Swan River Cruises Perth Review 2024

A Perth Swan River cruise is one of our favourite things to do when we have visitors as it’s a leisurely way to see some of Perth’s top sights from the water. As you depart the city center, you can admire Perth riverfront attractions like the Bell Tower and Kings Park, and glide past pretty suburbs to reach Fremantle, located where the river meets the Indian Ocean.

There’s the option to take the cruise one way, letting you explore Fremantle in your own time, or book a return ticket.

The Swan River is highly important to the Noongar people as, in dreamtime, the river was made by the Waugal rainbow serpent.

Swan River Cruise Departure Point

The Swan River Cruise from Perth to Fremantle leaves from Barrack Street Jetty, in Elizabeth Quay . This jetty is 400m from the Elizabeth Quay train station and bus port.

The free Blue Cat drops off you off at Barrack Square and the ferry leaves from Mends Street Jetty in South Perth to Elizabeth Quay.

Swan River Cruise Perth to Fremantle

As you leave from Barrack Street jetty, you will have a wonderful view of the Bell Tower and Elizabeth Quay as you head out. South Perth is on the opposite side of the Swan River and where you will find Perth Zoo.

As you pass under the Narrows Bridge, which allows the freeway to cross the river, you can see Kings Park , one of the cities main attractions. The freeway continues to run alongside the river on the left, while Mounts Bay Road is on the right. This is where you will see The Old Swan Brewery, now apartments, commercial space, and a restaurant, which dates back to 1879. Dave’s grandad worked there, starting his job for Swan Brewery in February 1950. The brewery moved from these premises in 1966 and the building was redeveloped as a commercial precinct. The Traditional Landowners protested due to the site’s ancient and sacred Aboriginal heritage, but the claims were refused.

Keep a look out for the Eliza Sculpture and the famous Blue Boat House, the Crawley Boatshed. Have a look closely at Eliza as she is often seen wearing various outfits. No one is sure who dresses her but she has worn an assortment of clothes including cocktail dresses, Halloween costumes, Christmas outfits, and school uniforms.

Further along, also on the right, is the University of Western Australia, a world top100 university. This university, opened in 1913, it started with 184 students and now has more than 25,000 students enrolled from 100 countries.

Matilda Bay restaurant, Matilda Bay Reserve and Mounts Bay Sailing Club are further on. Matilda Bay restaurant is a lovely place for lunch or dinner overlooking the Swan River with the Perth city skyline in the background. Our favourite is dinner as there’s something special about seeing the city lights while dining on fresh fish alongside a bottle of Pierro Chardonnay. Matilda Reserve is a beautiful picnic spot, so for a cheaper option, grab some food and head here for amazing views.

Past the point is Nedlands, location of the Nedlands Yacht Club and The Perth Flying Squadrum Yacht Club. Opposite is the riverside suburb of Applecross.

From here onwards, you will be in awe of the luxury homes that front onto the river, some with a private jetty. Perth’s most expensive suburb is here, Dalkeith, with the median house price in May 2021 of A$2.56 million. Although Mosman Park, further along the river, broke the record in 2009 for Australia’s most expensive house, bought by Mineral Resources founder Chris Ellison for A$57.5 million. It still remains Perth’s most expensive home.

As you approach Point Walter, you will see the sand bar, or the spit as us locals call it. The river narrows here between Chidley Point and Blackwall Reach, where you can see the 8m limestone Blackwall Reach Cliffs. This is the deepest part of the Swan River and a popular place for cliff jumping, but people have died doing this, so a sign has now been erected to warn against it. If you want a close up view, consider a Cliffs and Caves Kayak Tour like this one that goes from East Fremantle into Bicton Bay and then along the cliff face.

Point Walter was previously known as Dyoondalup, meaning “place of white sand” and the Blackwall Reach area was known as Jennalup, “place of feet”. This area was traditionally a place for Aboriginal women and children.

As you near the end of the river, you pass East Fremantle with yacht clubs and The Left Bank, a popular “Sunday session” pub. The cruise boat docks at Victoria Quay, where you can easily walk into town or catch one of the free CAT buses .

Once you finished exploring Fremantle, you can take the train back into Perth.

Enjoy nature in Perth

In spring, summer, autumn and winter, have a great time enjoying nature in Perth.

  • By Kevin Smith
  • 24th May, 2024

The modern city of Perth lies on the west coast of Australia where the Swan River winds down from a plateau containing some of the oldest rocks on Earth and forms a broad estuary on the coastal plain. Lines of reef and small islands help shelter a coastline of sandy beaches and low rocky cliffs from Indian Ocean swells. The climate is mild and the plant life diverse.

