Carnival Magic Overview

There’s no need for a wand or cape, the magic comes naturally on the Carnival Magic. This super ship was the first ship to feature a ropes course at sea. The ropes course is a focal point of the SportsSquare where you and your friends can play miniature golf, table tennis or foosball. You could spend an entire day in the SportsSquare or the Carnival WaterWorks water park, just don’t miss out on the relaxing Cloud 9 Spa where a rejuvenating facial is calling your name. Then head to Cucina del Capitano for a family-style Italian dinner.

Carnival Magic - Cruise Ship Photo Tour and Profile

the carnival magic cruise ship

Carnival Cruise Lines

The 130,000-ton, 3,690-passenger Carnival Magic was launched in Venice in May 2011. She was Carnival's 23rd ship and Carnival Corporation's 100th. Mainstream cruising sure has come a long way in size, as is seen in this picture comparing Carnival's first ship with the corporation's 100th. What doesn't show in the picture is how much the onboard experience and amenities have improved over the past 40 years.

The Carnival Magic sails seven-day cruises year-round to the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexico from its home port in Port Canaveral, Florida. This review and photos are from the inaugural  9-day cruise from Venice to Barcelona .

The company's goal is to factor in "fun" and "memorable" when designing a new Carnival ship. The Carnival Magic is a great ship and fits Carnival's "fun ship" and "memorable" theme perfectly. Carnival executives know their primary target market is middle America, and this ship is geared towards the type of memorable cruise vacation North American families and couples are looking for--social, fun, affordable, unpretentious, and good value for their vacation dollar. They've certainly succeeded with this ship.

The Carnival Magic is much like her sister ship the Carnival Dream launched in 2009, but has a few interesting differences outlined below that are discussed in more detail further in this article.

Let's take a detailed tour of the Carnival Magic.

Carnival Magic -- Dining and Cuisine

The Carnival Magic features many favorite dining venues that past Carnival cruisers recognize. In addition, the cruise ship has two exciting new dining options that have quickly become guest favorites.

The first new venue was an overnight success from its first sailing. The RedFrog Pub is Carnival Cruise Line's first onboard pub. Located on deck 5, the RedFrog has both indoor and outdoor seating for 120 guests. Its theme is a mixture of the Caribbean and Key West, with palm trees and decor straight out of a beach bar. Although the inaugural sailing was in the Mediterranean, this laid-back cruise ship definitely has a Caribbean feel. The RedFrog serves Caribbean-themed pub snacks such as coconut shrimp, chicken wings, Bahamian conch salad, and fried grouper fingers. Yummy, and a perfect lunch, snack, or light dinner. The pub also has live music that fits the Caribbean theme and a wide selection of island beers, frozen libations, and rum drinks.

Carnival has brewed its first private-label draught beer especially for the Carnival Magic, called Thirsty Frog Red.  As you might expect, Thirsty Frog Red is red in color and has a very slight fruity taste. Very tasty.

Carnival has made excellent use of the space over the Lido Marketplace, adding an Italian family-style dining venue called Cucina del Capitano ("The Captain's Kitchen"). This traditional Italian restaurant, with its red and white checked tablecloths and kegs of Chianti, pays homage to Carnival's Italian heritage. Past Carnival cruisers already know that all of the line's captains are Italian and many Carnival ships, including the Carnival Magic, were built in Italy. The menu consists of made-to-order Italian favorites developed by the cruise line's executive chef and four chefs de cuisine who spent three weeks in Italy researching and eating with some of Italy's finest chefs and their families. Those who don't like Chianti can choose from a wine list specializing in Italian vintages or one of the specialty cocktails such as a Limoncello Martini designed just for Cucina del Capitano.

Meals at Cucina del Capitano are casual and fun, featuring homemade pasta and other Italian specialties. Some recipes come straight from the Captains' (or their wives') kitchens. Most diners love two other elements of this restaurant. The first is all the old captioned-photographs lining the walls. Most of these pictures either came from Carnival's archives or from the personal collections of Carnival's current or former captains. The second is the warm service, touched with fun. The waiters serve Chianti from rolling kegs and entertain the diners with lively songs.

Carnival hasn't changed all the restaurants on the Carnival Magic, continuing with two large main dining rooms, Northern Lights (midship on decks 3 and 4 with 948 seats) and Southern Lights (aft on decks 3 and 4 with 1,248 seats). Dinner is served at two fixed seatings (6:00 pm and 8:15 pm) or with anytime dining between 5:45 and 9:30 pm. Dinner usually includes six appetizers and soups, two salads, and six main courses. Also offered are traditional selections like Caesar salad, shrimp cocktail, grilled flat iron steak, grilled chicken, and gourmet burgers. The dessert menu also features six selections, including a Carnival favorite--the Warm Chocolate Melting Cake.

Carnival still has its classic alternative Prime Steakhouse on the Carnival Magic. This room is elegant and has a great atmosphere. If you like beef, lamb, or lobster, you will love the Prime Steakhouse. Located aft on deck 5, this contemporary steakhouse has prime beef ranging from a 9-ounce filet to a 24-ounce porterhouse. Those looking for a "lighter" meal can enjoy the fish or chicken. The side orders are huge and delicious, with wasabi mashed potatoes and sauteed mushrooms table favorites. Although Prime has a surcharge, it's a great place for a special meal to accompany your unforgettable cruise vacation. It only seats 69, so get your reservations early.

