Uniworld Is Offering a 'Mystery Cruise' Around Europe — and Guests Don’t Know the Stops or Activities

Your guess is as good as ours.

uniworld mystery cruise 2024

Want to take a trip but not sure where to go? Get rid of the stress of planning an actual vacation by leaving a few details a little...mysterious.

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises just launched its first-ever Mystery Cruise — a trip that leaves destinations, stops, and perks a secret until the very last minute. While cruises , in general, are very meticulously planned, this one leaves a little room for spontaneity. Either way, you're taking an epic cruise.

The exclusive, 10-day itinerary doesn't have many details available to potential customers (though we're sure Uniworld has it all planned out in secret). Guests don't get to know where they're going, what's included in the package, or what to actually bring until just before they are ready to set sail.

But guests at least get to know how much they're paying for this voyage. Rates begin at $6,999 per person, which includes airfare. Everything from special offshore excursions to onboard entertainment and gourmet meals are also covered in that rate, so guests don't need to worry about paying extra for certain activities.

Guests should be ready for lots of surprises on this cruise. A packing list and clues about where they're going is sent to all guests prior to travel, and other details are revealed when guests are already on their way to the airport.

Naturally, this itinerary asks for guests to give a little extra trust to Uniworld to make sure they have a safe and enjoyable voyage, so it's a great trip for people who like to have a little adventure.

Because itinerary details are kept a secret, it's not known where this cruise embarks from or what ports will be stopped at along the way. However, it is known that this itinerary is for travel in Europe .

Would you book a cruise if without any idea where it was going? Uniworld Boutique River Cruises' new 2022 European mystery cruise asks passengers to do just that, proving that it’s more about the journey than the destination. OK, and a little thrill of the unexpected.

While it may seem like spending close to $7,000 on a mystery vacation is a huge gamble, hopping aboard any of Uniworld’s boutique luxury river cruises is a pretty safe bet. For any haters that may think they’re just repackaging an existing cruise experience, you’re thankfully mistaken.

“We decided to have some fun creating a one-of-a-kind Mystery Cruise with all new experiences that have never been included in Uniworld journeys before,” said Ellen Bettridge, president and CEO of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises. “It’s an incredible bucket list trip full of surprises for those that love the thrill of adventure.”

Uniworld’s first-ever mystery cruise will set sail on June 12, 2022, on a brand new 10-day itinerary that won’t be released until passengers are already on their way to the airport. However, savvy puzzle-solvers can try to crack the mystery as soon as they receive their first unofficial clue: a packing list.

While the itinerary is a secret, Uniworld has released a few details, namely that passengers can expect no surprises when it comes to inclusions. The $6,999-and-up rate is all-inclusive for gourmet meals, excursions, accommodations, and even flights. For obvious reasons, additional details are under wraps.

“With vaccines rolling out and borders opening up, our guests have communicated that they’re willing to travel anywhere just to get back out there and explore the world once again,” Bettridge said. “After this chaotic year, there’s no need to take on any additional stress, so we’ve taken care of all of the details so that our guests can sit back and enjoy this mystery trip of a lifetime.”

Uniworld will be posting additional clues and info on their website , but you’ll have to call their reservations line to book.

On these Uniworld river cruises, the itineraries are a mystery

uniworld mystery cruise 2024

Many cruise passengers choose their trip by itinerary, but on Uniworld Boutique River Cruises' new Mystery Cruises, the unknown is part of the adventure.

Guests only get a few hints as to where they are going before their trip, such as letters with clues in the form of riddles that the river cruise line mails to guests and a list of what to pack. But the itineraries remain, well, a mystery.

The cruise line launched the sailings in June partly as a way "bring back the fun of travel" in the wake of the pandemic, Uniworld president and CEO Ellen Bettridge told USA TODAY. Uniworld recently announced two new Mystery Cruises taking place in June and July 2023.

