Holbox is a relaxed and dreamy island on the northern coast of the Yucatan peninsula. It’s a perfect place to take a break from the main tourist spots and recharge your batteries while swimming in its crystal clear waters or enjoying your favorite drink at a rustic beach bar.

With its pristine beaches, untamed nature, and slow pace of life, Holbox Island will be hard to leave . that’s why I make it a point to spend 3 or 4 days here every time I’m in the region. Sure, Cancun and Tulum are exciting, but sometimes all you really need is a good book and an uncrowded beach!

But first things first: how do you get from Playa del Carmen to Holbox? There are several options to make the trip, and they vary in terms of cost and convenience.

You can opt for a private transfer, a shared shuttle, or a bus to get to Chiquila, but then you’ll need to take a ferry to Holbox. You could potentially also fly there…but we’ll cover that in a minute.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN TO CHIQUILA

If you decide to visit on your own – unless you opt for the private flight to Holbox – your journey will be split into 2 parts: transportation to the Chiquila Port plus ferry to Holbox .

There are three ways to make the trip from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila, and they’re all valid, so you should choose based on your budget and priorities.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN TO HOLBOX BY PRIVATE TRANSFER + FERRY

Without a doubt, the easiest way to make the trip is to have a private driver pick you up at your hotel in Playa del Carmen and drop you off straight at the ferry terminal in Chiquila.

It can also be financially convenient if you are traveling as a group, compared to taking a shared shuttle, where you have to pay per person.

I strongly recommend pre-booking a private transfer from Playa del Carmen to Isla Holbox . It’s hassle-free and done by a reputable company that I personally know and use on my trips to Mexico, so you can travel knowing that you’re in good hands.

❌ It’s the priciest option to get from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila. If you’re traveling solo, or are on a tight budget you might want to look for other options.

SHARED SHUTTLE TO HOLBOX FROM PLAYA DEL CARMEN

If you want to save on your trip from Playa del Carmen to Holbox you can take a shared shuttle instead of a private one. It’s a good in-between option: cheaper than a taxi or a private transfer, but still more expensive than the ADO bus.

The shared Holbox transfer departs from Calle 1ra Sur between Calle 45 and Carretera Federal Playa del Carmen , and reservations must be made ahead of time. No walk-ins are allowed.

▶️ You can take this Shared Shuttle from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila , and then get the tickets to Holbox at the Chiquila Port. It takes 2.5 hours to arrive at the port, and there are two daily departures, one at 8.30 AM and the other one at 3.30 PM.

▶️ Once you’re in the Chiquila port, you’ll need to get the ferry. You can buy online your ferry tickets to Holbox Island .

Pros and Cons of the Shared Shuttle

✅ It’s more affordable than the private transfer , and it goes straight from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila.

❌ You’ll have to make your way to the shuttle station in Playa del Carmen, and depending on where you’re staying you might need to take a taxi . Same upon returning from Holbox to Playa by shuttle.

❌ It takes longer than the private transfer , and it’s not as comfortable as traveling in your own vehicle as you’ll be sharing the van with other travelers.

BUS FROM PLAYA DEL CARMEN TO HOLBOX

If you’re a budget traveler, you can save money by taking an ADO bus from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila , and then the ferry from there. This is the cheapest option to get to Holbox from Playa del Carmen, and it has direct routes from Playa to Chiquila on a daily basis. 

ADO is the main bus company in Mexico , so you can stay assured that the quality of the service is good. They have large buses with air conditioning, toilets, and reclining seats, with routes connecting all the major towns in the Yucatan Peninsula.

▶️ The ADO Bus from Playa del Carmen to Holbox departs from the ADO Terminal Turistica Playa Del Carmen. 

💲The first bus leaves at 9:30 AM, the next one at 11.40 AM, and the latest departure is at 1.40 PM. These are direct buses and take 2h 10m to arrive at Chiquila. A one-way ticket costs $26. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

👉 Once in Chiquila, you’ll need to take the ferry. Tickets to the ferry can be bought online and cost $13 one-way. ➥ BUY I T HERE

▶️ You can also buy a shuttle + ferry combo ticket that includes land transportation from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila, plus the ferry to Holbox. It’s a little pricier than buying the journeys individually, but more convenient as you only need to buy one ticket.

