TransBalkan Tours was fantastic!

To begin with, I mistakenly booked the wrong day for our tour for 4—our ship was in port a day earlier than I had thought. After contacting the company, they were able to reschedule us for that day, only 45 minutes later than originally planned! Our English-speaking guide, Ezgi, was friendly, professional and very knowledgeable about the history and culture of Ephesus and surrounding areas. She continually checked in with us throughout the day to assess our comfort and preferences for activities. My husband even convinced her to teach him a few phrases in Turkish. We were extremely satisfied with the quality of our tour and recommend it to any visitor who wants a personalized experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our day touring Ephesus, the Terrace Houses and the Virgin Mary's house. Our guide Habib and driver from Trans Balkan tours were terrific. We learnt such a lot and appreciated the care taken to ensure our day was a memorable one. Lunch was included and we enjoyed trying the local foods in a cool, quiet, shady setting. A visit to see rugs being made and silk spun was interesting. We certainly would recommend Trans Balkan tours - good service, good price!

Hiring a car, driver, and guide was the easiest way for us to travel from Izmir (modern airport with lots of wasted space and poorly designed bathrooms) to see Ephesus and end the day in Kusadasi where we took the ferry to Samos. The service was professional, the guide very informative, the lunch quite good. The only negative was a stop at a carpet business. Ephesus is a must to see, especially the terrace housing.

We arrive by cruise ship and our assigned guide was a few minutes late. I cannot remember her name. We first went to Ancient Ephesus and I felt that our guide skipped several areas. When we went to the terraces houses she asked if we wanted her to go in with us. I said yes (I thought that is why we had a private guide). She clearly did not want to go with us. She went in and skipped a few areas and said very little. Then about one level up, she informed us that she would let us explore and meet us at the bottom. She had other guide friends that she kept talking to outside while we explored. Anyway, we saw many other guides going through and realized how much more information their groups were receiving. We were disappointed. Same thing happened at the library and theater. She pointed at the places and gave a very brief summary. She said she would wait if we wanted to go into the areas. Of course we went in, while she visited with her other tour guide friends. We were left alone to see Virgin Mary's house too while she visited with a friend. Lunch was pleasant and the rug factory was included in the end but there was not any pressure to buy. The van did not have any air conditioning in the back. We were hot while in the van. I cannot recommend after seeing and listening to other guides.

We read your comments. You have not mentioned your name and the tour guides name. Since you are from Memphis, we are assuming that you are Brenda May that we served on June 10. The assigned tour guide was Ms. Ozlem Kucukoglu who we have been working with many years. She is an experienced and licensed tour guide. In your comments, you mentioned that she is few minutes late. Your tour suppose to start at 8.30am. You phoned me and I found her for you. You started the tour at 8.29. 1 minute earlier than your schedule. You came out earlier than the appointment, otherwise she was not late. We have responded to the emergency number and solved the issue immidieatly. You mentioned that your tour guide did not company you at terrace houses. Please check our correspondences and the tour program. Your tour program did not included terrace houses visit. Since you wanted to visit the Terrace House,s she gave you the free time for that. Overall, we are so sorry that our tour guide did not meet your expectations. We have noted your comments. Thank you very much for sharing. Kind Regards,

My husband and I spend a day touring Ephesus with Yesim. She was on time, friendly, and very knowledgeable about her country. We visit The House of Mary and it was simply Divine this is a must see!! All the sites she took us to were great, who would have known that we would like Turkey so much. I even sat with a lady as she tried to show me how to made a rug,Kudos to the ladies that still make rugs by hand. We had an authentic Turkish lunch in the garden of the Rug Factory with Yesim and the food was delicious. Thanks again Yesim for a Fabulous Day in Ephesus...

We used Denizhan Pekoz / Ephesus Travel Guide and were completely satisfied. They assigned Ms. Gulcan to us and she was terrific. Excellent English. Well-educated. And a great sense of humor.

Across the Ex-Yugoslavia borders

See another mountain? You’ll probably climb it

Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro

Riding on tarmac will be a pleasure too

We like to ride as much as you do. We suggest to ride an MTB for the best route experience

trans balkan tours

The TBR is an off-road race, and although there are no excessive technical difficulties, riding an MTB will allow you to enjoy it fully! You’ll ride through isolated mountain regions into some of the last untouched wilderness areas in Europe. Get ready to embrace the very challenge of this race: little to no human presence also means fewer chances of resupplying.

