UAE Tour 2023: Evenepoel seals overall victory, UAE Team Emirates rider Yates wins final stage

Sport uae sport.

  • Golf in UAE

World champion is now looking forward to Giro d’Italia in May

sport

Dubai: UAE Team Emirates rider Adam Yates won the final stage of the UAE Tour at Jebel Hafeet while Remco Evenepoel of Soudal-QuickStep, who finished second, sealed overall victory.

Yates began his attack in the 166km stage 7 with 6km to go with Evenepoel and Sepp Kuss of Jumbo-Visma close behind.

Evenepoel then overtook Yates while Kuss fell behind the pair only for the world champion to fall short with 3km remaining. The Belgian rider did well after initially falling 15 seconds behind, but even after a spirited performance he could not keep up with Yates’ acceleration and had to settle for second on the stage, 10 seconds down on the Briton.

Third place

Geoffrey Bouchard of AG2R-Citroën took third with Kuss finishing fourth. Pello Bilbao of Bahrain Victorious and Luke Plapp of Ineos came fifth and sixth respectively. Plapp sealed second overall while Bilbao was bumped off the podium by Yates thanks to his time bonus for the stage victory.

sport

“The tactic was to go full gas at the bottom. We had nothing to lose. I was so far down on the GC after the crosswind stage, we just had to go all out from the bottom and see what happened,” Yates said. “The guys did an amazing job. I attacked quite early but I knew I had to push really hard to drop the guys. And finally I managed to do it.”

Having marked his first win as world champion, Evenepoel will feel confident with the Giro d’Italia next in May. “It’s the first race I came to try to do a good GC,” he said. “I haven’t gone to altitude yet, I’ll go in a few days, so I can only improve. But I can be really happy and proud with the shape I have now.”

Tadej Pogacar leads UAE Team Emirates line-up for 2023 Tour de France

Tadej Pogacar leads an experienced team for the 2023 Tour de France after UAE Team Emirates announced its eight-rider line-up for the race on Monday.

Pogacar, the two-time Tour de France champion, will aim to win the world's most prestigious road race for a third time in four years having been narrowly beaten last year by Team Jumbo-Visma's Jonas Vingegaard. The 2023 tour begins on Saturday in Bilbao, Spain.

Slovenian Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates competes on the Mur de Huy-Muur van Hoei during the 86th edition of the men's race "La Fleche Wallonne", a one day cycling race (Waalse Pijl - Walloon Arrow), 194,2 km from Herve to Huy, in Belgium, on April 19, 2023. (Photo by DAVID PINTENS / Belga / AFP) / Belgium OUT

The 24-year-old Slovenian will be supported by a combination of climbers and flat-terrain experts.

Assistance in the mountains will come from Polish rider Rafal Majka – winner of the tour's mountain classification in 2014 and 2016 – Britain's Adam Yates, who won the white jersey for best young rider in 2014 and has 11 grand tour stage victories to his name, 2022 Austrian national champion Felix Grossschartner, and Spain's Marc Soler.

UAE Team Emirates' best chances of success in the flat stages will likely come from Italian sprinter Matteo Trentin, who has won three stages at the Tour de France and is a former European Road Race champion. Denmark's Mikkel Bjerg and Norwegian Vegard Stake Laengen complete the line-up.

Sports manager Joxean Matxin Fernandez will lead the squad alongside sports directors Andrej Hauptman, Simone Pedrazzini, and Marco Marcato.

“The Tour is one of the biggest events in world sport and we’re very pleased and excited to be a part of it," Pogacar said. "As a team we have worked so hard to prepare and everything is where it needs to be, we have a very good group. There will be some serious competitors but that will always be the case in the biggest races. We are going there to put on a good show and of course with the aim of victory.”

Pogacar, the world's top-ranked road cyclist, is one of the leading favourites to win the 2023 Tour de France, which is expected to be a direct battle between the Slovenian and defending champion Vingegaard.

Pogacar has had a remarkably successful season so far, claiming 12 victories and making history along the way before sustaining a broken wrist during the Liege-Bastogne-Liege in April. He returned last week to collect wins 13 and 14 by completing the National Championships double, winning the time trial and road race .

The 2023 Tour de France will comprise 21 stages, starting with a 182km hill stage in Bilbao. There will be a total of eight flat stages, four hilly stages, eight mountain stages with four summit finishes (Cauterets-Cambasque, Puy de Dome, Grand Colombier and Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc), and one individual time trial. The 21st and final stage will conclude in Paris on July 23.

Tour de France

7 rookies who will light up the tour de france, from a belgian 'bull' to a french featherweight: our pick of the fearless, fast debutants gunning to impress on the route between florence and nice..

