Top things to do in Buena Vista, CO

March 5, 2023 By //  by  Marie Wilson

Located just two and a half hours southwest of Denver, the small town of Buena Vista is located in Colorado’s south-central region. Situated between the towering Collegiate Peaks and the flowing Arkansas River, it is best known for its whitewater rafting, hiking, mountain biking, and camping.

Combined with its approachable lifestyle, Buena Vista is a top destination for those visiting Colorado. Begin your Colorado mountain experience with these things to do in Buena Vista.

Year-round Activities

No matter what time of year you choose to visit Buena Vista, there are plenty of activities to get your adrenaline pumping and your body relaxed. From soaking in hot springs to mountain biking in the high country discover these year-round activities in Buena Vista.

Soak in a Hot Springs

image of mount princeton hot springs

Whether it’s a cool summer’s evening gazing at the star-filled sky above or a snowy winter’s day, the hot springs in Buena Vista will be sure to warm you up. Nestled in the Collegiate Peaks, lie both Cottonwood Hot Springs and Mount Princeton Hot Springs.

Both locations offer cabins, spa treatments, dining, as well as deep pools of various temperatures for soaking and swimming. Mount Princeton Hot Springs is the largest featuring six separate pools, along with a cold plunge, and a 400-foot water slide.

Biking with Altitude

Like much of Colorado, Buena Vista is full of mountain biking terrain. County roads between Buena Vista and Salida provide a popular 24-mile bike route.

Those looking for the challenge, tackle the mountain passes of Cottonwood, Poncha, Monarch, and Independence. Other well-known routes in the Buena Vista trail system include Lower Gentleman’s Loop and Barbara Whipple Figure Eight.

While mountain biking is a popular activity, warmer months are also a superb time for road cycling. Starting from Buena Vista, riders can test their level of fitness by heading up Cottonwood Pass or to Mount Princeton and the Nathrop Loop.

But biking in Buena Vista is a year-round sport despite the winter snowfall, all thanks to fat biking. Ride up Cottonwood Pass on a fat bike, avoiding cars and trucks thanks to the closed winter roads. Explore the trails and take in the snowy views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.

Fishing in the Arkansas River

image of fishing browns canyon

Fishing along the Arkansas River is the perfect year-round activity. The Gold Medal waters of the river are abundant with a variety of fish. For the best chance of catching a fish and to help avoid the hot summer sun, fishing in the summer is best done in the early hours of the morning or in the late afternoon.

Late winter and early spring are when trout flourish in the river throughout the day. However, the best time to fish for trout during the cold winter months is usually in the early afternoon. Try your luck along the Arkansas River or book a guided tour to discover the best spots along the pristine waters.

Trail Running for a challenge

image of trail runner

Colorado is home to some of the best running trails on the planet, and Buena Vista is no exception. From downtown, trials lead up Midland Hill, Triad Ridge, and Bald Mountain just to the south.

Many other trails pass through the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness that lies to the northwest of the city. Here trail runners can explore Huron Peak, Lost Lake, Cottonwood Pass, Turret Trail, and Horn Fork Basin.

Nearly every hiking trail in the region can be turned into a running one, making for fast exploration through the mountains. While trail running is far more popular during the summer months, microspikes allow runners to explore many of the trails year-round.

Summer Activities

Resting on the shores of the Arkansas River and in the shadows of the Collegiate Peaks, Buena Vista in the summer commanders visitors with its abundance of outdoor activities.

Hiking and Camping in the Collegiate Peaks and Beyond

image of collegiate peaks

Around every corner of Buena Vista is beaming with chances to go for a hike or pitch a tent. To the west lies the Collegiate Peak Wilderness as well as the Buffalo Peak Wilderness to the north. Choose your own adventure with camping and hiking along Cottonwood Pass or test your mountaineering skills and hike the 14ers of the Collegiate Peaks – Mount Harvard, Mount Yale, and six others.

For less of a challenge, pick a hike that begins from in town. The Midland Hill Trail, Barbara Whipple Loop, Half Gentleman’s Loop, and the Fistful of Dollars Trail are great places to start. For more of a day hike, try Harvard Lakes Trail or the Kroenke Lake Trail.

When it comes to easily accessible campgrounds, many are situated just north of town along the Arkansas River; Arkansas River Rim Campground, Turtle Rock Campground, and Arrowhead Point Camping Resort, just to name a few. Or drive along Cottonwood Pass and find a dispersed camping spot for free.

Rafting the Arkansas River

Located along the Arkansas River, Buena Vista affords plenty of opportunities to experience some of the nation’s best whitewater rafting. Experience Browns Canyon with a wide range of rapids, from class II up to class V, ensuring there is a route for all skill levels. There are numerous rafting companies located within the city, with trips running from late spring to early fall.

image of buena vista river park

Whether you hit the rapids yourself or are there to watch, be sure to check out the Buena Vista River Park . Located on the Arkansas River, near the new South Main Street, the park features manmade rapid structures for those looking for a challenge. If you’re an experienced rafter or kayaker, bring your own gear to test your limits amongst the famous rapids.

Summer Fun at the Clear Creek Reservoir

image of Clear Creek Reservoir

Just north of Buena Vista lies the Clear Creek Reservoir . In the summer, the water offers opportunities for fishing, boating, and even swimming. Trails lead around much of the lake, with others extending westward towards Mount Belford and Mount Harvard.

A large campground is situated next to the lake, offering room for both RV and tent camping. Further down RD 390 lies numerous ghost towns to explore by car including Vicksburg, Rockdale, and Winfield.

Climbing to New Heights

Buena Vista is a haven for rock climbers with its 460+ different climbing routes including trad, sport, and bouldering climbs. Much of the rock surrounding the city is quite solid, allowing for excellent summer climbing conditions.

Popular climbs such as Elephant Rock and Bob’s Rock are nestled within the Fourmile area, which features various other routes as well. For accessible bouldering routes near downtown, check out Midland Hill.

Explore the Trails by Horseback

A common way to explore the Buena Vista trails is by horseback. There are designated horse trails throughout the surrounding mountains and numerous companies that offer guided tours. These tours can range from a short one trip to a multi-day trek to some of the nearby summits.

Heart-pounding Off-Road & Jeeping Adventures

image of road tincup pass

Buena Vista offers trails and roads for nearly all types of off-roading. Dirt bike trails, four-wheelers, and Jeeps can explore the rugged roads, leading to some of the best viewpoints in the area.

Popular routes include Buena Vista to Tincup , Chinaman Gulch, Fourmile Area Trail, Lenhardy Cutoff, and Bald Mountain. Note that some of these trails are also used by hikers or mountain bikers, so drivers should be aware.

Along the 4×4 route from Buena Vista to Tincup Pass, be sure to stop at the quaint town of Saint Elmo . The town was originally settled back in the 1880s during the gold rush and had an estimated population of about 2,000 people.

After the mining industry of the region was shut down, much of the population left the small city. Today the city is one of the best-preserved ghost towns in the state, though it still functions with a general store and a gas station.

Winter Activities

From snowshoeing to snowmobiling, there is a heart-pounding experience for anyone. Continue your outdoor adventures with these things to do in winter in Buena Vista.

A Winter Wonderland for Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Skiing

image of snowshoeing

Head up Cottonwood Pass for your winter exploration. While closed in the winter, the pass is plowed far enough to quickly access the high country for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Many snowmobilers explore this area as well, allowing cross-country skiers to follow in their pathways.

Just south of the city lies Browns Creek . This area offers flatter terrain than Cottonwood Pass, making it ideal for both snowshoers and cross-country skiers of any skill level. The abandoned railroads amongst the ghost town of Saint Elmo allow for even more cross-country trails.

Thrilling Snowmobiling Rides

image of snowmobiling

Hundreds of miles of backcountry trails surround the city of Buena Vista, making for a snowmobiling paradise. The Buena Vista SnowDrifters is a local snowmobile club that works to ensure that there are groomed trails within the backcountry.