Those looking for another unforgettable experience might choose to experience the Chef's Table in the galley. Eight to twelve guests get to savor a special menu that begins with a champagne and canapés cocktail hour, followed by a personal tour of the galley in operation, and a seven-course meal with wine pairings. This one comes at a steep price but would provide some great stories to take back home.

The Lido Marketplace offers international flavors at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Almost every type of cuisine is offered on one day or another, including Italian, Asian, Tex-Mex, tandoori, and all sorts of deli sandwiches and salad-fixings. Pizza and frozen yogurt are available 24-hours a day.

On sea days, Carnival Magic's outdoor Lanai area on deck 5 transforms into an on-deck barbecue, dishing up grilled items such as sliders, chicken, and hot dogs. Salads, homemade chips and salsa, quesadillas, and traditional barbecue accompaniments are also included.

Also on deck 5 in the Ocean Plaza is the Plaza Cafe, a patisserie serving specialty coffees and sweets such as baked-on-board cakes, pies, and cookies for a nominal charge. The Plaza Cafe also has freshly made milkshakes and premium ice cream. With both indoor and outdoor seating in a central location, this is a busy hub of the ship.

One of the most popular places late in the afternoon on deck 5 near the Ocean Plaza(from about 5 pm to 8:15 pm) is the sushi bar with complimentary freshly-made sushi.

The Carnival Magic also has complimentary 24-hour room service with a selection of sandwiches, salads, and snacks.

Carnival Magic -- Outdoor Deck Areas

Everyone seems to enjoy the outdoor deck areas of the Carnival Magic. The SportSquare area on the top deck aft offers guests the chance to try the cruise industry's first ropes course, aptly named the SkyCourse. The 230-foot ropes course has 20 bridges, each named for a Carnival home port city; 10 distinct elements; and 20 different activities over two different loops, an inner basic loop and an outer more "challenging" route. Both looked very difficult and a little too thrilling, although participants wear a safety harness while traversing the nets, ropes, and bridges. The course was busy day and night, and the thrill-seekers have a great view of the ocean far below. Participants are checking out the view while resting between activities and elements. Seeing the smiles on kids' and grown-ups' faces shows they were having a good time while improving their balance, coordination, and confidence. It's certainly a great activity for families and up to 1400 people per day can use the course.

Also in the SportSquare complex are a miniature golf course; outdoor weightlifting area; a Vita exercise course with machines and stations; a lighted multi-purpose court for basketball, volleyball and soccer; and ping pong and foosball tables. Circling the entire area is an eighth-mile jogging track with great views of the sea and all the people enjoying the SportSquare activities. A full bar with a large flat-screen display is available for those who just want to relax and check out the sports action in the area or on TV.

The outdoor decks on the Carnival Magic include the WaterWorks aqua park with its exhilarating (or terrifying) 312-foot spiral "Twister" and "Drainpipe" water slides, as well as an Aqua Play splash park for youngsters and their families. One new feature of the splash park is the "Power Drencher", a gigantic, 300-gallon "dump bucket". The bucket slowly fills before tipping on its side and making its own waterfall. Don't worry, no one gets 300 gallons dumped on their head--a bell clangs just before the bucket dumps, and a large tray spreads the water out amongst several areas. People loved it, although bah-humbug me thought the ringing bell a little annoying.

Forward on the top deck is Serenity, the adults-only quiet area, with plenty of very comfortable chaise lounges, hammocks, barrel chairs, umbrellas, whirlpools, and a full-service bar. Serenity also has two large whirlpools.

The Carnival Magic has two resort-style pool areas. The midship Beach Pool is the largest area and features a Seaside Theatre with a 270-square-foot LED screen and poolside seating. In the daytime, guests sunbathe, read, or watch sports, cartoons, or concerts on the movie screen. At night, movies are shown. The Tides Pool is aft on the Carnival Magic and also has plenty of seating and great views of the wake of the ship when sailing.

The Lanai on deck 5 is a half-mile outdoor promenade encircling the Carnival Magic, with easy access to the Ocean Plaza, RedFrog Pub, and other indoor areas of the ship. The Lanai also has seating and wind deflectors, making it a pleasant place to sit even on windy days. Four cantilevered whirlpools extend out over the sides of the ship, providing a relaxing place to watch the world go by on the Lanai.

Carnival Magic -- Indoor Public Areas

The  interior decor of the Carnival Magic  is bright and fun, although not quite as over-the-top as some previous Carnival ships. Principal designer Joe Farcus seems to have gone for a slightly more subdued look, which  Carnival  guests still love. Don't worry, the cruise line hasn't sacrificed one bit of fun, with some memorable touches.

The central atrium/lobby area is gorgeous, terrific lighting and multi-deck glass elevators soaring towards the overhead skylight. The guest relations desk and shore excursion desk are on deck 3, along with a large dance floor. A small bandstand, where live musicians perform night and day, is suspended over the dance floor. Guests can lean over the railing on all the decks above and listen to the music and watch the action below.

On deck 5 surrounding the atrium are the retail shops. Most of these are like those on other ships--Carnival-branded merchandise, clothing, jewelry, liquor, perfumes, etc. However, one new retail shop is going to be very popular with the kids--Cherry on Top. It's more than bins of colorful candy in a candy store, although that's the most eye-catching feature when you enter the shop. The Cherry on Top shop also has cute gifts, cards, and flowers, all designed to make a special person in your life feel even more special.

