The Searchers Official Website

Frank allen’s searchers news june 2024.

Hello again everyone,

It’s all over bar the shouting as people say, but I thought I’d pen one more newsletter to round things off once and for all – or maybe not!

The 2024 extension of the Thank You Tour was just as we had hoped, a time of sheer joy for all of us. Great crowds, excellent shows and a wonderful feeling between all of us both onstage and off. I’m including our amazing crew Jim Howell and Rob Hawkins in that bunch because in a sense they really were the people who brought us together once again. They were the catalyst that got us talking and interacting again like old friends, just as we once were. We even brought Rob on stage with us in the final evening to join John McNally Junior for a final rendition of Love Potion No 9. What an amazing sight that was. And Robbie just loved being a Searcher for a few minutes.

Groups are very much like marriages. Sometimes being too close to other people for too long can have a negative effect and it needs another element to intervene and revive that closeness that had dissipated somewhat over the years. Jimi and Rob certainly fulfilled that role. Such nice people and such fun, not to mention superb at their jobs. Once again we were talking and laughing in the green rooms and life on the road was as it should be once more. It was a joy and we are all sad it’s all over. Or is it?

Nothing has been planned. There are no shows set up for the future. But we have learned the truth of the phrase never say never and there might just be the faintest possibility of selected performances yet to come. It is very unlikely that it would be in the form of a gruelling tour of all evening shows. We are not getting any younger and any undertakings would not happen for nine months time at the earliest. By then John would ben heading towards 84 and I am all but a couple of years behind. Life on the road doesn’t get any easier.

Perhaps one way would be a gentle run of Warners Country House weekend shows which take in Saturday evenings and only require a 75 minute set. If something of that sort is offered we may consider it. I’ll keep you informed of any progress. Of course those venues may not be to the taste of everyone.

There is always the possibility of a one-off special concert for which we might possibly be invited to guest on. But it would have to be really special because one-off shows do take a lot of preparation and rehearsing. We certainly could not refuse a second Royal Variety Show in  the very unlikely event of being asked.

Several people even mentioned Glastonbury. I think that would be very unlikely. As influential and renowned as we became we don’t seem to figure prominently enough to warrant the interest of the relevant powers that be. We were never edgy or controversial enough. And boy, we would certainly have to do some rehearsing for that one for fear of making complete fools of ourselves.

Whatever the future has in store John and I (together we own the name and all legal rights to The Searchers) have decided we will never relinquish ownership and title of the band and we will fiercely protect it in the same way we have done through the years. As far as I am concerned a band without John McNally can never be The Searchers. Promoters employing misleading advertising which could be deemed as “passing off” should be very careful. We have dealt very successfully with such problems in the past and will take suitable action in the future should it be necessary. There are quite a few in the past who have found to their dismay that it is a very expensive route to go down.

John and I do of course wish Spencer and Ritchie all the best for their ventures yet to come and should we proceed with any concert plans we hope that they are free to be there as a part of the line-up alongside us. That will be something worth waiting for wouldn’t it? But of course we respectfully request that they too have to keep a close eye on misleading advertising and to instruct promoters accordingly.

One very important thing to do is to thank you who have supported us throughout the decades. We have a following that is the envy of so many other groups of our era and we are so grateful to you all. It has been a magical ride.

I must mention Tim Viney who for so long maintained our profile with the fanzine which he produced so well. His passing was so sad and he was too young to leave us.

Wendy Burton, along with Gary Jackson took care of our superb website which in these days on the internet (I’m a bit of a muppet at IT stuff) is an essential part of communication for anyone in the entertainment industry.

Mick and Chris Peebles along with Carolyn and Chris Wright set up a Facebook Page as another side to keeping the name out there. We are grateful to all these people.

Alan Field has guided our career for such a long time and will continue to explore possibilities on our behalf. Thank you Alan for all the hard work.

I`m very tempted to mention some of our regular followers who have traipsed around the U.K and in some cases to foreign lands to enjoy the shows but it would be too unfair because there will always be names who have been inadvertently omitted. So many of those people we know by face and by name but it is obviously dangerous to pick and choose. You know who you are. We just hope you know that we appreciate you very much indeed. You were all, and still are, very important to us.

And there we are. The future? Watch this space. Meanwhile stay happy and stay safe.

Frank Allen.

on behalf of John, Spencer and Ritchie.

The Searchers continue Thank You tour as they bid final farewell

BRITAIN”S longest-running pop band The Searchers are entertaining their fans in classic fashion as they continue on their “Thank You” tour.

The tour, which began April 6, 2024 will run until June 13, 2024 and could prove to be the band’s last hoorah.

