How to Check UAE Visa Status & Validity Using Your Passport

Previously we shared how to check your UAE visa status and validity online via GDRFA website . But what if you don’t have a copy of your visa and you only have a photocopy of your passport? In this article, we’re going to share with you how can still verify your UAE residency and visa it by using only your passport number. You will be able to track the validity by going to the Federal Authority for Identity & Citizenship (ICA) .

Federal Authority for Identity & Citizenship (ICA) is a government office that specializes in providing identification and confirmation services of Identity for individuals ( Emirates ID ). They also handle citizenship Affairs, passport entry and residence of foreigners in the state. From their website, you can simply enter your passport information (passport number and expiry date) and it will pull up if your visa to check if it is still valid or not. Check out the video tutorial below:

Guide to Verifying if Your UAE Visa Residency is Valid Using Your Passport (with Photos) – via ICA Website

Before anything else, please be reminded that once you have your visa with you, make sure that you scan or take a photo of it and keep a digital copy to your email or put it somewhere secure. This also applies to your passport. It is always good to have copies so you can have a reference to show in case you do not have these handy or in worse cases, you might lose them.

Please follow the steps below on how to verify your UAE visa status with your passport number:

Step 1: Go to this website link by ICA – https://smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/fileValidity

Step 2: Choose “Passport Information” and Select the Type “Visa” — you may also check ‘residency’ if in case the results will not show up any information.

Step 3: Enter your passport number, expiray date of your passport, and choose your country nationality. Don’t mind the number below the “Nationality” as it will auto-populate once you choose your country.

Step 4: Verify the security Captcha and click “Search”.

Step 5: The page will refresh and will show you visa or residency information. It will say if your visa is still active or closed as well as the dates of expiry or validity. Below is a sample of the page with a file status that says “CLOSED” which means that the visa under this passport is no longer active.

I used my old passport which explains why it pulled up this information. On the hand, below you can see an example result where the the status shows as “ACTIVE” and it also shows the expiration date which matches with the visa under my new passport. So please try to toggle between the Types whether it is “Residency” or “Visa” in case you need to double-check your info. But it should generate a result given that you have been in the UAE and have resided here.

So this is the process of looking up your UAE visa information using only your passport. You will be able check your file status residency or visa if it is valid or not.

This is really helpful if you do not have your UAE visa with you on hand. You can also check if the visa that was issued to you is real or fake using this process. At least you can cross-check it through this official government website in order to see if it is active or not.

HOW TO CHECK VISA STATUS IN THE UAE ONLINE

A visa is an extremely important document for expat residents in the UAE. Not only does it certify your legal status as a resident, but it is also required to lease an apartment, find a villa for rent in Dubai , apply for a dependent’s visa and more.

Thankfully, the UAE Government has an official portal to help you access visa-related services. Using this method, you need your passport number to check your UAE resident visa validity. 

To answer your question, “how to check my visa status in the UAE”, we have listed down all the methods for UAE visa status check online and offline.

UAE VISA CHECK BY PASSPORT NUMBER

For UAE visa status check online by passport number , here’s what you need to do.

• Visit the ICP Smart Services portal for visa check by passport number link: https://smartservices.ica.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/fileValidity
• Select “Change Language” and click on English
• Click on the “Passport Information” tab
• Select “Visa” or “Residency,” depending on your visa type
• Enter your passport number and passport expiry date (UAE residents can also enter their Emirates ID)
• Select your nationality from the dropdown menu
• Check the captcha checkbox before you click on the search tab

If the information you provided is correct, the page will display all your visa details, including the UAE visa expiry date.

Please note: the above-mentioned method is also valid for Dubai visa check online by passport number only.

HOW TO CHECK DUBAI VISA STATUS USING GDRFA PORTAL

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) is tasked to deal with and respond to all UAE visa-related rules, applications, queries and concerns. So far, only Dubai has a separate portal that allows you to check your UAE visa status online.

GDRFA Dubai Website

If you have an entry permit/residence visa, here’s how you can check your UAE visa status using the GDRFA website.