Route description (2024)

The first third of the route follows the ridge of the Dinaric Alps close to the Kvarner Gulf. From Sežana (start), you will ride southeast to enter first the misty region of Čićarja, and then the flourishing forests of mt. Snežnik. You will then pass the border between Slovenia and Croatia and enter Risnjak National Park. The latter is home to the lynx, after which the Risnjak massif is named.

From Risnjak you will enter the Velebit Nature Park, which is the largest single protected reach of land in Croatia. Smooth kilometers of white gravel roads will lead you from the highlands to Gospić (the hometown of Nikola Tesla). After a long cross into the hinterlands, you will border the National Park Una and ride along the Via Dinarica route to reach the Nature Park Dinara (after Knin on the map).

You will cross the border between Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and descend into the Protected Area of Livanjsko Polje. From Livno, you will ride into the Cincar highlands, the region home to the last wild horses of Europe, and reach Blidinje Nature Park. You’re now out of the roughest trails of the route.

Mostar will be next on the course, a glimpse of civilization before heading back into the wilderness. This will be the lowest (and warmer) point of the route (60 m a.s.l.). Try to make the most of the visit, since you’re about to enter the most challenging part of the route.

Karst plateau after karst plateau, you will enter the muddy forests of Sutjeska National Park and cross the border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. After a big climb into the Rainforest Perućica Reserve, the view will open on lake Piva with the Piva canyon.

Montenegro will amaze you with its unexpected shifts in landscapes. From the Piva canyon, you will climb to the Durmitor National Park, the highest point of the track (1800 m a.s.l.). Then, a series of challenging climbs through the countryside and windmills fields will link the highlands between Žabljak and Kolašin. One last glimpse of karstic plateaus and you’ll forever carry a piece of Montenegro in your heart. You’ll reach Nikšić, and finally the breathtaking view above Kotor Bay (finish).

trans balkan tours

the ultimate adventure

Bikepacking is the exaltation of freedom: a cycling movement centered on self-sufficiency and big-day rides. Hence, which better destination than the Balkans? In the common imagination, the simultaneous proximity and distance of the Balkans depict an unfamiliar “other” Europe. This race proposes a fascinating adventure in a region that is still perceived as remote and inaccessible. It’s an unforgettable journey across karstic landscapes and flourishing forests through the history of ex-Yugoslavia.

trans balkan tours

We designed the race to follow the most logical way from Slovenia to Montenegro while reducing concrete segments to the minimum. However, we wanted to avoid pointless hike-a-bike sections: we like to ride as much as you do! The result is a route that doesn’t display excessive technical difficulties. The real challenge consists of the environment and the climbing. Do not underestimate potential dehydration where resupplies are spaced out.

The climbing data says it loud and clear: the ideal bike for this race is an MTB with large tires and light mountain bike gearing. The route does not display excessive technical difficulties, however, in a number of sections the terrain is rough, and some short climbs can get quite steep. Overall, an MTB would definitely spare you some hike-a-bike (and saddle sore…).

trans balkan tours

Harsh Nature

This race develops across the Dinaric Alps through some of the most remarkable National Parks in Europe. The karstic environment is prevalent along the route, creating a lunar landscape where temperatures can range from 20 ºC in just a couple of hours. Here, also water availability is a serious concern, as the permeable terrain channels the rain to underground cavities – leaving the surface dry and rocky. These moonscapes are discontinued by flourishing forests, where paths are often muddy and slippery. Briefly, the Balkan nature doesn’t do half-measures.

trans balkan tours

variety of context

The race crosses tourist and rural areas. Keep in mind that these Countries experienced the Yugoslav Wars not so long ago. Some regions still show the scars of the conflicts, both in the infrastructure and in the population’s hearts. Yet, people will warmly welcome you anywhere on the route, even when the linguistic barrier limits communication. You will race through isolated rural and mountain regions too. Here the population is mainly constituted of mountain goats and golden jackals. Also, bears and wolves visit these territories. Livestock is usually watched by shepherd dogs. They’re all fluff and fur until they’re not.