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

The Tour de France is not like any other race. It’s the ultimate prestigious, pressure-cooker event, competing against the very best racers in the world in their top form. A young, inexperienced rider underestimates the challenge at his peril.

But then, there are some sparkling talents in the modern peloton who are like not any other riders. They are being blooded in the 2024 Tour, and they’re fearless and pushing for success.

Here’s a look at the raw diamonds being polished and refined over the next three weeks. From sprint stages to big breakaways, hilly transition tests, and mountain-packed days where the GC battle, there’s a contender for every scenario in this look at seven potential stars of the summer.

Juan Ayuso and João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates)

Juan Ayuso

It’s hard to believe that Juan Ayuso is only 21 years old. He already has a Vuelta fourth place and third place finish to his name, achieved in 2023 and 2022 respectively. His teammate João Almeida has an equally impressive record, consistently in the top-10 in grand tour and one-week stage races in recent years.

Both will be expected to be among Tadej Pogačar’s trusted mountain men on UAE Team Emirates, supporting him and helping to burn off all but his hardiest rivals with a searing pace. They’ve already shown they have the ability and consistency to finish inside the top-five themselves and can hold their own against the clock.

Ayuso is also a surefire white jersey contender. Having “Pogi” as leader takes the pressure off the Spaniard and means he flies under the radar while learning the ropes. Either rider, if let off the leash, could surprise the cycling world as a possible secondary option who finishes on the podium, à la Adam Yates last year.

Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost)

Digging deep in this year's Strade Bianche. Ben Healy won't be wearing the distinctive Irish national champion's kit in his debut Tour, having missed the defence of his title to be fresh for the Tour. But his riding style and aggression should make him unmistakeable anyway. (Photo by Chris Auld)

The Irishman with the earring burst onto the scene in the spring of 2023, finishing second at Amstel Gold Race and taking a Giro d’Italia stage win with a 50km solo ride.

It’s a case of “catch Ben Healy if you can” for his rivals: he loves an aggressive race and any aerodynamic advantage. Expect him to be going up the road on hilly days. The harder, the better for the EF Education-EasyPost attacker.

He has been working on his heat acclimatization for the sweltering conditions and his recent Tour of Slovenia win was a reminder of his knack for timing a move and staying away from the bunch.

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-Quick Step)

Remco Evenepoel

It’s easy to forget it, but yes, Remco is a Tour de France newbie. The Tour de France is about the last big race he hasn’t done, having wowed and soloed to victory in many other prestigious ones. He’s already a world road champion and two-time Liège-Bastogne-Liège winner. This prodigy knows what he’s doing and wins races – 55 already – like they’re going out of fashion.

The 2022 Vuelta victor also has a grand tour to his name, but he has shown a few hints of limitations in the high mountains, dropping out of the maillot jaune  on the way to seventh at the recent Dauphiné and capitulating at the Vuelta last year, crashing out of the GC conversation.

He might have dubbed his team “underdogs” pre-race, but the Belgian cycling superstar is a heavyweight. He’s here to compete for the yellow jersey. Top-five here would be a good result, learning more lessons along the way. Expect a spell in the  maillot blanc  too.

Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny)

This fast-finishing kid from Walloon farming country is talked about in hushed tones in his native Belgium as a possible successor to Tom Boonen. He can put out incredible power, able to push over 1,600 watts at a finish after 200km in the saddle.

He arrives in great confidence and wearing the Belgian tricolore , beating Jasper Philipsen to the title no less. “I can learn a lot here,” De Lie said in his media conference pre-race. This Tour promises to turn around a season where he had so-so spring form, suffering with Lyme disease in March.

If you want a new sprint name to cause a surprise, look no further than “the Bull of Lescheret.”

Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech)

Derek Gee / Critérium du Dauphiné

If “Gee Whizz” doesn’t become his nickname, I’ll be very disappointed, because the Canadian former track pursuiter seems able to do pretty much anything.

He was the talk of the Giro d’Italia last year, getting into breakaways like it was nothing, having a string of second places and near misses. Israel-Premier Tech moved fast to tear up his original deal and give him a whopping six-year contract.

Last month, Derek Gee became “Derek GC”, finishing third at the Critérium du Dauphiné and taking an opportunistic stage win. While it’s difficult to see the 75kg Ottawa man notching up a top-10 finish in his debut Tour, this powerhouse will be one of their frontmen chasing a stage win.

Keep one eye on teammate and fellow rookie, Stevie Williams too. This year, the Briton has been making up for lost time, winning a maiden WorldTour stage race title at the Tour Down Under and following it up with Flèche Wallonne victory in freezing, wintry conditions.

Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ)

French cycling needs a new winning hope and heartthrob now that Thibaut Pinot has said au revoir , and this 20-year-old is just the ticket.

Briefly the leader of the Vuelta a España last year in his very first grand tour, Martinez is a 50kg lightweight who makes high mountains look like molehills. This punchy young prospect been setting the scene alight with five one-day wins this season, the most prestigious being the Trofeo Laigueglia.

The little man from Cannes can be a cycling star, just like his relatives: father Miguel is a former Olympic and world champion, his grandfather Marino was the King of the Mountains in the 1978 edition. Don’t expect him to soar into the top 10 GC just yet though.

“The goal is to chase stage wins, there will be necessary days where I’m in the gruppetto, preserving my energy,” he said in Groupama-FDJ’s pre-race press conference.

2024 Tour de France: Romain Bardet wins Stage 1, full race results

uae tour team 2023

Bold racing from France’s Romain Bardet and the Netherlands’ Frank van den Broek paid off as the pair got their storybrook ending to win Stage 1 of the 111th edition of the Tour de France on Saturday.

In his final year before retirement, Bardet will finally wear the coveted yellow jersey. Bardet had previously won three Tour de France stages from 2015-2017, but this opening stage win will surely be the sweetest.

After his win, Bardet told the media that the yellow jersey was the last goal of his decade-long career.

“I’m finally myself, I’m at a loss for words,” Bardet said .

Bardet was joined at the finish line by teammate van den Broek, who helped the team leader all the way to the finish line, highlighting the importance of teamwork throughout the 21-stage race.

Stage 1 of the 2024 Tour de France featured an unprecedented Grand Départ in Italy to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Ottavio Bottecchia's historic 1924 victory as the first Italian to win the Tour. Riders completed a challenging 205 km (128 miles) hilly route with seven categorized climbs and over 3,600m (11,800 feet) in elevation gain. Originating in Florence, Italy, cyclists rode through San Marino and the Apennine mountain range to reach the Italian city of Rimini on the Adriatic coast.

Bardet and van den Broek broke away from the peloton with approximately 40km to go. Although the field faced a strong headwind down the flat road into Rimini, the pair managed to withstand an encroaching peloton armed with the field’s best sprinters with just a few meters to spare.

A group of the best climbers broke away for most of the race, but Norway’s Jonas Abrahamsen did enough to earn the King of the Mountains classification and will wear the polka-dotted jersey used to recognize the best climber.

Temperatures over 90 added to the difficulty of this stage and team Astana Qazaqstan paid a heavy price. Team leader Mark Cavendish appeared to struggle with heat-related issues and dropped from the peloton early on. His teammate, Michele Gazzoli of Italy, who also seemed affected by the heat, became the first man to withdraw from the race.

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar, the favorite to win the 2024 Tour de France, set himself up well with a fourth-place finish, while Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard proved he is certainly healthy enough to be in the mix as he pursues a three-peat after sustaining serious injuries in a crash in April.

Which Riders Didn’t Make the Cut for the 2024 Tour de France?

Here are eight notable riders who will miss this year’s race, from Sepp Kuss to Julian Alaphilippe, and the strategic or unfortunate reasons behind their exclusions.

76th criterium du dauphine 2024 stage 1

And it’s become harder than it once was: starting in 2018, grand tour rosters were cut from nine riders to eight. For some teams, the impact was minimal, but for others–especially teams with multiple leaders and/or goals–it caused headaches. Coupled with the fact that riders get sick, hurt, and just plain slow down, one can easily understand the delicate balancing act that team directors face when reconciling egos with aspirations–including the expectations of sponsors and fans.

This year’s Tour was no different, with several riders being left home as rosters were announced in the week leading up to this weekend’s Italian “Grand Depart.”

Here’s a rundown of eight riders who–for various reasons–won’t be riding the 2024 Tour de France:

Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step)

France’s Julian Alaphippe won six stages at the Tour de France from 2018 to 2021 and famously wore the yellow jersey for 14 days in 2019, ultimately finishing fifth overall. But it’s since been a rough couple of years for the former two-time world champion, thanks in part to a crash at Liège–Bastogne–Liège in 2022 that left him with two broken ribs, a broken scapula and a collapsed lung. After missing the race in 2022, the Frenchman returned to last year’s Tour de France, but was clearly a step or two below where he once was–much to the dismay of his team’s general manager, Patrick Lefevere.

However, things seem to be looking up for the 32-year-old. In May, he took a fantastic stage win at the Giro d’Italia in a ride that called to mind his glory years. But with his team going all-in on Belgian Remco Evenepoel’s bid for a podium finish at the Tour de France, there was no place for the Frenchman.

