 1. shop for local arts and crafts at avenida lopez mateos.

Avenida Lopez Mateos is the main tourist street in Ensenada that runs parallel to the waterfront. Here you will find many shops that sell souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, leather goods, cigars, and more.

You can also find some of Ensenada’s best restaurants and bars that serve delicious local cuisine and drinks.

Probably the best shop to discover the local arts and crafts here is Bazar Casa Ramirez, which, as of writing this article, is also the #1 shopping destination in Ensenada on TripAdvisor.

This two-story store offers a stunning collection of festive items that showcase the creativity and diversity of Mexican artisans.

You can find everything from folk art, silver jewelry, crosses, and mirrors to pottery, textiles, masks, and sculptures. Each piece is hand-made and imported from different regions of Mexico.

On these streets, I also loved trying the delicious cafes, bakeries, and restaurants.

Those looking for a cultural and historical experience in Ensenada should not miss the Museo de Historia de Ensenada and the Regional Historical Museum in the city.

These museums will take you on a journey through the past of this beautiful city and its surroundings, from prehistoric times to the modern era.

At the Museo de Historia, visitors can see artifacts, photographs, and interactive displays that bring Ensenada’s history to life.

The exhibits cover the history of the area, from its pre-Hispanic origins to its role in the Mexican War of Independence, as well as its development as a center of fishing, agriculture, and tourism.

The Regional Historical Museum is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building that was once the municipal jail. One of the most interesting features of this museum is the old prison cells where paintings by former inmates are preserved on the walls.

The museum also offers an exhibit of “Peoples and Cultures of Mesoamerica” and colonial and indigenous collections related to Ensenada’s past.

Along the way, you can enjoy the scenic drive along the Pacific coast and stop at various viewpoints to admire the views.

6. Hike Through The El Salto Canyon And See The Waterfall

Adventure seekers who are visiting Ensenada should not miss this one. The hike is challenging but rewarding. You will need to use ropes, and boulders, and scramble over rocks to reach the bottom of the canyon.

The trail is not marked and can be slippery, so make sure you wear good shoes, gloves, sunscreen, and insect repellent. You will also need to pay a small fee to enter the area.

Once you get to the canyon floor, you can enjoy the scenery and relax by the waterfall. You can also camp there if you want to spend more time exploring. The El Salto Canyon and Waterfall is a hidden gem that will make you feel like you are in another world.

Disclaimer. I didn’t have time for this hike, but since I read it was a great hiking experience I still wanted to include it in the post for you to learn about it.

You can contact them and learn more or just drive to the campground where you can also set up your own tent and spend the night.

In addition to the stunning views and bustling atmosphere, El Malecón Ventana al Mar is also a great place to experience local culture.

You can often find street performers and musicians entertaining crowds, and there are plenty of opportunities to try traditional Mexican snacks and drinks.

If you are in luck, as I was, you can see the fountains dancing around the huge Mexican Flag towering over the Marina.

PRO TIP – You can ask one of the fishermen by the pier to take you on a brief tour along the bay to admire the coastline and the cute sea lions swimming around. It only costs 500 pesos, for 1 hour and they will do it even for one person.

Cañon de Doña Petra Park is located just 15 minutes away from downtown Ensenada and offers one of the best opportunities for hiking enthusiasts. The challenging trail here is 13.3 miles (21.4 kilometers) long and takes about six hours to complete.

If you’re looking for a challenging hike while you’re in the area, you can’t miss this one. The trail is rated as moderate to hard, with some steep and rocky slopes that require poles.

You will encounter different microclimates along the way, from desert landscapes to oak forests.

The dense vegetation in some areas provides shade and coolness on hot days.

Before embarking on the trail, make sure to bring plenty of water, and sunscreen, and wear sturdy shoes.

It’s also a good idea to bring a snack or two to keep your energy levels up. With the right preparation, hiking this trail will be an unforgettable experience.

If you are traveling solo I would hire a local guide as it’s not very smart to be in the wilderness on your own. Also watch out for rattlesnakes, especially in the summer.

11. Taste The Original Margarita at Baja California’s Oldest Cantina: Hussong’s

Hussong’s Cantina is a legendary bar that was established in 1892 by John Hussong, a German immigrant who came to Ensenada during the gold rush.

His bar, as it stands today, is among the top of Ensenada’s tourist attractions.

It is the oldest and most famous bar in all of Baja California. And for good reason, it is reputedly the birthplace of the margarita, the iconic cocktail made with tequila, lime, and orange liqueur.

According to the story, bartender Don Carlos Orozco named the drink in 1941 after Margarita Henkel, the daughter of a German diplomat who was visiting the bar at the same time as Don Carlos was experimenting with a new drink.

The drink was received very well, and on the same day, it was named after Margarita Henkel.

12. Discover The Art of Chocolate-Making at Maya Cacao

Who doesn’t love chocolate? But not a lot of people know that the Mayans played a significant role in the history of chocolate as we know it today.

They revered chocolate and it was an important part of their culture and belief system.

Maya Cacao is a place where you can experience the ancient art of chocolate-making as practiced by the Maya civilization.

You can taste cacao beans from colorful pods, grind them with stone tools, and enjoy a traditional dark chocolate drink that was reserved for the elite Mayas.

You can also participate in a workshop where you will learn about Mayan culture, and make your own chocolate (following the authentic recipe of the Mayans).

13. Relax in The Uncrowded, Clean Beaches of Playa Hermosa

If you’ve ever been to a beach in a tourist destination that’s known for its beaches, you know a lot of those beaches can get very crowded.

Playa Hermosa (meaning “Beautiful Beach” in Spanish) is different. It is one of the best-kept secrets in Baja California, offering uncrowded, clean, and serene shores for you to enjoy.

Best of all, it’s easily one of the top free things to do in Ensenada.

One of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of Ensenada is to take a boat trip around the bay.

However, taking a boat trip in Ensenada is still a cool thing to do to watch the sea lions and birds, over the Pacific coastline.

16. Try The Food From The Famous La Guerrerense Food Cart

La Guerrerense is a humble street stand that has been serving fresh and delicious ceviche and tostadas for over 40 years and has earned the praise of celebrities like Anthony Bourdain and Mark Wiens.

But it’s not just the food that makes La Guerrerense special; it’s the experience. The food cart is located in a bustling street market, where locals and tourists alike gather to enjoy the lively atmosphere and mouth-watering dishes.

The service is fast and friendly, and the owner, Sabina Bandera, is always ready to greet you with a smile.

The experience is so good that some reviewers have called this the “best food cart in the world.” Whether that title is true or not you will tell me.

To be honest, I didn’t try that one, but I found another incredible food cart that I recommend. See below.

Besides the iconic places that everybody knows, you will find a lot of food carts in Ensenada that offer equally delicious seafood. I have tried a few of them and here below are my favorites:

El Güero is where I had the most delicious seafood tostada in my life! I am serious. The food cart itself is a must-see, so well organized and clean and the guys dressed up in yellow and blue uniforms. Adorable.

The seafood looks extremely fresh and the way they serve it is incredibly professional. It’s more expensive than a regular street food cart but you pay what you are getting.

Also, the amount of seafood that you get is giant. It makes a full meal.

When is The Best Month To Go to Ensenada?

The best month to go to Ensenada depends on personal preferences and interests. Generally, the peak season in Ensenada is during the summer months of June through August when the weather is warm and many festivals and events are happening.

However, as you can guess, prices for accommodations and activities will be high during this time.

For those looking to avoid crowds and save money, the shoulder seasons of March through May and September through November offer a good balance between good weather and slightly lower prices.

You’ll still enjoy many of Ensenada’s attractions and festivals during these times, with fewer crowds and more affordable accommodations and activities.

If you want to maximize your savings, visit during the winter months of December through February, when temperatures can be cooler and rain is more common.

However, you’ll find great deals on accommodations and activities during this time.

I was there in February and I loved the cool weather, and most of all I loved that I didn’t see any snakes around.

In the summer it is most likely that you see rattlesnakes around your hotel room, easily. I know I freaked out when I learned about it. Just make sure you close your hotel room door and window and you’ll be fine.

Ensenada, 108km south of the border, is hedonistic Tijuana’s cosmopolitan sister. The city has a quirky mix of just-off-the-boat cruise shippers, drive-by tourists from California, visitors from mainland Mexico and seen-it-all locals. In case you’ve forgotten you’re in Mexico (what with all those US dollars and English menus), just look up: a Mexican flag, so large it’s probably visible from space, flutters proudly over the malecón (waterfront promenade). Wander Avenida López Mateos (Calle 1a) and you’ll find almost anything ranging from delicious French food to tasteless T-shirts. Don't miss the dancing musical fountain on the waterfront if you've got kids.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ensenada

Where is ensenada.

Ensenada is a city in Mexico, on the northwestern, Pacific coast of the country in the state of Baja California. Ensenada is just 110 km south of the US border at Tijuana, and 135 km (84 miles) south of central San Diego in California. Ensenada is over 2825 km from Mexico City – at least 36 hours by road. The nearest major airport is at Tijuana (a 1 hour 45 minute drive from Downtown Ensenada).

How big is Ensenada?

Ensenada has a greater metro population of almost 525,000, though it’s central core is relatively compact. Downtown or “Zona Centro” is focused on the busy waterfront and harbor, where the fishing fleet and cruise ships dock, and runs inland for several blocks. Although there are no beaches in the center, a long strip of sand runs along the wide Bahía de Todos Santos (Bay of All Saints) for almost 20km, beginning with Playa Hermosa just to the south.

What is the history of Ensenada?

Ensenada was officially “founded” in 1542, but this really denotes when the area was discovered by the Spanish (Quechan- or Yuman-speaking peoples had lived here for thousands of years). It remained little more than a village until gold was discovered nearby in 1872. Ensenada was then developed as a mining port, and was designated capital of Baja California in 1882 – the modern city was planned and developed by the British-owned Mexican Land & Colonization Co in subsequent decades. Devastated by the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920), Ensenada lost its capital status in 1915 and remained a backwater until tourism took off in the 1950s. The annual Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race began in 1948 (Humphrey Bogart took part in the first race), while the famous Baja 1000 motor race started in Ensenada in 1962 (the Baja 500 followed in 1969).

How do I get to Ensenada?

Ensenada does have a tiny airport, but this only serves a couple of locations in Baja California. The nearest major airport is at Tijuana, which is connected to numerous destinations within Mexico by non-stop flights, though there are at present no international flights. Most European flights to Tijuana will route through Mexico City. Buses run from Tijuana airport direct to Ensenada; taxis can also be taken, but these are expensive (at least US$80), though a lot more convenient.

In practice, most US and Canadian visitors come to Ensenada by cruise ship or by car (see below), though it’s relatively straightforward to visit by bus. These shuttle back and forth between the US border at Tijuana and Ensenada bus station every hour or so and take around 1 hour 30 minutes.

Ensenada is well known for the excellent wineries in the area.

Can I use Uber in Ensenada?

Uber is available and cheap in Tijuana, though not usually for airport pick-ups, where a local taxi monopoly operates – use official airport taxis or buses instead from Tijuana airport. Uber drivers in the US cannot take passengers across the Mexican border – walk across the border and order another Uber on the Mexican side, and vice versa.

Once in Ensenada (assuming phones have the app and has roaming in Mexico), Uber can offer convenience and cheaper rates over traditional taxis. In addition, a service dubbed “uberVALLE” offers day-long, round-trip rides to the Valle de Guadalupe wine region from Ensenada – just select “valleX” in the Uber app (the driver will wait at the various vineyards).

Can I drive to Ensenada?

Driving down to Ensenada from the US border is easy and straightforward – the main four-lane Highway-1D is in good condition all the way (allow 1 hour 30 minutes), though we’d advise leaving Tijuana as quickly as possible if that’s the point of entry. There are three tolls coming south from Tijuana (around US$5 total in peso) on Hwy-1D (“cuota” means toll), but the original two-lane Hwy-1 can also be taken, which is free (allow at least 2 hours on this road). The drive should also take around 1 hour 30 minutes from Tecate, and just over 3 hours from Mexicali.

Another plus: foreign vehicles do not need a Mexican “Temporary Importation of Vehicle Permit”, as long as they stay on the Baja peninsular.

If are renting a vehicle, it’s much easier to do this once across the Mexican border, as taking US rental vehicles into Mexico comes with all sorts of restrictions.

water splash at geyser

Tourists enjoying the splash of the waterfront geyser.

Do I need a car in Ensenada?