The Mersey Beat band, who rubbed shoulders with The Beatles in the early 60s, include Lydney’s Spencer James and are famous for their 60s hits ’Sweets for my Sweet’ and ’Sugar and Spice’, along with countless others.

The Searchers originally announced retirement in 2019, but returned in 2023 for what The Forester reported as their final tour.

But the Forest-based singer and the band were not ready for the curtain call. Frank Allen, the band’s bassist said: “Yes, this really looks like the final tour. I know we've said that before but there has to be an end at some point although we still say ‘never say never’ and allow the possibility of accepting an important one-off show if such an occasion was offered.

“Maybe a second Royal Variety Show or another similarly prestigious occasion? We would certainly have to seriously consider such options, as unlikely as they may be.”

The band rose to fame during the Merseybeat scene in Liverpool and were originally formed as a skiffle group in 1957 (before The Beatles and The Rolling Stones), by John McNally and Mike Pender.

Spencer’s career took off in the 1970s as a member of The First Class, famous for their US hit single ’Beach Baby’.

After touring with Nightfly in the 1980s, he formed The Spencer James Band, with whom he shared the bill with The Searchers in 1985.

During this time, he toured as part of a supergroup featuring members of Whitesnake, Bad Company and Ringo Starr’s son Zak Starkey.

He joined The Searchers in 1985 following the departure of original singer Mike Pender, after he impressed the band members at a gig with The Spencer James Band.

The Searchers’ tours have taken them around the world, including to Australia and Las Vegas, and the band retains a dedicated international following.

The band will be playing in Cardiff’s New Theatre June 2. If you’re hoping to get tickets, you can secure them online or call 0343 310 0041.

The Searchers Thank You Tour 2024

Joseph Kennedy

The Searchers are THE LONGEST RUNNING BAND IN POP HISTORY.

the searchers thank you tour 2024

Formed by John McNally in 1957, the Merseybeat mega-stars have been going longer than every other band in the world, even the Rolling Stones (by five years – the Stones formed in 1962).

Last year the band tried to hang up their famous Rickenbacker guitars with a final ‘Thank You’ tour of the UK.

But their sold-out 43 date tour was so successful, The Searchers have announced a second ‘Thank You’ tour in 2024

Guitarist John McNally said:

“The fans don’t want us to stop… and nor do we!

“The reception we had on the last tour was just amazing – fans singing along to our songs as if they were recent hits.

“It was such a tremendous experience, we’re going to do it all over again!”

Bassist Frank Allen said:

“This musical journey is now in its sixty eighth year… we can’t get our heads around it.

“Like so many of our contemporaries, we thought our careers wouldn’t last more than a few years but here we are, nearly seven decades on.

“We’ve realised that The Searchers are for life, not just for Christmas! Another major factor in wanting to do it again is that the last tour was just so much fun. We can’t wait to get back out there.”

The 2024 ‘Thank You’ tour – titled as a mark of respect and appreciation for their legions of fans – will take in towns and cities where The Searchers didn’t manage to play in 2023.

The tour starts on Saturday 6 th April at the Alveston Hall, Nantwich and covers 28 dates, culminating at the Town Hall, Dudley on Thursday 13 th June.

Fans will be treated to a full set of The Searchers’ best-loved songs, including ‘When You Walk In The Room’, ‘Goodbye My Love’, ’Sugar & Spice’, ‘What Have They Done To The Rain’ as well as their three UK No.1 hits ‘Sweets for my Sweet’ (1963), ‘Needles and Pins’ (1964) and ‘Don’t Throw Your Love Away’ (1964).

Also included will be material from the 70s and 80s, when the Searchers were signed to Sire Records , becoming label-mates with some of the hippest acts around including Talking Heads, The Cure, Madonna and The Ramones – who covered ‘Needles and Pins’.

This was one of the band’s favorite creative periods and saw them recording at Rockfield Studios in Wales (famous for Queen’s recording of Bohemian Rhapsody).

Keep an ear out for gems including ‘Hearts in Her Eyes’, ‘Love’s Melody’, ‘Infatuation’ and ‘It’s Too Late’.

THE SEARCHERS have sold over 50 million records and scored thirteen UK chart hits – including three No.1’s – and a sound that inspired some of the greatest artists of all time, including The Byrds, Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen.

The band line-up includes original members John McNally (guitar, vocals) and Frank Allen (bass, vocals)  and Spencer James (guitar, vocals – Spencer has been part of the line-up for 38 years) and Richie Burns (drums).

