M5 Roadworks

The M5 motorway in the UK is a motorway running from junction 8 of the M4 motorway near Maidenhead, Berkshire to Exeter in Devon and is approximately 200km (125 miles) long. It opened in sections between 1960 and 1975 and is part of the Intra-Urban Motorway Network.

The M5 motorway is considered to be a relatively safe motorway. According to the Department for Transport statistics, the M5 had the second-lowest rate in England of fatal and serious collisions between 201315. An Alliance of South West Road Safety Groups revealed an overall reduction in the number of deaths and serious injuries on the M5 between 201115.

Overall, the M5 has an average road safety rating in line with the majority of other UK motorways, with a lower overall rate of death and serious injury than average.

Not sure what happened but the traffic is mad

Roadworks have just started on the roundabout at junction 9 M5 which has caused chaos to the surrounding roads leading to/from the roundabout. It normally takes me 3/4 minutes to get onto the M5, last night (5.30pm) it took an hour!!

is the m5 southbound between j21 and j22 closed at night? We live along the A370 and lorries have been thundering past from about 2200 onwards.

Constant traffic jams from j2 Oldbury towards j1. I believe the cause is the 60 speed limit imposed on the slim premise of air quality. These jams cause more Co2 than if the limit was at 70

M5 traffic chaos as flooding closes motorway

The M5 was closed in both directions

The M5 was closed today after flooding blocked both the northbound and southbound carriageways. The closure north of Bristol was in place for several hours and diversions were put in place. Drivers experienced long delays.

Both the northbound and southbound carriageways were closed between the Almondsbury Interchange and junction 14 in Gloucestershire. Traffic monitoring site Inrix reported: "M5 northbound closed, long delays due to flooding from J16 A38 Gloucester Road (Aztec West) to J14 B4509 (Thornbury / Falfield).

The southbound stretch from junction 14 for Thornbury and Falfield to junction 15 for the M4 at the Almondsbury Interchange was also closed due to flooding, several miles of queues and congestion back to Michaelwood Services. There was also heavy congestion on the A38 between Woodford and Almondsbury as traffic diverted.

Both carriageways had reopened by 1.30pm.

Traffic has eased

Traffic on the M5 north of Bristol has eased following earlier flooding. However, there is still some congestion between junctions 15 and 21.

M5 latest - all open but long delays

Long delays due to earlier flooding on M5 Northbound from J16 A38 Gloucester Road (Aztec West) to J15 M4 J20 (Almondsbury Interchange). Congestion to J17 (Cribbs Causeway) and routes through Thornbury along the A38 as traffic heads away. Traffic was held briefly around 11:20.

Northbound update

Inrix reported:

M5 Northbound closed, long delays due to flooding from J16 A38 Gloucester Road (Aztec West) to J14 B4509 (Thornbury / Falfield). Congestion to the A38 which is solid between Woodford and Almondsbury as traffic diverts. The northbound carriageway remains closed whilst clear up works and recovery for stranded vehicles is completed.

M5 southbound reopens

From Inrix:

Long delays due to earlier flooding on M5 southbound from J14 B4509 (Thornbury / Falfield) to J15 M4 (Almondsbury Interchange). Congestion to just past Michaelwood Services. The A38 is queueing between Woodford and Almondsbury as traffic diverts. Cameras show the southbound carriageway has now fully reopened as the flood has been cleared.

Long delays on A38

There is very slow moving traffic on the A38 between Almondsbury and Woodford as traffic diverts away from the M5.

National Highways is reporting delays of an hour on the M5 northbound between junction 18a and junction 16. Traffic cameras show heavy congestion. Those travelling to Bristol Airport should leave additional time for their journey.

Restrictions on M48 Severn Bridge

Inrix reports:

Strong winds and restrictions on M48 Severn Bridge in both directions from J1 A403 (Aust) to J2 A466 Wye Valley Link Road (Chepstow). Everyone comes off Eastbound at J2 and West at J1, around the roundabouts and back on to cross the bridge, which remains open. Usual restriction in case the bridge needs to be closed quickly if cross winds get worse.

Three miles of congestion

National Highways is now reporting delays of 45 minutes and around three miles of congestion in both directions.

Yellow weather warning

Heavy rain will bring the potential for some flooding and disruption to transport. 10-15 mm of rain could occur within an hour from the heavy showers during today with a few places possibly seeing 30 mm over a few hours.

What to expect:

• There is a slight chance of power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses
• There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings
• Where flooding occurs, there is a slight chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services
• Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
• There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads
• There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

National Highways reports:

Avon and Somerset Fire & Rescue are working with the Environment Agency, Police, Our Traffic Officers and Contractors at scene to clear the flooding as soon as possible.

Northbound traffic is diverted to follow the solid triangle symbol:-

Exit the M5 at J16 onto the A38. Follow to re-join the M5 at J14

Southbound traffic is to follow the Solid Circle symbol:-

Exit the M5 at J14 and at the end of the slip road turn right onto the B4509 westbound At the junction with the A38 turn left onto the A38 southbound, towards Bristol Continue on the A38 for approximately 8 miles to Almondsbury Roundabout/M5 J16 Take the third exit to rejoin the M5 southbound.

