Abu Dhabi Vacations
Introduction, at a glance, when to visit, what to pack, areas of abu dhabi, attractions.
Enjoy an unforgettable vacation in Abu Dhabi. The capital of the United Arab Emirates may not have all the glitz of Dubai – and that’s intentional, with a much more measured approach to tourism and a big cultural focus. But it still has plenty of superlatives of its own to boast about - from the fastest roller coaster in the world, to cappuccinos sprinkled with gold.
In between all that are some excellent beaches, lots of fun ideas for family getaways and historic and cultural attractions aplenty, with many more to come including the Louvre Abu Dhabi, finally set to open this year. Look forward to the vacation of a lifetime.

Soak up the sun on the beach at The Corniche, try the world’s fastest rollercoaster at Ferrari World, sip a gold-flecked cappuccino at Emirates Palace, or head out to historic sites in the desert – there’s a lot to try in this year-round destination.
- Check out Abu Dhabi’s thrill-filled Yas Island, with its Ferrari-themed rides, adrenalin-fuelled waterslides and the region’s Formula One circuit.
- Make a visit to UAE’s only UNESCO World Heritage site at Al Ain, where signs of life uncovered date back to the Stone Age.
- Admire the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world, with space for around 41,000 worshippers beneath its 82 domes.
- Due to open by the end of 2017, Louvre Abu Dhabi will have more than 600 pieces of art in 23 galleries.
- Be wowed by other architectural marvels, such as The Capital Gate, which is the world’s furthest leaning man-made tower - it leans 18°.
- Head to the Observation Deck at 300 on the 74th floor of Tower 2 at the Etihad Towers complex – you can even have afternoon tea up there.
Expect year-round sunshine and high temperatures. October to April provides the most pleasant option (there is a small potential of rain and wind January through to March), with temperatures around 25-28C, but from May onwards, these really rocket, and between June and September, you could find yourself in upwards of 40C heat and humidity.
The high temperatures of the region require light, breathable clothing, but always have a cover-up for when you hit the air-conditioning in hotels and malls. Abu Dhabi is the capital of a Muslim country, so dress respectfully (women should wear clothing that covers the shoulders and the knees in shopping malls, and if entering a mosque, hair must be covered also). Desert trips are best in comfortable safari-type clothing.
Abu Dhabi is the largest of the UAE’s seven emirates, and is also its capital, containing 80% of all the UAE’s landmass, an archipelago of 200 islands and 400km of coast, as well as far-reaching desert and mountains. Abu Dhabi’s second most important region, known as the Eastern Region, has Al Ain city as its hub city.
Abu Dhabi City
As the capital of UAE, Abu Dhabi is the centre of government and business life, along with the headquarters of the emirates’ oil operating companies and all international embassies – along with many iconic buildings, such as Emirates Towers. Most of what you will see in the core of Abu Dhabi lies on a series of interconnected islands jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. This area is where you will find the stunning beaches on Saadiyat island, all the fun of Yas island and essential stops such as the Corniche and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
This western region makes up more than two thirds of the emirate and is home to some very impressive sand dunes, hundreds of kilometres of coastline and ancient forts. Here you will find Liwa, historic oasis town and entry point to Rub Al Khali, or Empty Quarter, the world's largest single expanse of desert. Perhaps surprisingly, it’s also home to a large date palm plantation of more than 100,000 trees. Stay out here at the Qasr Al Sarab resort and go for dune dawn walks, camel trekking, dune bashing, falconry shows and camp fire barbecues. Throughout the year, there are many events in Al Gharbia, including everything from epic hill climbs to camel beauty contests and date festivals.
Two hours’ drive from Abu Dhabi city lies Al Ain, meaning “the spring” in Arabic, and deriving from its once plentiful supply of fresh water. It was also always known as an important trading post, with traces of settlements going back to the Stone Age. It has the honour of being UAE’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of UAE founding father Sheikh Zayed. In the area is the Al Ain Palace and Al Ain National Museum, along with the Al Ain Oasis, spread over nearly 3,000 acres, with more than 147,000 date palms. The Al Jahili Fort was constructed as the summer residence of Sheikh Zayed in the 1890s and later expanded by the British in the 1950s. While in the area, you can also go “wadi bashing” – exploring dry riverbeds in a 4WD – hike in Jebel Hafeet, or visit the camel market. There’s even a 1.6km go-karting track – Arabia’s largest – out here at the Al Ain Raceway.
Restaurants offer a cosmopolitan range of options, many under the names of top global chefs. But if you want to sample local food, you will find rich flavours with cinnamon, saffron and turmeric, nuts, limes and dried fruit often used. Try a mezze platter with four or five appetiser dishes and some Emirati specialties such as Al Harees, a dish of meat and wheat slow-cooked in a clay oven or pot and served with ghee; Al Majboos - boiled meat with spices and dried limes; and Al Madrooba, a mix of salted fish, spices and thick sauce. Follow it with sweet desserts, such as Baklava and a traditional Arabian coffee. Alcohol is tolerated in the plentiful hotel bars and restaurants.
