Discover the best things to do in Heraklion in Crete, and start planning an unforgettable trip. This Heraklion travel guide shows you how to visit Knossos, walk along Venetian castle walls, where to try the local food and more!

A guide to the best things to see in Heraklion, Crete.

What to do in Heraklion

Heraklion is the largest city on the Greek island of Crete , and an entry point for most visitors to the island.

With a busy ferry port connecting Heraklion with other parts of Greece, and an international airport, people arrive from all over the world on a daily basis to take their vacations in Crete.

Whether you plan to base yourself in Heraklion for your entire vacation, or just want to spend a night or two before moving on to a road trip around Crete , there's plenty to see and do.

Things to see in Heraklion in a day or two

The island of Crete has a lot to offer, and so it can be tempting to skip over sightseeing in Heraklion itself. This is a shame, as there's lots of interesting things to discover when you visit Heraklion town.

Recommended sites and places to see in Heraklion include the Minoan Palace of Knossos, Koules Fortress, Morosini Fountain, the Archaeological Museum, and the Natural History Museum of Crete.

dave and vanessa at koules fortress heraklion

I've visited Heraklion about half a dozen times now, and recommend spending at least a day in Heraklion in order to see the main attractions. Two days would be perfect in order to see all the important Heraklion sights and discover a few curiosities along the way.

Heraklion city has a fascinating history stretching back thousands of years. While it can get busy, especially in the summer months when there’s cruise ship passengers in addition to regular holidaymakers, Heraklion is the ideal place to begin or end your Crete adventure.

1. Knossos Archaeological Site

The  Palace of Knossos  is the most famous archaeological site in Crete. If you're interested in Ancient Greek mythology then this impressive structure should definitely be on your sightseeing itinerary for Heraklion.

Some tips and advice so you can plan the perfect trip to visit Knossos in Crete

Legend says that the magnificent Minoan palace of Knossos was built by King Minos. Many people believe that Knossos palace is the one mentioned in the myth of the Minotaur. Some people even think that the palace is the mythical labyrinth itself!

Knossos is a few kilometers from Heraklion city centre, but easily reached by public transport or the Hop On Hop Off bus . There's also parking there if you have decided to rent a car in Heraklion .

The archaeological site is reasonably well sign-posted, so you don't need a guide if you prefer to wander around Knossos at your own pace. There's plenty of guided tours available though which do add a lot of extra context to your visit. A good example is this guided walking tour of Knossos .

Dave's Notes About Knossos

Even disregarding the perhaps ‘creative' reconstruction of this ancient city, it must have been one of the most impressive buildings in Minoan Crete. Not that we know an awful lot about the Minoans themselves.

Minoan history, who they were, what language they spoke, and what happened to them is something of a mystery. In fact, we don't really know what they called themselves – It's only us that refer to them as Minoans!

What we do know, is they were one of the most powerful and influential bronze age cultures, and had established trade routes throughout the Mediterranean Sea.

Then, all of a sudden, the Minoan civilisation collapsed. The reason is unclear, with many suggesting natural disasters such as earthquakes. The Mycenaeans took over for a bit, and then the memory of the civilisation slipped into myth and legend until Knossos was discovered in 1878.

Today, the site of Knossos in Crete is a controversial one. This is due to some reconstruction efforts which may have done more harm than good.

No visit to Heraklion would be complete without seeing the Palace of Knossos and you should include it in your Heraklion sightseeing itinerary.

2. Heraklion Archaeological Museum

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is one of the most important museums in Greece, if not Europe. It houses many of the artefacts found at Knossos and other Minoan sites in Crete including this famous and undecipherable clay Phaistos disc shown below.

The Phaistos Disc in the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion, Crete.

If you decide to visit Knossos without a guide, I would suggest it's a great idea to visit the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion first. This way, you will get a better understanding of the civilisation and Crete's history.

Containing exhibits such as fertility Goddesses, symbolical axe heads, and colourful vases, one of the most curious pieces from the ancient sites of Crete displayed in the museum, is the  Phaistos Disc .

This circular object was found at the archaeological site of Phaistos, home of another Minoan palace. The disc appears to be covered in writing, which remains undecipherable to this day. Perhaps if we ever do work out what it says, we will learn more about life in Minoan times!