The thousands of kids sailing on the Carnival Magic also appreciate the 19,000 square feet of space dedicated just to them. Camp Carnival caters to those 2-11; Circle C is for the 'tweens ages 12 to 14, and Club O2 is for the older teens ages 15 to 17. Each group has its own set of counselors, own space, and age-appropriate activities.

Parents of young children appreciate Carnival's Night Owls program on the Carnival Magic. This is an enhancement of the cruise line's babysitting service and is on all Carnival ships.

Adults also appreciate the 22,770 square-foot Cloud 9 Spa, with its combination of fitness, wellness, workout, and personal-pampering spaces. The space is quiet and soothing, and the thalassotherapy pool, treatment rooms, and thermal suites are especially great for unwinding and ridding the body of tension and stress. The fitness facility has all the latest equipment including treadmills, bicycles, fitness machines, spinning equipment, and ellipticals.

The Hat Trick casino has all the popular table games and even some penny slots.

A Carnival ship wouldn't be a "fun ship" without a wide variety of bars and lounges, and the Carnival Magic is no different. Many of the bars and lounges are on deck 5, and each has its own personality. The 400-seat Spotlight Lounge has a small stage and dance floor, making it perfect for comedy acts and Superstar Live Karaoke (with a live four-piece band and backup singer). The Play It Again Piano Bar is a popular spot; quiet when the pianist is not playing, but full of fun (and singing) when he is. Vibe is the name of the dance club, and everyone loves the lighted tables and purple mood lighting. Of course, you can find a drink at the RedFrog Pub or Ocean Plaza bars, both on deck 5.

Deck 5 isn't the only place you can find a bar on the Carnival Magic. There are several bars on the pool decks, and the Magic Bar in the deck 3 lobby is a good place to people-watch or listen to the live music. The very quiet, small Escape Bar is tucked in a corner next to the Northern Lights Dining Room and the Books & Games library.

The Carnival Magic has a large conference center area on deck 3 that can be used for meetings and weddings. Embracing modern technology, the Carnival Magic has dozens of "Fun Hubs" of computers scattered throughout the ship. The Fun Hub is a social network and shipboard Intranet portal that provides access to a variety of information on Carnival Magic's services, facilities, and daily activities. Carnival Magic also offers cell phone service and bow-to-stern WiFi, so those bringing along their own computers can access the Fun Hub and surf the Web from their own cabin or common area on the ship.

The 1,300-seat Showtime Theater on the Carnival Magic has a huge stage, perfect for its three new production shows and for a wide variety of entertainment. The Showtime Theater is also used for bingo, presentations, and lectures.

Carnival Magic Cabins and Suites

The 1,845  Carnival Magic cabins  and suites are similar to the wide array of  accommodations on the Carnival Dream . The cabins are a nice size, with plenty of storage. Families love the two-bathroom/five-berth cabins and the connecting staterooms. Carnival has continued the cove balcony cabins on deck 2 that have cozy balconies closer to the water line and the spa cabins that provide special access and benefits.

Carnival  has kept many of its guests' favorite venues on the new Carnival Magic, but also added some new ones that are sure to please its thousands of mainstream North American guests. Although the ship is primarily marketed to North America, we had an international group of guests on our Mediterranean cruise, including about 600 Russians. They all seemed to be having a great time, and it's fun to interact with people from different cultures and countries on a cruise ship.

The Carnival Magic is a good fit for those who love big cruise ships and are looking for a fun and memorable cruise, filled with opportunities to socialize with other guests or with their own companions or family. It doesn't have as many alternative restaurants as many other newer ships do, but there's enough diversity of cuisine to satisfy anyone on a one- or two-week cruise.

27 Carnival Magic Cruise Tips

  • March 3, 2018

Perhaps the Carnival Magic is so wildly popular because it’s been around long enough to accrue a loyal following. Or maybe there’s just something special about the ship which keeps people coming back for more. Whatever the reason, the Magic is often cited by Carnival Cruise Line devotees as not only a favorite, but a ship that many have sailed time and again since first it was launched in 2011.

Carnival Magic sail away

Certainly, there’s a lot to love. The Dream Class ships are, to many, an ideal size. Others love The Lanai, a half-mile promenade which wraps around an entire deck, something that’s increasingly rare these days. Whatever the reason, the Magic is as beloved as it is popular.

Whether you’ve sailed her repeatedly or are considering booking the Magic for the first time, we thought we’d offer up some tips, thoughts and even a few secrets that will help make your trip on this amazing ship all the more special.

1. Book a Cove Balcony

If you like being close to the water, this type of stateroom — which was introduced on Dream Class ships — is ideal. Plus, you get all the benefits of a balcony at a lower cost. Their unique construction offers a lot of protection from the weather while also offering up a unique view, as the passing scenery seems almost framed by the surrounding bulkhead.

Even if you want to have breakfast in the main dining room or lido deck area, consider ordering coffee from room service. After all… who really wants to face the day, let alone your fellow passengers, without caffeine? Best of all, breakfast room service is complimentary.

3. Get a Head Start on Formal Night

Consider leaving your cabin a few minutes earlier than normal on the formal night. Why? People are all dressed up with somewhere to go… and a whole lot of them want to get their pictures taken. Because there are various spots set up around the ship at which photographers are stationed, things can get a little congested as you make your way toward the Southern (aft) or Northern Lights (mid) dining rooms. (Plus, you might wanna get your picture snapped before dinner, too!)