A car isn’t really needed in Ensenda. Most of what there is to see and do lies within Downtown, which is easily explored on foot. Local buses, taxis, and Uber cars can be taken to destinations outside the city relatively cheaply. To do exploring in the surrounding countryside, including the Valle de Guadalupe, having a vehicle can be more convenient. It’s also possible to arrange car rental on arrival in Ensenada; Alamo, Enterprise, and Hertz operate in the city, along with several cheap Mexican rental outfits.

How do I get around Ensenada without a vehicle?

Walking is the best way to see Ensenada, but it’s relatively easy to find taxis (or arrange an Uber) for longer trips to the beaches, or to La Bufadora.

When is the best time to go to Ensenada?

Ensenada has a mild, Mediterranean-like climate – it stays relatively dry year-round (though it’s slighter wetter in the winter than the summer) and experiences surprisingly cool weather December to March. In general, the summer months – June through September – are the best times to visit, as the weather is hot but not unbearable, and the beaches are therefore a lot more appealing. It also doesn’t rain much. However, visiting in October/November or April/May will still mean warm weather without the crowds (and cruise ship visitors). Whale-watching is also best December to April.

Where should I stay in Ensenada?

Most tourists in Ensenada stay in Centro (Downtown), where there’s a wide range of accommodation – the cheapest places lie further inland from the seafront and along Avenida López Mateos. The bigger and posher resorts tend to be located along the coast to the north and south – a pricey taxi ride from Downtown. These are recommended primarily for travelers with their own vehicles.

What are the best beaches in Ensenada?

The best beaches in Ensenada lie beyond Downtown. Our favorite is Estero Beach, a relatively tranquil spot with soft sand some 13 km south of the city. Day passes that provide access to pools, restaurants, and activities are usually available at the posh Estero Beach Hotel here (the hotel takes up much of the seafront but the public section is known as El Faro Beach). Otherwise, Playa Hermosa just south of the port is pretty good, with locals keeping the sand clean and umbrellas available to rent for a few pesos. For experienced surfers, the best spot is Playa San Miguel, 13 km north of Downtown.

waterfront tourists

Tourists enjoying the beautiful waterfront.

Where to change money in Ensenada?

Though the Mexican peso is the official currency in Ensenada (often prefixed with a “$” sign), many hotels, restaurants, and vendors will accept US or Canadian dollars (especially when cruise ships are in town). However, change will often be given in pesos, and US/Canadian dollar prices invariably work out to be higher than peso prices because of inflated exchange rates.

Try to use ATMs to withdraw peso cash in Ensenada if possible (check with the bank before leaving to confirm it’s possible to use a debit card and how much they will charge – using credit cards can incur interest or foreign transaction fees). Credit cards are widely accepted, but cash is needed for buses, most taxis, and small purchases.

What are the best things to do in Ensenada?

In Ensenada itself it’s fun to visit the Riviera del Pacifico , a Spanish Revival-style casino and hotel completed in 1930 and now a cultural center. Inside there’s a small but absorbing history museum and Bar Andaluz, an atmospheric spot for a drink. Across the street, the Caracol Museo de Ciencias is a new-ish science museum that’s primarily aimed at kids. Stroll along the waterfront from here, up to the Mercado de Mariscos, the traditional fish market, which is always crammed with fresh seafood. This is a great place to sample Baja’s legendary fish tacos – said to have been invented in Ensenada. Wine lovers should check out the Bodegas de Santo Tomás , one of Baja California’s largest and oldest wineries – it’s also easy to arrange tours of the nearby Valle de Guadalupe, Mexico’s up-and-coming wine region. And don’t forget Hussong’s Cantina – this spit-and-sawdust bar was established way back in 1892 by German immigrant Johann Hussong and is one of several spots to claim the invention of the margarita. Whale-watching tours (from mid-December to mid-April), to view the grey whale migration, are easily arranged from the harbor – contact Sergio’s Sportfishing Center in advance.

What are the restaurants in Ensenada like?

Restaurants are pretty good, though street food is where Ensenada really excels. This is the home of the fish taco, and numerous places complete for the title of “best in Baja” beginning with venerable stall Tacos Fenix (Espinosa at Juárez). There’s also La Guerrerense , a food stall beloved of the late Anthony Bourdain that serves fresh shellfish tostadas and ceviche. Bronco’s is the place for steak, while Chef Benito Molina’s Manzanilla Restaurante is our favorite place for gourmet Mexican seafood. Cervecería Wendlandt is the best of a growing number of Baja craft breweries.

souvenir vendors

Is Ensenada expensive?

Ensendada is not really expensive. Everything is relative of course, but hotels in Ensenada – especially inland from the seafront – tend to be reasonably priced, and public transport and the city’s famous street food is very cheap – almost everything is priced in pesos, not US dollars, though services targeted specifically at cruise ship passengers always cost more.

Is Ensenada safe?

Yes. Ensenada has generally avoided the drug violence that has affected other parts of Mexico. Take the usual precautions, especially at night, and keep valuables in room safes. Theft of personal items from beaches does happen – never leave anything of value unattended, even on seemingly empty stretches of sand.

Although not a huge city, Ensenada is distinguished by its cosmopolitanism, evidenced by its museums and cultural institutions, theaters, and art galleries.

The Pérez Meillón Gallery was founded in 1988 by siblings Adalberto and Patricia Pérez Meillón, who began with a store selling high-quality handicrafts (Tarahumara pieces, Pai Pai pottery, and Kumiai basketry), and today it offers wide range of works by local and national artists.

Have a Margarita at Hussong’s Cantina

ensenada baja california mexico

Although several places in Baja California dispute the creation of the famous Margarita cocktail , the most widely accepted version is that it was the work of Carlos Orozco, bartender at Cantina Hussong’s, located at 113 Ruiz Avenue in Ensenada.

Don Carlos liked to experiment and offered the novel cocktail to Margarita Henkel , daughter of the German ambassador, who lived in the city.

The client liked the invention, and the drink took her name.

12 Top-Rated Things to Do in Ensenada

Written by Meagan Drillinger Updated Jan 20, 2023

Author Meagan Drillinger visits Mexico several times a year. She most recently visited Ensenada on an extended trip through Baja in September 2022.

Seventy miles south of the California border sits a quiet fishing-village-turned-cruise-port and surf haven . Ensenada, a small town on the coast of Baja Norte , is one of the most iconic beach towns in Mexico.

The quirky coastal city is a mishmash of day trippers in port on a cruise call, Californians passing through for a weekend of surf, local fishermen and craftsmen, musicians, and domestic visitors from the mainland. As such, it's a fairly international spot for such a small town. You'll find everything from traditional tacos to haute French fare, tacky T-shirts to Indigenous handicrafts.

Sign in Ensenada

Among the top things to do in Ensenada are to stroll the streets to soak up the effervescent atmosphere, from live Mariachi music to cacophonous taco stalls, dancing fountains and natural geysers, epic waves, and brightly colored souvenir stands. Don't miss one of the world's largest flags — though at 164 feet by 91 feet, to miss it would be impossible.

A bit outside of Ensenada proper, many locals and visitors love to break a sweat in the extreme sports scenes, from skydiving and ATV rides to surfing and snorkeling.

Ensenada is very much on the tourist trail but still manages to retain its small-town charm. Plan your sightseeing with our list of the top things to do in Ensenada.

1. Stroll Avenida Lopez Mateos

2. discover the museo de historia, 3. catch the water show at parque de la bandera, 4. wander plaza civica, 5. mount a steed at rancho los bandidos, 6. visit la bufadora, 7. hike el salto canyon, 8. pop up to rosarito, 9. dive into extreme sports, 10. browse the malecon, 11. explore cañon de doña petra ecological park, 12. caracol museo de ciencias, map of ensenada - best things to do.

Avenida Lopez Mateos

When you first arrive in Ensenada, especially if it's on a cruise ship, the first thing you're going to hear about is Avenida Lopez Mateos. Also known as Calle Primera , the four blocks of this avenue between Calle Castillo and Avenida Riveroll are primetime for shopping and soaking up the tourist vibe.

Flanked on either end with everything from leather and silver shops to restaurants and hotels, this is the heart of the action in Ensenada . Whether you're sipping on a latte and snacking on delicious seafood, or buying a poncho and embroidered textiles, Avenida Lopez Mateos has a shop to please.

Pedestrian bridge leading to downtown Ensenada from the cruise ship port

Hotels are abundant here, from the Bahia and villa Fontana Inn to Hotel Villa Marina and Hotel Mision Santa Isabel. By afternoon, the air is filled with the sounds of Mariachi music that waft out onto the avenue from the bustling restaurants.

Located in the port area, it's close to the heart of downtown and the perfect jumping-off point from which to dive into the more local sides of Ensenada.

History Museum of Ensenada

To fully understand the story of Ensenada, it's best to start at the beginning. That's why it's worth a trip to the History Museum of Ensenada. This is the best place for a comprehensive look into the history of the region, from pre-Hispanic times through the Spanish Colonial conquest and up to the present.

Through artifacts like beads and pots to historic photographs and modern-day gardens, the history of Ensenada comes to life. What's even more interesting is that the museum is housed within the Rivera del Pacifico building, which used to be a lavish casino in the early 20th century during Prohibition.

Not only is it an architectural marvel, but its walls tell the stories of visiting celebrities like Lucy and Desi Arnez, as well as seedy characters like Al Capone. Not only are the exhibits of the museum interesting, but the murals, paintings, and stunning ceilings of the building are works of art in themselves.

Dancing fountains in Ensenada

Ensenada is home to a small, but vibrant, malecon (sea wall) that runs along the water's edge. While strolling the malecon, be sure to stop by El Parque de la Bandera. Translated as the Park of the Flag, you'll recognize this park by none other than its towering flagpole. Some say the massive Mexican flag that towers over the park is the largest in Mexico, and it will be very easy to see why.

Within the park is a small playground and a bandshell that often hosts live music. But the most exciting part of the park are the dancing fountains . Every evening from 8pm, the fountains spring to life, putting on a live water show synched to music and splashed with festive lighting. If you've ever been to The Bellagio in Las Vegas, you know the hypnotizing power of a dancing water show set to a soundtrack.

It's a wonderful time of night when locals and tourists pause together to watch the energetic musical display.

Plaza Civica

In the heart of Ensenada is Plaza Civica, the town's main square . A stroll through this central plaza will shed light on some of Mexico's important historical events. The park is known locally as "Three Heads Park" because of the three giant golden busts of figures from Mexico's history. Take a look at the busts of some of the country's more notable figures, like Benito Juarez, Miguel Hidalgo, and Venustiano Carranza. To know more about who each one was, take a look at the plaques on each bust.

But more than history, the plaza affords lovely ocean views , which make for great photo ops, as well. Plaza Civica is lined with vendors who are selling everything from street food and crafts to jewelry and books.

One of the most popular things to do in Ensenada is to head over to Rancho Los Bandidos for a trail ride . The ranch is an actual working ranch in the foothills of the Sierra San Pedro Martir mountains. It's a true trip back in time to the Wild West days of Baja California. Riders are paired with horses that match their skills, which makes it safe and a relaxing adventure for the day. After the safety briefing, riders mount their houses and head off into the hills.

The trail winds to the San Miguel Hills, which open to stunning views over Ensenada, including the coastline, Salsipuedes Bay, Ensenada Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. After the trail ride, guests head back to the ranch for chips and salsa, tacos, and snacks.

This activity is popular with cruisers who can arrange for shore excursions, but anyone is welcome to the ranch for a ride. The entire excursion lasts about two hours, and Rancho Los Bandidos is about 20 minutes from the cruise terminal.

La Bufadora

If you didn't get your fix of dancing water from El Parque de la Bandera, perhaps La Bufadora will be fully satisfying. The area of Mexico on which Ensenada sits is known for its geological strata that includes one of the largest blowholes in North America .

La Bufadora is caused from the ocean waves that push air and water through a very narrow passage in the rocks. That said, the legend says that the Bufadora is the result of a whale that was once wedged between the rocks. Over the years the whale turned to stone and has been lodged ever since. Whichever version you choose to believe, the result is one of the largest marine geysers in the world.

A path to La Bufadora takes visitors from the parking lot to the viewpoint. It's a bit of a drive on highway 1, south from Ensenada. On the way, you'll pass flea markets and a few tourist stalls.

Be prepared to get wet. The waves can blast water more than 100 feet into the air, so it's not uncommon for viewers to get drenched in the process.

