What you'll do

Upon arrival of your cruise ship our guide will await with a SHOREXC sign. We will depart from the port of Portland together with our guide headed to Stonehenge, north of Salisbury, England. The tour will take us approximately two hours.

Upon arrival at Stonehenge, we will feel like we have traveled back in time.

Isolated on an immense open and flat space, this wonder of the world is a spiritual place and a source of inspiration for all who visit it.

This unique megalithic monument was built in several stages. The first monument was built about 5000 years ago and the stone circle around it was built in the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age. Although it is not yet known with certainty who was responsible for placing these stones, there are those who attribute it to the druids, wizards and witches in the collective imagination who were actually philosophers and theologians with great prestige in ancient Gaul.

There are many theories about its purpose, a coronation place for Danish kings, a druid temple, an astronomical place to predict solar eclipses, a place where ancestors were worshiped or even a cult center for healing.

Today, the most widely accepted interpretation of Stonehenge is a prehistoric temple lined in such way to show the sunrise and sunset. Hence it has become a custom for people to gather here on every summer mornings solstice to watch the sunrise.

Our guide will take you around this enigmatic circle full of history declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and will tell you everything we know about it as you examine it closely.

After finishing the excursion, we will resume our journey back to the port of Portland for the farewell.

Experts claim breakthrough in ancient 4000-Year-Old Stonehenge tool kit puzzle

' src=

Archaeologists say a 4,000-year-old tool kit found among the grave of a Bronze Age spiritual leader was used for working with gold.

  • A Bronze Age burial site in Wiltshire contained the skeletons of two people
  • One was buried with stone and metal artefacts indicating they were a shaman
  • Scientists have analysed these and found traces of gold on the surface
  • This suggests the shaman was also a skilled goldsmith and metalworker

The stone tool kit was found near Stonehenge more than two centuries ago but its use until now has been unknown.

Archaeologists from the University of Leicester detected traces of gold on their surface, indicating they were once used as hammers or anvils for metalworking. Pictured: Gold traces on stone used for polishing and smoothing

Researchers at the University of Leicester have re-examined grave goods discovered within the burial and found they were gold-working tools.

Has the mystery of Stonehenge finally been solved? A new study suggests that Stonehenge once served as a solar calendar.

  • Researchers argues that the design of Stonehenge was one big solar calendar
  • The entire site was the physical representation of one month, lasting 30 days
  • One theory is Stonehenge served as an ancient calendar, although others exist

Research showed the stones were added about 2500BC and remained in the same formation, indicating they worked as a single unit such as a calendar. Join us on a Stonehenge tour and hear all the latest theories

stonehenge tours from portland

Professor Timothy Darvill said the Wiltshire stone circle’s layout served as a physical representation of the year.

He said the research indicated “the site was a calendar based on a tropical solar year of 365.25 days”.

Although the origins of the site remain a mystery, in a paper published in the journal Antiquity, Prof Darvill deduced that the stones are displayed to represent a solar year of 365.25 days and were once used to help people keep track of time.

His analysis also includes new finds about the site’s history, along with analysis of other ancient calendar systems.

The prehistorian, who works at Bournemouth University, said that “the clear solstitial alignment of Stonehenge has prompted people to suggest that the site included some kind of calendar since the antiquarian William Stukeley.

“Now, discoveries brought the issue into sharper focus and indicate the site was a calendar based on a tropical solar year of 365.25 days.”

The significance of the layout is highlighted during the Winter and Summer solstices, when the sun is framed by the same stones every time.

The solstitial alignment helps to calibrate the calendar and any errors would be easily detectable as the sun would be in the wrong place during the biannual event.

Professor Darvill said: “The proposed calendar works in a very straightforward way. Each of the 30 stones in the sarsen circle represents a day within a month, itself divided into three weeks each of 10 days.”

The solar calendar was developed in eastern Mediterranean countries after 3000BC and adopted in Egypt as the Civil Calendar around 2700BC. It was widely used around 2600BC, at the start of the Old Kingdom.

This information raises the possibility that the calendar that Stonehenge tracks may be influenced by other cultures.  SOURCE

The World of Stonehenge. A must-see exhibition featuring stunning treasures from the British Neolithic. Visit the exhibition and Stonehenge on the same day.

British museum unveils treasures at centre of new exhibition on neolithic period.

The forthcoming exhibition at the  British Museum  will celebrate the iconic megalithic monument Stonehenge in what the institution promises to be a “landmark show.” It can’t include Stonehenge, of course, but our private guided Stonehenge tours can depart from the museum and take you directly to the monument itself.

The World of Stonehenge  is at the British Museum, London, from 17th February to 17th July 2022 and will surprisingly be the first time ever that the legendary site has served as the subject of a major event at the massive and prestigious museum. In keeping with that momentous occasion, curators putting the exhibition together have reportedly amassed a staggering array of artifacts, including approximately 250 pieces that have been loaned to the event from institutions throughout Europe and the UK.