Opening hours of the museum may vary depending on season. During the summer months, the archaeological museum is open from 08.00 – 20.00.

Dave's Note: You'll want to put aside 2 or 3 hours to make the most of your time in the Heraklion Archaeological Museum.

3. Koules Fortress (Rocca a Mare)

Koules is a Venetian fortress, of a type known as ‘a castle of the sea'. Built in the 16th century at the entrance to the old port, this impressive fortress formed part of the defensive network at Heraklion.

Koules Fortress (Rocca a Mare) Heraklion, Crete

Leaving Knossos to one side, Koules Fortress is perhaps the most obvious landmark of Heraklion.

Today, the Koules fortress has been restored and opened to the public. Inside, the castle is laid out over two floors. These consist of various display rooms, and the roof area with surrounding walls.

Climbing to the top, you will have some of the best views out over Heraklion including over to the ferry port. It's one of the top attractions in the city, and a great photo spot.

Dave's Note: It's closed on Tuesdays!

4. Take a scenic walk around Heraklion Old Town

One of the best things to do in Heraklion, is simply to stroll around the historic Old Town. It's an easily walkable town, and there's many places to be discovered.

map of places to visit in heraklion

The pedestrian streets inside the old city section of Heraklion are perfect for aimless wanderings. With boutique shops, local stores, and interesting architecture there's no better place to give your legs some exercise.

walking around heraklion

There's also plenty of places to eat and drink in case you start to feel the heat, which will be quite strong if visiting Heraklion town in the summer!

Surrounding the old town are the Venetian city walls. These too are worth accessing, as once at the top, you have amazing views down over the city and out onto the port.

walls of heraklion city crete

One of the points of interest you may come across when walking the walls, is the tombstone of Nikos Kazantzakis. He was perhaps the most influential writer in Crete and even Greece, most famous for Zorba the Greek.

Dave's Note: Heraklion is best explored at a leisurely pace. If you're short on time though, consider taking this cool eco-bike tour (you don't need to be a cyclist for this one!).

Within the historic centre of Heraklion, you'll come across a few places of interest:

5. Morosini Fountain / Lion's Square

If you're looking for a photo opportunity as you wander around the city, you'll stumble across the Lion's Square sooner or later. This is where you'll find the Fontana Morosini, an ornate Venetian fountain with four lions with water gushing from their mouths.

This fountain and square could be considered the heart of the historic Old Town of Heraklion, and could be a good place from which to get your bearings, or meet up with people.

Lion's Square in Heraklion in Crete

The Fontana Morosini is found in Eleftheriou Venizelou Square, but the locals call it Lions Square or Lion for short.

6. Heraklion Market

The Heraklion veg market

The Heraklion central market is a bustling place, where you'll find fruit and veg sellers, butchers, fishmongers, olives, cheese, and a few random tourist stalls thrown in for good measure.

Whether you actually need to buy anything or not, you should visit here for a half hour or so as part of your Heraklion sightseeing itinerary.

Located 1866 Street, between the Meidani and Kornarou Square, this is a good place to get a feel for the authentic side of Cretan life. You'll also see why the food in Crete tastes so good!

7. Venetian Loggia

This impressive building has it's origins from the time of the Venetians. Today, the Venetian Loggia is the Heraklion Town Hall and can be found on St. Titus Square.

venetian loggia heraklion

Whilst it's certainly a stand out piece of architecture, it's likely to be just a quick photo stop as you walk around Heraklion town.

8. Agios Titos Church

Just around the corner from the Loggia, is one of the most impressive churches on Crete. The church is dedicated to Agios Titos (Saint Titus), a disciple of Apostle Paul and first Bishop of Crete.

It has been rebuilt and repaired many times over the centuries since it was first constructed in the 10th century.

Church of Agios Titos in heraklion

If it's open when you are walking around the top attractions of Heraklion, pop inside to take a look at the chandeliers and interior. If not, sit back and enjoy the view of it from one of the surrounding cafes with a coffee !

9. Take a food tour in Heraklion

Another way to get a good idea of what Heraklion is about, and to try some local foods at the same time, is to take a walking food tasting tour .

Trying the food in Heraklion, Crete

Even if you don't take a food tour, at least make sure you sample some of the local delicacies on offer in Heraklion! There's lots of great places to eat.