💲 There are three daily departures, the first one at 8.30 AM and then at 11.40 AM and 3.30 PM. The ticket costs between $40 and $44, depending on the bus company you choose. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

Pros and Cons of the ADO Bus

✅ It’s the cheapest transportation option, perfect for those traveling solo or on a budget and carrying big bags. Unlike the shared shuttles, the ADO buses can accommodate large luggage and offer spacious and comfortable seats.

❌ It takes 1.5 hours longer than traveling by private transfer.

❌ You’ll take the bus at the ADO bus station in Playa del Carmen. Unless you’re staying close by, you’ll have to take a taxi to get there, which adds to the cost.

TAXI FROM PLAYA DEL CARMEN TO CHIQUILA (Not Recommended)

An alternative to taking a private transfer would be getting a taxi from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila , although it’s not the option I recommend… especially if you don’t speak Spanish.

Taxi fares are not fixed in Mexico and you’ll have to haggle hard with the driver to get a fair price. If you decide to take a taxi anyway, ask your hotel to book one for you from a company they trust and arrange the price in advance.

FERRY TO ISLA HOLBOX FROM CHIQUILA

To get to Isla Holbox, Mexico you’ll need to take a ferry . The ferry to Holbox departs from a town called Chiquila, which is around 75.8 miles (122 km) north of Playa del Carmen. The drive takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes .

For the journey by ferry from Chiquila to Holbox, you can pick one of 2 companies: Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos . They are both pretty similar in terms of the services and quality they offer, but let’s take a closer look.

Holbox Express offers high-speed ferry trips from the Chiquila Port to Holbox from 6.30 AM to 9.30 PM on an hourly basis . The journey takes 20 minutes, and a one-way trip costs $14 at the time of writing.

9 Hermanos is the other ferry company. Even though you’ll see it as “standard” (as opposed to high-speed), the trip from Chiquila to Holbox with this company also takes 20 minutes . The ferries run every hour from 6 AM to 9 PM, and the journey costs $13.

The ticket is valid for the whole day , so if you miss your ferry, you can use the same ticket for the next available trip that day.

▶️ Once you’re in the Chiquila port, you’ll need to get ferry tickets to Holbox Island . 

You can get the tickets to the ferry in advance here from one of the two companies I mentioned above. Both are good. A one-way trip costs between $9 and $10.5, depending on which company you choose. ➥ BUY IT HERE

⚠️ We’ve recently updated the timings, but you should  check the current ferry schedule  to ensure nothing has changed before your trip.

Once you disembark, you might be able to walk to your hotel if you’re carrying light luggage and your hotel is in the town center. Otherwise, tuk-tuk-style taxis will be available right at the port to transport passengers to further Holbox hotels .

TOUR TO HOLBOX FROM PLAYA DEL CARMEN OR RIVIERA MAYA

If you want to go to Holbox for just one day, figuring out transportation and arranging the trip might feel like a pain. In that case, a great idea is to book a tour and go to Holbox on a day trip where everything is arranged for you to make the most of your day.

TAXI + FLIGHT FROM CANCUN TO HOLBOX

Would you like to fly over the sea and get a bird’s eye view of Holbox on your way there? A unique option to get to Holbox Island is taking one of the private flights leaving from Cancun.

For this, you can take a taxi from Playa del Carmen to Cancun , and then board a private plane only for you and your group that will drop you off at Isla Holbox in only 30 minutes.

▶️ This Private Flight from Cancun to Holbox is by far the most picturesque way to get to the island. Ask your hotel in Playa del Carmen to call a taxi for you (they’ll know which companies are trustworthy) to take you to Cancun Airport FBO, where the plane will be waiting for you.

💲This is a private flight for up to 5 passengers and it costs $1,000 one-way. You will board a plane equipped with restrooms, and receive a bottle of water per person. The first flight leaves at 7 AM and the last one departs at 6 PM. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

Pros and Cons of the Flight

✅ It’s by far the fastest way to reach Holbox , and it includes beverages and snacks giving you a VIP experience.