These trails offer the perfect gateway into the world of snowmobiling, great for beginners and experts alike. For those looking to experience the deep powder that coats the mountains, there are seemingly countless trails of varying difficulties.

Explore on your own snowmobile, or rent one with a guided tour to discover the best local spots. Guided tours can range from a short half-day to a multi-day excursion of some of the best snowmobiling in the state. Danny Creek Trailhead and Avalanche Trailhead are both a short drive from downtown Buena Vista, offering a quick entrance into the backcountry.

Kick start your outdoor adventures with these things to do in Buena Vista, no matter what time of year!

This Small Colorado Town Is Big on Outdoor Adventure — With Hot Springs, River Rafting, and Mountain Views

The positively charming Colorado town of Buena Vista is an outdoor lover’s dream.

trip & co bv

Buena Vista, Colorado more than lives up to its name. The positively tiny and utterly charming small town, located just over a two-hour drive south of Denver, is an outdoor lover’s dream. Its verdant valleys, mountain peaks, and flowing rivers make it an ideal spot to escape the grind in exchange for some time with Mother Nature. Here’s what you need to know to plan a trip to this delightful community that certainly has more than its fair share of good views.

Matt Inden/Miles/Visit Colorado

When to Visit Buena Vista, Colorado

As a semi-arid region in Colorado, the temperatures in Buena Vista can swing wildly throughout the year. According to WeatherSpark , its summer season lasts from early June to mid-September, when the average daily temperature hits about 70°F. Those looking to really feel the heat should visit in July when the daily average temperature hits 79°F. In contrast, Buena Vista’s winters can get downright bitter. The town’s cold season lasts from late November to March when the average high only hits 45°F. That said, the cold season can be a rather good time to visit for snow-filled adventures, including dog sledding, snowmobiling, and skiing at nearby mountains .

Things to Do in Buena Vista, Colorado

Relax in the hot springs..

Visitors to Buena Vista can unwind at Cottonwood Hot Springs Inn & Spa , both a lodging option and a public hot spring destination. The waters here hover between a warm 94°F to a toasty 110°F. The inn opens its various springs for soaking every day between 8 a.m. for the early birds to midnight for the night owls. Visitors can also make use of the inn’s dry saunas for the full experience.

Take a hike.

Buena Vista has plenty of gorgeous outdoor places to explore, with miles of hiking trails all around. Those looking to experience the best can make their way up Huron Peak via North Huron Trail , the top-rated hike in the region according to AllTrails. The 6.5-mile out-and-back hike can be a challenging one, but those who take their time and get to the top will be rewarded with views of emerald green trees, glittering lakes, and rolling hills that disappear into the horizon. However, this is far from the only hiking option nearby. Those looking for shorter hikes or different views have plenty of options .

Paddle the rapids.

The town sits along the Arkansas River, providing visitors with plenty of opportunities to get on the water for a little rafting fun. Everyone from first-timers to seasoned pros can go on a guided journey with outfitters like Kodi , which takes guests on everything from half-day trips to Browns Canyon National Monument to overnight trips to combine the best of rafting and camping.

And in the winter, hit the mountains.

Those planning a visit to Buena Vista in the winter months can enjoy plenty of outdoor time by visiting one of the nearby mountains. Choose an equally charming spot like Monarch Mountain , which comes with 800 skiable acres across 59 trails located just a 40-minute drive outside of town.

Where to Stay in Buena Vista, Colorado

Find yourself in the heart of town with a stay at The Inn , a 13-room boutique hotel housed inside a refurbished building from the 1800s. Each room has its own unique flare thanks to a mix of modern and antique decor, while its oak floors and 100-year-old brick walls remind you of its storied past.

Cottonwood Hot Springs Inn & Spa

Can’t get enough of those hot springs? Book a few nights at the Cottonwood Hot Springs Inn & Spa . Guests can choose to book its private rooms or go no-frills by staying in its dorms. But again, the star of the show here is the hot springs, and by staying on-site, guests have easy access to their favorite soaking spot.

Good View Campground

Buena Vista’s natural landscapes are just too inviting to want to leave. If you simply cannot part with the great outdoors, even for a moment, then book a few nights at the Good View Campground . The riverside spot has potable well water and port-o-potties available, and it's also a perfect spot to watch stunning sunrises and sunsets.

Find another lovely boutique accommodation at the Surf Hotel . The high-design spot comes with chic rooms with fluffy white beds set off by rich, forest-green walls. The hotel also has an in-house restaurant, Wesley & Rose, serving everything from fresh salads to Colorado lamb pops.

The Best Things to Do in Buena Vista, Colorado

The Collegiate Peaks—Mount Princeton, Mount Yale, and Mount Harvard. The Arkansas River. A downtown full of shops and restaurants. And endless outdoor adventure. Buena Vista, Colorado is a special place. And a scenic drive in the heart of the Rocky Mountains is sure to be a day to remember.

Visit Buena Vista And you’ll find no shortage of views.

arkansas river

This small mountain town seems to have a good view everywhere you turn. From downtown Buena Vista to your adventures hiking, biking, and rafting, this is one of the most beautiful places to explore in the United States!

Where is Buena Vista, Colorado?

Buena Vista is located in the middle of Colorado, southwest of Denver (2.5 hours) and directly west of Colorado Springs (under 2 hours.) The small, laid-back mountain town is home to roughly 2,800 people. And it’s nestled into the San Isabel National Forest right along the Arkansas River with views of the Sawatch Range Mountains.

So, what should you do when you spend a day (or weekend) here? Use this list of the best things to do in Buena Vista, Colorado and you will not be disappointed…

Buena Vista Roastery Cafe

Get your day started in the best way with Buena Vista Roastery Cafe . Located right in the heart of Buena Vista, this coffee shop is a cool hangout spot that serves delicious coffee (100% organic, fair trade) and light food and baked goods. My favorite part was their outdoor space where you could feel the energy of this cute mountain town while enjoying the fresh air.

My Iced Vanilla Latte didn’t last too long—it was delicious!

Buena Vista River Park

One of the best things about Buena Vista is its beauty. And you will get that in full force when you visit Buena Vista River Park which is on the banks of the Arkansas River. This area is perfect for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding, so pick your favorite outdoor activity and make sure this spot is on your list.

We spent a few hours hiking and not only are the mountain views something to see but watching (and listening to!) the river flowing is a highlight of our day trip. There are hiking and biking trails no matter what your skill level is and many trails intertwine to easily create your own path.

We ended up on the Bridge-to-Bridge trail which was super easy but we enjoyed it. Use this trail map to see what will work for you.

Buena Vista River Park

White Water Rafting

If you want to go white water rafting, Buena Vista is the ideal spot to do it! There are a ton of companies to choose from for your excursion, but we went with The Adventure Company and couldn’t have been happier with the experience. Great guide, clean facilities, and an epic adventure through Browns Canyon National Monument.

We did a half-day, Class III (intermediate) trip which is $95/person. It includes 2 hours on the water (9.5 miles) with an experienced guide, plus your paddles, and safety gear. Do plan for about 4 hours total with the inclusion of gearing up, bussing to/back from the river, and listening to a safety talk. Class III has its thrills, but it’s definitely manageable, even for beginners.

PRO TIP: Hit up Station 24 Cafe which is right next door for a quick breakfast burrito before you head out.

Buena Vista Whitewater Park

Another option is Buena Vista Whitewater Park which is the largest whitewater park in Colorado with 5 main whitewater structures for kayaking and rafting, plus climbing walls & trails.

The Olive Mediterranean Food Truck

This cute food truck reeled us in with its string lights, picnic tables, and bright green truck right in the middle of town . A sucker for a gyro, we stopped here to split one and curb our hunger before some other stops.

And let me tell ya, we were not disappointed! The classic gyro was so fresh with delicious lamb meat and veggies, plus their homemade tzatziki sauce that made it next-level YUM. If you’re walking around Buena Vista, definitely stop here for lunch.

