The continental breakfast was tasty with a huge variety of items to choose from

Everything was great, handy location close to time square, the staff were obliging. Brand-new and elegant units with 2 double beds.

The units are well-equipped, fashionable.

The staff was accommodating and smart, everything was good.

It has perfect staff and location, free wi-fi. We would stay here again, we enjoyed this ultimate hotel.

loved this place, it was tidy and had fantastic food and service. particularly nice view, a small balcony, lovely bed, too. pleased it had a bath. gorgeous interior, excellent restaurant. a serene place to stay in new york.

Cosy units with microwave and fridge. Fabulously helpful staff and altogether a very nice experience.

A bit small bathroom.

Decent location, really good facilities. The view from our double room was fantastic. Staff were more than helpful and made our stay as pleasant as it could be. The hotel was perfectly located for summer holidays.

I loved my stay, just special! Best personnel, amazing bed. Perfectly located close to a port. Large room, reasonably large bathroom.

Responsive staff and great swimming pool. I had king room which was excellent, exceptionally comfortable bed. They made my stay incredible. The service was absolutely excellent. You could walk to shops and supermarket.

The bed was comfy, so we had a really unforgettable stay. Attentive staff, great communication, magnificent location. Loved that it was right next to w 42 st bus station. Breakfast was generous and there was lots of food to choose from...

Shame the bathroom was wet.

The hotel was spotless and glorious, had stable wi-fi. The room I booked was well soundproofed and simply decorated. Early check-in, late check-out. Besides, parking was available on-site. It was perfectly located. Also - just off a police station, many restaurants and Times Square.

The property is very clean; good sized rooms; large bed. Employees at the hotel where kind.

Everything in the room was very clean. We had goodies and coffee at Signature Cafe and Bar, it was located really close to the venue.

Travel Inn Hotel New York

Midtown West, New York City, New York, United States

  • Full Review
  • Convenient location near Times Square and most major subway lines
  • Spacious rooms feature flat-screen TVs; some have microwaves and mini-fridges
  • Outdoor pool open seasonally
  • Small on-site business and fitness centers
  • Dated decor throughout property
  • No free Wi-Fi
  • No on-site restaurant or bar
  • No coffeemakers in rooms
  • Pool has limited hours
  • No free parking

Bottom Line

The Travel Inn is a solid budget option near Times Square. The decor and amenities are basic, though the hotel does feature on-site business and fitness centers, and an outdoor pool that is open seasonally. The 160-room property feels dated, but is in the process of being renovated. Wi-Fi also requires a daily fee. Visitors looking to stay in this area of Midtown West should check Yotel for more facilities (on-site restaurant, massive rooftop terrace) and free Wi-Fi, at similar price points.

Fitness Center

Oyster hotel review, a dated but tidy property near times square.

Stuffed leather couches and dark wood paneling in the lobby are just some of the details that make the hotel look dated. The hotel's common areas have seen better days, and the rooms are also worn. Some of the rooms overlook busy street traffic, while the inner rooms open onto the outdoor courtyard for a motel-like feel.

On a charmless block, a 15-minute walk from Times Square

The Travel Inn is located on a busy but bland stretch of 42nd Street on Manhattan's West Side. The hotel is three long avenue blocks from Times Square -- far away enough to avoid insane crowds, but within walking distance of more than 10 major subway lines -- and several blocks south of the heart of Hell's Kitchen, a lively neighborhood with restaurants and bars. Hudson River Park is also close by, and offers sightseeing cruises and seasonal activities like bike rentals.

  • 8-minute walk to Port Authority Bus Terminal
  • 11-minute walk to Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
  • 13-minute walk to Jacob K. Javits Convention Center
  • 16-minute walk to the Theater District
  • 20-minute walk to Penn Station and Madison Square Garden

Rooms at the Travel Inn are functional and spacious, but dated

The majority of rooms at the Travel Inn feature basic furniture and bland decor. The flat-screen TVs are a notable bonus. Rooms facing the central courtyard and on the upper floors are less susceptible to noise from the street and the subway running underground. Avoid the North Tower, which requires guests to walk through a parking garage to get to the elevator. The hotel is in the middle of a renovation, and several rooms have been upgraded to a brighter, more modern look. New furniture, impressive bathrooms, and better amenities (including iPod docking stations, microwaves, and mini-fridges) make these rooms more desirable. All rooms feature Ecossential toiletries, hairdryers, and ironing facilities.

On-site amenities are few, but the outdoor pool is a nice perk

The Travel Inn doesn't have a ton of amenities, but that helps keep rates low for travelers mostly interested in a good-value (and well-located) place to crash. A large supervised pool in the hotel's open-air courtyard is open seasonally and is a rare find for the price. The hotel does have a business and a fitness center, but they're small and sad-looking with few machines and computer stations respectively. There is no on-site restaurant or bar, though there is a diner next door. A parking garage next door charges a moderate daily fee.

Perfect,Perfect,Perfect!!!”