❌ It’s the most expensive option, costing $1,00 for only one way to the island. Plus you’ll need to pay for the transfer from Playa del Carmen to Cancun.

❌ It’s not eco-friendly , and I discourage you from choosing this transportation method.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN TO HOLBOX FAQs

This depends on the type of transport you choose. Private transfers are faster and take about 1h45m to get to Chiquila. The shared shuttle takes about 2 hours, while the trip from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila by ADO bus takes slightly longer – approximately 2 hours and 10 minutes. You’ll then have to add 20 minutes of the ferry journey.

Taxis in Mexico don’t have fixed rates and you’ll have to haggle with the driver to set a price (do it before the trip or chances are you won’t get a fair rate). The best bet here is to take a Private Transfer, which does have a fixed rate and it’s done by serious companies that you can trust. Cómo ir de Playa del Carmen a Holbox en excursión

La opción más barata para llegar a Holbox desde Playa del Carmen es coger un autobús en la Terminal Turística de ADO, situada en el cruce de la Quinta Avenida con Benito Juárez, que te llevará en poco más de dos horas hasta Chiquilá por un precio de unos 240 pesos (unos 12 euros). El primer y el más recomendable de los autobuses, si quieres aprovechar bien el tiempo en la Isla de Holbox, sale a las 9:30h, aunque también tienes a las 11:40h, 13:40h y 15h. Para no quedarte sin plaza, sobre todo en temporada alta, te recomendamos reservar los asientos con antelación desde su página oficial . En caso de que no encontrarás plaza siempre puedes preguntar al hotel si hay algún colectivo con espacio libre, aunque en este caso, te saldrá más caro. Una vez te deje en la población de Chiquilá deberás andar unos 5 minutos hasta la terminal de salida de los ferries.

Alquilar coche para ir de Playa del Carmen a Holbox

Para hacer solo el trayecto de Playa del Carmen a Holbox no te saldrá muy rentable alquilar un coche , pero si como nosotros estás haciendo una ruta por los lugares más bonitos que ver en México es la mejor alternativa aunque después tengas que costear el parking de Chiquilá. El tiempo de conducción hasta Chiquilá, el último lugar al que puedes llegar en coche y donde tendrás que coger el ferry, será de poco más de una hora y media y deberás pagar algún peaje (7 euros), si no quieres conducir por carreteras secundarias en mal estado, cosa que no recomendamos. Una vez en Chiquilá puedes dejar el coche en alguno de los numerosos parkings situados cerca del embarcadero por unos 100 pesos (5 euros) diarios, negociables si te quedas más días. Si no quieres alquilar coche y quieres viajar más cómodo, puedes coger un taxi con capacidad para 4 personas que te saldrá por unos 200 euros.

Avión desde el aeropuerto de Playa del Carmen

La forma más rápida para ir de Playa del Carmen a Holbox es subir a uno de los aviones privados del pequeño Aeropuerto Nacional, situado dentro de la misma ciudad, que te dejará en la isla en una media hora, ahorrando mucho tiempo ya que evitas todos los traslados por carretera y mar. El precio suele empezar en unos 200 euros el trayecto si sois de 5 a 9 personas hasta unos 600 euros por un avión de dos pasajeros. Puedes reservar los vuelos desde esta página .

Barco de Chiquilá a Holbox

Si llegas a Chiquilá en autobús, colectivo o coche desde Playa del Carmen deberás coger un barco con alguna de las dos empresas de ferries: 9 Hermanos y Holbox Express, que operan este trayecto de unos 30 minutos de duración. Los ferries de estas dos compañías salen cada 30 minutos, entre las 5h30 y las 21h, y el billete tiene un precio de unos 220 pesos (unos 11 euros), que puedes pagar en el mismo autobús ADO o en las taquillas del muelle.

Una vez llegues a Holbox puedes acercarte al hotel con un taxi eléctrico por unos 50 pesos y moverte por la isla en carrito de golf, bici o andando para completar esta lista de cosas que hacer en Holbox .

