Italy Trip for Teens

Join an unforgettable summer trip, where high school students travel across Italy with a small group of fellow adventurers! With rail pass and maps in hand, this trip allows teens to tour Italy ’s monuments, take in its artistic masterpieces, enjoy that perfect gelato, and discover just how good authentic pizza and pasta really is. This small group travel program allows for a little flexibility and spontaneity along the way, by allowing the teens travel ing to take part in some of the planning alongside their  amazing trip leaders – all within our predetermined itinerary on this Italy adventure travel program!

Please note that participants on some departures of this program join for the end of our longer 28-day France, Switzerland & Italy program.

Flight To Milan, Italy

Fly overnight to Milan. Once you land, your orientation will officially begin with some of our favorite icebreakers and “get to know you” activities.

Cinque Terre, Italy

Part of the Italian Riviera, these five small, classic Italian towns are built into the cliffs and rise from the sea and look much like they did when they were first settled in the 17th century. Enjoy some chill time in these quaint fishing villages of the Cinque Terre. Hike from village to village stopping for amazing coastal views and irresistible pesto (this is where it was born!). Soak up the Italian sun during a relaxing day at the beach, and chill with a night of group activities and bonding overlooking the Mediterranean.

Venice, Italy

The city known for its canals! Explore this "maze" of over 100 islands connected by 150 canals and 400 bridges first by foot, then by gondola. Wander the shops of Venice filled with Venetian masks. Watch a demonstration of the 700-year-old craft of Murano glass blowing. Feed the pigeons in Piazza San Marco. Enjoy the Italian feasts of pizza, pasta, and parmigiana.

Florence, Italy

Ah Florence! Home of the Renaissance, the works of Boticelli, Da Vinci, and Michelangelo. Check out the famous Duomo by Brunelleschi and behold Michelangelo's impressive David at the Accademia. Search the leather markets for the perfect gifts, then put on your apron and attend an authentic Italian cooking class. Savor Florence's greatest treat - classic Italian gelato. Soar above the emerald waters of the Lima River within a secluded canyon while zip lining in Tuscany followed by stand up paddleboarding in this spectacular natural setting.

The Amalfi Coast, Italy Sorrento, Positano & Capri

Soak up the street carnival atmosphere in this cliff-side town overlooking the Bay of Naples. Cruise to the Isle of Capri stopping to hop off and swim in majestic green waters and grottos. Return Flight Home From Rome, Italy

Say farewell to your new friends as you part ways for your return home. The summer might be over, but all the memories you’ve made will last a lifetime!

Your stay at the Hotel Genova or Grand Hotel Savoia are both ideal locations to explore the villages of Cinque Terre. 

Staying at Hotel Nazionale we’ll be situated in the center of Venice just a few minutes from St. Marco Square. All rooms have satellite TV, air conditioning and are furnished in a typical Venetian style.

Enjoy your stay at either the Hotel Cellai , Hotel de la Ville , or the Hotel Corona d'Italia located in the heart of downtown Florence just minutes from the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and famous leather markets.

Sorrento, Italy

You will be staying at either the Hotel Savoia , Hotel Dania or Grand Hotel Flora , located in the heart of Sorrento, a short walking distance to all of the nightlife and a perfect hub for exploring the Island of Capri and the beach of Positano.

Staying at either the Best Western Blu Hotel Roma or The Cross Hotel , you’ll be surrounded by Rome’s famous monuments and landmarks, such as the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, the Villa Borghese gardens and the Trevi Fountain.

Flight To Milan, Italy For participants on this program, we help you coordinate your flight times and greet you upon arrival in Milan, Italy.

Return Flight Home From Rome, Italy For your return from Rome, we offer a chaperoned flight to New York. For travelers from outside the New York area, we can help you arrange transfers at suitable times after the group has cleared customs and immigration; or you may fly home directly from Rome to your home city and our leaders help you to check-in and remain in the airport until flights in designated times have departed.

About ON TOUR This program features separate, age-compatible departure dates, including ON TOUR departures for older teens currently completing 11th or 12th grade. These ON TOUR departures offer more freedom of choice than our other TRAVEL programs by balancing the greater independence that young adults crave with the structure and safety that parents expect. Itineraries include amazing activities and sights for the more mature student, as well as a later curfew. Opportunities to do some safe exploring in smaller groups to find that local cafe or indie boutique also makes this a standout experience for older students.

Meals Breakfasts in Europe are eaten at our hotels and served buffet style with a variety of options. For dinners, either the whole group goes to the same restaurant or we divide into smaller groups of your choosing with our staff. For lunch, you will enjoy eating in smaller groups and choosing from local cafés, bistros, and other restaurants. Are you ready for fresh pasta and pizza in Italy? The food in Europe is terrific, so get set to eat extremely well!

We have satisfied the choosiest of eaters and gladly accommodate most special dietary requests including vegetarian, food allergies, lactose intolerance, celiac disease, and kosher style. We welcome discussing your individual requirements with you and have extensive experience in this area.

Laundry You will only need one week’s worth of clothing as outlined in the packing list that will be sent to you prior to departure. Every week you may drop off your laundry at a local wash and fold service and then pick it up clean, folded and ready to go.

Luggage On this program, we ask that participants pack in a large traveler’s backpack or internal frame backpack which are essential for mobility and convenience of travel. Participants are responsible for carrying their luggage while traveling throughout our destinations, on public transportation (ex: trains, metro) as well as up stairs, along cobblestone streets and for extended distances. Rolling duffel bags are permitted but not recommended as they are difficult to maneuver and transport through European city streets and public spaces.

Your traveling backpack or duffel should be a maximum of 6400 cubic inches or 105 liters, and not longer than 32″. Common acceptable bag sizes are 30”x15”x14” and 32”x15”x12”.

What’s Included Included in your program tuition is all lodging, breakfast and dinner daily, recreation & entertainment listed, airport transfers in designated times, gratuities & taxes.

Not included is transportation to and from the program, lunches, snacks, personal spending money for souvenirs, and laundry. We also make available optional travel insurance that is not included, but highly recommended.

Who are the staff and what are their qualifications?

Our staff are educators, guidance counselors, coaches, college and university students, former camp counselors, residence life coordinators, community volunteers, world travelers, and other leaders with diverse backgrounds. Many are former participants themselves who couldn’t get enough of the Westcoast experience! Learn more about our summer leaders .

What if I need to contact my teen during the program?