Rules of fair play

Let’s be straightforward: nobody really likes rules. The bikepacking community is driven by the pure desire for exploration and holds to core values such as honesty and fairness. In this context, rules look like unnecessary boundaries to absolute freedom. We sincerely believe that all riders joining the Trans Balkan Race are driven by the wish of competing at their best while exploring a fascinating and remote territory. However, good fences make good neighbors and we convened on 8 golden rules to maintain fair play. This rulebook is rather short but we’re extremely diligent in its application, as the race record proves.

no shortcuts

Cover by bike the entire distance of the route provided by the TBR Organization and validate the Brevet Card at the 2 Checkpoints (within the cut-offs). If leaving the route for any reason (e.g. resupply, or sleeping), resume the race from the same point. If leaving the route for external inconveniences (e.g. roadworks, blocked paths), resume at the closest point. Shortcuts are not allowed.

self-suffiency

Complete the race in total self-sufficiency: foods, beverages, equipment, and spares must be carried from the start, or purchased in available stores. No third-party support allowed.

race category

Begin and finish the race under the same race category – solo or pair. You’re allowed to ride a maximum of 10% of the race length with another participant (members of a pair act as a whole).

Each rider must carry the mandatory equipment during the whole length of the race.

trans balkan tours

Maintain evidence of your ride. We might require to check the GPX of your ride in case of disputes or missing dots.

Traffic laws

Observe local general and traffic laws. Ride safely and do not take unnecessary risks. All roads will be open to traffic during the race, and most of the unpaved/off-roads are passable by car and normally used by 4WD.

Leave no trace

Each rider must adopt environmentally ethical behaviors: dispose of waste properly, minimize the campsite impacts, respect wildlife, and leave no trace.

race direction

These rules cannot possibly foresee every situation. If necessary, we’ll evaluate the circumstances and make our decision. Every decision of the Race Director will be final.

The TBR is a mountain bike race, and although there are no excessive technical difficulties, riding an MTB will allow you to enjoy it fully!

You can ride the TransBalkan race solo or in pairs. Rules apply to both categories, but consider pairs as a whole. Members of pairs can share food, equipment, drafting…Both members of a pair must register for the race and will have a personal tracker.

This is, by all means, an unsupported race. You’ll therefore need to arrange your stays before, during, and after the race. In the Race Manual, we’ll provide some general information to help you organize your stay before the start and at the finish line.

The race starts in the area around Sežana, Slovenia. Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Trieste (Italy) are the nearest airports. It’s possible to book an airport pick-up with GoOpti (www.goopti.com).

Both Ljubljana and Trieste are connected to Sežana by train. Please check with the railway company for the availability of bike spaces and reservation of tickets. Info on the connection here: https://potniski.sz.si/en/trieste-trieste-airport-ronchi-udine/

The easiest way to get back to the start is by plane. The closest airports are Tivat and Podgorica (14 km and 80 km from Kotor, respectively).

Ferries are also a good option. You can find out more at https://www.jadrolinija.hr/pocetna or similar websites.

Public transportation mainly relies on bus lines. Find out more at https://www.flixbus.hr/autobus/kotor or similar websites.

The TBR commits to refunding 80% of the entry fee if the rider withdraws the application before March 1st, 2024. If the rider withdraws the application after March 1st, 2024, and no waiting list rider can fill their spot, the TBR will not refund the entry fee. Please note that after the official race GPX & Manual have been recieved, riders will be eligible only for a 50% refund of the entry fee (following conditionts above).

The mandatory documentation must be handed in before the start of the race, while a copy of the ID/Passport must be provided before April 30th.

– Copy of ID/Passport

– Health Certificate

– Medical Insurance covering emergency search&rescue and repatriation

– Signed Liability Waiver

By signing the rider’s agreement for the Trans Balkan Race, you agree to give all commercial rights to any content you produce during the race to ASD Exploro. To authorize a part of these rights back to you, we offer Media Licenses.

What does this mean?

If you want to promote, tag, or thank your sponsors or brands (even your own) through your participation at the TBR, you’ll require a Media License.

Please contact us at [email protected] to apply for a Media License.

ML’s purpose is to ensure that the entry fee is fair to all riders participating in the Trans Balkan Race, that only sponsors deriving a benefit from their ambassadors’ participation are charged, and that we preserve the support of the official race sponsors that make it possible.

Press Accreditations can be granted to media crews (i.e., a media crew following one or more particular riders throughout the race) presenting a written application with the project details before the end of April. For applications, please reach out to [email protected].

The Race Director will assess the need for a Race Official’s presence on each media car.

This event proposes a fascinating race in a region that is still perceived as remote and inaccessible. The simultaneous proximity and distance of the Balkans depict an unfamiliar “other” Europe. It’s an unforgettable journey across karstic landscapes and thick forests through the history of the Ex-Yugoslavia. The 2023 edition introduces a new route, ready to be explored.

