If you've always wanted to travel to Ireland but are afraid of flying, or if it's been a lifelong dream to set sail on the seas, why not consider traveling to Ireland by boat?

Cruise lines and passenger services still operate trans-Atlantic routes from ports like Ft. Lauderdale, Los Angeles, and of course New York in the US, and many sail into the Irish port towns of Belfast, Cork, and Dublin.

While there are several companies that make stops at Irish ports, most do tours of Ireland and the British Isles based out of London, rather than a trans-Atlantic route with a port of call in Ireland.

Silversea , Regent , and Cunard , which owns Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mary 2, and Queen Victoria, all offer routes with an Irish stop. Certain tours from Princess Cruises offer stops in Ireland, such as their Trans-Atlantics and British Isles tours.

The alternative to a pricey cruise is to travel by cargo ship. Ireland as an island nation receives plenty of freighter traffic, and it’s easier than you might think to hitch a ride on a commercial ship.

Freighter travel agencies exist, and among the best are A la Carte Freighter Travel and  Maris Freighter Cruises . If you live close to a major port city in the US, call any of these companies to see what they have available heading towards Europe and Ireland.

Next, call the port authority itself, to see what freighter companies operate out of your nearest seaport.

Prices vary widely based on time of year, the number of passengers, and ports of call, but the one certainty is that you’ll need traveler’s insurance. It’s a near-universal requirement of freighter companies.

It's important to note that travel aboard a freight isn’t a cruise, though! You’ll need to bring along your own entertainment, as well as any food you want to have with you, since you’ll be eating with the crew, and you’ll be eating whatever is prepared in the galley. 

Whichever way you cross the seas, there are a few things to keep in mind. Naturally, you’ll need a passport – seaports have customs and immigration officers, too.

Traveler’s insurance is also a necessary requirement of crossing international waters. Rates vary widely based on the ports of call visited, so it’s necessary to have a complete itinerary before getting insurance. It protects things like travel disruptions and unforeseen emergencies. It’s also a legal requirement for the unconventional cargo ship option.

CLING TO THE CLIFFS

Over one million people visit the Cliffs of Moher annually, and you could be one of them — they're about a two-hour drive away from  Cork . Witness the majesty of Ireland's top natural attraction, which stretches for five miles and rises up to 214 meters. Be prepared, though: The Atlantic sea breeze at the Cliffs of Moher can literally blow you away. 

ENJOY THE KNIGHT LIFE

Get the gift of gab at Cork's famous Blarney Castle, where you'll find the Blarney Stone, which legend says will bestow on you the gift of eloquence (but only if you can bend over backwards to kiss it). Or explore the 12th-century Romanesque architecture of the Rock of Cashel, Ireland's most-visited heritage site, about an hour's drive from  Waterford .

To connect with nature in the middle of the city center, head to St. Stephen's Green in Dublin, where you can find an ornamental lake and several walking paths. CUISINE STIR THE POT 

Irish food is synonymous with comfort. Whether it's a hearty Irish stew or traditional bacon and cabbage, Ireland's cuisine is all about stick-to-your ribs satisfaction — all served with an equally comforting pint of Guinness, of course.

Irish stews come in many forms, but the three key ingredients are lamb, potatoes and onion. Carrots often make an appearance in the dish's rich broth, and the addition of thyme complements the gamey flavors of the lamb. You'll find traditional Irish stew on most pub menus.

BACON ME HUNGRY

Bacon and cabbage is a simple but beloved Irish dish. It includes sliced back bacon — which is thick-cut and steak-like rather than thin and crispy — boiled with traditional cabbage and potatoes. It's often prepared with spicy mustard seeds and fresh parsley or another herb sauce to balance out the hearty flavors.

CRACK OPEN COCKLES

Made famous in the Irish tune "Molly Malone," cockles are small saltwater clams found along the Irish coastline, and they've become a local delicacy. They're usually served boiled alongside mussels, or in a chowder-like soup with a creamy, buttery broth.

