Who does the Trek Powerfly 7 FS suit?

The Trek Powerfly 7 FS isn’t one of those e-bikes designed to replace a shuttle van or chairlift. With 130mm travel at both ends, this bike is built as more of an all-rounder, rather than a pedal-assisted downhill weapon. Its forte is long cross-country rides, letting the generous range supplied by the Bosch motor system take you to places you’d normally avoid or put in the too-hard-too-far basket.

We knocked out rides well over 50km long and always finished with plenty of power left in the battery. Of the four modes you can run the bike in, we spent most of our time in the Tour mode, which gave plenty of assistance for a lightweight rider, though heavier riders will probably use the Sport mode more. The Turbo mode is off-the-charts powerful, and for us was more of a novelty than anything else.

Unlike the Trek Fuel, which rolls on 29er wheels, the Powerfly uses the 27.5+ format, with 2.8″ Schwalbe Nobby Nics on 40mm-wide rims. With great power comes great traction responsibility.

Hard to miss it, hey? Subtly is not this bike’s caper – it’s got all the impact of a fire engine, in its bold red livery and with that massive down tube. The size of the tube isn’t just a product of fitting in the battery, it also provides a tremendously stiff core to the frame as well, a hallmark of the recent generation of Trek dual suspension bikes.

Look more closely and there’s a lot of finer detail to appreciate too. The smooth integration of the motor, battery and cabling is superb, and the build quality is typical Trek – top shelf.  A small amount of geometry adjustment is available via the Mino Link (we ran it in the slack setting).

About that fork…

Our bone of contention with the Powerfly is the fork this bike comes with, a basic RockShox Recon Silver. It’s just not up to scratch. We get it; building an e-bike is expensive, pricepoints need to be hit. But compromising in an area like the fork doesn’t make sense to us, particularly when you’ve got the weight and momentum of an e-bike to grapple with. We ultimately fitted one of the new FOX e-bike optimised 34 forks , which let us ride the bike to its full capacity.

Buttery supportiveness

Trek always deliver in the rear suspension department, and the Powerfly nails it once again. We’ve ridden many an e-bike where the rear end seems to struggle a little (the extra weight of the bike, coupled with the mass of the heavy wheels perhaps), but the Powerfly is on top of the game. The rear end has a brilliant progressiveness to it, staying up in its travel nicely, saving the last 20% for the truly nasty hits.

Let’s torque about it

Bosch provide the grunty motor. There’s a tonne of low-down power here, and when you combine it with the climbing gears offered by the 46-tooth Shimano cassette, even the heaviest riders on the steepest climbs aren’t going to be left wanting for more power or gear range. Our only criticism of the Bosch system is the bulky display unit. It doesn’t need to be so big, surely, and it looks ripe for destruction sitting up there!

Longer than a wet weekend

When it comes to the handling of the Powerfly, the bike’s long chain stay play a big role. At 474mm, the Powerfly’s rear-centre measurement is one of the longest on the market, and this has both positive and negatives implications in our mind.

Climbs like Bitcoin

The biggest upside of the Powerfly’s long chain stay is the way it climbs, particularly when it’s steep and loose. Keep your butt in the saddle and the traction is exceptional, you’ll climb things that you’d never have dreamed of.

But not a playful ride

If you’re looking for an e-bike that handles just like a regular mountain bike, then this isn’t it. Getting the front wheel into the air takes plenty of body language, it prefers to stay on the ground. And when descending steep, technical terrain the long stays push your centre of gravity forward when compared to a bike with a shorter rear end.

All up then?

There’s a lot to like about this bike, so it’s a downer that the fork is below par. Finger crossed Trek take this feedback on board for future versions of this bike. While the Powerfly didn’t blow us away on tricky, technical descents, that’s not really what this bike is aimed at. It excels at exploration, long cross country rides, or hooning flat-out up and down fireroads and smooth singletrack, so if that sounds like your bag, give it a look.

Trek’s evolved Powerfly e-bike might make you want to stop taking the chairlift

Most of the structural changes on the new Powerfly revolve around integrating the battery into the bike's aluminum frame. The downtube now cleanly surrounds the Bosch 500wh battery where it rested on top of the 2017 model’s. It can be removed without tools and transported with a built-in handle. The 2018 Powerfly FS's geometry and 130mm travel ABP suspension design with Evo Link are identical to the 2017 version.

Trek still uses Bosch’s Performance CX 250 motor that produces 75mn of torque, but has updated the controller to the Purion Performance unit with digital display. The backlit display shows mode and battery life, as well as basic speed and distance information.