4. Try Something Different For Lunch

Pasta dishes Carnival Magic

It’s easy to hit the buffet come lunchtime, but there are a whole lot of options available… including Cucina Del Capitano. Yes, the restaurant is a for-fee spot at dinner time, but at lunchtime, they offer a variety of pasta dishes (and a decent Caesar salad), and it’s all complimentary.

5. Escape the Kids

Located on the very top deck and at the very front of the ship is Serenity… aka a little slice of heaven. (And as it turns out, heaven comes with two hot tubs.) This adult’s only retreat is the perfect escape… and the further forward you go, the quieter the space you’ll be able to find. Get there early — especially on sea days — if you want a good seat. This is also a great place to relax in the evenings and catch the sunset.

6. Snack in the RedFrog

Carnival Magic Red Frog Pub

Everybody knows this favorite hangout offers a big selection of Caribbean rums and amazing beers, many don’t realize that it’s also a great place to grab some munchies like wings, sliders, conch salad, and grouper fingers. Yes, each snack will cost you $3.33 but they’re well worth it and the perfect thing to hold you over until dinner time (or to soak up some of those drinks)!

7. Eat Free BBQ

If you’re a BBQ fan, Deck 5 starboard (that’s the right side of the ship, for those who are nautically challenged) is the place you wanna head. That’s where you’ll find Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQ… as well as a whole lot of people. This spot can get crowded, so it’s best to try and hit it as soon as it opens. (Check the Fun Times in order to figure out when that is.) My personal favorite? The smoked beef brisket, the chicken and the mouth-watering macaroni and cheese.

8. Check Lido Marketplace hours daily

lido deck marketplace carnival magic

Trust me when I say there’s nothing worse than coming back from an excursion, dawdling in your room for a while… and then finding out the Lido Deck Marketplace — where you’d planned to grab a bite — is closed. Make sure you know when they’re open and when they’re not… although truth be told, as on any cruise ship, you’re never going to go hungry. There’s always going to be something available… including room service.

9. Take Time to Walk The Decks

Carnival Magic cruise ship

On many modern ships, it’s tough (if not impossible) to actually walk the entire circumference of a deck without encountering a roadblock of some sort. But on the Magic, deck five allows you to stroll to your heart’s content, completely unencumbered.

10. Be Careful Where You Book

This holds true for any ship but it’s worth remembering: Always check the deck plans carefully (and talk to your travel agent) before booking. Nobody wants to be directly above or below a nightclub but let’s face it… someone’s going to wind up there. Smart cruisers know that not every stateroom — even within the same classification — is the same. By taking the time to do a little research, you can make sure you’re exactly where you want to be.

11. Bypass The Casino To Avoid The Smoke

The casino can be pretty smoky, but it also happens to be smack-dab in the middle of deck five. But you can bypass it by taking deck four below or walking the hallways on deck six above it. There is a staircase just aft of the casino that will put you in the middle of the promenade so you can avoid it all together. You will just have to walk a flight of stairs to get there.

See Carnival Magic Deck Plans

12. get your food on asap.

Carnival Magic Pig and Anchor BBQ

If you’re like me, there’s probably some food item on board that you’ve been looking forward to pretty much since the day you booked the cruise. In my case, it’s something from Guy’s Burger Joint . If so, head there as soon as you get on board. While everyone else is still trying to figure out where things are (or stopping in the atrium for a vacation-starting drink), you’ll be able to enjoy your must-have treat without waiting in line. Plus, what better way to kick things off than with something you’ve been looking forward to for so long?

13. Take Advantage Of The Spa Showers

One of the benefits of visiting the spa is the shower. The stalls are bigger than your stateroom’s shower, and the towels are nicer, too. Fun fact: While most people work out before hitting the showers, nobody says you have to. Live it up!

14. Know Which Hot Tubs To Hit

carnival magic hot tub

Carnival Magic has a whole lot of hot tubs… the secret is avoiding ones that are going to be overcrowded or have kids in them. Obviously, the hot tubs in the Serenity area are great for avoiding kids, given that that’s the adult’s only area. But there are also four hot tubs on deck five — two on either side of the ship — which are rarely crowded. In fact, it’s usually pretty easy to find one there that’s completely empty.

15. Bring a Sweater To The Shows

For some reason, the air can be pretty chilly in places like the theater and the comedy club. Better to have a sweater that you don’t need than to get there and find yourself shivering through the whole show!

16. Hit Ocean Plaza for Breakfast

Carnival Magic cruise ship

If you don’t want to fight the crowds in the Lido Marketplace at breakfast time — but also don’t feel like doing a whole sit-down meal thing — swing by Ocean Plaza. Right next to the coffee bar, you’ll find a great continental breakfast spread. It’s perfect for folks who want a little nosh to tide them over until their next meal.

17. Buy the Spa Pass, Pronto

If you’re thinking about getting a spa pass, purchase it before you set sail. They only sell a certain number, and they can sell out quickly, as the thermal spa is pretty popular. This is a situation where you need to commit early or risk missing out.

18. Make Sure To See The Shows

Carnival Magic playlist production shows

Carnival is once again moving towards using live musicians in their Playlist Production shows, and it makes a big difference. The shows offered on my recent seven-night sailing were Flick, Country Road, America Rocks, 88 Keys, and Lip Sync Battle.

