Check What our delighted customers are saying about our services

Hi, Wonder.

Ok, my friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the cruise - we upgraded the room which we thot was very good and very well maintained. Even the bath towels are of good quality!

Special mention to our guide Lawrence from the ship - he was assigned to assist us since he could speak English - he was very good and made sure we understood the detailed itinerary. We’re very glad that he was there to help us all along the trip!

We think the pace of the tours were good, and the processes and organisation for embarkation etc were very well thought out, planned and executed. We also enjoyed the narration when the ship cruised through the gorges, I think it was also Lawrence who read out the English descriptions of the cruise and the features that we were passing.

If there was one complaint, perhaps it was that there are not enough lifts in the ship and they didn’t go to the top floor. I think this is especially for older tourists like me!

Thanks, I will certainly recommend your services to my friends and relatives.

Thank you for your kind assistance in organising the private tour for my group.

Firstly, I must said you are very responsible and trustworthy. As this was the first time we got China Discovery to arrange the above tour,

Highly Recommended for your reliability and the excellent service provided.

It was unfortunate that our trip coincided with China May Day holiday as most places of interests were crowded.

My personal opinion, the program could have been better spaced out especially for seniors.

The train from Chongqing to Xian arrived almost at midnight and we reached hotel about 1am. The departure from hotel to see the Terracotta the next morning was 06:30am. Too tight, we barely had 4hrs of sleep. It would be better if the visit to the Terracotta is in late morning or early afternoon. Unfortunately, my wife and I were unable to join the visit to see the terracotta as we find it very tiring after the long train journey from Chongqing. Had to give it a miss.

However, we did enjoy the Beijing tour very much especially with your guide Mr Jackson Liu. He was very cheerful and knowledgeable. Also very helpful.

Overall it was a very enjoyable trip and will definitely recommend my friends to seek your assistance if they are planning a China trip, My wife and myself will definitely engage your services in the near future for our next China tour.

Thank you again.

Beijing Tour

I just wanted to say a big thank you to you and your team. We had a great time in China and we can’t wait to come back.

The last 4 of us are now at the airport waiting for our flight back to London. Everyone says hi and thank you.

thanks for your email. We‘re going back today in the evening.

We will definitely recommend the agency and you too. Everything worked out perfectly.

Best regards

The Three Gorges Tour

Hello Rita,

the cruise was wonderful and perfectly organized. The best things were:

- perfect organization,

- nice Amie, who made me feel welcome,

- very good food; there were enough healthy things for me f.e. salad, fruits, vegetables,

- cappuccino in the bar

- perfect organized (optional) tours

There are some things I would change if I were you:

- Cappuccino should be included and available for breakfast ( I had to ask twice and then they brought it (for € 5, what is very expensive; the other days I went to the bar myself);

- my neighbours (cabin 408) were strong smokers and were smoking on the balcony all the time. The smoke came over to me (when the boat moves), so I couldnt sit on the balcony. Non-smoking should mean, that it is not for smokers. In Germany smoking is out and the people think very much about health. Moreover they were talking at 4.30 h, so I couldnt sleep anymore.

- the announcements in the cabin are annoying. I dont need it. The schedule is enough. I asked them to turn off the announcements and they did :-)

So, it was a wonderful experience and everything worked well.

Best regards from Germany

Dr. Sabine Kohley

Most Important Hong Kong Travel Notes

Visa policy of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is different from that of Mainland China. Hong Kong provides visa exemption to certain certificate owners for any purpose of visiting, and visa/entry permit to citizens (ordinary passport holders) of 170 countries. Otherwise, you need to apply for and get a visa to go to Hong Kong as required. Note: A Chinese Visa is not valid for visiting Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, which are considered as third regions from mainland China. Check Hong Kong Visa Free Countries List & Visa-free Period >>

Hong Kong boasting the top busiest international airport among the world serves about 170 routes to overseas cities and regions in other continents, including New York, Los Angeles, London, Sydney, Toronto, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, etc. Every day, more than 1,000 flights take off at Hong Kong International Airport and need within 5 hours to reach half of the world’s population.