Dave's Heraklion Eating Tip: Check out Google maps for the most recent reviews of each place to eat in Heraklion center!

10. Natural History Museum of Crete

While there's obviouslt lots of things to see and do in Heraklion Old Town, just outside there are also some worthwhile attractions to visit. One of those is the Natural History Museum of Crete, which I visited the last time I was in Heraklion in October 2023.

If you're taking a vacation with kids, this might be a nice place to visit for a few hours. Even if you're not with kids, I'm sure you'll love it. What's not to like about dinosaurs!

A dinosaur outside the Natural History Museum of Crete in Heraklion

Visit the Natural History Museum of Crete to explore some of the ecosystems unique to Crete and see animals that thrive in this climate. There's also an earthquake simulator inside the museum!

11. Historical Museum of Crete

As we've seen, when it comes to things to do in Heraklion, there's nor shortage of museums to visit! The Crete Historical Museum is another one to add to you itinerary.

This one is housed in an impressive building which is inspired by neoclassical architecture and built in the early 1900s. The historical museum of Crete contains exhibitions which detail the extensive history of the island from the early Christian times of the Byzantine era through to Ottoman rule and beyond.

You can find it around a 10 minute walk away from the Old Harbor, and it's close by to the Natural History Museum.

12. Check out the beaches in Heraklion

I've seen many guides on things to do in Heraklion feature beaches such as Matala and Malia. I'm really not sure why, as Matala is over an hour away by car! There are, however, closer beaches to Heraklion itself.

The best beaches near Heraklion include Ammoudara beach which is just 5 km away from Heraklion, and Palaiokastro beach 8 kms away. The latter is a good choice for families, as it's sheltered from northern winds and there are no beach bars pumping out loud music.

13. Day Trips from Heraklion

Some of the best things to do in Heraklion can be, well, a little outside the city itself. It's a good place from which to take day trips to other parts of the island.

Popular day trip tours that will help you experience the real Crete include:

Day Tour of Spinalonga, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda & Plaka

Crete: Land Rover Safari on Minoan Route

Day 1 of Your Heraklion Itinerary

Start in the city center and the koules.

start travel heraklion

Your day in Heraklion could not start in a better way than enjoying breakfast in the city’s central square, Liontaria, or just The Lions , as locals call it. On one corner of the square, there’s a Venetian fountain dating back to 1628.

It used to be the source of drinking water for the local inhabitants of Heraklion and it is still gushing water from the head of the four lions that decorate the fountain.

Choose one of the several bars around the area to enjoy a traditional pastry and some coffee. We discussed Cretan bougatsa in our Chania itinerary (a custard-filled flaky filo pastry enjoyed all times of day), and, as you might imagine, also Heraklion has its bougatsa place. It’s called Kirkor , and it’s a must-go place in town.

Next up, reach the pedestrian 25 August Street , and slowly make your way down to the port. This elegant street with Neoclassical buildings, such as the Venetian Loggia , is also home to one of Heraklion’s most important churches, Agios Titos .

start travel heraklion

This impressive church was built during the Byzantine period of Crete (around the 9th century), but it was also transformed into a mosque while the Ottomans ruled on Crete. When the Turkish finally left the island, the Herakliots tore down the minaret to celebrate the end of the occupation.

Walk a bit further until you reach the waterfront. Over here, you can explore the Koules , a magnificent square fortress built by the Venetians. Visit the different rooms inside and head to the rooftop to get a panoramic view of Heraklion and the modern port.

Wander the Open Market on 1866 Street

Back to the city center from the fortress, walk past Liontaria to get to another landmark in town, the Open Market of Heraklion on 1866 Street.

Often crowded with locals and visitors alike, the market is the best place in town to shop for souvenirs and local delicacies. Among the best things to take back home as a memento of your trip, choose small bottles of Cretan extra virgin olive oil, jars of spoon sweet or marmalade, or local herbs and spices – they make wonderful Greek souvenirs .

Stop for a bite in Plateia Eleftheria , another popular meeting point in town. Our favorite place for a convenient lunch on the go is Krasas . This restaurant is a local’s favorite! If you want more suggestions, we also have a Heraklion restaurant guide .

For a traditional Greek meal, grab an authentic gyro wrap for just a few euros; their menu has so many varieties to choose from that you’ll probably come back for more.