Chris Froome (Premier Tech)

Four-time winner Chris Froome will not be competing at the Tour de France for the second year in a row. And while it’s sad to see the 39-year-old on the outside looking in, it makes sense: Israel-PremierTech has won three stages in the last two Tours de France and seems to have found a winning formula by coming to the Tour de France with a roster filled with versatile opportunists who can win stages on all sorts of terrain.

And the Briton has done little to earn a spot on the team’s eight-man roster. He’s barely raced this season (or last season, for that matter), and when he has, he’s never come close to the top of the results. Froome’s story seems to epitomize the fragile nature of professional sports stardom: one minute, you’re on the top of your game, and before you know it, you’re an afterthought.

Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates)

American Brandon McNulty raced the Tour de France in support of Tadej Pogačar in 2021 and 2022. Still, the 26-year-old will miss the French grand tour for the second year in a row after the team stacked its roster with three of the team’s other grand tour contenders who will support the Slovenian in his bid to win the Tour de France less than two months after winning the Giro d’Italia.

Missing the Tour again has to be a disappointment for the American, who’s won seven races so far in 2024 and seems to be getting better each season. He’ll likely use the time to prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games, where he’ll shoot for a medal in the individual time trial.

Tim Merlier (Soudal-Quick-Step)

Another casualty of Soudal-Quick Step’s bid to put Evenepoel on the Tour de France podium, Merlier–who won a stage with Alpecin-Fenix in 2021 and three stages at the Giro d’Italia this spring–will miss the French grand tour for the third year in a row. It’s likely that the team was clear with the Belgian that this could be the case when they signed him prior to last season, but it’s an omission worth keeping in mind as we all watch Evenepoel try and become the first Belgian to win the Tour since 1976.

Stage wins are valuable commodities at the Tour de France, but leaving someone like Merlier home is a calculated risk that teams like Soudal-Quick Step feel they must take to finish on the final podium. But if Evenepoel falters–and Quick-Step goes winless at the Tour for the first time since the late 90s–the team’s critics will be justified in asking why the Belgian sprinter was left at home.

Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike)

Kuss was expected to be Jonas Vingegaard’s top lieutenant again at this year’s Tour de France. And with Visma-Lease a Bike besieged by injuries heading into the Tour–including those sustained by Vingegaard himself in a crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in early April–the team needed all the help it could get heading into the Tour.

Well, things went from bad to worse after Kuss–who won last year’s Vuelta a España–abandoned the Critérium du Dauphiné with a cold and then two weeks later was ruled out of the Tour de France after testing positive for COVID-19. It’s a sad turn of events for a rider who played a central role in each of the team’s seven grand tour victories, and hopefully, the 29-year-old can recover in time to prepare to defend his title at the Tour of Spain later in the summer.

Daniel Martínez (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe)

Martínez took second at the recent Giro d’Italia–the best grand tour finish of the 28-year-old Colombian’s career–but was still left off the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe roster for the Tour de France. That says less about Martínez than it does about the depth of the German team, which has the luxury of heading to the Tour with Slovenia’s Primož Roglič leading the team and a former Giro d’Italia champion in Australia’s Jai Hindley and the sixth-place finisher at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné, Russia’s Aleksandr Vlasov supporting him.

If it’s any consolation, missing the Tour puts Martínez in the driver’s seat to lead the team at the Vuelta a España–assuming everyone else buries themselves to help Roglič win the Tour.

Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale)

O’Connor’s been featured in the first two seasons of the Netflix docuseries Tour de France: Unchained –and the producers haven’t always cast him in the best light. Sensitive, explosive, and sometimes downright bratty, he was a hard rider to like for most of the series–at least until the second half of the second season, in which he finally stopped thinking of himself as a GC rider and instead starting racing to win stages–either for himself or on behalf of his teammates.

But the 28-year-old–who won a stage and finished fourth overall at the Tour de France in 2021–won’t be riding the French grand tour this year after leading the team at the Giro d’Italia this spring. Taking a break from the Tour de France pressure cooker was obviously the right move for the Australian: he finished fourth overall at the Italian grand tour, no doubt increasing his value heading into the off-season. At that point, he’ll be free to sign with another team.

Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek)

In the last two years, Milan has won four stages and twice won the Points Competition at the Giro d’Italia, which might lead some to think he’s ready to try his hand at winning field sprints at the Tour de France. Well, those folks obviously don’t run the show at Lidl-Trek because the team is waiting at least another year before sending him to the Tour–most likely so he can spend time preparing to win a gold medal on the track at the Summer Olympics.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.