The race develops across the Dinaric Alps through some of the most remarkable National Parks in Europe. The karstic environment is prevalent along the route, creating a lunar landscape where temperatures can vary by 20 ºC in just a couple of hours. Here, also water availability is a serious concern. These moonscapes are discontinued by flourishing forests, where paths are often muddy and slippery. Briefly, the Balkan nature doesn’t do half-measures.

Trans-Sib - four cities

Home Private Rail Tours / Trans-Sib - four cities

Tour can be started on any day

Moscow - Yekaterinburg - Irkutsk - Vladivostok

This journey takes you through the full Trans-Siberian railway route, with stops in four major cities. See Moscow’s Red square, Kremlin and more before taking the train to the Ural Mountains and the city of Yekaterinburg. Tour the sites related to the tragic end of the Romanovs, then travel on to Irkutsk and beautiful Lake Baikal. Finally, travel to the Pacific port city of Vladivostok, Russia’s “Lord of the East”.

Day 1 Moscow

Moscow, Russia

Your Trans-Siberian adventure begins in Moscow, the capital of the Russian Federation.

Our representative will greet you when you arrive in Moscow. As they transport you to your hotel, take the opportunity to enjoy your first glimpses of this historic city.

Moscow, Russia

After breakfast you will be accompanied by your guide and taken by comfortable car or minibus on a city tour.

On our Panoramic City Tour, our professional guide will take you on a journey through many of Moscow’s most interesting spots. Take in the amazing view of the city from an observation point in Vorobyev Hills (“Sparrow Hills”), then get a closer look at the Stalin-era architecture of Moscow State University – one of the country’s premier schools. You’ll also see the Triumphal Arch, Victory Park, Novodevichy Convent, and Kutuzovsky Prospect.  And, of course you’ll see from the outside, Russia’s seat of power - the Kremlin and Red Square among many other highlights of the city.

Return to the hotel.

Moscow, Russia

Enjoy a good breakfast and a little free time. Check out from the hotel by 12:00.

Transfer to the railway station to begin the journey of a lifetime on the Trans-Siberian railway.

Departure to Yekaterinburg in the afternoon.

The ride to Yekaterinburg will take about 26 hours. Nestled in the Ural Mountains some 1600 km from Moscow, this is where Siberia begins. Along the way, the train will stop in a series of 11th to 13th Century cities, each offering historical sights – from the gold-domed churches of Vladimir (part of Russia’s Golden Ring) to Nizhny Novgorod’s Kremlin on the Volga River.

Siberian taiga, Russia

Overnight you will cross the Vyatka River, passing the towns of Kotelnich, Kirov (formerly Vyatka, where the first Russian washing machine was made in 1891!) and Balyezino. Morning will bring you to the city of Perm in the foothills of the Ural Mountains, a cultural city known for its literature and ballet. Six hours later, you will reach Yekaterinburg, and our representative will greet you at the station to transport you to your hotel.

Day 5 Yekaterinburg

Yekaterinburg, Russia

Your day begins after breakfast with a city tour, which includes an exploration of the last days of the Romanovs. This tour will introduce you to the history of the Imperial family in Yekaterinburg, including their imprisonment and tragic execution. You will visit the site where their bodies were hidden in a secret grave by the Bolsheviks, where today a Monastery dedicated to the family stands – a famous pilgrimage site for Russian Orthodox Christians.

Leaving behind the Monastery and the nearby wooden churches, next will be a tour of Yekaterinburg’s major historical sites, including the Istorichesky Skver (Historical Square) which contains the remnants of the dam and embankment from the city’s founding in 1723. You will also see a monument to Lenin, the first head of Soviet Russia, and places connected to Boris Yeltsin, the first President of Russia, who hailed from this city. Then after a trip to the hotel you will be free to explore Yekaterinburg on your own.

In the afternoon you will transfer to the Yekaterinburg train station to continue your journey across Russia.

Departure to Irkutsk.

Siberia, Russia

This entire day will be spent on the train.  As you head towards Irkutsk, you will pass through a number of towns such as Russia’s oil capital Tyumen and the city of Omsk. You will cross the Irtysh River and then the Ob River at Novosibirsk, as heavy forests give way to Siberian taiga. The train will cross more of Siberia’s many rivers, including the Kam, Chuna, Lya Oka, Yenisey and Angara.

Irkutsk, Russia

Your train arrives in Irkutsk at night.  Our representatives will meet at the station and accompany you to your hotel.