Alternately, if you want to get a better sense of Heraklion’s delicious culinary potential, check out a 2-hour food tour of the city. This tasty tour covers the basics of Cretan cuisine and gives you a perfect introduction to the unique offerings of Crete — with several tastings, of course! — which differ from generic Greek food. Book your food tour here .

Visit the marvelous Archaeological Museum of Heraklion

start travel heraklion

A great place to spend your afternoon, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion has been placed on the list of best museums to visit in Greece.

It houses a magnificent collection mostly focused on the Minoan civilization, such as the Disc of Festos and findings from different archaeological sites on the island.

It’s the place to go if you plan on visiting any of Crete’s four Minoan palaces any time during your trip. For a complete insight, it’s a great idea to book a guided visit .

The museum is in the center of town, close to Plateia Eleftheria. It opens every day from 8 am to 7 pm, (closing at 3 pm in winter). The entrance ticket is €6, but for €10 you can buy a combo ticket that will also allow you to access the Archaeological Palace of Knossos.

Enjoy the evening in Heraklion

Our favorite place to be at night is the area surrounded by Milatou, Meramveliou, and Aretoussas streets . All of them are pedestrian roads and are full of small restaurants, taverns, pubs, and clubs.

Choose Plastelina for a cocktail in a cozy atmosphere and inventive drinks.

For dinner in the same area, O Tempelis serves the best mezedes in Heraklion.

Mezedes are small bites of traditional Greek dishes, including tzatziki, meatballs with cumin and herbs, spicy mushrooms in tomato sauce, or marinated fish.

We strongly suggest that you arrive early if you want to find a place to sit. Remember that in Greece it’s customary to have dinner late, and this place is usually packed with locals.

Day 2 of Your Heraklion Itinerary

Spend the day in hersonissos and koutouloufari.

Far from being a traditional or relaxing place, Hersonissos is, by far, the most popular beach resort on Crete, ideal for those interested in a day by the beach with plenty of music, cocktails, and pristine seas.

The atmosphere is young and a bit noisy, and if you feel you’ve had enough, move to a more tranquil shore, such as the area of Limanakia , also known as the Coves of Hersonissos.

These start in the beautiful Cape Sarandaris , a very calm and shallow bay, great for snorkeling. There are a few laid-back cafes in the area for a bite or a cold beer by the sea.

If you want to do something different from just lazily lounging on the beach, devote the afternoon to walking up to the quiet village of Koutouloufari .

Koutouloufari is a picturesque hamlet built on the rather low slopes of Mount Pirgia. Here you can discover the typical traits of Cretan architecture, walk along the tiny alleys, and relax in one of the many tavernas serving the local cuisine.

Thanks to its elevated position, the village offers spectacular views of the bay of Hersonissos at sunset.

Bonus: Day Trips in the Heraklion Region

There are many places you can visit if you have extra time to spend in the region.

You can reach the south of the Heraklion region to visit one of Crete’s most famous beaches, or you can also explore Crete’s best wine area and wineries around the villages of Archanes and Peza.

Those who choose to stay on the northern coast can find an alternative to the more crowded Knossos in the less popular archaeological site of Malia. Read through these proposals and go for the one that best matches your travel style.

start travel heraklion

Matala is a famous village and beach in the south of Heraklion. The direct bus to Matala departs from Heraklion every 4 hours and the ticket is a little less than €10 and the trip lasts about 2.5 hours. You can get there by taxi or transfer (about €75) or drive.

Matala is a beach on the Libyan Sea, made popular back in the 60s when hippies all over the world used to come to Crete and live in the ancient caves on one of the sides of the bay.

If you enjoy trekking and outdoor hikes, it’s a good idea to walk across the hill that separates Matala from the hidden Red Beach, with a natural corner, an even stronger flower power vibe, and excellent submarine landscapes for snorkeling.

Heraklion Wine Region

start travel heraklion

For the wine lover in you, there’s no better region on Crete than Heraklion, where you can find some of the oldest vineyards in Europe, going as far back as the Bronze Age.

In the area, it’s a good idea to make a stop in one of the many wineries of Heraklion. Some of them are open to the public all year round and offer wine tasting sessions, vineyard visits, and even local food sampling.

To have a good panorama of the local wine production, you can visit Lyrarakis winery, the biggest producer of Crete, in the village of Alagni.

