A Goofy Movie's Roxanne Gets Spot-On Cosplay From Classic Disney Film

15 most rewatchable war movies, ranked, what happened to noriko in godzilla minus one.

As the face of two of Hollywood's biggest franchises, Tom Cruise is one of the most prolific action movie stars in cinematic history. Cruise's recently released Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One became the highest-rated movie of the celebrated franchise which surprisingly seems to get better with each new film. Cruise has starred in 44 feature films to date since his career began with 1981's Endless Love . The upcoming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two will be the eighth film of Cruise's longest-standing franchise and will mark his 45th performance in a feature film.

Cruise has been in dozens of iconic movies from The Color of Money and Rain Man to A Few Good Men and Jerry Maguire but has surprisingly not won an Academy Award despite four nominations. Cruise even starred in Stanley Kubrick's final film Eyes Wide Shut and Paul Thomas Anderson's cult classic Magnolia . Cruise has proven throughout his more than 50-year career that he is much more than an action franchise hero and was even credited by Steven Spielberg as the savior of Hollywood in 2022. At 61, the death-defying Cruise shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Here are his best action movies ranked from worst to best.

14 The Mummy (2017)

The Mummy was bogged down by an uninspired screenplay and hollow action sequences generated by sloppy CGI, ultimately disappointing fans and critics alike. Not even Cruise's trademark charisma could bring The Mummy to life, which had meant to be the first installment of another major action franchise for Cruise. The 2017 version of The Mummy feigned in comparison to the over-the-top but enjoyable Branden Fraser movies and a rebooted franchise never found its footing.

13 Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)

The sequel to Christopher McQuarrie's 2012 Jack Reacher was under new direction with Cruise still in the leading titular role. Never Go Back technically makes the Jack Reacher movies collectively Cruise's third active franchise (fourth if you consider the potential of an Edge of Tomorrow 2 ). The Jack Reacher sequel is a solid action thriller that is arguably lacking in originality of character and plot, but fans of Cruise will find the film's flaws easy to overlook.

12 Knight And Day (2010)

Knight and Day combines elements of action, comedy, and romance and is held up by the onscreen chemistry of Cruise and costar Cameron Diaz. With a surprisingly stacked cast including Peter Sarsgaard, Viola Davis, Gal Gadot, and Paul Dano, the potential for this film is seemingly sky-high but ultimately results in an inflated and lukewarm movie. Despite its stylish aesthetic, Knight and Day is ultimately a little too brainless and surface-level to elicit a positive response.

11 Days of Thunder (1990)

Days of Thunder stars Cruise as a NASCAR racer in an apparent attempt to bring his Top Gun energy into a new playing field under director Tony Scott. Paired with Hollywood heavy hitters Robert Duvall, Nicole Kidman, and John C. Reilly, Cruise is given all the fuel he needs to make another great protagonist worth rooting for. Despite suffering from a factory-setting screenplay, Cruise and Co. deliver high-octane energy that offers plenty of fast-paced thrills.

10 Jack Reacher (2012)

The original Jack Reacher featured the directorial efforts of Christopher McQuarrie before he and Cruise paired up for the latter installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise. Jack Reacher is thoughtfully constructed and paced in what in many ways feels like a trial run of Rogue Nation and Fallout . Fans of the recent Mission: Impossible movies will likely find merit in the mystery action thriller.

9 Oblivion (2013)

What Oblivion lacks in identity, it makes up for in gorgeous cinematography and cinematic atmosphere. Backed by a cerebral dreamlike score by M83, Oblivion struggles to present itself fully, weaving in between moments of sci-fi action tropes and beautifully poetic visual storytelling. The stunning aesthetic alone makes Oblivion a fan-favorite for some who are drawn to the fantasy elements of the dystopic world.

8 The Last Samurai (2003)

The Last Samurai is one of Cruise's better action films in the truest sense, full of intensity in both emotion and adventure. The Last Samurai possesses a full-bodied approach that ultimately becomes an epic by veteran action-war director Edward Zwick. Zwick directed large-scale war films such as Glory , Legends of the Fall , and Courage Under Fire before The Last Samurai , one of Cruise's more serious drama films.

7 American Made (2017)

American Made feels like Cruise's contribution to a post- The Wolf of Wall Street Hollywood, placing it in a similar category as War Dogs and Billionaire Boys Club . Even with American Made claiming to be based on a true story, Cruise is able to make it a fun and slick action movie that is full of original twists and the actor's signature charm. American Made has a similar lightheartedness to Edge of Tomorrow , which Doug Liman also directed.

6 Top Gun (1986)

What more can be said about Top Gun that already hasn't been? It's perhaps the most famous Tom Cruise film ever made despite its handful of flaws and stereotypes. The movie is full of legendary moments and one-liners, cementing itself as one of the most quintessential American movies of all time. It's a relatively plotless movie that somehow works on many levels that are difficult to explain other than it's just extremely immersive and fun.

5 War of the Worlds (2005)

War of the Worlds is one of Spielberg's best sci-fi action movies and one of his more gritty and bleak films. Both he and Cruise fully commit to the scale of the original story written by H. G. Wells which doesn't allow much room for their usual bag of tricks, making it an intensely compelling and at times terrifying film. Cruise is reduced to playing a helpless person rather than his typical action star, twisting the genre on its head and ironically producing one of Cruise's better action movies.

4 Minority Report (2002)

Minority Report was the first movie that Spielberg directed Cruise in, bringing the action star into a fictional future for the first time onscreen. Minority Report brings Cruise to new heights on several levels and largely acts as an evolution in his career into becoming a bonafide action star. Spielberg's direction legitimized Cruise as a dramatic actor with a complexity outside of his typical stuntwork and mannerisms, making it a classic in his filmography.

3 Collateral (2004)

Collateral is a sharp and mysterious action thriller that is built upon its great dialogue and the onscreen dynamic between Cruise and co-star Jamie Foxx. The Michael Mann-directed film is seeped in neo-noir influences and is masterfully paced, making Collateral an easy film to revisit for a guaranteed thrill. Cruise atypically plays a villain in the film, giving Collateral another reason why it's one of the actor's best in the genre.

2 Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

After one of the most confusing marketing campaigns in recent memory that made many believe the film's title was "Live. Die. Repeat.", Edge of Tomorrow emerged as one of the most original and enjoyable Tom Cruise action films. The Groundhog Day scenario is given a compelling update in this easily consumable sci-fi movie that was an unlikely action-mystery film disguised as a major blockbuster.

1 Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

After the enormous impact of Top Gun: Maverick at the 2022 box office, there's little question that it is Cruise's best action movie ever. While some of the latter installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise are certainly on par with the scope and scale of Maverick , the Top Gun sequel not only outperformed the original by a long shot, but it was also a better movie in just about every way. Top Gun: Maverick could have been a total letdown but ultimately delivered exactly at the right time, making it Tom Cruise's best action film.

The 7 best Tom Cruise action movies, ranked

Tom Cruise holds onto a cargo plane in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.

Very few movie stars have been at the center of more well-regarded action movies than Tom Cruise . It’s not hard to see why, either. Over the course of his career, Cruise has developed an obsessive devotion to practical action sequences, the kind that make audiences gasp and cheer when they’re brought to life on the big screen. His desire to wow and thrill has resulted in him putting himself in some serious danger over the years. It’s also led to some of the greatest action movies ever made.

7. Minority Report (2002)

  • 6. Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (2015)

5. Collateral (2004)

4. edge of tomorrow (2014).

  • 3. Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol (2011)

2. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

  • 1. Mission: Impossible — Fallout (2018)

With Cruise’s latest film, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , hitting theaters this week, now seems like as good a time as any to look back at his career and celebrate some of his biggest achievements. So, without any further ado, here are the seven best action movies that Tom Cruise has ever starred in. ( Dead Reckoning Part One notwithstanding.)