A key part of the collection, this 4,000-year-old Bronze Age timber structure has been nicknamed the Stonehenge of the Sea after it re-emerged on a Norfolk beach in 1998. It consists of a large upturned tree stump surrounded by 54 wooden posts. The oak posts, some up to 3m tall and form a 6.6m-diameter circle around the upturned oak, creating a giant tree-like spectacle. A narrow entranceway was built aligning to the rising midsummer sun and it is speculated the monument was used for ritual purposes.

The aim is to set the stone monument – built 4,500 years ago, and one of the most recognisable sights in Europe – into the context of an era during which there was huge social and technological change.

This is a fiercely emotional exhibition, full of love for the people of the distant past. It even wants us to learn from them. The early agriculturalists who built the henges were communal, sharing feasts at a camp called  Durrington Walls  near Stonehenge. There are even remains from a party when early farmers and the last hunter-gatherers ate together, the hunters cooking venison they caught, the farmers serving beef from their herd. Many of our guided tours include Durrington Walls and Woodhenge as part of the package.

Points of Interest

Description.

Be sure to read the Special Notes further down this page for important requirements and restriction.

What you will visit: Stonehenge As compelling today as it was to the people who built the first phase over 5,000 years ago, the mythical stones, about 24-feet tall, have captivated the imagination through the ages. An encircling pathway around the monoliths offers stunning views. At the visitors center you will find more information and informative displays. Salisbury Salisbury, nicknamed 'the city in the countryside,' is a lively cathedral city built around its 13th-century Gothic-style cathedral. The cathedral spire is a sight to behold, soaring 400 feet into the sky and dominating the landscape for miles around. The cathedral itself is home to one of only four original Magna Carta, which dates back to 1215 AD and set out the constitution for the country. A walk around the Cathedral Close is an opportunity to observe the quaint black-and-white, half-timbered houses that add charm to this unique location. What you will see along the way: The drive from Portland to Stonehenge is approximately two hours each way. Along the way you'll enjoy gazing out the window at views of Portland Harbor then on through the rolling hills of Dorset. The harbor, located at the southernmost part of the coast, was used for over 500 years by the British Royal Navy. Breakwater construction was performed between 1848 and 1905, creating one of the largest man-made harbors in the world, now a popular spot for tourism and sailing events. Lunch: While in Salisbury, enjoy a tasty lunch or tea on your own at one of the many pubs or cafés before heading back to port. Shopping: Free time is provided to explore the historic town of Salisbury and its array of charming shops.

Special Notes:

stonehenge tours from portland

Duration 2 hrs

Browse a collection of armored vehicles dating to World War I that clearly showcases the significance of tanks in combat over the past century. The British invented the tank in 1915 and following the Great War out-of-service tanks were stored at a military camp in Bovington. It wasn’t until the end of World War II that the Tank Museum officially opened there. Today, it houses a multitude of tanks from all over the world, including Little Willie, a prototype designed to cross the trenches that marked the battlefields of World War I. You can expect to see refurnished tanks from every decade and global conflict such as the Allies’ all-purpose Sherman and the workhorse German Panzer from World War II. Another highlight is the Centurion, an armored vehicle that was such a quintessential tank that it was used in the Iraq war of 2003, nearly six decades after it was introduced.

• See a remarkable collection of restored armored vehicles in the Tank Museum. • Discover how tank design has evolved since the first tank was used in World War I. • Learn how tanks have shaped world history with their dominance on the battlefield. • Hear accounts of soldiers that have operated tanks and faced them in combat.

Enjoy an introductory look at Portland, the wild and naturally beautiful isle that marks the southernmost end of Dorset County’s fossil-rich Jurassic Coast. Thanks to the isle’s unique geology, creamy limestone created in the Jurassic Period has long been quarried there for buildings such as Buckingham Palace and St. Paul’s Cathedral in London and the United Nations headquarters in New York City. You will see that revered Portland stone up close at the Olympic Rings sculpture, which commemorates the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London and the sailing events held in Portland. At the very tip of the isle, you will find the Portland Bill lighthouse, which opened in 1906. During free time there, you might browse the visitor center and climb the 150 or so steps to the top of the beacon. The views from there are spectacle. Later, you will pass St. George’s Church, an 18th-century landmark built with Portland stone.

• Settle in for a panoramic drive around the wild and wonderful isle of Portland. • Snap photos of the Olympics Rings statue created to honor the 2012 Summer Olympics. • Spend free time exploring the Portland Bill lighthouse at the isle’s rocky southern tip. • See St. George’s Church, which was built in the 18th century with Portland limestone.