Participants may bring their cell phones so parents may call and message their kids directly. You may also contact our Communication Centers which serve as the official link between programs on the road and parents. We are staffed every day during the summer and have somebody on call for after hours emergencies ready to assist you 24/7.

What is the difference between an Active Teen Tour and a Global Adventure program?

Our Active Teen Tours offer larger group sizes (generally 35-48 participants) and travel in deluxe motor coaches. Accommodations include quality hotels and occasional fun college residences.

Global Adventures are smaller group experiences (generally up to 26 participants). Groups travel by private motor coaches and occasional public transportation internationally, and use passenger vans in the USA. The France, Switzerland and Italy itinerary travels exclusively by train and public transportation. While these programs have a slightly bigger focus on adventure travel, we stay in quality hotels and lodges, always ensuring a good night’s rest.

Check out its website for comprehensive travel services information and details on how to get an International Student Identity Card (ISIC), which qualifies students for substantial savings on rail passes, plane tickets, entrance fees, and more. It also provides students with basic health and life insurance and a 24-hour help line. The card is valid for a maximum of 18 months. You can apply for the card online or in person at STA Travel (tel. 800/781-4040 in North America; www.statravel.com ); visit the website to locate offices worldwide. If you're not a student but are under 26, you can get an International Youth Travel Card (IYTC) from the same people, which entitles you to some discounts. Travel CUTS (tel. 800/592-2887; www.travelcuts.com ) offers similar services for both Canadians and U.S. residents. Irish students may prefer to turn to USIT (tel. 01/602-1906; www.usit.ie ), an Ireland-based specialist in student, youth, and independent travel.

Inside the Farm to Table Movement

From the farms, fields, and olive groves to the dinner table, food traditions are the beautiful beating heart of Italian identity. During this student travel program in Italy, get a firsthand look at how inspiring individuals have built careers out of a passion for food. Together with fellow food lovers, immerse yourself in Italian life and the country’s storied food culture. Expand your understanding of sustainable food systems as you sow, harvest, cook, and savor your way through Italy.

This itinerary represents our best projection of the group’s schedule. However, we may implement changes designed to improve the quality of the program.

Upon arrival in Rome, travel by chartered bus to Pulicaro, a beautifully restored, family-run, 18th-century organic farm located on the provincial border of Umbria and Lazio. Your hosts, Marco and Chiara, moved to the Italian countryside from Milan in 2001 and began reviving the farm according to sustainable principles. Today, Pulicaro boasts over 2,000 olive trees, a fruit orchard, free-range chickens and geese, and acres of gardens filled with heirloom tomatoes, onions, garlic, pumpkins, and a dizzying array of other fruits and vegetables.

Participate in hands-on farm rotations, putting the principles of sustainable agriculture into practice as you care for animals, plant, tend, harvest, can, and cook. In the afternoons, take survival Italian lessons from our hosts; learn basic knife skills or restaurant plating techniques; discuss food policy, movements, and trends; or relax under the shade of one of Pulicaro’s many mulberry trees, at nearby Lake Bolsena, or in the piazza of a Tuscan hill town. Experience even more local tastes on day trips to the farms of local producers. Spend some evenings preparing dinner together and learning how to balance flavors and present foods like a professional kitchen staff. , and other evenings checking out restaurants in the cliffside town of Orvieto.

Head north to the unparalleled beauty of Siena to explore the city’s bustling market and restaurant scene. In search of new ingredients, skills, and knowledge, delve into Italian food history, sample dishes in secret neighborhood trattorie, hand-stretch pasta in a cooking class, peruse a farmers’ market in Siena, and visit the Castello di Spannocchia for a behind-the-scenes look at efforts to preserve an ancient line of Tuscan pig. Experience the living history of the Palio horse race through citywide feasts, celebrations, and parades.

Note: The July 9 departure will visit Siena but will not be present for the Palio festival.

Return to Pulicaro, baskets and bags loaded with fresh ingredients, and spend the final days of your trip to Italy honing the menu for and cooking a multi-course cena finale, the final feast. Invite your family, and share and celebrate all you have learned with new Italian friends at this delicious outdoor banquet on the last evening of the program.

Food culture is a defining part of everyday life in Italy, and Italian cuisine is a global point of reference for food lovers in every corner of the world. Small-scale artisanal production, preservation of heirloom varieties, and a true connection with natural cycles are the hallmarks of Italy’s sustainable agriculture community. It is no surprise that the international Slow Food movement began in Rome in 1986, nor that organic and biodynamic farming finds some of its most passionate and ardent practitioners here in the Tuscan and Umbrian hills.

Italian is the national language of Italy. The country is home to as many as 30 regional dialects of the Italian language, though contemporary Italian is most influenced by the Tuscan dialect.

Daytime temperatures during Italy’s summer months range from 80–90°F, while nighttime temperatures average 60–70°F. The weather is typically hot, sunny, and dry.

Italian cuisine is characterized by its accessibility and dramatic regional variation, a product of each region’s climate, history, and tradition. Typical meals include pastas, rice dishes, stews, cheeses, fish, wild meats (such as cinghiale , or wild boar), cured meats (like the popular prosciutto ), soups, and salads. Regional specialties like panforte , ribollita , and white truffles are endemic to Tuscany.

Food & Culture: There are countless careers that touch food systems and foodways, and with its unparalleled food culture, Italy is the perfect place to pursue your passion and explore possible career paths. Perhaps your goal is a future as a food producer or farmer, a chef or restaurateur, a food writer, or a food and farm policymaker; or maybe you want to get a deeper understanding of food systems and sustainability. This program provides hands-on, immersive experiences that encourage thoughtful engagement with food-related issues—sustainable and organic farming practices, small- and large-scale farming, and more—as well as hands-on, applicable culinary skills that you can take home to your own kitchen and community.

This student program in Italy explores the entire Farm-to-Table process, with a good deal of focus placed on the stages that precede cooking. In addition to participating in cooking classes and preparing meals frequently for the group, you should come prepared and excited to engage actively in supervised rotations on a working farm and explore the many non-culinary processes associated with food production. We explore nearly all aspects of Italian cuisine, and ask you to have an open mind and willingness to try new foods (that are within your own dietary guidelines), to respect the culinary traditions we encounter and their practitioners, and to bring your enthusiasm to break a sweat in pursuit of this hands-on experience.

Pursue an independent project and explore an aspect of local culture of particular interest to you—collect recipes from the people you meet, apprentice a gelato-maker, dive deeper into the art and science of baking, or create a food-criticism blog that you can continue after you return home.