It may not be the first film that comes to viewers’ minds when they think about Tom Cruise’s storied action filmmaking career, but 2002’s Minority Report is almost as thrilling and viscerally intense as any other blockbuster he’s made. Based on a novella by Philip K. Dick, this Steven Spielberg -directed sci-fi effort is a paranoid, man-on-the-run conspiracy thriller that gives both Cruise and its director the chance to truly flex their muscles on-screen.

  • 7 best 1990s crime movies, ranked
  • 7 best 2010s fantasy movies, ranked
  • 7 best Neil Gaiman adaptations, ranked

Visually, the film features some of the best and most inventive chase sequences that either Cruise or Spielberg has been a part of, including one alleyway escape that manages to strike the perfect balance between goofy, terrifying, and thrilling. On top of all of that, it packs in more than a few terrifying messages about the dangers of governmental corruption and surveillance. Over 20 years after its release, it’s still one of the most underrated movies that both Cruise and Spielberg have ever made.

6. Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation (2015)

Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation isn’t even the greatest action movie of its franchise, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an absolute thrill ride. Equal parts Hitchcockian thriller and Spielbergian blockbuster, Rogue Nation is about as entertaining and operatic as a mainstream action movie can get. It’s also, notably, the first Mission: Impossible film directed by longtime Cruise collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie.

From its show-stopping cargo plane prologue to its midpoint opera house assassination attempt, Rogue Nation is full of show-stopping action set pieces. Together, McQuarrie and Cruise use their shared cinematic obsessions to deliver a film that feels as much like a love letter to the Roger Moore-led Bond films of the 1970s as it does an ode to Golden Age Hollywood thrillers like Charade and North by Northwest . Throw in Rebecca Ferguson’s scene-stealing debut turn as fan-favorite MI6 agent Ilsa Faust and what you’ve got is the platonic ideal of a big-budget American action movie.

Collateral may not be quite as action-oriented as some of the other films on this list, but it’s just as intense and engrossing. Directed by Michael Mann , the film stars Tom Cruise as Vincent, a hitman who takes a taxi driver (Jamie Foxx) hostage for a night and forces him to help him carry out a series of cold-blooded assassinations. As Vincent, Cruise not only turns in a rare villain performance but also delivers some of the most quietly nuanced and impressive dramatic work of his career.

And there are Collateral ’s action sequences, which are sparser than you might expect, but nonetheless impactful and impeccably staged. The film’s second act pivots around a nightclub confrontation that is among the greatest shootouts that have ever been realized on-screen, and Cruise is at the center of Collateral ’s nerve-wracking last chase sequence, which ends with a final line of dialogue that’s truly for the ages. To put it simply: Action movies just don’t get any more atmospheric or thrilling than Collateral .

This Doug Liman-directed 2014 sleeper hit is a rare thing: A CGI-heavy sci-fi action movie that looks consistently good and is entertaining from start to finish. Put that another way: Despite following different rules than his more recent films, Edge of Tomorrow still meets the exacting quality level that Tom Cruise has become known for. The film’s action sequences are gritty, explosive, and tactile. Even more importantly, they’re firmly rooted in the respective arcs of both Cruise’s William Cage and Emily Blunt’s Rita Vrataski. Together, Cruise and Blunt are as good of an action duo as any other that Hollywood has offered throughout the past 10 years.

As Cage, a cowardly figurehead who only discovers his courage after literally dying countless times, Cruise is also as funny and heroic as he’s ever been on-screen. Consequently, while Edge of Tomorrow still isn’t quite as well known as some of the other films on this list, it’s just as crowd-pleasing, gripping, and endlessly rewatchable.

3. Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol (2011)

If you were to try and trace Tom Cruise’s late-career renaissance back to one movie, it’d arguably be Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol . The fourth installment of a franchise that had previously been dormant for five years, Ghost Protocol really set the standard for most of the Tom Cruise-led action films that have followed it. Directed by longtime Pixar filmmaker Brad Bird, it’s a film that pays just as much homage to the Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd silent movies that Cruise loves as it does push the limits of what modern action movies do.

The film’s ensemble, which features Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner and one-time franchise scene-stealer Paula Patton, is one of the best of any Mission: Impossible movie to date. Its central Burj Khalifa set piece, in which Cruise’s Ethan Hunt literally scales, hangs onto, and runs around the side of the world’s tallest building, remains the greatest stunt in Mission: Impossible history, too. As a matter of fact, it’s one of the greatest stunts in movie history — period.

No list of Tom Cruise’s greatest hits could exclude this film and do so with a straight face. Top Gun: Maverick has been called a lot of things over the past year (Steven Spielberg himself even named it the movie that saved movies), but when you look past its important place in the history of modern moviegoing, you’re still left with a five-star Hollywood blockbuster that just gets everything right. It’s a sun-dappled shot of pure, unadulterated joy.

The film’s aerial flight sequences never fail to inspire awe and wonder, and they tie back to the emotions of their pilots so seamlessly that Maverick reminds you why summer blockbusters were invented in the first place. When people look back decades from now at Cruise’s career, don’t be surprised if the image that’s returned to most often is him riding his motorcycle at sunset in this film’s opening minutes. No movie has captured his star power or what makes Cruise such a special figure in cinema history as well as this 2022 hit.

1. Mission: Impossible — Fallout (2018)

Top Gun: Maverick may end up being the most beloved and well-known movie of Tom Cruise’s career, but not even it manages to top the pure craftsmanship and adrenaline-pumping set pieces of Mission: Impossible — Fallout .

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film makes up for its inability to top Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol ’s skyscraper stunt by delivering a succession of some of the most intense, well-edited, and complicated action sequences you’ll ever see. From the film’s practical first-act HALO jump and untouchable Paris chase to its London-set footrace and climactic helicopter showdown, Fallout is overflowing with stunts, images, and action beats that are guaranteed to make your jaw drop.

Beyond its major, show-stopping stunts, though, Fallout also contains the best fistfight of any Mission: Impossible movie to date (see: the Henry Cavill-led bathroom brawl) and a final, cliffside confrontation that is as exhausting as it is awe-inspiring. This is a movie that, like George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road , puts its hand around your throat and refuses to let go until its final seconds. As far as mainstream action movies go, it’s unrivaled. No film makes Cruise’s willingness to put his own body on the line for our enjoyment as blatantly clear as Mission: Impossible — Fallout does.

Tom Cruise's Best Action Movies, Ranked

In anticipation of the new Top Gun and Mission Impossible movies, take a look at the mid-career action renaissance of Tom Cruise.

Although many actors take on less physically demanding roles as they age, Tom Cruise has done just the opposite. Most people think that the best Tom Cruise movies are his more dramatic roles, but over the years he has taken on more difficult and demanding action adventure movies and less emotional and comedic roles like Risky Business and Rain Man . He has practically shifted into full-blown action superstar.

Lately, Cruise's name has become synonymous with movie stars who do their own stunts , and his recent films are known for their dangerous and thrilling action sequences. We have come to love him for his intense work ethic and larger than life action heroes. If you are excited for some of his movies coming out later this year, like Top Gun: Maverick , then here is a list of some of Tom Cruise's best action adventure movies to watch while you wait.

In the post-apocalyptic Oblivion , Jack Harper lives on Earth long after an alien invasion destroyed much of the planet and people abandoned it. He works to scavenge and repair old technology, but his memory is often wiped for security purposes. When he finds a mysterious woman from his past, he questions his own identity and reality.

Many agree that this film's plot did not live up to its potential. The movie's premise and special effects are out of this world, but the story relies on long monologues to explain what's happening. Tom Cruise pulls off the emotional and physical weight this role required, however. Even though at times the audience may be just as confused as the main character, If you buy into the explanations and don't think too hard, the movie can still be a fun thought experiment to watch and wonder 'what if,' and the action scenes have fantastic effects.