The Olive Mediterranean Food Truck

Buena Vista Shopping

There are some great shops along Main St to visit while you are in Buena Vista! A few of my favorites:

  • Once Upon a Trapeze : You know I love a good bookstore.
  • Little Elk Trading Company : Beautiful, hand-crafted wood furniture. I didn’t buy anything but it’s remarkable to see what people are able to create.
  • CKS Main Street: A kayak rental shop that also offers tons of fun gear to buy.
  • The Mercantile : Fun goods for your home.
  • Intentions Spa : Quality beauty products with only the best, natural ingredients. (I bought a brown sugar exfoliator and absolutely love it.)

trip & co bv

The Slammer Saloon

Post-shopping beers anyone? This is a great place to come throw a few back in an upbeat environment. It’s got a cool Western aesthetic inside (the old BV jailhouse) and a lively outdoor patio. The Slammer Saloon offers plenty of craft beers and a huge selection (100+) of whiskeys served by fun bartenders.

We had so much fun here talking to the bartender, meeting other visitors, and trying different whiskeys and beers. I highly recommend a stop—easily one of the best things to do in Buena Vista!

the slammer saloon

Eddyline Brewery & Taproom

If you’re a brewery-lover, Eddyline Brewery & Taproom is one of the best places to grab beers in Buena Vista. Plus, they have great pizza and other bar bites as well. Located on Linderman Ave., just off of South Main Street, you can find a spot in their small bar area with handcrafted tables and local art hanging around you.

House Rock Kitchen

This is an order-at-the-counter, quick-service food option that offers high-quality ingredients and made-from-scratch meals. Located right along E Main St, they focus on healthy options and you can grab sandwiches, burritos, burgers, soups, and bowls. There is also a full-service bar.

Outside of the ordering experience, House Rock Kitchen looks like your typical restaurant with indoor seating as well as an outdoor patio space that includes games—and plenty of mountain views!

We split the Chicken Pesto Sandwich (bacon, brie, pickled red onion & pumpkin pesto aioli) and the Chips & Guacamole. Everything was good and you could tell the ingredients were high-quality.

Deerhammer Distillery

Craving a delicious cocktail? One of my favorite spots is Deerhammer Distillery . Located on East Main Street, stop in here for a delicious drink and something to eat from the food truck. They have a great outdoor space that’s usually lively and full of life!

Deerhammer Distillery is known for its whiskey and offers a few different Old Fashions. I stay away from whiskey, so if that’s not your thing either, try a BVs Knees made with their gin. It’s delightful!

deerhammer distillery

Louie’s Ice Cream Shop

A day spent in a quaint, small mountain town better include some ice cream, right!? And at Louie’s Ice Cream Shop , not only are you going to get quality ice cream in unique flavors, but you will get to enjoy it on their beautiful outdoor patio! Plus, it’s worth noting that they are rated “the best frozen dessert in Buena Vista!”

louies ice cream

Jumpin’ Good Goat Dairy

While we’re on the dairy train, let’s talk CHEESE. Jumpin’ Good Goat Dairy is a small artisan goat cheese producer right off US-24 (north of downtown.) Enter a small, welcoming general store and find yourself a variety of high-quality cheeses, as well as meats, crackers, salsas, and merch.

We, unfortunately, did not make it here during our trip but it is certainly on my list for next time! Who doesn’t want fresh goat cheese curds for a road trip snack!?

Buena Vista Heritage Museum

If you are looking for a bit of history on this small mountain town, visit the Buena Vista Heritage Museum which is located inside the old Chaffee County Courthouse. It’s home to many fun and family-friendly exhibits which you can explore yourself or book a guided tour. And keep your eyes peeled in the summer months because there are often events going on.

Buena Vista Heritage Museum

Cottonwood Hot Springs Inn

When you’re deep into the mountains, you’ve gotta get a soak in some local hot springs! Cottonwood Hot Springs Inn & Spa offers 5 different natural water soaking tubs. Temperatures range from 80 (cold tub) to 104 degrees. The waters are full of minerals and it’s a place to relax and let your body heal. It’s $24 per adult on the weekend.

Full disclosure: this was our first hot springs experience. You hear ALL about them in Colorado so I sought this out before our day trip to Buena Vista. It felt AMAZING in the tubs. We started off super hot and then moved down to something more comfortable. But I will say, the amenities outside of the tubs are less than ideal, mainly the bathroom/changing area which was not clean. And the resort has more of a motel vibe than a “resort.”

Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort

If we go back, I’d like to try Mount Princeton Hot Springs Resort . Their hot springs are $40 for an adult (on a weekend) and give you access to Historic Bath House, Creekside Hot Springs, Upper Pools & Infinity Pool. When we make it here someday, I’ll update my post!

Collegiate Peaks Golf Course

If you want to golf in the mountains with some great views, here is your chance! Right at the base of 14ers (peaks over 14,000 ft.), Collegiate Peaks Golf Course is one you will want to experience.

Plus, it’s affordable! It’s $50 for an adult on the weekend and $45 Monday-Thursday. Play a round and then sit outside for food and drinks.

Last Updated on May 31, 2023 by foxintheforest

Most locals will agree – Buena Vista is one fantastic Colorado mountain town . Nestled at the base of the mighty Sawatch range, there are plenty of awesome things to do in Buena Vista.

From delicious eateries to mighty mountain hikes, Buena Vista (pronounced “Bew-na Vista”) has a wide range of awesome activities for any kind of adventurer.

From rafting or fly fishing along the Arkansas to relaxing at one of Colorado’s best hot springs , you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to things to do in Buena Vista.

I take at least three trips out this way a year. Located just 2 hours and 15 minutes from Denver, Buena Vista is one of the most amazing weekend getaways from Denver .

Easy access to camping, hiking, and getting outside make this a pristine place to spend a day (or three).

I’ve lived in Colorado for the past 12 years. I’ve literally stopped counting how many times I’ve visited Buena Vista. For me, it’s an awesome way to spend a weekend out in the heart of the mountains.

As an outdoor writer, I’ve literally been paid to scour Colorado’s best mountain towns for epic, local adventures. It’s been my mission to bring you the best things to do in Buena Vista and Colorado at large so you can travel like a local, not a tourist.

About this Guide to Things to Do in Buena Vista, Colorado

Inside this guide to things to do in Buena Vista, Colorado you’ll get expert advice and pro tips for enjoying this magical mountain town. Learn how to beat the crowds and find your own slice of mountain paradise.

Inside you’ll find:

things to do in buena vista

How Many Days Should I Spend in Buena Vista?

Although Buena Vista can be done as a day trip from Denver , since it’s one of the best Colorado road trip stops , you’ll likely want to at least spend the weekend here.

Two nights gives you one full day, plus some time for additional activities the day you leave. Since this is one of the most amazing Colorado getaway destinations , three nights will give you a real feel for the whole area and allow you to really experience Buena Vista.

However, if you’re short on time, an overnight plus a full day is an easy add to any Colorado road trip itinerary or as a quick weekend away from Denver.

When is the Best Time to Visit Buena Vista?

Summer is undoubtedly the best time to visit Buena Vista, since most of the dirt roads are open and the wildflowers are blooming. However, this is also the most crowded time to visit BV.

Fall is another excellent time to visit, since Buena Vista is home to some of the best fall hikes in Colorado . However, you’ll still have large crowds during the peak leaf-peeping season (mid-September).

October and November are cold, but still a great time to visit if you want to ditch the crowds.

Winters are cold (and often windy) but the scenery is charming. If you aren’t camping and you want to cozy up in a cabin and soak in the hot springs, then winter is your jam.

Spring weather tends to be muddy, unpredictable, and snowy. It’s not the best time to come and visit BV, but if you want the place to yourself then spring is it.

Local Tip : The traffic on 285 and I-70 get REAL during the summer and even more crowded for fall. Plan accordingly. Leaving earlier will always help you steer clear of traffic.

The Most Amazing Things to Do in Buena Vista

Ready to soak up all that mountain magic? Check out the local list of the best things to do in Buena Vista.