Proficiency in Italian is not required. However, if you study Italian, you will have opportunities to practice while communicating with local people. If you don’t speak Italian you will have the opportunity to learn some basic language skills.

This is a physically active summer program. Working in gardens and with animals, exploring the streets of Siena on foot, or enjoying an afternoon hike are all activities in which you might participate during this program. You do not need to be at peak fitness to participate, but it is important that you have a desire to be physically active, and that you are excited about trying all activities.

We stay at historic Italian farms throughout the program, in renovated buildings with 2-4 students in each room.

We begin each day with a simple Italian breakfast at our accommodations. We work together to prepare many of our lunches and dinners at the farm we call home in Lazio, and otherwise find small restaurants or hit the markets to purchase food for a picnic. Italians enjoy their meals and take time to gather with family and friends at the table, eat slowly, and enjoy their company.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: depart from new york (jfk), days 2-3: venice.

Our first stop is Venice – a dreamlike city of bridges and canals unlike any other in the world. You’ll be amazed at the splendor of the Grand Canal lined with crumbling, decadent palaces. We will wander the city’s tangled streets, marveling at the colors and reflections that only Venice can offer. Marvel at the iconic St. Mark’s Basilica in the central square. Visit the classic Venetian Gothic-style Palace of the Doges, which was the seat of the Doge, the supreme authority in the Republic of Venice. This striking structure set along the edge of St Mark’s Square and the Grand Canal is has been converted into a massive internationally renowned museum. Get an insider’s look at the last gondola shop to learn about this centuries-old craft. The Gondola master is one of only five remaining craftsman left producing the iconic Gondolas that thrill tourists daily in the canals.

Check out the Peggy Guggenheim Museum showcasing the eccentric Peggy’s private collection of unique modern art at the former villa where she spent many years amassing a huge array of art from legends like Pollock, Picasso and Dali. Venture to the island of Murano, the center of the ancient glassmaking industry and learn about first hand at an authentic Venetian workshop. Fall in love with the splendors of this Italian city in the lagoon that will surely leave its mark on you.

DAYS 4-6: CINQUE TERRE

Welcome to the Cinque Terre, which is one of Italy’s hidden gems! Often referred to as the Italian Riviera, this region is home to five idyllic fishing villages with pastel colored houses perched on dramatic cliffs that plunge into the crystal-blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea. We stay right in the center of one of the villages (Monterosso) just steps from the beach! We do not stay outside the towns in La Spezia (technically not part of the Cinque Terre). Instead, we are right in the middle of everything and able to walk just a few steps to the beach or charming shops. In Monterosso we have established strong relationships with the locals from some of the service projects we have done there in the past, and you will see you are treated like family during your stay here!

The Cinque Terre is known for its spectacular hiking trails that connect the towns and we will have the opportunity to hike them for ourselves! On the hike we will enjoy spectacular views of the sea and the vineyards that line the cliffs and be inspired by the natural beauty in this region. During our time here we will also sample local specialties like pesto and focaccia. We’ll dine on fresh seafood and relax on the beach in our seaside paradise.

DAYS 7-8: PISA > FLORENCE

Then we’re off to Florence, with first a stop in Pisa to get that iconic photo of the Leaning Tower. Then it’s time to discover Firenze, the city most often referred to as an outdoor museum. Every turn in this beautiful city reveals a new statue, fountain or fresco. In the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, we’ll see Michelangelo’s famous “David,” climb to the top of the Duomo, and visit the Uffizi Museum, which houses the best collection of Italian Renaissance art in the world. Art and culture are not all that are in store for us in Florence, however. We’ll shop in the city’s famous markets and go to an exclusive event at one of the best leather shops in the city. We’ll enjoy the best pizzeria in the city and challenge ourselves to go all the way on TFT’s famous gelato tour!

DAYS 9-10: TUSCANY > MONTALCINO

No trip to Italy is complete without visiting the rolling Tuscan hills. Tuscany, where we will spend our time at a gorgeous 500-year-old estate in the legendary Tuscan countryside. Bike or walk along the grounds, which are still used as a working cattle farm, and take a dip in the pool before enjoying a sunset you’ll never forget. Here too we’ll get a hands-on cooking lesson from expert Italian chefs, and we’ll also take a day trip to Montalcino, one of Italy’s loveliest cities. We’ll stroll the quaint cobblestoned streets of the hill town of Montalcino. Visit its beautiful medieval church and cathedral and check out the grand fortress before heading to the nearby town of San Quirico d’Orcia for some breathtaking views of this famous region.

For those who choose, there will be an optional excursion to a private vineyard just outside the town of Montalcino to experience the stunning Tuscan countryside in real Italian fashion. This day is a TFT favorite! We have an exclusive invitation to a family’s private Tuscan estate. We will receive a hands-on tasty Italian cooking lesson using freshly harvested vegetables straight from their garden! Enjoy a special tour of the winery where they produce award-winning wine and receive an introduction to this important part of Italian culture.

DAYS 11-12: ROME

We’ll arrive in the Eternal City where a long and mighty history awaits us. As the city streets buzz with antiquity around every corner, you’ll be in awe as we transport ourselves thousands of years back in time while exploring the most important monuments and structures. From the Colosseum, where we’ll try to imagine the bloody spectacle of gladiator competition, to the Roman Forum, which once housed the ancient city’s bustling center and main marketplace. There’s no better way to learn about the Roman Empire than with a view of the city from atop the Palatine Hill–the very place where it all began.

We’ll then fast-forward to the Renaissance, crossing the Tiber to Vatican City and marvel at the massive basilica dedicated to St. Peter. We’ll lose ourselves in the Vatican’s extensive collection of artistic masterpieces from the ancient world to the present day, culminating with a look at Michelangelo’s elaborate ceiling frescos in the Sistine Chapel. We’ll stroll down the Tiber and venture slightly off the beaten path to Trastevere, one of Rome’s hippest neighborhoods, to see the local Romans in action and indulge in some of the best food in the city, including fresh homemade pastas and pizza “al taglio.” We’ll shop on the famous Via del Corso, toss a coin over our shoulders into the Trevi Fountain, and hang out on the Spanish Steps enjoying a classic Roman night of simply relaxing in the summer air of a beautiful piazza.