Our stay at The Travel Inn was perfect! From the price of room and the low cost of parking to the very helpful staff...we couldn't of asked for any more for our first time in New York. Subway couple blocks away, Times Square very close, and a friendly and good diner right next door. We had street facing room and barely heard a thing. Hotel room, lobby and pool very clean. One more great thing about The Travel Inn...check out is at 12:00 but they let you keep your car ther until 3:00. A+++

Lovely hotel and great location”

Honestly, I wasn't to thrilled about staying at Travel Inn at first. But once my daughter and I got there, we felt right at home. The room is spacious and there's a microwave, refrigerator and lots of electric plug-ins. The bathroom is a tad small, but it's not an issue. The location, for us, is perfect. There's a Chinese food restaurant at the end of the street, as well as a laundry service (by the pound), and a nice little convenience store. Across the street from the hotel is also a CVS. And right next to the hotel is a deli that opens until late in the afternoon. You don't have to look farther for a hearty meal or breakfast. Also, it's really close to Times Square and you won't have any problem finding a place to eat. The only downside is the front desk staff can be a bit unfriendly, though they try. I don't know if they were stressed out because of the upcoming Marathon or whatnot, but I asked to extend my stay several times and they didn't seem too happy to give me information and alternatives. The operator is really nice, though. She really helped us find an alternative to stay at the hotel for a few more days after Sandy hit NY because our flight had been cancelled. On my next trip, I'd definitely stay here again.

Close to great eating and subway.”

The room was clean, comfortable, and had a microwave and refrigerator. Grocery store one block up. Our room was on the north side. The train runs right by, but the noise did not bother us. It is very close to to the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Subway. Hell's Kitchen is one block away, with great dining selection. We walked to the theater district and Time Square after we discovered that is was only about four to five blocks away. We took the bus and then the subway to and from the airport. It was only $2.50 each and easy to do. Would only suggest doing that if bringing one small piece of luggage. We would stay at The Travel Inn again if returning to NYC.

Nice hotel with nice rooms”

We had 4 people in a double double room, and even with all our stuff, it did not feel cramped. The room was clean and well-decorated and the beds were comfortable. The location was on the famous 42nd street of New York City, but far enough away from the hustle and bustle of 7th avenue to be quiet and restful. We definitely recommend this hotel!

Nice hotel - good locationi”

Nice stay. Some challenges, but they were easily resolved with a kind helpful staff. The wifi were better in the main-building (same as reception was located). Rather special is that you eat your breakfast and lunch at the nearest neighbour - which also is administered by Travel Inn - together with visitors coming in from street. But it worked - and have a nice and friendly staff. Overall we will not hesitate to bill a new stay in Travel Inn, when we come back to NYC in the future Thank you for a pleasent stay Pleasent couple from Faroe Islands

Dinners in New York are considered sacred. Friends get together to catch up and gossip over bites and drinks; new romances bloom over elegant plates; and families unite around the table. And one spot that fits the bill for any occasion is located a stone’s throw from Rockefeller Center and Fifth Avenue shopping. The first thing you notice when you enter the Fasano , located on a quiet stretch of 49th street between Madison and Park Avenues, is how calming it is.

Despite the hustle and bustle of the banks and retailers in the area, the Fasano acts as an elegant escape from the madness. Gliding into the antechamber is an experience; awash in dark Brazilian quartz a moody, yet refined vibe greets guests contrasting the soothing main space in shades of beige and brown. Similarly smart are the diners - locals and visitors alike - dressed in tailored, unshowy ensembles nary a logo in sight.

Grand, but not grandiose, the room is punctuated with wood adding extra oomph and quiet sophistication. The music follows suit with an elegant soundtrack that is groovy enough to be heard and enjoyed, but not overpowering [read: intimate conversations can be had].

Located in the short-lived space used for the relocated Four Seasons dining room and designed by Brazilian architect Isay Weinfeld, the Fasano is well-suited to midtown. The executive chef, Nicola Fedeli, is Italian born and has worked for the company for numerous years.

Offering a la carte or a prix fixe, 3-course meal for $135, the options range from tuna tartare or beef carpaccio to start and include more indulgent and rich options such as vitello tonnato, burrata di bufala, along with a myriad of pasta dishes and meat and seafood all prepared in the traditions of northern Italy.

Course 1 — Panzanella

Taking a seat in the Edward Wormley chairs, the first course mirrored the aesthetic of the space. Composed, classic, and to the point. The bread was neatly diced with the perfect golden hue and crunch served with equally neat and precisely diced cucumber, halved cherry tomatoes, shaved radish, and red onion. Dressed with olive oil and red wine vinegar, the combination gained another layer through the accompanying slices of creamy, Buffalo mozzarella. Seasoned with a drizzle of herbed oil and ground black pepper, the combination provided textural balance.

*Editor's Note: At time of publication, the Panzanella has been replaced with the Polpo featuring octopus, chickpeas, scallions, and tomatoes.

Polpo / Eric Medsker / Fasano

Course 2 — Cappellacci

Of the pasta courses, this dish jumped out for its coziness. The stuffed, pinched pasta rounds, tinted black from squid ink, had a nice texture and were stuffed with a good amount of King crab filling which was seasoned and flavorful on its own. Dressed with a highly enjoyable saffron-seasoned, reduced fish fumet sauce, the dish also featured pieces of tender squid. This course has similar cues to the layout of the dining room as mid-century modern room dividers flank tables to feel distinct, but not isolated while plush carpeting below foot soothes with style.