If you prefer a more intimate atmosphere, check Gavalas Crete Wines , a family winery in the small villages of Vorias, or Silva Daskalaki , in the picturesque village of Siva.

Minoan Palace of Malia

start travel heraklion

If you have already seen the Minoan Palace of Knossos and are eager for more, or if, instead, you prefer to stay away from the crowds that every day visit the famous archaeological site, check the Minoan Palace of Malia , 34 km from the city center of Heraklion.

Malia is Crete’s third-biggest Minoan Palace and it spreads across an area of about 750 square meters. According to archaeologists, the structure used to have two floors, magazines, workshops, theatres, and royal quarters.

Archaeologists have also found the rest of a Minoan town around the palace area, part of it open to the public, where it is believed that the inhabitants were skilled in the production of pottery, seals, and large vases, known as pithoi , which can still be seen.

It was in Malia that one of the most impressive pieces of jewelry from the Minoan times was unearthed in Crete. It’s a magnificent gold pendant with bees holding a berry. The famous bee pendant of Malia is permanently exposed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion.

What to Pack for a Crete Beach Vacation

Greece - Crete - Heraklion - Old Venetian Harbor Luggage

If you’re planning a trip to Crete, you’ll want to pack all the normal essentials, but here are a few things we strongly recommend bringing that may not have crossed your mind. For more, check out our  Essential Crete Packing List.

–  A Physical Guidebook  – While travel blogs are great, we also definitely see the benefit of having a good paper guidebook in hand to refer to in your on-the-ground travel. We own and recommend the  Lonely Planet Greece  book as a starter, but you may also want to pick up the  Lonely Planet Crete  which covers the island more in-depth.

–  A water bottle with a filter . While generally, the tap water in big cities on Crete is drinkable, we generally recommend using a water bottle with a purifying filter to reduce your plastic consumption and ensure you won’t drink any funny-tasting water on your stomach that could make your trip unpleasant! We recommend  the GRAYL water bottle  – it filters water perfectly in an instant so that you can even drink from lakes, bad taps, etc.

–  Motion sickness pills . Crete bus rides can cause motion sickness! If you have a weak stomach as we do, save yourself and bring some  non-drowsy motion sickness pills .

–  Wet wipes, hand sanitizer, TP & other Balkan transit needs.  Bathrooms in the Balkans on trains and buses tend to be… how can we say it?… not so well-stocked. Save yourself the disappointment and bring a mini-rescue pack of  wet wipes  &  hand sanitizer .

–  Travel safety items . We think Crete is very safe to travel to, but at the same time, it never hurts to be prepared! Some people like to carry money belts, but neither Allison nor I use these.

Instead, we both carry the same  PacSafe anti-theft backpack . It has locking zippers, slash-proof construction with metal mesh hidden in the fabric, and tons of other smart security features — all while being cute and stylish enough to be our everyday bag. We recommend it highly for both male and female travelers, as it’s neutral enough to be unisex. We also strongly recommend travel insurance! Our recommendation is at the bottom of the post.

Ultimate Guide to Things to do in Heraklion Crete [2023]

Heraklion is the capital city of Crete, the biggest of Greece’s many islands and personally I think one of the best in Greece. I have been to Crete twice already and I love returning each time, so I;ve pulled together my favourite things to do in Heraklion, in addition to my previous guide to Ag Nik!  Visiting Crete in general is recommended for the bucket list of any travel lover, but Heraklion in particular is an interesting metropolis, boasting culture, history, and really delicious food, all rolled into one. Still not convinced that this stunning port city, with enough history to keep you busy for a good few weeks, is for you?

Heraklion, also known as Iraklio, is a port city and the capital of the Greek island of Crete. It’s known for the Palace of Knossos, just outside the city. The huge archaeological site dates back thousands of years to the Minoan civilization, and includes frescoes and baths. Guarding the city’s Venetian port is the 16th-century Koules fortress. Heraklion Archaeological Museum has a large collection of Minoan art.  I’ve put together a list of seven things to do in Heraklion, and why you should book those flights, and head to this wonderful city ASAP. And make sure you check out my posts from my previous trip to this magical island at the bottom of the post…..

  • Koules Fortress
  • Agios Minas Cathedral
  • The Old Venetian Harbour
  • Museum of Visual Arts
  • Morosini Lions Fountain
  • Wineries and vineyards

Here is my ultimate guide to things to do in Heraklion….