8 The Last Samurai

In The Last Samurai , Cruise stars as Captain Nathan Algren, an American officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to teach advanced western fighting techniques to the samurai. When the westerners try to wipe out the samurai, Nathan finds himself caught in the middle of a war with allies on both sides. In this role, Cruise brings to life details in the various fighting styles and cultural mannerisms the film portrays. The Last Samura allows him not only to show off his stunt capabilities, but also to showcase his emotional depth in one of the more dramatic performance of his late action career.

7 Knight and Day

In the almost satirical action adventure Knight and Day , Tom Cruise plays the larger than life action star we know him for. We would call his character overconfident if he weren't so good at his job. Roy meets June at an airport when they board the same flight. However, when it becomes obvious that June is the only pedestrian on the airplane (everyone else is there to kill Roy) she becomes involved in a life-changing adventure. Cruise was perfectly cast for this role and brings with him a grandiose energy and commitment. Cruise and Cameron Diaz have great chemistry as well, which helps seal the deal for this hilarious rollercoaster of a story.

6 Jack Reacher

When an ex-military sniper implicates Jack Reacher in the murder of five people, Reacher goes on the run to investigate what really happened. This film had some mixed reviews from critics, with some complaining that the film lacks originality. Although Jack Reacher follows a primarily simple story, Cruise pulls off Reacher's humorous personality just as well as our other favorite actors did.

5 Collateral

Cruise stars as a hitman, Vincent, who hires an everyday taxi driver to be his getaway driver in Michael Mann's stylish Collateral . As the driver (Jamie Foxx) learns more about Vincent's line of work, he begins to fight back against the assassin's malicious acts. This is one of the coolest hitman movies , and one of the very few movies where Tom Cruise plays the villain rather than the hero. Even though it isn't the hero we are accustomed to seeing him play, Cruise knocks this performance out of the park alongside co-star Jamie Foxx. Cruise is just as terrifying as this hitman as he is lovable in his other roles.

Top Gun was so good that even after 34 years, its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick , is one of the most anticipated movies of 2022 . Once again, Cruise plays an overconfident, ego-driven character. He competes with the best of the best to be a great pilot in his division and get the girl of his dreams. Most of the intense sequences are airplane chases rather than hand-to-hand combat, but we still love the energy Cruise brings to the performance, one of his first action roles. And as a special side bonus, we even get to see him sing.

3 Minority Report

In the classic science fiction film Minority Report , Tom Cruise outmaneuvers the most sophisticated AI technology. In a world where crimes are prevented by computer algorithms (through pre-cogs), John Anderton is arrested for a crime he hasn't committed yet. Minority Report is such an intense film both because of its action and its philosophical questions. We love Tom Cruise in this role for his attention to detail and for his performance in fast-paced and difficult action sequences.

2 Edge of Tomorrow

As humans wage war against the invading alien species, Bill Cage stays as far from the front lines as possible in Edge of Tomorrow . However, when he finds himself on the front lines of the alien's latest massacre, an accident gives him the ability to travel back in time only one day each time he dies.

Some consider this film to be one of the greatest time travel stories since Groundhog Day (which it borrows heavily from). The unique premise with Cruise's strange but limited power provides a thrilling story, and Cruise is absolutely delightful as a comically clueless solider as well as the kind and brave hero. Emily Blunt matches Cruise's larger-than life heroism in her role as well, and arguably bests him.

1 Mission Impossible Franchise

The Mission Impossible movies are by far Cruise's best and most popular action movies. If the fact that there are six movies in the series (with two more on their way) aren't enough to show their popularity, then their very high scores on Rotten Tomatoes certainly will. It's rare that even the sixth installment in a franchise will make nearly $800 million, as Mission Impossible: Fallout did.

In this franchise, Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, an American spy sent on the most dangerous and difficult missions. Ethan works with cutting edge technology and a diverse team to stop global threats from literally destroying the world. The movies are filled with some of the best American action sequences of all time, groundbreaking special effects, and brilliantly elaborate set pieces.

Cruise pulls off this iconic character with his own charisma and larger than life personality. The actor's work ethic comes through as he performs countless dangerous stunts like hanging off of a flying plane, scaling humongous buildings, or riding a motorcycle off of a cliff. His efforts may seem extreme to some, but they make a big difference in the believability of the franchise, which remains arguably the most beloved action movie series outside of Jame Bond.

All 44 Tom Cruise movies, ranked from worst to best

  • Tom Cruise has done every type of movie you can think of over his nearly 40-year career.
  • Here we rank every one from worst to best.
  • See where his latest, "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One," ranks in his career filmography.

43. "Rock of Ages" (2012)

tom cruise action films

Somehow Cruise got roped into being part of this feature-film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. But leave it to him to lay it all out there.

Though the movie is unwatchable, Cruise provides its only memorable moments when his rock-star character belts out classic songs like "Pour Some Sugar on Me" and "Wanted Dead or Alive."

42. "Endless Love" (1981)

tom cruise action films

Cruise's first appearance in a movie is this 1980s teen romance drama starring Brooke Shields that's best known for giving us the Diana Ross/Lionel Richie title song.

Cruise gets a brief bit of screen time as one of the male lead's friends. It's quite forgettable, but it's still better than "Rock of Ages."

41. "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" (2016)

tom cruise action films

Between "Mission: Impossible" movies, Cruise tried to kick off another action franchise by bringing the main character of the Lee Child novel series to the big screen.

Though the first movie just got over the $200 million mark at the worldwide box office, the performance (or lack thereof) by the sequel indicated no one wanted any more Mr. Reacher. It barely made $162 million worldwide.

40. "The Mummy" (2017)

tom cruise action films

Cruise was all set to be the Robert Downey Jr. of Universal's Dark Universe with the release of this movie and promises of more creature pictures to come. But playing a soldier of fortune who tries to stop an ancient Egyptian princess from taking over the world didn't grab audiences. It was another franchise not meant to be.

39. "Losin' It" (1983)

tom cruise action films

Still getting his legs under him in the movie biz, Cruise signed onto this teen comedy in which he's one of four friends who go on a hard-partying road trip to Tijuana in hopes of losing their virginity. Yes, even Cruise couldn't hide from the teen-sex-comedy genre when he started his career.

38. "Mission: Impossible II" (2000)

tom cruise action films

Man, John Woo deserved better than this. The legendary Hong Kong director took over the "Mission: Impossible" reins after Brian De Palma kicked things off with the first movie, but Woo didn't find the same success.

"Mission: Impossible II" did go on to become one of the highest-grossing movies of 2000, with over $546 million earned worldwide, but with its weak plot and character development, it has not aged anywhere near as well as the first movie (or the other movies in the franchise).

37. "Jack Reacher" (2012)

tom cruise action films

Though "Jack Reacher" was the first time Cruise worked with his longtime "Mission: Impossible" director, Christopher McQuarrie, and it features the legendary director Werner Herzog as the movie's villain, Cruise as Jack Reacher is a seen-it-before character who isn't exciting.

36. "Oblivion" (2013)

tom cruise action films

Here, Cruise attempted to go the sci-fi route in hopes of having a breakthrough "Minority Report"-like experience for the audience. But the story was nowhere as sharp, and its postapocalyptic vibe left us all feeling uninterested.

35. "Lions for Lambs" (2007)

tom cruise action films

Marking the first movie released by United Artists after Cruise and his producing partner Paula Wagner took over (the two left UA after a couple of years) was "Lions for Lambs," a tense drama set around the war in Afghanistan and directed by Robert Redford.

Cruise gave his all playing an agenda-pushing senator and has some strong scenes opposite Meryl Streep. But the movie is just dull.