Long before the shimmering skyscrapers arrived, the region’s resilient nomadic tribes wandered great distances with their camels in search of grazing. Oases were the heart of life, date gardens were cultivated and watered by an efficient traditional irrigation system known as falaj and later, pearling was the mainstay of the economy. But despite the speed of economic development since the discovery of oil more than 50 years ago, Abu Dhabi has focused on maintaining and promoting traditional culture such as falconry, camel racing and dhow sailing. But it’s useful to remember that Islam is more than a religion; it is a way of life that governs everyday events from what to wear to what to eat and drink. Men wear the kandura - a white full-length shirt-like garment and women wear the abaya, a long, loose black robe that covers their normal clothes, plus a headscarf called a sheyla.
Out of seemingly barren lands, come lush oases of date palms, acacia and eucalyptus trees. The conditions are perfect for some of the 54 terrestrial species of reptiles known to be found in UAE, while Hawksbill turtles nest on the nine-kilometre Saadiyat Beach. The Arabian Gulf is home to numerous whales, dolphins and sharks, as well as the second-largest population of dugongs in the world after Australia – around 75% of the 5,300 dugong population live off the Abu Dhabi coast, with the emirate involved in conservation projects for these gentle giants. On Sir Bani Yas Island, there is a nature reserve with around 13,000 free roaming animals, including a 500-strong herd of Arabian Oryx and five cheetah.
Tribal Bedouin have long traded with passing merchants from the likes of Iran, China and India. The Bani Yas tribe was the most significant in the region and settled around Liwa Oasis in 1761, with Al-Nahyan as the ruling family, later moving to what would become Abu Dhabi. A boom followed the growth in pearl trade in the 19th century; not without problems though, and in 1892, a deal was signed for the Trucial States to become a British protectorate. In the 1950s, oil was discovered, with the first cargo leaving Abu Dhabi in 1962. When the UK withdrew from its protectorate role, six trucial emirates agreed to become the United Arab Emirates, with Ras Al Khaimah joining the following year. The federation was formally established in 1971 with Abu Dhabi as its capital.
Saadiyat Island
This is the best place to go for beaches, just seven minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi. Also on the island is the upcoming cultural quarter, which when complete will be home to the Zayed National Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. So far, the Louvre looks like finishing first. In the mean time, check out the visitor centre, Manarat Al Saadiyat; stay in one of the five-star resorts - the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort and Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi; or book a spot at the Saadiyat Beach Club, with a 400-metre beach, all you need to enjoy a day in the sun and restaurants Safina, De La Costa and Cabana 9.
Sir Bani Yas Island
This is one of eight islands that make up Desert Islands in Al Gharbia and is home to around 13,000 free roaming animals as part of a conservation project. Hotelier Anantara was allowed to create three environmentally sensitive, small hotels on the island and there are abundant activities, purpose-built stables, historical sites – and the island is even home to UAE’s only discovered Christian monastery, dating to 600AD. More than half the island is made up of the Arabian Wildlife Park, one of region’s largest, with animals including Arabian Oryx, gazelles, giraffes, hyenas and cheetahs.
This impressive man-made island is an entertainment playground for adults and children and is home to the world’s fastest roller coaster, Formula Rossa, reaching a top speed of 250kmph in 4.9 seconds. You’ll find that at Ferrari World, the world’s largest indoor theme park, along with Flying Aces, featuring the highest rollercoaster loop in the world. Also on the island is Yas Marina Circuit, the home of Abu Dhabi’s Formula One track, where you can try a multitude of driving experiences. There’s also Yas Beach; Yas Marina, with sleek yachts, restaurants and bars; Yas Waterworld, a mega waterpark with 43 rides; and Yas Mall with hundreds of shops, plus VOX Cinemas and a Fun Works family entertainment zone.
Liwa is how you might expect true Arabia to look - 250km south of Abu Dhabi, there’s endless desert and towering dunes here, including – at almost 300 metres – one of the world’s tallest, Moreeb. The area is also deemed particularly important, given it’s the birthplace of the Al Maktoum and Al Nahyan families, who now rule Dubai and Abu Dhabi respectively.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
The nation’s largest mosque, Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque was unveiled in 2007 as the vision of the man it is named after, Sheikh Zayed, whose mausoleum is on the same site. Built in white marble and with 82 domes and four minarets, it contains the world’s largest hand-knitted carpet - made in Iran - and seven chandeliers containing millions of Swarovski crystals. The mosque is open daily to visitors (except on Friday mornings, when it is for worshippers only), but 5pm is a great time to visit, as you get to see it around sunset.
Emirates Palace
Even if you aren’t staying there, try and visit the Emirates Palace hotel, which when it opened in 2006, was deemed the most expensive hotel ever built and proclaimed itself as the “world's first seven-star hotel”. The Abu Dhabi government wanted to make a grand statement and they certainly achieved that with this kilometre-long, sand-coloured, 114-domed building. Maybe dine at one of its restaurants, such as Hakkasan, or indulge in one of the famous Palace Cappuccinos at Le Cafe - sprinkled in real 24-carat gold flakes; it costs around £13 (AED60).