19. Get to the Shows Early

Both the production and comedy shows fill up fast, so it’s best to get there as soon as the doors open. There is usually a pre-show presentation in the main theater that starts 30 minutes before the show, and the comedy lounge opens its doors about 30 minutes in advance.

20. Download the Hub App

The Hub App will become your best friend over the course of the cruise, so download it before you even arrive at the port. The app will give you access to your photos, let you monitor your onboard spending, allow you to set up alerts so you don’t miss activities you want to take part in, look at menus and more. Once you’re on the ship, the app is free to use. (Just make sure your phone is set to airplane mode so that it doesn’t try to connect to the ship’s cellular network!)

Read More: 11 Reasons to Download the Hub App

21. Strike A Pose… Or Lots of Them

Every time you see a photographer, jump in front of that camera and let them snap your picture! There’s no charge, and who knows? They might wind up snapping a picture that you love so much you just have to purchase it! Plus, now that the Magic has switched to a digital system, you don’t have to worry that they’re wasting a lot of paper printing out photos you’re not going to purchase. And it’s crazy convenient to look at your portfolio either in the Pixels gallery or via the Hub app or even on the interactive television in your stateroom!

22. Enjoy The Silence

hot coffee relaxation

If you’re looking for a place to chillax away from the hustle and bustle, then head to the front of the ship on decks five, six or seven. There are three levels that are easily accessible from the promenade on deck five from the port or starboard side. If you’re on deck six or seven, walk all the way forward and the doors will lead you outside. You may think it’s a crew door but it’s actually accessible to guests and will lead you to a spot most folks never even know exists.

23. Buy The Internet Package In Advance

If you plan on staying connected while you cruise — and let’s face it, these days, who doesn’t? — make sure to purchase the internet plan before you get on the ship. Heading to the My Cruise Manager section of the Carnival website and buying the plan in advance will save you a few bucks. For example, the Social Plan is $5 per device per day onboard, but it’ll only cost you $4 per device per day if you purchase the package ahead of time.

24. Buy CHEERS! package ahead of time

Carnival Magic cheers package

Like with the Internet package, buying the  CHEERS! beverage package in advance offers a pretty significant savings. Pick it up before you sail for $51.95 per person per day. Wait until you’re on board to buy the exact same package, and it’s going to run you $56.95 per person per day.

25. Keep Your Brain Sharp

Sure, you’re here to relax and veg out. But if you want to give your brain a daily challenge, head to the coffee shop to pick up the daily puzzles.

26. Enjoy A Free Glass Of Wine With Your Steak

Carnival Magic steak

Many people don’t realize this, but on every Carnival ship, if you make a reservation in the steakhouse for the first night of the cruise, you will get a complimentary bottle of wine with your meal. They pick the red or white wine you’re offered, or you can get a percentage off a bottle of your choice.

27. Be Quick to Snap Up Faster To The Fun

On a ship like Carnival Magic that holds around 4,000 guests, Faster to the Fun sells out quickly, usually months ahead of the sailing. If you don’t have priority status with the cruise line, consider using this to get on the ship quicker. For a seven-night cruise, it costs $69.95 per cabin, not per person. Some of the perks include priority boarding, express luggage service and a dedicated guest services line.

The Carnival cruise ship Magic has a total of 35 wheelchair-accessible cabins (for disabled passengers) and 83 Cloud 9 Spa cabins (of them 24 Inside, 4 Ocean-view, 53 Balcony, and 4 Suite). The number of all cabin categories is 34.

Connecting rooms ("family cabins") are located on decks 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. The list of connecting cabins grades includes 2 beds (4E, 8P), 3 beds (PT, 6L), 3 beds (6A), 2-3 beds (8B, 8E, 8D), 2-4 beds (8A, 8F), and 2-3-4 beds (6M, 7C). Handicap staterooms (35 total) are in categories OS-Ocean Suie (1), Balcony (2), Oceanview (13), Interior (15) and Small Interior (4).

Follows the review of Carnival Magic staterooms as amenities, furniture, and complimentary services:

Carnival Magic Suites (Grand, Ocean, Cloud 9 Spa) have 2 twin beds (convertible to king), dressing area (walk-in closet, vanity table, chair), private bathroom (WC, shower, bathtub, bidet, double sinks). Some GS-OS suites have a single/double sofa bed for 3rd/4th person. All balcony accommodations feature a private balcony with sliding glass doors (table, patio chairs, rail with clear glass panel).

All Carnival Cloud 9 Spa cabins have exclusive access to the Spa facilities on Panorama Deck 11. Their grades are Spa Suite (SS), Spa Balcony (8S, 8P), Spa Oceanview (6S) and Spa Inside (4S). Carnival Cloud 9 Spa rooms have the following complimentary amenities, services and perks (applicable for two guests per stateroom only): Thermal Suite and Thalassotherapy Pool (complimentary, unlimited access), 2 fitness classes (complimentary, Yoga or Pilates), 2 metabolism tests (complimentary), 1 Scrub Kit (complimentary, for the Thermal Suite), bathrobes, slippers, deluxe in-room bath amenities (by Elemis – shampoo, conditioner, sharp shower gel, vitamin-rich body lotion, 1 hand and 1 body soap disks), priority Spa reservations (must be made by 6 pm on embarkation day). Passengers booked in Cloud 9 Spa cabins also enjoy Spa treatment discounts while the ship is docked in ports of call – 20% off (1st), 30% off (2nd) and 40% off (3rd treatment).