Trek found that some of its e-mtb riders used the different assist modes instead of shifting gears, so the company's product team developed a new Emtb mode that automatically switches assist modes depending on the rider's torque input. This is supposed to offer a seamless feel on the trail, and is supposed to encourage riders to shift gears more often. There are still four modes: Eco, Tour, Turbo, and Emtb , which replaces the 2017 model's Sport mode. A walk mode is included to assist in hike-a-bike situations.

Trek makes fourteen different Powerfly models, but only offers all of them in Europe (more on this in a bit). For the North American market, Trek will offer two full suspension and two hardtail Powerfly models for 2018.

The full suspension Powerfly 7 FS Plus comes with 27.5x2.8” tires on all sizes and costs $5,000. All other models are outfitted with 29x2.4” tires on sizes 17.5” and larger; 15.5” and 14.5” sizes use 27.5x2.35” tires. These models include the Powerfly 5 FS at $4,500 and two hardtail Powerfly 5 models – a men’s and a women’s that cost $3,500.

Trek’s goal with the Powerfly is to match the feel of a regular mountain bike as much as possible. I traveled to Verbier, Switzerland to sample the new Powerfly and after a day in the Alps I’d have to say Trek did a pretty good job.

On the trail the overall handing and suspension performance of the Powerfly FS reminded my very much of a Fuel EX, except I felt superhuman at the pedals even though the e-bike is noticeably heavier than the non-motorized version. Power comes on smoothly in all modes, although in technical and low-traction situations I occasionally found the Turbo mode a handful. The new Emtb mode, however, provided ample assist without the surge I sometimes felt in Turbo. Interestingly, our test bikes were programed to European specifications so power tapered off at around 15MPH instead of the 20MPH that we enjoy here in the States for class-one electric assist bicycles.

Like most pedal assist E-bikes I’ve tested, this one tends to work best at a higher pedaling cadence . I tend to have a slow, grinding pedal stroke that didn’t really stimulate the system like a higher cadence will. Although I can’t comment on battery life because I was handed a freshly charged battery during our lunch break, it seemed on par with other bikes in its class .

We rode a variety of alpine trails and roads that really highlighted the versatility of the bike. It has enough suspension travel for aggressive trail riding and the plus tires really help with traction and control. The only place it felt a little outgunned was on a bike park’s more advanced trails where geometry felt a little steep at times. But in most general trail riding situations, the geometry felt spot on.

Unfortunately, the Powerfly 9 FS model I rode is not offered in North America. And I say unfortunately because it is spec’d with a (stiffer) e-bike specific Fox 34 fork, SRAM’s e-bike 8-speed drivetrain that shifts better under power, and special SRAM four-piston brakes to withstand the extra heat built up slowing the added weight of a motorized bike.

Each of these components offer fairly significant performance benefits over standard-issue components so it’s a little disappointing that the Powerfly 9 FS is not offered in North America. But it is also an understandable decision on Trek’s part due to the lack of total acceptance and understanding here by the mountain bike community and land managers.

Another model I rode at this launch is the 150mm travel, full suspension, Powerfly LT. It’s not offered in North America either, but it’s worth mentioning because I had an e-bike epiphany that really opened my eyes to the possibilities these types of bikes offer. The Powerfly LT is based on Trek’s Remedy and uses the same Bosch powered system as the shorter-travel Powerfly. In addition to the increased travel, it has slacker geometry and a stouter Fox 36 fork that also has a beefed up e-bike specific chassis.

I did two downhill runs in the bike park on the Powerfly LT, but instead of taking the gondola to the top between runs, I rode to the top. It only took me about 15 minutes to pedal the service to the top in Turbo mode, and I did so with little effort. The electric assist erased all the downsides of riding a heavier, slacker, and longer travel bike uphill. In fact I might even prefer the slacker geometry going uphill in certain technical situations. The experience was superior because instead of getting out of my groove by sitting on a lift or in a shuttle vehicle, I was pedaling the whole time. I was riding a bike more and that’s always a win in my book.

Prior to riding the Powerfly LT I liked riding e-mountain bikes but generally speaking preferred to ride my regular bike or enduro motorcycle. This Powerfly LT bike makes me want one in my life. Although I love riding the shorter travel e-mountain bikes, for me this longer travel version is where it’s at – I just wish it and more like it could be offered here. My guess is that as things evolve bikes like this will become available and hopefully more places to ride them will follow. Mammoth Mountain’s bike park recently approved e-bike use on its trails so we’re getting there.

If you wish to return your bike to us please keep it in the box it arrived in and call us on 01772 644340 and we will arrange a collection.

