Convenience

Customer service, rates and fees.

Westpac’s credit card designers were certainly at the top of their game when they came up with the Westpac Altitude Black Credit Card (Altitude), which neatly packages most of the features that any credit card user could ask for, even though it comes with the usual hefty fee for a black credit card. If you choose this card, you’ll want to hang around for at least a year to make the most of the multiple benefits, including choice of rewards, high points earning rates coupled with substantial bonus points, and a suite of complimentary benefits.

Westpac’s highest Altitude points earning rate, uncapped

Earn as many Altitude Rewards points as you like, every month, at the following high rates:

  • 6.0 Altitude points per dollar spent* up to $10,000 per month, on flights purchased in Australia directly with Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines, then 1.25 points per $1 spent thereafter
  • 2.0 Altitude points per dollar spent* on overseas purchases, including online
  • 2.0 Altitude points per dollar spent* at David Jones, Myer, THE ICONIC, Spotify Premium, Uber, Uber Eats and Airbnb
  • 1.25 Altitude points per dollar spent* on all other eligible purchases

Sign up bonus points

Get ready for an amazing sign-up perk: Score a hefty 100,000 bonus Altitude Rewards points when you spend at least $4,000 on card purchases within 90 days of getting your account approved. That breaks down to around $1,333 per month, totally doable for those eyeing a black-tier credit card. But wait, there's more! In year 2, upon making your first eligible purchase, you'll snag an extra 50,000 points, bringing the grand total to a whopping 150,000 points.

To give you an idea of what this is worth, 150,000 Altitude points will buy you around $715 worth of retail gift cards delivered electronically. Convert the Altitude points into Velocity frequent flyer points, and the resulting 50,000 points could be used for three return Economy flights between Sydney and Melbourne or Brisbane (46,800 points).

Redeeming Altitude points

There are plenty of attractive options for redeeming your Altitude points, and once you get your hands on those 150,000 bonus points you’ll feel like a kid in a lolly shop:

  • Exchange Altitude points for frequent flyer points* with Virgin Australia, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, and Malaysia Airlines;
  • Get a cashback to your card account* at the rate 14,100 points per $50;
  • Choose a retail gift card*, starting at 4,200 points for a $20 eGift card;
  • Swap points for cinema tickets*, e.g. 19,250 points for two Event Cinemas Gold class tickets;
  • Select from a range of merchandise in an online catalogue, including technology, fashion, homewares, wine, and more;
  • Pay with points* for any card purchase made in the previous 90 days.

Almost every conceivable complimentary benefit

  • Multi-trip overseas travel insurance for trips lasting up to six months, saving you at least $750 a year for a family policy. Activate the cover by using the card for at least $500 of each person’s prepaid trip expenses.
  • Purchase security insurance , providing four months of loss, theft or accidental damage cover against goods purchased with the card (better than competing cards, which limit the cover to three months).
  • Extended warranty insurance of up to 24 months on card purchases (again, an improvement on competitors’ 12 months maximum extended warranty).
  • Price guarantee cover. Price difference refunded if you find a recent purchase advertised at a lower price in a printed store catalogue within 21 days.
  • Interstate flight inconvenience cover for delays, cancellation, luggage loss or damage during trips of up to 14 days.
  • Rental car excess cover, overseas and in Australia.
  • Transport accident cover, providing cash compensation in the event of a serious accident sustained on public transport or a commercial airline .
  • Two free Priority Pass airport lounge passes, every year.
  • Westpac’s 24/7 concierge service for assistance with travel, entertainment, and restaurant information, recommendations and bookings. There’s also a Black Card Concierge app.
  • Altitude Black Card Priority Service telephone line.

That’s quite a list, and it not only matches but often exceeds the benefits offered with other black cards.

The annual fee is typically high

The $295 yearly fee, which includes a supplementary card at no additional cost, is quite standard, considering the benefits of earning points and the added perks. However, newcomers to Westpac can delight in a reduced first-year card fee of $150.

Ongoing interest rates

Anyone interested in a top-of-the-range card like this is unlikely to be concerned by its interest rates since they probably plan to pay off their purchase balance in full every month. But for the record, the purchase interest rate is 19.99% p.a., while the cash advance interest rate is slightly higher at 21.49% p.a.