Cappellaci / Eric Medsker / Fasano

Course 3 — Dentice

Carrying over the concept of clean aesthetics and flavors, the neat tranche of red snapper fillet—seared nicely crisp and with the perfect color of the skin—was set atop cherry tomatoes, shaved zucchini, and a few black olives in an Acqua Pazza broth. Like with the pasta course, the dressing was bold and highly enjoyable.

Dentice / Eric Medsker / Fasano

Course 4 — Tortina della Nonna

Dessert is a must, and the Tuscan dessert was served with a tender crust and filled with a bit of custard stuffed with pine nuts. Dusted with powdered sugar and set in some chilled crème Anglaise, and the look and taste were as smooth as the ambiance.

Tortina della Nonna / Eric Medsker / Fasano

Final thoughts:

As the first American operation of the Brazil-based Fasano hospitality group, the vast, spacious, and elegantly arranged dining room feels luxe and soothing. Flattering lighting throughout and with a section of front plaza seating make this a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs Allegedly Paid $50K to Obtain Hotel Security Footage of Cassie Assault: Lawsuit

  • Cassie's lawsuit filed in November claimed that Sean 'Diddy' Combs paid $50,000 to obtain hotel surveillance footage of a physical altercation that occurred between the two in 2016
  • CNN obtained footage of the incident, which occurred at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles
  • The newly surfaced video comes after Cassie settled her lawsuit against Combs one day after filing last November

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs allegedly paid the InterContinental Hotel $50,000 for the newly surfaced hallway footage that shows him physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie , during a March 2016 altercation, according to the latter’s bombshell civil lawsuit filed late last year .

The graphic surveillance video, released by CNN on May 17, shows Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura, now 37, exiting a hotel room and walking toward an elevator as Combs, now 54, chases her down the hall wearing a towel. When Combs reaches her, he grabs her by the neck and shoves her to the ground. As Ventura lies motionless, Combs turns around to kick her before he then grabs her purse and suitcase.

As Ventura continues to lie on the ground, Combs violently kicks her again and grabs her by her hoodie to briefly drag her toward the hallway before letting go and walking away with her belongings. A few moments later, Combs returns to grab Ventura near the elevator again before he sits down in a nearby chair, picks an object up off a table, and forcefully throws it at her. Combs then walks away but turns toward Ventura once more when an elevator door opens, and someone appears to exit.

A rep for Diddy did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment on the video.

Ventura's attorney Douglas H. Wigdor shared a statement with PEOPLE on Friday that says, “The gut-wrenching video has only further confirmed the disturbing and predatory behavior of Mr. Combs. Words cannot express the courage and fortitude that Ms. Ventura has shown in coming forward to bring this to light.”

In another statement also shared with PEOPLE, IHG Hotels responded to the newly surfaced footage, stating, “This hotel is no longer under IHG management, and we do not have any access to prior incident records or footage.”

Ventura’s lawsuit, which was filed in November and obtained by PEOPLE at the time, recalled the hotel incident in detail, alleging, “In or around March 2016, during an FO [“freak off”] at the InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles, Mr. Combs became extremely intoxicated and punched Ms. Ventura in the face, giving her a black eye.”

The 35-page complaint — brought under the Adult Survivors Act, a New York law that allowed sexual abuse victims to file civil suits within a one-year window even after the expiration of the statute of limitations —  also claimed, “After [Combs] fell asleep, Ms. Ventura tried to leave the hotel room, but as she exited, Mr. Combs awoke and began screaming at Ms. Ventura. He followed her into the hallway of the hotel while yelling at her. He grabbed at her, and then took glass vases in the hallway and threw them at her, causing glass to crash around them as she ran to the elevator to escape.”

It continued on, claiming Ventura managed to get into the elevator to get to the lobby, where she called a cab to her apartment.

“Upon realizing that her running away would cause Mr. Combs to be even angrier with her, and completely stuck in his vicious cycle of abuse,” the complaint added, “Ms. Ventura returned to the hotel with the intention of apologizing for running away from her abuser. When she returned, hotel security staff urged her to get back into a cab and go to her apartment, suggesting that they had seen the security footage showing Mr. Combs beating Ms. Ventura and throwing glass at her in the hotel hallway.”

The lawsuit then alleged, “Upon information and belief, Mr. Combs paid the InterContinental Century City $50,000 for the hallway security footage from that evening.”

Emma McIntyre/The Hollywood Reporter via Getty

Throughout her lawsuit, Ventura detailed other numerous accusations against Combs, alleging that he also raped and sex trafficked her during their relationship from 2007-2018, calling it a “vicious cycle of abuse” and “violence.”

One day after the lawsuit was filed, Combs and Ventura reached a settlement , announcing that they resolved the claims made to their "mutual satisfaction."

“I have decided to resolve this matter amicably on terms that I have some level of control,” Ventura said in a statement at the time. “I want to thank my family, fans and lawyers for their unwavering support.”

Combs added, “We have decided to resolve this matter amicably. I wish Cassie and her family all the best. Love.”

