across the snowfields of Finnish Lapland on the back of a dog sled, or floating through Venice's misty and (unusually) quiet canals. These unexpected moments are what travelling with us is all about.

Here’s how the 2023-24 ski season compared to past years, according to meteorologists

Data points to a fairly average season with a somewhat strong finish.

Another ski season is nearing its end in the Colorado High Country. For meteorologists, “average” is the word that comes to mind when they think about this winter and spring compared to others.

“My parting thought about this season was that I was happy with ‘average,'” wrote OpenSnow.com founding meteorologist Joel Gratz in a May 1 blog post .

“Sure, we can always hope for more snow, but an ‘average’ season is still pretty good and offers plenty of opportunities for powder days, sunny skies, and everything in between,” Gratz continued.

For about half the season, from November through mid-January, snowpack levels throughout the state were significantly below the 30-year-median, according to data from the Natural Resources Conservation Service . Then, in mid-January, snowpack began to surge, straddling the 30-year median. For a month between March 14 and April 14, levels were above the normal threshold.

Specific basins saw greater snowpack than what was reported statewide, such as the Colorado River Headwaters Basin that encompasses a slew of high-profile ski areas including Breckenridge Ski Resort, Copper Mountain Resort, Vail Mountain and Beaver Creek.

The Colorado River basin’s snowpack levels held consistently above the 30-year median beginning on March 4 — 10 days before the trend was seen statewide — and through mid-April, though levels had briefly pushed above normal a few times earlier in the season.

In Summit County, for example, that meant above-average snow accumulation for some areas. In Dillon, a SNOTEL site recorded 134.5 inches of total snow accumulation between September and April, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Bernie Meier.

The seasonal average for that site is 108.4 inches. During the 2022-23 season, the site recorded 105 inches for the total season, which ends in June, while in 2021-22 it recorded 111 inches, Meier said.

Another SNOTEL site in Breckenridge recorded 144.7 between September and March and has not yet reported its April figures, Meier said. But it puts the site at just below normal for snow accumulation through March, with average accumulation for that time being 146 inches.

Looking at the Colorado River basin as a whole, “The seasonal precipitation came in at 101%, so almost as normal as you can get,” Meier added.

Zooming in on a ski area like Copper Mountain, snow base depth remained strong for much of the season, according to OpenSnow meteorologist Sam Collentine.

In a a May 1 blog post, Collentine stated that a review of Copper data showed that the resort was 69% below the 30-year normal snow depth in November and 17% below in December but was 32% above in January, 9% above in February, 30% above in March and 34% above in April.

“According to our monthly snowfall chart for Copper Mountain, we recorded 14 powder days with 6 inches or more from December through April,” Collentine wrote.

The healthy snowpack, boosted by several spring storms, helped Copper extend its closing date to May 12 — marking the second time in two years that the resort has remained open into May.

Other resorts that extended seasons included Steamboat Resort, which extended its ski activities by a week from its original end date , closing on April 21. Last season, the resort closed on April 16. Prior to then, Steamboat had not extended its season by a week or more since 1993.

Others, like Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, have yet to announce a closing date . Last season, Breckenridge closed on May 21 while Arapahoe Basin closed on June 4.

In his 2023-24 season preview published in August, Collentine predicted that with the switch to an El Nino pattern, Colorado would see average snowfall with the potential for a stronger start and end to the season.

“This winter forecast preview tended to be right on the mark with a snowpack hovering right around the 30-year normal by the time we reached the peak snowpack in late April,” Collentine wrote in a May 1 blog post on OpenSnow.com .

El Nino refers to the warming of surface temperatures of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of South America and the subsequent change in the jet stream that can occur. Typically, this translates to less snow and dryer conditions in the northern U.S. with more snow and wetter conditions in the southern U.S.

winter travel 2023

The pattern, however, has little correlation on conditions in the country’s central regions, including much of Colorado, making it hard to discern El Nino’s effects on the High Country.

Heading into the summer, experts predict El Nino will give way to a La Nina pattern , representing the inverse wherein the jet stream brings wetter, cooler temperatures to the north and warmer, dryer temperatures to the south.