El Salto Canyon

Lace up your hiking boots and get wild in the raw, unspoiled nature of the Baja peninsula. Hit the trails in El Salto Canyon.

The steep, black-rock canyon slices through the Guadalupe Valley, offering dramatic terrain with steep walls, dark crevices, and snaking trails. The best way to experience the canyon is to hire the expertise of a guide, who can point out the kingbirds and red-tailed hawks that circle the sky.

The El Salto Canyon Trail is a 4.9-mile loop, and is not for the faint of heart. The trail is frequented by rock climbers and experienced hikers. In fact, much of the trail is unmarked, and bouldering is required.

But those with the know-how and stamina are rewarded with absolutely breathtaking views and a waterfall along the way. In the rainy season, the waterfall gushes more than 100 feet. Note that the trail and canyon are also pet-friendly, should you be traveling with your trusty dog sidekick.

Beach in Rosarito

While you're in Ensenada, you may want to pop over to one of Mexico's other best-known beach towns, Rosarito . Once upon a time, Rosarito was a getaway for the Hollywood A-listers, who would cross the border to escape Prohibition in the United States.

About an hour up the coast, Rosarito is today known for its explosive sunsets, wildlife, spas, and some of the best beaches on the Baja California Peninsula . In fact, Rosarito Beach has been a surfer's mecca for decades.

Even if you're not a surfer, the beaches are known for their ATV tours, snorkeling, fish tacos , and sun worshippers.

The town is also heralded for its extreme sports , from hiking and dirt biking to motorcycles and jet skiing. Head out to Los Coronados, a string of rocks that have become a habitat for wildlife, and a prime place to visit for snorkelers and scuba divers.

Rosarito is an artisan haven , too, from the Local Artisan Market to Plaza Pabellon's galleries, restaurants, and coffee shops. You may even opt to spend the night at one of the many hotel options that line the beaches in Rosarito.

Surf lessons in Ensenada

Baja California's rugged terrain, unspoiled beaches, and pounding surf have made it a paradise for adventure lovers for many years. Ensenada is no different and, in fact, it's one of the best places to visit in Mexico for extreme sports.

S urfing is the main attraction, which is the official/unofficial sport of the Baja peninsula and has been for nearly a century. In fact, the first surf contest in Baja, the Baja Surf Club International, was held here in the 1960s. Today it's one of the most popular surf towns in Mexico , which means it can get a little crowded on weekends and in the summer. Fall is the optimal time for surfing, in terms of weather and crowds.

But visitors to Ensenada can do much more than surf. ATV rentals are popular for cruising around the sandy beaches. You can book an ATV tour or rent by the hour. Visitors also love to skydive, kayak, snorkel , or even charter sport fishing day trips out to sea. Keep your eyes peeled for whales!

Tour operators in Ensenada offer parachuting, tandem jumps, and skydiving courses for the ultimate in free-fall adventures.

Malecon in Ensenada

Most port cities in Mexico have paved sea paths that hug their coastlines. These sea paths are known colloquially as "malecones," and they are often thriving centers of activity for both locals and visitors. The malecon in Ensenada is no exception.

A stroll along this bustling sea path takes you past vibrant outdoor booths hawking souvenirs , fish markets, taco stands, and live music - all with spectacular views of the wild and rugged Pacific coast. Stroll past Plaza Civica for a look at the historic busts before heading into the open market, where you'll see local fishermen selling their day's catch. The other end of the market has a string of restaurants where the food is about as fresh as it can be.

The best time to stroll the malecon is at sunset , when you'll have uninterrupted views of the magnetic colors. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the massive flagpole that stands more than 300 feet tall.

Cañon de Doña Petra Ecological Park

Sweeping mountain scenery is what brings people to discover the beauty of Cañon de Doña Petra Ecological Park, located in a quiet area near Ensenada. Locals and tourists come for the hiking trails, the ocean views, and the wildlife .

The park can be as high-intensity or as peaceful as you want. Miles of hiking and mountain biking trails weave in and out of the landscape. But the park also has plenty of spots to curl up with a good book or sprawl out on a picnic blanket.

One of the more unique features of the park is a statue of the Buddhist Princess Tara , which was donated by the people of Nepal to the park. It's a bit of cross-culture in a tiny corner of the world, which is a nice thing to witness.

A visit to a beach town may not seem like a top spot for a museum of science , but here is another area where Ensenada shines. The Caracol Museo de Ciencias is a beautiful and modern facility that sits between the harbor and the Riviera Center. It is an institution for science and engineering projects and a great place to learn about Mexico's contributions and endeavors in the field.

It's also a place to learn about scientific history. The museum has three permanent exhibitions , dedicated to marine life, terrestrial life, and space. The museum opened in its current location in 2015, and visitors can participate in workshops and classes, as well.

The Mexican port city of Ensenada, located in the heart of Baja California, has long been a popular choice for travellers who prefer to bypass Tijuana and enjoy an alternative town close to the USA border. While the majority of visitors who spend one day in Ensenada arrive via a cruise ship, it is also entirely possible to experience this Mexican city as an independent traveller, even if you choose to travel to Ensenada by bus and don’t have your own car.

Having spent three days here on our recent trip to the Mexican city, we found that were plenty of things to do in Ensenada and a number of fantastic places to eat with the highlights possible to enjoy even if you only have one day to spend in this lovely coastal town.

Table of Contents

How to Spend One Day in Ensenada

1. start your day with fish tacos and coffee.

Chances are if you’re coming all the way to Ensenada, then one of the things that draws you here is the amazing food on offer. Therefore, there’s no point in wasting any time: start your day with a fish taco!

While some taco stands tend to open mid-morning there are plenty of great options if you want an early breakfast or have arrived in early on a cruise ship.

One of the best places for fish tacos is Tacos Fenix  – a small, unassuming cart located about a ten-minute walk from the harbour area that makes some of the best street food in Ensenada. They serve freshly made fish and shrimp tacos for 18 pesos each and have a wide range of salsas and fixings to doctor up your tacos.

As with nearly all taco stands that we visited during our time in Ensenada, simply order what you want, take a seat at the bar or stand while eating and pay once you’re finished.

If you want somewhere to eat breakfast closer to the harbour then another great option is  Tacos y Mariscos Alan . The owner here speaks basic English and you can get some delicious fish tacos as well as other breakfast options such as pozole soup and other local favourites.

If the salsas from the fish tacos haven’t quite woken you up then make sure to head to Cafe Kaffa  for your morning coffee. They have a range of drip coffee and espresso options and claim to be the first coffee shop of its kind in Ensenada. The regulars that we saw here over our repeat visits only further validate the quality of coffee here!

2. Explore the harbour area

Whether you’re arriving by cruise ship or exploring Ensenada independently, it’s worth spending the morning in Ensenada exploring the harbour area.

If you’ve had your morning coffee at Cafe Kaffa, you can walk down to the harbour and then walk across the esplanade, enjoying the ocean on one side and plenty of stalls to explore on the other.

One of our favourite stalls was Luci’s stand, located in the small congregation of stalls near the giant Mexican flag. She serves a wide range of drinks (as well as tamales) that are perfect as the temperature starts increasing in the morning.

There are plenty of benches along the harbour where you can stop for a short rest to people-watch or enjoy the ocean view. It’s also worth walking down to the Mercado Negro – a local seafood market where fisherman sell their daily catch.

It’s interesting to see all the different types of fish on offer and while there are a number of restaurants nearby they tend to be more geared towards tourists rather than locals.

3. Eat delicious ceviche for lunch

While Ensenada is best known for fish tacos, you can’t visit the city without trying some of the delicious ceviche tostadas on offer! The place to go is undoubtedly La Guerrerense  – a small food cart that was originally started in 1960 and has grown in fame over the years due to famous chefs visiting such as the late Anthony Bourdain and being featured in international newspapers.  They even have a large sign outside their stall highlighting all the famous people that have visited!

The menu here is simple and absolutely delicious. They offer a wide range of basic ceviches such as shrimp, octopus, scallops and mixed fish and serve it on top of a tostada with a couple of slices of avocado. There are then a wide range of their homemade salsas that you can add to your tostada – if you’re not sure which one to get the friendly staff will undoubtedly try to help!

Due to their growing popularity, they have also opened a restaurant across the street where you can also enjoy all their famous dishes. Both the cart and the restaurant are located only a few minutes’ walk from the harbour and is undoubtedly some of the best street food in Ensenada.

4. Enjoy wine or (and) tequila tastings

If you only have one day in Ensenada then you might not have enough time to go out to the wineries located in Valle de Guadalupe – the famous nearby wine region.

Luckily, you can still sample some Mexican wines by visiting the  Bodega de Santo Tomas which is located only a short ten to fifteen-minute walk from the harbour. Santo Tomas is one of the oldest wineries in Mexico, having been founded in 1880 when wine had previously only typically been produced by churches.

While there are no native grapes to Mexico, wine has been produced in the region since the 17th century with grapes being bought over from Europe.

You can enjoy a tasting at Santo Tomas that includes a few of their different wines with generous pours! They also produce their own olive oil and chocolate which they also offer to sample.

The people that worked here spoke English and were able to provide a lot of detailed information about the wines which makes this a great experience for wine enthusiasts! You can also purchase any of the wines you try but there is certainly no pressure to do so.

Wine Tasting at Santo Tomas in Ensenada

If the wine tastings weren’t enough or you prefer to sample a different type of drink, then head to the Tequila Room located in the heart of Ensenada. They are extremely passionate about their tequilas and mescals here and source unique brands and bottles from all over Mexico.

They offer tip-based tastings at the store and we were able to sample 8 different tequilas and mezcals with different ages as well as learn a lot more about the production process.

The Tequila Room is definitely a great place to develop a new level of appreciation for the drink as the quality you taste here is a lot better than the typical tequila brands you buy outside of Mexico.

5. Dinner at a local restaurant

One of the surprising elements of our trip to Ensenada was that many of the street stalls close fairly early in the evening so if you’re after an evening meal you should head to a local restaurant instead.

We had a great meal at Tacos Maru  which is a local home-style restaurant serving all types of traditional Mexican food. They do get quite busy in the evening so you might have to wait for a table however service is very quick and they give you menus and take orders while you’re waiting to speed up the process. If you’re unsure what to order then I recommend one of the combination plates that each give you different numbers of burritos, tostadas, flautas  and enchiladas.

If you’re insistent on eating at a street stall then I recommend you have an early dinner and heading to Juarez Avenue (5th Street) where there are more local options that stay open for longer compared to those near the harbour. Los Originales Fish Tacos on the corner of Gastelum Avenue & Juarez was one of our favourite stalls on that street!

Once you’re done with dinner, Alta Baja Cervecería  is a great place for a nightcap to finish off your day in Ensenada. They have a great list of craft beer, both local and imported, which can be enjoyed on an outdoor terrace while overlooking Ensenada.

Is an Ensenada Day Trip from San Diego Worth It?

Ensenada’s close proximity to the US border lends travellers to consider taking an Ensenada day trip from San Diego. While this is technically possible to do, it will result in a very long travel day, particularly as you risk getting delayed at the border coming back to the USA.

If you choose to travel from San Diego to Ensenada by public transport then expect about 2.5 to 3 hours of travel time each way. Driving time between the two cities is only about 2 hours but delays are very common coming back into the USA.

There is plenty to do and places to stay in Ensenada and I, therefore, recommend visitors at least spend one night in the city rather than taking an Ensenada day trip from San Diego.

Why you should spend more than one day in Ensenada

While it’s possible to see the highlights of Ensenada within one day, there are a number of reasons why you should consider extending your trip and spending at least two or three days in Ensenada.

1. Day trips from Ensenada

Ensenada is a great base to explore some of the region’s nearby attractions which can be difficult to go to if you only have one day in the city.

One of the most popular day trips is to visit Valle de Guadalupe – a region that has been described as the Napa Valley of Mexico. You can spend an entire day here, sampling delicious wine from different wineries, enjoying the scenic countryside and stopping for a gastronomical lunch.

Another option is to head to the beach town of Puerto Nuevo which is known for its delicious and affordable lobsters. This can also be a great lunch stop if travelling back to San Diego in the morning rather than evening.

Finally, arguably the most popular day trip in the region is La Bufadora – a large geyser that shoots water into the air approximately every minute. This is a fairly touristy spot so I recommend trying to get there early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

2. Eat more great food

One of the best things about spending three days in Ensenada was the fact that we were able to sample so much great food in the city! Some of the other best street food we ate not mentioned in our itinerary include:

Tacos Don Zefe – Best known for their fish tacos but you can also get enchiladas, burritos and tostadas. They have table seating as well as a bar to eat at if you’re in a rush. Make sure to try their calamari taco which is difficult to find at other taco stalls.