DAYS 13 – 14: SORRENTO

Next stop on this incredible Italian  viaggio : the Amalfi Coast! Sorrento is a beautiful cliffside beach town featuring brightly-colored buildings jumping out against a backdrop of luxurious green mountains rolling into the turquoise sea. We’ll enjoy our first lunch at one of our favorite hidden sandwich shops, run by an Italian nonna who home-makes her own mozzarella cheese and is happy to whip up a fresh caprese salad for you right in front of your eyes. After that, we’ll go and relax on the beach, soak up the sun, and float in the crystal-clear waves! We’ll finish the day with the first of what will be many amazing dinners of homemade Italian cuisine.

DAY 15: POMPEII

We’ll ride the Circumvesuvio–the train that goes around Mount Vesuvius–to Pompeii, where history will come alive at this perfectly preserved archaeological site. Pompeii was a thriving ancient Roman port town that was frozen in time when it was buried under a deep layer of ash and pumice during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Step back in time while exploring these towns and learn about the daily life there before the volcanic devastation. Our expert guides will teach you the historic tales of this beautiful city, and you’ll even get to see the plaster castings of the people who were found there.

DAY 16: POSITANO > AMALFI

It’ll be love at first sight with the sun shining above, sapphire blue sea below, and unbelievable views in front of us as we sail down the Mediterranean marveling at the pastel-painted towns nestled along the coastline. With stops along the way, you’ll have a chance to jump into the crystal clear water, swim among cascading waterfalls and in several secluded bays. When we arrive in Positano, you’ll think you’ve been transported into a postcard as you gaze at the quaint hillside town perched up above. Hop off the boat to explore this picturesque coastal gem and wander the narrow streets surrounded by multicolored buildings, blooming flowers, and sweet-smelling lemons. Visit the iconic church of Santa Maria Assunta with its ornate dome covered entirely in tiles. We’ll also stop in Amalfi, where you’ll be able to enjoy the best shopping in the chic stores that line the streets, from handmade shoes and clothes to an abundance of lemon-themed products.

DAY 17: NAPLES

What better way to spend your day than in the very place that pizza was invented? Indulge in the best in the world, served steaming hot straight out of a wood-fired oven. Once you experience authentic Neapolitan pizza, nothing else will compare! Here in Naples, we’ll follow up our tour of Pompeii at the National Archeological Museum, the richest collection of archeological artifacts in Italy, including the best mosaics and artifacts from the ruins. We will also have a chance to hit some of the shops and wander around the fascinating and folkloristic streets of Naples! Lastly, we will have a tour of “underground Naples” and embark on a fascinating journey in the subsoil of the city. Go back in time and marvel at this unbelievable collection of tunnels that have had many different uses throughout the past 2,000 years, from ancient Roman aqueducts to WWII bomb shelters.

DAY 18: CAPRI

Spend your final day just off the coast exploring the exclusive island of Capri. You can go shopping in the ultra-chic boutiques, take a hike around the craggy coast of the island, and enjoy a scenic chairlift ride up to Mt. Solaro, the island’s highest point for breathtaking views and incredible photo opportunities! Our time in the Amalfi Coast will be complete with a final fancy dinner with gorgeous sunset views to enjoy with all of your new friends!

Who can go on this program? What kind of teen typically goes on this program?

Teens from all over the world join this program! Typically, our participants are culturally curious  individuals who are excited to make new friends, experience something unique, and interested in stepping out of their comfort zones and expanding their horizons.

This program is exclusively for students who are currently in grades 9th through 12th and approximately 14 to 18 years old. Students living outside of the USA are welcome to join!

Where do we stay?

Our hotels are chosen specifically in safe areas and are well suited to facilitating group supervision. We stay in centrally located accommodations, usually within walking distance of the main attractions. We do not use large, impersonal chain hotels on the outskirts of cities; we prefer to select smaller, family-run hotels where we establish personal relationships with the owners.

In Venice, we stay at a hotel located on a beautiful piazza only a short walk from the train station. In the Cinque Terre, we will be staying in a lovely family-run hotel located only steps from the best beach in town. In Florence, we stay in a beautiful hotel a short distance from the Duomo. When in Tuscany we have the pleasure of staying at a beautiful estate in the rolling hills of the countryside. In Rome, we’ll be staying at an elegant hotel near the central Piazza Santa Maria Maggiore, close to both the Colosseum and the main train station. While we’re in Sorrento, we stay at a gorgeous hotel with a rooftop terrace and stunning views.

For safety reasons, we do not publish the names of the accommodations we use. We do not feel it is safe to publish the name of a hotel where a group of teenagers is staying abroad. After registering, participants and parents are given access to our secure parent website where you will be able to see the names of all of the accommodations for the program.

Do most travelers go on their own?

Yes! In fact, over 75% of students who travel with us choose to come independently. This encourages teens to step further outside their comfort zone and make new friends. We believe that one of the most rewarding and exciting elements of travel is the new friendships that form along the way. When we travel by ourselves, we are bound to make new friends from all over the country and even the world. The best part is, you can travel again with your new friends on another TFT program the next summer!

If you are thinking about joining a TFT program by yourself but you are feeling unsure, please let us know! We have plenty of references from solo travelers who had great experiences and would be happy to chat with you about it.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! We ask that if you do come with a friend, you and your friend(s) maintain openness to meeting new people and sharing this special experience with the entire group.

Students love that they are able to explore the best of Italy, from the major cities and small towns to the coast and the countryside. The Ultimate Italy program allows them to discover Italy in all its unique glory, and unearth one of the most lovable cultures in the world.

What is unique about the Ultimate Italy trip?

With over 15 years of experience leading trips in Italy, TFT provides an insider access to this Ultimate Italy program in beautiful country with exclusive accommodation at a Tuscan villa, hands-on learning experience at a gondola workshop in Venice and private boat tours in the Mediterranean.

What is included?

Tuition cost includes ground transportation; accommodation; chaperones and guides; program-related activities and admissions; taxes and tips; all breakfasts and dinners.

Not included in cost (this is not intended to be an exhaustive list) : airfare; lunches; visas and visa application fees; personal and medical expenses; activities and admissions that are not program-related or referenced in the itinerary; beverages other than filtered water at meals; participant expenses that are outside of the program description, such as excess baggage fees and damage to hotels; expenses related to unforeseen circumstances, such as transportation strikes and natural disasters.

How do the optional group flights work?

Upon registration, you will be contacted by our International Logistics Team to discuss the program’s flight details. There is no requirement to take the group flight, but there are several advantages to doing so. The group flight is usually chaperoned by a TFT staff member, and it also offers an opportunity for the students to get to know one another prior to the start of the program. Parents are responsible for coordinating transport to the departure airport – however, the logistics team will send out instructions detailing the exact meeting spot and airport point person. Who leads the program?