The relaxed Perth lifestyle is bound to this natural setting and many of the best nature experiences in the Perth area can be found in national parks and other conservation reserves.

Explore the river, the coastal woodlands and lakes, the beaches or the hills and enjoy the nature of Perth.

The Swan and Canning rivers

No visit to Perth is complete without spending time on or near the river. The entire waterway, as well as many adjoining reserves along the river foreshore, make up the  Swan Canning Riverpark .

The river is the city's visual and cultural heart. Known as Derbarl Yerrigan to the Whadjuk people, whose connection to the river spans some 40,000 years, the river today is a focus of activity for walkers and joggers, cyclists and sightseers, paddlers, sailors and other recreational boat users.

  • Explore the network of shared-use trails, enjoy water activities or find a vantage point to relax and take in the natural beauty.
  • Relax at  Matilda Bay Reserve  or check out the black swans, pelicans, migratory waders and a multitude of other birdlife at Pelican Point or Alfred Cove in the  Swan Estuary Marine Park  or in the  Canning R i ver Regional Park .
  • Take a river cruise from Elizabeth Quay across to South Perth, down to Fremantle or upstream to the Swan Valley.

Lakes and Woodlands

  • Yellagonga ,  Herdsman Lake  and  Beeliar  regional parks feature a series of shallow freshwater lakes which are important wetland habitat for birds and other wildlife and have picnic areas and trails.
  • North of the city,  Yanchep National Park  has kangaroos, koalas and abundant birdlife. There are also extensive lawns with shaded picnic facilities, walk trails through natural bushland, cave and cultural tours, a golf course, visitor centre, tearooms, a campground and the Yanchep Inn.
  • South of the city and close to the coast,  Yalgorup National Park  features thrombolites and the Yalgorup lakes. The lakes are Ramsar-listed wetlands which attract migratory birds from around the world. Explore walk trails throughout the park or book a campsite at Martins Tank campground and share an overnight stay with kangaroos, possums and other wildlife.

Perth Hills

Several parks in the hills near Perth are within easy reach for scenic drives, picnics and short walks.

May to November are the best months of the year to explore natural woodlands with moderate temperatures and streams and waterfalls running freely following rains. Wildflowers appear in the hills and throughout the Perth area in spring and are at their brilliant best from September to November.

  • Walk or cycle the Railway Reserves Heritage Trail above the waterfalls in  John Forrest National Park .
  • Walk the river trails and enjoy a picnic while kayakers tackle rapids on the Swan River in  Walyunga National Park .
  • Beelu National Park  as well as  Mundy ,  Banyowla  and  Wungong  regional parks are also excellent walking and sightseeing options.
  • Take a day trip about 100km south of Perth to  Lane Poole Reserve  near Dwellingup. There are picnic areas and river access for canoeing and kayaking. You can also book to stay overnight in one of the campgrounds.

Perth is blessed with almost 100km of fabulous Indian Ocean coastline with limestone reefs offshore, shallow seagrass-filled basins and plentiful white-sand beaches.

  • Marmion Marine Park has excellent opportunities for all forms of water-based activities. Swim in the beach enclosure at Sorrento, snorkel the lagoon at Mettams Pool or surf at Mullaloo. Diving, fishing and whale watching charters are available at Hillarys Boat Harbour.
  • Shoalwater Islands Marine Park has protected beaches and great conditions for water activities. Book a tour to see dolphins and sea lions. From September to June take the ferry to Penguin Island to explore the boardwalks and beaches. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a day on the island.

Perth faces west and watching a sunset over the water can be a perfect way to finish the day.

Tips on the weather

Perth's climate enables outdoor activities year-round.

November to March

  • Typical summer days begin with a beautiful clear morning and cloudless skies and end with a sunset over the water. Rising temperatures are usually followed by Perth's famous 'Fremantle Doctor', a cooling sea breeze that strengthens from the middle of the day.
  • Be prepared for plenty of sunshine, warm to hot temperatures and windy afternoons. Unless you are sailing, windsurfing or kitesurfing, plan most of your outdoor activity for mornings to make the most of cooler conditions and lighter winds, especially in the hills, on the water or at the beach.
  • Pack plenty of drinking water, apply sunscreen and always wear a hat.