Jebel Hafeet
The second tallest peak in UAE, this 1,240m-high limestone mountain appears out of the wide-open landscape south of Al Ain and shares a border with Oman. It’s home to red foxes, feral cats and the rock hyrax, which resembles a large rabbit and there are more than 500 ancient burial tombs dating back 5,000 years in the area. Most people drive, but some super-fit cyclists also test their mettle on the journey, a winding highway that rewards with views over Al Ain and a place to rest-up at the Mercure Jebel Hafeet hotel. Also out this way is Wadi Adventure, the region’s only man-made white water rafting, kayaking and surf facility – including the world’s largest man-made surf wave, at 3.3-metres.
An essential part of any visit is a stroll along the Corniche, a manicured 8km seafront promenade with children’s play areas, cycle lanes, cafes and restaurants and the Corniche Beach, which has been awarded coveted Blue Flag status. The Corniche comes in three separate sections - for families, singles (there is a small entry fee to go into those two areas of the beach) and the general public. You can also hire a bike to cover more ground and tour the area.

Abu Dhabi Holidays
- Travel guide
Between Bedouin desert sands and gilded, white-washed mosques, discover an island of opulence under the sun on Abu Dhabi holidays.
The scorching heat hits you first, followed by the sultry scent of oud, and then the sight of those epic palace-style hotels – they don’t make them small in this part of the world. Neither do they scrimp on architectural marvels. Abu Dhabi’s leading Islamic mosque is hung with Swarovski chandeliers and covered with the largest Persian carpet ever made and a hotel’s colossal curved steel and glass LED canopy pretty much overlaps the renowned Formula One® racetrack.
We love Abu Dhabi holidays for the remarkable contrasts; fantastical dining and ostentatious shopping, Arabian desert, religious temples and world-class art – the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a futuristic filigree half sphere masterpiece museum, home to the world's most expensive painting, Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Salvator Mundi’. There’s the haze of shisha smoke drifting from one lavish bar to another, coconut and sandalwood coming from opulent spas, and shimmering waters in meandering pools overlooking the Arabian Gulf. Buckle up at Ferrari World for a ride on the world’s fastest rollercoaster, swim across Corniche Beach with a backdrop of spectacular Abu Dhabi skyline and take afternoon coffee at Emirates Palace where cappuccinos are laced with 24-carat gold flakes.
Middle Eastern tradition and culture also thrive – holidays to Abu Dhabi take you through hot springs and pools to some 500 tombs at UNESCO World Heritage Site Jebel Hafeet and to the Empty Quarter’s red hot desert sands filled with dune bashing, henna painting and sand boarding, ending with a sunset Bedouin dinner – tribute to the Arabia that came before the glossy restaurants and lavish resorts.
Speak to a Personal Travel Expert and we’ll help plan your Abu Dhabi holiday.

Get to know Abu Dhabi and those important practicalities when planning your perfect holiday.

United Arab Emirates Dirham
Where is Abu Dhabi? In the Arabian peninsula on the north-eastern side of the Persian Gulf, Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, is an island city just 250 metres from the mainland, connected by four bridges: Maqta bridge, Mussafah bridge, Sheikh Zayed bridge and Sheikh Khalifa bridge.
Culture Despite the rapid rise of modern hotels, shopping malls and theme parks, you can still experience Arabic culture on a holiday to Abu Dhabi. Visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, a fine example of Islamic architecture that welcomes over 50,000 worshippers a day to its marbled interior. Wander through the souks where traditional handicrafts are for sale or take a trip into the desert for a glimpse of Bedouin life.
Beaches If you’re looking for sand there’s plenty of it, particularly when it comes to Abu Dhabi’s beaches. Many are blue flag rated and there are stretches of both public and private beaches. Lined with a boardwalk of cafés and restaurants, Corniche Beach is one of the most popular. The beach at Yas Island is a favourite with families whilst on Saadiyat Island, the beaches are home to hawksbill turtles and its surrounding waters are a protected marine reserve. Many of the resorts and hotels in Abu Dhabi have access to a private beach, complete with shady cabanas and sunbed service.
Getting around Bus services have networks throughout the emirate while silver taxis and metered limousines are also popular methods of transport. Hiring a car is easy and convenient and roads are good – although often gridlocked during rush hour.
Shopping Abu Dhabi’s shopping malls are almost out of this world, packed not only with designer stores and high-end brands but also cinemas, entertainment and dining. You’ll find the very best of Arabic sweets and pastries, cult perfumeries selling hand-made scents and even ice rinks, bowling alleys and musical fountains. Shopping highlights include Yas Marina Mall, Al Wahda Mall, Avenue at Etihad and The Galleria.
Food and drink Red snapper and ceviche, Persian cuisine, omakase Japanese tables, restaurants with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto wild beaches and rooftop bars where cocktails come with a serving of smoke: nightlife in Abu Dhabi is exciting, innovative and lavish. Mostly found in hotels and resorts, you’ll find candlelit dining with Arabian Gulf views, stylish cafés with vegan menus and sky-high delights overlooking Yas Marina and afternoon tea 300 metres up at Etihad Tower’s Observation Deck 300.