Our staff is a cut above the rest! We seek out two main characteristics in our counselors – extensive knowledge of and experience in our destinations, and a passion for working with teens. Our staff’s backgrounds include living abroad and working in summer camps or other educational settings. Team members are proven leaders and role models, who connect easily with others and form genuine friendships with each student – all while bringing each destination to life.

We celebrate diversity! Our staff represents 49 different nationalities, speak a combined total of 21 languages, and visited 142 countries. Additionally, 80% of our staff lived or worked abroad in their lives. With so many unique experiences to share, you are sure to gain a global perspective.

Our average minimum ratios are one staff member to every seven participants. Each program has one Trip Director with several support staff, depending on the group size. Directors must be at least 25 years old within the calendar year and have prior experience working with TFT.

What are the safety qualifications for our staff?

Our staff members undergo a rigorous hiring process. They receive the same background check as school educators, an extensive training process to go over all safety precautions and protocols, and are required to be certified in CPR and First Aid.  We exclusively hire responsible, multi-talented individuals who are safety-minded and are as passionate about teen travel as we are.

What is the average group size?

We pride ourselves on small group sizes to create a more authentic and personalized experience. Our group sizes fall between 13 and 24 students – the perfect size to facilitate new friendships without feeling lost in a crowd! We believe smaller groups eliminate the likelihood of cliques, and allows for a well-rounded, healthy group dynamic.

How does this program connect to other programs?

Our program dates are designed specifically so that participants can opt to combine trips throughout the summer.  When connecting to another program, your counselor will escort you to the airport on the last day of the program and assist you in meeting your next group at your new destination.

What is the food like on this program?

In a word – delicious! At TFT, we believe food should be an integral part of the travel experience and always make an effort to eat at authentic establishments when we can. What better way to immerse yourself in the culture of a place than by sampling the local delicacies, and we encourage students to do so whenever possible! Just as we stay away from Americanized hotel chains, we try to avoid restaurants with menus that cater only to tourists because every good traveler knows the best food is found wherever the locals are eating!

Italian food is all about fresh, simple ingredients. We’ll sample the best of the “three Ps”- pizza, pasta, and panini! Indulging in these Italian specialties for the first time is a life-changing experience, and we will be there to document every minute of it as you fall in love with the fresh mozzarella, warm Italian bread, mouth-watering prosciutto, and homemade pasta. Don’t forget about gelato! After your trip to Italy, no dessert will ever be the same.

Of course, we are always willing and able to accommodate vegetarians, vegans, gluten allergies, and other dietary restrictions.

Do we ever get time to go off on our own?

Our staff and teens are nearly always together, but we do provide the opportunity to break up into smaller groups to allow for flexibility and customization within the itinerary.

We offer free time in defined safe areas – for example, shopping in a market or exploring a museum. During these times, students remain in groups of at least two and are given no more than an hour. Of course, the counselors remain nearby and available. Additionally, a lifeguard-certified counselor supervises the campers any time they are involved in water activities.

Do I need any vaccinations for this program?

We recommend checking with your family doctor regarding vaccinations and medical advice for the destination you are visiting. For more information, please check the World Health Organization’s website . Upon registration, we provide a list of recommended vaccinations that can be discussed further with your doctor. What kind of visa do you need for this trip?

Any US citizen that enters Europe is automatically granted a free 90-day tourist visa.

How to Travel Italy on a Student Budget

If you’re a lover of art, culture, history, and delicious food, it’s safe to assume Italy is at the top of your list for travels.

The thought of planning any trip can be overwhelming, and although a trip to Italy can seem luxurious and out of budget, it doesn’t have to be!

Whether you’re traveling from the United States or from within Europe, we’ve got you covered with the best tips on how to travel to and around Italy on a student budget … so let’s get started!

Your flights and accommodation will most likely make up the bulk of your expenses , so once you have these two big-budget items figured out, budgeting for the rest of your trip will be easy. 

Traveling during the off-season will be your biggest money saver . The off-season is November through March, the shoulder season is April through mid-June and September through October, and the peak season is mid-June through August.

Booking your travels during the off-season will save money not only on air travel but also on accommodation.

Booking a roundtrip flight to and from a major city will save you major cash. Flying into Rome or Milan, for example, will be cheaper than flying into an airport that is smaller or has fewer international inbound and outbound flights daily.

Most major cities also have multiple airports so be careful which airport you choose to fly into, especially if it’s a lot less expensive. If the airport is far from the city, the money you save on your flight may have to go into paying for the cab or train ride from the airport to get into the city or to your hotel.

Try booking your flights a few months in advance or, better yet, look at applications and websites such as Google Flights or Hopper, to see when the best time to book your tickets is! You can save one or multiple searches and get instant notifications on when prices drop or are expected to rise.

If you’re planning on visiting multiple cities – and trust us, you’ll want to – it’s best to take advantage of the train system instead of air travel or renting a car. Car rentals average 40 to 60 EUR a day , and that’s if you’re not traveling during peak season.

Additionally, most rental cars in Italy have a manual transmission so if you don’t know how to drive stick shift… you might want to re-evaluate.

Not only can car rentals get expensive but understanding road rules and foreign road signs can be stressful and dangerous, not to mention the added fees for drivers under the age of 24.

Trains are your best bet! Italy has an extensive state-of-the-art train network with both high-speed and regional train options. Most train stations are central to major cities and can be easily reached by either taxi or public transportation.

As an added bonus, most major companies like Trenitalia and Italo offer discounts for students and individuals under the age of 30 with the proper identification:

• Italo: for travelers between the ages of 14-29, Italo offers up to a 60% discount on tickets through their Italo Young program!
• Trenitalia: for travelers under the age of 30, Trenitalia offers up to 50% off train tickets if you’re a CartaFRECCIA member through their Trenitalia Young Offer program!

Though high-speed trains are cheaper than flights, they can average up to 50 to 70 EUR per ticket, so if you’re looking for an even cheaper option, although slower, Italian regional trains are a great alternative!

Public transportation is the most common and affordable way to get around major cities and towns. If you already have an idea of where you want to go, check to see if they have daily, weekly, or monthly passes available for purchase.

In many places, if passes aren’t available, a ticket for public transport costs 1 to 2.50 EUR for a 90-minute pass , meaning you can easily get around on a budget using the underground metro and busses. You can generally purchase tickets at bus or metro stations or local newsstands known as an edicola . 