• a) If we have sent you the incorrect bicycle, we will cover the cost of collection and delivery of the correct model.
• b) If we have delivered the bicycle you ordered, but upon inspection you decide it is not the bike for you, we will charge you £50.00 for the collection.

Please do not ride the bike as a full refund cannot be given if the bike has been used or damaged.

Return Items to a store

Any item (excluding food and underwear) can be returned to any Leisure Lakes Bikes store not just the one you made your purchase at, including those made online. The item must be returned in ‘showroom condition’, with its original packaging, tags and with a valid receipt/delivery note.

Wrong size or you don't like the item?

If returning items that are not suitable for either refund or exchange you are accountable for the delivery cost in returning it to us. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods.

New faulty items/ Wrong Item Received

If you have received items that are faulty or not what you ordered send them back to us (using the steps above) and we will cover the delivery cost of the return if it is within 14 days of delivery. If we have supplied the correct product, it is not faulty or it is outside of the 14 days we can not be liable for your postage charges. You should always keep proof of postage and we advise you to use a ‘signed for service’ when returning goods.

In the event that you have received items that are fault or not what you ordered, please send them back to us as soon as possible. Only in these cases will we cover the cost of the return shipping charges.

Faulty Items

If you have received items that are faulty please send them back to us using the steps above. Please include a covering letter describing the fault and if you would like the item replacing or refunding. Once the item arrives back at our Mail Order Centre you will receive an email notifying you about the progress. Faulty items are then forwarded onto the suppliers to confirm the warranty issue. Please be patient with us as we need to receive this confirmation from the suppliers before we can process your request for a replacement/refund.

When returning the item please use Royal Mail1 st Class Recorded* so that you have a tracking reference just in case! If your item arrived faulty we will refund your postage cost. If the item was in full working order at the time of delivery to you, we can not refund your return postage cost.

*In the event that you return a faulty/incorrect item we will refund your postage charge as long as it is 1 st Class Recorded or a lesser value service. We do not refund premium services.

Refunds will be processed using the same method of payment used for the original purchase. Credit and debit card refunds must be made to the card used for the original transaction, cheque payments will be refunded in cash but due to banking restrictions can only be refunded at least 14 days after the original purchase date. Due to the high incidence of fraud we regret that we are unable to offer any refund without a valid receipt/delivery note.

Refunds will be made for faulty or incorrect items, including any delivery charge incurred by the buyer (excluding ‘Special Delivery’) in the return of the item. If the products you ordered are delivered to you in good condition but you wish to return them for any reason we will refund the full value of the goods excluding any carriage charge upon receipt of your returned goods.

Beim Trek zählt: einfach draufsitzen und losfahren und dann bergauf viel Freude haben und bergab ans Limit gehen. Spaßbremser sind das hohe Gewicht und leichte Ausstattungsschwächen.

Trek hat sich für die Akku-Integration eine eigene Lösung einfallen lassen. Die Entwickler nehmen den Standard-Aufsetz-Akku von Bosch und integrierten diesen kurzerhand ins Unterrohr. Optisch wirkt das sehr gelungen, und auch die Akku-Entnahme geht schnell von der Hand. Von Bosch kommt auch der Motor, dessen neuer E-MTB-Modus auch in diesem Testbike extrem viel Spaß macht.

Genauso wie der Grundcharakter des Bikes. Unsere Tester waren mitunter begeistert von dieser "Dri maschine" und ihren Trail-Eigenschaften – und dies, obwohl die Kettenstreben mit 474 mm recht lang gezeichnet sind und das Rock-Shox-Fahrwerk eher straff wirkt. Und auch bergauf verleiht Trek dem Power y mit tiefer Front regelrecht Flügel – das Bike macht in Summe in der Praxis richtig Laune.

Die Ausstattung ist für den Preis standesgemäß – das Bike ist aber schwer. Solide, ohne zu glänzen sind Shimanos Deore-Bremsen (203/180 mm) sowie die hauseigene Vario-Stütze. Schwalbes günstige Performance-Bereifung bietet aber nicht den Grip, der in dieser Preisklasse zu erwarten wäre – was schlussendlich dann doch den Fahrspaß etwas mindert.

Trek’s new Powerfly range starts at £2,100 for the hardtail Powerfly 5 and this Powerfly 9 FS is the second-most expensive bike in the range at £4,275; only the long-travel Powerfly 9 LT (£4,350) is more. Four grand is a lot for a bike but you’re getting a lot of bike: This is a hugely capable mid-travel suspension mountain bike with Bosch’s top-tier motor and biggest battery. It’s fun to ride over pretty much any terrain and it has enough range for big rides.