Running trips to the magnificent Sliabh Liag Cliffs,  Sliabh Liag Boat Tours  take you to see one of the highest sea cliffs in Europe standing at 600m. Get close to the cliffs and appreciate this spectacular sight; visitors are sometimes joined by dolphins, seals, basking sharks and even whales.

Wetsuits are provided for those who wish to swim in the crystal-clear water of the secluded coves or you can brave the water without one. The tour lasts about one and a half hours or sometimes a bit longer as you take in many wonderful sights.

In Dublin’s Fair City…

Dublin is a city with a big heart - the welcome is warm. We know Dublin well - we sail into it every day from Holyhead, past the iconic Poolbeg Chimneys and the red lighthouse perched out to sea on the Great South Wall.

Why not start your visit with a trip to one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions - The Guinness Storehouse where you’ll learn the incredible story of the world-famous porter beer. Take it all in and before you know it, you’ll find yourself seven stories up in the Gravity Bar with a panoramic view of Dublin and beyond whilst enjoying a complimentary pint of the “Black Stuff”.

When you travel to Dublin make sure to check out one of the city's newest and most popular museums  - EPIC by name and epic by nature. The Irish emigration museum has been named Europe's Leading Tourist Attraction by the World Travel Awards for three years in a row. Everyone is a little bit Irish (right?) and so there’s something to interest every visitor.

Spend time exploring Trinity College and its stunning Georgian Quarter campus. Student-led tours are available and here, in the Old Library building you’ll find the world’s holiest relic, The Book of Kells. It’s a must-see cultural artefact but as only one page gets turned a week, you’d need to hang around for seven years to see it all! A little further south but still in the Georgian Quarter you’ll find Merrion Square – a little oasis in the busy city. Grab a coffee and find a spot to relax, taking your lead from the reclining Oscar Wilde statue. On Sundays, you can browse the incredible contemporary art hung around the park’s railings. 

One of Dublin’s two cathedrals, Christ Church has been a place of pilgrimage for nearly 1,000 years. It’s one of the city’s oldest buildings, home to a 12th century crypt and, if you time it right, you can even catch a concert here. 

If you’re visiting to get your city fix, you’ll find it on Grafton Street. One of the most visited streets in Ireland, it’s alive with street performers, sellers and, of course, the buskers! This is Dublin’s high street and where you’ll find all the big brands along with some local favourites – Bewley’s Café has been here for almost 100 years. We can heartily recommend the breakfast!

On the city’s northside is the Phoenix Park, Europe’s largest enclosed urban park and home to everything from the US Ambassador’s residence to regular polo matches. This is where you’ll also find Dublin Zoo, one of the world’s oldest and most popular zoos and Ireland’s most popular family attraction.

If you’ve got the car or like a scenic walk, you just can’t miss the Wicklow Mountains. They’re on Dublin’s doorstep and are your gateway to Wicklow, the garden of Ireland. It all makes for an incredible car-cation.

It’s off season but we got a gorgeous sunny late afternoon voyage and an up-close view of the island, birds, and seals. They clearly love this place and it shows. Endless cruise set to tour the world – and it'll always be summer

U nder a blazing blue sky in the legendary Harland & Wolff shipyard in Northern Ireland, where the Titanic was once built, the modestly sized Villa Vie Odyssey sits in dry dock, dwarfed by the huge 12-deck Caribbean party boat that looms beside it.

But when it sets sail on May 30, after intense refurbishment and cosmetic work, this 31-year-old ship will be one of the hottest new innovations in the cruise industry. It will be one of only two residential cruise ships in operation – and its world tour will have successfully launched where others have very dramatically failed.

Around 300 passengers – or "residents" – will be on board to start the voyage from Belfast which will visit 425 ports in 147 countries across all seven continents, circumnavigating the globe every three-and-a-half years.

For this is to be a cruise without end, where passengers can choose between pay-as-you-go and ownership options, spending as little as 35 days or the whole of their natural life on board, with the ship itself being replaced around every 15 years.

1,301 days of summer

The relatively small size of the 924-capacity vessel means it's capable of docking in the heart of destinations, with port stays ranging from a leisurely two to seven days, rather than the typical "hit and run" cruise ship approach. These long-term cruise residents do, after all, have all the time in the world.

