As part of Spain, Tenerife is within the EU and the Schengen area. The entry requirements differ, depending on whether you are travelling to Tenerife from another Schengen member state, an EU country that is not part of the Schengen area, or a third country.

Tenerife Entry Requirements for Citizens of Non-EU / Non-Schengen countries

Since the end of the Brexit transition period on 31/12/2020, this includes the UK .

You will  need a passport  to be able to travel to Tenerife. It is important to check the  age and expiry date  to ensure that it is valid for travel. Your passport has to meet two criteria :

• Valid for 3 months  or more after the day you leave Tenerife. Please check the  expiry date  of your passport. AND
• Less than 10 years old  when you travel to Tenerife. This is calculated from the  date of issue .

Please note : If your passport was renewed early, some additional months may have been added to its expiry date. Your passport may therefore still be valid for 3 months on the day of your return from Tenerife, but may already be more than 10 years old from the date of issue. Please check  in good time before you travel  that your passport fulfils  both criteria . The above information is based on the advice from the European Union website . Some airlines are currently requesting passport validity of 6 months or more at the time of travel, so please double-check your airline’s requirements.

Tourists on short trips

The visa requirements for Tenerife will vary, depending on your nationality . Citizens of many countries do not currently require a visa if they visit Tenerife as a  tourist for short trips . These countries include

• The United Kingdom
• The United States
• New Zealand
• amongst many others

Please see the European Union website for a full list of countries whose nationals are exempt from the visa requirement.

If you are travelling to Tenerife from one of the above-mentioned countries, the following rules apply:

• You can stay up to  90 days  in any  180-day period .
• However, if you are also visiting other EU countries, you will need to check that you do not spend more than  90 days in total across all the countries you visit, in any given 180-day period.

Business travel and longer stays

Different rules apply for business travel and longer stays. If you do require a visa, you will need to apply for this at the Spanish embassy in your country of residence prior to travelling to Tenerife.

Additional requirements

If you are visiting Tenerife as a tourist from a non-EU / non-Schengen country, you may also be asked to provide proof of the following:

• a return ticket
• the address of your accommodation in Tenerife
• sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Tenerife (currently, this equals € 100 per day)

New procedures announced

Please note, that these procedures are not yet operational .

There are changes ahead for nationals from non-Schengen /non-EU countries when visiting Spain (and/or other European countries). These were intended to be launched in 2023 but have already been postponed several times.

ETIAS – Travel Authorisation

Nationals from non-EU/non-Schengen countries will soon be required to apply for travel authorisation ahead of their journey to Tenerife. This new scheme is called ETIAS, which stands for European Travel Information and Authorization System. A valid ETIAS authorisation will enable the person to visit Spain (and/or other European countries) as a tourist for short stays (please see above).

Once operational, an ETIAS travel authorisation can be obtained via the official website for a fee of € 7 and will be valid for 3 years . When applying for ETIAS travel authorisation, you will need to provide some  personal information , e.g. your name, address, passport details and current occupation. You will also be asked questions about criminal convictions, past travel to conflict zones, and you will need to  outline your travel plans  during your stay in Europe. According to the latest information, ETIAS is now due to become operational in mid-2025 .

EES (short for Entry/Exit system) is an IT system that will be used at passport control for passengers from non-EU, non-Schengen countries. The EES will automate border control procedures and replace passport stamping. This will speed up the process and increase the accuracy of the checks that are being carried out. The EES is due to start on the 10th of November 2024.

Tenerife Entry Requirements for Citizens of Non-Schengen EU countries

A valid passport or national identity card is required for entry.

Due to the freedom of movement agreement within the EU, a visa is not required.

This currently applies to the following countries

Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania

Please note

From the end of March 2024 , Romania and Bulgaria will join Europe’s Schengen border-free zone for air travel . This means that there will be no more inspections for travellers arriving at Tenerife Airport from Bulgaria and Romania from 31/3/2024.

Tenerife Entry Requirements for Citizens of Schengen EU countries

Passport / id card.

EU citizens who are travelling within the Schengen area are not usually required to show a passport or national identity card for travel. However, you will still need to bring one of these documents with you, as foreigners who are on Spanish territory are obligated to carry valid proof of identity with them.

Due to the freedom of movement agreement within the EU, no visa is required.

Great news! Spain has dropped its ongoing COVID-19 travel restrictions from October 2022, especially for those travelling from the UK.

This means that vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers alike can now enjoy all that Spain has to offer without the worry of additional testing or proof of vaccination.

This should bring a sense of freedom and peace of mind to everyone looking to travel to Spain .

Entry Requirements From Non/EU Schengen Countries

You will also be pleased to know if you are travelling to Spain from a non/EU Schengen country all the Covid 19 restrictions have also been lifted.

Travelling to Spain From The UK

The entry rules for UK citizens into Spain are the same as other EU and NON-EU citizens as far as the COVID-19 regulations are concerned, from the 21st of October 2022 you are not required to:

• Show proof of being fully vaccinated
• Show proof of a negative COVID-19 test
• Show proof of having recovered from COVID-19 in the last 6 months.
• No need to complete a health control form prior to travel.