The Searchers Thank You Tour runs 6 th Apr – 13 th June 2024

The Searchers’ formation year is similar to my parents’ birth years. Hailing from Liverpool, making them some of the pioneers of the genre, English beat rock, they have had a huge string of hits throughout their fruitful career, and they are still doing what they’re doing fifty years after their formation! They are one of those bands that have definitely stayed in their ways, playing exactly the same as they did all those years ago. Transcending just wasn’t for them. However, their harmonies are quite simply a force to be reckoned with. “Sweets for my Sweet” is one of those fantastic songs that opens this set, with tight locking ‘threw the key away 50 years ago’ kind of harmonies, also I must say, they are so incredibly dressed! “Young Girl” is one of those songs that listening to it, I realize how before it’s time it was, with it’s modulations and octave bass line. It could have come out yesterday and been a hit!

THE SEARCHERS LIVE IN CONCERT

‘THANK YOU’ TOUR 2024

When the Searchers announced the end of their touring years in 2018, they left behind a legion of devoted fans and supporters who were shocked and saddened that they would no longer be able to enjoy the concerts and the music that over six decades had become such an important part of their lives.

They returned in 2023 for what was to have been one last tour, but such was the success of that tour, they have now agreed to go back for one final last time and appear at some of the many venues they weren’t able to visit on that tour.

The Searchers are proud and grateful to all their followers and fans who have supported them over the years for a wonderful and successful career.

Their concerts are packed with their chart hits and more, which have made them a major attraction in theatres across the U.K. Sweets For My Sweet, Needles & Pins, When You Walk In The Room, Goodbye My Love, Don`t Throw Your Love Away, Sugar & Spice, What Have They Done To The Rain. Let’s Talk About the Stage Hunters of the 2024 Tour de France

To some, the 2024 Tour de France is all about the race to win the yellow jersey, but to us, it’s more like a festival, with 21 days of celebration in which riders of all shapes and sizes have a chance to garner some attention for themselves and their teams.

Okay, maybe that’s a bit much, but here’s the point: while the battle to win the maillot jaune is always the main focal point of the Tour, there are also races within the race, races that take place on each stage each day.

That’s why, for many riders, a single stage win is an achievement that defines their careers, forever making them known as “Such-and-Such, Tour de France Stage Winner,” a moniker that will follow them for the rest of their lives.

And there’s no more exciting way to win a stage than from a breakaway. Luckily, the 2024 Tour de France is filled with stages that look to be the perfect playgrounds for opportunists who don’t quite fit the mold of “pure climber” or “pure sprinter” and some teams who might be starting to feel the pressure that comes with having never won a stage of their own.

Here’s a look at some of the most prominent, accomplished (and desperate) stage hunters in the 2024 Tour de France.

Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike)

Van Aert wasn’t even supposed to be racing this year’s Tour de France. After completing what he had hoped would have been a successful run at the cobbled Classics, the Belgian was planning to head to the Giro d’Italia, where he would build a base for his bid to win a gold medal at the Summer Olympics. But he crashed violently at Dwars door Vlaanderen in late March, breaking his collarbone and several ribs–and ruining his plans for the first half of the season.

So now he’s riding the Tour, where he’s hoping to build form for the Olympics, to help Denmark ’s Jonas Vingegaard to a high GC finish, and to win a stage. After going winless last year before heading home early for the birth of his second child, the Belgian will be extra-hungry to prove to himself and his rivals that he’s still one of the best in the sport.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck)

Without Van Aert, van der Poel dominated the cobbled Classics, winning his third Tour of Flanders and then defending his title in Paris-Roubaix a week later, completing the Flanders-Roubaix double by winning both Monuments in the same week. The World Champion raced through Liège–Bastogne–Liège, then took a break before starting his own preparation for the Summer Olympics, a preparation that begins with the Tour de France.

The Tour will be the first stage race of the Dutchman’s season–he’s raced only seven times on the road so far this year–and we’re expecting him to head to the French grand tour with two goals: assist Belgium ’s Jasper Philipsen in winning as many stages as possible (and the green jersey) and hopefully win a stage for himself.

Magnus Cort (Uno-X Mobility)

Cort is one of the best stage hunters in professional cycling, a rider who combines strength with tactical savvy–and a little bit of luck–to score important victories on all types of terrain. The Dane already has nine grand tour stage wins on his resume, and last year–while riding for EF Education-EasyPost–he won his first stage at the Giro d’Italia, meaning he’s now won stages in all three grand tours as well.

During the off-season, the 31-year-old transferred to Uno-X Mobility–a Norwegian wild card team racing its second Tour de France this year–where his primary goal will be winning the team its first Tour stage. We’ll be keeping an eye on him during some of the Tour’s transition stages (too hilly to end in a sprint, but not hard enough to be a day to shuffle the GC) during the second and third weeks. Breakaway stage wins are often hard to predict, but this is a rider who always seems to pull one off.