240 Grill  – A great place to try traditional Baja dishes with an innovative twist. They have a small menu but some of their staff speak English and are very willing to help you decide what to eat! The octopus taco is sensational!

Tacos Nemo – A small cart located close to the ABC bus station. Traditional fish tacos some of the most affordable you’ll find in Ensenada!

Fish tacos in Ensenada

3. Plenty of affordable accommodation

Another great reason to spend more than one day in Ensenada is that there is plenty of affordable accommodation to choose from, irrespective of the type of traveller you are! Some of the best places to stay in Ensenada are:

Hotel Cortez – a fantastic mid-range boutique hotel that is located 5 minutes walk from the harbour. They have lovely clean and air-conditioned rooms as well as a gym and swimming pool at the hotel. Click here to see their latest prices

Hotel Posada El Rey Sol – Located in the centre of town but also within walking distance of the beach, this hotel offers modern rooms suitable for couples. Click here to see their latest prices.

Ensenada is a fantastic town to visit as either a short trip from San Diego or as part of a longer itinerary through Mexico. There are plenty of interesting things to do and fantastic places to eat that will ensure you will have a memorable trip.

9 Best Things To Do In Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico

Post author avatar

Mexico is full of many diversified and colorful places that just happen to catch your eye no matter where you’re heading to in the country. Back in March of this year, my parents and I had embarked on a cruise where one of the destinations was Mexico, specifically in the state of Baja California and the city is called Ensenada.

Ensenada is a bit of an underrated coastal destination but with cruises making it a destination stop, it’s getting more and more noticed. Though Ensenada is a safe and affordable area to stop by and explore when you’re on a budget. It’s just less than 2 hours away from San Diego, so a drive off of there wouldn’t be bad. Ensenada , a small coastal city in Baja California, is a great introduction to the culture and for a beginner of Mexico. And just like the English meaning of ‘ensenada’ translating to a ‘small coastal inlet’ or ‘cove’, there’s no better word to name and describe this city.

I was greeted with the views that sunny morning I woke up when the cruise docked right into Mexico, I was captivated by Ensenada’s buildings stacked up by another on the grassy hills and the many sailboats docked. The city is actually a port for fishing, important commercial, and it handles farms that grow vegetables and flowers. I was then curious, “what would be there to explore in this city?” It surprised me, especially not knowing a certain thing or doing very minimal research beforehand. We decided to join a tour guide and allow her to present us with things to explore the Ensenada experience.

Here are 9 things to do when you travel to Ensenada:

1. Wine tasting

If you’re a wine lover or just want to taste the local wine of every vineyard you can find in your travels, then you can experience it right here in Ensenada. There are many wineries to stop by in Ensenada and they will all offer the divine taste created in the city as it is considered the wine capital. The one we stopped by was bought to us by the Ensenada Travels Tours we took. From here, you can witness amazing green lush mountains and vineyards in the backdrop and feel at peace there sipping away from their varying selection of wine.

With $5 per a nicely poured wine glass, you can choose from sweet-dry to very dry and be pleasantly surprised by how smooth they go down.

2. Visit PaiPai Ecotourism.

If around the corner of the winery I just listed isn’t more of your scene, the PaiPai Ecotourism attraction is connected right to it. PaiPai is a conservation organization that houses exotic animals for rehabilitation such as big cat cubs that is sick or have been abandoned by their moms.

The duties of ecotourisms are to conserve the environment and the well-being of people and animals. Knowing that your admission fees or extra fees to have an up-close and personal encounter with these exotic animals goes to giving the necessary care for these animals and towards education programs gives you the hope to join in. I’ve never heard or seen of lemurs until I took that personal encounter to pet and feed them and they seemed very friendly.

3. Visit La Bufadora, one of the only 3 blowholes in the world.

La Bufadora, located on the Punta Bunda Peninsula, is one of Ensenada’s top attractions besides its wine country. It is one of the only 3 blowholes in the world besides the one in Hawaii and Australia and it places 2nd place for being the biggest. What exactly is a blowhole? It is basically a marine geyser that shoots up ocean water from the pressure of waves under a sea cave.

Looking at the blowhole erupt from the sea was a fun experience as you can hear the waves rumbling and gathering to shoot up the water. Quite violent but majestic to witness. It can shoot up to 100 feet high above sea level and it repeats so many times in just a minute interval. But, don’t expect an Old Faithful with this one.

I should also note the drive here is also very scenic as you’re driving up a higher elevation, getting an epic aerial view of the sea where its blue reflects blends in and seemingly disappears with the sky and mountains from afar.

4. Walk the flea market leading to La Bufadora.

Before you enter into the tourist stop of La Bufadora, there is a long-walked flea market leading to there. This is actually a great way to boost tourism sales for all these local vendors. You can find hand-crafted artisan products, Mexican attire, toys, Ensenada souvenirs ranging from shirts to magnets, knock-off designer bags that are so identical to the real ones… there is pretty much something there for everyone. The best part: there is plenty of all freshly cooked food and drinks to be found here — which I will get to right after.

5. Try authentic tacos and the highly recommended smoked clams.

I highly believe the authentic Mexican tacos are the best type of tacos to exist in the world and I was even more excited to try them in its originating country. Through the flea market, I stopped by a food vendor and ordered myself some chicken and shrimp tacos. It was everything I hoped for and you can choose whichever you’d like to put on them as toppings or you can sit back and relax and let them do whatever. You can also watch them prepare and grill them right in front of you.

I don’t know about you, but my family and I are big into seafood. (Filipinos, go figure!) When our tour guide and other locals suggested trying the smoked clams, we were all in. It looked so appetizing the second my eyes landed on these smoked clams and one whiff of them and your stomach will thank you once you order some. This regional dish is grilled in front of you as well and for $8 for two smoked clams, you cannot go wrong.

6. Try the pina colada and margaritas.

Mexico loves its alcohol. The pina colada is the tastiest out here in Ensenada than ones I’ve tried here in America and so are the margaritas! These tropical drinks will give you that great buzz to feeling good exploring the city and it’s the perfect combination by the shore. With fresh pineapple juice used and with so many samples given and stacked as you walk the flea market, it’ll be hard for you to resist a taste.

7. Try varieties of tequila.

Tequila is quintessential in Mexico… and Ensenada! If you want the real deal, you can find it in this city. There are so many varieties of tequila I can guarantee you haven’t tried outside of the states (if you’re from there, that is). Ever heard of coffee tequila? It tastes just like coffee and you wouldn’t think they’re a good combination til you try it! Or have you tried mango tequila? It’s so good! There was also pink colored tequila to try! (One is called “The Heartbreaker” but it’s unbeknownst to me what the flavor is.)The sampling of tequila is a great experience you have to try if you’re a spirit junkie. If you like those flavors of tequila so much, you can take a whole bottle home as a souvenir for you and your friends and family to share with.

8. Take home a hand-woven Mexican blanket.

Oh my goodness, the Mexican blanket is probably the king of all blankets. They’re also known in their other several names like sarape, serape, or jorongo. It’s the warmest kind of blanket I’ve ever owned or had around me. I have used this blanket twice camping and I can assure that they have withstood harsh cold weathers to keep me from shivering and they’re also cuddle-approved! Not that I cuddled with anything or anyone with it yet… but I know it is. 😉

You can find so many hand-woven Mexican blankets created by skilled artisans here in shops and they’re created in vibrant different colors and striped patterns with usually fringed ends. They’re made from a loom and typically made 50% cotton and 50% acrylic.

9. Admire the shore and the mountains.

Ensenada is bordered by the Pacific Ocean, specifically in the coastline of Bahia de Todos Santos, an inlet of the ocean that serves as the busy Port of Ensenada. As mentioned, the sea is imperative to Ensenada and the maritime industry since it has produced commercially fished seafood to import such as the tuna you can taste right off Japanese markets along with shrimp, sardines, and mackerel, to name a few. Its fishing is considered serious business to the city and it is the only deep-water port in Baja California.

The sea is heavenly blue that is only good to swim in for certain months of the year but shore activities like kayaking can be done there anytime. The city is surrounded by small mountain ranges that actually have trails for hiking and horse riding. The landscapes make for a good destination that fulfills you with Mexico’s nature and family-friendly bonding in Ensenada.

In Ensenada, you can never find a low supply of food to fulfill you at any time of the day. You can always find something to do as a family and there are plenty of markets to stop by and shop in. Ensenada cherishes and takes great pride in what they offer.

Love this! We have thought about doing a cruise that goes to Ensenada, so it’s great to read about the things to do there. I had no idea about the blow hole! That’s awesome!

Thank you Leah! I hope you get to try that cruise one day over there. The city is quite an underrated yet refreshing visit. I wished I had more time to kayak there or explore the mountains and I recommend those too. The blowhole was interesting.

Did you drive there gaby?

Hi Vanessa, no I didn’t drive there. It was a stop for one of the cruises I took from California. You can, however, drive there from San Diego, California as I believe it’s only 2 hours apart.

10 Epic Things to Do in Ensenada Mexico: A 2023 Travel Guide

Sharing is caring!

Ensenada Mexico is one of the most popular destinations for Americans to travel to in Mexico. And for good reason. There are so many awesome things to do in Ensenada (and so many awesome things to eat, too!).

If you’re wondering what to do in Ensenada Mexico, you’ve come to the right place.

It’s a pretty small city not far from the US border and less than two hours from Tijuana , but it’s a world away when it comes to luxury, views, and all the wine.

There are tons of fun things to do in Ensenada whether you want an action-packed trip or a laid-back vacation.

But first, I would highly recommend having access to a car on your trip to Ensenada. While the town itself is completely walkable, several of the best things to do in Ensenada require a vehicle.

You can rent a car in Tijuana , which is relatively easy to do from the airport.

You can also take your own car across the border and drive in Mexico that way (just be sure you have the right insurance). What I do not recommend is driving a US rental car across the border to Mexico.

This ends up costing quite a bit more than if you just grab an Uber to the border, walk across, and then rent a car once you are in Mexico.

Alternatively, you can take a few tours to some of the below-listed places. I’ll mention my preferred tour companies for each below.

Where to Stay in Ensenada Mexico

There are so many great places to stay in Ensenada Mexico. It depends whether you want to stay in the downtown area or up around the vineyards, but there’s a little something for everyone.

Airbnb in Ensenada Mexico

We stayed in an amazingly located Airbnb while we were in Ensenada.

If you are traveling as two or more, this place has two bedrooms with comfortable beds. It has a great kitchen if you want to self-cater. The living room was great and had a smart TV in it with Netflix so we could just chill in the evenings when we wanted to.

You can check out that Airbnb here.

Hotels in Ensenada Mexico

  • Torre Lucerna Hotel : This is one of the more luxury-style hotels in Ensenada, but it’s still incredibly affordable. The rooms are modern and comfortable and there is plenty of parking, which tends to be a problem with other hotels in the area. There’s an outdoor pool to enjoy during the warmer months and it’s within walking distance of all the best restaurants in Ensenada . Rooms start at $120 per night. Book a stay at Torre Lucerna Hotel here .
  • Hotel Las Dunas : Hotel las Dunas is one of the better budget options in Ensenada. If you want a cheap and cheerful room with parking and close to all the action, this is a great option. It doesn’t have tons of amenities, but it’s clean and well priced. Rooms start at $75 per night. Book a stay at Hotel Las Dunas here.
  • Punta Morro : For a real luxury resort, look no further than Punta Morro. Depending on when you plan to visit, rooms here are an absolute steal for the quality. There are several pools, a cliffside view over the ocean, modern rooms, and an indoor spa pool. Rooms start at $175 per night. Book a stay here .

where to stay in Ensenada Mexico when you visit with a pool and palm trees

Hotels in Valle de Guadalupe Mexico

  • Cuatro Lunas Boutique Hotel : These gorgeous cabins line the outside of a peaceful and beautiful pool in what looks like an otherwise flat area. You will get perfect uninterrupted views of the surrounding wine region. Rooms start at $200 USD per night. Book here.
  • La Villa del Valle : La Villa del Valle will make you feel like you’ve stepped into an Italian Villa. The views over the valley don’t get much better and there’s a pool and a hot tub for relaxing after a strenuous day of touring around the valley and Ensenada. Rooms start at $280 USD per night. Book here.
  • Casa Mayoral: Casa Mayoral is made up of studio apartments that look like glamping cabins, but better. It also happens to be on the same property as the Casa Mayoral winery, so you don’t have to travel far to start sampling the best wine in the region. Rooms start at $150 USD per night. Book here.
  • Encuentro Guadalupe : This is without a doubt one of the most popular hotels in Valle de Guadalupe, and for good reason. Encuentro is made up of cabins on the hill that overlook almost the entire valley. There’s a pool, a spa tub, a wine tasting room, a restaurant, and even nice walking trails. Book at least a month in advance, if not more to get a space here. Rooms start at $250 USD per night. Book here.