His attorney, Ben Brafman, clarified the music mogul’s stance on the issue, telling PEOPLE in a statement, "Just so we’re clear, a decision to settle a lawsuit, especially in 2023, is in no way an admission of wrongdoing. Mr. Combs‘ decision to settle the lawsuit does not in any way undermine his flat-out denial of the claims. He is happy they got to a mutual settlement and wishes Ms. Ventura the best."

Combs, who has maintained his innocence, first spoke out about the allegations against him on Dec. 6, 2023, per a statement obtained by PEOPLE that read, “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy. Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday.”

Following federal raids on his properties in March, Combs spoke out again, sharing a message on Instagram on May 15 that reads, “Time tells truth.” He signed off on the post, adding, “LOVE 🖤💫✨⚡️.”

Looking for ‘a Different Kind of Wow’: Next Level Hotel Experiences

From cooking with a Michelin-star chef to taking a chauffeured shopping spree in Singapore, hotels and resorts are offering ever-more-lavish activities for guests.

An illustration shows hotel guests involved in different experiences, clockwise from bottom left: watching a chef cook, hugging a tree, getting out of a helicopter, sitting on a couch in a field, with a masque on at a spa, and fishing.

By Amy Thomas

Heli-hiking on a remote slice of Vancouver Island in Canada. Concocting your own perfume in southern France. Planning a shoot with a New York fashion photographer.

Now that amenities like infinity pools and posh spas (rebranded as wellness centers) are practically de rigueur at upscale lodgings, many properties are trying to distinguish themselves with activities that are ever more bespoke and brag-worthy.

“All of this is part of the trend we’ve seen for a while, especially since the pandemic, when everyone wants what they want and they want everything hyper-customized to their interests and their requirements,” said Ashley Isaacs Ganz, the founder and chief executive of Artisans of Leisure , a luxury tour operator.

Indeed, said Janelle Ruhumuliza, a travel adviser with Embark Beyond , “experiences have to go further than what they were before.” She notes that social media has amplified travelers’ desire to “one-up” what others are doing online.

Hotels are feeling the urgency. “We have guests that are almost aggressive in how they want to experience something,” said Philippe Gills, who oversees the concierge team at the Langham, Chicago . “Even if it’s something that they’ve experienced before, they’re looking to do it new now, so we have to be creative.”

Next-level activities

Activities and experiences have long been part of luxury hotel offerings. But many current offerings come with extra cachet.

“We are constantly trying to find cool things for our guests to do,” said Olivier Lordonnois, who, as managing director of Aman , oversees the luxury resort company’s properties in the Americas, including its newest in New York City . That could mean an invitation to an artist’s private studio to learn about their process ($7,500) or mastering fish butchery and handcrafted sushi ($750).

The resort also partners with the camera manufacturer Leica and offers master classes, such as photography with the fashion photographer Mark de Paola, who will help guests run a true-to-life shoot that includes hair, makeup and styling. Guests photograph models at iconic New York backdrops (starting at $7,000, lunch at an Aman restaurant included).

Set in a rainforest on Vancouver Island, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge offers canyoning, horseback riding, salmon fishing and more. You can also take it to the next level and charter a helicopter to whisk you away for mountaintop adventures (650 Canadian dollars, or about $475, per person). “When you get to the top of the mountain, you’re talking to God,” said the general manager, Sarah Cruse. “I’ll send you up there with a bottle of Champagne and say, ‘Just sit down and have a chat.’”

Even resorts that offer a selection of activities included in the room rate take special pains to develop additional offerings. “Guests are paying a high room rate, so we need full programming and activities on the calendar,” said Corey Lens, the assistant general manager of Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport, Maine. That means no additional charge for forest-bathing sessions, watercolor lessons, and visits with orphaned owls, turtles and other wildlife. But you can also pay for extra sessions with a forest therapist to take you on a mindfulness hike ($85 per hour) or mixologists ($60) to level up your cocktail-making skills.

Exclusive access

Personalized experiences are something Annabel Rayer, a global communications director for IHG brands, which includes Six Senses , Regent , InterContinental and others, sees as nonnegotiable. “It’s not just the case of going for a Michelin-star meal,” she said. Our guests want to meet the chef, and they want to understand everything that’s going on.” At the InterContinental London Park Lane , that Michelin-starred chef is Theo Randall, and guests can learn from him in a kitchen master class before indulging in a four-course meal (from 185 euros, or about $200).

In France, at Carlton Cannes , a Regent hotel, guests explore the perfume capital of Grasse in a vintage Citroën 2CV and create their own fragrance with some of the world’s best perfumers (from 109 euros), and at the Regent resort on the Vietnamese island Phu Quoc, guests can get lessons from an expert sailing crew aboard a catamaran (64,000,000 Vietnamese dong, or about $2,520, for up to 12 guests).

In Chicago, the city where the architect Frank Lloyd Wright established himself, the Langham tempts guests with an intensive tour of his home, which he built for himself in 1889 in Oak Park, west of downtown.

The three-hour excursion ($1,240) includes a chauffeured ride to Oak Park, which has the highest concentration of Wright-designed houses in the world, along with a tour of Wright’s own home and studio. The experience, said Mr. Gills, of the Langham, gives guests a new perspective on someone they thought they knew. “It’s a different kind of ‘wow,’” he said.