• Visit the official website, go to services and then visa status .
• Select “Residence Validity” from the drop-down menu as the service you seek for your UAE visa enquiry .
• Enter your residence file number using your year of issue. You can find the residence file number on the visa page of your passport. 
• Next, enter your first name, as per your passport and select your gender .
• Specify your correct date of birth in the dd-mm-yyyy format .
• Enter the Captcha code in the specified bar and click “Submit.”

Given all your details are correctly entered, your visa validity details will appear in green below your submission form. The details will include your UAE visa expiry date, name, date of birth, nationality and gender.

UAE residents can also use their Emirates ID instead of their passport number to check visa validity via ICP smart services .

GDRFA Dubai Application

GDRFA Dubai launched an app for expats in the UAE to provide further ease in visa-related matters. If you don’t want to use the website, download the GDRFA Dubai app. Here’s how you can use it to confirm your visa expiry date.

• Open the app and select the “Services” label
• Click on “Entry Permit / Residence Status” and then select “Residence Inquiry”
• Enter your details: Visa code, first name, nationality and date of birth
• Double-check your input and then click “Inquiry”

If the entered details are correct, the page will display a green tick with your visa details . These details will include your full name, UAE visa expiry date, visa type, and visa number. You don’t need to sign up or enter login credentials to check your visa status. 

You obviously need your passport details for each method to check UAE visa validity, but you don’t always carry it with you. A smart way to go about it is to keep a scanned version of your passport in your phone, or at least a photocopy of it in your wallet. This way, you can confirm your UAE residence visa validity whenever you want.

The same process can be applied to check the status of a Dubai visit visa.

How to check uae visa status with passport number offline.

Another way to conduct UAE visa check by passport number is by calling 600-522-222. For offline Dubai visa status check by passport number, you can call Amer Centre at 800-5111. If you are calling from outside the country, the number is +971-4-313-9999.

I have recently obtained Covid-19 PRA test from an approved Emirates Airlines Clinic. My test result is Negative / Not Defected. The Emirates Staff at Lahore Airport Departure Desk has informed that I cannot travel to Dubai as Tourist on Canadian Passport unless I obtain a pre- visit Authorisation from GDRFA . Please advise if I need any pre- authorisation from GDRFA as a clearance to board the airplane. Has any changes occured due to Covid-19 travel restrictions and any travel restrictions imposed for Canadians Passport Holder to benefit from the Visa on Arrival at Dubai. On Tuesday, August 3, the National Crisis and Emergency Management Authority and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in the UAE announced residents who have received both doses of an approved Covid-19 vaccine in the UAE can return home starting August 5.

Currently, only UAE residence visa holders who have taken two doses of the Covid-19 vaccinations in the Emirates are allowed to return home.

Additionally, vaccinated and unvaccinated health workers, teachers, humanitarian cases and those employed in federal and local government agencies can fly to the UAE from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Nigeria and Uganda.

Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) and General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) approvals are mandatory for inbound travellers. However, during their enforced stay in these countries, visas of many residents have either expired or they have stayed outside the country for over six months.

How can I check if my visa is valid for entry?

Dubai residents can check their visa status using their passport and Emirates ID numbers here:

Residents can check their visa status using their passport or Emirates ID numbers.

What can I do if I have stayed outside the UAE for over six months?

The general rule is that if expatriate residents, that is, people who hold a UAE residence visa, live outside UAE for more than six months continuously, their residency visa will be automatically nullified. If this happens, they will have to apply for a new entry permit to enter the UAE again.

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA) has stated on its website that the application may be rejected for reasons related to precautionary measures. However, this procedure does not mean that the applicant will not be allowed entry into the country.

What’s next after I file for my re-entry permit?

Employees who have been stranded outside the UAE for over six months may need to provide a supporting letter issued by their employer or sponsor, stating they are an employee of the company. The letter can be provided to the immigration officer at the airport.

Can I apply for an entry permit while abroad?

Yes. An entry permit is a document issued by the ICA or GDRFA that allows the foreigners to enter and stay in the UAE legally for a certain period of time. The document may be in a physical or an electronic form. Before you apply for one, check if you need an entry permit, or you might get it on arrival.

The party sponsoring the person who wants to enter the UAE will handle the entry permit transaction through GDRFA’s online and offline channels. The sponsor could be a company from the private sector, a public entity, a relative, a UAE-based airline or a hotel and so on.