Premium Vista Balcony cabins are located around the ship’s aft corners and have same suite amenities (incl a wrap-around balcony). Extended Balcony cabins are in 2 grades – 8N and 8M (both with aft ship location). These staterooms have 50% larger balconies, 3 closets (in all grades balcony rooms), full bathroom (shower). Cove Balcony cabins feature floor-ceiling window doors leading to a private cove (partially enclosed) veranda.

Oceanview cabins have a picture window and twin beds don’t convert to king when both upper beds are in use. Some have a sofa and/or upper beds (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person. Spa Oceanview rooms are with obstructed views, and some are with upper bed (Pullman) for 4th person.

Inside cabins with windows have either Porthole Window (PT, on decks 1 and 2) or Picture Window (4J, on decks 6, 7, 9 and 10-Lido). Some Porthole cabins have a sofa bed for a 3rd person, some Picture Window rooms have a sofa and/or upper bed (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person. Small Inside cabins have bunk beds (upper/lower Pullman beds), living area (vanity, chair), bathroom (shower).

All Carnival Magic staterooms offer as standard/complimentary amenities a living area (vanity, seating), smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies, bookings-reservations, Room Service ordering), direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), hairdryer, en-suite bathroom (WC-toilet, shower, single sink-vanity, bathrobes, bathroom amenity basket/replenished upon request), custom-made beds (Carnival Comfort Bed System), beach towels, mini-bar/fridge, individual air-conditioning, complimentary 24-hour room service. Bibles (Gideon version) are provided upon request.

The Carnival’s Sail & Sign card (cashless onboard credit account) doubles as stateroom key. The S&S credit program allows charges on purchases and tips/gratuities directly to a personal account throughout the Carnival cruise. The card has a designated owner and must be utilized for all money transactions on the ship as cash is accepted as a form of payment only at the casino. These cards are provided to all passengers (incl minors) immediately upon boarding the ship. Balance updates are provided at Guest Services desk (at any time). They can also be checked via the smart TV in each stateroom.

The ship’s interactive TV system allows passengers to purchase movies on demand, to order room service and to check the Sail & Sign account’s status. The on-demand movie list has approx 25 films available for ordering at USD 5 per movie. Adult-content films cost USD 10 per movie. Depending on satellite reception (Carnival Magic location at sea), the complimentary in-cabin TV programming includes the following channels: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CNN (Domestic, International, Espanol), TCM (classic movies), cartoons (Boomerang, CN), TNT, TBS. There are 2 complimentary movie channels showing a film every 3 hours (both starting at 12 noon). One shows all-time favorites (PG -13 rated) and the other shows all-time family favorites (G / PG-rated). The following TV channels are Carnival-themed and also complimentary: Fun Finds TV, Cruise Director, Fun Aboard, Park West Art, Shore Tours, Ship Position, live cam views (webcams positioned forward and on lido deck), Audible Funtimes, Photo, Music. Sporting events (ESPN, ESPN 2) are shown only on big screens – at the ship’s Sports Bar and Seaside Theatre (not in cabins/suites). All the TV’s connection ports are intentionally disabled, which makes it impossible to connect it with personal devices (cameras, DVDs, USBs, iPods, gaming consoles, etc).

Bathroom amenities vary each time, so it’s advisable you bring your own. Samples may include toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, body lotion, razor, antiacids. There is a wall-mounted dispenser in the shower stall (for liquid soap and shampoo). Electric power outlets are located in the desk/vanity area – one 110 V outlet (3-pronged, USA grounded) and one 220 V outlet (European standard). The bathroom’s 2-pin plug can be used only for electric razors.

The new Carnival beds are Europe-manufactured exclusively for the company. The ensemble includes custom pillows (trademarked “New Generation Pillows”, 100% cotton), duvet (100% hypoallergenic, ultra-fine, satin-striped), cover, deluxe sheets (high-quality cotton), pillowcases (ultra-fine, satin-striped), 8-inch / 20 cm spring mattresses (trademarked “Carnival Comfort”). Alternative (non-allergenic) bedding is also available. It includes 100% polyester blankets, sheets and pillowcases (60/40 cotton-polyester) and New Generation Pillows (100% cotton). Note: Trundle beds don’t have Carnival Comfort mattresses.

Carnival-logoed Beach Towels are provided in each cruise accommodation for passengers to take ashore. Beach towels are also available for purchasing (at $22). Bathrobes (2) are provided in all cruise suites and also in “Cloud 9 Spa” cabins/suites. Additional bathrobes are provided upon request. For all other cruise accommodations, bathrobes are provided (upon request) during the turndown service on the first evening. Bathrobes can be purchased at $49 (adult size) and $24 (children sizes /2-4 yo and 6-8 yo).

Life jackets are used in cases of emergency only (not at the ship pools). Lifejackets are located within passenger/crew cabins (in the closet). They are available in 3 sizes – adult, child, and infant. Each of the cabins has a safe (located in the closet) with approx dimensions (inches/centimeters) – width (10/25), height (9/23) and depth (8/20). Cabin safes can be accessed by any magnetic strip card. It is advisable not to use a valid credit card (or driver’s license), but an old expired card (or some rewards card) instead. Some safes are with a keypad (personal code). Safes can be opened also by the ship’s security.

All cabin and suite mini-bars are stocked with premium liquors ($6-9,25), beer ($6,25), energy drinks ($5), soft soda/beverages ($2), bottled water ($3,75). In-cabin babysitting is not available (read more at Camp Ocean below). Cribs in cruise cabins are provided complimentary (upon request). In Main Dining Rooms are provided complimentary high chairs and booster seats.