Day 8 Irkutsk

Irkutsk, Russia

After breakfast, you will be taken on a city tour of sights around the city, including the Cathedral of the Holy Sign (also known as Znamensky Cathedral).  The tour then concludes with a visit to Irkutsk’s Museum of the Decembrists.

Baikal, Russia

After breakfast and hotel check out you will be taken to the world’s largest freshwater lake, the wondrous Lake Baikal, with a stop at the Taltsy Ethonographical Museum, to see preserved examples of Siberia’s classic wooden architecture.

After viewing Lake Baikal from the observation point at “Cherskiy Peak”, it’s on to a hotel for an optional lunch. Then you’ll go to the Limnological Museum, which hosts exhibits of the lake’s unique ecosystem and an aquarium with local species including the Baikal nerpa – the only species of freshwater seal in the world. Then it’s off to the St. Nicolas the Miracle-Worker Orthodox Church.

Siberia, Russia

After breakfast you will check out of your hotel and transfer to the Irkutsk train station. Morning departure by train to Vladivostok. Settle into your cabin for the longest leg of the journey - from Irkutsk to Vladivostok, passing through Khabarovsk, taking over two days. Take advantage of the 20-to-25-minute stops along the way to stock up on supplies. The view of Siberia’s taigas and waterways on this leg is unchanging but brings home the sheer scale of Siberia.

The final leg from Khabarovsk to Vladivostok takes about 13 hours, passing close by the Ussuri River which marks the border between China and Russia. And keep a watchful eye to the east, looking for the occasional glimpses of the Pacific Ocean as you draw nearer to that port city called “Lord of the East”, Vladivostok.

Day 13 Vladivostok

Vladivostok, Russia

On arrival in Vladivostok, situated along the Pacific Coast, our representative will meet you at the station and take you by car or mini bus to your hotel. After getting settled and having breakfast (optional), your tour to discover Vladivostok begins with a city tour.

During this tour, see the Vladivostok Railway Station, as well as the unique S-56 submarine museum, located inside the submarine itself in the “Military Glory of the Pacific Navy Fleet” memorial complex. Visit the site of the city’s founding in 1860 and the Arseviev Museum, showcasing the history, culture of ecology of the Vladivostok area.

Vladivostok, Russia

After breakfast, you will check out of your hotel and have a transfer to the airport.  We hope that you enjoyed your Trans-Siberian railway adventure and are left with memories to last a lifetime!

Sightseeing

Moscow, Russia

With the largest urban area in Europe (as well as being the most populous city in Europe), Moscow is one ofthe largest cities in the world. The capital of Russia, as well as its cultural, political, scientific, and economic center, Moscow’s history extends back to medieval times. Moscow was a minor border town in its earliest history but was elevated in the 12th Century to the Grand Duchy of Moscow under the rulership of Prince Daniel. This Grand Duchy would continue to gain in power and influence after this, ultimately absorbing neighboring principalities over the following centuries, such as the Grand Duchy of Tver and the Novgorod Republic. Ultimately Ivan III extended the city’s territory to encompass all of the Rus’ territory, taking for himself the title of Tsar (though officially his son, known as Ivan the Terrible, was the first actual Tsar of Russia). Moscow has seen numerous wars through its history, from the Mongols to the Nazis, and has been under siege numerous times. Today a flourishing city, Moscow has an impressive metro system to facilitate visitors touring the city.

Moscow has numerous points of cultural and historical interest, notably Red Square and the Kremlin, but also St Basil’s Cathedral, over a hundred parks and gardens, the Bolshoi Theatre, Tretyakov Gallery, and the Moscow State Circus. Key architectural points include the Ostankino Tower and the Seven Sisters, a group of skyscrapers during the Stalinist period.

Yekaterinburg

Yekateribnurg, Russia

Tsar Peter the Great founded this city on the dividing line between Asian and European Russia in 1723 to facilitate the exploitation of Siberia’s vast natural resources. Named for his wife, the Empress Catherine I, Yekaterinburg is now the 2nd largest city in Siberia and is still prosperous thanks to Siberia’s mineral riches. In the wake of the Russian Revolution, Tsar Nicholas II and the rest of the Romanov family were exiled here and held at Ipatiev House (where the Church on Blood now stands) before their execution.