Sometimes public transportation can be slow, or even hectic, but not to fret! Taxis are affordable in Italy if you’re traveling within the city , and especially if you’re traveling with friends and can split the cost. Lyft and Uber are only available in Rome and Milan and are limited to UberBlack, so taxi cabs are preferred.

Lastly, if you can walk… do it! Walking around is the best way to get a feel for the city and take in your surroundings. You’d be surprised at the amount of hole-in-the-wall places you’ll stumble onto while walking around.

Although getting in some steps and exploring can be great, do a quick search on the areas you’ll be visiting to make sure it’s safe for you to go for a stroll regardless of if you’re traveling alone or with friends.

Also, consider joining a free walking tour . These tours can be a lot of fun and full of surprises.

Tackling accommodation can be daunting, especially if you’re planning on traveling around and staying in multiple cities, but major travel websites like Expedia and Booking.co m do a great job comparing prices for hotels, hostels, and villas .

Just like taking a stroll, spend some time researching the safest areas to stay in the city. Sometimes the cheapest options mean staying in less desirable areas, so be on the lookout.

Hostels will be your most affordable option , especially if you’re traveling alone and don’t mind sharing a room and a bathroom. You can rent out a single bed in a shared room, save money, and meet fellow travelers all in one place.

Hostels usually have a common area and kitchen that is open to guests, which could also help you save money on food during your trip. Many hostels also host events and get-togethers for their guests so travelers can get to know each other and hang out!

If you’re looking for extra privacy and are willing to spend a little bit more money, you can book a private room in an Airbnb or a hotel.

Private Airbnbs are usually as costly as hotels in Italy, but if you’re looking for Italian family hospitality and a local feel, an Airbnb is the place to be whether you’re booking a private room or the entire place for yourself.

Although hostels and Airbnbs are considered more affordable, hotels don’t have to be super expensive either. Just like flights, the Hopper app helps you figure out when is the best time to book your hotel , so you don’t have to do the research yourself!

If you know what you’re looking for in your accommodation, finding the right budget-friendly place for you will take some time but will make your trip that much more enjoyable!

Once you have your big-ticket items figured out, you can have a better idea about your spending budget for food and activities . If you’re careful of tourist traps, eating your way around Italy on a budget is a piece of cake – yes, pun intended.

Visit the local café (bar) for breakfast. Don’t let the name fool you! Cafés in Italy are actually called bars namely for the bar inside that the barista serves coffee on, grab-and-go style. Sitting down to order a cappuccino and a croissant is one of the most enjoyable and Italian things you could do.

Breakfast options won’t set you back more than 5 EUR , with most places averaging 2 to 3 EUR for coffee and a pastry, and sometimes even a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice.

Try to pack your meals as often as possible. A fun and budget-friendly Italian experience is hitting the local panificio , or bakery, to grab some fresh bread or breakfast items and then visiting the local alimentari, or deli, to get what Italians call affettati or sliced deli meats… and there you have it! A delicious sandwich – or panino – for less than a few euros.

In most alimentari you can also ask them to make a panino for you to take with you for the day. Grocery stores in Italy are also packed with local snacks and foods to try that are both filling and won’t break the bank.

Pick going to a trattoria over an osteria since they’re generally less expensive and “cosier” environments. With websites like Yelp and TripAdvisor, it’s easy to find places in the city that are highly reviewed by locals and that aren’t overpriced.

Eating a delicious meal for 8 to 15 EUR is pretty standard . It’s important to note that a tip does not need to be added to your check like in the United States and is not expected – in fact, in some places it’s even considered rude to add a tip so leaving a few euros behind isn’t necessary.

To save a few more bucks, skip the dessert at the restaurant and look for a gelateria or pasticceria ! Gelato is famous worldwide and costs 1.5 to 5 EUR depending on where you go and what size you order and is worth every single penny.

If you’re not feeling like gelato or ice cream, you can’t go wrong with visiting a pastry shop, known as a Pasticceria . Or go to a local café where you can get phenomenal desserts at a fraction of what you would pay for them at a restaurant.

With the extensive amount of art and history Italy has, even walking around is a cultural experience on its own… and it’s free! Italian cities have history woven into every street and around every corner, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money on experiences.

Many of the churches and basilicas are free to visit and there are plenty of beautiful parks you can stroll through as well.

Check to see if there are discounts available for students, especially if you’re a big fan of art and history and have set your mind to go visit a few museums! Like train tickets, many museums discount tickets for students and some even let students in for free with proper I.D. or documentation.

Learn Italian . Most likely you can get by with speaking English, but learning Italian will open new opportunities. You will be able to talk to the locals in their language, better understand their culture and ways of life, and meet new friends all over Italy.

But don’t skip this important step. Though my family did not need to use our Italy travel insurance during a month-long trek around the world’s biggest boot last year, we slept much easier knowing we were covered in the event of an emergency.

Below, we’ll review how travel insurance for Italy vacations works, how much it costs and how to pick the best policy for your once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Understanding travel insurance for Italy vacation

The best travel insurance for Italian vacations should be comprehensive, covering everything from trip cancellation or delay to lost luggage to medical costs. Traveling to Europe can be expensive, so a travel insurance policy with the right coverages is important to ensure you won’t lose your entire vacation savings should something go wrong.

While a comprehensive travel insurance plan is your best bet when traveling anywhere, some coverages, including travel medical insurance , are especially prudent for travel to Italy.

“From hurting an ankle on Rome’s cobblestone streets to a more serious ski accident in the Italian Alps, purchasing a travel insurance policy with emergency medical benefits is a smart move while overseas,” said Daniel Durazo, director of external communications at Allianz Partners.

Meghan Walch, director of product for InsureMyTrip, points out that the Rome and Milan airports are particularly busy “and therefore vulnerable for flight disruptions.” She said, “Travelers should prepare for an uptick in flight delays and cancellations ,” especially during Italian travel strikes at the airport and on railways.

Travel insurance plans bundle together several types of coverage, which can vary by plan. Below, we’ve broken down the major types of travel insurance coverage you should have when traveling to Italy.

Trip cancellation insurance for an Italy vacation

As soon as you start booking flights, hotels and activities for Italy, you’ll want to consider buying a travel insurance plan that includes trip cancellation insurance . This coverage lets you file a claim for reimbursement when you have to cancel your upcoming trip for a covered reason, such as injury, illness, a death in the family, natural disasters or terrorist activities.

In this case, you can file a claim for any nonrefundable expense you’ve prepaid ahead of your trip. Given how far out families often plan for Italy vacations — and how expensive they can be — this is a helpful coverage to include in your policy.