Laundry facilities are at extra-charge – $3,25 (per washer or dryer load) and $1,5 per box (detergent/water softener, dispensed from the vending machine in the room). Launderettes (open between 6:30 am – 12 midnight) are located on all cabin decks. Each laundry room is equipped with 2-3 washers, 2-3 dryers, 1 ironing board/iron. All laundry machines are coinless (can be operated using S&S cards only). While the ship is in port, washing machines are closed (only dryers and irons can be used). Valet laundry service is handled through the cabin steward. Prices are per item – wash-and-press ($2 – $7,50) and dry-cleaning ($3 – $10,50).

Smoking in cabins/suites and on their balconies is prohibited. On Carnival Magic, smoking allowed areas (cigarettes /incl electronic cigarettes) are Vibe Nightclub (disco /not allowed on the dance floor), Casino (designated areas), Casino Bar. Smoking (incl of cigars and tobacco pipes) is allowed on designated outdoor areas on Deck 5 portside (forward/midship/aft) and on Deck 11 starboard (midship/aft).

Funville@Sea is free of charge Intranet service providing information on onboard activities and events schedule, bar and restaurant menus, deck maps, Fun Times (newspaper), FunAshore (tour guides), Carnival cruise news, itinerary-related weather reports, onboard social network (tracking/messaging other passengers). The complimentary service is available via the Infotainment system (in all cabins) and also at the FunHub stations around the ship.

Current Carnival Magic gratuities (per day per person) are USD 12,95 (for standard cabin passengers) and USD 13,95 for suite passengers. The list of perks for all suites includes: priority embarkation/debarkation/tendering (all ports), priority main dining room reservations, complimentary bottled water in cabins, a complimentary bag of laundry (one per cruise), enhanced turndown service.

Since 2017, Carnival Cruise Line offers a new program allowing ship passengers to customize their steward service by choosing to have the cabin serviced in the morning, at night or both (twice a day). All guests can choose from a list of additional cabin amenities, among which are bathrobes, extra pillows, blankets, closet hangers. All guests can also specify how often the bed linens to be changed during the cruise. Your personal preferences can be selected from a services menu card left in each of the ship’s staterooms. By default, if you make no selections on the card, your room service steward will service the accommodation twice daily.

Carnival Cruise Line shares key question about cruise ports

In August, Carnival Cruise Line had to evacuate Grand Turk early due to incoming weather.

This was during Hurricane Ernesto, and Carnival Magic needed to leave the dock before the storm arrived.

Such situations are rare but they do happen, and the cruise line pulled out all the stops to let passengers know what was happening, since the departure change happened after people had left the ship.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line defends a major main dining room change

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald even shared the information on his Facebook page, since some passengers might view his page while they were in port or might get an alert about his post.

"This is an update for Carnival Magic guests only. If you are ashore in Grand Turk, please return to the ship by 2:30 p.m.," he wrote. "Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate this evening, and the ship will have to sail earlier than planned."

At the time, the cruise line sent out emails and text alerts to all passengers. It also sent crew members onto the island to alert passengers about the change.

The effort succeeded and Carnival managed to get everyone on board, but it did raise the question of how the cruise line can communicate with passengers when they are off the ship.

That's a safety question because anyone left in Grand Turk would have been stranded on an island about to be hit by a major storm.

Carnival asks a communications question

"If we needed to call you on your cell phone while you were ashore in port, would you have your phone switched on to receive calls and texts?" Heald asked on his Facebook page. "Thoughts please."

More than 3,300 people commented on the post. Many said that their phones would be on but they probably would not answer.

"Yes. Text messages are free. However, I don’t usually answer calls (especially 'unknown' callers) so it is doubtful I would answer," wrote Erika Easton.

Many U.S. cellphone plans offer limited calling and text messages in most Caribbean ports. All cruise passengers should check what their plans cover before they leave on their cruises. That's because some plans require an upgrade or purchase of day/week passes to ensure reasonably priced coverage in foreign cruise ports.

Some passengers said they never turned their phones on even when they were in port because they feared getting hit with unexpected charges.

"Absolutely not unless it is a port within my service area. Otherwise, it is airplane mode the entire cruise," asserted Dean Grassino.

Melanie Lulue agreed.

"Same, I don't like expensive surprises," she added.

One commenter might change how she uses her phone in port because she had not considered the safety aspect of the ship contacting her.

"Nope, once we sail my phone is in airplane mode so I don’t get ridiculous charges from my carrier. However, I see your point for an emergency or something important the ship needing to be able to get in contact with us," posted Sheryl McCauley Chase.

Inside Business | Carnival Cruise Line adds more vacation packages from Norfolk in 2026-27

Carnival Sunshine will embark on its first cruise from Norfolk's Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center on Feb. 11, 2025. Additional cruises have been added to the ship's agenda for the 2026 - 2027 season. (Courtesy of Carnival Cruise Line)

The announcement in essence triples the number of dates available from the city by opening bookings through 2027, said Stephen Kirkland, who runs the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center as executive director of Nauticus. Until Tuesday, mainly 2025 dates were available for booking.

Carnival Sunshine will arrive at the terminal for its first cruise on Feb. 11, he said. This will be the start of year-round weekly cruises from the Mermaid City. The arrival date is four days earlier than anticipated and follows a trans-Atlantic cruise from Marseille, France, where the ship has a planned two-week stay in dry dock.