Delays are likely on the approach to this closure, with additional journey times also expected on diversion routes.

Live M5 traffic updates today as holiday traffic sparks 'severe' delays northbound

There are "severe" delays on the M5 northbound as thousands of people head home from half-term breaks in the South West.

Drivers are facing 60 miles of delays, with queues starting at J28 for Collumpton and do not ease until J16 for the Almondsbury Interchange.

Travel time between the two junctions is around two hours.

The worst patch of traffic is between J26 for Wellington and J17 for Cribbs Causeway, with traffic monitoring service Inrix describing delays as "severe".

Traffic is also building between J26 and J23 northbound with delays of 40 minutes.

All traffic is being temporarily held due to a car fire on the M5 southbound between J27 A361 (Tiverton) and J28 A373 Honiton Road (Cullompton / Service Area).

Motorists are facing delays of at least 20 minutes.

All traffic is being temporarily held and queues are forming due to an accident on M4 Westbound before J15 A346 Marlborough Road (Swindon East).

Stranded M5 motorists rescued from cars as motorway floods

Part of the M5 was closed on Friday morning close to the Prince of Wales bridge and people travelling to Bristol Airport were being advised to leave additional time

A major motorway was hit with closures on Friday morning after motorists had to be rescued from flooded sections. Heavy overnight rain caused major problems on the M5, just the other side of the Prince of Wales bridge.

The motorway around the Almondsbury Interchange was closed for most of the morning because of flooding causing two miles of queues and lots of congestion. People travelling to Bristol Airport were being advise to leave "additional time" for their journeys.

It was closed northbound near Almondsbury between junction 15 and junction 14 due to flooding following heavy rainfall Traffic officers and a specialist team were at the scene. The motorway was re-opened by mid morning but long delays remained until lunchtime.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service worked with National Highways to rescue people stranded on the M5 after heavy rainfall flooded the motorway. There were also restrictions because of high winds on the M48 Severn Bridge crossing.

Flooding was also causing delays on the rail network. Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton all lines were blocked. Transport for Wales Rail Services between Shrewsbury and Birmingham New Street/International were cancelled.

M5 has now re-opened

The motorway has reopened but there are still long delays.

Monitors say: "Long delays due to earlier flooding on M5 Northbound from J16 A38 Gloucester Road (Aztec West) to J15 M4 J20 (Almondsbury Interchange). Congestion to J17 (Cribbs Causeway) and routes through Thornbury along the A38 as traffic heads away."

New weather warning issued

After a week of rain warnings and more than a month's worth of rain falling over just a few days there is now a warning for high winds. There will be a brief respite from the rain and winds on Saturday but another of low pressure is set to move in from the west on Sunday.

The Met Office has a yellow warning for wind in place from 9am on Sunday until midnight for a large part of Wales, especially coastal areas. More detail here.

Advice for airport passengers

People travelling to Bristol Airport are being urged to leave additional time for their journeys.

45-minute delays and three miles of congestion

National Highways is now reporting delays of 45 minutes and around three miles of congestion in both directions on the M5 this morning.

Delays on Severn crossing

High winds are also causing issues for motorists this morning.

There are restrictions on the M48 Severn Crossing with monitors saying: "Strong winds and restrictions on M48 Severn Bridge in both directions from J1 A403 (Aust) to J2 A466 Wye Valley Link Road (Chepstow).

"Everyone comes off Eastbound at J2 and West at J1, around the roundabouts and back on to cross the bridge, which remains open. Usual restriction in case the bridge needs to be closed quickly if cross winds get worse."

Trains delays for passengers

On the trains

• Service suspended on Transport for Wales between Llanwrtyd and Knucklas due to fallen tree on the line.
• Reduced serrvice on Transport for Wales between Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury due to flooding.
• Buses are running between Aberystwyth and Machynlleth to help passengers with the journey.

Live - M5 blocked with 'queueing traffic' after crash

The M5 is blocked in Gloucestershire this afternoon due to a crash. It happened on the northbound route at about 3:30pm on Sunday.

There are reports of traffic queuing and drivers should expect delays. The traffic site Inrix says it is due to an accident between Gloucester and Cheltenham.

The site says: "M5 Northbound partially blocked, queueing traffic due to accident from J11A A417 (Gloucester / Cirencester ) to J11 A40 (Gloucester / Golden Valley Bypass).

National Highways says: "Traffic has been STOPPED on the #M5 northbound in #Gloucestershire between J11a (#Gloucester) and J11 (#Cheltenham) due to an overturned trailer across all lanes."

The M5 has been hampered by significant closures this morning after flooding caused overnight chaos on the major UK motorway, leaving some drivers stranded.

The flooding is being cleared but delays are getting longer. Despite National Highways originally estimating 30-minute traffic jams, motorists are now locked in queues of around an hour. To make matters worse, there is a severe weather warning from the Met Office in place.

Meanwhile, roads and rail links across the country are facing severe disruption due to the torrential downpours. You can stay across how the weather is affecting commuters on a national level on our storm-tracking live blog .