Besides, Hong Kong is very well connected with many cities in Mainland China. Travelers can board a flight to reach Hong Kong from Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Guilin, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and other nearly 50 cities. Also, Hong Kong West Kowloon Station creates new way to get there by high speed trains directly from other 44 cities in the Mainland, including Beijing, Shanghai, Guilin, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Changsha, etc.

(a)Guangzhou to Hong Kong: Guangzhou launches more than 30 daily G trains every day from Guangzhou South Railway Station to Hong Kong, with a whole riding for only about 1 hour. (b) Shenzhen to Hong Kong: there are about 80 high speed trains depart from Shenzhen North Station and Shenzhen Futian Station there very frequently, which takes only 15-20 minutes to get to Hong Kong Kowloon downtown.

Several best ways are provided to travel between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, including high speed train, metro, coach/bus or private car.

● By high speed train: The most convenient and fastest way to go between. Travelers can take high speed train from Shenzhen Futian Railway Station to Hong Kong West Kowloon Railway Station or vice versa. Travelers need to be checked your valid documents at Hong Kong West Kowloon Station no matter you leave or enter Hong Kong. The high speed train journey takes only 14 minutes.

● By metro: Travelers can take Hong Kong MTR East Rail Line to arrive at Luo Wu Station. Then, go through the immigration at Luohu Port (06:30-24:00) to enter Shenzhen. It is suitable for independent travelers.

● By coach/bus: There are some cross-border buses serving from Huanggang Port to many stations in Hong Kong, including Wan Chai, Prince Edward, Kam Sheung Road, and Hong Kong International Airport. However, crossing this Huanggang Port by cross-border buses, you need to get off the bus when arrive at the port and go through the clearance procedure with all your luggage and belongings. After your customs clearance, come out from the customs building and get on the bus to Hong Kong.

● By private car: If you go with China Discovery, we’ll normally use Huanggang Port or Shenzhen Bay Port to go through the immigration.

Both group tour and private tour are available in Hong Kong. You can choose your way to explore Hong Kong based on your time, interests and budget.

● Group tour: If you take a group tour, it means you’ll be picked up at an assigned place, hop on a big bus, enjoy sightseeing with other travelers and then be sent back at an assigned place. It is fixed with some routes, taking either half day or one full day. It is money-saving!

● Private tour: Going with China Discovery in private way, it means you’ll have your personal drivers and cars and be picked up at your hotel and visit the customizable sites/attractions and be sent back to your hotel. It is very flexible! Compared with group tour, it costs much higher.

If you want to explore Hong Kong with full enjoyment at a budget price, it is a good idea to combine group tour and private tour into “one”. You can choose half day group tour to see the classic sites on Hong Kong Island, or one day group tour to Lantau Island, local featured group to explore Kowloon, and the other time and sites to explore in private way. And if you like, you can see it on your own. For more itineraries design info, please contact our professional travel consultants.

Money & Currency: Hong Kong has its own official currency, called Hong Kong dollar. There are banknotes of HK$10, HK$20, HK$50, HK$100, HK$500, HK$1000, and coins of 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, HK$1, HK$2, HK$5, and HK$10. Usually, the exchange rate is HK$1=USD0.128, HK$1=CNY0.88, HK$1=0.1027GBP. For convenience and better rate, it is suggested to exchange some Hong Kong dollars before you go.

Electricity, Voltage & Sockets: The standard in Hong Kong is 220v, 50Hz. And most hotel bathrooms also have outlets for 100v. Most outlets in Hong Kong are for three-pronged UK-style plugs. A power adapter is suggested to prepare for charging your mobile phones, cameras, tablets, etc. And that can be provided in some hotels or found in some supermarkets.