Ben Healy and Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost)

Cort’s a hard rider to replace, but if Healy and Bettiol have their way, EF Education-EasyPost won’t miss him for long. Healy–an Irishman–has been one of cycling’s brightest young stars over the past two seasons. He took his first grand tour stage victory at last year’s Giro d’Italia, and now the 23-year-old has his sights set on winning a stage at the Tour.

Bettiol–who just celebrated his tenth year with the team–has become the team’s spirit animal lately, racing with the kind of panache that inspires his teammates and delights his fans. The Italian was a popular winner at last weekend’s Italian National Championships and now gets to show off his new tricolore jersey in the Tour de France, where he’ll find several stages to his liking.

In general, EF Education should be one of the more exciting teams in this year’s race, with a roster stacked with riders capable of winning stages on any given day. Expect to see the team’s pink kit in the thick of the action on just about every stage.

Matej Mohorič (Bahrain-Victorious)

Like EF Education-EasyPost, Bahrain-Victorious comes to the Tour de France with a roster that’s loaded from top to bottom with riders capable of winning a stage or two or three–so it’s hard to pick just one to feature.

But we’re going with Mohorič, the Slovenian who took an emotional stage win late in last year’s race and then gave what has to be one of if not the best post-race interviews in the history of professional cycling.

Like many successful stage hunters, the 29-year-old is an adept one-day rider–he won Milan-Sanremo in 2022 and last year’s gravel world championships–who already has three Tour de France stage wins to show for his efforts. With Spain ’s Pello Bilbao, the Netherlands’ Wout Poels, and Great Britain’s Fred Wright, Bahrain-Victorious definitely has a team capable of equalling–and possibly bettering–its three stage wins from last year.

Derek Gee (PremierTech)

Gee’s big breakthrough came at last year’s Giro d’Italia, where the Canadian scored four second-place stage finishes (and took second in the Points and King of the Mountains competitions as well). But the team didn’t bring him to the Tour de France, which made sense considering the Giro was the first grand tour of his career.

But Gee’s been building his 2024 season around the French grand tour, and after a stage win and third-place overall finish at the Critérium du Dauphiné in early June, he’s primed to finally get his first grand tour stage victory–and on the sport’s biggest stage. Frankly, if the Canadian doesn’t win at least one stage, we’ll be shocked.

Toms Skujiņš (Lidl-Trek)

Lidl-Trek is once again coming to the Tour on the hunt for stage wins, led by Denmark’s Mads Pedersen–who won stages in 2022 and 2023–and Italy ’s Giulio Ciccone–last year’s King of the Mountains. But while Pedersen will serve as the team’s sprinter and Ciccone as the team’s climber, Skujiņš will have the freedom to hunt for a stage win n from the breakaway.

We’re eager to see how he does on Stage 9, the Tour’s first gravel stage. Second in Italy’s Strade Bianche this March, the Latvian has proven to be an effective Classics rider when given the chance. Stage 9 could be a perfect day for him to take his first grand tour stage victory–especially if the GC contenders spend most of the afternoon marking one another instead of trying to win the stage themselves.

Maxim Van Gils (Lotto Dstny)

Van Gils doesn’t get as much press as van Aert and Philipsen–and for good reason–but the 24-year-old Belgian could start to move the needle in his own direction with a stage win at the Tour de France. He rode well in his Tour debut last year–he took second on Stage 13 atop the Grand Colombier–and has three wins–and some other important high placings–so far in 2024. He’s one of the riders Lotto Dstny is counting on to win the team its first stage since 2020.

Anyone From Arkéa-B&B Hotels and Intermarché-Wanty

With Cofidis–who hadn’t won a Tour de France stage since 2008–winning two stages last year, the focus this year will be on two of three teams in this year’s Tour that have not yet won a stage of their own.

It’s been ten years since Arkéa-B&B Hotels first raced the Tour de France, and the French team still has no stage wins to show for its efforts. (In fact, it’s never had a rider finish better than sixth–which is, uh, not great.) This year, the team will be led by France’s Arnaud Démare, who twice won sprint stages at the Tour but might find it hard to win a third, given the depth of this year’s sprinters. In the end, the team’s best bet might be France’s Kévin Vauquelin, a 23-year-old Tour rookie who finished second at Flèche Wallonne in April.

And then there’s Belgium’s Intermarché-Wanty, who raced its first Tour de France in 2017–which means the team’s “We’re New to the Tour” grace period has ended. Always aggressive, the team has yet to win a stage, but with riders like Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay, South Africa ’s Louis Meintjes, and the Netherlands’ Mike Teunissen–who won a stage and wore the yellow jersey with Jumbo-Visma in 2019–the team has the firepower and experience it needs to win its first stage this year.