In addition to getting passengers excited about travel, Bettridge said the line aimed to create a stress-free experience by taking care of all the details travelers might otherwise fret about. "If you don't know where you're going, there's nothing you need to really worry about," she said. "Like, you don't have to plan for anything."

Here is what travelers should (and can) know about the cruises.

Where will Uniworld's Mystery Cruises go?

The first passengers , who embarked on their voyages this year , did not find out their initial destination until they got their airline tickets, which they purchased through the cruise line, but Uniworld is sharing more information with passengers up front ahead of the 2023 sailings.

The June cruise will sail round-trip from Amsterdam, departing June 18, and the voyage departing July 7 will start in Nice, France and end in Lyon, according to the line's website . Both sailings are 10 days long. Air travel was included with the 2022 fare but is not included for 2023, so passengers have more flexibility before and after the cruises, Bettridge said.

What can passengers expect on board?

Uniworld has not released many specifics about the 2023 cruises, but on on the first cruise in June of this year, the line's 361-foot-long River Queen ship visited France, Germany and Switzerland via the Moselle and Rhine rivers, according to an itinerary provided by the line.

Bettridge, who hosted the first sailing, said the line packed the itinerary with "bucket list experiences," some of which Uniworld had never offered before. The line unveiled activities as they went, and guests were able to visit places such as the Porsche Museum and factory in Stuttgart, Germany, the Jungfraujoch mountain saddle in the Bernese Alps, and a visit to the Black Forest with a lunch that included Black Forest cake.

On board there was live music, a magic show, and more.

"A lot of (the passengers) brought the clues with them on the trip, and then they were trying to figure out when that clue was revealed," Bettridge said. "They really got into it."

What else do travelers need to know?

The June 2023 cruise starts at $6,999 and the July sailing starts at $7,399, based on double occupancy, according to the line's website . Those fares include all food and drinks, ground transportation, and excursions.

Because of their small size, Uniworld's ships cannot accommodate wheelchairs or scooters moving throughout the vessels, Bettridge said. However, there are elevators on the majority of its fleet as well as walking sticks available for land excursions, and the line hosts "a wide range of guests with different physical needs."

She also noted that the ships can dock close to land, allowing for easier boarding and disembarkation than on larger ocean vessels. Bettridge encouraged passengers to alert the line to any special requirements ahead of time.

Travelers can book by calling Uniworld's reservations line at 1-800-257-2407.

Los Angeles

uniworld mystery cruise 2024

Los Angeles is the second-most populous city in the United States, after New York City, and the most populous city in the Western United States. With an estimated population of four million, Los Angeles is the largest and most populous city in the state of California and the cultural, financial, and commercial center of Southern California. Nicknamed the "City of Angels" partly because of its name's Spanish meaning, Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic diversity, and sprawling metropolis. The city is also one of the most substantial economic engines within the nation, with a diverse economy in a broad range of professional and cultural fields. Los Angeles is also famous as the home of Hollywood, a major center of the world entertainment industry. A global city, it has been ranked 6th in the Global Cities Index and 9th in the Global Economic Power Index. The Los Angeles combined statistical area also has a gross metropolitan product of $831 billion, making it the third-largest in the world, after the Greater Tokyo and New York metropolitan areas. Los Angeles hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics and will host the event for a third time in 2028.