Jesmine Hall is director of communications for Raffles Singapore . “We see a hotel being a destination for not just rest and rejuvenation,” she said, “but a setting for cultural immersion.” The hotel’s Enlightenment Retreat (from 7,800 Singapore dollars, or about $5,745) features four days of holistic treatments — including yoga, meditation, hydrotherapy herbal body wraps — along with personalized menus from the hotel’s restaurants. It also includes visits to the Singapore Botanic Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the Intan, a private house museum devoted to Peranakan culture — a mix of local and Chinese heritage. Tea with the owner, Alvin Yapp, well known in Singapore’s cultural circles, gives it that extra insider’s feel.

Exceptional locations

Sometimes the location itself is the experience. Rather than choosing downtown San Diego when it opened a new California location three years ago, Alila Hotels and Resorts went 28 miles north to Encinitas, Calif. “It’s this little beach town that’s always been known as a surf destination, always been known as laid-back and friendly,” said Emily Teachout, director of marketing for the 130-room Alia Marea Beach resort . Through Fulcrum Surf , a top-tier surf school, guests can take a one-hour lesson ($200) on the resort’s beach. Or they can opt for a private coastal tour ($925) to scope out the best breaks, take in the local scene and get an extended lesson on different surfboards.

Other resorts make the most out of their natural environment. When Jon Borschow, 72, and his wife, Galina, 68, of San Juan, P.R., arrived at Amanpulo resort on the private Pamalican Island in the Philippines, they noticed a lot of birds. Being amateur birders, they inquired about them and were offered a tour with the resident naturalist. “I would say we saw at least 30 different species,” said Mr. Borschow, including Thai imperial pigeons and a Philippine megapode.

Personalization. Personalization. Personalization.

“Travelers really just want to be taken care of by hotels and have them provide and arrange everything,” Ms. Hall, of Raffles Singapore , said. Responding to that desire, Raffles offers a personalized shopping extravaganza, in which guests consult with a personal shopper before arrival, and then enjoy a chauffeured four-hour trip to some of Singapore’s best boutiques (from 3,900 Singapore dollars, or about $2,860, which includes two nights in a suite and breakfast).

Hotels also seize opportunities to deliver a personal touch.

When David Anderson, 78, of St. Louis, took his extended family on a trip to the Clayoquot lodge, he emailed Ms. Cruse, the general manager, in advance, sharing a bit on each of the nine family members.

“She guided us toward taking a family hike,” said Mr. Anderson, acknowledging they had been inclined to split up and do different activities. “She knew that we were working on communication as a family. We were going to pass on the hike. She really pushed us,” he said about the outing with experienced guides.

A year and a half later, Mr. Anderson still feels the effects on his family. “I can honestly say after that trip, our communication has gone to a higher level.”

What’s next

Hotel experts say that the arms race for bigger, bolder, more creative experiences will continue. “Guests are starved for something new because everything around them has been turned into an algorithm,” said Mr. Gills, who is constantly digging deeper to come up with the novel.

So, if hotels want to stay competitive, it seems that no experience is too “out there.” Not even a mountaintop chat with the gods.

This New York State Region Is One of the Best Places to Go in 2022 — With Wineries, Waterfalls, and Charming Hotels

We've heard it's 'gorges.'

Jessica Ritz is a Los Angeles-based journalist with a professional background in architectural history and historic preservation. Her design, culture, food, and travel articles have appeared in Architectural Digest , Travel + Leisure , Metropolis , and Los Angeles Times , among other publications.

The Best Times to Visit the Finger Lakes

The best things to do in the finger lakes.

  • Visiting the Finger Lakes' Waterfalls

The Best Hotels in the Finger Lakes

Camping in the finger lakes, the best restaurants in the finger lakes.

Named one of the best places to travel in 2022 by Travel + Leisure editors, the Finger Lakes region in central New York maintains a distinct identity. The "centrally isolated" geographic positioning of FLX, as it's been dubbed in recent years, means denizens take great pride and intentionally invest in this dispersed assortment of towns and sites full of rich, diverse histories. Ever since Ukrainian immigrant Dr. Konstantin Frank planted his first vitis vinifera vines in 1958 on 188 sloping acres along western Keuka Lake, the Finger Lakes' profile as a wine region has quietly been on the rise. A new generation of restaurants and hotels is evolving into a robust hospitality ecosystem, making the range of Finger Lakes experiences on offer better than ever.

From the base of the 1848 women's rights convention in Seneca Falls that catalyzed the suffrage movement to a comprehensive Native American heritage site and Harriet Tubman's home in Auburn, history buffs can investigate pressing questions related to the past and present. Nature lovers can explore the famed, glacially formed gorges and waterfalls and astonishingly scenic vistas around the 11 slender bodies of water — the largest three of which are Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga — located roughly in the triangle formed by the cities of Rochester, Syracuse, and Corning. Food and beverage enthusiasts can sate themselves touring the Finger Lakes' wineries (there are more than 100) and delving into the impressive culinary scene rooted in elevating local and seasonal ingredients.