The affected areas of the motorway are the northbound and southbound carriageways between the Almondsbury Interchange and Junction 14.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix said: "M5 northbound closed, long delays due to flooding from J16 A38 Gloucester Road (Aztec West) to J14 B4509 (Thornbury / Falfield)."

The southbound stretch from junction 14 for Thornbury and Falfield to junction 15 for the M4 at the Almondsbury Interchange is also closed, causing two miles of traffic congestion back to the Michaelwood Services.

Still no time given for when M5 will be fully reopened

Road workers are scrambling to get the flooded section of motorway cleared and reopened, however National Highways was unable to specify when this will be completed.

"National Highways service providers continue to work at scene to clear the carriageway with a view to re-open the M5 this morning, however we are unable to provide an exact time at this moment", the organisation posted on X.

Four miles of congestion and hour-long delays

The National Highways' latest update for the M5 has warned drivers that there are currently delays of 60 minutes and four miles of congestion.

The update reads: " The #M5 south between J14 #Falfield and J15 #M4 is now open. The M5 northbound remains closed J16 #Almondsbury - J14 for clear up and recovery works. Delays of 60 mins & approx. 4 miles congestion both ways."

6,000 metres of water being removed per minute on M5

Steven Basterfield from National Highways has said that Friday's downpours were "exceptional" as they struggle to re-open sections of the M5.

Mr Basterfield confirmed that about 6,000 metres of water per minute was currently being removed from the motorway.

Brave firefighters rescued trapped drivers from cars during flooding chaos

Emergency service firefighters have now left the scene at the Gloucestershire section of the M5.

However, the fire service worked tirelessly throughout the night and early morning to rescue trapped drivers on the motorway.

The firefighters were called to the route at about 01:00 BST to help rescue trapped drivers.

A Sky News reporter Dan Whiteheard photographed the fire crews "pumping water away" from the road prior to their departure in the last hour.

The reporter pointed out the number of stranded vehicles left on the empty M5.

Southbound M5 reopens as emergency crews leave the scene

National Highways have issued an update on the M5, as they confirm that the southbound road is now re-opened.

The National Highways added that fire service and police emergency vehicles have left the scene.

The statement reads: "Initially the M5 was closed in both directions due to flooding following heavy rainfall in the area resulting in water run off from adjacent fields.

"The southbound carriageway re-opened at approximately 09:00 this morning; the northbound carriageway remains closed to allow clear up work and recovery of stranded vehicles to take place.

"Avon and Somerset Fire & Rescue, the Environment Agency, Avon and Somerset Police have all left scene following a multi agency response, with National Highways Traffic Officers are service providers remaining at scene

"There are currently delays of up to 30 minutes on approach to the northbound closure point at Almondsbury."

Shocking video footage shows drivers 'trapped' on flooded motorway

Footage from ITV News shows several cars stranded on the flooded M5 in the early hours of this morning.

Traffic is now backed up with the motorway shut in both directions from J14 to J16.

Overnight image reveals scale of flooding on M5

A picture shared on X by ITV reporter Jonathan Swain shows the M5 totally submerged with water on one side.

The city has five flood alerts and there are concerns about the River Rea overflowing.

The head of St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School in Kings Norton said children were unable to open the doors and a "torrent of water" had run into their playground.

M5 traffic: live news updates

Live traffic updates for the m5 and m5 junctions, plus real-time reports on travel accidents, roadworks, snow and other delays.

The M5 is the primary motorway linking the Midlands to the West Country. On its route south-west, the M5 passes Bromwich, Birmingham and then through the Sandwell Valley. Bromsgrove, Droitwich Spa, Worcester, Bristol and Taunton are all on its 163-mile route, before it finally finishes up at Exeter.

For the majority of the time it is a standard three-lane motorway, but because it reduces to just two lanes in places it can be prone to congestion and other traffic issues. While it is not typically the busiest part of the UK road network, Friday afternoons, summer holidays and bank holidays can be particularly hectic times to hop on the M5.

The history of the M5 

The first 26 miles of the M5 motorway opened in 1962 and stretched from junction four at Lydiate Ash to the trumpet junction at Tewkesbury where it joins the M50. Despite Worcestershire County Council, the local police force and the County Surveyor of Worcestershire pushing for a three-lane route, the Ministry of Transport insisted that a two-lane motorway was to be built. Consequently, when the decision was made to widen the Worcester section of the M5 it cost £123 million to make the alteration.

From 1967 to 1970, the M5 was extended north of junction four, along with the addition of Frankely services. Much of the construction was built as an elevated three-lane motorway using concrete pillars as support. The M5 was also extended southwards, from 1967 to 1977, through Somerset and down to Exeter, using a three-lane motorway layout once again.

Dormitory fire in Moscow suburb kills five

(Reuters) - Fire raced through a dormitory in a Moscow suburb, killing five people, Russian news agencies quoted emergency services as saying early on Saturday.

Tass news agency said an initial investigation showed the fire in the suburb of Balashikha was caused by an electrical fault.

Several residents were rescued from the burning two-storey building.

Tass quoted emergency services as saying the dormitory housed mainly foreign migrant workers.