Languages: Chinese and English are both the official language of Hong Kong. Cantonese, Mandarin and English are all frequently used there. Nearly 90% people there speak Cantonese. However, as some people can speak English, especially many young people. Chinese and English are used for signs and notes (Cantonese, Mandarin and English for voice broadcasting on all MTR and most public buses), it is easy to travel in Hong Kong for a foreign visitor.

Hong Kong houses an extremely large quantity of accommodation in downtown and suburb areas. Kowloon and Hong Kong Islands offer more options and are largely more chosen by travelers and business visitors. From world top luxury 5-6 star hotels, to average comfortable hotels to budget homestay and cheap hostels and even berths can be found galore, especially at Tsim Sha Tsui, Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei, Central, Causeway Bay, Admiralty, Wan Chai, Sheung Wan, etc.

For most first-timers to Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui is a top choice, where fabulous view of the Victoria Harbor, many shopping centers and museums are within short distances. Mong Kok and Yau Ma Tei are good to savor Hong Kong local culture with famous Ladies Market, Temple Market and a good portion of budget hotels. Causeway Bay offer many reputable accommodations and is favored for shopping and family visitors. To seek the night life and left historical feature from the colonial era, Central should be at the top of your list.

Many travelers choose to do one day tour from Hong Kong to Macau by ferry. Macau is a popular tourist destination, where a cluster of eye-pleasing heritage building relics, rich types of flavoring food and snacks, strong atmosphere of traditional China and Western world, etc. can be savored handy. Usually, visitors take a fast ferry from Central or Tsim Sha Tsui to Taipa or Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal to start the one-day exploration to the Ruins of St. Paul Cathedral, Senado Square, Section of Old City Wall, A Ma Temple, and Border of Gate and try some tasting Portuguese and Macao food, such as the Portuguese egg tarts, etc. And then, you can take a ferry back to Hong Kong or fly to your next destination very easily.

China’s Greater Bay Area covers Hong Kong, Macau and nine cities in Guangdong Province (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen, and Zhaoqing). Latest reviews from our guests

Our tour guide, Malin, was excellent-she took us to a bunch of interesting locations and helped us get a card for public transportation since we will be here over a week. Highly recommend!

I had an excellent tour with Alfred. Alfred took me to all the places of interest I requested. We saw the Peak, the sea side and a fish village. I particularly enjoy the Victoria prison and the garden at Diamond Hill. Alfred was extremely knowledgeable on the different elements of the history and culture of Hong Kong.

Amazing walking tour, I can’t remember our tour guide’s name…Alfred maybe. He was a Hong Kong native but well traveled. The tour was intense because we had to fit a lot in a small amount of time but Alfred kept a very nice pace. We also had a prettt solid lunch in one of the local restaurants.

He really knew things about HK and able to give History and context and follow what / where we wanted to see

Self-Guided Walking Tour of Hong Kong in a Day

Last Updated: January 19, 2024

I had managed to get something incredibly rare whilst on our Family Round-The-World Trip , a day to myself! The rest of the family was visiting a friend who lived in Hong Kong, so the day was all mine to do with as I pleased!

Quite often I would use time like this to work or do some travel planning. But I felt that, even though we had been in Hong Kong for a few days, we had only scratched the surface.

So I wanted to grab the opportunity to explore more instead.

We often create self-guided walking tours and so I decided this would be something I would do alone today. I had a day, how much could I squeeze in!

I began early, quietly creeping out of our apartment being careful not to wake the rest of the family.

I grabbed some snacks and coffee from across the street to go as knew I wanted to enjoy my breakfast over looking Hong Kong, which was going to be my first stop.

Click Here to see the Google Map Walking Route

Victoria Peak

Victoria Peak , or just ‘The Peak’ as locally known, is exactly what it sounds like. A large hill, around 500m high , that overlooks Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline as well as the ocean.

You can get to the top by walking, bus, taxi or taking the famous Peak Tram .

I went for the tram due to the remainder of my day already involving a lot of walking. The rest of the family did the walk on another day saying it was a pleasant and an easy one, so you can take that option if you prefer.