The seasons express themselves intensely and fully in the Finger Lakes. With the exception of active winter sports destinations like Greek Peak Mountain Resort and Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua, winter travel is a niche preference that comes with challenges, namely, an obscene amount of lake-effect snow. (This climate, however, accounts for the world-class rieslings and other varietal wines that thrive in low temperatures.) Unsurprisingly, summer and fall are glorious. Both seasons allow for long hikes followed by invigorating swims, whether in a lake or waterfall, and vendors' stalls are piled high with colorful organic summer produce at the Ithaca Farmers Market . Fall ushers in the grape harvest and technicolor displays of fall foliage as the school year gets underway at Cornell University and other school campuses in the area.

Ambitious outdoors adventurers can consult the Finger Lakes Trail website for routes, itineraries, and other resources related to the 950-plus-mile-long network. Letchworth State Park , a.k.a. "the Grand Canyon of the East," contains myriad opportunities for adventure, from cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in winter to whitewater rafting and hot air balloon rides. Letchworth State Park is also home to the Autism Nature Trail , an innovative, neurodiverse-inclusive program.

For trails of a different sort, FLX has five established wine trails to help guide visitors eager to investigate the wineries around Canandaigua, Seneca, Cayuga, and Keuka lakes. If making your own itinerary, don't miss the tasting rooms of FLX OG winemakers Hermann J. Weimer Vineyard and the aforementioned Dr. Frank . And for a sense of how the art and science of wine has evolved here beyond the better-known (deservedly so) winter-friendly rieslings, labels such as Heart and Hands , Forge Cellars , and Red Tail Ridge Winery are making impressive strides with crafting red wines using FLX-grown pinot noir and cabernet franc, among other varietals.

Beyond the fruit of the vine, the Rochester/Finger Lakes Craft Beverage Trail highlights breweries, cider houses, and distilleries that have kicked into high gear in recent years, primarily in Ontario County. The world of cider is quite compelling, as visitors to Finger Lakes Cider House in Interlaken on Cayuga Lake quickly learn. The rustic-chic dining room also serves an outstanding menu with views of the Good Life Farm and the lake beyond. From its Seneca Drums gin to McKenzie whiskeys, Finger Lakes Distilling has put the region on the map for spirits production using locally sourced grains and fruits.

Outstanding among the other unique cultural institutions in FLX is the Corning Museum of Glass . The sprawling facility is an immersive look into the fascinating intersections of craft, art, and design, along with American industrial history. The glass company's unrivaled collection starts with ancient specimens and continues through contemporary cutting-edge art, while the institution pushes the medium forward through its education, research, and artist residency programs .

Finally, for a water-oriented outing toward the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes, the town of Skaneateles, at the northern tip of its namesake lake, is another enchanting destination. Book a cruise with Mid-Lakes Navigation , which offers cocktail and dinner cruises aboard different vessels.

Visiting the Finger Lakes' Waterfalls

"Ithaca is Gorges" is a well-known tourism motto and easy conversation starter when spotted outside of the town itself. This geologic feature is certainly worth bragging about and makes the surrounding area one of the most stunning destinations for hiking and swimming in naturally formed channels. Download the Ithaca Waterfalls Challenge digital passport to keep track of its 22 waterfalls and other natural attractions, from the more gentle slopes of Buttermilk Falls and Buttermilk Creek to the diving board perched over a deep swimming hole at Robert Treman State Park . The 215-foot waterfall drop at Taughannock Falls in Trumansburg is a perfect Kodak — OK, Instagram — moment.

Watkins Glen State Park near the southern tip of Seneca Lake merits dedicating several hours in order to extensively hike the dramatic trails that hug the glen and take in the breathtaking sight of its 19 waterfalls. (Much of the ingenious infrastructure here and at other nearby sites that carefully respect their contexts were built under the aegis of agencies created during the New Deal.) And the options are plentiful, since FLX counts over 200 waterfalls.

The Inns of Aurora on Cayuga Lake is a community and hospitality passion project from native Pleasant Rowland, founder of the American Girl empire. The five unique luxury properties that make up the Inns of Aurora each convey their own aesthetic and atmosphere (most are landmarked historic structures). The newest inn is the restored Zabriskie House, which blends retro styling with selections from Rowland's modern art collection and features 11 guest rooms. Inns of Aurora also has a brand-new wellness center, an on-site Ayurvedic counselor, a demonstration kitchen where guests can take cooking classes, and two restaurants.

The ultra-chic Lake House on Canandaigua signaled a shift in the FLX hospitality scene when its 125 guest rooms and suites in the re-envisioned retreat debuted in summer 2020. Third-generation family owners who operate the design firm Post Company (formerly Studio Tack) and development arm Brooklyn Home Company breathed new life into the site-sensitive buildings with a fresh take on understated, contemporary luxury. TLEE Spas designed the comprehensive wellness program at the Lake Houses's Willowbrook Spa , which opened in summer 2021.

Whether it's for a classic cocktail at Bar Argos , an evening with friends in the funky, welcoming Argos Warehouse outdoor lounge, or an overnight stay at the Argos Inn , any or all of these plans provide a taste of Ithaca's eclectic character. The creative reimagining of this historic house has been adapted into a modern bed-and-breakfast where no two spaces are alike.