Multi-centres The emirate of Abu Dhabi has established itself as a major global transport hub by connecting Abu Dhabi International Airport to destinations all over the Middle East, the Indian Ocean and on to the wider world. This enviable connectivity makes Abu Dhabi a convenient stopover point and a fabulous component of an exciting multi-centre itinerary with dynamic Dubai, the peaceful sands of Fujairah or the traditional sights of Ras Al Khaimah and Oman all within easy reach. Further afield, Abu Dhabi can be combined with the cities of Hong Kong and Singapore or the beaches of the Maldives, Seychelles or Mauritius.

Lounge on a beach and enjoy uninterrupted views of the startlingly blue Arabian Gulf by day. Then sit under an endless blanket of stars in the desert and experience gourmet cuisine with a Bedouin twist by night. Abu Dhabi might be small on the map but it has variety and a well-earned reputation for satisfying visitors' every desire. From those looking to be pampered and treated like royalty, to those wanting to race dune buggies at sunset – or even catch a Formula One race – the diminutive emirate of Abu Dhabi has you covered.
Explore Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi airport has connections worldwide, and Dubai airport is just 90 minutes drive away. Chauffeur driven car, helicopter or seaplane are the most convenient modes of transport around the emirate.
Climate & seasons
March to mid-May and October to November are the two prime beach seasons. December to February is the chilly season. The end of May to September are the 50ºC Summer months when all action moves indoors. Early December is when the unmissable F1 Grand Prix roadshow comes to town.
Where to go
Abu Dhabi’s destinations pretty much split into three categories – the beach, the desert or the city. Fortunately, you don’t have to choose one over the other, even those staying for just the shortest time can have their cake and eat it too. It’s just a 2-hour drive from opulent beachfront luxury on the Corniche or Saadiyat Island to adventure excursions at remote desert hideaways – or a much quicker helicopter ride.
Visit Saadiyat Island to relax on a beach, play a round of golf or wander the Louvre. Sir Yas Bani Island for fabulous wildlife encounters. A remote luxury camp on the edge of Rubʿ al-Khali Desert for a spellbinding sand dune experience. The Ferrari World Amusement Park to get you in the mood for the F1 Grand Prix in December. Or the spectacular Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – home to the world’s largest carpet.

When to Visit
The United Arab Emirates enjoys a hot climate and little rain, so holidays work well no matter when you travel. The busiest time is from November to April when temperatures are coolest, perfect for outdoor adventures, beach activities and water-based sports. During the summer months, the heat can rise to 40°C or higher, but visitors can find bargains on hotels, enjoy indoor decadence at all-inclusive resorts or cool off at stylish beach clubs with white-sand beaches. The Islamic month of Ramadan varies each year, so check the dates before travelling as opening hours of attractions and restaurants can be affected.
What to Pack
Due to the intense summer heat, lightweight clothing, sunscreen, and sunglasses are essential when travelling this time of year. Winter months and trips to air-coned attractions call for coverups, long-sleeved tops and trousers.
When visiting cultural sites, it is important to respect tradition and dress appropriately – men must wear trousers not shorts, whilst women will be asked to cover their head, midriff, legs, shoulders, and arms. Generally, communal clothing items are provided in places where these rules are enforced however, it is courteous to be aware of Islamic dress and respect such beliefs whilst visiting Abu Dhabi.
Where to Stay
Whilst the natural beauty of Saadiyat Island is difficult to top, the 27-square-kilometre land mass is populated with breath-taking man-made attractions designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize winners. Home to the Abu Dhabi Louvre and Manarat Al Saadiyat (Arabic for ‘place of enlightenment’), art and connection are widely celebrated here in the capital of creativity. Additionally, the island is known for itspicturesque, protected beaches inhabited by the endangered Hawksbill turtles; enjoy a sunset walk or visit the exclusive Saadiyat Beach Club for a livelier seaside experience.
In just a 5-minute car ride from downtown Abu Dhabi, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a collection of luxurious hotels and the Arabian Gulf’s first beachfront golf course. The Saadiyat Beach Golf Club was designed by South African golf-pro Gary Player, respectfully mirroring the islands natural landscape. Enjoy culture, beaches & a game of golf whilst residing in stunning resorts such as Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island & Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas .
The Corniche offers visitors an 8-kilometre-long promenade sandwiched between the glistening skyscrapers of the city and the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf. Soak up the sun on the beach or hire bicycles and ride around fountained park areas. Visit attractions including the Capital Gate, Marina Mall , and Lulu Island accessed via private boat and home to a handful of selective restaurants and coffee shops with activities including camel and horse riding.
If where city meets beach floats your boat, there are a selection of luxury 5* hotels situated along the Corniche coastline including the stunning Sheraton & Corniche Hotel , or the famous beachfront property Emirates Palace .