Things to do in Heraklion

HOW TO GET TO  HERAKLION

Heraklion airport is home to plenty of incoming and outgoing direct UK flights via Viking Airlines. You can also fly indirect from the UK with Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air, Lufthansa and Athens Airways. Plus Delta, Cyprus Airways, Brussels Airlines and Belleair. There’s direct flights to Heraklion from Bristol, Gatwick and Manchester airports.

There are direct cheap flights to Heraklion from a range of UK airports, including:

  • London to Heraklion – 3 hours 45 minutes
  • Manchester to Heraklion – 4 hours 5 minutes
  • Birmingham to Heraklion – 4 hours
  • Glasgow to Heraklion – 4 hours 20 minutes
  • Edinburgh to Heraklion – 4 hours 25 minutes

WHEN TO GO TO  HERAKLION

The best and warmest weather is between May and October, with the months of June, July and August being the real high season. Flights and accommodation are more expensive at this time and crowds for major attractions can get fairly large. Towards the end of summer, from September onwards, things start to calm down a little and the weather can still be warm enough for a sea swim until late October. This is also a great time to find cheap flights to Heraklion.

WHERE TO STAY IN HERAKLION

The best places to stay in Heraklion are ideal for exploring many of the island’s highlights and have easy access to a good selection of beaches.

Out of the Blue Capsis Elite – Opulent resort of five hotels in one on a private peninsula. Highly discreet, with striking designs, each hotel different. Plenty of suites and private villas with pools. Seven restaurants. The resort is popular with wealthy Russians and others.

Candia Suites – This stylish hotel offers accommodation in the centre of Heraklion. The bright, individually dressed suites have modern amenities, comfy soft furnishings and pretty balconies. In-room dining is available, or relax on the hotel’s roof terrace. Great for families or couples exploring the old town.

LATO HOTEL – One of the town’s more modern designer hotels. Contemporary lines and trendy minimalist living areas. Spacious rooms and suites with balconies and sea views. Three good restaurants, gym, spa and meeting rooms. A modern choice.

If you’d prefer to stay in an apartment or private villa I’d recommend visiting booking.com .

THINGS TO DO IN HERAKLION

Knossos is one of the main reasons that people visit Heraklion, and it is a site with immense historical value just outside the city (so look into car rental Heraklion if you’re heading here). Often noted as Europe’s oldest city, this archeological site dates back to the Bronze Age (which is around 3000 – 1200 BC for those who aren’t too history savvy). The ruins are a labyrinth of culture, but are well-known for being the apparent home of half-man, half-bull Minotaur , who attacked his victims within this maze, which was designed so that they could never escape. In 2019, it’s unlikely that you’ll suffer the same fate, so take a visit to Knossos if you can.

If you’re looking to take in as much history as possible, Koules Fortress is a good shout. This 16th century Venetian fortress will take you back in time as you look around all of the different rooms, which were used as prisons cells, food stores, and hideaways for ammunition. Nowadays, you can just enjoy reading a little bit about the fortress, and you also get to see the beautiful views from the top, which is ideal if you’re looking to see the city from a different perspective. Another bonus of this place is that it’s good for those travellers on a budget , at €1 per person to take a look around.

Let’s be honest, are there any travel lovers out there who don’t like to take a visit to a cathedral every once in a while? If you’re a fan of all things architecture and you want to see what Crete has to offer, then you won’t be disappointed with the Agios Minas Cathedral . If you think the outside is impressive, then wait until you see the stunning and colourful interior, lined with impressive chandeliers. This is the largest church that you’ll find throughout the whole of Crete, so adding it to your list is an absolute must if you’re looking for some culture. Take it from us: you should definitely not forget to look up when you get inside.

If you’re visiting Heraklion, the Old Venetian Harbour is a must, even if you’re only having a slow walk around to appreciate the scenery. The port is still in use by the local fishermen and those who own – and dock – boats nearby, but it was first established around the 9th or 10th century, and has a history that is as extensive as that of Heraklion itself. If you’re around this area, try to get a bite to eat somewhere near the harbour, and enjoy people watching, as many Cretans – not to be confused with cretins , which could be awkward – like to stroll around the harbour.