Firelight Camps , situated just a short drive outside of Ithaca, is the best of both worlds, allowing guests to be close to nature but with the all stylish and creature comforts of a well-designed, modern, bohemian-inflected glamping site. Another perk: co-owner Emma Frisch's culinary expertise makes this your-not-so-typical camping excursion.

The camping options in the Finger Lakes run the gamut and can accommodate anyone, from camping veterans to novices. The Corning KOA Resort south of Watkins Glen splits the difference, with a campground and deluxe cabins, plus a pool and waterslide. Sampson Park at Seneca Lake Resorts in the town of Romulus (one of the many whose names evoke Greek and Roman history) hosts campers, cabin dwellers, and RV drivers. The New York State Parks system operates camping areas with fewer frills but no less awe-inspiring settings, including the Taughannock Falls , Watkins Glen , and Robert H. Treman State Park campgrounds.

Elevated homeyness of the best sort sets the tone at Hazelnut Kitchen in downtown Trumansburg. The menu is both sophisticated and hearty, whether you opt for fresh fish or a New York strip steak served with fries and caramelized onions. Alternately, the kitchen designs a tasting experience based on whatever is in season, and it's well worth trying if you're an adventurous diner.

F.L.X. Table in Geneva takes an experimental yet highly convivial approach to hospitality, curating prix-fixe menus designed for intimate groups of diners. This venture is part of master sommelier Christopher Bates and restaurant industry pro Isabel Bogadtke's ambitious F.L.X. Hospitality group, which operates multiple concepts including the Quincy Exchange in Corning's Gaffer District, F.L.X. Weinery in Dundee on Seneca Lake, and Roc Brewing Co in Rochester.

The Moosewood restaurant became a quasi-household — yet still niche — name thanks to its iconic, best-selling vegetarian cookbooks. Now, the physical space that launched an institution back in 1973 is onto its next chapter, under new ownership. Ithaca native Danica Wilcox, whose mother was a longtime member of the Moosewood collective, has revamped the beloved restaurant, located on the ground floor of downtown Ithaca's Dewitt Mall , as of early 2022. She and her team kept the warm, comforting touchstones of the space and the spirit of the menu intact, while evolving the food and beverage program to engage with the community and host events including FLX-focused wine tastings with local experts.

The laid-back vibe at Ithaca Beer Co. , home to award-winning brews like Flower Power and Apricot Wheat, make its brewery and taproom outside of town an easy pleasure. When the weather permits, the idyllic arrangement, with views of rolling green meadows and outdoor games, is ideal for families and large groups. Tasting flights pair seamlessly with the menu that's heavy on top-notch comfort food and bar classics.

The Stonecat Cafe in Hector reflects the best of FLX unconventional quirkiness, serving unpretentious, high-quality fare paired with a local wine and cocktail list. Visitors can also book a stay on the property.

How we used rewards to see ‘Hamilton’ in NYC, learn to cook in Italy and fly home free

Many rewards enthusiasts focus on getting entirely free vacations with points and miles, but that has never been my style. My family has a specific bank account we use for travel, which we fund monthly with automatic bank transfers. We mostly use airline miles, hotel points and flexible travel points from our travel rewards cards to cover flights, get more value for our travel dollars or splurge for things we wouldn’t normally want to pay for.

This is exactly how we utilized points, miles and travel loyalty programs for our fall break vacation to New York City and Italy a few years back. Due to my children’s modified year-round school schedule, we were able to take our two kids – ages 10 and 12 at the time – on a whirlwind trip for 16 days in October.

We paid for some components of our trip with money from our travel budget and travel credits leftover from the pandemic. For example, we used leftover flight credits from Delta to fly from New York City to Rome. However, we also covered quite a bit of our trip with rewards points – for a total savings of more than $6,500. Here’s how we did it.

Flights from Indianapolis to Newark, plus airport pickup (valued at $800+)

I wanted to surprise my kids with tickets to see “Hamilton” on Broadway, so my first goal was to get us to New York City from Indianapolis with miles. But award flights were scarce for our date, particularly because we wanted to fly at night – after our kids got out of school.

Fortunately, I was able to book four one-way flights through the Chase travel portal to Newark, New Jersey, with 47,306 Chase Ultimate Rewards points. While those flights would normally cost more than $709, I was able to get them on points with 50% more value, due to the fact I have the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

Since we wouldn’t get into Newark until almost midnight, I used 6,052 more Chase Ultimate Rewards points to book airport pickup and a ride to our hotel. Total cost for this part of our trip (airport pickup and hotel) worked out to 53,358 Chase Ultimate Rewards points, which netted me a savings of $800.

Note that you can search for similar redemptions directly in the Chase travel portal whether you have a cash-back credit card from Chase or one of the brand’s travel credit cards. Just remember that the Chase Sapphire Reserve® is the one that lets you get 1.5 cents per point in value for travel through the portal, whereas the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card lets you book travel at 1.25 cents per point. If you have a cash-back credit card from Chase, you’ll get one cent per point in value instead.

Two nights in New York City with Hyatt (valued at $1,000+)

Next, I needed a place to stay in New York City, preferably a hotel close to Times Square and Broadway. Unfortunately, we were there over the weekend and needed a room that slept four. This meant prices were sky-high, so I hoped to use hotel loyalty points to cover the cost.