Conquer a Colorado Fourteener

The Sawatch Range has the highest concentration of 14,000-plus-foot peaks, which makes Buena Vista a premier mountain town for adventurous folks who want to try their luck at a Colorado 14er.

If you’re new to summiting 14ers, a great choice to get your badge is by giving Huron Peak a try – it’s one of the easiest Colorado 14ers and a stunning out-and-back trail which will have you hiking through vast forests, streams, and uphill switchbacks.

Things to do in Buena Vista, Colorado

A must-do fourteener is Mount Elbert. Standing high at 14,440 feet, Mount Elbert is the highest point in Colorado. Bagging this peak is one of the best things to do in Buena Vista for those who don’t mind a challenge.

The reward for making it to the top? The most epic vistas of the Sawatch Range as well as getting to stand high above all the other peaks in the state.

Local tip: Start very early in the morning as thunderstorms roll in during the afternoons, especially around the summertime.

Spend Your Days in the Wilderness of the Colorado Trail

Backpacking in Colorado should be on everyone’s bucket list, and Buena Vista offers one of the most picturesque trails in the state. The Colorado Trail is a 486-mile antic that traverses eight mountain ranges and six different wilderness areas.

To backpack the entire trail end to end (Denver to Durango), you will need at least four weeks to spare, but you can also choose a section if you’re not necessarily super keen to spend that long in the wild and want to enjoy one of the best hikes in Buena Vista .

The trail is pretty easy to follow, with markings all over (but you’ll still want to bring a map, just in case). Moreover, a permit to backpack the trail is not required, and other than Waterton Canyon, there are basically no restrictions on camping, wahoo!

Get Adventurous and Try Free Camping

The entire area surrounding the Sawatch Mountain Range (Buena Vista, Salida, and Twin Lakes) is the perfect camping playground if you’re keen to rough it up and enjoy some of the most scenic and totally free camping spots near Denver . Not only does the fact that most of the land is publicly owned mean that you can set camp pretty much anywhere, but it’s also a prime spot for beautiful night skies that will only make your visit to Buena Vista a whole more special.

For free camping, all you have to do is drive down one of the many dirt roads in the area and find an established post. As usual, make sure you follow the Leave No Trace mantra. These free camping sites are usually first-come-first-serve and have virtually zero amenities, so make sure you come prepared for a night in the wilderness.

Recommended Campgrounds: Some of my favorite spots to set up camp near Buena Vista are Cottonwood Pass, Chaffee County Road 390, Winfield camping area, and Browns Creek.

Raft One of the Longest Rivers in the USA

Beat the heat and get your adrenaline pumping with some epic fun on the waters of the Arkansas River. Buena Vista’s Brown Canyon National Monument is famed for offering some of the best whitewater rafting in the entire world, and you’ll find some seriously top-tier options for both seasoned paddlers and families alike.

Go Fly Fishing at Twin Lakes

Home to large reservoirs, alpine lakes, and small streams, Buena Vista and its surrounding areas are considered some of the best spots in Colorado to go fishing. One of the must-visit locations for fly fishing enthusiasts is Twin Lakes, which is located at the base of Mount Albert and offers great opportunities to catch rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout with trophy lake potential.

Drive to Cottonwood Pass for the Most Gorgeous Vistas

Driving to the top of the dazzling Cottonwood Pass is one of the most scenic drives in Colorado . Take County Road 306 out of Buena Vista toward Almont to drive down the highest paved mountain route over the Continental Divide.

From Buena Vista, the road climbs over 12,000 feet to the summit and then winds down towards the incredibly scenic Taylor Park Reservoir.

The road is usually open from May through October and while it’s absolutely gorgeous during the summer, if you happen to be visiting during the falls, you’ll be treated to a spectacle of colorful Aspen groves.

Best things to do in Buena Vista

Go on a Biking Adventure

Buena Vista is considered a mecca in Colorado for bike trails and rides are literally located right out the door. While there’s an endless list of trails to choose from, one of the best ways to get you in gear is to drive 24-miles from Buena Vista to Salida.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, however, you can test your mountain biking skills with the Monarch Crest Trail, which will treat you to a variety of rides down once you reach the Crest. For the real deal, try the technical downhill from Monarch’s Crest via Green’s Creek Trail, which is steep singletrack and the ultimate challenge for technical riders who want to test their skills.

Enjoy the Local Eats

I don’t know about you, but aside from adventuring the outdoors, my other favorite thing to do is eat great food. Buena Vista is home to some seriously scrumptious local eats that you won’t be able to get enough of. To get you started with the menu, check out The Buena Vista Roastery Cafe, Eddyline Brewery, and Simple Eatery.

Explore the Area on a Hike

If conquering an advanced 14er isn’t exactly your goal, Buena Vista offers a number of beginner and intermediate hiking options, all of which come with gorgeous views of the Collegiate Peaks, beautiful alpine lakes (don’t miss out on Twin Lakes!), or the mighty Arkansas River.

Hiking is definitely one of the best things to do in Buena Vista if you really want to get close and personal with the mountains, so make sure to add at least one hike or two into your itinerary.

Local tip: Even though the trails are relatively easy, they can be challenging at first due to the high altitude so acclimatize properly . Make sure you stay hydrated throughout the journey and take it slow while hiking.

Relax Your Muscles in a Hot Spring

One of the best things to do in Buena Vista after exploring its mountain goodness is to soak in a hot spring to unwind after a day out in nature. Some of the can’t-miss hot springs are:

  • Cottonwood Hot Spring – Natural and historical when you consider they were first enjoyed by the Ute Indians. These hot springs are renowned for their therapeutic and medicinal properties, which makes them the perfect escape if you’re in dire need to relax your muscles after a long hike.
  • Mount Princeton Hot Springs in Nathrop – Located right between Salida and Buena Vista. It boasts some of the best hot springs in the locale. What makes the place so unique is that you can literally make your own pools in the river by stacking rocks.
  • Charlotte Hot Springs – A luxury resort offering a quiet retreat and perfect if you’d like an overnight escapade. It’s the ideal spot for couples or those looking for pet-friendly accommodation in Buena Vista.

If you time it right, you could also be there during PaddleFest, where they host river surfing, kayaking competitions, and concerts. If you miss PaddleFest, don’t worry; many other concerts come to the Surf Hotel.
  • VRBO – There are many in-town vacation rentals, more remote ones in the mountains or some by the river!
  • Camp – There are almost too many camping options! The one close to town is on 304 Road; you can look up Collegiate Peaks Scenic Overlook and then keep driving following the river until you find a spot you like. Most people who camp here come with their cars. Other options are in the Collegiate Peak campsites, like at the base camp for Harvard and Yale, Cottonwood Lake Campground, or Chalk Lake Campground.

Best Outdoor Activities In Buena Vista, Colorado

There are endless outdoor activities to do in Buena Vista! Rafting, river surfing, hiking, backpacking, fly fishing, rock climbing, mountain biking… choose your adventure. I listed my top five outdoor things to do and see in Buena Vista.

1) Raft the Arkansas River

As a raft guide at Noah’s Ark, I recommend Noah’s Ark for the best rafting experience. There are many companies, but Noah’s notably has the best customer service.

You can choose a half-day trip or a full-day trip. The half-day trip is Class II and III rapids, and the full-day trip is Class II, III, and IV (at certain water levels) plus lunch! Rafting on the Arkansas is an experience not to be missed; you get to see and raft Brown’s Canyon National Monument.

Brown’s Canyon is a stunning canyon full of wildlife and rock formations. When you’re done having the best time of your life, you can come back to Noah’s, chat with the welcoming staff, get your photos from the rapids, grab a coffee or pop-tart from Veya, and maybe even do the ropes course! Noah’s also offers guided fly fishing and backpacking trips.

2) Drive Cottonwood Pass

This is a stunning scenic drive from town to the top of the collegiate peaks, reaching the continental divide. I recommend going just before sunset, bringing a picnic (maybe from Sorelle’s!), and enjoying it beside the alpine lake at the top of the pass.