La Nina is likely to persist into the fall and winter as well, with an “80-90% chance for a La Nina during the winter of 2024-2025,” Gratz stated in his May 1 post.

Gratz added while he has “low to no confidence” in predicting snowfall so far out, La Nina tends to be the opposite of this season’s El Nino, meaning next season, “could bring average to above-average snow to Canada and the northern Rockies and possibly below-average snow to the southwestern U.S.”

But once again, Colorado falls in-between both zones, “so anything could happen,” Gratz stated.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory captured this image of solar flares early Saturday afternoon. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm.

Planet Earth is getting rocked by the biggest solar storm in decades – and the potential effects have those people in charge of power grids, communications systems and satellites on edge.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says there have been measurable effects and impacts from the geomagnetic storm that has been visible as aurora across vast swathes of the Northern Hemisphere. So far though, NOAA has seen no reports of major damage.

There has been some degradation and loss to communication systems that rely on high-frequency radio waves, NOAA told NPR, as well as some preliminary indications of irregularities in power systems.

"Simply put, the power grid operators have been busy since yesterday working to keep proper, regulated current flowing without disruption," said Shawn Dahl, service coordinator for the Boulder, Co.-based Space Weather Prediction Center at NOAA.

"Satellite operators are also busy monitoring spacecraft health due to the S1-S2 storm taking place along with the severe-extreme geomagnetic storm that continues even now," Dahl added, saying some GPS systems have struggled to lock locations and offered incorrect positions.

NOAA's GOES-16 satellite captured a flare erupting occurred around 2 p.m. EDT on May 9, 2024.

As NOAA had warned late Friday, the Earth has been experiencing a G5, or "Extreme," geomagnetic storm . It's the first G5 storm to hit the planet since 2003, when a similar event temporarily knocked out power in part of Sweden and damaged electrical transformers in South Africa.

The NOAA center predicted that this current storm could induce auroras visible as far south as Northern California and Alabama.

Around the world on social media, posters put up photos of bright auroras visible in Russia , Scandinavia , the United Kingdom and continental Europe . Some reported seeing the aurora as far south as Mallorca, Spain .

The source of the solar storm is a cluster of sunspots on the sun's surface that is 17 times the diameter of the Earth. The spots are filled with tangled magnetic fields that can act as slingshots, throwing huge quantities of charged particles towards our planet. These events, known as coronal mass ejections, become more common during the peak of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

A powerful solar storm is bringing northern lights to unusual places

Usually, they miss the Earth, but this time, NOAA says several have headed directly toward our planet, and the agency predicted that several waves of flares will continue to slam into the Earth over the next few days.

While the storm has proven to be large, predicting the effects from such incidents can be difficult, Dahl said.

Shocking problems

The most disruptive solar storm ever recorded came in 1859. Known as the "Carrington Event," it generated shimmering auroras that were visible as far south as Mexico and Hawaii. It also fried telegraph systems throughout Europe and North America.

Stronger activity on the sun could bring more displays of the northern lights in 2024

While this geomagnetic storm will not be as strong, the world has grown more reliant on electronics and electrical systems. Depending on the orientation of the storm's magnetic field, it could induce unexpected electrical currents in long-distance power lines — those currents could cause safety systems to flip, triggering temporary power outages in some areas.

my cat just experienced the aurora borealis, one of the world's most radiant natural phenomena... and she doesn't care pic.twitter.com/Ee74FpWHFm — PJ (@kickthepj) May 10, 2024

The storm is also likely to disrupt the ionosphere, a section of Earth's atmosphere filled with charged particles. Some long-distance radio transmissions use the ionosphere to "bounce" signals around the globe, and those signals will likely be disrupted. The particles may also refract and otherwise scramble signals from the global positioning system, according to Rob Steenburgh, a space scientist with NOAA. Those effects can linger for a few days after the storm.