The cruises vary from four to nine days, depending on the selected package and destination, and include days at sea with onboard activities and shore excursions. Vacationers can sail to Bermuda; the Bahamas with stops in Half Moon Cay, Bimini, Nassau and Celebration Key; Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos; the eastern Caribbean including stops in San Juan, Puerto Rico; Amber Cove, Dominican Republic; and St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands; and Canada and New England with port calls in Halifax, Saint John and Sydney.

“What’s distinctive about all these sailings is the incredible diversity of itinerary options, and that’s due to Norfolk’s unique geographic position,” Kirkland said.

The 102,853-ton Carnival Sunshine maintains a guest capacity of 3,002 passengers and a crew of 1,040.

“Upon arrival, we’ll debark those guests and then embark the first passengers from Norfolk for a cruise to the Bahamas,” Kirkland said.

The company last cruised from Norfolk with Magic in October 2023. During the down time this year, the city’s terminal has been undergoing enhancements to prepare for the increase in Carnival cruises. Kirkland said they will be ready to welcome passengers in February.

“Just this week, we met with Carnival representatives here in Norfolk to discuss the upcoming year-round activity and how to roll out the red carpet for these guests,” he said.

Cruise goers will be arriving weekly to Norfolk from across the country and especially throughout the mid-Atlantic, Kirkland said.

“So, we’ve also been meeting with hotels, businesses and others to make sure we’re collectively ready as a community,” he said.

Why Cruise Demand Is Even Bigger Now Than Pre-Pandemic

When the Grand Princess — a cruise ship that carried thousands of passengers bound for Mexico — instead sailed into an Oakland, California, port in early 2020, the ship quickly became a symbol of the COVID-19 pandemic. The vessel's passengers were among the first documented cases of coronavirus in the U.S. And as they waited — quarantined in their onboard staterooms — the image of a floating city-state adrift in a sea of uncertainty became a defining image of the era.

Journalists , politicians and infectious disease experts have referred to cruises as “petri dishes.”

Yet, despite the early skeptics and pandemic-induced challenges, the cruise industry has not only survived but thrived. In fact, demand for cruises is now even higher than it was before the pandemic.

Cruises make a comeback

The number of cruise transactions worldwide in the first quarter of 2024, including bookings and onboard purchases, was about 16% more than the same period in 2019, according to a 2024 report from the Mastercard Economics Institute.

More money is floating into cruises, too. Mastercard found that, as of May 2024, nine out of the last 10 all-time record spending days in cruises occurred in 2024.

Spending on cruises is not just up pre-pandemic, but over the past year. According to Bank of America credit and debit card data from May 2024, spending on cruises is up 12% year-over-year.

Why are cruises so hot in 2024?

A few factors indicate why cruises are sailing toward growth:

Pent-up demand: Cruises are, in part, riding the general wave of pent-up demand for travel. People who skipped cruises (or trips as a whole) in the early years of the pandemic might now be ready to return.

Appeal to older demographics: While there are certainly great cruises for families or cruises for young couples, cruises tend to have special appeal to older folks. According to Bank of America’s internal data from January through May 2024, baby boomers, (which the company defines as people born between 1946 and 1964) make up around half of total spending on cruises.

Unique offerings: Cruises these days are appealing to younger demographics, too.

Disney Wish, which is the newest in Disney Cruise Line’s fleet, capitalizes on "Frozen" fandom with a one-of-a-kind “Frozen”-themed restaurant that includes an Olaf puppet, live music (performing songs from the film, of course) and technology such as invisible fiber optics embedded in the ceiling designed to look like Elsa’s magic.

That’s not the only example of unique experiences that can only be had at sea.

The Sun Princess by Princess Cruises offers a cruise line version of the Magic Castle, which is a famously tough-to-get-into, exclusive club in Los Angeles. The cruise line version, called Spellbound by Magic Castle, guides guests through magic-themed rooms and serves them clever cocktails. The biggest difference between the Los Angeles version versus the cruise version is that the latter is quite easy to get into. All you need is to book a sailing on the Sun Princess and reserve your spot, which means paying an additional $149 admission fee.

Other unique cruise line bars include the Skyy Vodka Ice Bar aboard certain Norwegian Cruise Line ships. The entire bar (including seats and glasses) is made entirely from ice.

More cruises on the horizon

As many of the biggest cruise operators are expanding their fleets, cruisers now have even more choices. Disney’s current fleet of five ships is an example of an operator in the midst of massive growth.

Among the new ships to join Disney’s fleet include a Japan-based cruise, which is expected to launch in early 2029. Then in August 2024, Disney announced four additional ships, which are expected to be ready between 2027 and 2031. That means Disney’s fleet of five will grow to 13 by 2031.

The first of those new ships, the Disney Treasure, will take its maiden voyage in December 2024. The Haunted Mansion Parlor, which is a bar themed to the iconic theme park attraction, is among the ship’s most-anticipated features.

Carnival Corporation, the world's largest cruise company, also made waves this year when it announced a new ship would join its namesake Carnival Cruise Line brand. The ship, which is expected to be ready by 2027, marks Carnival’s first newbuild order in five years — suggesting the company is ready to invest after a pandemic-era lull.

Sure, the pandemic cast a long shadow over the cruise industry. But going forward, the industry appears to be full steam ahead.