Things to Do in Ensenada Mexico

There are tons of great things to do in Ensenada. Here’s a quick snapshot.

  • El Guerrerense
  • Night Clubs
  • Local Craft Beer
  • Playa Hermosa
  • La Bufadora
  • Valle de Guadalupe

1. Drink at the Oldest Cantina in Baja California

One of the first things we did when we got to Ensenada was walk over to Hussongs . It’s definitely one of the most well-known bars in the city and you’ll no doubt hear lots of different languages being spoken there.

The number of tourists that visit the Cantina doesn’t seem to put the locals off. It’s by far the busiest bar in the city every night.

We actually rang in the new year here and it was SO much fun. They also sell really big bags of peanuts and you simply throw the shells onto the floor. They sweep them up at the end of every night.

Despite being one of the most popular bars in the city, they still keep their prices down (or perhaps because they’re so busy they  can keep the prices down).

Bottles of beer are incredibly affordable. During the week, they run different deals on cocktails like two-for-one margaritas. Besides peanuts, they also serve some bags of chips, but no other food.

things to do in ensenada

2. Eat at the Best Seafood in Ensenada Mexico

Ensenada has a street stall called El Guerrerense.

For several years in a row, the stall has been named the best street stall in the entire world .

While I have to say, the seafood tostadas are absolutely delicious, it wasn’t the best street food I’ve had in the world. In fact, it isn’t even the best street food I had in Ensenada.

However, it’s still worth a visit. All of their normal ceviche tostadas are only 25 pesos and they are packed with flavor. I particularly loved the mixto ceviche, which has fish, octopus, and clams in it.

Thanks to the popularity of El Guerrerense, lots of different seafood street stalls have cropped up around Ensenada.

Others that I  really loved include El Guerro and Mariscos Yiyo’s which is located in an Oxxo parking lot near Playa Hermosa (seriously, this is the best seafood we had in Ensenada, it’s well worth the drive).

What to do in ensenada

This is the street stall La Guerrerense – I highly recommend the mixto ceviche!

4. Walk Along the Malecon in Ensenada Mexico

The Malecon in Ensenada isn’t exactly the most beautiful Malecon in Mexico (the one in Puerto Vallarta is utterly spectacular). A Malecon is simply a boardwalk that runs along the waterfront.

Ensenada is a port town, so the Malecon runs along the port.

This is where you’ll see the fishing boats and cruise ships sitting side-by-side. The city seems to be doing a lot to revive this area and around sunset, it really comes to life, especially on weekends.

There is a bandstand with live music you can enjoy for free. There’s a musical fountain and it’s nicely lit at night.

This is also where you’ll find tons of cheap and delicious seafood restaurants. At the far end is Mercado Negro – the local fish market.

You can buy it raw to cook at your own place or you can simply go into one of the restaurants. I highly recommend Tacos Lily for delicious Baja style fish tacos. Their shrimp tacos are some of the best I’ve ever had.

what to do in ensenada

5. Dance the Night Away

There are a surprising number of clubs in Ensenada for the size of it. On New Year’s Eve we rang in the night at Hussongs, but after midnight they closed, so we had to look elsewhere to carry on the party.

A few places that have reasonable drinks and great DJ’s were Beer & Wings (very casual), Ryerson 51 (more upscale), and Hendrix Club. Other places that are just nice for a few drinks and nice music are Mango Mango.

6. Sample Some Local Craft Beer

Ensenada has SO many great craft beer spots. I didn’t know before coming to Baja California how many amazing breweries come from Tijuana and Ensenada.

The three best breweries that you’ll find in Ensenada are Transpeninsular, Wendlandt, and Agua Mala. Of the three, Transpeninsular was my favorite bar. It also had a really nice food menu.

However, my favorite beer of these three was Agua Mala. It’s a bit of a drive, about 15 minutes, from the center of Ensenada. If you think you’re going to have a beer you can take an Uber which is available all along the coast between Tijuana and Ensenada.

what to do in ensenada

Enjoy good beer, good wine, AND good seafood in Ensenada – what more could you need?

7. Take a Boat Tour in Ensenada Mexico

One of the biggest things to do if you visit Ensenada during the winter months is to go whale watching. Any time of year there are charter boats available for fishing trips or just general joy rides around the coast.

There are boats all along the Malecon that you can book tickets with.

There are also a few tour companies in the center of town where you can book tours. Alternatively, if you stay at a hotel, the front desk can probably recommend a good place to book with (or they can book it for you directly).

8. Walk Along Playa Hermosa

The beach in Ensenada, much like the Malecon, isn’t the most beautiful beach in Mexico.

The water is dark and the sand is coarse. But for the few days that I spent in Ensenada, even in the blustery January mornings, I loved walking along the beach.

My boyfriend and I would put our jackets and sneakers on and walk from one end to the other.

During low tide the beach is wide and long and you’ll spot plenty of people doing yoga, running, and fishing along the shore.

It’s a nice place on a sunny day and during the summer months, it’s a great place to head for a tan. There are several parking lots along Boulevard Castero. I prefer the spots next to Oxxo so that I can enjoy seafood from Mariscos Yiyo’s.

See the location of Playa Hermosa on Google here .

what to do in ensenada

It’s not warm in Ensenada in January, so don’t pack your bathing suit like I did! But it’s still nice to walk along the beach as long as you dress warmly!

9. Get Sprayed By a Marine Geyser

One of the most popular things to do in Ensenada Mexico is to visit La Bufadora, which translates to Geyser. This isn’t some sort of underwater volcanic landform.

A marine geyser is formed when waves crash into a small space like a cave. When the pressure builds up too much, the cave then shoots the water back out in a big way.

The best times to visit La Bufadora are during high tide, so check the tide tables before visiting.

While I enjoyed La Bufadora, my favorite part was actually the road to the geyser.

It is windy and coastal and the views are just stunning. Even the lookout point that’s next to La Bufadora is breathtaking. So if you can only come during low tide, not to worry, it’s still worth the trip for the views alone.

Visiting La Bufadora is free, but if you drive expect to pay about 50 Pesos for parking (most people also accepted US dollars).

It takes about 45 minutes to drive from downtown Ensenada to the parking area of La Bufadora. Just follow the signs.

If you don’t have a vehicle, you can book a tour like this one which will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the geyser. The tour also includes a visit to a local cantina and a stop at a traditional market where you can sample some delicious Mexican food. Book that tour here .

What to do in Ensenada Mexico

The stunning views from La Bufadora – I couldn’t get over how stunningly blue the water looked from here.

10. Visit Some Wineries in Ensenada Mexico

Of course! One of the main draws to Ensenada Mexico is the neighboring wine region, Valle de Guadalupe. I’ve written an entire article about the best wineries in the region which you can read here:

Valle de Guadalupe Wineries: The Best Wineries in Baja California

It’s very easy to self-drive as long as you have a designated driver.

There are so many fantastic wineries and many are close together so you can do two or three tastings in one short visit. We spent two days exploring the wine region and we barely scratched the surface.

You can opt to actually stay in the wine region rather than in downtown Ensenada. There are tons of stunning hotels in Valle de Guadalupe where you can enjoy views of the vineyards and total and utter solitude.

It just depends on how much you want to drive and what food you are most interested in eating (have I mentioned all of the amazing seafood in downtown Ensenada?)

If you don’t want to rent a car or nobody wants to volunteer to be the designated driver, there are a few great tour options that will pick you up and drop you back off in Ensenada and take you around to several different wineries in Valle de Guadalupe.

This tour option on Get Your Guide includes a visit and tour at four different wineries as well as a driver for the day. You will pay for any tasting you want to do. The tour costs $75 USD per person. Book that tour here .

If you want a tour that includes everything, you’ll want to book this option . As well as stops at several wineries, lunch and dinner are also included. The cost of the tour per person depends on how many people are booking (the more people, the cheaper the individual price). It starts at $320 per person. Learn more about that tour and book it here .

Tips for Visiting Ensenada, Mexico

Planning to visit Ensenada, Mexico? Make sure to read this!

After living in Southern California 15+ years, you bet I have jumped to Baja more times that I can remember.

Blame my Latin blood, my love for food or my devotion to Mexico but I need to stop by Tijuana, Rosarito or Ensenada at least twice a year. I still have to discover, eat and drink a lot!

Today, I want to give you some tips that are going to be useful when planning a visit to Ensenada.

I am providing details on how to stay safe, how to handle money, what to do, what to eat, what to bring and how to move around.

There is a lot to be said about Ensenada.  So, if you have questions, feel free to reach out.

Table of Contents

About Ensenada

Ensenada is located 70 miles from the International Border (1.5 hours), 90 miles from San Diego (2 hours) and 200 miles from Los Angeles (4 hours).  Because of its location, it is an ideal weekend gateway from Southern California.

Ensenada is a quite large port city counting with a wide range of modern amenities.  Its closeness to the sea, fertile valleys and Mexico’s premier wine country, makes it a paradise for those who are looking to expand their culinary horizons.

On a personal level, I keep returning to the city because of its gastronomic scene.  There are always new things to try.

Ensenada has been declared a UNESCO creative city.  Give yourself some time to discover its many faces.

Port of Ensenada, Mexico

Safety in Ensenada, Mexico

I tend not to comment about issues related to safety in Mexico since I do not want to perpetuate the bad reputation some individuals and mediums give to the country.

However, I am going to make an exception since a lot of people do not seem to understand why I visit places like Ensenada.  I keep getting asked if I am not afraid of going or if I have run into dangerous situations.

Let me start by saying that I would never recommend on this site a visit to a place I consider unsafe. I write about places I have visited and know well.  In the case of Ensenada and Baja California, I have been countless time with my husband, friends, and groups. I have been there with people of different ages (babies to 70-years old).

I have enjoyed every single visit and have never felt threatened.  Things would be ok if you follow the proper precautions and are aware of your surroundings.

Follow all Mexican laws.  Don’t do in Mexico what you wouldn’t do at home. Be particularly careful about laws related to underage drinking, drugs, driving under the influence, weapon possession and littering.

The same applies to driving-related laws.  Do not drive over the speed limit, fails to wear a seatbelt or use a cell phone while driving.

If you are stopped by the police, insist on a written citation and ask for details on how to pay the fine.

You may have heard about parts of Mexico where cars are stopped to ask for a kickback.  This is not a common practice in Baja California.

You may encounter military checkpoint along the road or highways.  Follow instructions and cooperate if you are randomly selected for a routinary search.

Fish tostada in Ensenada, Mexico

Police officers and soldier may be carrying rifles or other long weapons.  This seems to disturb some people. Do not worry. This is completely normal.

It is advisable to have cell phone coverage in Mexico.  Many telecommunication companies are including Canada and Mexico in their regular voice and data plans.

If your company does not cover this, check how much it would cost to have coverage for the length of your stay.

An application like Google Maps would be invaluable when navigating the streets.

Make sure you are carrying your passport or passport card before crossing into Mexico.

Make photocopies of all your important documents and have them separate from the actual documents.  It is a good idea to scan your documents and have them on your e-mail inbox (as an extra precaution).

Residents of Baja California are known to have a good dominion of the English language.  However, do not count on people knowing English and do not complain if people do not understand you.

Transportation in Ensenada, Mexico

The best way to reach and move around Ensenada is by car.  This will give you the ability to see the attractions at leisure.

If you are coming from the United States, your auto insurance would not be valid in Mexico.  I recommend getting Mexican car insurance before crossing the border.

You have the option to get insurance at one of the businesses located close to the border.  If you are in the San Diego area, these businesses are located in the town of San Ysidro. I have check rates on the Internet and what you paid near the border is competitive.  You will need your driver’s license and auto registration.

Or, get your paperwork ready online.  You will receive instructions on what to do in the case of an accident.  Most companies require a call to the insurance office from a Mexican line.

The easiest way to reach Ensenada from the International Border is by using the toll highway (Mexico 1-D).  Get prepared to pay $4 – $6 to between Tijuana and Ensenada (dollars and pesos are accepted).