34. "Far and Away" (1992)

tom cruise action films

Cruise and his wife at the time, Nicole Kidman, paired together in this 1890s-set epic directed by Ron Howard. The two play Irish immigrants seeking a fortune in America. Outside the lush photography, there isn't much to enjoy about this movie. And don't get me started on Cruise's awful Irish accent.

33. "Vanilla Sky" (2001)

tom cruise action films

At the tail end of Cruise's heartthrob phase, the director Cameron Crowe teamed with him again after their hugely successful collaboration on "Jerry Maguire" to make a very different love story.

Based on the Spanish movie "Open Your Eyes," Cruise plays a vain New York City media playboy who has a different outlook on life after being in a horrific car crash. Though Cruise, Cameron Diaz, and Penélope Cruz (who also starred in "Open Your Eyes") all give top performances, Crowe goes too weird with the story, leaving viewers out in the void by the time the movie gets into the home stretch.

32. "American Made" (2017)

tom cruise action films

Mixing action and dark comedy in telling the real-life story of the drug runner Barry Seal seemed like a nice pivot for Cruise, but at the end of the day, the director Doug Liman's movie is just too glossy to be taken seriously. (Accent update: Cruise delivers a tolerable Southern drawl.)

31. "The Last Samurai" (2003)

tom cruise action films

Cruise stars as an American soldier in 19th-century Japan who embraces the samurai culture. The movie went on to receive four Oscar nominations, but it's the kind of title in which one viewing is enough.

And on a side note: Wow, would this movie get hammered on social media if it came out today.

30. "Valkyrie" (2008)

tom cruise action films

Another release from the time Cruise was calling the shots at UA, "Valkyrie" sees him playing one of the rogue Nazi officers who attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler.

(Accent update: Cruise — and basically most of the other Nazi officers — decided to not even bother with a German accent. Good choice; the audience didn't even notice [ holds back giggles ].)

29. "Cocktail" (1988)

tom cruise action films

It's one of the movies in Cruise's career that ride fully on his good looks. Honestly, this movie should have just been titled "Sex." Cruise plays a hot New York City bartender who has dreams of making it big, and it's his hotness that's going to get him to the top. It's classic Hot Guy Cruise — who cares that the story is garbage.

28. "War of the Worlds" (2005)

tom cruise action films

Steven Spielberg teamed up with Cruise after "Minority Report" for this blockbuster remake of the classic sci-fi movie. Though it made a lot of money, it was dark in tone — maybe a little too dark. Be honest: Have you wanted to see this movie again?

27. "Knight and Day" (2010)

tom cruise action films

This is one of those movies that don't get enough credit. The director James Mangold cleverly takes all the common action-hero traits and has Cruise make fun of them. You might want to give this one another viewing.

26. "Taps" (1981)

tom cruise action films

Unlike in "Endless Love," Cruise really capitalized on this small role. As a military cadet who takes his responsibilities way too seriously, Cruise is a standout in the movie and showed audiences (and Hollywood executives) that he had leading-man potential.

25. "Mission: Impossible III" (2006)

tom cruise action films

J.J. Abrams takes over the franchise for this one and does an impressive job. It also helps that you have the talents of Philip Seymour Hoffman playing the villain. It's better than "Mission: Impossible II," so we're going in the right direction.

24. "The Outsiders" (1983)

tom cruise action films

Francis Ford Coppola's adaptation of the classic novel brought all the biggest names from young Hollywood together, and Cruise was right there in the mix. With Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Emilio Estevez, and Rob Lowe, the movie is pretty heavy-handed with the drama, but it's fun to watch all these amazing talents on the screen together.

23. "Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation" (2015)

tom cruise action films

Rebounding from the so-so performance of "Jack Reacher," McQuarrie jumps on the "Mission: Impossible" franchise and ups the action stakes. Yep, this is the one where Cruise hangs from the side of a giant plane taking off. The movie also got an extra jolt with the inclusion of Rebecca Ferguson in the supporting cast.

22. "Mission: Impossible — Fallout" (2018)

tom cruise action films

This "Mission: Impossible" could go down as one of the best action movies ever — its stunts and action sequences are that amazing. This time, McQuarrie gives us a deeper look at what makes Ethan Hunt tick and the values he lives by. But it's really the action that stays with you.

21. "Minority Report" (2002)

tom cruise action films

With its breakthroughs in CGI and tech, the first teaming of Spielberg and Cruise lived up to the hype. This movie was so advanced in its execution and what it showcased that it had a "Jurassic Park"-style ripple effect, in the sense that it has influenced countless action and sci-fi movies since.

20. "Tropic Thunder" (2008)

tom cruise action films

Though Cruise doesn't have a lot of screen time, his presence in this movie cannot be ignored. Playing a despicable movie executive named Les Grossman, he brings that patented intensity to a role that for most actors would have been a mail-it-in cameo role. In Cruise's hands, it's one of the best comedic performances of the early 2000s.

19. "All the Right Moves" (1983)

tom cruise action films

Two months after Cruise hit theaters with his first lead movie, "Risky Business," he was back again with this very different movie about a Pennsylvania high-school football player who clashes with his coach.

"Risky Business" showed that Cruise had no problem being the face of a movie, but "All the Right Moves" proved he could be more than the charming lead with good looks. This one showed he could be a serious actor.

18. "Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol" (2011)

tom cruise action films

It's the movie that breathed life back into the "Mission: Impossible" franchise. It came five years after "Mission: Impossible III," and in that time Cruise struggled with an image problem and a string of underperforming movies. He had a lot to prove with this one. And with the casting of Jeremy Renner, Cruise probably sensed he could lose his beloved franchise if the movie didn't work.

However, Brad Bird's direction and Cruise's disregard for common sense — in this one he climbs the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, in Dubai — put him back on top, as the movie became a global hit.

17. "Top Gun" (1986)

tom cruise action films

Before "Days of Thunder," Cruise and Tony Scott teamed up for what would become one of the actor's most iconic roles: the fighter pilot Maverick. What Cruise doesn't pull off acting-wise he makes up for with brooding looks and shirtless volleyball skills.

16. "The Firm" (1993)

tom cruise action films

In "The Firm," based on the best-selling John Grisham novel, Cruise gives a fantastic performance as a hotshot lawyer who signs on with one of the most prestigious US law firms only to find it has quite a dark side. The era of "Tom Cruise runs" really launched with this movie.

15. "Legend" (1985)

tom cruise action films

Ridley Scott's beautiful fantasy movie is still a marvel of moviemaking. The practical effects and production design put into this movie, made back when CGI was scarce, are a treasure. And at the center is a fresh-faced Cruise who tries to get his girl back from the villain who gave me the most nightmares as a kid, Darkness (played perfectly by Tim Curry).

14. "Collateral" (2004)

tom cruise action films

We really don't talk enough about this one enough. Michael Mann's slow-burn crime movie stars Cruise as a hitman who forces a cab driver (Jamie Foxx) to drive him around Los Angeles as he goes on his "jobs." The acting by both Cruise and Foxx in this movie is some of their best work.

13. "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" (2023)

tom cruise action films

There are many things to love about the "Mission: Impossible" franchise: Its James Bond-like gadgets. Cruise's disregard for his life and safety when it comes to pulling off amazing stunts . But the biggest thing to love is that the films just seem to get better and better.

The first "M:I," directed by Brian De Palma, set the bar very high. However, since McQuarrie took the reins in 2015 with "Rogue Nation," the franchise has gotten a jolt in the arm. It seems to always outdo itself, and "Dead Reckoning" makes good on that promise.

The high stakes, the timely villain being AI, and, of course, Tom Cruise in the middle of some amazing thrills makes this film one of the best in the franchise.

13. "Eyes Wide Shut" (1999)

tom cruise action films

Cruise and Kidman teamed up again, this time under the watch of Stanley Kubrick in what would be his final movie. Both actors are pushed to the limits as the movie explores a marriage at a crossroads. Though "Eyes Wide Shut" is not close to Kubrick's best work, Cruise and Kidman are riveting.