Additional Required Documents

On entering Spain as a tourist you may be required to show further documents if requested such as:

• A valid return or onward ticket.
• You have enough money for your stay ( currently around 100€ per day per person )
• A hotel booking confirmation.
• Proof of address if you have a second home.
• An invitation of proof of address from a third party, family member or friend.

Are There Any Restrictions For Entering The Canary Islands?

Those travelling to the Canary Islands (which include hotspots Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Tenerife) are subject to the same restrictions as those travelling to mainland Spain.

It is also important to check with your travel provider to ensure you are aware of any additional restrictions that may apply to your travel plans just in case they change at any time due to an increase in infections.

Are The Rules For The Balearic Islands Any Different?

No, there are also no restrictions. The rules for entering the Balearics (Ibiza, Mallorca, Menorca and Formentera) are the same as mainland Spain.

Can I Travel To Other EU Countries After Arrival In Spain?

Yes once you have entered Spain you would be able to freely visit other EU member states without any restrictions.

What  Are The Rules And Restrictions Once In Spain

As of June 2023, the wearing of face masks is no longer obligatory.

Only in certain cases would you need to wear a facemask, this could include high-risk areas of a hospital such as where immune-compromised patients are located, ICU, operating rooms and oncology wards.

Procedure If You Test Positive For Covid Once In Spain

Should you feel ill and test positive for Covid 19 during your holiday you should self-isolate and inform your immediate contacts that may have travelled with you.

If you do have to go outside in public it is advisable to wear a mask and avoid crowded spaces.

If the symptoms persist you should contact your local health authority and/or your travel insurance company.

The EU Digital COVID-19 Certificate

The EU Digital Covid Certificate is proof that you have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or received a negative test result or have recovered from COVID-19.

If you are travelling to Spain by air or sea from an EU Schengen Area Country ( see list below ) you will also no longer be required to present a COVID-19 Certificate.

These are the current EU-Schengen Countries:

• Czech Republic
• Netherlands

Possible Future Members Include:

Obtaining an eu digital covid-19 certificate.

The EU Digital COVID-19 Certificate can be obtained free of charge via the national Ministry of Health website in each country. For UK citizens this would be via the NHS - National Health Service website

To date, 49 EU countries are able to issue COVID-19 certificates.

Key Features Of The COVID-19 Digital Certificate:

The certificate is issued in digital and/or paper format and will contain the following:

• Your full name and date of birth
• It will have a QR code
• It will be in your national language and English
• Details on the issuing authority
• All details of the number of tests taken
• Full details of the type of vaccination

Types Of Vaccination Certificates

Vaccination certificates are issued by the Member State where the vaccination has been administered.

Test certificates  are issued by the Member State where the test has taken place.

Recovery certificates are issued by the Member State where the recovered person is located.

Non-EU Citizens Travelling To Spain

Non-EU travellers who are vaccinated with an EU or WHO-approved vaccine are allowed to travel to and enter the EU.

If you have recovered from COVID-19 within 180 days prior to travelling to the EU you will need to prove your recovery with an EU Digital COVID Certificate or a non-EU certificate equivalent to the EU Digital COVID Certificate.

New ETIAS Visa Waiver System

This is separate from any Covid-19 regulations that may be in force at the time you want to travel to Spain.

The ETIAS visa waiver scheme is a new initiative from the European Union to enhance the security of the Schengen Zone and will change your Spain travel requirements.

ETIAS is not a visa, but rather a visa waiver permit or travel authorisation for all current visa-free countries that is proposed to come into effect in early 2025  ( to be confirmed by the E.U )

There are currently around 50 eligible nationalities that will be able to apply for ETIAS when it comes online, these include the United Kingdom and The United States of America.

It is designed to streamline the process of citizens of the United Kingdom entering the Schengen Area from outside the EU.

The ETIAS visa waiver is a short-term travel authorization that allows citizens to travel to and within the Schengen Area without the need for a visa. The authorization is valid for a period of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

It is important to note that you are still subject to the immigration rules of each individual country you visit. For more information, you can visit the official website of the European Union.

In short then, if you are travelling to Spain from the UK you are no longer required to show proof that you have been vaccinated against COVID-19 on entering the country.

However, it is advisable that you carry with you or have a hard copy on your PC or mobile phone, a copy of your EU Digital Covid-19 Certificate just in case the situation changes whilst you are travelling.

What can you bring into Spain from outside the EU and the limitations.

There are certain restrictions on products entering or leaving Spain from countries outside the European Union, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. These restrictions apply to cultural goods, wildlife, plants and their derivatives, vegetable and plant products, weapons and ammunition, medicines, tobacco, and alcoholic beverages.

Regarding tobacco and alcoholic beverages, if you carry the following quantities or more, they must be declared, and the corresponding taxes must be paid: 200 cigarettes, 100 cigarillos, 50 cigars, 250 grams of tobacco, 1 litre of alcoholic beverages with a strength above 22%, 2 litres of alcoholic beverages with a strength below 22%, 4 litres of wine, and 16 litres of beer.