Si vas a pasar más de un día en la isla, te recomendamos alojarte en el  Holbox Dream Beachfront Hotel , situado a pie de playa y con piscina privada. Otros alojamientos bien situados y con una magnífica relación calidad/precio son el Casa Ohana y el Mapache Hostel and Camping .

Holbox , Una aventura fuera de lo normal para quienes buscan algo diferente. Para el tour de holbox podemos salir de  Cancún, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen o Isla Mujeres. 

El trayecto desde  Playa del Carmen  o  Cozumel   toma como 40 minutos y desde Cancún & isla mujeres aproximadamente 20 minutos.

Después de refrescos, usted tendrá una guía de viaje en barco a la Isla de los Pájaros - para algunos uno de los mejores observadores de aves en   Mexico . Ver flamencos y otras aves exóticas como se alimentan y anidan en esta pequeña isla del Caribe.

El siguiente paso es subir a bordo de un barco con destino a  Isla Pajaros  (Isla de los Pájaros). Esta pequeña isla es uno de los mejores santuarios de aves en la zona, y es fácilmente accesible desde la isla de  Holbox . La reserva protege a miles de aves fascinantes y sus  nidos de .Observadores de aves suelen ver a las  madres alimentar a sus bebés en sus nidos.

Es interesante ver cómo las aves construyen sus nidos en lugares que ellos consideran seguros, algunos en la parte superior de los árboles altos, otros bajos para el terreno, sino protegidos por cactus con grandes espinas. aves, pelícanos blancos, cormoranes y flamencos rosas son comunes a la isla. La isla es también el hogar de una variedad de iguanas, cangrejos herradura (que habían estado viviendo nuestro planeta desde la época de los dinosaurios), y una impresionante diversidad de plantas silvestres

Después de esta parada en esta observadores de aves' paraíso, el barco le llevará a visitar al cenote  de  Yalahau . Se trata de una entrada cuya fuente es un manantial de agua dulce. Podra  Saltar a un refrescante baño. El agua está fría y cristalina, y se puede practicar snorkel si usted trae su propio equipo.

Tras el viaje en barco a la Isla Pajaros y una parada en  Yalahau, disfrutar del almuerzo y tour de la ciudad, sus  hamacas y talleres de guitarra.

Situado al noroeste de  Cancún , Isla  Holbox  es sólo 42 km de largo. Está separada de la costa por una laguna superficial que le da refugio a miles de flamencos, pelícanos y otras aves exóticas y criaturas.La mayoría de las personas en la isla ganan la vida de pesca, es común ver a pescadores caminando por la aldea con sus capturas del día o de llevar sus redes.

Las calles de la isla de  Holbox  están hechas de arena blanca, común de las islas del Caribe, y hay muy pocos coches.  Holbox  es considerado un destino turístico virgen porque muy pocos forasteros visitan la isla. A pesar de la isla de belleza natural, la inaccesibilidad ha dejado intacta por el turismo de masas.

El avión aterrizará en el aeródromo ecológico de la isla. La guía le dará la bienvenida allí con refrescos y una merienda para prepararse para explorar la Isla de  Holbox . Disfrute de un almuerzo de pescados  recién atrapados  del día, preparado de la  manera que usted desee. Langosta también está disponible para una suma adicional de $ 6.

How to Get From Playa del Carmen to Holbox in 2024

Trying to figure out how to get from Playa del Carmen to Holbox? You’ve come to the right place!

As a travel blogger that lives in Playa del Carmen , I’ve traveled to Holbox Island several times and know all the best ways to get there.

Although it’s a bit of a trek, getting to Holbox from Playa del Carmen is actually quite simple if you know what to expect.

In this post, I’ll explain exactly how to get from Playa del Carmen to Holbox , and how to navigate the transportation options including buses, shuttles, and ferries.

I’ll also share tips on where to stay, top things to do, the best places to eat, and more to help you make the most of your visit to Holbox.

How to Get to Holbox from Playa del Carmen

Getting from Playa del Carmen to Isla Holbox can seem like a daunting task but trust me it’s not as hard as it looks!