The toll road counts with emergency boxes and a patrol offering free emergency assistance (Green Angels).

From the International Border, it is very straightforward to get on the toll road.  Follow the “Ensenada (Cuota)” signs. You will see signs pointing to the “Ensenada (Libre)” road.  These signs would take you to the free transpeninsular road (but you want to use the toll road).

Avoid driving at night or on unknown/remote areas.  If you find yourself lost, turn back and retrace your steps.

Parking in Ensenada is readily available (there are public and private lots).  If parking on the street, do not block entrances or leave the car on unsafe areas.

People arrive in Ensenada by cruise ship too. If you have a 6 – 8 hours in the city, I recommend venturing into Downtown or taking a tour offered by the ship.  This will give you the opportunity to get a glimpse of what the city has to offer.

The closest international airport is located in Tijuana (2 hours away).

Money in Ensenada, Mexico

If you are traveling with dollars, euros or pounds, you will enjoy a very favorable exchange rate.  Even if things are on your favor, get a good idea of how much you are paying on your currency.

Sometimes, people do not care about learning the exchange rate and making the conversion before buying something.  They end up ripped off because they believe things in Mexico should be “cheap.”

On the same note, do not consume a good or participate in an activity without asking how much it costs.  Again, you are asking to be ripped off.

The main tourist drag in Ensenada is Calle Primera (1st Street) or Calle Lopez Mateos (you will hear both names).  This is the street where bars, clubs, and discos are located.

By default, everything on this street is going to be more expensive.  The further you go from this street, the cheaper things will be. This applies to quality too (with a few exceptions).

Some businesses may try to overcharge you for certain things.  Keep an eye especially on the main tourist drag. Walk around comparing prices. Some good places to shop include Bazaar Casa Ramirez, BajaNorte and Casanegra.

Pelican at Ensenada, Mexico

Consider spending your money on local businesses.  I know you have come to Ensenada to have a good time but you can have a good time and help the local economy.

Dollars are accepted everywhere.  Now, if you pay with dollars, you will receive the change in pesos.  Once again, you need to be aware of the current exchange rate to make sure you are being given the correct amount of money.  The exchange rate on the street is a bit lower than the official exchange rate.

It is a good idea to have some pesos at hand.  I have found that I get a better exchange rate in the United States (in the change houses near the border).

Change houses on Mexico may want to charge large commissions for exchanging money.  I have found big supermarkets (Walmart, Comercial Mexicana, Soriana) offer good exchange rates.

Another option to get pesos is to use an ATM.  Be aware that banks in Mexico charge a fee to withdraw money. I have seen fees ranging from 20-90 pesos.

Credit cards are widely accepted in Ensenada.  I try to use my no-fee credit card as much as possible (since it gives me the best exchange rate).

Using the Restroom in Ensenada

The cleanliness of restrooms in Ensenada varies a lot.  You can run into a perfectly clean toilet or into a real nightmare when you need to go the most.

If you remember one thing from this article, remember this: bring toilet paper.  I mean, I am not talking about carrying a roll around on your purse but you need to have a bit of paper (or napkins) for an emergency.

If you worry about germs, bring a small bottle of hand sanitizer too.

There are not a lot of public restrooms around.  If you find one, you would probably have to pay a small amount to go in (like in Europe). However, you are guaranteed a clean place under these circumstances.

If you do not find a public restroom, you can try the old trick of going at a McDonalds or Starbucks.  This is a good deal even if you have to buy something.

Be aware since sometimes individual stalls at malls or supermarkets do not have toilet paper.  There is a big roll outside the stalls and you have to take the paper before going in.

Attractions in Ensenada, Mexico

A lot of people head to Calle Primera or Calle Lopez Mateos when in Ensenada.  I am not the biggest fan of this place. It is fine to walk around, take a look and move on.

I encourage visitors to check the malecon (sea walk), the Mercado Negro (fish market), Los Globos (traditional market), Riviera Cultural Center, the Caracol Museum of Science and Ventana al Mar (big plaza with an interactive fountain).

Going to La Bufadora, a sea geyser located in Punta Banda, is a classic in Ensenada.  Some people consider this overrated but the views along the drive are beautiful. You can also see La Bufadora or the peninsula cliffs from a small boat or kayak.

Punta Banda is also home of the Oceanic Aquarium .

And, talking about boats, you can go on a whale watching excursion from December to April from Ensenada’s port (excursions start behind the Mercado Negro).

Harbor cruises and sportfishing excursions are available year-round.  In addition, you can arrange trips to Todos Santos Islands and Guadalupe Island (for cage shark diving).

Punta Banda Views in Ensenada, Tips for Visiting Ensenada, Mexico

Wine lovers rejoice since Ensenada is located less than 30 miles from the Guadalupe Valley vineyards and tasting rooms.  You can take a tour or make your own arrangements.  Once again, itis very straightforward to reach the road connecting the coast to the valley (from Mexico-1, you have to take Mexico-3).

The main road crossing the valley is paved but most of the streets connecting to the wineries are not.  It is recommended to drive around with a high clearance vehicle.

South of Ensenada, you will find the Santo Tomas Valley and the San Vicente Valley .  These areas provide a less-crowded, more intimate wine tasting environment.

Golf lovers can head to Bajamar Ocean Front Resort or Baja Country Club to play a round or two.

Those in search of adventure need to visit Las Canadas , a park offering campsites, cabins, ATV rentals, horseback rides, pools, pedal boats on their own lake, canopy tours and suspension bridges.

You can buy a day pass, a camping spot or a combination ticket.

Another ziplining opportunity can be found at Cuatro Cuatros , a complex located north of Downtown Ensenada.  This activity is targeted towards couples or groups (composed of adults).

Food in Ensenada, Mexico

Your first stop in Ensenada should be La Guerrerense , a food cart serving seafood tostadas and cocktails.  They have gained international fame since they have represented Mexico in places such as Hong Kong and have been featured in numerous TV shows (Anthony Boudain was blown away by the food).

I recommend getting their specialties such as codfish, sea urchin, sea cucumber and tuna. You will not find several combinations anywhere else.  Plus, they have about a dozen salsas that you can try (try as many as possible). Do not miss this place because it is delicious!

For seafood cocktails and simple fish ceviche tostadas, I prefer carts like El Guero and Nuestra Senora de Novalato .

For shrimp and fish tacos, go to Tacos Fenix . The tacos are beyond good!

Other taco options include Mariscos El Gordito , Tacos Marco Antonio and Taqueria El Trailero .

To eat seafood in a restaurant setting, you can go to Muelle 3 , La Concheria and La Cevicheria Oyster Bar .

The craft beer scene is thriving in Ensenada.  Experience it by yourself at places like Agua Mala , Wendlandt and Doble C .

The best places to get dessert and pastries include Hogaza Hogaza and Cafe con Leche .

Weather in Ensenada, Mexico

Baja California is known for its good year-round weather.  In theory, you can jump onto the road anytime. In my opinion, spring and fall are the best times to visit.

During daylight saving time (winter), it starts to get dark at around 5:00 p.m.  You will have about 10 hours of daylight for sightseeing.

On the contrary, during summer, you will have more than 14 hours of daylight.  It is important to factor this when deciding on a time to visit.

I recommend bringing a sweater or jacket even if you are visiting the state during summer.  Temperatures can drop, especially close to the beach when the sun goes down.

Accommodations in Ensenada, Mexico

The city counts with many excellent accommodation options.  You will find a city or beach hotel that meet your needs.

Do your own research when looking for hotels.  I have stayed at places recommended by friends and they have ended up being a flub.

If you prefer, you can rent a small apartment using websites such as Airbnb.  I have done this and have ended in places with a kitchen, washing machine, and dryer.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I am sorry you felt this article is offensive. Let me try to clarify some things.

First, I started by narrating some things that I actually saw during one of my visits to Ensenada. I am not saying I personally reacted like that and decided to include it in the article to make a point later. I even wrote the part of the armed soldiers passing by in a sarcastical way (but emotions are not so easily passed on writing). I am not from the United States and have visited countries where the police operate in a similar manner. This is not a problem for me. Thus, I agree some people are better home if they are not willing to deal with the differences.

Second, Ensenada has a good side but it also has a bad side, just like any other city in the world (I don’t think a perfect city exists). Therefore, the initial remarks are not based on facts I made up. It is not my style to talk trash about the places I visit but again, I was trying to make a point.

Third, the entire point of the article is to try to get people to think different about places even though the media insist on giving them a bad reputation. Notice I wrote I elected to see Ensenda in a new light. Also, I wrote, “you should make sure your preconceptions and judgments are not stopping you from discovering what a place is all about.” Therefore, I am inviting my readers to go beyond the preconceived image and try to find the soul of a place. In the particular case of Ensenada, I think many people discard it (like the people on the cruise or many Southern California residents) and they are making a big mistake).

Fourth, I love Ensenada and visit about two times per year (you can see other posts about the city in this blog). I think it is a great destination with lots to offer. There is a big culinary movement in the area and lots of bloggers are writing weekly higlights about the region. I see a bright future for Ensenada (I mention this in the article).

Fifth, I love Mexico and I can’t wait to discover more of it.

Best wishes.

This blog actually confused me at first, and I think Ash is reacting to the way it started just like I originally did. The first two paragraphs make you think that this post was agreeing with the negative perception of Ensenada and that this was going to be more of a “Tourists Beware!” article, when in fact it was the opposite.

Your blog starts with:

“….But there are others nobody wants to visit because of its bad reputation. I am talking about dirty, ungraceful and gritty cities. Places full of tacky souvenirs, harassing vendors and cheap alcohol. Add to those characteristics a dose of nearby kidnaps and murders and you end with every traveler’s worst nightmare. No soul. No culture. No nothing.

Judging for what I experienced the last time I visited Baja California, the city of Ensenada fits the description I provided in the first paragraph. Let me tell you why.”

So after reading the above I assumed you were going to list the reasons why you shouldn’t visit Ensenada. I kept reading your post and realized you were actually arguing the opposite, that Ensenada is not a bad place to visit that there are many great things about this location. You provided very nice pictures and spoke about how people need to put aside their preconceived notions and give this place a try. It was pleasantly surprising!

I am thinking of taking a cruise which has a stop in Ensenada and your blog popped up on Google more information about this place. I’m glad I didn’t skim the post or stop reading after the first paragraphs because it was a relief to read that this place is worth visiting.

Anyway, thank you for sharing about your experience!

I JUST CAME BACK FROM ENSENADA LAST WEEK. IT WAS NICE. YES, THEY SALES PEOPLE ARE VERY AGGRESSIVE BUT IF YOU IGNORE THEM, THEY’LL GO AWAY. THEIR PRICES ARE HIGHER THAN WHAT I REMEMBER THE LAST TIME I CRUISED TO ENSENADA. HONESTLY, I COULD HAVE BOUGHT EVERYTHING I NEEDED IN THE SHOP RIGHT OFF THE SHIP AND GOT BACK ON THE SHIP. THE QUALITY OF SOUVENIRS AND ITEMS IN DOWNTOWN ENSENADA IS SO HORRIBLE. I MEAN, HORRIBLE! OMG! THE WORSE! AND TOO COSTLY. JUST A BUNCH OF JUNK!

Ensenada is a fun beach town in Mexico along the Pacific Coast about 1,5 hours from the U.S.-Mexico border. Ensenada is a popular getaway from Southern California and home to one of the biggest cruise ports in Mexico with hundreds of cruise ships docking here every year.

Ensenada weather year-round is generally mild thanks to its coastal climate, but there are some seasonal weather patterns that you should be aware of.

Whether you want to take a cruise to Ensenada or drive to Ensenada from San Diego or any other destination in the United States, this guide will tell you all about the best time to visit Ensenada and how to plan your trip.

One of the downsides of this month is the increased humidity, so it’s something you should factor in when planning your trip to Baja.

About the author

Alex Gomez, the founder of Mexico Travel Buddy, combines his firsthand, on-the-ground experiences in Mexico with a personal connection to the country, fostered through his Mexican wife and numerous explorations. More info

At the center of Mexico’s best wine country and an important coastal-port city, Ensenada is an attractive travel destination with agreeable weather, great-tasting wine, and entertaining whale-watching. Getting to Ensenada can be a little complicated. However, with some early preparation, you will not only enjoy Ensenada but the journey there as well.