Getting the tram is easy. You can purchase tickets at the box office at the bottom station or online at The Peak website . It is also often included in various packages and tours.

If you have an Octopus Card , you can just swipe through the turnstile when you arrive. Which will save you queuing at the box office in busy times.

An Octopus card is a top up pre-pay car used for lots of things around the city, especially public transport. It makes getting about very easy so would highly recommend purchasing one as soon as you get into Hong Kong. You can purchase them in most metro stations and some convenience stores.

As I had arrived very early there were no ques and only me and a couple of other people waiting. But later in the day it can get very busy with long waiting times.

Most people want to be on The Peak for sunset so mid afternoon is the busiest time.

The tram departs about every 10-15 minutes . And it’s a really great way to get to the top.

It is an old fashioned style tram running on a very steep track and the novelty is fun and the views are amazing as you ascend.

The top of Victoria Peak itself has numerous attractions and things to do.

With lots of green and wooded walks as well as more commercial attractions such as a mall , cafes and a Madame Tussauds . Most of the commercial attractions. If you’re heading there early they may not yet be open.

But it’s also a great place to just find a quiet spot, have some breakfast and overlook Hong Kong as it wakes up. Maybe then amble around some of the park before heading back to the tram to descend.

Hong Kong Skyline from The Peak

The views really are amazing even though it was a slightly murky day when I arrived. And it was very quiet for me due to the time. So would recommend getting there early and having the majority of the place to yourself.

Hong Kong Park & Edward Youde Aviary

When you alight the tram at the bottom terminus, you are just around the corner from Hong Kong Central Park .

This is a nice little park to have a stroll around and has a cool fountain that you can walk through.

It also has a really nice aviary to explore. Which is completely free .

With an array of colourful birds. Most of them were feeding when I arrived so got to be up close and personal with a number of them.

Golden Bauhinia Square & Victoria Harbour

Golden Bauhinia square is home to the Golden Blooming Flower , which is an iconic landmark. Marking the site where the territory was handed over from us Brits in 1997 .

Once you’ve seen the flower you can take a walk along the promenade, seeing Victoria Harbour in all it’s glory to our next stop.

Central Mid-Level Escalators

The mid-level escalators are novel attraction in Hong Kong, being the longest outdoor covered escalator system in the world.

It was built to help commuters and is a series of separate escalators with numerous entry/exit points. So you can hop in and out of the system where you please.

honk kong mid level escalators

It’ a quirky and fun way to get about and will give your legs a bit of a rest from the walking.

There is also some great art to look at along on the outside of the escalators. And there are numerous shop and restaurants dotted all along the route.

Ser Wong Fun (for some snake soup!)

Time for lunch and if you have ever wanted to try snake then Hong Kong may be the place.

It is pretty common in Hong Kong with a few different places selling it.

I went for ‘Ser Wong Fun’ as it was just off one of the exits from the escalator and one of the more affordable options (as snake is not cheap). With the snake soup being around 100HKD (£10) .

hong kong snake soup

The soup also has other ingredients in it such as chicken and crispy fried wonton skins .

I was a little dubious about how much snake was actually in it, but after a bit of digging I realised there was a reasonably fair amount.

The snake itself didn’t actually taste that different to the chicken! But a bucket list food ticked off non-the-less.

Man Mo Temple

Man Mo Temple is one of the oldest in Hong Kong, dedicated to the God of War and Literature . You often find students in here praying for success in academia.

It has hundreds of hanging incense. It is free to enter and photos can be taken, with no strict dress code, but obviously be respectful.

Ferry Across Victoria Harbour

It’s always nice to get on the water, so take a stroll down to the main ferry port and get the ferry across to Tsim Sha Tsui Ferry Pier .

This is a short ferry ride and is a nice way to see Victoria Harbour from another angle.

Tickets can be purchase at the port, but again the easiest way will be if you have an Octopus card and just swipe through the turnstile.