Cabo San Lucas

uniworld mystery cruise 2024

Cabo San Lucas, where the sea, sun and desert join to cast an air of mystery and romance over all who visit. Cabo was once a tranquil fishing village and, in times long ago, a hangout for pirates. Although no longer the fishing village of old, and not many of the old pirates are seen around town any more, the magic of Cabo remains. Cabo is still small and charming by any standards, with a population of under 30,000. We do have 4 stop lights now. And with the number of activities available to the visitor, you could easily imagine you are in a giant amusement park. Cabo has come of age. Located at the southernmost tip of the magnificent Baja peninsula, Cabo has been blessed with what many describe as the perfect climate. Average year-round temperature is 78 degrees, it is a little cooler in the winter and a bit warmer in the summer. For years Cabo was the remote playground reserved solely for private yacht owners. They flocked here to be near "Marlin Alley", as the waters around Cabo have often been described. The name is well deserved, as Cabo San Lucas is the undisputed billfish capital of the world. But Cabo is far from remote these days, and the attraction of this magical spot is no longer limited to marlin fishing. Cabo can be, many different things to people. Cabo San Lucas has become known as a perfect vacation spot for the entire family. Cabo can be as quiet, romantic and relaxing as any secret hideaway. It can also be as lively as anyone can possibly imagine. If your wish is to enjoy a quiet candlelight dinner, "muy romantico", beside the shimmering sea for just the two of you, we have some of the most romantic dining spots on the face of the earth. If golf, water sports, boating, fishing, ATV's, horseback riding and numerous other activities are what you seek, they're all here, waiting for you. If "party till you drop" is the mood of the evening, Cabo has got it for you, big time!

Puerto Vallarta

uniworld mystery cruise 2024

Puerto Vallarta is a resort town on Mexico’s Pacific coast, in Jalisco state. It is known for its beaches, water sports and nightlife scene. Its cobblestone center is home to the ornate Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe church, boutique shops and a range of restaurants and bars. El Malecón is a beachside promenade with contemporary sculptures, as well as bars, lounges and nightclubs.

uniworld mystery cruise 2024

Mazatlán spreads for 15 sun-splashed miles along a thumb of land that extends southward into the Pacific just below the Tropic of Cancer. Mazatlán thus marks the beginning of the Mexican tropics: a land full of palm trees, perpetual summer and a refuge from winter cold for growing numbers of international vacationers. Mazatlán’s beauty is renowned. Its coast sprinkled with beckoning islands and miles of golden bleaches and blue lagoons, it aptly deserves its title as “Pearl of the Pacific”. Mazatlan meaning "land of the deer" in the ancient Nahuatl language offers 10 miles of inviting sandy beaches. It's no wonder Mazatlan plays host to more than one million visitors per year. The vacationers come and frolic on the beach beside their “Golden Zone” hotels, while in the old town at the tip of the peninsula, life goes on in the old-Mexico style: in the markets, the churches, and the shady plazas scattered throughout the traditional neighborhoods.

uniworld mystery cruise 2024

Hey, there's more to this town than it just being the finish line for the annual Newport-Ensenada Race! The City of Ensenada has completed a total renovation of Primera, the main street downtown. Enjoy a stroll down the cobblestone sidewalk complete with outdoor cafes, interesting shops, strolling musicians and street vendors. The malecon (harbor boardwalk) renovation was completed last year and provides a beautifully landscaped walk along the harbor front to the Ventana Del Mar Plaza with its huge Mexican flag. From there, you can look across the rio at the new small craft harbor nestled in the middle of the new cruise ship docks. It will be interesting to watch the progress on this new endeavor. The story is that in order to expand the cargo port on the north side of the harbor, the developers had to relocate the passenger ships' dock and provide some type of recreational asset for the city. It looks to be a good solution. Ensenada is also a swell place to take possession of your new boat (more on that later), get a new bottom job for your old boat or set as your destination for an extended coastal cruise, a fun weekend road trip or the start of some long distance cruising! The people of Ensenada are trying hard to improve their city, both for turistas, a big part of their income and for themselves and their families. We have seen improvements which are good, and yet some loss of the "Mexico-ness" in some of the tourist areas. We have met a lot of the residents and business people and want to thank them for their hospitality. As visitors, it is our obligation to live up to the Bienvenidos and the Mi Casa es Su Casa that have been extended to us.