There are several ways to get to Ensenada, which may vary depending on travel budget and preference: travelers can get to Ensenada by plane, car, bus, or cruise ship. Traveling by car or bus is more cost-effective while taking the cruise ship offers a more exciting traveling experience.

Understanding all the minor details is important when traveling, as you will need to consider how you want to get there and the associated costs. In this quick guide, you will find out how to get to Ensenada so you can solidify your travel plans and make the most of your trip.

How To Get To Ensenada

Getting to Ensenada can be a little tricky, as you cannot fly directly into the city like you can with most major metropolitan areas. This means that your trip will most likely involve going from one location to the next until you arrive in Ensenada unless you travel by cruise ship.

Here are the ways to enter Ensenada:

  • Fly to Tijuana
  • Drive to Ensenada
  • Take public transportation
  • Take a cruise ship from L.A .

These are the conventional methods of transportation when going to Ensenada. Depending on your budget and preferences, you may decide between any of these options. And once you make your decision, you will need to figure out the steps you will need to take to get to Ensenada from your current location.

Fly To Tijuana

Tijuana Mexico

Since there is no major airport in Ensenada, the next best thing is the airport in Tijuana, Mexico. Most of the flights coming from Europe route through Mexico city, including flights from London, Paris, and Madrid. For US flights, you can fly to Tijuana directly from many major cities, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Dallas.

Upon arriving at Tijuana airport, you can either drive to Ensenada with a rented vehicle, take an Uber, or take a bus line.

You could also take advantage of the opportunity to check out Tijuana while you’re there.

Drive To Ensenada

If you are coming from the US border to Ensenada, then all you need to do is take Highway-1D to get to Ensenada at the US-Mexico border. You can expect this drive to take about 90 minutes, assuming there is not too much traffic.

Make sure your purchase Mexican vehicle insurance at a cheap cost just in case anything happens during your trip. Learn all the requirements for Mexican Car Insurance in this article . Also, make sure to have some cash handy as you will need to pay three different tolls while driving along Highway-1D which cost about five dollars each.

For international travelers that do not own a personal vehicle, you can defer to a rental vehicle. However, this comes with a catch: there are many restrictions in place for US rental vehicles. Therefore, if you want to rent a vehicle to get around in Ensenada, then you should wait until after you cross the border.

Take Public Transportation

For travelers going through Tijuana airport, there are bus lines that can take you from the airport to Ensenada.

  • The bus lines to Ensenada include Aguacaliente, ABC and Autobuses Elite.
  • The travel time for these buses is approximately 100 minutes.
  • The weekly schedules for these bus lines run for 24 hours, but this varies for holidays and weekends.

Another option available to you in Tijuana is a taxi. Taxis charge high rates, so you can expect to pay $70 to $85 to get a ride to Ensenada. Compared to the buses, the taxis are faster and should only take around 80-90 minutes to get you to Ensenada. If you are in a hurry and would rather avoid waiting for a bus, then taking a taxi might be a good option for you.

Alternatively, if you are traveling from San Diego or any other area where Amtrak is servicing, you can take an Amtrak train to San Ysidro. San Ysidro is right next to the US-Mexico border, and has a bus that can take you from San Ysidro to Ensenada: Mexicoach is a bus line and cross-border service that takes travelers from the San Ysidro border station to Ensenada. Mexicoach is active from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm.

If none of the previous options appeal to you, then you can also think about paying for an Uber. Paying for an Uber will likely cost you a lot, but it may be preferable if you do not want to take a taxi or bus. Uber has a large service area, so you can find Uber drivers at Tijuana airport or regions in Baja California as you would anywhere else.

Take a Cruise Ship From Los Angeles, California

Cruise Ship From Los Angeles

More conventional for travelers coming from the US and Canada, taking a cruise ship is another way to get to Ensenada. Taking a cruise ship affords you many luxuries and beautiful sights of the sea as you approach Ensenada’s coast.

Taking a cruise can cost anywhere between $194 and $259. These cruises depart from L.A to Ensenada with an added stop to Catalina Island, which offers gorgeous beaches and scenic views. Keep in mind that some of these cruises only allow you to stay in Ensenada for a limited time, so if you want to stay in Ensenada for a week or more then you may need to consider other travel options.

Some cruise ships do not require you to bring a passport, but in some cases they do. Since many of these cruises involve stays in Ensenada that last three days or less, oftentimes you will not need a passport. Nonetheless, you will want to have your passport on you just in case to avoid potential complications that could prevent you from entering Mexico and getting to Ensenada.

Taking the cruise ship from L.A. is the most costly method of getting to Ensenada, especially if you are buying plane tickets before going on your cruise. But if you want to make your trip extra spectacular, then the cruise ship is a great option.

The Best Times to Go to Ensenada

summer in Ensenada

Depending on your reasons for visiting Ensenada, the best times to go may vary. Certain times during the year are better for the beach, while others are better for whale-watching or for people wanting to avoid large numbers of tourists.

Although Ensenada has a mild climate, the best time to visit is during the summer between June and September. These months during the summer provide hot enough weather to enjoy the beach, but without too much heat to deter you from staying on the beach for long periods of time.

If you are less focused on the weather and want to avoid large crowds of tourists, then October through November or April through May are great times to go. The weather is still decently warm during these months without too many tourists or cruise ship visitors.

Whale-watching is a fun pastime that is prevalent in the coastal city of Ensenada. If this is an activity you are interested in, then the best times to go are between December and April.

Ensenada is a vibrant coastal city with superb wine, whale-watching, and wonderful beaches . Depending on your travel budget and preferences, you can drive, fly, or take a cruise ship to get to Ensenada.

Getting to Ensenada is not so straightforward, especially for international travelers coming from Europe. Nevertheless, with some careful planning, you can enjoy your trip and stay at Ensenada without any worries!

Is Ensenada Mexico Safe to Visit in 2024? Your Local’s Guide

Is Ensenada safe? You may be concerned about safety in Ensenada if you are traveling to Baja California for the first time.

After all, Mexico on the whole doesn’t always have the best reputation when it comes to safety. It can often feel as though the country is always in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Still, gorgeous Ensenada is one of the most popular Mexican travel destinations for Americans due to its proximity to the US-Mexico border. The port city is just 80 miles south of San Diego, so tons of Californians travel here every year to enjoy the beautiful beaches, surf spots, and local culture.

More than 30 million international tourists travel to Mexico every single year and most visits to the country are trouble-free. Ensenada can be a safe place as long as you use the same common sense precautions you would elsewhere and are aware of which areas you are venturing into.

This comprehensive guide to safety in Ensenada Mexico has been written by a British Travel Writer that lives in Merida, Mexico. It will cover everything you need to consider when planning your trip, and how to stay safe during it.

Rest assured, you are in good hands here. 😉

Table of Contents

Is Ensenada Mexico Safe to Visit in 2024?

Ensenada can be a safe place to travel to as long as you take precautions for your safety. Locals are generally friendly and welcoming, and most tourist areas have a heightened police presence.

Crime Statistics in Ensenada Mexico

On the whole, Ensenada has a relatively low crime rate. The violent crime that does happen here is usually restricted to incidents between drug cartels rather than random acts of violence that affect tourists.

Numbeo is a statistics website that awards different cities around the globe with a safety rating from 0 to 100 based on how safe the residents of that city feel. (Where 0 is very unsafe and 100 is safe).

Ensenada has a safety rating of 61.50 and a low crime rating of 38.83. The risks of being attacked, mugged, robbed, insulted, or having your car/property broken into here are very low.

Some residents are concerned that the rate of crime in the area has been increasing over the last three years but not to the extent that Ensenada is considered in any way dangerous. Ensenada actually has a lower crime rate than Los Angeles (52.72) , New York (53.34), and a number of US cities.

Check your government travel advice for Ensenada

It is a good idea to check your government travel advice before traveling to any country for the first time and that includes Mexico. The U.S. State Department provides a state-by-state breakdown of the safety situation in each of Mexico’s 32 states.

The advice can come across as a little sternly worded, but the website is frequently updated to reflect any new developments or safety concerns in Mexico, so it is a good starting point when planning your trip.

Baja California currently has a level 3 travel warning and is flagged as somewhere that you need to ¨reconsider travel¨ to. However, there are no warnings in place for traveling to Ensenada.

The UK and Canadian travel advisories are also good sources of information, although they are not as detailed as the U.S. State Department’s website.

Is the cartel in Ensenada?

The Tijuana cartel is present in Tijuana, Ensenada, and other cities around Baja California. Most incidents of cartel-related violence are usually restricted to clashes between criminal groups but innocent civilians have been caught in the crossfire in the past.

Unfortunately, Ensenada’s location close to Tijuana and the US border means it is right on one of the key drug smuggling routes that lead into the United States.

In May 2022, eleven people were killed following a shootout between the Arellano Felix Cartel (CAF) and the Sinaloa Cartel.

In August 2022, the Tijuana cartel made a public announcement that they would create violence on the streets of Mexicali, Tijuana, and Ensenada. Consequently, a lot of local businesses closed and tourists were advised to shelter in place.

Still, the chances of being at the wrong place at the wrong time here are slim as long as you take precautions for your safety. By that I mean, you do not wander into dangerous/sketchy areas, you check the local news for any developments and you follow your government travel advice.

How to Stay Safe in Ensenada in 2024

Some practical tips for staying safe in Ensenada Mexico are detailed below. A lot of these things are common sense measures that are good practice wherever you travel but they are still worth reiterating here.

Top tips for staying safe in Ensenada

  • Never walk alone at night
  • Watch your personal belongings, especially in crowded marketplaces
  • Don’t leave any valuables unattended at the beach when you go swimming. Leave them in your hotel safe
  • Don’t wear flashy jewelry, expensive designer sunglasses, or walk around with a pricy DSLR camera hanging around your neck
  • Use Ubers instead of taking random street cabs. Failing that, ask your hotel to order a trusted taxi driver for you
  • Don’t be naive and be wary of over-friendly strangers
  • Before booking accommodation, check past reviews and make sure the area is safe
  • Use ATMs in banks or malls rather than standalone ATMs which are more likely to have been tampered with
  • Don’t carry tons of cash around with you each day. 4000 pesos worth of cash should be the maximum amount you have on you at any time. Keep a spare debit card and an extra $50 USD or so locked away safely in your suitcase for emergencies

Watch your personal belongings

Always keep an eye on your backpack and your personal belongings. In crowded marketplaces like Mercado Los Globos, keep your bag in front of you and never have any valuable items on display or in your back pocket where they are easily accessible.

If you travel to Latin America/Mexico regularly, it might be worth investing in a theft-proof backpack like those offered by Pacsafe . Theft-proof backpacks are waterproof, slash-proof and come with a TSA-approved mesh locking system.

Know which areas are safe and which to avoid

When booking hotels and accommodations in Ensenada, check the property’s rating and past reviews before booking. There are no areas in Ensenada that would be considered overly dangerous and random acts of violence do not really happen in tourist or residential areas.

Sao Bras, Batista Campos, Nazaré, Marco, and Umarizal are particularly safe districts. The Valle de Guadalupe, Playa, and Zona Centro are also very safe and offer hotel options for every budget and travel style.

Is Ensenada safe at night?

In any world city, you need to be more careful at night than you do during the day. You don’t need to lock yourself away in your hotel room in Ensenada after the sun sets but you do need to be more cautious about walking around the city.

Ensenada has a more laid-back nightlife scene than Tijuana and Rosarito but there are still plenty of bars, clubs, and dining options. 1st street is essentially the main nightlife strip and it is fine to walk along here in the early evening.

For a quintessentially Mexican experience, you should go for ice-cold cervezas (beers) at Hussong’s Cantina – the oldest and most famous cantina in Baja California, which first opened its doors back in 1892. Legend has it that the margarita was invented here.

At the entrance, there are even little tubes where visitors used to tie their horses. Los Columpios Daiquiri Bar (Primera 498, Zona Centro) is a super fun, colorful bar that specializes in frozen daiquiris served in a wide variety of flavors.

Cervecería Aguamala (Carretera Tijuana – Ensenada Km 104.5, El Sauzal)  is a great place for craft beers, while Bar Andaluz is a cute, rustic bar that dates back to the 1930s and feels like a journey back in time.

Obviously, if you decide to experience Ensenada by night, you should never leave your drink unattended, or walk home from bars alone intoxicated, etc. You know this anyway 😉

Purchase comprehensive travel insurance before you go

Despite our best planning, you never know what is around the corner and you could fall sick or have an accident anywhere in the world. Today’s health is not promised tomorrow.