You can hike the continental divide from the pass, looking into the beautiful Rocky Mountains. If you go earlier in the day, you should hike Lost Lake along the way. It is a quick 1.5-2 hr hike to an alpine lake with an island in the middle; if you’re into cold plunges like my friends and I, you can jump in and swim to the island.

3) Try river surfing

River surfing was invented in the neighboring town of Salida, where the brand BadFish comes from. There are natural standing waves in Buena Vista and Salida, where you can try standing up on the mini surfboards. It’s super fun even if you don’t stand up!

You can rent boards in Salida or just hang around long enough in Buena Vista at the surf hole, and someone will offer you their board to try. Though you may wish you had a wetsuit. The Buena Vista surf hole is past the baseball field, towards the hiking trails (midland), but take a right after the Pump track.

4) Hiking in the Collegiate Peaks

Buena Vista is surrounded by a famous part of the Rocky Mountains called the Collegiate Peaks. They are famous because they have a ton of 14er’s 14,000ft mountains named after notable colleges like Princeton, Yale, Harvard, and Columbia.

You’ll find that many people are “collecting” peaks and trying to do all the 14ers in Colorado, and you’ll see them here. If you are a hiking nerd, you should attempt to peak one! My friends and I peaked at Columbia; the view was incredible. If you want to try, ensure you acclimate first for at least two days, and then get up early (like 3am) and start hiking. It can take between 5-10 hours.

Carry snacks along the way, tons of water, sunglasses, layers, raincoat (can you tell I was a backpacking guide), and a first aid kit. If you don’t want to peak a 14er, you can still go to the same trailheads and enjoy the stunning scenery, lakes, rivers, wildlife, wildflowers, and a view of the valleys.

5) Fly fishing

Fly fishing is very popular in Colorado and Arkansas, and nearby alpine lakes in Buena Vista offer quality fishing experiences. There are many guided fly fishing opportunities for those who have never fly-fished to well-seasoned pros.

Many guiding companies offer float trips along Arkansas for half-day or full-day, often including a meal. Plus, you get to experience the rapids as well! Many companies also provide walk-and-walk trips if you want a more feet-on-ground experience. Fly fishing in Buena Vista has stunning scenery and quality guides. If you like fishing, try it here, or if you’ve never tried it in Buena Vista!

Best Places To Get Coffee In Buena Vista

Buena Vista is full of coffee nerds, but these are the top three in Buena Vista!

  • My favorite Veya Co – This beautiful retro coffee truck makes quality espresso drinks, has killer homemade pop tarts, and lovely mint lemonade iced tea. I am biased; I worked at Noah’s Ark and would go to Veya nearly every day (as it is located on Noah’s Ark property). The coffee cart is run by Noah’s staff, Jack and Mary-Lou, who are the best people. Ever. But honestly, I tried all the coffee in town, and Veya just won! My go-to order is the Cortado with their homemade chili syrup.
  • Buena Vista Roastery Cafe – Locals call this Buena Vista staple “The Roast” on the main street. If you go early enough, you’ll find locals playing chess, and you may get one of their fantastic breakfast burritos. The Roast has quality drip coffee and a killer deal: drip coffee + burrito = $9. They also offer espresso drinks as well as freshly made pastries.
  • The Midland Stop – This incredible spot is across from the Surf Hotel in the “newer” part of town. Midland offers quality espresso, fantastic gelato, and breakfast options like burritos and pastries. You have to try their scones!

Best Places To Eat In Buena Vista

Most places in Buena Vista are Chipotle-style, walk in, order, and the food is brought to you. Be prepared to have long waits for dinner in Buena Vista. There are many great options for food, but these are the top three.

  • Buena Viking – The Viking started as a food truck but is opening a store location this year! This place has killer burgers and my personal favorite, tater tots. Go when you have enough time to wait in a long line, but know it’s worth the wait. While you wait, grab a great cocktail or mocktail from the window near the truck.
  • Wesley & Rose, in The Surf Hotel – Wesley & Rose has incredible food sourced from seasonal and local goods. Come to Wesley & Rose for a cocktail or wine while enjoying their small plates. My favorites are the lamb pops, parmesan fries, shrimp and polenta, and fried brussel sprouts. If you stay for dinner, get the pizza! My favorite pizza is the Salty Selby, which has the most mouthwatering flavor and slightly salted crust. If you’re at Welsey and Rose, you must get dessert; it’s just a must. Sometimes, I would just come for the fries and dessert. The carrot cake is incredible, but its other desserts are unique and often change according to the season.
  • Sorelles Delicatessen – This is a great lunch spot. Sorelle’s is run by two Italian Sisters who have created a great spot in Buena Vista. My go-to order is the classic Italian sandwich called the Sorelle Italian, followed by cannoli. Don’t miss the cannoli. Everything else is great too, the salads, pasta, and other desserts. They have a great patio where you can enjoy your meal.
  • Bird and Mouse Bakery – This spot is even a mystery to the locals due to its short opening hours, 7-11am, and only during the summers, but if you manage to find it, you will not forget it. This tiny home tucked away behind Loback’s Bakery serves incredible, unique pastries, cakes, breakfast sandwiches on homemade bagels or sourdough, and excellent drip coffee.
  • The Blend – A perfect breakfast or midday spot for a healthy and delicious pick-me-up. The Blend has incredible breakfast sandwiches, burritos, smoothies, and smoothie bowls. Additionally, they have great pastries and lunch options. Their coffee is fine, but there is nothing to write home about.

Best Bars In Buena Visita

  • The Terrace on Main – The Terrace is the only new rooftop bar in Buena Vista. It is a classy oasis with fireplaces, excellent customer service, live music, and great drinks and appetizers. I recommend their killer margarita, but they also have other cocktails, wine, and beer on tap. Splurge on their cheese board for the most beautiful experience; it is stunning and delicious!
  • The Surf Hotel – Back to Wesley and Rose for Buena Vista’s best cocktails, wine, and beer.
  • The Lariat – Live music, local crowd, pool, and drinks. I recommend going with your friends for a game of pool during local music nights. You can also find awesome bands coming to the Lariat, where you need a ticket. Their drinks are fine at best, but the crowd is worth the visit.

Other Things To Do In Buena Visita

  • Book Nook – This gem is tucked into the residential side of town because it is a bookstore in an old home. When you enter, you will be greeted by the very kind owner; she will offer you homemade cookies and coffee in the kitchen. Have the cookies, and then explore the books and trinkets! The book selection is pretty diverse and specializes in local authors, guides for animals, geography, activities in Colorado, and local history. Make your way to the back and walk through the garden to the garage with more books and maps.
  • Princeton Hot Springs – Most tourists will end up here, as they should; it’s fantastic! After a long day of rafting in the cold river, come here to find natural hot springs in the river. You can alternate between the cold parts of the river and the hot spots, or if you have no desire to be near the river again, you can use the hot or cold pools.
  • Salida – Visit the nearby town of Salida! Salida is slightly larger than Buena Vista and fun to visit for a day. Salida has excellent coffee and croissants at the Red Hen Bakery and other restaurants. It is also a great place to thrift in places like Ruby Blues.
  • Rodeo – During the summer, rodeos often occur once a month, either in Buena Vista or Salida. A rodeo is an excellent actual mountain town experience in Colorado. You may think rodeos belong to Texas, but Colorado has a long history of cattle farming and rodeos. Plus, you’ll find fun square and line dancing! Wear or buy a cowboy hat, put on a twirly dress, and have fun!
  • Pickleball – Recently, Buena Vista opened new pickleball courts! There are six courts open to the public at all times. Go pickle!! Pickleball is a passion for the locals, so make sure you don’t take their court, but besides that, you can often go and find people to play with when you get there.

Best Time To Visit Buena Vista

Summer! Most people think of visiting Colorado during the winter to ski or snowboard. Still, Buena Vista is a summer town as all the tourism and activities revolve around the river.