12. "Top Gun: Maverick" (2022)

tom cruise action films

Thirty-six years after playing Pete "Maverick" Mitchell he returns to the role in the rare legacy sequel that's better than the original movie.

Though Tony Scott's landmark "Top Gun" made Cruise a superstar and became an instant 1980s classic, the director Joseph Kosinski has elevated the story with more death-defying dogfight jet stunts and a more compelling story.

This time Maverick returns to the Top Gun school to be a teacher of the new hot-shot pilots. But he must deal with his own demons as one of the students is the son of his best friend, Goose, who died in his arms in the first movie.

Cruise delivers one of his best performances in years.

11. "Days of Thunder" (1990)

tom cruise action films

It's pretty much everything you would think would be in a Tony Scott movie: lots of fast cars and big egos. Cruise is in his glory in every scene playing the hot-shot Nascar driver Cole Trickle (and Kidman appears as his love interest).

10. "Risky Business" (1983)

tom cruise action films

It's the movie that made Cruise a star. The coming-of-age story doesn't shy away from its mature storyline, and Cruise delivers a playful performance but also shows sparks of his dramatic chops that he'll showcase in the decade to come.

9. "Mission: Impossible" (1996)

tom cruise action films

Boy have things changed since the first "Mission: Impossible." With De Palma at the helm, the movie had its action, but it was encased in a tense whodunit thriller. Since then the action has only gotten bigger (and the story, well, less of a concern), but Cruise has always been fantastic as Hunt.

The first movie is his best acting work of the franchise. (Accent update: Cruise delivers another Southern accent while disguised at the beginning of the movie — one of those classic face-rip-off disguises. It's brief but effective in the scene.)

8. "Interview with the Vampire" (1994)

tom cruise action films

Cruise gives one of his best performances as Lestat, a vampire from the 1700s who finds a lot of drama in his undead life once he recruits Louis (Brad Pitt). (Accent update: His little hint of a French accent to stay true to the character's portrayal in the classic Anne Rice book is perfectly subtle.)

7. "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014)

tom cruise action films

Whether you want to call it "Edge of Tomorrow" or "Live. Die. Repeat.," it's just a really great action movie. With Liman directing and McQuarrie as a screenwriter, Cruise is surrounded by people he trusts to make a risky project: a soldier who relives the same day. But the MVP of the movie is Emily Blunt, who delivers a performance that makes Cruise kick it up a few notches.

6. "Rain Man" (1988)

tom cruise action films

Always at his best when he's playing a character with major conflict, Cruise plays a guy always looking to capitalize on the angles until he's finally in a situation in which he has to be on the level: building a relationship with his autistic savant brother (Dustin Hoffman).

5. "Jerry Maguire" (1996)

tom cruise action films

Receiving a best-actor nomination for his performance as a slick sports agent whose life turns upside down after having a moment of clarity, Cruise was, thanks to this movie, at his height of stardom and power in Hollywood.

4. "A Few Good Men" (1992)

tom cruise action films

Rob Reiner's courtroom drama has Cruise going up against Jack Nicholson, and it's pure magic. Yes, there's the "can't handle the truth" scene, but for us, it starts earlier in the movie when the two characters meet for the first time.

Thanks to the incredible dialogue by Aaron Sorkin, both actors subtly trade off with each other, but it's the fire being held back that makes the ending when they are face-to-face again so memorable.

3. "Magnolia" (1999)

tom cruise action films

No matter what you think of Paul Thomas Anderson's epic look at family, love, and forgiveness, it's hard to dispute that it has the most powerful performance of Cruise's career.

Playing a pickup artist who uses his talents to build a public-speaking career, Cruise appears as we've never seen him before. Anderson and Cruise connected over dealing with the loss of their fathers and use that darkness to create the character of Frank T. J. Mackey.

2. "The Color of Money" (1986)

tom cruise action films

Paul Newman won only one Oscar in his iconic career, and it was for this movie. But you have to give a big assist to Cruise.

Playing the protégé to the pool player "Fast Eddie" Felson — the role Newman first played in 1961's "The Hustler" — Cruise is a cocky player, and you can never tell whether he's on the level with Felson. Cruise proved once again that he's more than just a pretty face.

1. "Born on the Fourth of July" (1989)

tom cruise action films

Cruise got an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the veteran and activist Ron Kovic, who was paralyzed fighting in Vietnam. Oliver Stone traces Kovic's journey from being a wide-eyed soldier thinking he's doing what's right for America to coming home from the war to find everything has changed. Including the way he views his own country.

Cruise has never been better as he delivers a tour de force performance that still gives us chills.

Wild Facts All Fans Should Know

How Tom Cruise Rebranded Himself Into Our Most Reliable Action Hero

With the release of The Mummy , we look back at the actor's best—and worst—action roles in the last decade.

Forehead, Collar, Glove, Fictional character, Shooter game, Pocket, Button,

It's summer movie season, which means that Tom Cruise is kicking, shooting, and sprinting his way to a local Cineplex near you. This year, his one-man thrill ride takes place in The Mummy , the first of Universal's recently announced Dark Universe that puts Cruise at the crux of another franchise operation, asking him to corral the bad guys, monsters and spirits to save humanity once again. It might sound more exhausting if Cruise looked it. But take a glance at Cruise's recent body of work and you'll realize that this type of heroism is just business as usual. He's built up quite a tolerance.

The inevitability of Cruise becoming a reliable, bankable action star wouldn't have been so clear more than a decade ago. Sure, he had good looks, could play a spy, hold a gun, and fly planes here and there. But he also committed to taking risks, playing vulnerable ( Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut ), charismatic ( Jerry Maguire ), and satirical ( Tropic Thunder ) while working with directors and actors that challenged and reinforced his leading-man status. The rare constant in this diversity was the smile he cheesed early in his career, which spelled out his movie stardom so brightly on each tooth you needed sunglasses. But the glint wore off starting around the fallout from a War of the Worlds press tour, which exposed his occasional maniacal behavior and devotion to Scientology. It turned some studios sour and forced him to play defense. Save the world, save your career.

What better way to retrieve it than by out-running, jumping, and passport-stamping the competition?

Cruise hasn't strayed too far from the action genre over the last seven years. From one angle, this is disappointing; from another, it's telling: Cruise wanted his stardom back. What better way to retrieve it than by outrunning, jumping, and passport-stamping the competition? Like a shark, Cruise, even into his 50s, can't slow down; he performs his own stunts, expends total effort and energy, and proves his dedication. It's the only way he knows how. And while his movies during this period have been anything but consistent, you never doubt the authenticity he's giving to each of his relatively similar characters.

But these are, indeed, different movies and franchises that require slightly varied performances. So, in this continuing, likely expanding, wave of his career, here's a ranking of his multiple characters—factoring in motivation, bad-assery, and verbal quips—from least to most Tom Cruise-ness.

Technology, Smoke, Song, Singing, Glove, Singer, Tobacco products,

Oblivion (2013)

Character: Jack Harper

Motivation: After a war between aliens and humans 60 years ago that left the earth mostly uninhabitable, the remaining population is shuttled to an intergalactic life house. Donning a Yankee cap to display his inner New Yorker, Harper is tasked with repairing drones on earth that guard hydro-electric generators for the surviving human colonies.

Analysis: Was that job description boring? In this mostly sleepy sci-fi vehicle , somehow Cruise isn't able to jolt you awake. Which is a shame, considering at one point he gets into a fistfight with a clone of himself. Even at the center of a sterile love triangle between Andrea Riseborough and Olga Kurylenko, Cruise isn't allowed to do much more than grimace and shoot artillery. He does have exceptional helicoptering skills that provide a few crescendos of action that is otherwise relegated to running from and gunning down droids. In a movie that takes its cues from a plethora of genre tropes including Planet of the Apes , Cruise has no real Charlton Heston moment. He, like his character, is just a carbon copy.