They leave around every ten minutes and take about 10-15 minutes to cross .

There a few ferry ports here so ensure you go through the the appropriate one for Tsim Sha Tsui. But they are clearly signposted so it’s pretty easy.

Kowloon Park

We’re now on the peninsula part of Hong Kong in the Tsim Sha Tsui area where there is a huge park named Kowloon Park .

There’s lots of gardens and lakes to walk around.

If you’re lucky you may be able to witness one of the martial arts performances that are held in the park regularly.

Another good place to have a snack, finding a nice quite patch to sit and eat whist you watch the world go by.

Avenue of the Stars

Stroll down to the Avenue of the Stars , which is similar to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. With hand prints, stars and statues immortalising various famous names.

It’s a nice wonder down the promenade, this time looking across to the side where the majority of the day was spent.

You can grab some food from one of the many venders ready for the light show, the final stop of the day.

Symphony of Lights Show

Every night a free light show is performed on both sides of the harbour named the Symphony of Lights .

The sky scrapers are lit up with lights and lasers that flash across the sky in sync with music from speakers dotted along the promenades.

It starts at 8.00pm lasts about 15 minutes .

It is completely free, you just need to find a good spot on the promenade where you can sit and enjoy.

Get there a few minutes early to get your spec. Try to be near one of the speakers you’ll see dotted about so you can hear the music, but it is quite loud so you don’t have to be right on top of one.

This is where I reunited with the family at the end of my day. I had certainly seen a lot more than I usually would with the kids in tow and was quite impressed with myself, but also pretty tired.

We sat and watched the show before heading back to our apartment, which of course was a twenty minute walk away!

Urban Walking Tours

Our cultural walks show you the historical traces as well as the values, beliefs and hopes of Hong Kong’s past and current residents. We give you the background stories so that you understand what you see, and are able to make sense of how and where this fascinating city stands in history and in the current world. Hong Kong has morphed from a small colonial trading port into an international city, has been occupied by the Japanese during WW2, was the big manufacturer in the 70’s and 80’s, and is a big financial hub since the 90’s. The territory was handed back to China in 1997 and currently functions as a Special Administrative Region … all these phases have influenced and formed the city’s fabric visually and culturally. We are happy to guide your discovery of this unique and colourful place that Hong Kong is.

About Walk in Hong Kong

Walk in Hong Kong is the city’s leading cultural enterprise. We specialize in curating memorable experiences — be it tours or immersive events, in-person or virtual — that tell the mesmerizing stories of our bustling metropolis.

We are known for our wonderful storytelling . We make what might otherwise be dry history lessons into memorable experiences , rooted in Hong Kong’s people and culture. Our skills transcend the real and virtual world, and allow us to curate equally engaging journeys both offline and online . Our walking tours are well loved by travellers, corporates, schools, families, and locals alike.

Coming from a variety of professional backgrounds, each of our knowledgable guides has plenty of personal stories to share about this fair city. Most importantly, they all live a shared passion to promote Hong Kong beyond what's in the usual guidebooks.

Our vision does not stop there. While we are not an NGO, we are a company with a strong social mission. Despite our small scale, we are an influential advocate for heritage conservation and driving social changes . In 2016, our team successfully lobbied for a Grade 1 historic building status for State Theatre in North Point, helping preserve one of the city's most important theatrical venues.

Entrepreneurial spirit is deeply embedded in the company’s DNA.

Walk in Hong Kong is born!

State theatre conservation: achieved grade i historic building status, hsbc youth business gold award, hong kong lgbt+ inclusion index top sme employer award, collaborating with the hong kong tourism board in creating the old town central campaign, first hang lung young architects program completed, sham shui po hong kong tourism board campaign, earned tripadvisor certificate of excellence hall of fame status, pioneered hong kong's first online live virtual tours, achieved hong kong awards for industries: innovation and creativity certificate of merit with our online virtual tours.