Basically you just have to travel from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila (2 hours), then take the ferry from Chiquila to Holbox Island (30 min).

Step 1: Drive from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila

The first step of the journey is to drive from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila, which is a small town on the northern coast of the Yucatan peninsula.

To get to Chiquila from Playa del Carmen, you have the following options:

• Take a colectivo
• Take the ADO bus
• Hire a private shuttle
• Rent a car and drive yourself

Take a colectivo to Chiquila

If you don’t have a car, the cheapest way to get to Chiquila is to take a colectivo, which is a shared van service that is very common in this part of Mexico. 

I’ve taken the Holbox colectivo before and it was very easy and safe! 

Playa del Carmen to Chiquila Colectivo Location

The Chiquila/Holbox colectivo picks up at the main colectivo station in downtown Playa del Carmen near the Chedraui grocery store and the main highway 307 (📍 Google Maps Location ).

Once you arrive to the colectivo station, look for the signs for the Chiquila colectivo to get in the right line. There’s usually staff around that can help if you need assistance.

Once you get to Chiquila, the colectivo will drop you off at a parking lot just outside of the ferry terminal.

Playa del Carmen to Chiquila Colectivo Cost

The cost for the Chiquila colectivo is around $350 pesos each way (~$20 USD) and the trip takes about 2 hours.

It’s best to have cash on hand (pesos are best) as credit cards are typically not accepted.

How to Reserve the Chiquila Colectivo

You can reserve a spot on the Chiquila colectivo via WhatsApp by sending a message to +52 984 188-6604 .

It’s best to reserve in advance as the shuttle can fill up quickly.   It is first come, first serve if you do not reserve in advance.

Travelista Tip: I would recommend getting there 15-20 minutes early so you can ensure you get a good seat on the shuttle. 

Take the ADO bus to Chiquila

Another option is to take the ADO bus from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila. This is my preferred way to go because the buses are much larger and more comfortable.

While a little more expensive than a colectivo, the ADO bus is a larger charter-style bus with restrooms and TVs onboard.

The ADO bus from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila leaves from the Playa del Carmen Turistica ADO station in downtown Playa del Carmen on 5th Avenue and Avenida Juarez.

The bus will drop you off at the Chiquila ADO Station which is only about a 5 minute walk away from the ferry.

The price for the ADO bus to Chiquila is around $370 pesos (~$22 USD) each way and the trip takes about 2 hours and 10 minutes.

How to Book ADO Bus Tickets

ADO tickets can be purchased on the ADO website (Spanish only), on Busbud (English), or directly at the ADO Station.

If booking online, make sure to put “Chiquilá” as the destination and not Holbox.

If you don’t speak Spanish, I would recommend booking your tickets on Busbud. It’s a little bit more expensive but you’ll be able to reserve everything in English.

Hire a private shuttle to Chiquila

If you have a larger group or prefer more social distancing, another option is to hire a private shuttle to get to Chiquila from Playa del Carmen. 

Pricing starts around $180 USD each way depending on the size of your group and includes transport in a private air-conditioned van. 

This is the most convenient way to go because they’ll pick you up from wherever you’re staying in Playa del Carmen and take you right to the ferry.

Rent a car and drive to Chiquila

The last option is to rent a car and drive from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila. The trip takes about 2 hours and is a fairly easy drive. 

Cars are not allowed on Holbox so you’ll need to park the car in Chiquila. There are paid parking lots right outside the ferry where you can leave your car. 

Step 2: Travel from Chiquila to Holbox Island

Once you arrive to Chiquila, you will then need to travel across the water to Holbox, which only takes about 30 minutes.

You can do this by taking the ferry or hiring a water taxi . Both are only about a 5 minute walk from where the buses let you off.

Take the Isla Holbox ferry

Taking the ferry is by far the most common way to get over to Holbox Island Mexico. 

There are two ferry companies (Holbox Express and 9 Hermanos) with alternating schedules so one leaves every half hour. 

The cost is around $220 pesos ($~13 USD) each way and there are kiosks just outside the ferry where you can purchase your tickets.