Explore the intriguing site of Stonehenge, one of the most intriguing and ancient sites in England. Situated on a vast plain, the site is truly impressive - shrouded in magic and mystery.

Many believe this sacred site emanates a special atmosphere. Radiocarbon dating reveals this incredible monument was built around 5,000 years ago, during the Neolithic period. The Roman City of Bath

Magnificent Roman remains, Georgian architecture, a spring water spa and first-class shopping wait your discovery. The Romans got it right when they built this gem of a city, and you’ll understand why during your visit to Bath.

A 2-hour scenic drive takes you to there. A stroll through Bath is like visiting an open-air museum. Admire the charming Pulteney Bridge, built 1769-74, the only bridge in England with shops on both sides and which features three arches and a central Venetian window. Don’t miss the sweeping Royal Crescent, perhaps one of the most beautiful streets in England! The Romans transformed Bath into England’s first spa resort and it was revived as a chic spa town in the XVIII century.

For those who prefer to spend a relaxing time in tune with nature, this combination of swannery and gardens is perfect for you. Abbotsbury Swannery is the only place in the world where you are able to walk through the heart of a colony of nesting Mute Swans. The Swannery was established by Benedictine Monks who built a monastery at Abbotsbury and farmed swans to produce food for their lavish banquets. St. Peter's monastery was destroyed in 1539, but some of the ruins are still visible around St. Nicholas' Church in the village. From mid-May to late June, hundreds of fluffy cygnets hatch from eggs in nests on or near the pathways.

Visit Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, established in 1765 by the first Countess of Ilchester as a kitchen garden for her nearby castle. The gardens have been developed since then into a magnificent 20 acres filled with rare and exotic plants from all over the world. Many of these plants were first introductions to this country, discovered by the plant hunting descendants of the countess. The garden is now a mixture of formal and informal, with charming walled garden walks and spectacular woodland valley views. It is world famous for its Camellia Groves and Magnolias, noted for its Rhododendron and Hydrangea collections.

English Countryside and Corfe Castle

Duration 5 hrs

One of Britain’s most iconic castles and the charming little village of Corfe are the highlights of this half day tour. Enjoy a scenic drive through the delightful countryside of Dorset County to the village of Corfe. Nearly all periods of history are celebrated in and around the village, which is unequalled in the UK.

Visit the ruins of Corfe Castle - the structure has been an important stronghold since before the time of William the Conqueror and was a royal castle during the medieval period. The dramatic ruins stand on a natural hill guarding the principal route through the Purbeck hills where marble was once quarried. Discover 1,000 years of history as a royal palace and fortress. With fallen walls and secret places, there are tales of treachery and treason around every corner.

After visiting the castle you’ll have time at leisure to explore the lovely little village. You’ll find small shops and pubs around the square. Much of the present day village was built in the 1700's to a consistently high standard of craftsmanship and has been used as the backdrop for several historical films.

I waited too long to book tour from Portland to Stonehenge on NCL for later this month. Does anyone know of any company that does tours from there? I can't seem to find any (all from London or Southampton). If I can't find a tour , what are things to do in Portland? All tours are sold out from the ship

I have no experience of these companies but they get good ratings on Tripadvisor.

You won't find a coach tour to Stonehenge, certainly not one which fits a cruiser's hours.

And I feel you're going to struggle to find a local car or van tour at short notice, but do try those mentioned by Bob.

You could also scroll thro your cruise rollcall to see if anyone is seeking sharers for a tour.

Lots of places within easy day-trip travelling distance of Portland

- west to Abbotsbury Swannery, the Jurassic coast & West Bay / Bridport ,

- north to the market town of Dorchester & Maiden "Castle" (not a stone castle, but a much earlier defensive earthworks), the Rude man of Cerne Abbas , and the castles of Sherborne  (Sherborne old castle is very limited remains of a 12thC castle, the other is more a "stately home" than a true castle,)

- or east to Corfe Castle  & Lulworth Cove & Durdle Door . Also east to the huge Bovington Tank Museum and nearby Monkey World / ape sanctuary .

But you'd find it difficult & expensive to fix up a tour on-the-fly, and the nearest car rental agencies are about 5 miles away. Added to that, Portland is a secure port, no taxis at the port, exit and enter the port only on ship's excursion coaches or shuttlebus.

If you can't fix anything up, the ship offers a (payable) shuttle service to the nearby Victorian seaside resort of Weymouth for a lazy day.

Or to the D-Day museum just a few yards from the port gate, or to Portland Castle, a ten-minute walk from the port gate - both are quite small, interesting but not worth a full day.

Some recent threads which include suggestions for Portland

We used Dorset and Beyond for Stonehenge they were excellent, picked up 8 of us up directly from Ship, lots of additional stops. Google them and you will find them. Enjoy