Walking Tours in Hong Kong

Surprisingly compact, Hong Kong is an easy city to explore on foot. If it weren't for the harbor, you could walk everywhere. If, for example, you're in the Central District and want to have dinner in Causeway Bay, you can walk there in less than an hour, passing through colorful Wan Chai on the way. Causeway Bay is good for exploring thanks to its many shops patronized by locals, a street market, a Japanese department store, Times Square shopping complex, and restaurants. Another great place for walking is Sheung Wan in the Western District just west of Central, fascinating because it encompasses a wide spectrum of traditional Chinese shops, from chop makers to ginseng wholesalers. If you like panoramic views, nothing can beat the hour-long circular walk on Victoria Peak.

On the other side of the harbor, a walk up Nathan Road from the harbor to the Yau Ma Tei subway station takes less than 30 minutes, although you might want to browse in some of the shops and department stores along the way. For easy strolling with great views of the harbor, walk along the waterfront promenade that stretches from the Star Ferry all the way through Tsim Sha Tsui East.

Be forewarned that sidewalks and streets can be crowded at the end of the work day as people rush to buses and subway stations for trips back to the suburbs.

What follows are four recommended strolls. If you're interested in additional self-guided walks throughout Hong Kong, be sure to pick up the free HKTB pamphlet called Hong Kong Walks, which covers points of interest in Central, the Western District, Wan Chai, Shau Kei Wan (location of the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence), Tsim Sha Tsui, Yau Ma Tei, Mong Kok, and Wong Tai Sin and Kowloon City districts. For more information, contact the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB; tel. 852/2508 1234 ). You can also download the pamphlet at HKTB's website, www.discoverhongkong.com.

The Urban Renewal Authority (URA), the city’s redevelopment body, has announced a series of free “citywalk” tours in Central and Sheung Wan to showcase Hong Kong’s history and vibrance.

A graffiti in a building located in Chung Wo Lane, which is painted by an artist commissioned by URA. Photo: URA.

The body will hold 40 guided tours in October catering to over 500 local residents or tourists, URA’s managing director Wai Chi-sing said on Sunday.

These tours will highlight the URA’s redevelopment projects as well as historic spots, shops and street art in Central and Sheung Wan, Wai said.

The tours will feature the three themes – history and architecture; food and community; and art and culture.

The URA will recruit and train tour guides, targeting Central and Sheung Wan residents in particular, Wai added.

The Central and Sheung Wan neighbourhood is home to a number of the URA’s completed redevelopment projects, including Central Market and Pak Tsz Lane Park near PMQ. It is also the site of a 67,200 square metres redevelopment project in the vicinity of Peel Street and Graham Street. The redevelopment involves plans for residential buildings, courtyard spaces, a multi-purpose activity hall, a hotel and other structures.

Citywalk, a style of tourism that promotes exploring the city on foot and taking photos, has become popular especially among mainland Chinese tourists in the post-pandemic era .

“While conducting urban renewal projects, the URA not only strives to improve people’s living conditions and quality, but to bring vibrance to old communities with different approaches, to strengthen connections among different stakeholders and enhance a community’s uniqueness… thereby boosting the district’s economy and support the development of tourism,” Wai wrote in Chinese.

The Central and Sheung Wan tours will be part of the project’s pilot scheme. The managing director said he also hoped to hold tours in other parts of the city after the scheme, including in Kowloon City and the Flower Market – both districts with large-scale URA redevelopment projects.

‘Urban decay’

Established in 2001, the URA was granted powers by the government to purchase land from private owners and sell land to developers to address “urban decay” and improve living conditions in old districts.

redevelopment, flower market

Over the past 10 years, it has been accused of transforming places of culture and history into homogenous shopping malls and high-end residential estates in the process of redevelopment.

Its recent proposal to redevelop the Flower Market district in Mong Kok triggered criticism from residents, florists, scholars, pro-establishment lawmakers who have questioned the looming commercialisation and expressed concern that the project could destroy the vibrancy of the century-old market .