April to October:

  • These cooler months are better for longer walks and cycle rides. Enjoy the beaches and on-water activities in good weather.
  • Most rain falls between May and August so pack rain protection and be prepared to take shelter if rain is likely.
  • Even on cool days, be prepared for plenty of sunshine. Carry drinking water, apply sunscreen and always wear a hat.

Keep an eye on the weather using your favourite weather app or bom.gov.au and plan your activities for the most suitable times.

The 5 Best Short Trips From Perth

' src=

Nature and urban life harmoniously combine in Perth. As Australia’s sunniest capital city, the city is marvellously laid-back, liveable and cosmopolitan. However, journey a bit further outside this bustling metropolis and you’ll discover white-sand beaches, world-class wineries and one of Australia’s best marine park wonderlands. So if you’re travelling for business and need to unwind over the weekend or planning a leisure trip, here is a list of our five favourite short trips from Perth.

1. Head to Fremantle for History, Markets and Some of Australia’s Best Beaches

Around thirty minutes south of the city you’ll find Fremantle, arguably one of WA’s coolest destinations and a spot that offers a myriad of must-see attractions suited to any intrepid wanderer.

ƒIf you’re a beach fan, then you’ll be in your watery element here with four main beaches perfect for paddling, picnicking and kite surfing. South Beach offers superb views of Rottnest Island, Port Beach is great for snorkelling, Leighton Beach ideal if you’re considering your first surfing lesson and Bathers Beach a top spot for a sunset fish ‘n’ chips feast.

History buffs enjoying a short trip from Perth should walk the worn pathways of the iconic Fremantle Prison, and if you love all things nautical, head to the WA Maritime Museum. Set on the shoreline of the Indian Ocean, here you can view a number of exhibits including an Oberon class submarine and  Australia II,  the winner of the 1983 America’s Cup.

Love shopping? Then you can’t miss the historic Fremantle Markets. Lively and chaotic, they are located a stone’s throw from the ‘Cappuccino Strip’ and feature over 150 stalls offering everything from jewellery and fashion to local produce and homewares.

2. Feast And Frolick Your Way Through the Swan Valley And Some of the Country’s Best Wineries

If you’re after a half-hour short trip from Perth, then head northeast to the Swan Valley, home to WA’s oldest wine growing region. Here you’ll find over 40 cellar doors, some fantastic breweries and if you’re lucky enough to have a designated driver for the day, can experience the 32-kilometre loop of the Swan Valley Food and Wine Trail, which takes in over 200 gastronomic attractions.

Visit organic wineries and award-winning microbreweries and then settle in for a vineyard-view al fresco lunch, or you can opt to fill a picnic basket with gourmet goodies and then laze about the lushness of Bell Rapids or Whiteman Park.

Here in the Swan Valley you can also pat a local kangaroo at Caversham Wildlife Park, wander through the vintage shops in Guildford, or take home a unique piece fashioned by one of the area’s talented painters, potters, woodworkers or printmakers.

3. Swim, Sail and Snorkel Your Way Around Mandurah and Its Picturesque Canals

If you’re after a seaside-bound day trip from Perth, an hour’s travel south will have you at Mandurah, which is an absolute nirvana for water sports lovers. Swimming, sailing, windsurfing, jet skiing, jet boarding … they’re all on offer here, and if you’re a mad angler, you’ll enjoy the fishing opportunities and the chance for crabbing in the shallow estuaries.

Adrenalin junkies might want to hit the iconic Munda Biddi Bike Trail (it’s the longest track of its kind in the world), play a few rounds of ocean-view golf, or visit Dolphin Quay at the Mandurah Marina.

And of course, no trip to Mandurah would be complete without a boat cruise on the area’s canals, where you can laze about on deck with a glass of bubbles while keeping your eye out for a glimpse of a wild bottle-nosed dolphin or two.

4. View a Breathtaking Underwater World from Busselton’s Jetty and Soak Up Its Maritime History

Thinking about a weekend getaway from Perth? Two and a half hours south of the city centre is Busselton’s pride and joy – its artificial reef and underwater observatory located at the end of the 1.8 kilometre-long Busselton Jetty. Descending eight metres beneath the water’s surface, visitors can view more than 300 marine species within its 9.5-metre-diameter observation chamber.

If you’re a little on the claustrophobic side, opt for a swim of the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean instead, browse through an endless array of homewares stores and boutique fashion outlets, or for a spot of history, take a visit back to the 1800’s amid the memorabilia and the memories of the Busselton Museum.