Trip delay insurance for Italy trips

Your vacation may not be canceled, but a missed connection, flight delay or even canceled flight could mean your trip doesn’t get off on the best foot. When you have trip delay insurance in your travel insurance plan, you can get help with covered meals, hotels and transportation if you get stranded somewhere after a delayed or canceled flight.

This is good coverage to have, as direct flights into Italy are expensive. Such coverage will be helpful if you have trouble at your departure airport or any airports in between you and your destination.

Trip interruptions on an Italy vacation

You’ve been plotting your vacation to Italy for months or maybe even years. Perhaps you have a spreadsheet with your full itinerary, or you log onto Facebook every day to get tips from your favorite travel groups. There’s no way anything could go wrong, is there?

Even when we’re far across the Atlantic, living out our dream vacation, life goes on. If you need to end your trip early and come home for a family emergency or because you got sick during your vacation, trip interruption insurance will help you recover any prepaid portions of the trip that you didn’t yet get to experience.

While my husband and I didn’t have to use trip interruption insurance during our Italy vacation, it came in handy years ago during a trip to Maine when our dog back home became terminally ill.

Baggage insurance for Italy trips

You might think of baggage insurance as simply coverage for if the airline loses your luggage during travel. That’s one important aspect of it — though I recommend trying to limit yourself to a carry-on for European travel ; it makes taking the train so much easier. But there’s another important component of baggage insurance that’s particularly important in Italy.

Baggage insurance covers lost, damaged and stolen personal items. Though this type of insurance is called “baggage insurance,” it extends to any items you bring with you, whether or not they’re in your luggage, backpack or purse at the time of the incident.

Why is this important in Italy? Last year, an Italian woman went viral on TikTok for calling out pickpockets, because the country has a widespread problem with them. Thieves often steal wallets, purses and jewelry in crowded tourist areas, but it’s also common for tourists to return to their rental car and discover their luggage has been stolen.

Trains are another concern; if you can’t keep your bags with you where you’re sitting, there’s a chance someone could get off the train with your bag before you even know it’s gone. And if you’re touring multiple Italian cities and regions, it’s easy enough to forget something in a hotel or Airbnb.

Having baggage insurance won’t keep this from happening (safe, smart, vigilant traveling will ), but it can help you recoup the cost of the items lost, stolen or damaged. Just make sure to file a report with the Italian police. You’ll need this when filing your insurance claim.

 Expert tip: Baggage insurance is considered secondary coverage, so if you experience a theft while traveling, you may need to file a claim with your homeowners insurance or renters insurance before you can turn to your travel insurance for help. Likewise, if an airline loses your bag, you’ll first need to file a claim with the airline for reimbursement.

Travel medical insurance for Italy trips

If you have health insurance , it’s easy to assume you’re always covered. That’s often not the case when you leave the country. Check your health insurance policy before taking a gamble and leaving the country uninsured.

“One of the biggest reasons to buy travel insurance is in case of a medical emergency,” said Durazo. “If you or a family member on the policy end up in a situation that requires emergency medical care, you may find that your domestic health care plan isn’t accepted and you have to pay on the spot, especially if you’re being treated overseas, where it’s common to have to pay out of pocket for services before leaving the hospital. That’s why choosing a travel insurance policy with appropriate medical benefits is an important consideration.”

“When it comes to travel medical coverage limits, travelers will likely find coverage amounts starting around $50,000 and go up from there,” said Jonathan Nichols, vice president of underwriting for WorldTrips.

Because treatment can be more challenging and expensive in remote locations and on cruises, it may be prudent to get at least $100,000 of coverage if you’ll be hiking in the Italian Dolomites or taking a Mediterranean cruise. The best cruise travel insurance plans should provide ample medical coverage.

Expert tip: Look for emergency medical benefits with primary coverage . If your plan only has secondary medical coverage, you’ll have to file a claim with your health insurance (even if you know it will be denied), before you can file a travel insurance claim.

Medical evacuation for serious medical issues 

My husband and I spent two full days hiking in the Dolomites during our trip to Italy — and saw just as many helicopter evacuations from the top of a mountain. But it’s not just hikers (and skiers) who risk needing evacuation. At any point during your travels, you may need to be transported to a medical facility by some type of ambulance or helicopter, and it can be extremely expensive.

“Look for at least $100,000 in emergency medical evacuation benefits,” said Nichols. “Without proper coverage, the out-of-pocket expense for emergency transportation during a health-related crisis can easily run thousands of dollars.”

Travel insurance upgrades for trips to Italy

You can enhance your Italy travel insurance with a number of upgrades, including:

• “Cancel for any reason” coverage: Trip cancellation coverage is helpful if you need to cancel for a reason listed in your policy, like getting sick, needing to attend a funeral or not being able to travel because of a natural disaster. However, you won’t get reimbursed if you simply cancel because you forgot to request off at work or your pet sitter falls through. That’s where “cancel for any reason” (CFAR) coverage comes in. With this upgrade, you can get reimbursed (usually 50% or 75%) of your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses as long as you cancel at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure time. The best “cancel for any reason” coverage is expensive but may be worth the cost if your plans aren’t fully set in stone. 
• “Interruption for any reason” coverage: Similar to CFAR, “interruption for any reason” typically lets you recoup up to 75% of nonrefundable trip expenses if you have to change or end your itinerary during the trip. This upgrade is not available with all plans. 
• Car rental insurance: If you want to see some of Italy’s countryside or mountainous areas, you may need to rent a car. Even the best car insurance policies typically don’t extend to European roads. You can get car rental insurance directly through the rental agency, but you may also be able to get it as part of your comprehensive travel insurance plan.
• Winter sports liability insurance: If you plan to ski in the Italian Alps during your trip, Italy requires that you have winter sports liability insurance. You’ll typically need to buy this directly from a ski resort in Italy. It should cost about 3€ a day.

• Protect your belongings: We wore money belts under our shirts for the duration of our trip to Italy. We kept our passports, credit cards and cash there, so we never had to worry about them being stolen. We also packed light so we could always keep our luggage with us when traveling by train.
• Plan ahead: Italians are famously laid-back, and it’s a good idea to embrace that way of life when in Rome (or Florence, or Venice, or …). Even so, you’ll need to do a lot of planning. Research how trains and buses work in the cities you’re visiting, buy tour tickets before they sell out and secure lodging and plane tickets far enough in advance.
• Learn the language: We got by with a limited vocabulary, a few key phrases and Google Translate. In most popular parts of Italy, the locals, especially in the service industry, will speak some English — but speaking their language can go a long way.
• Get off the beaten path: Italy’s big three (Rome, Venice and Florence) are lovely, and there’s so much to see. But the country has a wealth of things to experience outside these three cities. Even when you’re in the bigger tourist spots, walk farther to find yet-to-be-discovered restaurants, museums and architecture.
• Wear comfortable shoes: You’re going to be walking a lot !