The global itinerary , broken down into 16 "segments" over 1,301 days, has been carefully designed so that it catches the spring-summer seasons in both the northern and summer hemisphere. Residents, if they so choose, may never feel the winter chill again.

There's no commitment to stay on board for the full three and a half years, or to get off when that's over. Residents can pick and choose between segments as they like. South America is the most popular part and the transatlantic section the least, Villa Vie Residences CEO Mikael Petterson told the dry dock press tour Sunday.

Learning from the past

Takeup has been high. Of the 295 cabins available at launch, 270 have been sold, with some residents choosing to join later in the voyage. Petterson expects all cabins to be fully booked by the end of the Northern European segment, which ends in August, and more will be opened up during segment two, which is Greenland to Miami.

"We have a significant amount of people that want to come and see the ship themselves before committing, for obvious reasons," says Petterson. It's been a long journey to this upcoming launch and this is not the first venture of its kind.

In November 2023, Life at Sea Cruises canceled its three-year voyage shortly before departure, having not secured a ship, leaving passengers stranded and pursuing refunds of tens of thousands of dollars.

Villa Vie was started by Petterson and other former members of the Life at Sea executive team who quit when the original team split in May 2022. He says they've been able to learn from the mistakes of those who've gone before.

Conservative option

The ship now known as Villa Vie Odyssey was constructed in 1993 and – as the 495-cabin MS Braemar – was purchased from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines last year for $13 million. A further $12 million has been spent on the refurb and getting it fully recertified and up to standard.

"At $25 million all in, it's less than half of what anyone else has been trying," says Pettersen. "The ship is much cheaper, the financing is in place, the equity's in place, the sales are more than twice what Life at Sea had, so we're just in a completely different position."

The reason the team chose this conservatively sized and priced vessel is "because we wanted to make sure we could pull it through," he says. "The challenge has all been with the technical and getting her from asleep to awake. We're largely there. We're moving onto the hotel and that's the easy bit," he laughs.

The boat is wearing its age well and it's not all been an uphill struggle. In 2009, it was enlarged during a refurb, and was renovated again in 2019, with many of the public areas getting a stylish new face.

"A lot of these spaces were only in service for four months since they were last revitalized, so we haven't had to do anything to them," explains Pettersen. There are plans to keep updating spaces after launch, too – like a lived-in home rather than an off-the-peg hotel.

Under $33,000 a year

As the Odyssey, the ship will have eight decks, a wraparound promenade and an enlarged pool – combining the Braemar's two, so that passengers can swim laps. And when that feels too energetic, there are two Jacuzzis to lounge in.

There will be three restaurants, five bars and lounges, a spa, a fitness center, a library and a medical center. Then there's the spacious business center with sea views, internet from Starlink and Viasat 3, and an "interactive culinary center" for those missing the kitchen, as well as for cooking classes.

There will also be a golf program with a simulator on board and outings to greens around the world.

It's also surprisingly affordable, as round-the-world cruise experiences go. Over on megayacht The World – the other residential cruise ship – prices start at $2 million a year. But on Villa Vie Odyssey, an annual rental works out at less than $32,485, while a three-year stint will set you back $97,455.

An inside cabin is $89 per person per day, outside cabins start at $119 per person per day, and balconies at $199. All food and soft drinks are included, plus alcohol at dinner, as well as Wi-Fi and medical visits (but not procedures or medicines). There'll also be 24/7 room service, weekly housekeeping and bi-weekly laundry service at no extra cost.

Endless Horizons

Meanwhile, buying entails paying outright for a cabin – starting at $99,000 for an internal one, $149,000 for an outdoor and $249,000 for a balcony. Owners must then pay monthly fees starting at $1,750 per person, $2,500 per person, or $4,000 per person respectively – or $21,000, $30,000 or $48,000 per year.

Owners can then rent it out to other people themselves (for no charge) or through Villa Vie for a fee.

Those buying a cabin will be guaranteed it for 15 years, which is the estimated life of the ship. And then there's the newly introduced Endless Horizons program, where residents make a one-time payment of ​​$299,000 for lifetime access to a cabin, transferring ships when the cruise does.