5. Sip Wine in Margaret River and Marvel at the Wonders of Its Incredible Marine Life

For the perfect weekend escape from Perth, head for the uninterrupted coastline and rolling vineyards of the Margaret River. In just under three hours you’ll find yourself amid more than 150 world-class wineries, renowned for several blends including their cabernet sauvignons and chardonnays. Pair a day of wine tasting with a decadent five-course menu from one of the area’s top restaurants and your taste buds will truly be in heaven.

If you’re into wildlife, the Margaret River region is home to some of the best whale watching in Australia, boasting one of the longest running whale watching seasons in the world. From May right through to early December, Humpbacks and Southern Right Wales splash delightfully about these waters, and if you’re lucky you may even catch a glimpse of a Bottlenose Dolphin, a New Zealand Fur Seal or even the world’s largest living creature, a Blue Whale.

Whether you’re keen to day-trip it in comfort or you’re off to celebrate a wonderfully long weekend free from the hustle and bustle of city life, we can take you there in style.

How to spend the perfect weekend in Perth

S ome might say Perth’s a late bloomer; others may suggest that she’s simply been biding her time. For locals, the secret is most definitely out.

Direct flights to Perth from London have thrown quite the spotlight on the Western capital, revealing a metropolis that basks in more sunlight hours than any other major Australian city, has the beaches to match, and is no slouch after dark. What’s more, Perth has its own island playground 12 miles (19km) off the coast, it lays claim to one of the largest inner-city parks in the world and is ringed with wineries.

Perth’s new accessibility adds to the allure: a flood of hotel and restaurant openings means more pillows for more heads, and higher standards to boot. Liveability has been simultaneously amped. The swish Elizabeth Quay waterfront provides a revitalised platform to the Swan River, while Yagan Square joins the inner city’s ying and yang sides the for the first time in a century: hello free-flowing foot traffic. Another big ticket arrival, the $400M (£227M) Western Australian museum, Boola Bardip opened late 2020, completing the bustling Perth Cultural Centre.

For further Perth inspiration, see our guides to the city's best  hotels ,  restaurants ,  nightlife ,  beaches  and  things to do . If you're planning a longer trip, see our u ltimate itinerary for a two-week holiday in Western Australia .

How to spend your weekend, insider tips.

When should I visit Perth?

Where to stay in Perth

What to bring home

Essential information: what to know before you go

Take a taxi to a breakfast den that’s a local’s hangout. Have the leek and parmesan croquette bowl at Sayers Sister  then walk it off at nearby Hyde Park. Huge Moreton bay fig trees lean over pretty lakes – look for turtles beneath the surface. If you spot a queue curling around a white shopfront, that’s Chu Baker y. It’s worth the wait for literally anything inside, but we particularly love their filled croissants.

Walk for about 40 minutes or take a taxi to Elizabeth Quay , the waterfront development perched on the Swan River. From here, take a one-way Captain Cook Cruise  to Fremantle. Make sure you sit on the right hand side of the boat so you can take in the city skyline, followed by the mansions lining the waterway. Australia’s richest woman lives here, and the cruise commentator will point her abode out. If you’re lucky, you may also spot dolphins in the water.

The cruise will deposit you in Fremantle, Perth’s character-rich port town, loved for its serpentining streets, historic buildings and artsy vibe. Grab a bite at  Moore and Moore , an eclectic café that shares space with a yawning art gallery. The healthful, vegan 'bowl of Moore' is very Fremantle.

Arrange a walking tour of Freo, as it’s affectionately called, with Two Feet and a Heartbeat. The Convicts, Culture & Street Art tour will get you up to speed on the harbour area’s early days, and includes a look at Fremantle’s Unesco World Heritage-listed prison.  When the tour is over, ask your guide to point you in the direction of the Bon Scott statue, at the Fisherman’s Wharf. The late AC/DC frontman grew up in Freo and is buried in its cemetery.

Afterwards, skip across the road to Little Creatures Brewery  for a Rogers Amber Ale, best enjoyed out the back where you can watch working vessels and leisure craft bobbing in the harbour.

You’d be silly to pass up dining at Bread in Common , a part-bakery, part-restaurant housed in an 1890s warehouse. Lamb ribs are the must-have dish – they haven’t left the menu since day one. Ask if you can see the restaurant’s herb garden; it’s impressive.

When you've finished, walk for about two minutes to the Fremantle train station and take it all the way back to central Perth. If you’re still keen for more, pop in to Varnish on King , an excellent speakeasy-style whiskey bar that gets better as the night gets long. For more suggestions of the best nightlife in the city, see our guide .