Biggest ever Mandarin Excellence Programme trip sees 1,200 pupils travel to China

A record-breaking number of students from across England are preparing to embark on the most ambitious international school trip of its kind, as part of the UCL-led Mandarin Excellence Programme (MEP).

Nearly 1,200 pupils and 157 teachers from 61 schools are jetting off to China in July for a 10-day trip to improve their Mandarin language skills and cultural awareness.

The MEP is a flagship initiative which has helped more than 11,000 young learners in England on the path to fluency in Mandarin since its launch eight years ago.

It is delivered by IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society on behalf of the Department for Education (DfE) in partnership with the British Council and with the support of the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC).

This is the first major trip to take place since the Covid-19 pandemic, following a pilot visit involving 132 students last year.

The tour will take students to cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Xi’an, Chengdu, Kunming, Shenyang, Dalian, Hangzhou, Shenyang and Guangzhou.

Katharine Carruthers (IOE, UCL’s Faculty of Education and Society), MEP Strategic Director, said: “The Mandarin Excellence Programme study visit is a fabulous opportunity for students to experience China in person and advance their language skills.

“This is an unrivalled opportunity which rewards Year 9 MEP students who have been undertaking intensive Mandarin language study in school for the past three years, many of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“The students will benefit from an unforgettable experience as part of their journey to becoming the next generation of fluent Mandarin speakers in the UK.”

The Mandarin-learners will embark on the adventure in different travel groups. They will engage in an extensive cultural and language-learning programme, connecting with pupils in Chinese schools throughout the experience.

Mandarin is the most widely spoken native language globally and is considered a highly valuable skill for young people in the UK to learn. According to British Council research*, Mandarin ranks as the second most important foreign language for the UK's global influence.

Tom Dearing, the British Council’s Head of UK Schools, said: “This year more students than ever before will have an unparalleled opportunity to visit China and immerse themselves in this vibrant and dynamic culture, practising their Mandarin skills as well as their intercultural skills.

“This unique experience will stay with them for life and will motivate them to continue their studies, as well as building lasting friendships between people in the UK and China.”  

Ahead of the visit, Tilly, a Year 9 student from Finham Park School in Coventry, said: “It’s a huge trip. It’s taken a while to organise and we’ve had lots of meetings about it, I’m really excited. I’m a bit nervous for being away from home but I think that I’ll get over that quickly. I think it will massively affect my learning in such positive ways.”

Her classmate, Vincent, added: “I don’t think I would have done this without the Mandarin Excellence Programme, it’s made me learn a lot more about China than I would have if I hadn’t taken it. It’s a very surreal experience knowing that you’re going to be on the other side of the planet. It’s a great, great opportunity.”

In 2023, UCL was also selected by DfE to lead a new nationwide Language Hubs programme, providing thousands of students across England with high quality language teaching via a centre of excellence.

Dolomites hike an invigorating way to see splendor of Alps in Italy

The Swiss get all the credit for the Alps, which is a shame, because the Italian Alps are ridiculously pretty.

They’re particularly spectacular in the Dolomites, a range of 18 peaks in the northeast of Italy that UNESCO says “are widely regarded as being among the most attractive mountain landscapes in the world.”

That seemed like reason enough to visit, so one sunny Sunday in May I set off on the 90-minute drive from Vicenza to Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park.

The park boasts an abundance of plant and animal life in addition to its magnificent views. I headed to Lake Mis, which has parking and a restaurant, and is a jumping-off point for several hikes. If you want to spend the night, you can camp or rent a cabin.

My goal was to hike the Lake Mis-Val Falcina trail, a moderately challenging loop of roughly 2.5 miles. It starts steep, gaining about 2,000 feet of elevation in the first stretch.

The good news is that afterward, you get to go mostly downhill. Start counterclockwise to do the uphill section first. The trail is very well-marked and maintained, but the downhill stretch is paved with small rocks, which can slip and require steady footing.

I can imagine it would be particularly treacherous after a rain, which we’ve had a lot of in northern Italy lately. Visit on a sunny, dry day if possible.

The uphill section at the beginning has several lookout points with gorgeous views over Lake Mis. Halfway through the hike, there’s a waterfall, where I was grateful to refill my water bottle.

You’ll have to cross two creeks, and the difficulty will depend on the time of year. In a historically rainy May, there was quite a bit of water. I jumped from boulder to boulder across the first creek but had to simply wade through the second.

It was a warm day, so I was happy for the cool-down, but I wouldn’t suggest doing this hike much earlier in the spring because it could be cold with higher water. The park website recommends the hike between March and November.

On the other hand, you don’t want to get too hot. Most of the hike is shaded and the elevation helps offset the heat, but make sure to bring a water bottle.

The trail winds from lake vistas to waterfall to secluded pine forest to meadows. Towering over the Val Falcina is Mt. Pizzocco, which is more than 7,000 feet tall.

Within the two hours it takes to complete the hike, you cross four distinct geographies, ending with a lookout over a bridge and Lake Mis.

I couldn’t stop exclaiming about how pretty it all was and how I can’t wait to come back to try the other trails. The loop spits you out steps from the park’s small restaurant, where a cold beer or lemonade awaits. There’s also ice cream, wine, pizza and burgers. Or bring your own picnic and join the crowds lounging on the grass.

Perhaps the best part of the national park was its remarkable quiet, even on what the restaurant staff told me was a busy day.

Overtourism has been a hot topic in Italy lately, with Venice implementing a day tax and other cities struggling to accommodate influxes of summer tourists. Nearby, Lake Como is considering a tourism fee, as is Lauterbrunnen in the Swiss Alps.

But at least for now, Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park hasn’t caught the world’s attention. That makes this the perfect summer to escape the crowds in the rest of Italy and head into the mountains.

ACC Culinary Arts students take their education to Italy!

Buongiorno dall’italia! A group of Austin Community College District students are taking their studies abroad. 

They are taking a 10-day Ancient Grains course with Alba Accademia Alberghiera. The students–– ranging in age from 18 to 73–– are learning more about sweet and savory dishes, like cake, pastry, pasta, and pizza. The program runs from June 24 to July 5.