Some credit cards give you up to 55 interest-free days on purchases, but this isn’t one of them. You’ll get up to 45 days instead — still a valuable benefit — but it does mean that you’ll need to come up with your repayment cash a total of 120 days earlier during the course of a year.

Is the Westpac Altitude Black worth it?

This card is designed for someone who wants it all — and can afford to pay for it — but still expects top value per dollar spent.

Overall, it is a very strong offer that combines a high points earning rate, generous sign-up bonus points offer, airport lounges passes, and free insurance cover that’s better in many respects than the cover provided by competing cards. And since Altitude Rewards points can be transferred to several frequent flyer programs, there's flexibility and availability when it comes to high-value Business and First Class redemptions.

The statement is straightforward and easy to understand.

Mozo snapshot

With the Westpac Altitude Black card, you can choose between either the Altitude Rewards or Qantas Frequent Flyer option. On top of this, you'll also have access to a wide range of complimentary features including concierge, travel insurance and extended warranty. But that's not all! Should you opt-in for the Altitude Rewards option, you can receive 100,000 Altitude points if you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases within 120 days of new card approval, and a further 50,000 points after your first eligible purchase in the second year. Or if you choose the Qantas Frequent Flyer option, you could receive up to 120,000 Qantas Points.

Key features

When you pick up the Westpac Altitude Black online exclusive offer, you can choose between a card linked to the Altitude Rewards program if you like a little flexibility in your redemption options, or the Qantas Frequent Flyer program if you’re all about travel perks.

Choose the Altitude Rewards program, and you can earn 1.25 rewards points per $1 you spend, uncapped.

Additionally, the Westpac Altitude Black card also comes with a number of travel treats such as two complimentary priority airport lounge passes each year – one of which you can now share with a travel companion – which you can use at one of over 1,000 airport lounges around the world. And with the 24/7 on-call concierge service you'll feel like you have your own personal butler.

The card also comes with complimentary comprehensive travel insurance which also extends to your spouse and children who travel with you. All you have to do for the travel insurance to be activated is buy $500 of your pre-trip expenses on your card, like flights or accommodation.

Other standard insurances included with the card are extended warranty, transit accident and purchase security insurance.

There is a $295 annual fee, discounted to $150 the first year for Altitude Rewards, which is a bit steep, even for a rewards card, so be sure to utilise all of the 'free' features you get with the card like travel insurance and a dedicated concierge to get the best value from it. You'll also be up for a $75 Qantas fee if you choose that option, bringing the total annual fee to $370. Apply by 31 July 2024 to get the lower first year fee offer (T&Cs apply).

Who is it good for

With an annual fee of $295, discounted to $150 the first year, your annual spend will need to be over $20,000 before your rewards points start to have any real value. But with no maximum points cap, this card could work out very well for the big spender.

Any catches

If you're opting for the Qantas Frequent Flyer option, a $75 rewards program fee applies.

How do we calculate the rewards?

To work out the "Rewards value minus fees" in our Rewards Revealer we:

calculate how many points you'd get each year,

figure out how many flights or gift cards or cashback credits you could get for those points,

work out what that's actually worth to you,

take off the annual fee you'd pay.

More details:

Our calculations are designed to help you compare the value of different rewards schemes. To do this, we've looked at earning a one-way Sydney-Melbourne flight excluding taxes and charges, a return Sydney-London flight excluding taxes and charges, a $100 shopping Gift Card and $100 cashback. Most cards will also offer other rewards, which may be worth more or less than the ones we've shown.

We have made no allowance for bonus points for using your card at specific merchants, introductory offers or special offers. We have not assigned any value to instant discounts, insurances, ticketing and concierge services or other such benefits.

Rewards value calculations do not take credit card interest into account. If you do not pay off your card each month you may be better off looking for a card based on interest rates than on the value of rewards.

In products that have more than one card, a different mix of spend between American Express / Visa / Mastercard will give different results. Mozo's Rewards Revealer lets you choose the mix based on the way you would use such a product, and gives you tailored results.

We assume flights purchased with airline points are 'classic' or 'reward' economy seats with restricted seat availability. 'Any seat' rewards will probably cost more.