While summer in Perth is all about crystalline Cottesloe beach , once the weather cools, locals seek out sunshine in more protected haunts. Take the commuter ferry from Elizabeth Quay across the Swan River to South Perth. Just beyond the arrival point, you’ll see Mister Walker . The window-wrapped café-restaurant offers excellent breakfasts with tranquil views – don't miss the Uncle Benny (eggs Benedict).

Belly full, you can either retrace your steps, then take a free public bus from Elizabeth Quay bus station to Kings Park , or simply take a 10-minute taxi ride to Perth’s vast bushland. Try and join a free walking tour (departures at 10am, 12 noon and 2pm) or simply roam through the Botanic Garden , pausing at the 750-year-old boab and crossing the tree canopy bridge.

If you’re in town in September, you’ll find the park splashed with masses of colourful, native wildflowers – a month-long festival offers extra guided walks, as well as open-air exhibitions, live music, wellness pursuits and more – it’ll keep you captivated for hours.

Take another free public bus back to the city and walk up Barrack Street to the Perth Cultural Centre . It’s home to the Art Gallery of WA, the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Urban Orchard, the State Library and, having opened in late 2020, the WA Museum, Boola Bardip.

There are a couple of pod cafés within the pedestrian centre; either grab a quick bite there or walk through to William Street in Northbridge, turn left and sit down at Bivouac Canteen & Bar  for some excellent Middle Eastern-inspired fare. Roam along William Street, keeping an eye out for edgy street art between the small boutiques holding local fashion, quirky gifts, books and more.

Post 5pm, do a classy crawl through Cathedral Square, a revamped heritage precinct spread across Perth’s point zero – the place from which every measurement of WA towns and landmarks begins. Start with craft beer at Petition Beer Corner , started by the people who dreamt up Little Creatures (mentioned above), then pick a dinner venue depending on how flush you’re feeling.

On the rooftop of COMO the Treasury , Wildflower  is Perth’s best and priciest fine diner, specialising in native flavours and sharp technique, while on the ground floor, Petition Kitchen   has a sassy, modern, great-value line-up and in the basement, Long Chim  fires up the tastebuds with unblinkingly authentic (and moderately expensive) Thai cuisine. For more suggestions of the best restaurants in the city, see our guide .

End the night with a door knock on Sneaky Tony's  unmarked iron gateway (38 Roe St). On Friday and Saturday nights, you’ll need to grab a password from their Facebook page , and the doorman will eye you through a medieval peep hole before granting you entry. Slick cocktails and towering candles await.

Given the size of Western Australia, it’s always warm and sunny somewhere. While most people visit during summer and stick to the south, if you’re there in winter, then travelling northward during its dry season is a good idea.

A certain fervour strikes as December 1 approaches. West Australians live for summer: it spells lazy days at the beach, balmy nights, cold beers, holidays and Christmas. It’s also when a whirlwind of festivals tear through town, with the quirky Fringe World colouring Perth in January, and the Perth Festival keeping the party going in February and March. Weekends allow escapes to Margaret River and Sunday afternoons are traditionally spent at the pub. Sure, it gets hot – temperatures can rise to 40°C and sunburn is an ever-present risk – but the mood is joyful. Head south to escape, when the mercury rises.

March through May is a magical time in Perth. While the summer party is over and work has resumed its regular hum, the weather is still gorgeous enough for beach-going, yet the crowds have departed the holiday hotspots of Margaret River and Denmark . That said, Cottesloe’s Sculpture by the Sea exhibition packs out the beach in March. From April, temperatures become more pleasant as you head to northern parts of the state, such as the Pinnacles Desert and Ningaloo , where whale sharks visit until July.

The atmosphere in Perth can slump in the colder months – locals lament any days where the temperature dips below 22°C and tend to hibernate (while rare, it can drop to 0°C overnight). Like migrating birds, many people flock north to blue skies and warm climes. You should do the same: it's the best time to explore the miraculous Kimberley region , land of billions of years old rock formations, waterfalls and Aboriginal rock art.

Come September, thousands of wildflower species bloom across the state, a perfect time for road trips and hikes. The valid 'cheats option' is the annual wildflower festival in Kings Park, which colourfully reveals WA’s floral diversity in dense beds and walkways. The months-long whale migration also draws visitors to the cool south – some 40,000 cetaceans cruise, breach and slap their way along the immense coastline. By October, when Margaret River’s edgy Fine Vines wine festival is held, days are warming up again.

Where to stay

Luxury living.