The weather is perfect: sunny days and cool evenings. And wildflower season is, conveniently, also during the summer. You can enjoy the beautiful flowers and the mountains as the snow melts off them in May, running into the river when rafting, surfing, and fishing begins.

A country road leading towards towering blue mountains in the distance

If I had to sit down and draw up my dream US road trip itinerary, I’d have a hell of a hard time ever leaving my home state of Colorado. I’m a hopeless skiing, hiking, camping, and outdoor addict, and I can’t imagine a better setting to fire up my camper van and start exploring.

Sure, I’ve spent most of my 30-something years here, and I’m a bit biased, but that doesn’t change the cold hard facts: Colorado is packed with rich history, easy-to-find adventure, and exceptional natural beauty. It’s an incredible place to set off on the open road.

A Local’s Ultimate 10-Day Colorado Road Trip Itinerary

Colorado Road Trip Map

Now, for the fun part.

Here’s the exact itinerary I would use if I had ten days to spend road-tripping around my home state. My route is quite ambitious — over 100 miles and about two hours of driving per day — so don’t be afraid to bend and tweak it to fit your style.

Buckle up and have fun out there.

Distance from Denver International Airport : 26 miles Driving Time : 45 minutes

A view from a helicopter of Denver, Colorado

I don’t consider myself much of a city boy, but if you witnessed me in my element in Denver , you might beg to differ. I never once grew bored of the place during my six years living in the Mile High City. The scores of restaurants, microbreweries, cafes, music venues, sports arenas, museums, and parks always seemed to keep me thoroughly entertained (for better or worse).

The impressive views of the Rocky Mountains beckoning on Denver’s horizon serve as a reminder that pristine wilderness is an easy escape.

You can’t road trip Colorado without spending some quality time in Denver; I won’t allow it.

Activities & Ideas Near Denver

  • Ogle over incredible marine life at the Downtown Denver Aquarium
  • Get tipsy on a brewery tour and sample some of Denver’s best beer
  • Relax and watch a baseball game at Coors Field , the home of the Colorado Rockies
  • Stroll down Larimer Square to enjoy the best of Denver’s food and drink scene
  • Dance to incredible live music at Dazzle , Denver’s oldest Jazz bar

Views of the flatirons at sunset of Boulder, Colorado

Some of my best childhood memories were when my parents drove my brother and me to Boulder to march up hiking trails and wander the Pearl Street Mall. These fond experiences eventually led me back to Boulder, where I spent six years socializing, exploring, and occasionally studying at the University of Colorado. Boulder and I go way back.

What I love most about Boulder is its proximity to nature. Mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, camping, fishing – it’s all within your backyard when Boulder’s your base camp. And much like Denver, Boulder has plenty of excellent food, nightlife, and cultural happenings to keep you busy as you pass through.

Activities & Ideas Near Boulder

  • Bask in the sun and enjoy an afternoon by the Boulder Creek at the lively Eben G Fine Park
  • Hike Nederland’s jaw-dropping 4th of July Trail , just a 45-minute drive from downtown
  • Shop, watch street performers, and enjoy Boulder’s best restaurants on the Pearl Street Mall
  • Catch some live tunes at Boulder’s most iconic music venue, The Boulder Theater
  • Soak in Colorado culture at the Boulder County Farmers Market (Wednesdays and Saturdays)

Views of a glassy lake in Rocky Mountain National Park

Just 45 minutes from my hometown of Longmont, Estes Park has been a go-to mountain town of mine for many years. I know it quite well.

Though Estes Park has a bit of a touristy downtown — packed full of kitschy restaurants and souvenir shops — I’ve always found it to be quite endearing. But I don’t visit Estes Park for its downtown. I travel there for a completely different reason: the incredible natural beauty in every direction.

Estes Park is a gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park – 250,000 acres full of incredible hiking trails, crystal clear mountain lakes, roaming wildlife, and staggering alpine terrain. You won’t need to leave your car to soak it all in either, as the road leading up to the park entrance is among the most beautiful I’ve ever driven on.

Note: Every car entering Rocky Mountain National Park must pay a $30 entrance fee, which covers you for three days.

Activities & Ideas Near Estes Park

  • Drive along the breathtaking Trail Ridge Road (Highway 34), which tops out at over 12,000 feet
  • Explore over 350 miles of hiking trails in the stunning Rocky Mountain National Park
  • Take a tour of the Stanley Hotel , made famous by the classic film, The Shining
  • Check out how Colorado settlers lived 150 years ago at the MacGregor Ranch Museum
  • Stroll the streets of Downtown Estes Park for shopping, restaurants, and more

An abandoned barn near Steamboat Springs, Colorado

As I write this, I’ve only visited Steamboat Springs once, on a 2019 road trip with my mom. I’ve been ready to return ever since.

My mom and I set up base camp during our trip at the scenic Steamboat Lake State Park. We nearly inflated my two-person raft and set out on the glassy lake on a couple of different occasions, but ultimately we were far too relaxed to be bothered. We made a few visits to downtown Steamboat, filled with delicious food stops, thrift store browsing, and lazy window shopping.

The wide-open landscape surrounding Steamboat Springs is rugged and raw, and driving its sprawling country roads is like stepping back in time. Rustic ranches dot the countryside, and imposing mountains stand firmly on the horizon. Steamboat Springs is my kind of place.

Activities & Ideas Near Steamboat Springs

  • Go fishing, kayaking, camping, or swimming in the pristine Steamboat Lake State Park
  • Soak in the natural 100-degree geothermal pools at Strawberry Hot Springs Park
  • Ride the gondola to the top of Steamboat Ski Resort for impressive views of the Yampa Valley
  • Sit in on a live concert from the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra
  • Enjoy a breathtaking day hike along the Fish Creek Falls Trail in Mount Zirkel Wilderness

Thin waterfalls feeding into a crystal clear lake

Glenwood Springs is surrounded by impressive nature, but many of my best experiences there have occurred within the town. Whether I’m poking around outdoor gear shops, cozying up on a barstool, or soaking in its hot springs, Glenwood Springs always seems to show me a good time.

Originally named ‘Defiance’ in 1880, Glenwood Springs is steeped in Wild West heritage. So, be sure to stop by the Frontier Museum , which paints a colorful picture of Glenwood Springs’ rowdy and tumultuous spirit near the turn of the 19th century.

On top of its rich history, Glenwood Springs has plenty to offer to the outdoor enthusiasts who are passing through. Mountain biking, rafting, skydiving, hiking, rock climbing, you name it – it’s all there waiting for you.

Activities & Ideas Near Glenwood Springs

  • Hike along the Colorado River and through Glenwood Canyon to the picturesque Hanging Lake
  • Throw back a few cold Colorado microbrews at Glenwood Canyon Brewpub
  • Honor the Wild West and visit Doc Holiday’s gravesite in Linwood Cemetary
  • Play a round of golf surrounded by mountains at the Ironbridge Golf Club

A woman on a hike descending into a canyon

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is among the most staggeringly beautiful places I’ve ever visited.

On my first visit, I sat for hours atop the canyon, staring down at the jaw-dropping 2,000-foot walls as I sipped beer in silence. Years later, I embarked on a shin-busting (and mildly terrifying) 1.1-mile descent into the bottom of the canyon to set up camp along the Gunnison River. I spent the entire evening craning my neck up towards the same canyon walls I’d ogled a few years prior.

Though it’s not as gigantic or well-known as the Grand Canyon, I found the Black Canyon of the Gunnison to be just as impressive. It’s one of Colorado’s most magnificent feats of nature and is about as can’t-miss as they come.

Pro Tip : When stocking up on supplies, be sure to do so in Montrose – a relaxed, authentic, and outdoorsy town just a 20-minute drive from the Black Canyon.