Built in 2023, the award-winning Viking Saturn is small in cruise ship standards, accommodating just 930 guests. Its clever layout means each stateroom gets its own veranda, and there's plenty to keep even the most active cruiser occupied. Guests can enjoy the many restaurants, as well as a jazz lounge and the Wintergarden, where you can take afternoon tea while listening to live classical music. There's also a theatre, two cinemas, a sports deck and a pool with a retractable roof, so you can take a dip in any weather. Or you can relax in the Nordic Spa's sauna and steam room. Intriguingly, it also has a Snow Grotto – a 'sanctuary' of fluffy snow and chilled air.

Frequently Asked Questions

Full itineraries for world cruises typically last anywhere from around 100 to 180 days, though Royal Caribbean International 's Serenade of the Seas is currently sailing the longest world cruise at 274 days. If you're not able to set sail for three to five months (or longer), some cruise lines also offer select, shorter segments of their full world cruise itineraries or grand voyages, which are typically two to three months in length.

World cruise fares can vary significantly between cruise lines. Some lines advertise cruise-only fares, which do not include meals at specialty restaurants, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, excursions, some entertainment, or other expenses. On top of that, many cruise lines' base prices exclude port fees and taxes. Given the length of a world cruise, even small expenses can add up after several months on the ship and in ports around the globe. Typically, travelers can expect to spend a base fare of about $15,000 for an inside cabin and as much as $90,000 (or more) for luxury accommodations and an all-inclusive fare.

If you're considering sailing beyond 2025, Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently announced its 140-night 2027 world cruise, World of Splendor, sailing from Miami to New York. The voyage embarks on Jan. 11, 2027, aboard Seven Seas Splendor , and prices start at $91,499 per person. If you want to reserve the over-the-top Regent Suite, you'll need to budget an unheard-of $1.7 million for two guests ($839,999 per person, to be exact).

Regent Seven Seas' all-inclusive fares include almost everything you could need, including door-to-door luggage service, first and business class airfare, pre-cruise gala events, exclusive shoreside experiences, unlimited dry cleaning and laundry, prepaid gratuities, meals, open bars and lounges, unlimited Wi-Fi access, and more. Silversea also offers door-to-door pricing that includes private executive transfers, international business class flights, pre- and post-cruise hotels and transfers, baggage valet, all meals and beverages, butler service, bespoke special events, and other amenities.

Depending on the cruise line, you may receive many additional perks when booking a full world cruise, including shore excursions. All-inclusive luxury lines like Silversea and Regent Seven Seas offer a list of complimentary shore excursions in every port. In addition, Silversea hosts a bon voyage reception, a private dinner and an overnight hotel stay for world cruise guests. It also features exclusive world cruise cultural events in ports around the globe. If you're sailing with Regent Seven Seas, you'll also have pre-cruise gala events and exclusive shoreside experiences throughout the cruise.

Special inclusions, upgrades and other amenities are available with other lines that are not all-inclusive. For example, guests on boutique cruise line Azamara's 2025 world cruise will receive $25,000 in benefits, including $3,000 for shore excursions, 13 exclusive events and much more. Oceania's " simply MORE" offer includes $8,200 in shore excursion credit, as well as many other amenities.

If you're sailing with a larger cruise line, it's also possible to find deals that may include shore excursions or onboard credit you can use for booking tours. Holland America Line offers guests an early booking bonus that includes a list of additional perks, including one complimentary shore excursion, $2,000 per person in onboard credit ($4,000 for solo travelers) and more. MSC Cruises includes 15 free shore excursions and other perks when you book its world cruise.

You may want to consult with a travel agent specializing in cruises to see what additional perks they can offer if you book your world cruise through their agency.

Royal Caribbean International's 274-night Ultimate World Cruise, which set sail in December 2023, will visit all seven continents before guests disembark in September 2024.

Holland America Line's 132-day Grand World Voyage cruise aboard Volendam in 2026 will also visit seven continents, circumnavigating the globe. The epic journey will include a four-day Antarctic experience.