Another place to soak up some Heraklion culture is the Museum of Visual Arts, and this one focuses upon the modern wonders of Crete, rather than the old ones. This museum calls a former Basilica its home (which is pretty cool in itself) and prides itself on promoting the work of Cretan artists, as well as hosting lectures and seminars on the important artistic ideas throughout the island. This is certainly one of the venues that brings the city back into the 21st century, so add this to your list if you’re looking for a break from all of the extensive history that Heraklion has to offer.

We know, right? Another piece of 16th century history leaving us all wondering, ‘when is Heraklion going to give it a break with all of this amazing cultural importance that it keeps putting on show?’ Although the Morosini Lions Fountain is not really significant enough to make a whole trip out of, try and go via the fountain when you’re having a wander around, as it is worth seeing. Lions Square, where the fountain is based, is one of the busiest parts of Heraklion, so you’ll probably find yourself here at some point anyway, taking in the hustle and bustle of the city.

Crete is home to a whole host of wineries and vineyards, and Heraklion is no exception. Whilst this can be one of the more expensive ways to spend your time in the city, learning about the history of Crete’s wine production is certainly interesting for even the most seasoned traveller. You may have to rent a car, as is the case with Knossos, but venturing out of the city to these places if you have more time will be a worthwhile endeavour. Many of these wineries are also home to some tasty Greek restaurants, so make sure that you grab some food here whilst you’re around (oh, and a bottle of wine, of course).

If you’re considering a trip to Heraklion, then going to these 7 places is certainly worthwhile, and will make your trip a memorable one. Of course, there are many more appealing factors to this beautiful city, from the delicious food, to the many bustling streets of shops and bars, but these are some of the main excursions that you may want to go on during the day, to make sure that you get in a bit of Heraklion culture. Enjoy your trip to Crete (and its restaurants and vineyards) and Heraklion in particular, which is arguably one of the most interesting cities in Europe.

Dia is also a popular sailing destination.

Dia has no infrastructure at all, only a small white church in one of the four sheltered bays in the south. At the bay of Agios Georgios, there is a small port, and nearby are some of the beaches with sparkling clear blue waters that you can stop for a dive.

9. Archanes Village – Central Heraklion

start travel heraklion

14 km south of Heraklion and 9 km from Knossos, visiting Archanes is one of the best things to do in Crete. It is built at an altitude of 380 meters, in a closed valley crossed by the Kairatos stream, amidst vineyards and olive groves. You will love the beautiful neighborhoods with well-maintained houses, painted in vibrant colors, flower-filled balconies, and retro street lamps.

start travel heraklion

At the village square beneath dense plane trees, taverns, and cafes beckon with the aroma of local cuisine, accompanied by the warmth of raki, all enveloped in the embrace of authentic Cretan hospitality. The women’s cooperative, ‘Archanon Tastes,’ is a haven for traditional delights—crafting herb-infused rusks, jams, and spoon sweets using fruits sourced from neighboring orchards, not to mention the renowned petimezí made from local grapes.

There is also a great archaeological museum in Archanes displaying ancient wine jars, ceramic wine presses for crushing grapes, and numerous vessels that depict the everyday life in a Minoan house. The museum is open daily, except on Tuesdays , from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.

A fantastic boutique hotel with a beautiful design in Archanes is the Manili Boutique Suites & Villas.

10. Wine Tour in Archanes and Peza

start travel heraklion

It also includes a visit to a family-run olive oil producer and taste exceptional olive oils with a 3-course gourmet lunch at a local restaurant .

11. Visit Famous Matala Beach – South Heraklion

start travel heraklion

Matala Beach is 69 km south of Heraklion. It has a striking rocky backdrop with ancient caves carved into the white limestone hill that stands imposingly north of the beach. The caves were prehistoric dwellings and were used as tombs during Roman times. However, they became famous thanks to the hippies who made the beach their home from 1965 until the late 1970s.

start travel heraklion

You’re going to love the vivid red sandy beach, but heads up, it gets pretty packed during peak season. If you want to soak in all that Matala beauty without the hustle, I’d suggest hitting it up early in the morning.

start travel heraklion

Just a hop, skip, and jump, about 1.5 km away, you’ll find the equally breathtaking Red Sand Beach (Kokkini Ammos). And if you love basking in the sun with no clothes, the northern end is where you can do just that. If you’re up for mixing beach vibes with a bit of history, head just 14 km northeast of Matala to check out the famous Minoan Palace of Phaistos. It is an impressive way to switch things up and explore ancient ruins. (entrance fee €8).