I was able to find an award room with two queen beds at the Hyatt Centric Times Square New York for 25,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points per night. World of Hyatt is a Chase transfer partner, so I transferred 50,000 UR points to my Hyatt account to make the booking.

While that’s a lot of points to fork over for two nights, the rate at this hotel (and other local hotels) over our dates was well over $500 per night. This means we got more than 2 cents value for our Chase UR points, and I’m happy with that.

Also note that today’s World of Hyatt rates for this hotel are showing slightly higher at 29,000 points per night, but on dates that also show a cash rate of $503. This means that making this redemption today might get you slightly more than 1.7 cents per point in value.

Either way, this leg of our journey was far from cheap even after taking the free hotel stay into account. We splurged for “Hamilton” tickets, which I had bought online very early on to avoid resale markup. We had a pretty nice dinner out before the show and did some shopping at the Hershey store and Zara. Getting to see the Big Apple through my children’s eyes was well worth it.

Using rewards points in Italy (valued at $700+)

Once we were done in New York, we hopped on our Delta flight to Rome, Italy. For our airport pickup at the Leonardo da Vinci International Airport in Fiumicino (FCO), I forked over 5,363 Chase UR points for private airport pickup in a minivan. We could have taken a train or taxi, but I love the convenience of having someone waiting at the airport holding a sign with my name on it – especially when I’m landing in a foreign country and jet-lagged from an overnight flight.

I also love how easy it is to book airport pickups through the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal. You can do this by searching for travel, then for “activities.” After that, you can filter search options to find “ground transportation” or “travel and transportation services” depending on the destination.

During our time in Italy, we stayed in Airbnbs that I paid for with cash from our travel budget. Over the course of two weeks, we visited Rome, Orvieto, Assisi, Florence, Lake Garda (Sirmione), Verona, Iseo and Lake Como. The entire trip was spectacular. We ate lots of good food, saw so much stunning scenery and had plenty of quality family time.

We also had a rental car during the second half of the trip, paid for with my Chase Sapphire Reserve card in order to use its rental car insurance. This coverage is primary and free when you pay for the rental with the card, good for up to $75,000 of theft and collision damage for rental cars in the U.S. and abroad.

We also forked over 42,994 Chase Ultimate Rewards points for a pasta-cooking tutorial and dinner with a Cesarine (a certified home cook) in Verona, Italy. Since this cooking class would have cost over $600 had we paid in cash, it was a splurge in points as well, but absolutely worth it! Not only did our teacher take us out to several local markets to buy fresh ingredients, but she invited us into her home, where we learned to make pasta and had an excellent meal.

My kids helped her roll the dough for tagliatelle, which we devoured along with eggplant Parmesan, local cheeses, radish pie and homemade tiramisu. We washed it all down with Valpolicella, a local wine from Veneto.

Finding our way home (valued at $4,000+)

We spent the rest of our trip near Lake Como, in a village called Varenna. I didn’t want to have to travel before our early flight home, so I started looking for a hotel in Milan for the night before departure.

I used another 15,187 Ultimate Rewards points for one night at the Hilton Garden Inn Milan Malpensa, located a quick ride from the airport with a free airport shuttle that runs every 30 minutes.

This hotel would have cost me anywhere from 28,000 to 60,000 points if I’d booked with rewards within my Hilton Honors account. Booking through the Chase portal was a much better deal since that’s the kind of points I had most of at the time.

To get home from Milan to Indianapolis, I transferred 120,000 Ultimate Rewards points to United MilagePlus, another Chase travel partner, to pay for four one-way flights with the airline. This was a steal for the dates we were flying since each one-way flight was going for over $1,000 in economy.

One-way economy flights from North America to Europe cost slightly more these days, typically starting at around 40,000 miles plus taxes and fees one-way. However, award availability is pretty good if you’re flexible with your destination and dates.

In addition to the 120,000 United miles I burned, I also paid $211 in airline taxes and fees.

However, I paid those airline taxes and fees with my Chase Sapphire Reserve, and I’m glad I did. While we made the first leg of our flight to Newark, on time, the second to Indianapolis was canceled. We found ourselves stranded in Newark for 24 hours. While United covered our hotel stay, I filed a claim for our meals and Uber rides to and from the airport through my Chase card, using its travel insurance.

With the trip cancellation/interruption coverage from the Chase Sapphire Reserve, travelers get reimbursed for meals and lodging when a trip is delayed by 12 hours or more or requires an overnight stay. This benefit is worth up to $500 per ticket, which is more than we needed since our hotel stay was covered by the airline. But we did pay well over $150 out-of-pocket in total over a 24-hour period, and that’s exactly what this coverage is for!

The bottom line

Paying for trips entirely with rewards sounds awfully nice, but I would rather use points and miles to stretch my travel budget further. We like to travel off the beaten path and prefer to stay in condos or Airbnbs instead of hotels. Most importantly, we like to plan our trips our way, without focusing on rewards or being steered toward whatever is free.

This fall break trip was definitely expensive, but points and miles from our rewards cards helped us avoid spending $6,500 we would have otherwise. Either way, spending this precious time with my husband and kids in New York City and Italy was priceless.