Abu Dhabi’s blossoming entertainment destination has an attraction to suit every taste. Visit Yas Marina Circuit , home to the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix , for on-track racing experiences. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi is home to two record-breaking rollercoasters, the world’s fastest at 240 kmph, and the world’s tallest inverted loop at 52m. Meet all your favourite characters at Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi or make a splash at Yas Waterworld , voted the best waterpark in the Middle East. Brand new to open on the island is CLYMB Abu Dhabi – an indoor facility offering the world’s tallest climbing wall and widest skydiving chamber.
For an adrenaline inducing, action-packed adventure trip Yas Island hotels are perfect for your Abu Dhabi holiday, some of our favourites include the W Abu Dhabi , Crowne Plaza & Yas Island Rotana .

This colossal masterpiece can house more than 40,000 worshipers and boasts unmatched decadence and detail, from the 24-carat-gold gilded chandeliers to the world’s largest handmade carpet. It is set on 1.3km of private, pristine beach on the city’s magnificent Corniche, with suites furnished in gold and marble, acres of gardens and 114 domes of Arabic architectural splendour. Emirati royalty and visiting dignitaries stay on the top floor in the six Rulers' Suites. To feel like a royal yourself, try their world-famous cappuccino with real gold flakes!
Qasr Al Hosn
For those seeking out a more historic landmark, Qasr Al Hosn is the oldest stone building in the city and a national monument. Designed by Mohammed Al Bastaki and built around the 1790’s this statuesque icon is otherwise known as the watchtower. Many refer to Qasr Al Hosn as the most significant buildings in Abu Dhabi as it has been home to an array of prominent entities including the ruling family and the government as well as a consultative council and then a national archive. Its walls have seen a multitude of happenings of which tourists and locals alike find fascinating to visit.
Desert Safari
Just beyond Abu Dhabi city is the Rub Al Khali, or Empty Quarter, the largest expanse of sand in the world, recently depicted in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as the desert planet of Jakku. Take a day trip for dune bashing in 4x4s, camel trekking, sand surfing, and dinner beneath the stars. Alternatively, escape the dunes for an open jeep safari on Sir Bani Yas Island, home to thousands of free roaming oryx, gazelles, giraffes, and even cheetahs.
Island Cruise
Take to the waters and experience the city of Abu Dhabi by boat. Relax on deck and experience a guided tour through both the inshore channels of the city and the coastline of Samaliyah Island. Spot both wildlife and city lights on the sunset tour sailing by Raha Beach, past the traditional beachfront Emirati village of Samaliyah to circle back to Yas Island. A sensational experience combining both luxury and adventure.
Louvre Abu Dhabi
The magnificent Louvre Abu Dhabi establishes the city as the cultural hub of the Middle East, with a permanent collection complemented by masterpieces on loan from key French institutions, including works by Titian, Rodin, Picasso, and Matisse. The galleries depict the story of humanity with each chapter focusing on shared ideologies that connect people to one another. As well as their permanent collection, the Louvre Abu Dhabi hosts 4 rotational collections each year following a complimentary thematic approach.
This world-renowned artistic hub features a fantastic Children’s Museum, in a special two-floor section of interactive learning. Whilst also offering a rooftop café, allowing visitors to end their day with sunset views of the Arabian Gulf.
Observation Deck at 300
Experience the city of Abu Dhabi from 300 metre up. Venture above the clouds and enjoy clear, birds-eye views of the city below. Located on the 74th floor of the Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers is the cities highest vantage point, enabling those brave enough to secure outstanding skyline captures, beach snaps and sea shots. Grab a sky-high snack in the cafe famous for its afternoon tea or take to the cocktail menu with their signature Etihad Sparkler.
Emirate cuisine is traditional of the UAE’s heritage and has only recently started gaining in popularity. Although the city offers a multitude of restaurants spanning all types of international cuisines, national dishes traditionally combine Middle Eastern & Asian ingredients enhanced with local herbs and spices for a totally unique, must-try flavour. Abu Dhabi’s national dish isKabsa, an infused mixture of basmati rice, either lamb or chicken, vegetables, and an array of spices, traditionally served in a large pot placed in the centre of the table. Local drinks consist of Gahwa, otherwise known as Arabic coffee and is often served as a welcome drink alongside a cup of dates. Another local favourite is Jallab, a fruity syrup drink made up of grape molasses, dates and rose water. Such drink is popular during Ramadan when Muslims need a drink to keep them hydrated during their daylight fast.
Events & Festivals
Eid al adha.
Seen as one of the most important celebrations in the Muslim calendar, Eid Al Adha is the festival of sacrifice marking the end of Hajj. The celebrations commemorate the annual pilgrimage to Mecca and prophet Ibrahim’s sacrifice of his son.
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
As the UAE’s Formula One motor race destination, Abu Dhabi has hosted a prestigious Grand Prix since 2009 on the contemporary Yas Marina Circuit designed by Hermann Tilke. Experience 55 laps of high speeds, atmosphere, and adrenaline as you sit in one of 5 grandstands built to shade spectators from the dazzling desert sun.