A restoration of Western Australia’s grand 1890s state buildings has reimagined the disused Treasury, Lands and Titles offices and General Post Office as COMO the Treasury , an elegant haven you’ll never want to check out of. Ever. If you can’t bear to leave the hotel during your stay (and many don’t), you’ll be easily sated by its culinary spread and libations, ranging from fine dining on the roof to a charming taproom, to a buzzing basement restaurant delivering flavourful, authentic Thai.

Designer Digs

QT Perth is dark, sophisticated and slightly kooky. From soul beats, fluorescent splashes and snakeskin in the lifts to black wallpaper featuring melting steel wildflowers, there’s quirky DNA in this modern, centrally located hotel. Rooms are impressively spacious and make an impression with sleek bedside lighting and black marble bathrooms. Its flagship restaurant, Santini, has made a name for itself as one of Perth’s best.

Doubles from AUD $310 (£176)

Budget Bolthole

An anarchist of the hotel world, Tribe Perth does things (delightfully) differently. There’s no minibar, no concierge and no bellhop. Instead, this adult-friendly accommodation bears ultra-modern accommodation that is compact and smartly designed for sleeps and showers. Its focus on social spaces means its communal zones receive a lot of attention, with an excellent library of coveted hardcover books. The hotel also offers free-to-use retro-look bikes for exploring the neighbourhood.

Doubles from AUD $169 (£96)

Neighbourhood watch

William Street in Northbridge is a long strip of cafés, small bars, eclectic shops and local designer boutiques. Up the far end, William Topp  is jammed with covetable gifts and Wines of While  is one of the best bar-restaurants in town. Closer to the centre, dine at svelte Shadow Wine Bar  or shop chic women’s garments at Chachi .

Attractions

Make use of the free guided tours of both Kings Park and Rottnest Island , provided by local volunteers. In the former, tours cover top view spots, an exploration of the botanic garden, spring wildflowers in the bush, and more, and depart daily at 10am, 12pm and 2pm. On the latter, yellow T-shirt-wearing guides are easy to spot. Join them on themed tours, finding quokkas in their natural habitat, learning about the island’s early inhabitants, watching fur seals or hearing about shipwrecks.

Did you know?

You don’t have to go far to find kangaroos in Perth. A collective of female roos reside on Heirisson Island, an oval of land in the middle of the Swan River at the eastern end of the city centre. If you go early in the day, or around sunset, you’re almost guaranteed to spot them grazing in the wetlands or grasses. They’re friendly, so you can gently approach them.

All rooms at the Alex Hotel include an excellent continental breakfast for all guests, so if you book the four-bed bunk room, everyone staying gets to eat for the same nightly room rate. Alex also allows you to bring two friends up to its rooftop overlooking the nightlife hotspot of Northbridge, and the city skyline.

Perth enables free public transport within the  Central Area Transit zone, covering the CBD, parts of Northbridge, West and East Perth as well as South and central Fremantle.. Look out for the CAT buses, covered with black panther-like wraps. All the public buses running along St Georges Terrace are also free, including those that stop at Kings Park.

What to take home

If your holiday budget allows, purchase a bottle of Kevin John Chardonnay by lauded Margaret River winery, Cullen Wines . Nigella Lawson raves about the family-owned, biodynamic label’s orange wine, but we think this one’s even better. Find it at good wine stores, including Petition Wine Bar .

Your walls will treasure a genuine piece of Aboriginal art created in Western Australia, especially when you can be sure the proceeds go back to the artist and their community. Find a reputable, certified dealer such as Japingka Aboriginal Art in Fremantle and do your homework before purchasing.

Local laws and etiquette

  • Be aware that there is no mobile phone or internet service throughout many parts of country WA. Telstra has the widest coverage.
  • When you’re heading out bush, be sure to tell someone where you’re going and bring plenty of water, food and spare fuel – getting stranded or lost in outback Australia is no joke. At dawn and dusk, keep a lookout for wildlife such as kangaroos and emus crossing the road; in the vast landscapes of the Pilbara and the Kimberley, cattle and goats are often unfenced and may wander across the tarmac. If you’re travelling through remote parts or during the north’s wet season, check route conditions with the Department of Main Roads (00 61 138 138).
  • In the north, crocodiles are a very real threat: always obey warning signs and check with locals before swimming.

When not eating flappingly fresh seafood, you’ll find Fleur bar hopping in the city’s transformed heart, wandering between Fremantle’s quirky boutiques and hiking central Perth’s little-known lakes and bush tracks.