To compare the value of flight rewards, we sample online retail flight prices once a quarter based on the average price on a Wednesday 3 months in advance but outside NSW school holidays. For domestic flights we take the lowest available fare from each flight on that day from Qantas Red e-deal, Virgin Australia Saver including baggage and Jetstar Starter including baggage. We calculate the average price excluding taxes and surcharges for each airline, and also the average across all airlines (which we use when rewards are travel agent vouchers). For international flights, we take the lowest available fares on that same Wednesday from each of Qantas, Emirates, Malaysian, Etihad, Singapore, Cathay Pacific and Thai, assuming a return flight 2 weeks later, calculate the average price before taxes and surcharges and use this as our assumed cost of a flight on any airline.

Shopping rewards are based on $100 gift cards from a major national department store.

We make every effort to ensure our calculations are correct and up to date but make no guarantees.

An easy to use credit card with the added advantage of rewards points earned for every dollar spent. When my card was hacked, the bank proatively called me, helped me to get my new card in an expedited manner due to me leaving for holidays. The customer services was first class and would highly recommend them to others.

Avoid on principle

Considering I was a single mother with two dependents earning only 4 times the amount of credit I was given while only initially requesting half that amount and the destruction this brought to my life (prior to the banking royal commission), I'd suggest you steer clear of Westpac and their past lending practices.

Pros- good for getting qf points. Direct debit payment os easy way of keeping on top of payments. Cons- value of conversion to qf points has gone down. Qf points value has gone down too.

Solid product. Customer service needs improvement

The altitude rewards are great. Customer service was eventually good. I noticed a $1000 fraudulent transaction which required me to call as it couldn’t be resolved online. 4 hours of being on hold only to be disconnected. Finally decided to contact via Facebook and was connected to a person within 15 minutes.

Credit cards are a debt trap.

Credit cards are too easily get into debt plus bank is happy to increase the limit over and over. Interest rates are too high they are greedy for profits and don't care for customers

Creditcard.com.au review

Editor review, who suits the westpac altitude black card, editor’s overall review.

If you spend a lot of time on the road or in the air, the Westpac Altitude Black could make life a little more comfortable and save a dollar or two. It includes a ton of travel perks including lounge passes and global travel insurance.

At $295 per year, it sits in the mid-range of rewards cards, and the annual fee is offset for the first two years by the annual fee discount the first year, and the value of the bonus points on offer.

While many people tend to overlook concierge services, Westpac has upped its game by giving you access to a number of discounts, hard-to-get tickets and exclusive events by partnering with Ten Lifestyle Services.

Editor’s Full Review: the Westpac Altitude Black

The Westpac Altitude Black has a few bright-and-shiny perks to catch your eye, especially if you’re a frequent traveller. It earns Westpac’s Altitude Points, so you can use your points flexibly, including fights with several different airlines.

First, I’ll unpack the promotional perks, and then we’ll look at how this card can be used as a globetrotter’s companion.

Bonus points: The bonus points are split into 2 parts: you’ll get 100,000 bonus Altitude Rewards points if you spend at least $6000 within 120 days of being approved for your card, and then another 50,000 points if you keep the card for more than 12 months.

To be eligible for the bonus points, you can’t have had an Earth Classic, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Classic, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card within the past 12 months. You have to apply and be approved before 30 November 2024.

Bonus points are credited to your account within 12 weeks of meeting the spending criteria. If you don’t meet the spending requirements for the initial 100,000 points, you can still earn the 50,000 points the following year.

Annual fee discounts: For the first year, you’ll pay $150 for the annual fee rather than $295. Existing Westpac customers can get an even bigger discount of $99 for the first year by logging in and applying through the online portal (this offer expires 30 November 2024).

Using the Westpac Altitude Black for travel

Like a well-stocked globetrotters bumbag, this card comes with almost every premium travel perk you could think of.

Let’s start with the different kinds of insurance. Some are specific to travel, and I've also included insurances that protect your purchases.

On top of insurances, you'll also get 2 lounge passes per year with Priority Pass , which has over 1200 premium lounges around the world you can use regardless of the airline you fly with. One of your passes can be gifted to a guest travelling with you, which is a very nice twist on the usual non-transferable rule.

If you want to use a Priority Pass lounge once your free visits are used up for the year, you can still enter the lounge for US$32 per person. You’ll need to enrol in Priority Pass once you have your Westpac Altitude Black card at www.prioritypass.com/westpacblack.

What about the Concierge and Lifestyle Services?