Like Dahl, Steenburgh said it's unclear just how bad the disruptions will be. While we are more dependent than ever on GPS, there are also more satellites in orbit. Moreover, the anomalies from the storm are constantly shifting through the ionosphere like ripples in a pool. "Outages, with any luck, should not be prolonged," Steenburgh said.

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

What Causes The Northern Lights? Scientists Finally Know For Sure

The radiation from the storm could have other undesirable effects. At high altitudes, it could damage satellites, while at low altitudes, it's likely to increase atmospheric drag, causing some satellites to sink toward the Earth.

The changes to orbits wreak havoc, warns Tuija Pulkkinen, chair of the department of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan. Since the last solar maximum, companies such as SpaceX have launched thousands of satellites into low Earth orbit. Those satellites will now see their orbits unexpectedly changed.

"There's a lot of companies that haven't seen these kind of space weather effects before," she says.

The International Space Station lies within Earth's magnetosphere, so its astronauts should be mostly protected, Steenburgh says.

In a statement, NASA said that astronauts would not take additional measures to protect themselves. "NASA completed a thorough analysis of recent space weather activity and determined it posed no risk to the crew aboard the International Space Station and no additional precautionary measures are needed," the agency said late Friday.

While this storm will undoubtedly keep satellite operators and utilities busy over the next few days, individuals don't really need to do much to get ready.

"As far as what the general public should be doing, hopefully they're not having to do anything," Dahl said. "Weather permitting, they may be visible again tonight." He advised that the largest problem could be a brief blackout, so keeping some flashlights and a radio handy might prove helpful.

I took these photos near Ranfurly in Central Otago, New Zealand. Anyone can use them please spread far and wide. :-) https://t.co/NUWpLiqY2S — Dr Andrew Dickson reform/ACC (@AndrewDickson13) May 10, 2024

And don't forget to go outside and look up, adds Steenburgh. This event's aurora is visible much further south than usual.

A faint aurora can be detected by a modern cell phone camera, he adds, so even if you can't see it with your eyes, try taking a photo of the sky.

The aurora "is really the gift from space weather," he says.

A winter vacation is a great cure for the letdown that often comes after the holidays and the "winter blahs" that can set in as the season stretches on. Yet everyone has a different idea of what makes a perfect winter vacation. Some want to ski or at least savor all that goes with a snowy environment — think cozy fireplaces, hot cocoa, mulled wine, crisp air, and mountains draped in white. Others want to avoid the cold at all costs, lounge in the sun, and swim in warm tropical waters.

To help you decide what kind of trip is right for you, here's a look at our top 13 winter vacation ideas for destinations around the United States. These are our favorite places to go in the winter, whether you're looking for the perfect winter wonderland or you prefer sandy beaches to snowy mountains.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Tenley Thompson / iStockphoto / Getty Images

With an average 458 inches of snowfall each year, the ski resorts here — in particular, the popular  Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and Snow King Mountain — attract lovers of the sport. You'll also find other winter-weather activities like snow tubing, snowshoeing, ice skating, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and backcountry skiing. Snowcoach tours to nearby Yellowstone National Park make it possible to explore the area in a warm, comfortable vehicle, offering access to Old Faithful, bubbling mud pots, and wildlife. For another exciting winter adventure, snowmobile tours are offered in Yellowstone and, even closer, Grand Teton National Park.

St. Louis, Missouri

With daytime temperatures often hovering in the 40s, winter in St. Louis might seem downright mild to some residents of chillier cities. If it feels too cold to be outside, though, there's plenty to do indoors. The palatial St. Louis Art Museum , founded in 1879 and moved to its current home during the 1904 World's Fair, is one of the country's premier museums. Visitors can also ride a tram to the top of the Gateway Arch , the tallest human-made monument in the United States at 630 feet, for a spectacular view of the city.

St. George, Utah

A four-hour scenic drive from Salt Lake City (or a two-hour drive from Las Vegas ), St. George offers an appealingly mild desert climate. Though nights can be chilly, daytime temperatures here typically reach into the 50s or even low 60s during the winter months. The historic downtown features a number of interesting museums, galleries, restaurants, and cafes. About an hour away, spectacular Zion National Park is open all year, with hiking and mountain biking trails. Just 15 minutes from St. George, Snow Canyon State Park — with red rock mountains, horseback riding, and gorgeous scenery — seldom sees snow, despite its name.