Abu Dhabi Golf Championship
One of 6 professional golf tournaments in the UAE, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship is highly anticipated annual sporting event. Founded in 2006, it is particularly famous for its ‘Hero Challenge’ and starting the ‘Race to Dubai’ season attracting some of the world’s top players.
Taking place early in the year, many golf fanatics time their Abu Dhabi visit to coincide with such an occasion. Although this year’s tournament has already taken place, don’t miss your chance to get close to the action in 2022.
UAE National Day
When visiting Abu Dhabi during December, your visit may fall across United Arab Emirates’ National Day. A joyous celebration marking the union of the seven states and an impressive sceptical for both locals and tourists to experience. From firework displays to street parades, the celebratory festivities take place across the entire Gulf and are not to be missed.

Introduction
The capital of the United Arab Emirates may not have all the glitz of Dubai holidays – and that’s intentional, with a much more measured approach to tourism and a big cultural focus. But it still has plenty of superlatives of its own to boast about - from the fastest roller coaster in the world, to cappuccinos sprinkled with gold. In between all that are some excellent beaches, lots of fun ideas for family getaways and historic and cultural attractions aplenty.

Soak up the sun on the beach at The Corniche , try the world’s fastest rollercoaster at Ferrari World , sip a gold-flecked cappuccino at Emirates Palace , or head out to historic sites in the desert – there’s a lot to try in this year-round destination.
• Check out Abu Dhabi’s thrill-filled Yas Island , with its Ferrari-themed rides, adrenalin-fuelled waterslides and the region’s Formula One circuit.
• Make a visit to UAE’s only UNESCO World Heritage site at Al Ain , where signs of life uncovered date back to the Stone Age.
• Admire the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque , one of the largest mosques in the world, with space for around 41,000 worshippers beneath its 82 domes.
• Louvre Abu Dhabi is the biggest museum on the Arabian Peninsula with more than 600 pieces of art in 23 galleries.
• Be wowed by other architectural marvels, such as The Capital Gate , which is the world’s furthest leaning man-made tower - it leans 18°.
• Head to the Observation Deck at 300 on the 74th floor of Tower 2 at the Etihad Towers complex – you can even have afternoon tea up there.
When to visit
During your holiday to Abu Dhabi, expect year-round sunshine and high temperatures. October to April provides the most pleasant option (there is a small potential of rain and wind January through to March), with temperatures around 25-28C, but from May onwards, these really rocket, and between June and September, you could find yourself in upwards of 40C heat and humidity.
What to pack
The high temperatures of the region require light, breathable clothing, but always have a cover-up for when you hit the air-conditioning in hotels and malls. Abu Dhabi is the capital of a Muslim country, so dress respectfully (women should wear clothing that covers the shoulders and the knees in shopping malls, and if entering a mosque, hair must be covered also). Desert trips are best in comfortable safari-type clothing.
Areas of Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is the largest of the UAE’s seven emirates, and is also its capital, containing 80% of all the UAE’s landmass, an archipelago of 200 islands and 400km of coast, as well as far-reaching desert and mountains. Abu Dhabi’s second most important region, known as the Eastern Region, has Al Ain city as its hub city.
Abu Dhabi City
As the capital of UAE, Abu Dhabi is the centre of government and business life, along with the headquarters of the emirates’ oil operating companies and all international embassies – along with many iconic buildings, such as Etihad Towers.
Most of what you will see in the core of Abu Dhabi lies on a series of interconnected islands jutting into the Persian Gulf from the central western coast. This area is where you will find the stunning beaches on Saadiyat Island , all the fun of Yas Island and essential stops such as the Corniche and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque .
This western region makes up more than two thirds of the emirate and is home to some very impressive sand dunes, hundreds of kilometres of coastline and ancient forts. Here you will find Liwa , historic oasis town and entry point to Rub Al Khali , or Empty Quarter , the world's largest single expanse of desert.
If you want adventure during your holiday to Abu Dhabi, this is a region you must visit.
In the area is the Al Ain Palace and Al Ain National Museum , along with the Al Ain Oasis, spread over nearly 3,000 acres, with more than 147,000 date palms. There’s even a 1.6km go-karting track – Arabia’s largest – out here at the Al Ain Raceway .
The Arabian Gulf is home to numerous whales, dolphins and sharks, as well as the second-largest population of dugongs in the world after Australia – around 75% of the 5,300 dugong population live off the Abu Dhabi coast , with the emirate involved in conservation projects for these gentle giants.
If you're looking for a richer history of the Arabian Gulf then check out our Oman holidays where evidence of life dates as far back as 100,000 years.
Attractions
Saadiyat Island
This is the best place to go for beaches, just seven minutes from downtown Abu Dhabi. Also on the island is the upcoming cultural quarter, which when complete will be home to the Zayed National Museum , Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi . In the mean time, check out the visitor centre, Manarat Al Saadiyat ; stay in one of the five-star resorts - the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort ; or book a spot at the Saadiyat Beach Club , with a 400-metre beach, all you need to enjoy a day in the sun and restaurants Safina, De La Costa and Cabana 9.