Memorable Quote: "If we have souls, they are made of the love we share."

Movie, Action film, Scene, Photography, Fictional character,

Knight and Day (2010)

Character: Roy Miller

Motivation: Described as the "most trusted and capable covert agent in the world," Miller has possession of a perpetual energy battery that the CIA believes he wants to sell on the black market. He uses a run-in with a random woman (Cameron Diaz) to help protect him and his cargo while trying to expose the real rogue agent.

Analysis: There might be one scene in Knight and Day when Cruise looks just a bit pestered. He's on what he thinks is an untraceable island until a government drone starts firing rockets at him. But never fear: Roy Miller always has an exit plan. In this case, it's on his helicopter that he flies to safety. He's quickly on a train to Austria. Then he's motorcycling his way through Spain being chased by bulls through the streets. This was the early indication that Cruise is at his happiest shredding the competition, without a bead of sweat to show for it. He and Diaz have enough chemistry to make this preposterous duo work. But really, this scatter-brained, silly movie is an exercise in showing that Cruise can captain any kind of vehicle, under any circumstance, and make us root for him despite all the story's evidence suggesting we shouldn't.

Memorable quote: "Sometimes things happen for a reason."

Movie, Action film, Fictional character,

Jack Reacher (2012)

Character : Jack Reacher

Motivation : As an ex-military investigative officer, Reacher shows up in Pittsburgh at the behest of a former solider, who is being framed for a sniper attack that has shady motivations. His goal is to find the real killer.

Analysis: Even though this film franchise suffocates the thrills from its plotlines, Cruise still manages to draw interest as an almost mythic avenger. He looks annoyed that he must weave around an incompetent and corrupt police system to find justice. The impediments thrown in his way are just that—a heavy sigh accompanies a group of street thugs hired to kill him as he outlines precisely how he will knock each of them out. "Remember, you wanted this," he warns them, and then it's too late. Reacher finds creative ways to kill—using one person's head to knock another's out—but there's little joy in watching him work. It's just a little too calculated. The same could be said for his relationship with Rosamund Pike's defense attorney, who found out too late that Cruise steals all the oxygen from the room. When Reacher gets the job done, you're left thoroughly impressed but equally underwhelmed.

Memorable quote: "I'm here to beat you to death and drink your blood from a boot."

Adventure game, Screenshot, Fictional character, Movie, Suit, Electric blue, Digital compositing, Darkness,

The Mummy (2017)

Character : Nick Morton

Motivation: After awakening an ancient princess from her buried sarcophagus during a reconnaissance expedition, Morton is cursed to be a human vessel for the God of Death. He must determine a way to reverse this spell before evil manifests inside his body.

Analysis: It only takes a few minutes for Morton to convince his partner (Jake Johnson) to explore a small Iraqi town filled with insurgents. It's a bad idea, and, naturally, they are met with gunfire. Cruise shows off his endurance, though, by avoiding bullets, jumping over rooftops, and surviving an air strike. This is just an appetizer for the malevolent entrée looming. Soon he's getting tossed like a rag doll in zero gravity as a bomber plane spirals to the earth and is later thrown from an ambulance that rolls perilously off a hill. He follows that up by sprinting, then swimming, away from some determined mummies in London, making sure the movie's title and genre aren't totally forgotten. The laughs are saved for Johnson and the narrative prophesying left for Russell Crowe. That leaves Cruise in a strange middle ground as the central action figure with nothing interesting to do but avoid an evil princess in pursuit of him (and discuss his stamina in bed with co-lead Annabelle Wallis). For the first time in his career, his character's cavalier attitude towards death doesn't avoid it, but unleashes it.

Memorable Quote: "I don't want to hurt you. I never wanted to hurt you."

Soldier, Fire, Pollution, Flame, Heat, Ballistic vest, Military person, Smoke, Action-adventure game, Marines,

Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)

Character: Will Cage

Motivation: Cage, a PR man for the military, is thrust into combat and must kill the energy source of an alien life form overtaking Europe without dying. Otherwise, he'll stay stuck in a time loop, waking up on the same day.

Analysis: What an exciting reminder of how much fun Cruise can be when he isn't the smartest, most daring person in the room—at least for a while. When he tells a military general early on, "I'm not a soldier," and that he can't stand the sight of blood, the director Doug Liman is toying with us. But it's also an opportunity to show Cruise struggle for once: lumbering around in his protective armor, figuring out how to turn off his gun's safety. Eventually, after re-living the same day over and over, he reacquires the cockiness we remember, a step ahead of his soldiers in the midst of hail fire. He also has an equal in Emily Blunt, who trades verbal blows with him during training. The soft spots they eventually find for each other feel genuinely earned. But Cruise has to work for it every time Cage is killed and wakes up. It's arguably the most sacrificial he's ever been. He keeps dying—day after day after day—to save us all. What more do you want?

Memorable quote: "What I'm about to tell you sounds crazy. But you have to listen to me. Your very lives depend on it."

Cool, Eyewear, Black hair, Illustration, Vehicle, Photography, Car, Art, Sunglasses, Games,

Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol (2011) and Rogue Nation (2015)

Character: Ethan Hunt

Motivation: Spy stuff! More specifically, Hunt and his crew are pursuing an ex-Russian government official who has stolen nuclear codes, bombed the Kremlin, and set up the IMF. In the most recent chapter, Hunt must stop a network of trained operatives from establishing a "new world order" using a series of terrorist attacks.

Analysis: Look at him dangling there, climbing up the side of Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. One of his special magnetic gloves has malfunctioned, and so Ethan must somehow shimmy his way up to gain access to a security system. This wouldn't be as mesmerizing if we didn't know that Cruise was actually doing all of this himself. Jump forward a few years and another sequel, and there he is again, hanging on for dear life. This time he's clinging to the door of a military-grade jet as it takes off, putting Cruise into equally high altitude without the studio spending a dime on a wind machine. Even though we have known Ethan for three previous movies dating back to 1996, Cruise keeps surprising us, making sure that every new adventure risks his own life just a little more. Sure, it's the adrenaline rush he craves, but it's authenticity he's chasing, a somewhat ironic pursuit considering his entire character is built on deception.

Memorable quote: "Mission accomplished."

The 10 Most Quotable Characters in Quentin Tarantino Movies, Ranked

All the movies and shows coming to prime video in june 2024, the 7 best new movies to watch on max in june 2024, read update.

As fans get ready to see Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One in theaters this July 12, it's the perfect time to revisit some of Tom Cruise's best movies.

Tom Cruise ’s versatility and screen presence has made him an actor that audiences continually love seeing on the big screen. Although Cruise got his start starring in coming-of-age dramas and some unique military movies, he quickly became a pivotal force in the action genre with films like Top Gun and Mission: Impossible that have made him legendary. Even heading into his 60s, Cruise continues to star in new original action flicks and still leads some of the franchises that initially made him iconic.

Cruise recently flew back into theaters with the long-awaited sequel to Top Gun , Maverick , reprising one of his most iconic roles as Maverick teaching a new generation of fighter pilots. He’s also set to cap off his time in the Mission: Impossible series with the upcoming two-parter Dead Reckoning , that’s said to be a proper send-off for Ethan Hunt. There’s still a sequel to one of the best Tom Cruise movies, Edge of Tomorrow , in the works. So, since his career is far from done, it’s a great time to establish the essential movies of Cruise’s career.

Updated on July 10, 2023, by Hannah Saab:

10 'risky business' (1983).

Before Cruise became the action icon, he’s now known as many fell in love with him for his performance and one particular scene where he dances in his drawers and plays a loser in Risky Business .