Depending on your reason to enter the UAE, there are various types of entry permits. Some of them are employment, family visit, tourism/transit, treatment, mission, attending conferences.

The entry permit has a validity date, which refers to the period within which the entry permit must be used by entering the UAE through one of its entry points at the land borders, airports or seaports. For most entry permits, the validity is two months. The validity of entry permits cannot be extended, they automatically expire upon the lapse of their time.

What can I do if my visa has expired?

At the moment, authorities in the UAE have made no provisions to allow those on expired visas to re-enter the UAE, even if they are on the 30-day grace period after their visa expiry. Their sponsor (employer/ spouse/ parent) will have to cancel their existing visa and apply for a new entry permit.

Can I apply for a visa extension from overseas?

There is currently no provision to apply for a visa extension while a resident is overseas. However, travel agents and diplomatic missions are hopeful authorities in the UAE may review this and provide guidance once restrictions are fully lifted.

Can I enter the UAE on a tourist visa?

Tourist visa holders from India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh, for example, cannot enter the UAE directly from these countries. Instead, they can quarantine in a third country for at least 14 days before coming into the UAE.

For example, if you are staying in a green county like Qatar and you’ve been quarantined there for 14 days, you can travel into the Emirates with a tourist visa, said Raheesh Babu, group COO of Musafir.com. Some passengers have opted to travel this way and got to the UAE just in time before their visas expired.

In order to get a tourist visa to the UAE, you need to get in touch with one of the UAE-based airlines, a tour agency or a hotel (where you intend to stay) in the UAE who will apply for visa on your behalf to the official  visa-issuing authorities  in the UAE.

Dubai: For UAE residents, the world just got a little smaller. Nine countries now welcome UAE residents with a visa on arrival, eliminating the complexities of pre-entry visa applications.

The accessible destinations for UAE residents sans pre-entry visa requirements are: Georgia, Maldives, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Montenegro, Seychelles, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Nepal.

Travelers from the UAE must ensure they carry essential documents before departure, including a passport valid for at least six months, a valid UAE residency visa, confirmed reservations at their destination, and adequate funds to support their travel expenses.

Such a combination of ease and accessibility makes these countries perfect for spontaneous travelers looking to explore new cultures and experiences with minimal preparatory hassle.

1. Georgia - Known for its rich cultural heritage, the country offers 90-180 days visa-free travel for UAE residents. Visitors are required to present a valid residence, a passport with at least 6 months' validity, hotel reservations, and proof of sufficient funds.

2. Maldives - A paradise with stunning beaches and clear waters, the Maldives offers a 30-day free visa on arrival, which can be extended for a fee. Travelers must submit a health declaration 48 hours before travel and provide documents including a passport valid for at least one month post-departure, hotel reservation proof, return flight tickets, and evidence of sufficient funds.

3. Azerbaijan - This country blends unique history and picturesque landscapes. A visa can be obtained on arrival for a fee of Dh 92. Required documents include a valid passport, a copy of the UAE residence visa, proof of hotel and flight reservations, and two recent passport photos.

4. Armenia - Offers a visa-free entry for UAE nationals, while residents must present a UAE residence permit upon arrival.

5. Montenegro - Known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. UAE nationals enter without a visa, and residents can obtain a visa on arrival. Necessary documents include a passport valid for 6 months, UAE residency, health insurance, confirmed return tickets, and hotel reservations.

6. Seychelles - Famous for its luxury resorts and tropical forests, offers visa on arrival for UAE residents. Required documents include a valid passport, UAE residency, return ticket, confirmed hotel booking, and sufficient travel funds.

7. Malaysia - Known for its rainforests and cityscapes, allows UAE residents to visit for up to 90 days without an eVisa. Required documents include the original passport, return ticket, and proof of residence reservation.

8. Indonesia - Offers natural beauty from the beaches of Bali to the rainforests of Sumatra. UAE residents can obtain a visa on arrival with proper travel documents including original passport, UAE residency, return tickets, and residence confirmation.

9. Nepal - Offers breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage. UAE residents receive a visa on arrival, needing an original valid passport and proof of travel and residency reservations.