More than half the island is made up of the Arabian Wildlife Park , one of region’s largest, with animals including Arabian Oryx, gazelles, giraffes, hyenas and cheetahs.
Abu Dhabi holidays are not complete without visiting Yas Island. This impressive man-made island is an entertainment playground for adults and children and is home to the world’s fastest roller coaster, Formula Rossa , reaching a top speed of 250kmph in 4.9 seconds. You’ll find that at Ferrari World , the world’s largest indoor theme park, along with Flying Aces, featuring the highest rollercoaster loop in the world. Also on the island is Yas Marina Circuit , the home of Abu Dhabi’s Formula One track , where you can try a multitude of driving experiences. There’s also Yas Beach ; Yas Marina , with sleek yachts, restaurants and bars; Yas Waterworld , a mega waterpark with 43 rides; and Yas Mall with hundreds of shops, plus VOX Cinemas and a Fun Works family entertainment zone.
The nation’s largest mosque, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was unveiled in 2007 as the vision of the man it is named after, Sheikh Zayed, whose mausoleum is on the same site.
Even if you aren’t staying there, try and visit the Emirates Palace hotel , which when it opened in 2006, was deemed the most expensive hotel ever built and proclaimed itself as the “world's first seven-star hotel”.

IT’S not often that I will turn to rom-coms for travel advice.
Yet as I drive through Abu Dhabi ’s Saadiyat Island, where 15 years ago desert and shrubs stood, and now shining soon-to-be skyscrapers, I find myself agreeing with Sex And The City’ s Samantha: Abu Dhabi is the new Middle East.
The pace of change here means you can expect something new each year — super-luxe hotels and restaurants and high-tech entertainment attractions that make those in Europe look old hat.
Abu Dhabi — Dubai’ s rich big sis — is the capital of the UAE and no amount of money has been spared on making sure we all know it.
Yet a holiday here isn’t just for the wealthy. Far from it.
Now that British Airways has relaunched direct flights from Heathrow after a four-year hiatus, bringing some well-priced competition to a market dominated by UAE airline Etihad , holidaymakers have greater choice when it comes to both cost and flight times.

A camel ride topped my bucket list thanks to the exploits of my Abu Dhabi guru Samantha — played by Kim Cattrall — in Sex And The City 2. (Disclaimer: Most of the film was shot in Morocco).
Before reaching the camels, though, my Desert Rose group- safari tour began with a much less traditional sport — dune-bashing.
More thrilling than most roller coasters I have been on, the tyres of our 4X4 were deflated a little to give it more bounce as we thundered over mighty sand dunes with almighty force.

Speeding over their soft peaks, we crashed down the other side at such a steep angle that the roof and windows became submerged in sand and our group gripped on to headrests, handles and just about anything stable.
It was nail-biting stuff and, truth be told, I was rather grateful for the more mellow pace of our Bedouin camp when we reached it 20 or so minutes later.
At the foot of another huge dune, the desert refuge was a sight to behold — glowing in the amber light of a slowly sinking sun.
Here you can sample many age-old desert traditions, ranging from camel rides and henna painting to sand surfing and shisha smoking.
All of this is included in the price of a tour package — another great way to keep costs down.
You must scramble to the top of the dune before you surf it.
But I didn’t mind this so much when the reward was one of the most impressive sunsets I have ever seen, turning the epic sandscape red before it gradually became engulfed in darkness.
At the centre of our camp was a stage bordered by traditional rugs and low tables with cushions for seats.
Dinner was included too — a buffet of traditional, spice-laden curry dishes, creamy hummus and crispy falafels alongside some Western dishes such as tomato pasta, chips and green salads to keep younger tummies happy.
It seems the concept of dinner and a show is fully embraced in Abu Dhabi — and although the belly dancer and fire-eater who wiggled across the stage were not traditional to this part of the world, they are still entertaining.
But do bring a jacket, as the desert can get chilly once the sun sets, even in balmier seasons. I was grateful for the respite, though, after spending most of the day in 35C spring heat.
And I certainly welcomed the powerful air-conditioning that hit me as I strolled into the entrance of Warner Bros World on Yas Island the next day.
This was possibly the most pleasant theme park I have ever visited — and not just because the full- blown rollercoasters and thrill rides are crammed into one super air-con palace.
We queued no longer than five minutes for each ride and workers assured us that even at weekends it remains relatively quiet here.
Where should you head first?
Batman: Knight Flight was a big hit, propelling me into the city of Gotham in an alternate reality — as I was tasked with defeating The Joker, while TV screens with animated videos juddered in time with my seat.
After chowing down on burgers with Bugs Bunny, I got my culture fix on Saadiyat Island — home to the Louvre gallery, which has an agreement to share the name of the museum in Paris and borrow many of its artworks.
It is a real gem, allowing you to admire the works of masters such as Renoir, Picasso and Monet without lengthy queues.
This is also the place to head for five-star seafront luxury where restaurants offering any cuisine you can imagine spill out on to sun-drenched beaches, and luxury hotels abound.
On the mainland, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the prettiest place of worship I have ever seen, while the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental hotel is a landmark in its own right.