Activities & Ideas Near Black Canyon of the Gunnison

  • Camp out atop the canyon and revel in the stunning views at the North Rim Campground
  • Enjoy a pleasant stroll full of gorgeous overlooks along the Warner Point Trail
  • Hike the Gunnison Route Trail , a remarkably  steep descent into the bottom of the canyon
  • Learn the region’s fascinating history at the Museum of the Mountain West in nearby Montrose
  • Kayak, stand-up paddle, or play disc golf along the river at the Montrose Water Sports Park

Open road winding towards the mountains on a four-day Colorado car trip

Of all the picturesque ski towns in Colorado, Telluride might be the most captivating. Surrounded by towering peaks in nearly every direction, the small town of 2,500 attracts visitors from all over the world. The endless opportunities for outdoor bliss around Telluride — hiking, mountain biking, skiing, fishing, camping — are a bit excessive. You’ll see.

Lodging in Telluride isn’t cheap by any stretch of the imagination (the “budget” hotel I’ve listed below is $176 a night!). However, budget travelers can still visit by setting up shop at Telluride Town Park Campground. Show up early, though, as sites are first-come, first-served.

Telluride’s something different, and you need to see it for yourself.

Activities & Ideas Near Telluride

  • Drive Owl Creek Pass through the Cimmaron Mountains and soak in captivating views
  • Set up camp in the heart of town at the Telluride Town Park Campground
  • Enjoy a jaw-dropping day hike along the scenic Hope Lake Trail in Lizard Head Wilderness
  • Try your hand at some of Colorado’s best fly fishing along the San Miguel River
  • Sing, dance, and eat your heart out at the annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival

A coal and steam powered train that says '480' on the front

If I could choose one place to live on this ten-day road trip itinerary, I’d pick Durango. Durango offers some of the best skiing, hiking, and camping in the state, and the town is full of great food, rich history, live music venues, and entertaining nightlife.

I consider Durango Colorado’s cultural center west of the Rocky Mountains, and it’s not even close.

Though the route from Telluride to Durango I’m about to recommend may seem a bit indirect, take it anyway. It’ll be among the most beautiful stretches of the entire trip. Here it is:

  • From Telluride, drive west on Highway 145 for 16 miles
  • Turn right on Highway 62 and continue for 24 miles
  • Turn right on Highway 550 (the Million Dollar Highway) and continue for 81 miles until you reach Durango

Follow this route even though Google Maps will recommend something entirely different. (Trust me.)

Activities & Ideas Near Durango

  • Drive along the famed Million Dollar Highway (US 550) for, you guessed it, million-dollar views
  • Walk along the Animas River Trail , a scenic nature path that cuts through the heart of town
  • Hop aboard the Silverlight Express , a coal-powered train running along the San Juan Skyway
  • Lace up your boots, throw on your daypack, and hike a segment of the Colorado Trail
  • Enjoy prohibition-era live music and ambiance at the Diamond Belle Saloon

A 4Runner driving down a mountain trail near Buena Vista, Colorado

Whenever I find myself near Buena Vista, I usually punish my legs on an ass-kicking ascent up one of the nearby Collegiate Peaks. This impressive collection of mountains — a 34-mile section of the Sawatch Range — includes 19 imposing summits over 13,000 feet in elevation.

Simply put, the hiking trails around Buena Vista are steep, breathtaking, and world-class.

And, if hiking isn’t your thing, Buena Vista has plenty else to offer – ATV tours, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, elk hunting , and camping (to name a few).

When all the adventure has caught up to you, head straight to the nearby Mount Princeton Hot Springs for a long, contemplative soak.

Tips for Planning Your Colorado Road Trip

A road sign that says "WELCOME TO COLORFUL COLORADO"

As a passenger and driver, I’ve been going on road trips for as long as I can remember. Here are some of my best bits of wisdom to help you plan your best trip possible.

Know When to Go

While cruising around Colorado is doable at any time of the year, certain times are better than others. My favorite months to visit weather-wise are September and October – when the leaves on the trees change colors, and the air is cool and crisp.

July and August are typically Colorado’s hottest months and are best for hiking, backpacking, and camping at high altitudes. Snow is scarce during these months, even on Colorado’s tallest peaks .

Skiers and snowboarders should expect the best snow from January until March, although snowfall is impossible to predict from year to year. Driving long distances during the winter could get dicey, as the roads are more prone to snow, ice, and slush.

Book Your Lodging Early

During peak season, hotels, Airbnbs, campsites, and RV parks are known to book up well in advance. Study up, plan your trip, and reserve your accommodations ahead of time, or risk losing out on the lodging that best suits your needs.

Sign up for Hipcamp and get $10 off your first booking

Bring your hiking, camping, and backpacking gear.

Colorado offers some of the most incredible hiking, camping, and backpacking in the US. Pack your tent, boots, and other lightweight backpacking gear so you’ll be ready for any hiking or camping adventures the moment they present themselves. Camping along the way can also save you loads of money.

Download Offline Maps

Cell coverage can get spotty in the more rural parts, so I recommend downloading offline Google Maps for every region you’ll explore during your trip. These offline maps will allow you to use GPS navigation even if cell service is inconsistent or lacking altogether.

Keep Track of Special Events

Visit Colorado’s official events page to keep up with fun happenings that might pop up along your adventure. With constant music festivals, farmers markets, rodeos, art exhibits, and more – Colorado is a lively place with a heck of a lot to offer.

Start Your Days Early

You’ll likely be logging some serious miles, so rise early, brew up a strong pot of coffee, and hit the open road with an entire day ahead of you. You’ll want to give yourself plenty of time to make prolonged pit stops, wear out the shutter button on your camera, and bask in the Centennial State’s undeniable glory.

Don’t be Afraid to Ditch Your Itinerary

Last summer, I spent days planning a “perfect” five-day trip for my girlfriend while she was visiting from China. But about 36 hours into our journey, we realized that the trip I’d planned was moving too quickly. Eventually, we took a deep breath, scrapped the rest of the itinerary, and slowed our roll. It was the right decision.

Buy Travel Insurance

Regardless of how much effort you put into drawing up your trip, the best-laid travel plans can spiral out of control at a moment’s notice. Cover yourself with a rock-solid travel insurance policy to protect against accidents, breakdowns, theft, sickness, and injury.

WorldNomads is widely used by road trippers worldwide. I highly recommend it.

Plan Your Perfect Colorado Road Trip

So, there you have it. I’ve given you the very best information I can offer about taking your Colorado road trip. The tips, advice, and recommendations – it’s all straight from the heart of a passionate native. I hope you find it useful.

I’ve spent decades exploring this great state and hope to spend many more in the future. Colorado is a place I’ll never grow tired of, and it’s somewhere that will always spark my explorer’s spirit.

So, fire up your engine and see Colorado for yourself. Whether you’re enjoying a stroll in City Park, white water rafting in the Rio Grande, or scrambling down the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, the Centennial State is bound to stir up some excitement inside you that won’t quickly fade away.

B Corps can help us travel more responsibly—but what are they?

The number of B Corp-certified companies is growing, but what does this mean and can initiatives like this really help us

Travel has incredible potential for good. It can boost local economies, provide much-needed funds for conservation and offer employment opportunities. But not all companies operate in a way that benefits the regions they work in, and over recent years this is an issue that’s been thrown into the spotlight.

Travellers have increasingly been seeking more responsible experiences. According to Booking.com’s 2023 Sustainable Travel Report, 76% of respondents want to travel sustainably over the next 12 months, while 2021 research by Google found that 71% of people think travel companies should offer more sustainable choices.

But while a majority of travellers want to book more responsible trips, only about a quarter do. This is known as the ‘intention gap’. Factors such as price and convenience play into this, but it can also be because travellers simply don’t know where to turn for accurate and reliable information.

The situation hasn’t been helped by tenuous sustainability claims and jargon, which have flooded brochures and social media feeds in recent years. This is where certifications come in, which try to cut through the noise by providing a badge that lets customers know a company is doing all it claims to be doing.

But, with over 100 certifications in the travel industry, even this can be tricky for consumers to navigate. Some involve rigorous checks to ensure a company does what it says, while others involve little more than box-ticking, with no ensuing verification. Some look for generic impact indicators, like recycling initiatives and workplace diversity, while others are tailored specifically to social and environmental risks and opportunities in the travel industry. Working out what each claim means can be tricky for industry experts, let alone the average traveller. Here we unpack one of the fastest growing certifications: B Corp.