The Holbox ferries are large and comfortable with an air-conditioned downstairs seating area, and an open-air upper deck. 

If you decide to sit upstairs, you’ll want to have sunscreen handy as there is no shade! There are also restrooms and luggage storage facilities on board if needed.

Travelista Tip: If you are a Quintana Roo resident with a valid ID, you can get a discount on the Holbox ferry.

Hire a water taxi

Another option for getting over to Holbox is to hire a water taxi. Once you arrive to Chiquila you will see rows of small fishing boats lined up just next to the ferry that you can hire. 

These are a good option if you drive yourself or arrive at an off hour and don’t want to wait for the next ferry.  The price is pretty reasonable and isn’t much more than taking the ferry.

How to Get Around Holbox

Once you arrive to Holbox, you will be greeted by a line of golf carts waiting outside of the ferry that you can rent or hire to get to your hotel.   

If you don’t have much luggage, it’s also possible to walk from the ferry to the town center, which is less than 10 minutes away.

It’s important to know that none of the roads in Holbox are paved and the streets simply consist of dirt roads and sidewalks. 

Plus, there are no cars on Holbox, so the only way to get around is by golf carts or bicycles. You can easily hire a golf cart taxi or rent one on your own.

Travelista Tip:  Holbox a beautiful island but be prepared to smell a lot of exhaust from the golf carts and inhale dust from the dirt roads, especially in the town center.

Where to Stay in Holbox

Even though the island is small, there is still a wide variety of Holbox hotels to meet every budget. 

Travelista Tip: If you can, I would recommend staying on the east side of the beach.  This area of the beach is nicer, more widespread, and usually has less seaweed.

• LUXURY : Casa Las Tortugas is one of my favorite hotels on Holbox! This boutique luxury adults-only hotel is SO CUTE with an outdoor swimming pool, an amazing beachfront restaurant, and boho-chic guestrooms. 

• MID RANGE: Villas HM Palapas del Mar is a trendy mid-range Holbox hotel with a great central location, a rooftop pool and sushi restaurant, and an incredible beachfront. You can read my full Villas HM Palapas del Mar review for all the details!

• BUDGET: Madre Holbox is a small, cute hotel located in downtown Holbox, and about a 10 minute walk from the beach. I stayed here and had a great experience!

Top Things to Do in Holbox

There are a ton of fun things to do in Holbox whether you want to be adventurous or simply take it easy.

Here are just a few of the top things you can do on the island: 

Relax on the beach

Number one thing to do in Holbox? Nothing! This is how I usually spend most of my time in Holbox – just laying around on the beach and enjoying the beyond gorgeous views. 

I would recommend staying at a hotel directly on the beach so you can take advantage of their beach loungers and umbrellas. Otherwise, you can rent chairs from one of the Playa Holbox hotels or beach clubs. 

If you’re feeling up for a picturesque seaside walk, take a stroll along the natural sandbar to the Punta Mosquito nature reserve, where you might be lucky enough to spot some flamingos in the wild.

Go swimming with whale sharks

If you want to be more adventurous, you can swim with whale sharks in Holbox, which is one of the most popular tours on the island. 

Whale shark season in Holbox is between the months of May-September , when you can get up close and personal and snorkel alongside these gentle giants. 

I swam with whale sharks in Isla Mujeres and it was truly an unforgettable experience! 

View the bioluminescence

One of the most totally unique activities on the island is going on a Holbox bioluminescence tour .

Holbox is one of the few places in the world with bioluminescent plankton, which lights up under the water at night. 

These night time bioluminescence tours typically depart around 9:00PM and allow you to kayak or swim in the glowing water under the stars.

Watch the sunset

With beaches on the west side of the island, Holbox is one of the best places in the Yucatan peninsula to watch the sunset over the ocean. 

Holbox sunsets are really incredible and shouldn’t be missed! You simply won’t find that in Playa del Carmen or on the east coast of Mexico.

Every evening, it’s a highly anticipated event that everyone prepares for. You will see crowds of people gathering at beach bars and setting up chairs to get a good view. 