As a college-bound teen named Joel, Cruise stole every viewer’s heart with his undeniable charm and comedic wit that made his performance here an actual breakout moment for the actor. Plus, the underwear dance scene has become a pivotal moment in pop culture that’s still referenced to this day.

9 'American Made' (2017)

In Doug Liman ’s 2017 film American Made , Cruise found a real-life role perfectly fitting for the energy and charm he brings as he portrays Barry Seal , a former CIA pilot who became a drug smuggler and an informant for the DEA.

Cruise’s signature charismatic energy ultimately drives American Made ’s wild true story in the best way possible, and the charm he brings to the comedy and thrilling aspects of the film make it a great watch. It's an often overlooked yet fantastic movie in Tom Cruise's filmography.

8 'Interview With a Vampire' (1994)

It’s rare to see Cruise in a horror flick, but he did star in Neil Jordan ’s adaptation of Anne Rice ’s Interview with a Vampire as the bloodthirsty and somewhat villainous vampire Lestat.

Cruise’s performance as Lestat is vastly different from his other performances. The sheer darkness and brooding presence, along with the devious twist of his usual charm, make you wish and hope that there’s a chance that he could return to horror sometime soon. It's a great showcase of Cruise's versatility, as he's not performing wild stunts in an action film this time.

7 'Collateral' (2004)

If you’re looking for another haunting performance from Cruise that’ll leave you on edge every second he’s on-screen, look no further than Michael Mann 's Collateral .

In one of his most underrated performances, Cruise plays a calculated and cold hitman on a killing spree and holds viewers and an unsuspecting cab driver hostage as he takes them through a dark and thrilling nerve-shredder. Tom Cruise's turn as a villain shows he's more than an action hero.

6 'Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol' (2011)

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol might seem like a simple sequel in the Mission Impossible franchise, but the Brad Bird -directed fourth installment played a pivotal role in reestablishing the franchise and Cruise as an action hero.

Returns of big iconic franchises are pretty standard nowadays. However, Ghost Protocol gave the franchise a distinctly bigger feel and showed that Cruise has still got it in being a kick-ass leading man full of immense charisma and acting prowess. It also has some of Mission Impossible 's wildest stunts , all performed by the man himself.

5 'A Few Good Men' (1992)

Courtroom dramas are a rarity nowadays, but Cruise will forever have one of the subgenre’s most iconic performances in Rob Reiner ’s A Few Good Men , which revolves around the court-martial of two U.S. Marines and the legal proceedings for the case.

Along with his usual charm, Cruise brings fiery confidence and dramatic thrills as a Marine lawyer working on a court-martial case. In the film, he delivers one of his strongest performances to date, leading to an iconic and suspenseful confrontation in the courtroom.

4 'Edge of Tomorrow' (2014)

Another breakout action hit for Cruise was 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow , which saw him play a communications officer stuck in the middle of a time loop during a catastrophic war with an alien race.

Cruise leads a very engaging and action-packed time-loop movie with a strong story that perfectly blends genres. The highly-rated film showcases some great performances from Cruise and Emily Blunt , and tells a well-crafted narrative full of great hooks and captivating sci-fi action.

Watch on Max

3 'Top Gun' (1986)

When looking through Cruise’s filmography, there’s no better film to define who Cruise is as an actor than Top Gun since it turned him into a full-blown movie star. It's still one of the most beloved and best action movies from the '80s .

As hot-shot pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Cruise showcased all the charm and talent audiences have come to love about the actor in an electrifying and surprisingly emotional '80s action flick that defined the era and was a breakout hit. No wonder so many fans flocked to cinemas to watch its surprisingly good sequel.

2 'Mission: Impossible' (1996)

Along with Top Gun , Cruise became an action icon when he starred in Brian De Palma ’s 1996 action spy flick Mission: Impossible . The first movie follows Ethan Hunt's exploits after being framed for murder during a botched mission. While on the run, Ethan makes it his goal to uncover the conspiracy around him and find the actual traitor.

With Mission: Impossible , Cruise made Ethan Hunt an iconic name in the action genre and led the explosive and thrilling story that’s developed into one of the biggest and longest-running franchises in the action genre . To this day, Cruise continues to lead the franchise, and his work as Hunt is some of his best.

1 'Top Gun: Maverick' (2022)

It’s official. Critics and audiences agree that Top Gun: Maverick is the Top Gun sequel fans have wanted for years and one of Cruise’s best in years. The film depicts Maverick's experiences as he trains talented pilots for a special but dangerous assignment. Along the way, he faces painful parts of his past and thinks about his future.

Cruise’s return as Maverick is an absolute treat for fans, and his chemistry and clash with a new generation of pilots give the sequel a fresh and familiar feel. Also, the high-flying action is a tremendous step-up compared to the original, and Cruise slips back into the role with total ease.

By landing some iconic roles in the ‘ Mission: Impossible ‘ film series, ‘ Collateral ,’ ‘ Edge of Tomorrow ,’ and ‘ Top Gun: Maverick ,’ he established himself as an action star, performing most of the risky stunts on his own. The winner of three Golden Globe Awards, four nominations for the Oscars, and an Honorary Palme d’Or, Tom Cruise is known to be one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Given his immense popularity and fandom, most of our readers are looking forward to his future projects. Here is a list of all the upcoming movies and TV shows of Tom Cruise!

1. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (2024)

Tom Cruise recently jumped off a cliff on a motorbike for ‘ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ‘ and he will be in action soon enough in its sequel, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’ Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the spy action movie is the eighth installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time running.

Although the plot details are kept under wraps, the action-adventure film is most likely to resume Ethan’s hunt for The Entity as he meets some new friends and foes along the way. The production for the sequel began in March 2022 but is yet to be finished due to the delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Having gone through several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to its release date, it is now officially set to be released on June 28, 2024. But it is very much possible that it will get postponed again due to the pause in production.

2. Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project (TBA)

Tom Cruise is set to take his status as an action star to the next level by traveling out of Earth to film the first ever Hollywood motion picture in outer space. In May 2020, it was reported that Elon Musk’s Space X and Cruise were working on an action-adventure project with NASA. Not only is Cruise expected to be blasted into space alongside filmmaker Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked in ‘ American Made ‘ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ for the upcoming film, but he will also live up to his reputation by attempting to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station. In this movie, Cruise is set to essay the role of a down-on-his-luck man who is the sole person in the position to save Earth. Apart from starring in the film, he is attached to the project as a writer as well as a producer.

3. Live Die Repeat and Repeat (TBA)

A sequel to the 2014 movie ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ is an upcoming science fiction film that will reportedly reunite Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, with the former set to reprise his role as Major William Cage. Moreover, Emily Blunt is also rumored to portray Rita again, alongside Cruise. Ever since the release of the hit original film, talks of a sequel have been flying around. However, in 2019, it was finally set in motion when Matthew Robinson was brought on to write the script.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, in a May 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly , Emily Blunt revealed, “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.” With the project still lingering in the development stage, it is hard to expect it to be brought to life in at least a couple of years.

One Forgotten Clint Eastwood R-Rated Thriller Becomes Next Weapon in Tom Cruise’s Arsenal as He Looks to Film a Remake of “The Gnarly Movie”

T om Cruise has been so busy with his Mission: Impossible films over the past few years that he hasn’t done as many other projects besides the action franchise. Now, rumors have been spreading online that he’s going to be starring in a Clint Eastwood remake with no other than Scarlett Johansson.

Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie previously teased fans about an R-rated “ gnarly ” film that he and the legendary action star have been prepping that fans started calling it The Gnarly Movie .

Tom Cruise Is Rumored To Star In A Remake Of The Gauntlet

In a Twitter post by MyTimeToShineHello , the industry insider shared Tom Cruise and Scarlett Johansson might be teaming up for an upcoming remake of Clint Eastwood ’s 1977 thriller movie The Gauntlet .