Business with purpose

Founded by three friends in the US in 2006, B Lab — the not-for-profit body that certifies B Corporations — aims to help businesses have a better social and environmental impact. To help achieve this, it’s designed a process to verify if a company is acting in the best interests of people and the planet. The certification is available to any company in any sector; B Corp brands range from ethical clothing company Patagonia to ice-cream maker Ben & Jerry’s. In travel, certified B Corps include hotels, tour operators and sites listing self-catering options. But what does becoming a B Corp actually involve?

Three things, in short. First, the company must score at least 80 out of 200 in an online assessment that covers governance, workers, community, environment and customers. Each answer is awarded points based on best practice. For example, if at least 40% of managers are women, a company can earn 1.03 points; if it offsets its carbon emissions, it can earn 0.48 points; and by collaborating with other businesses (for example, providing data for research or speaking at events) to help improve environmental performance, it gets 0.41 points.

A group of people laughing together while walking

Next, the company must legally commit to considering its impact on the environment and society rather than just making a profit. This is known as a ‘triple bottom line’ approach or ‘mission lock’. In some parts of the world, like the US, this requires a legal status change to a benefit corporation, which means that profit is not the only goal of the company, and that they simultaneously seek to address social, economic and environmental needs.

Elsewhere, like in the UK, companies must instead change the wording of their governance documents to declare that they hope to ‘have a material positive impact on society and the environment’. When making decisions, board members must also consider a range of aspects, including employees, suppliers, society and the environment.

Finally, every B Corp must be transparent about its impact. As a starting point, each has a profile on the B Lab website outlining how it measures up to the standards. These profiles include a report listing the answers to every question in the assessment, although most businesses don’t actively promote them.

A growing movement

As the only multi-sector environmental and social certification, B Corp is in demand. So much so that there are waiting times of up to two years for assessment. However, that hasn’t put many companies off, particularly in the UK, which is one of the fastest-growing B Corp regions globally.

Reasons for going through the B Corp process vary. Some travel companies might want to be part of a community of sustainability leaders, while others might believe it will help to sell more trips to increasingly ethical travellers. Despite the intention gap between people saying they want to book a more sustainable trip and actually doing so, there’s no doubt there’s rising awareness of social and environmental issues. In a 2023 Nielsen IQ survey, for example, data showed that 46% of consumers wanted brands to lead in creating change.

But for many companies, it’s a means of finding points that need improvement and documenting what’s been achieved. Zina Bencheikh, EMEA managing director for Intrepid Travel, says, “The B Corp process helped us to identify areas we could improve. For example, we realised we didn’t have the right gender balance among our tour leaders, so in 2019 we doubled the number of female tour leaders we worked with.”

Intrepid Travel also launched a collection of Women’s Expeditions (all-female trips led by local female guides) following the B Corp process. Other businesses say that certification has made them more transparent — for example, by telling travellers how much carbon each trip is responsible for, or producing the annual Impact Assessment highlighting work across environmental and social indicators. Every B Corp must reapply for assessment every three years, too, so becoming certified can mean embarking on a continual journey of improvement. Mike Bevens, managing director at Sawday’s, says, “When we recertified last year, we improved our score to 122.3 [out of 200]. We want to improve in our next certification.”

Much Better Adventures, a high-scoring travel B Corp, has found that becoming certified has had some other benefits, too, such as finding new like-minded suppliers. As a result, it’s now working with Chilean wildlife tour operator Birds Chile to create a new trip in Patagonia. Co-founder Sam Bruce says, “Knowing that we share an ethos for travel to be a force for good helps build a strong working relationship.”

So far, 60 travel businesses have attained B Corp status in the UK, among them Inside Travel Group, Luxury Cottages, Travel Matters, Steppes Travel and Mr & Mrs Smith. About half have joined collective Travel by B Corp to promote the B Corp badge and work more closely together. Co-chaired by Thomas Power, founder of Pura Aventura, which organises tours in Spain, Portugal and South America, and Rochelle Turner, head of sustainability at group tour operator Exodus, the community includes rail specialist Byway and the tour operator Steppes Travel, among others.

For Power, this collaboration is part of the appeal. He says, “The open, collaborative nature of the community is remarkable. We all run individual businesses, but together we can have a greater impact.” An example of this cooperation was when the group recently commissioned research from behaviour change specialist Behaviour Smart to better understand how to get travellers to choose more sustainable trips.

A complex reality

While the B Corp badge indicates that a company is trying its best to benefit the places it operates in, unpacking what it actually means for travellers booking a specific trip is a little more complicated. “Sustainable travel is nuanced,” Megan Devenish, head of adventure at Much Better Adventures, explains. “Most of a tour operator’s environmental and social impact sits in the supply chain — the businesses, people and services you choose to work with in a destination; for example, a local hiking company or a lodge. So understanding and influencing it can be a complex task.”

The B Lab assessment could be more thorough in unpicking a travel business’s impact in the places they operate — according to a report in the Financial Times, a company may commit to paying its employees a fair wage, but there are no requirements under the existing process that it should extend this further down the supply chain. That means that, for example, a company could agree to pay its employees at head office a fair wage, but it doesn’t have to consider the workers in the hotel they send travellers to, which they don’t own. Currently, profits don’t have to be reinvested back into the local communities, either.

Changing the assessment process would be a positive step in an industry where economic leakage — money seeping from local communities into the hands of international businesses — is a concern. According to the UN World Tourism Association, US$95 of every US$100 spent on tourism in the developing world leaves host countries.

Exterior of a building with palm trees

According to Paul Easto, founder of Wilderness Scotland, these concerns were the reason the company avoided seeking B Corp certification. “We decided to instead channel our energy and resources into tackling issues where we could have the most impact, such as adapting our product and operations to reduce emissions or eliminating all single-use plastics and food waste on our trips.”

But certifications like B Corp have their uses. Xavier Font, professor of sustainability marketing at Surrey University, says: “What the certification provides is a seal of approval that you can probably trust what this company says because it has its house in order.”

Justin Francis, founder of Responsible Travel, agrees: “The best certifications, like B Corp, should give travellers some confidence, but none should be taken at face value. We should instead encourage travellers to be curious and actively energised instead of blindly accepting certification.” He continues: “Tourism is unique in that what is most important to address varies greatly by destination.”

Examples of this can be found worldwide. For example, water conservation is a pressing issue for hotels in Cape Town, where drought is commonplace, whereas protecting mangrove forests is a priority in Indonesia, where coastal erosion puts local communities at risk. This context is difficult to address in a standardised certification like B Corp.

Rochelle Turner, head of sustainability at Exodus, acknowledges this: “There are some other certifications that are specific to tourism and therefore more aligned to it, like The Long Run’s Global Ecosphere Retreats standard and other Global Sustainable Tourism Council-recognised certifications.”

These tend to drill a little deeper into a business’s impact by asking more questions about, for example, its choice of suppliers and the social and environmental risks and opportunities in the destination they send travellers to. Being accessible is a strength of B Corp, creating wider awareness and uptake, but also a potential weakness, diluting what it ultimately means.

B Lab is attempting to address this criticism. The assessment process is currently under review by its Standards Advisory Council (which includes a mix of businesses, independent experts and government bodies) and is open for public consultation. The exact date is yet to be announced, but the first updates are expected to be available later this year and include a shift from the flexible 80-point system to requiring every company to meet minimum standards across multiple issues, such as fair wages and environmental stewardship. This commitment to continual improvement certainly provides hope in the imperfect world of sustainability stamps. Whether B Corp and other certifications can improve quickly enough to meet the increasing scrutiny of savvy consumers and shifting regulation remains to be seen, but in the meantime, as Thomas Power puts it, “It sounds grandiose, but if we all spend our money with B Corp-type businesses, then our world is likely to be a better place to live.”