For that reason, it is always a good idea to purchase comprehensive travel insurance before traveling anywhere. A good policy will offer at least $250k worth of medical coverage, and it will cover you for additional extras such as repatriation, hiking, adventure sports, loss/theft of luggage, etc.

Medical care in Mexico is much cheaper than in the US. However, if you need treatment or need to be hospitalized, costs can quickly accumulate so it is better to be prepared.

Taking taxis in Ensenada

Uber exists in Ensenada and it is preferable to order a cab via this app than to take a random street taxi. Mexicans generally consider Uber and other ridesharing apps to be the safest transport option as there is more accountability.

You can see the driver’s name, license plate details, experience, and past reviews on the app and you simply don’t have that when you get into a random street car. (Uber is banned in some parts of Mexico but fortunately not in Ensenada).

Some street cabbies might try and trick you by charging a massively inflated price, taking you on a roundabout route through town, or refusing to turn on the meter. At the more extreme end, express kidnappings are an issue in Mexico.

These happen when a tourist gets into a taxi and the taxi driver drives them a short distance before his/her accomplices enter the vehicle and hold the tourist at knife/gunpoint, forcing them to hand over their valuables. Sometimes the tourist is forced to make maximum withdrawals at ATM machines around town until the tricksters have gotten everything they can from them.

For this reason, taking street cabs in Ensenada simply isn’t worth the risk.

Is Ensenada safe for solo travelers?

Ensenada can be a safe destination for solo travelers of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. You will see plenty of Americans that come here for the day to surf and hang out, as well as plenty of expats that have moved to Baja California independently.

Rest assured, you will not stand out or get weird looks for being by yourself because locals have seen solo travelers 10,000 times before. Even solo female travelers can feel comfortable here (this entire website has been written by a solo female traveler based in Mexico).

If socializing is important to you during your trip, you will find that its easy to meet other travelers to hang out with. You can download Couchsurfing and use the hangout function of the app to meet other people in the area, or you can join Facebook groups for expats in Mexico/Baja California.

Natural disasters in Ensenada

Ensenada has an arid, sub-tropical climate, and hurricane season runs in the area from June through to October. (Although late August/September are usually the months with the highest risks.)

Still, most of the time this just results in storms and heavy rainfall. (Although sometimes the rain can flood some of the roads in rural areas or knock our internet/power out for a day or two).

How Safe is Ensenada Mexico? FAQs

Do you have any further questions or concerns about staying safe in Ensenada Mexico? The answers to some frequently asked questions on the topic are detailed below.

Hopefully, you will find the information you are looking for there. If not, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

Is it safe to drive to Ensenada?

It is safe to drive to Ensenada – whether you are driving along the Ruta del Vino, driving in from Tijuana , or crossing the border from the US into Mexico specifically to visit Ensenada. Things have been pretty calm as of late (at the time of writing in January 2024).

However, things can change quickly if there are clashes between criminal groups. For that reason, you should always check the news and the latest developments in the area before you travel.

The roads in the area are generally fine, although there are a fair few potholes that you need to look out for. Driving in Mexico is not as daunting as it may sound , although a lot of drivers drive more aggressively than in the US so to an extent, you have to drive defensively.

Is it safe to drive from San Diego to Ensenada?

It is pretty safe to drive from San Diego to California. To get here, you will most likely cross the San Ysidro International border into Tijuana – one of the main (and safest) crossing points from the United States into Mexico.

Just make sure that you have your passport and everything in order. The border agents on both the US and the Mexican sides of the border are usually friendly and professional but the queues for traveling back into the United States from Mexico can be long so it is important to be patient.

Once you have crossed San Ysidro, follow the signs to Playas, Rosarito, and Ensenada. Take the right turn and follow Avenida Internacional, then follow the signs for Tijuana to Ensenada Highway #1-D.

Join the toll road and follow the signs for Ensenada. The drive is scenic and beautiful and should take just over an hour and a half.

Is it safe to drive from Tijuana to Ensenada?

It is safe to drive from Tijuana to Ensenada. You can take Highway 1 or Highway 1D and both roads are safe and well-maintained.

There are always plenty of cars on the road and no stretch of the journey feels in any way creepy.

Can you drink the tap water in Ensenada?

No. You cannot drink tap water in Ensenada or anywhere in Mexico for that matter. It is not clean and is potentially infected with bacteria and parasites that can make you sick.

Even Mexicans do not drink it. Fortunately, hotels and Airbnbs provide you with complimentary bottled water when you arrive, and large, multi-liter bottles of mineral water can be purchased at any convenience store for just a few pesos.

Is Ensenada safer than Tijuana?

Ensenada is considered safer than Tijuana and it has a much lower crime rate than its neighbour. ( Tijuana can be safe for tourists but it is considered one of Mexico’s most dangerous cities).

Is it safe to walk in Ensenada Mexico?

Yes. It is safe to walk around downtown Ensenada, Playa, and most residential neighborhoods in the city.

Is Ensenada Mexico safe? Final thoughts

So is Ensenada Mexico safe? Yes, this is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico and you will be fine provided that you take precautions for your own safety and practice situational awareness.

Mexico doesn’t have the best reputation, but this is often blown out of proportion, particularly in the United States. You should never let a fear of the unknown stop you from traveling to the places that you really want to visit.

Ensenada makes a great jump-off point for a road trip around the wider areas of Baja California and Baja California Sur. From here you can continue onwards to Cabo San Lucas, Todos Santos, La Paz, and the small town of Rosarito.

Best and Worst Times to Visit Ensenada

The best time to visit Ensenada is July through September when average daytime temperatures reach more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit or the high 20s Celsius.

The worst times are December through March when daytime temperatures drop into the high 60s Fahrenheit or about 20 Celsius. Thousands of tourists visit the graceful cruise port of Ensenada each year. While some consider it a destination worth daring sacrifices, it’s sometimes considered a rather gritty city.

In any case, visitors who are looking to travel to this Mexican showcase may want to know the best time to do so.

In general, Ensenada’s climate is like the Mediterranean. This means summers with little rainfall and high humidity and winters with moderate rain and the occasional frost.

Ensenada is one of the driest cruise ports on the Mexican Riviera . Because of its northern location on the Baja Peninsula, it’s also one of the coolest.

Summer temperatures are mild with an average high of around 82 degrees Fahrenheit or 28 Celsius. The average lows, mostly at night, are about 63 Fahrenheit or 17 Celsius.

Summer is the best time to visit Ensenada because of the mildly warm temperatures and low chance of rain.

Ensenada is mostly dry all year and has the least amount of rain in the summer. Total rainfall is less than one inch a month, according to Mexico’s National Water Commission.

Winter, Spring and Fall

Spring and fall temperatures are somewhat cooler than summer.

The average high temperature hovers around 70 degrees Fahrenheit or 21 Celsius during the day and a chilly 50 Fahrenheit or 10 Celsius at night.

Rainfall increases slightly to about one to two inches a month.

Because of the cooler temperatures, cruise ships visit Ensenada less often and instead go farther south.

Winter daytime temperatures are only slightly cooler than spring and fall.

Temperatures are about 70 Fahrenheit or 21 Celsius during the day. Nighttime temperatures drop into the mid 40s Fahrenheit or single digits Celsius at night.

For cruise travelers, the choice is obvious. The best time to visit Ensenada is during the summer when temperatures are warm but not uncomfortable and the chance of rain is low.

Ensenada is not akin to the warm Caribbean like vacation that many crave. However, unlike many places in the north, it gets close during the summer.

Although the Baja peninsula is a year-round destination, summer is the most active season and has higher prices and higher rates of accommodation.

3 surfers shot in the head while visiting Mexico were found dead in a well, in an area where tourists are usually safe

  • Three men were found dead in a well in Baja California, Mexico, after being shot on a surfing trip.
  • Officials believe the tourists were attacked by three people who attempted to steal their truck.
  • The incident has sparked protests in Ensenada, demanding safety for tourists and locals alike.

Insider Today

Three men in their early 30s have been found dead in a well after being shot in the head while on a surfing trip in Baja California, Mexico.

Two Australian brothers, Callum and Jake Robinson, and their American friend, Jack Carter Rhoad, were near the popular coastal town of Ensenada when they went missing last week.

Their bodies were found in the 15-foot-deep well on Saturday after a dayslong search, and have since been identified by family members, Reuters reported .

Jake, 30, had flown to the US to visit Callum, 33, who was pursuing his dream of being a professional lacrosse player. The week after his trip, Jake was due to start a new job as a doctor in Victoria, Australia. Carter Rhoad, 30, was working as an apparel designer in San Diego, the New York Post reported.

They were last seen on 27 April and, when they didn't show up to an Airbnb booking a couple of days later, were reported missing and an investigation was launched by local authorities and the FBI.

It's thought that the tourists were attacked after they defended themselves from three people who were trying to steal their truck.

Baja California state prosecutor Maria Andrade suggested that the attackers wanted the truck for its tires and shot the three men in their heads when they resisted, Reuters reported.

A burnt-out vehicle suspected to be the surfers' truck was also found in the area, alongside abandoned tents, and a phone linked to them.

Three Mexican nationals, two men and a woman, have been arrested as suspects.

Related stories

A fourth body was also found in the well, but it's believed to be older and from an earlier incident, the Guardian reported .

Turf wars between drug gangs are common in Baja California , which is one of Mexico's most dangerous and violent states. However, Ensenada is generally considered to be safe — about 75 miles south of California, it is a popular spot for US tourists.

The surfers' loved ones have paid tribute

Friends and family of the Robinsons and Carter Rhoad have been sharing tributes to the young men.

"Callum and Jake are beautiful human beings. We love them so much and this breaks our heart," the brothers' parents said in a statement, the BBC reported .

Callum's teammates from Stevenson University Lacrosse Club said in a statement on social media: "With his beautiful long hair and charming smile, he truly embodied the nickname 'big koala' — warm, friendly, and always there to lend a helping hand."

His girlfriend, Emily Horwath, said in an Instagram story that her heart was "shattered into a million pieces."

"I don't have the words right now... I will love you forever," she wrote.

Protesters and mourners took to the streets of Ensenada on Sunday to share their sadness and anger.

They marched with messages on surfboards, such as "They only wanted to surf — we demand safe beaches."

Surfers also held a "paddle out" ocean vigil in memory of the Robinsons and Carter Rhoad.

3 Bodies Found in Baja California Are Identified as Missing Tourists’

Mexican officials said the identities of two Australians and an American had been confirmed by relatives. The men went missing during a surfing and camping trip.

Reporting from Mexico City

Three bodies that were found in the Mexican state of Baja California last week have been identified as those of three tourists from Australia and the United States who had disappeared days earlier, the Mexican authorities said on Sunday.

The bodies were confirmed to be those of Callum and Jake Robinson, two brothers from Perth, Australia, and Jack Carter Rhoad of San Diego, the Baja California attorney general’s office said in a statement. “The confirmation comes after the victims’ families were able to identify them, without the need for genetic testing,” the statement read.

The Robinsons and Mr. Rhoad had been on vacation, surfing and camping along the coast near the Mexican city of Ensenada, when they disappeared on April 27. The Robinsons’ mother said in a social media post on Wednesday that they had never showed up at an Airbnb they had booked in another coastal town.

Early on Friday, the Mexican authorities recovered the three bodies from a 50-foot-deep water hole near La Bocana beach. A fourth, yet unidentified male body, which prosecutors said had no relation to the case, was also found at the bottom of the hole.

Each of the bodies later identified as those of the tourists had a gunshot wound to the head, said María Elena Andrade Ramírez, the state’s attorney general.

Three suspects have been detained in connection with the killings. One has been charged with forced disappearance. Ms. Andrade Ramírez said he tried to rob the Robinson brothers and Mr. Carter of the pickup truck in which they were traveling. When they resisted, she said, he shot them and later disposed of their bodies.

“Unfortunately, they stayed in an inhospitable place where there was no way to call for help,” Ms. Andrade Ramírez said at a news conference on Sunday.

The other two people being detained have been charged with possession of methamphetamine, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said. She said that there might be more arrests, but that there was no indication that any of Mexico’s organized crime gangs had been involved in the killings.

“The hypothesis so far is that they approached with the intent to seize the pickup truck and attacked the victims,” she said.

Ms. Andrade Ramírez said a burned campsite had been discovered in a remote, isolated area south of Ensenada, about four miles from where the bodies were found. A single shell casing and blood stains were found at the site, and the tourists’ pickup truck, also burned, had been abandoned nearby, Ms. Andrade Ramírez said.