Scarlett Johansson and Tom Cruise will star in a remake of Clint Eastwood’s The Gauntlet at Warner Bros, directed by Christopher McQuarrie!

Eastwood starred in The Gauntlet as a police officer assigned to accompany an escort to Las Vegas to serve as a witness. The story is pretty predictable – things would get messed up and chaos would ensue.

“Tell me about your son”: Tom Cruise Showed His Vulnerable Side for 1 Emotional Scene in The Last Samurai Despite Being Notoriously Private in Real Life

Christopher McQuarrie once told Empire of his plans to work on another version of Reacher that is more violent and gruesome. Fans have since embraced R-rated movies thanks to successful franchises like Deadpool and Joker .

Tom and I were talking about, had the series continued, to take Reacher to a place where, in the post-Deadpool, post-Joker world, Reacher could have been an R-rated movie and an R-rated franchise and really fed into the brutality of those books. We were fully ready to lean into that .

He also teased fans by saying the project will be “ very un-Tom character ” which means they will witness a different kind of Tom Cruise that they’ve never seen before. It remains a mystery whether this project will push through in the near future as the actor still has another Mission: Impossible sequel coming in 2025.

Tom Cruise Is Eager To Work With Scarlett Johansson

As per earlier report, Cruise will be teaming up with Marvel star Scarlett Johansson . If this will be confirmed soon, then it is an absolute dream come true for the actress. She has previously confessed in an interview that she has always wanted to work with the Top Gun actor.

Fortunately, Cruise feels the same way. He shared in a conversation with ET Online that he would love to work with Johansson.

I’d love to make a movie with her! I’ve been wanting to make movie with her. She is enormously talented. So charismatic, versatile. She has great physical ability obviously .

At this point, a confirmation from Warner Bros is all that fans need. Cruise has become so attached to his work on the Mission: Impossible films. He is truly impressive with the stunts and fight scenes, but the audience would like to see more range in his acting skills.

“Tom thinks she is stunningly beautiful”: Industry Insider Claims Tom Cruise is Open to a Relationship with Top Gun: Maverick Co-star

The remake of The Gauntlet would definitely bring out all the qualities that made Cruise one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood.

The Gauntlet is available to watch on Prime Video.

Review: Stuffed with in-jokes for parents, ‘The Garfield Movie’ isn’t a cat-astrophe

A shocked dog and a puffed-up cat have an confrontation.

Since 1978, cartoonist Jim Davis has explored the quotidian dramas of pet ownership via the daily travails of beleaguered Jon Arbuckle, his eager dog, Odie, and the titular tubby orange tabby, Garfield. If the comic strip (the most widely syndicated in the world) is the weekly sitcom version of their story, then “The Garfield Movie,” the latest effort to bring Garfield to the big screen, is the oversized action-adventure film, replete with references and comparisons to Tom Cruise.

Those Cruise-inspired Easter eggs are laid not necessarily for kids but for the adults who have accompanied them to the theater, such as when the score references “Mission: Impossible” while an ox named Otto, voiced by Ving Rhames (who plays Cruise’s techie Luther in the action franchise), lays out the plan for a heist. Later, a triumphant climax featuring airborne food-delivery drones offers the chance for a bit of the “Top Gun” theme while Garfield (voiced by Chris Pratt) brags that he does his own stunts , “just like Tom Cruise.”

The line is a bit of over-emphasis that this is the big, thrilling version of Garfield, not a “Jeanne Dielman” -style study of domestic life. In fact, after a quick framing device that shows us Garfield’s heartstring-tugging history as a starving stray kitten who encounters Jon at an Italian restaurant, the film speeds through a quick montage of our favorite Garfield tropes: He loves lasagna, hates Mondays, torments Jon and manipulates Odie.

We know him, we love him: Garfield’s unique characteristics have been printed on coffee mugs for years. Now, on to the high-stakes and highly contrived plot. Garfield and Odie are kidnapped by a couple of thuggish pups, Nolan ( Bowen Yang ) and Roland (Brett Goldstein), who are working for a Persian cat named Jinx (Hannah Waddingham). She wants them to collaborate with Garfield’s deadbeat dad, Vic (Samuel L. Jackson), on a milk heist as revenge for the time she did in the pound after a scheme she and Vic pulled.

The heist plot allows for the action, adventure and suspense to come into play, as well as the aforementioned Tom Cruise references, along with nods to film noir and early silent films (there are a lot of sequences set on trains). There’s even a “Rashomon”-like flashback as we see Garfield’s childhood abandonment from Vic’s perspective, changing the way we understand how Garfield found himself alone in that alley that night. The heist may make up the majority of the story, but it’s merely a means by which an estranged father and son can escape the emotional prison of masculinity and express their feelings to each other.

“The Garfield Movie,” directed by Mark Dindal and written by Paul A. Kaplan, Mark Torgove and David Reynolds, may sport a deep knowledge of film history to delight cinephile parents, but it is still a kiddie movie and comes with the same zany, harried energy one might expect from such a project. The aesthetic hews closer to the look of the comic strip than the CGI/live-action abomination of the two Garfield movies of the early aughts, which is on trend with other animated films that embrace an illustrated style, though this is less edgy than some recent examples (the “Spider-verse” movies, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” ).

Bill Murray voiced the rusty, rotund feline in “Garfield: The Movie” (2004) and “Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties” (2006) in his dry, laconic manner, and Pratt does a fine job taking over vocal duties. Harvey Guillén offers his voice for Odie’s noises and the rest of the voice cast (Nicholas Hoult as Jon, Cecily Strong as a Midwestern security guard named Marge) round out their world.

Though the film is formulaic and somewhat annoyingly energetic, it’s cute and irreverent enough, and manages to bridge the generation gap, offering up a kid-friendly flick that can keep adults somewhat entertained for the duration, proving that even after all these years, Garfield’s still got it.

Maya Erskine Shares the Tom Cruise Trick That Helped Her Film ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’ Action Scenes

Maya Erskine

Since Maya Erskine burst onto our televisions in 2019 as a 31-year-old actress playing the socially inept 13-year-old Maya Ishii-Peters on Hulu’s “Pen15” (she also co-created the raucous show), her comedic path seemed a clear one. But then earlier this year, she switched it up with the very adult role of intrepid spy Jane Smith, whose cover is to be married for better or  for worse to fellow spy John Smith (Donald Glover) in Amazon Prime Video’s action-drama “ Mr. and Mrs. Smith .” Some may call the genre swap a 180-turn, but Erskine doesn’t see the leap as gargantuan.

Erskine says series co-creators Francesca Sloane and Glover helped her figure out how to inhabit someone who is hiding so much of who she is during deadly assignments and falling in love with her faux husband. “They gave me an extensive backstory, or at least the facts that they knew when we first started since I think more developed as we kept filming,” she says. “But there were certain things about Jane’s past that I knew wasn’t going to get revealed until the final episode. They had the idea of all the goalposts of the whole season in their head. That did help me.”

Given that most of her scenes were with Glover, she also had to develop a trust with someone she didn’t know very well, even though they both attended L.A.’s elite Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences. “He was older than me, but he was in this sketch comedy group that was kind of famous around the school,” Erskine recalls. “When we met, we might have had a few friends in common, but we didn’t even do a chemistry read, so it was really a blind faith of ‘Alright, this could work, or it could not. Let’s try it.’”

Part of that physical work included running in busy New York City areas such as Chinatown and the High Line. “I’m not a runner. I had smoked for many years, so my lung capacity was not great,” she admits. In fact, Glover was faster but would slow down when they had to be in the same shot.

However, Erskine learned one trick to not appear slow: “They taught me the Tom Cruise hand running,” she said, mimicking pumping wide hands. “And it actually makes it seem like you’re running incredibly fast.”

We’ll call this a mission not impossible.