Ganina Yama Monastery

Originally the site of the Four Brothers mine, the remains of the Imperial family were thrown into a pit and burned here in 1918 before being secretly moved and buried a few miles away. Throughout Soviet rule, people still clandestinely came to pay their respects to Tsar’s family and in 1991 a memorial cross was set on this spot. The monastery was constructed in 2000, and now includes seven churches.

Church of All Saints

This church, known also as the Church on Blood in Honor of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land, was built on the former site of Ipatiev House, where the Romanovs were held after being exiled to Yekaterinburg after the Russian Revolution, and where they were later executed. A memorial at the church includes sculptures representing the family’s final walk to execution and a memorial alter on the murder site itself, as well as an exhibit dedicated to the final days of the Imperial family.

Lake Baikal, Russia

Irkutsk began as a 17th Century gold-trading settlement which also served to collect the fur tax from the local Buryats. When the first road was constructed to Moscow in 1760, trade brought a number of luxuries and other items to the town for the first time. About 60 years later, the town was the seat of the Governor-General of East Siberia, and it later received an influx of exiled elites from St. Petersburg involved in the Decembrist revolt. As a consequence, the city developed a surprisingly rich cultural and intellectual life which continues to this day, with a large number of museums and scientific institutes.

Taltsy Ethnographic Museum

Also called Taltsy Village, this unique open-air museum covers 67 hectares near Listvyanka and showcases over 40 preserved buildings including a watermill, a 17th Century watchtower, two churches, and various farms and peasant homes. The museum also includes 8000 exhibits relating to daily life in Siberia in the 17th to 19th Centuries. Regular folk festivals are also hosted here.

Museum of the Decembrists

Located in the Volkonsky Mansion, the former home of one of the aristocratic families exiled to Irkutsk in the wake of the failed Decembrist revolt, this museum showcases the lives of the Trubetskoy and Volkonsky families and the events of their exile. Of special note is a monument to the wives of the Decembrists who left behind everything to follow their husbands into exile.

Cathedral of the Holy Sign

Known also as Znamensky Monastery, this holy site has a towering iconostasis, a sarcophagus containing holy relics, and a beautifully ornate interior. The graveyard holds the grave of Grigory Shelekhov, who claimed Alaska for Russia, as well as a number of Decembrists.

Listvyanka is a small town of wooden, Siberian-style houses on the shore of Lake Baikal. Some 70 km from Irkutsk, it has a population of fewer than 2000 people. Among its places of interest are the Taltsy Village, an open-air museum of various preserved examples of wooden buildings, and the Baikal Limnology Museum, showcasing the ecology and history of the lake. This town is also home to a handful of sacred sites, including the Church of St Nicholas, Shaman Rock, and the Obo (sacred for the Buryat people who live in the region). The town features a number of shops selling local crafts and souvenirs to visitors.

Vladivostok

Vladivostok, Russia

Vladivostok (the name means “Lord of the East”) sits on the Sea of Japan on Golden Horn Bay. The nation’s largest Pacific port, it is a major shipping and commercial fishing city and the home port of the Russian Pacific Fleet. The peninsula on which the city sits has been a possession of China, Mongolia, and others over the centuries before Russia acquired it in 1858 and built a naval outpost on the site the following year. With the completion of the Trans-Siberian Railway, linking the city with distant Moscow, the economy of Vladivostok grew rapidly, and the city was heavily contested in the Russian Civil War before being taken by the Red Army in October 1922 in what would be the war’s final battle. Today the city is a gateway for travelers heading to China, Japan and South Korea and has a number of unique sites, including the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world and an extinct volcano, called Eagle’s Nest Hill, which offers stunning views of the city.

Vladivostok Railway Station

The foundation stone for the railway station was laid in 1891 by P.E. Bazilevsky, the station’s architect, with Crown Prince Nicholas (who would later become Tsar Nicholas II) in attendance. The station opened two years later, and trains began running between Vladivostok and Ussuriysk. When Moscow’s Yaroslavsky Station was built, this station was rebuilt in a matching design to stylistically connect the end points of the Trans-Siberian Railway. After several additional changes and updates, the station was updated in the 1990’s to recapture the original, pre-Revolution style.

Arseniev Museum

The Vladimir K. Arseniev Museum of Far East History was founded in 1884 by the Society of Study of the Amur Region and was opened to the public 6 years later. Seized by the Soviet state in 1925, it was named for explorer Vladimir Arseniev in 1945. The museum holds a number of artifacts ranging from the 16 th through the 19 th Centuries, as well as Ice Age fossils and exhibits relating to the indigenous peoples of the region.