24 hours a day, you can request to have restaurant bookings (including off-beat bespoke requests), appointments, tickets to events, holidays, tours and more organised by a concierge on your behalf. When you book using Westpac’s concierge, you could also get other perks like room upgrades, complimentary breakfast, and exclusive seating at events.

Earning points with the Westpac Altitude Black

This card earns points in Westpac’s own Altitude Rewards program. I’ll explain what you can spend your points on in a moment, but first let’s look at how many points you can earn for your spending, and where.

Points per dollar and bonus points

The Altitude Black card is a little different in that you can earn bonus points for shopping with specific retailers and airlines (called Accelerated Earn). That means you can boost your points pretty quickly.

Here’s how it looks:

6 points per $1 on Qantas, Jetstar, Singapore Airlines and Emirates flights bought in Australia.

2 points for $1 at Spotify Premium, David Jones, Myer, THE ICONIC, Airbnb, Uber and Uber Eats.

1.25 points per $1 on other eligible everyday spending.

⚡ There is no limit to the amount of Altitude points you can earn. However, you’ll only earn 6 points per dollar on flights up to 10,000 points per month; after that, it drops to 1.25 points. On the plus side, there are no rewards program fees, and your points never expire.

Redeeming your Altitude Rewards points

The Westpac Altitude Rewards program is flexible, so you can use your points for almost anything you like. They can be redeemed for gift cards, cash back, with partnering airlines and other travel expenses, and through the Altitude Rewards online store.

Using your points for travel: You can spend your points on flights with Singapore Airlines Krisflyer, Cathay Pacific, Air New Zealand and Velocity. You can also use points for hotels, car hire and activities.

Using your points for cashback: While some cards let you choose a specific purchase on your statement and use points to pay it back, Westpac lets you choose an amount to deposit onto your card. For instance, you can choose to throw $50, $100, $500 or $1000 cashback onto your card.

Using your points for gift cards: Choose from popular retailers such as Bunnings, JB Hi-Fi, Woolworths and Ampol to gift to someone else, or offset your own purchases.

What’s not so great

While this is overall a good card, it does have some things that are worth pointing out. Firstly, you can’t redeem your points for Qantas points on this card (Westpac does offer credit cards that earn Qantas Points directly).

You’ll pay a 3% currency conversion fee when you spend overseas, and a $15 fee if you don’t pay the minimum monthly charges each month.

Who suits the Westpac Altitude Black?

This card is a good fit for people who travel frequently or want to bump up their points from shopping at specific stores. It earns points that can be redeemed flexibly, including with several different airlines. The Priority Pass lounge access is a great bonus and the travel insurance has coverage in Australia and overseas.

Westpac Altitude Black Awards Card – Review

Drew

  • September 25, 2019
  • Debit & Credit Card Reviews

Westpac Altitude Black Awards is the third credit card in my kit bag. It’s a Mastercard, which means it can be used at places where Amex is declined.

In this post:

The Cornerstone Credit Card

I like to separate my international travel and purchases from domestic expenses. We call this the cornerstone card as it is one we continue to use while “flipping” our other credit cards. We have had a wallet and card stolen from a handbag in Covent Garden Markets in London. Julie had her bag slightly open and someone bumped into her in a shop…the cards and wallet were gone in a flash. Julie realised this quickly and let me know. Fortunately we were able to stop the card using the banking app before any money was stolen (even though they tried!). However, it was a real hassle to find and then change all the regular deductions. As a result, I always leave my cornerstone credit card safe at home. The lock block and limit capability is a must when travelling overseas. We use Vodafone $5 roaming plan to ensure we are always connected to our banks. The annual fee for this card is $250 plus $50 if you want to redeem to Qantas. It is backed by Australia’s second biggest bank, which provides peace of mind when it comes to service and customer support.

Google Pay and Apple Pay for travellers

This card is physically left at home. However, in an emergency I can access Google Pay to make any purchases. It is important to be aware that a 3% charge is added to international transactions. At the end of April 2020 Westpac introduced Apple Pay. Simply connecting the card to your Apple device you have a mobile wallet ready to go.

Velocity or Qantas Points

This card is unusual as you can choose to accrue either Velocity or Qantas points for redemption. They usually have a sign-up bonus for both.

westpac altitude black travel insurance review

Points are uncapped at 0.75 per dollar spent. This is a plus as many other cards cap points and my annual card spend can be very lumpy. One great feature of this card is you can switch between programs. With Volocity under a cloud this is a great benefit.