When it comes to medications, only those necessary for personal use are permitted, and they should be accompanied by a copy of the prescription or medical report. It's important to adhere to these regulations to ensure a smooth entry or exit process when travelling to or from Spain.

Cash, Negotiable Bonds and Securities

If you are carrying money, negotiable bonds, or securities exceeding the value of €10,000 (or the equivalent in a foreign currency) per person, it is necessary to declare them at customs.

Tenerife Covid rules: Tourists face tighter restrictions with rule of six as Canary island raises alert level

New regulations mean that travellers must abide by the rule of six for social gatherings indoors and outdoors and bars must now shut by midnight.

Tenerife has tightened its Covid restrictions , including reintroducing the rule of six, in response to a surge in Omicron cases.

The island’s alert level was raised to Level 4 on Monday 10 January meaning that Covid passes are now mandatory for entry into bars, restaurants and other public places.

While the rule of six now applies to all social gatherings, indoors and outdoors, except for those in the same household.

Curfews are also now in place, with bars and restaurants told to shut by midnight.

The rule change will last until January 24, at which point they will be reviewed.

The Canary islands of Lanzarote, La Palma, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura are currently on Level 3, meaning closing hours of 1am and limited capacity for indoor seating.

The smaller islands of El Hierro and La Gomera are currently at Level 2.

New restrictions in Tenerife. Government limits entries to Tenerife for 15 days

The President of the Canary Islands announced new restrictive measures for the island of Tenerife that will come into effect from Friday and will be in force for 15 days.

Ángel Víctor Torres, has announced new measures to stop the advance of COVID-19 in Tenerife after the Extraordinary Government Council held today at the Presidency headquarters. 

What changes?

The curfew will start at 10 pm, instead of 11 pm, like it used to be until now.

Entries and exits to/from Tenerife will be restricted 

Entrances and exits to/from Tenerife will be limited, with certain exceptions.

Trips will be allowed in order to allow people to attend health services, work obligations, return to usual places of residence, renewal of permits or other non-postponed procedures and any other force majeure.

The entry and exit of people to the island of Tenerife is restricted from midnight on December 18 (Friday) to January 1, 2021.

The restriction will apply except for those who can adequately justify trips that occur for any of the following reasons mentioned in article 6 of Royal Decree-Law 926/2020, of October 25, the norm that declares the state of alarm in the country to contain the spread of infections caused by SARS-CoV-2.

These are the exceptions allowed for entry and exists to/from Tenerife until January 1st, 2021:

• Assistance to health centers, services and establishments.
• Compliance with labor, professional, business, institutional or legal obligations.
• Attendance at university, teaching and educational centers, including schools.
• Return to the place of habitual or family residence.
• Assistance and care for the elderly, minors, dependents, people with disabilities, or especially vulnerable people.
• Travel to financial and insurance entities or refueling stations in neighboring territories.
• Required or urgent actions before public, judicial or notarial bodies.
• Renewals of permits and official documentation, as well as other administrative procedures that cannot be postponed.
• Taking official exams or tests that cannot be postponed.
• Due to force majeure or situation of need.
• Any other activity of a similar nature, duly accredited

The authorities also advise against travel between different municipalities in Tenerife.

People who are on the island of Tenerife and return to their island of residence will undergo a diagnostic test on the island of arrival. Those that must travel regularly between islands will be screened periodically.

What does this mean for tourism in Tenerife?

According to the Canary Islands Government :

"In the case of national and foreign tourists who plan to come to the island of Tenerife on holiday, they can take advantage of the exceptions included in the current regulations regarding the right of admission in tourist accommodation establishments, with the condition that a negative test must be presented, that accredits the fact that they are not infected with the new coronavirus."

In a follow-up meeting, the President of the Canary Islands has taken the opportunity to explain that the new, more restrictive measures that will be applied on the island of Tenerife will not affect the arrival of foreign tourists.

In this sense, tourists will be able to still come to Tenerife as long as they have a valid booking in a licensed tourist establishment (like a hotel or legal apartment or villa) and they can provide a certificate for a negative Covid-19 test.

Restaurants close indoor premises and terraces are limited to 50% capacity

All activity inside the premises of bars and restaurants is suspended except for take-out food, and the capacity on the terraces is limited to 50%. The president of the Canary Islands indicated that only people who live together can sit together at a table. 

33% capacity in shopping centers

Regarding shopping centers, their capacity is limited to 33% of their capacity per floor and their parking capacity is also reduced to 50%.

All sports activities carried out indoors and outdoor sports will only be carried out individually.

All mass events are suspended

All large events are suspended, like markets, fairs or festivals.

People residing in the centers for the elderly will not be allowed to leave and visits are also restricted, except for very serious cases.

Public transport reduced to 50% capacity

The capacity of regular public transport is reduced by 50%.

Maximum 6 people at reunions on December 24, 25 and 31

It was also announced for the island of Tenerife that on December 24, 25 and 31 and January 1, family reunions are reduced to six people and a maximum of two cohabitating units, that is, the people who live in the house where the reunion takes place and just one more family from another household.