Louisville, Kentucky

Known for the Kentucky Derby, the Bourbon Trail, the Louisville Slugger baseball bat, and great food , Louisville offers a bevy of indoor attractions and lots of bourbon to keep you warm. Set on the Ohio River along the Indiana border, the city rarely sees snow or freezing temperatures — but if its highs in the 40s and 50s are too chilly for you, you'll still find plenty to do. The Kentucky Derby Museum explores the history of the annual thoroughbred horse race, while the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory will appeal to baseball fans. Bourbon connoisseurs, meanwhile, will want to check out all the nearby distilleries .

Palm Springs, California

If you want to ski in the tracks of old Hollywood royalty this winter, Sun Valley is the place for you. Sun Valley Resort was founded in 1936, and from the beginning drew celebrities like Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable to ski in style, earning it a reputation as the birthplace of destination skiing. Today, the resort offers 2,400 skiable acres spread across two mountains, plus a popular snow sports school . Non-skiers can check out the other winter activities available — from ice skating and snow biking to snowmobiling and sleigh rides — or visit the town, which boasts a range of dining spots, live music venues, and coffee shops.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Travelers who like to spend their winters enjoying indoor attractions will find much to enjoy in Pittsburgh . Art lovers can take in The Andy Warhol Museum (the artist was born and raised in Pittsburgh) and the Carnegie Museum of Art , founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1895. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History , meanwhile, boasts exhibits that both entertain and educate. Pittsburgh's dining scene is growing, with dozens of restaurants, cafes, breweries, and modern food halls to enjoy. Local favorites like pierogies, kielbasa, and a sandwich from Primanti Bros. should definitely be on your food agenda.

Sarasota, Florida

Thousands of snowbirds flock to Sarasota every winter, and with temperatures in the 70s, white-sand beaches, and a thriving cultural scene, it's easy to see why. Travelers of any age will relish the chance to gather seashells or splash in the warm Gulf waters, while, in town, a wide array of shops and galleries offer hours of browsing. Other highlights include the city's extensive collection of midcentury modern architecture and The Ringling complex, which boasts an impressive art museum and a museum of circus history, among other attractions.

South Padre Island, Texas

With temperatures in the 60s, winter is a pleasant season on this small barrier island off the southern Texas coast. The area is a haven for nature lovers, with outdoor attractions like the Laguna Madre Nature Trail and the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary , which includes a five-story viewing tower. The Original Dolphin Watch  and  Breakaway Cruises offer dolphin tours, while Sea Turtle Inc. runs a turtle rescue and rehab center where visitors can get up close to the critters year-round. Boating, fishing, and kiteboarding are popular activities as well, and you'll find plenty of fresh local seafood, including oysters, red snapper, and flounder.

Asheville, North Carolina

Winters are mild in this city in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Hikers can access trails throughout the season, while those seeking winter sports will find ski slopes nearby. Asheville offers quirky galleries, museums, and some of the country's best restaurants , and this is an ideal time to explore them all with minimal crowds. There's no shortage of history here, either. The 1.7-mile Asheville Urban Trail features bronze sculptures depicting figures and events from the city's past, while Biltmore — the sprawling Vanderbilt estate and mansion — offers guided tours that give visitors a glimpse into the Asheville of the Gilded Age.

Honolulu, Hawaii

Ample sunshine, beautiful beaches , brilliant sunsets, and graceful palm trees beckon travelers to Hawaii during the chilly months. Oahu , in particular, is one of the best places to go in the winter, thanks to temperatures that hover around 80 degrees and attractions that range from snorkeling and big-wave surfing to luxury shopping in the boutiques of Honolulu. Visit Iolani Palace to explore the only royal castle in the U.S., and learn all about Hawaiian history at the Bishop Museum or the Polynesian Cultural Center , which is located an hour outside the city on Oahu's scenic North Shore .