Free international Travel Insurance

As a card I plan to keep for the long haul, I value this feature. To get the free international travel you need to spend at least $500 of your travel expenses before you commence your holiday, and be under 80 years old. I can easily tick both boxes.

Lounge Access – Qantas or Virgin – Plus Priority Pass

This card also provides either Qantas or Virgin lounge passes. As I use the Qantas version, I give the passes to my family. One little known, but relatively simple-to-access feature, is access to the Priority Pass Lounge . While they don’t’ have great coverage in Australia they have over 1300 lounges globally. I recently reviewed the Hong Song Lounge at Hanoi Airport, Vietnam compliments of Westpac Priority Pass. In Australia you can only use them to redeem food vouchers at Sydney, Brisbane and Coolangatta or visit a lounge in Melbourne, Darwin, and Adelaide.

westpac altitude black travel insurance review

While I have had this card for a couple of years, I have not needed to use this feature. Finally, the card provides a concierge service. I find no value in this and have not heard of anyone who has. As mentioned before, I am pretty happy with Google as my travel concierge.

Summary: I value having a cornerstone card that accrues points and I can set up for my regular debits. I want a card I leave at home when I travel, but can still access in emergencies using Google Pay. The Westpac Altitude Black ticks those boxes for me.

Drew

Drew spends 3 months of the year travelling, and 9 months working which is just enough to support a credit card application habit. Destinations are chosen around cycling, hiking or skiing opportunities. For Drew it's as much about the deal as the destination!

Would you, by any chance, know if the fee for this product could be waived for Westpac employees?

My understanding is yes for staff and possibly family members. From memory the benefit exists even after you leave Westpac!!!

We need a post on why you need mobile data when roaming and which product is best.

Absolutely, we have one coming up. I personally use Vodafone’s $5 A Day roaming and it’s the best offer in the Australian market.

Westpac Black and Westpac Platinum cards – what exactly does Travel Insurance cover?

Amy Bradney-George Finder

August 04, 2023

Hi Ivan, Westpac Black credit cards offer complimentary, comprehensive international travel insurance for trips of up to 6 consecutive months – which includes benefits related to hospital and medical emergencies, cancellation, luggage and travel delays. With Westpac Platinum cards, the cover is available for trips of up to 3 consecutive months. Different claim limits also apply, so it’s a good idea to view the full policy document available on the bank’s website. Alternatively, you could call the insurance provider, Allianz on 1800 091 710. I hope this helps.

Hi, I had this card previously but cancelled it in December last year. Will I still be eligible for the Qantas points if I apply? Thanks!

Thank you for your comment.

According to the terms and conditions of Westpac Altitude Platinum Card, existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Platinum or Altitude Black credit card, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer. Therefore, you’re not eligible to receive the bonus points if you reapply, unfortunately.

Regards, Jhezelyn

What is cancellation fee for this Altitude Platinum credit card? Also if I apply for one more card from other bank, would that effect getting this Altitude Platinum credit card?

Hi Muhammad,

Thank you for getting in touch with Finder.

There’s no cancellation fee if you cancel this card. If you apply for another credit card from a different bank, it will not affect your application for this card unless there are too many credit enquiries or card applications which results to a low credit limit.

Please make sure though to read the eligibility criteria, features, and details of the card, as well as the relevant PDS/ T&Cs of the card before making a decision and consider whether the product is right for you.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Cheers, Jeni

With Westpac Altitude Platinum credit card, how many points per $1 do you achieve?

March 02, 2019

Hi Maureen,

You’ll earn 1 Altitude Rewards point per $1 you spend on eligible purchases, uncapped.

March 27, 2018

Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, BPAY. Does this means bills (not through bpay) are ineligible?

Avatar

Thanks for your inquiry.

Yes, that’s correct. If you pay the bills direct from the providers and they would consider it as a “purchase”, then you would earn points for those payments. But when you pay your bills through BPAY, those are not considered as eligible purchases.

Cheers, May

finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We are committed to our readers and stands by our editorial principles

We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.

Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labeling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.

How we make money

We make money by featuring products on our site. Compensation received from the providers featured on our site can influence which products we write about as well as where and how products appear on our page, but the order or placement of these products does not influence our assessment or opinions of them, nor is it an endorsement or recommendation for them.

Products marked as 'Top Pick', 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.

Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money .

When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity.