The resort is so vast that you will need a golf buggy to make your way around the immaculately kept gardens and golden fountains.
The sheer opulence, impeccable hotel service and not-too-shabby price tag made me question why I had never looked to Abu Dhabi as a holiday destination before.
All this plus the fact that the three-hour time difference for visitors from the UK means there is no jet lag.
Perhaps it had always been overshadowed by the glitz and glam of Dubai or maybe it was the lack of culture — I now know that is not true, after my visit to Saadiyat which in 2025 will also be home to a Natural History Museum and the Zayed National Museum.
I arrived back at the five-star Jumeirah on Saadiyat Island in time to catch the last hour of afternoon sun.
By this point it was streaming on to my balcony and through the glass doors so much that my bed was swimming in sunlight.
I flopped on to it, letting my head sink into a marshmallow-like stack of pillows.

Who needs the beach or pool when you can sunbathe from bed?

Cvent announces Top Meeting Destinations and Top Meeting Hotels in Europe for 2024
The industry-acclaimed annual rankings recognise the top-performing hotels for MICE business, as well as the world’s most coveted meeting destinations
LONDON & FRANKFURT, GERMANY – Cvent , an industry-leading meetings, events, and hospitality technology provider, released its lists of the Top Meeting Destinations and Top Meeting Hotels for Europe . These lists – which also include regional rankings for North America, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East & Africa – were compiled based on sourcing activity through the Cvent Supplier Network, one of the world’s largest venue-sourcing platforms. More than $16B of MICE business was sourced through Cvent’s online platforms in 2023.
Cvent Top Meeting Destinations | Europe
While the Top 10 cities remained consistent year-over-year with London retaining its #1 ranking from 2023, Madrid (#3) moved up after a strong year in which the city hosted 20 conferences with over 1,000 participants, driving an economic impact of 88 million euros. Berlin (#4) moved up two spots, reflecting the city’s continued prioritisation of the MICE industry such as hosting ITB Berlin, and curating events and programmes that support event organisers’ needs such as BESTIVAL and Sustainable Meetings Berlin.
Top 10 Meeting Destinations
“We’re delighted to once again lead the Cvent Top Meeting Destinations in Europe list. London saw significant growth last year with 30 new hotels. This year, we’re on track to nearly double that number. We’re particularly excited about the upcoming transformation of ExCeL London, with a £200 million investment breathing new life into the venue. Cvent has been instrumental in showcasing what London has to offer and bringing us great new clients. We truly value the partnership,” said Fiona Plumpton , Head of London Convention Bureau Services .
“We’re delighted to have retained our position on Cvent’s Top Meeting Destinations, reaffirming Barcelona’s status as a premier choice for corporate and incentive gatherings in Europe,” says Christoph Tessmar , Director of the Barcelona Convention Bureau . “A big highlight is the collaborative spirit of the Barcelona and Catalan community that naturally extends to our MICE industry, fostering innovation and teamwork in event planning. Moreover, Barcelona’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its eco-friendly venue options and carbon-neutral initiatives, ensuring that events are both memorable and environmentally responsible.”
Cvent Top Meeting Hotels | Europe
Meliá Castilla moved up three places to take the number one spot this year. The hotel made significant improvements to its meetings and events offerings including state-of-the-art LED screens and Wi-Fi speed and continues to prioritise a zero-carbon footprint. These enhancements reflect planners’ focus on technology and environmental sustainability when sourcing hotels for their events. Newcomers to the Top 10 include NH Collection Madrid Eurobuilding (#3), Lisbon Marriott Hotel (#5), Hilton Barcelona (#6), Meliá Avenida América (#8) and AC Hotel Barcelona Forum (#10).
Top 10 Meeting Hotels
“Being recognised as the #1 Cvent Top Meeting Hotel in Europe is an incredible honour. We have a strong meeting and event-focused culture at Meliá Castilla and this recognition is a testament to our deep commitment to building lasting relationships with our planners to deliver great events,” said Marcos Mellado , Director of Sales at the Meliá Castilla. “Cvent is to Meliá Castilla, what technology is to Meliá Hotels International. We cannot imagine our present, much less our future, without technology. Cvent gives us the chance to reach clients all over the world, helps us deliver exceptional experiences by enabling better communication, and gives our teams access to data that helps us anticipate our tactical sales movements and build on the right strategies to achieve our goals.”
“We are honoured and delighted to be recognised as the #3 Top Meeting Hotel in Europe by Cvent,” said Angel Villegas , General Manager, NH Collection Madrid Eurobuilding . “The recent renovations in our meeting rooms, each bathed in natural light, have helped our property stand out to planners who are looking for state-of-the-art audio-visual technology for more efficient, high-impact meetings. We’re deeply committed to providing best-in-class service to our guests and our recently refreshed restaurant and bar offers a sophisticated, dynamic space to host exceptional events. Cvent continues to be a key and preferred partner of the NH Collection Madrid Eurobuilding as we look to welcome even more groups and events to our incredible property located in the heart of Madrid.”