Prices are based on double occupancy. Solo travelers get discounts of 30% for an internal cabin, 20% for an outside one and 10% for a balcony.

There are also a lot more solo travelers than one might expect on a typical vacation cruise – 50% of this first takeup are single. In the under-40s range, there are a lot more single male travelers than female, but post-retirement age, there are more women. The average age of traveler is 58 and 80% are from the United States, with Canadians being the next biggest group.

Floating community

A few of them are on board during the dry dock tour, such as John and Melody Hennessee, flamboyantly coordinated in hats and vests. They've made headlines around the world for selling their worldly goods to live on cruise ships for the rest of their lives, and they were there Sunday to plan out their triple-cabin with the team.

As these are people's homes, there are generous customization options afforded to residents, with requests accommodated where possible. There are a small number of large suites available to the ritziest of passengers – the biggest has a price tag of $900,000.

New Zealand couple Mark and Katrina Howard, in hard hats to get their first look at their home for the next three and a half years, have no problem with the downsizing requiring to fit their belongings into a two-person cabin. "We've done motor-homing," says Katrina.

As for cruise ships, "we met on one in 1994, out of Auckland," she says, and now "we'll be celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary on board" Villa Vie Odyssey.

It's just one of the many celebrations, landmark moments and life-changing events that are set to take place among this floating community of strangers who are about to become close and near-permanent neighbors. Whatever waves or storms lie ahead, the summer-led itinerary ensures the sun will largely be shining.

BRUNSWICK-TOPSHAM 9 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from Topsham Town Hall, pauses for observances while crossing the Brunswick-Topsham bridge, and concludes at the Brunswick Mall.

CAPE ELIZABETH 9 a.m. Monday. Parade begins at the middle school parking lot, turns right on Scott Dyer Road, right onto Route 77 and ends at the village green adjacent to the town hall. A brief ceremony and laying of the wreath will be held at the Village Green after the parade.

CUMBERLAND 8 a.m. Monday. Kids run at Greely High School followed by 5K Run and Remember race at 8:30 a.m. Parade starts at 10 a.m. at Mabel I. Wilson School and ends at the veterans’ monument in Moss Side Cemetery in Cumberland Center, where a ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. Advertisement

FALMOUTH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds from 65 Depot Road (Falmouth American Legion) to Pine Grove Park, where a ceremony will be held.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 1 p.m. Monday. Parade starts at the corner of Ballpark Way and E. Emerson Cumming Boulevard and proceeds down Saco Avenue, Old Orchard Beach Street to First Street and ends at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

PORTLAND 2 p.m. Monday. The procession starts at Longfellow School (432 Stevens Ave.) and ends at Evergreen Cemetery for a commemoration ceremony.

SANFORD 10 a.m. Monday. The parade starts at the Sanford Armory (88 William Oscar Emery Drive), proceeds up Gowen Park Drive and ends at Central Park.

SCARBOROUGH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Scarborough High School, turns onto Route 114 and then Route 1, past town offices to the Maine Veterans Home and concludes with a ceremony there.

SOUTH PORTLAND 10:30 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Southern Maine Community College parking lot, proceeds down Broadway to the Veterans Monument for a short Memorial Day recognition service.

WELLS 9 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Wells High School (200 Sanford Road) and proceeds to Ocean View Cemetery for a ceremony and musical performances. Advertisement

WESTBROOK 10 a.m. Monday. Parade proceeds down Main Street and will be followed by a ceremony in Riverbank Park.

WINDHAM 9 a.m. Monday. Parade starts at Windham Town Hall and proceeds onto Route 202 toward Windham High School. At 10 a.m., there will be a ceremony in front of Windham’s Veterans Memorial Flagpole at Windham High School.

YARMOUTH 10 a.m. Monday. Parade leaves from Yarmouth High School (286 West Elm St.) and proceeds to the Memorial Green at Town Hall for a ceremony.

YORK 10 a.m. Monday. Parade starts near St. Christopher’s Church (4 Barrell Lane) and proceeds down York Street to York Town Hall.
