Covered in lush greenery spread over an area of 345 sqft, the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. The sanctuary connects Karnataka and Tamil Nadu through the Bandipur and Madumalai parks. Jungle Safari Through Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary in Wayanad

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, is a rainforest that connects the parks of Nagarhole and Bandipur in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu. It is located about 16 kilometres from Sulthan Bathery. The sanctuary, which covers an area of 345 square kilometres, is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna . Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1973 as a wildlife sanctuary in Wayanad and was brought under Project Elephant in 1991-92. It is the second-largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala and one of the bio-geographically richest tracts of peninsular India. Semi-evergreen, moist deciduous, and dry deciduous forests can be found here.

The sanctuary, which is rich in biodiversity, is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The management places a premium on scientific conservation while also taking into account the general way of life of the tribals and others who live in and around the forest region. The Sanctuary is home to a large number of pachyderms and has been designated as a Project Elephant site. Elephants roam freely here, and tigers are occasionally spotted. A variety of deer, monkeys, and birds can also be found here. The Reserve also has a plethora of birds, butterflies, and insects. The trees and plants in the sanctuary are typical of the moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests of southern India. A drive along the road to Muthanga and beyond provides opportunities to observe these roaming.

Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is divided into four ranges: Sulthan Bathery, Kurichyad, Muthanga, and Tholpetty, with the Muthanga and Tholpetty ranges being the most popular with tourists visiting Wayanad. They are divided by plantations. In the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary, there are two eco-tourism centres. Eco-tourism in these locations helps to raise conservation awareness among visitors and to maintain the sanctuary and its grounds in good condition. Jeep Safari through the jungles of Wayanad is the highlighted ecotourism programme in Wayanad. It is a two-hour jeep safari conducted by the forest department with the help of an expert guide. Jeep safaris are conducted in the morning and evening when animal activity in the tourism zone is relatively high.  Note:  You need to hire jeeps from the entrance for the safari.

Wayanad Wildlife Safari

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary visit is a “must do” experiences on a trip to Wayanad. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary consists of two major Wildlife Sanctuaries. The Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is located near to the Kerala-Karnataka Border on Mysore Road. Muthanga is connected with Mudumalai Wild life Sanctuary in Tamil Nadu and Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka. Wild animals including mighty Elephants and Bisons, uncontrollable Blue Bulls, dangerous Tigers and unpredictable Leopards, various species of Deer and Monkeys, are seen here. Wayanad wildlife safari is being organized by Forest Department in two sessions, in Morning and Evening. To get a ticket for Safari one may have to queue up at 0600 h for the morning session and at 1400 h for evening session. The jungle safari is conducted for almost one and a half hour.  Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary Contact No is  04936 – 220454.

Another wildlife sanctuary in Wayanad is at Tholpetty, a small diversion from the road to famous Thirunelli temple. The Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is rich with many animals like powerful Bison, soft and delicate Deer, naughty Langur, very agile Wild Squirrels, Jungle cats, enormous Elephants and numerous birds. There is one watch tower near the lake from where animals can be watched when they come to the lake for drinking water. A two hour safari by jeep is being arranged by the forest department in two sessions; same as Muthanga.

Either of the sanctuaries can be clubbed in your regular Wayanad Tour Package . Guests can be picked within Wayanad or from Calicut, Mysore, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Coorg, Kochi etc for Wayanad Wildlife Safari.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

Wayanad Wildlife Tour from Bangalore for 4 Days, is designed for those who want to explore Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary Safari and more!! Wayanad wildlife tour is suggested during week days to avoid weekend rush. The tour is more of a South Indian Wildlife Tour than sticking to Wayanad Sanctuaries alone. 3 Nights stay at Wayanad will help you to cover four major wildlife sanctuaries in Wayanad and Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka. If you have an additional day, Nagarhole National Park and Mudumalai National Park also can be included. Bandipur Tiger Reserve online booking is available, while Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and Nagarhole National Park do not provide such facility, presently. Bandipur Tiger Reserve Safari Timings are 0630 h and 1530 h (subject to change). Be prepared to sacrifice some sleep, as one of the days you will be moving for a morning safari. Guests will be picked up from Bangalore early morning to ensure that you get the most out of the trip. Good stretch of your journey will be through the forest itself, where you will bump into some wildlife. You can be picked up from Bangalore Airport (BLR) or Railway Station (SBC) by exclusive cab. If you need to be picked up from Hotel or even from home, we can arrange for that.  After 4 Days of visiting Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Tourist Place and Bandipur Safari, the guests will be dropped back to Bangalore.