Where to Eat in Holbox

Even though Holbox is small, it still has a good amount of restaurants, offering a variety of cuisines.  Here are a few of my favorite restaurants in Holbox:

Painapol Holbox

Painapol Holbox is a healthy breakfast and lunch restaurant serving acai bowls, smoothies, and healthy meals. 

It’s one of my favorite restaurants in Holbox and I always eat there whenever I go to Holbox!

It’s a must-visit for a healthy breakfast, lunch, or a smoothie bowl that is just too pretty to eat.

Luuma Holbox

Luuma Holbox is a trendy restaurant and cocktail bar at Casa las Tortugas featuring tapas and small plates. 

The atmosphere is very hip and the menu offers traditional Mexican dishes made with eclectic ingredients like chaya croquettes and black octopus empanadas. 

Viva Zapata

Viva Zapata is a popular dinner restaurant in Holbox with some of the best Mexican food on the island.

Featuring a restaurant and bar, the casual environment is a popular spot for a late night dinner. The menu offers traditional Mexican dishes like tacos and fajitas, as well as pasta and meat dishes.

I love the chicken fajitas which are always tasty and are served with handmade tortillas!

Holbox Travel Tips

Follow these tips to make the most of your Holbox experience:

• Stay on the east side of the beach: If you can I would recommend staying on the east side of the beach, which is nicer, more widespread, and has less seaweed.  Near Casa las Tortugas is a prime location with a stunning beach but still close to town. 
• Bring cash: One of my biggest Holbox safety tips is to bring as much cash as you think you’ll need for your transportation and daily expenses.  Some hotels and restaurants will accept credit cards, but access to ATMs is very limited on the island so it’s best to have enough cash on hand just in case. 
• Be prepared to be unplugged: The basic infrastructure on Holbox is not the best so the cell service and wifi is extremely spotty.  Don’t expect to have reliable internet service and wifi at your hotel may only be available in common areas.
• Bring biodegradable sunscreen: You’ll definitely want to wear biodegradable reef-safe sunscreen anytime you are swimming in the ocean in order to protect the coral reefs.
• Bring bug spray: Holbox is a tropical island and the mosquitos can be very intense, especially around sunset. Be sure to bring some bug spray to avoid bug bites.
• Don’t wear nice shoes: Since all of the roads in Holbox are made of dirt, I wouldn’t recommend wearing nice shoes as your shoes will get dirty easily.  Also, for women I wouldn’t even bother bringing heels as the roads are uneven and the whole island is pretty casual. 

Getting Back to Playa del Carmen from Holbox

For the return trip from Holbox to Playa del Carmen, you can basically just reverse the transportation process. 

If you’re taking the colectivo or the ADO, I would definitely recommend booking in advance as the spots fill up quickly. 

You won’t need to book your ferry tickets in advance as those tickets are usually readily available.

The correct pronunciation is “Hole-Bosh”, which means “black hole” in the Mayan language. 

Holbox is approximately 1 mile wide and 26 miles long but only the west side of the island is developed. 

Holbox is located about 2.5 hours away from Playa del Carmen. First, you need to take 2-hour ground transportation to Chiquila, then a 30-minute ferry ride from Chiquila to Holbox.

The drive from Playa del Carmen to Chiquila takes about 2 hours, followed by a 30-minute ferry ride over to the island.

The ferry ride to Holbox takes about 30 minutes.

Visiting Holbox is definitely worth it for its calm tranquil beaches and a quiet island getaway. Just be prepared to be unplugged.

I would recommend staying for at least 2 nights.  It takes a good half day to get there so you’ll want to make sure you have enough time to experience the island. 

The best time to go to Holbox is during the dry season from December-April.

🚨 Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

☀️ Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited on most snorkeling tours, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

Comenzaremos pedaleando por las calles más auténticas de Playa del Carmen , explorando sus animados barrios y descubriendo el día a día de los locales. A medida que avancemos, os sorprenderá cómo el entorno urbano se transforma poco a poco en un paisaje más natural, preparándonos para la siguiente etapa de nuestra aventura.