Best seafront apartment in Matala: Flores Playa (self-catering).

12. Hike Agiofaraggo Gorge

start travel heraklion

If you love hiking and crossing gorges that lead to breathtaking turquoise beaches, Agiofaraggo is a must-visit destination. Located 80 km south of Heraklion, this hidden gem resides in Crete’s isolated and wild area. Start your journey by driving up to the Monastery of Panagia Odigitria in the village of Sivas.

Upon reaching the monastery, choose the left dirt road (towards Kaloi Limenes), driving cautiously. After 4 kilometers, you’ll spot a sign indicating Agiofarago, guiding you to the right towards a plateau where you can park.

start travel heraklion

Tip: Locals advise avoiding leaving your car under trees, as the area’s goats may use it as a climbing aid to reach the high leaves of the trees, potentially causing damage to your car.

The hike from the parking area to the beach is easy and it will take you 20 to 30 minutes to reach the beach. The gorge is a place of great natural beauty, filled with olive trees, laurels, and various herbs, with distinctive cliffs featuring caves. As you approach the beach, 250 meters beforehand, you’ll encounter the Byzantine church of Agios Antonios, adding a touch of historical charm to your hike.

start travel heraklion

The beach stretches for 1.5 kilometers, has fine pebbles, and crystal clear blue waters, and is surrounded by the Kapsala hill cliffs. It is not organized so bring with you plenty of water and snacks.

start travel heraklion

Head to the western side of the beach, where a natural arch awaits, providing an opportunity to swim in what feels like a small private pool. Agiofaraggo is undeniably a fascinating destination to explore in Heraklion in Crete.

1 Day in Heraklion: What To Do in the Cretan Capital

Fishing boats in Heraklion harbour

How to see the highlights of the Cretan capital in 24 hours; including the unmissable Palace of Knossos and where to find the most delicious custard pie ever.

Unlike nearby Chania and Rethymnon, Crete’s capital (you might also see it go by the Greek spelling Iraklio ) is not known for its beautiful architecture. Tourists flock here for the nightlife of nearby mega-resorts (such as the notorious Malia and Hersonissos) and the famous Minoan palace Knossos.

I visited in late October and most of the summer crowds have dispersed; the city belongs to its silent pigeons, heads cocked in a doze. Mind you there are plenty of older tourists, mainly American, sock pulled up – presumably here for the antiquities rather than the nightlife. I meet one on the bus who looks just like Rick Steves.

If you catch Heraklion at the right time of day, it smells of cinnamon and indistinguishable delicious meat smells. And it sounds of Stelios Kazantzakis (literally – nearly every cafe and bar I walk into is playing his hits).

Prawn street art in the 1866 market

Modern Heraklion is a bit of a concrete shambles thanks to extensive damage during WWII, so it takes a little exploring to discover its hidden charms. Culturally, it’s a robust and vibrant working town with a large student population. There’s plenty going on if you know where to look (or know someone who can tell you where to look).

If you’re just in Heraklion for one day (which seems to be pretty common, as many people stop over to see Knossos before heading to the east or west ends of the island), it’s entirely possible to see the highlights in just 1 day.

Cheese bougatsa and cold beer in Heraklion

I recommend starting the morning with the city’s beloved bougatsa . Bougatsa is basically delicious creamy things in filo pastry, topped with a dusting of cinnamon. The most common version is the delicious custard which you’ll find throughout Greece (especially in the north), but here try the mithzira cheese version with honey. It comes flattened out with a fork for eating. There’s even minced meat version.

There are two cafes on Lion Square next to each other that are famous for this delicious treat. The first cafe you see –  Phyllosophies – is larger and is puns galore. Kirkor is tucked away behind the first. If you can’t get a seat in the morning, try it as a mid-afternoon snack and hunt around the neighbouring streets for loukoumades (deep-fried dough balls in honey) instead.

Sweet cream bougatsa in Heraklion

From Lion Square (or Eleftheriou Venizelou Square, to give it its proper name) you can wander up Odos 1866 which is the old market street. It’s mostly tourist knick-knacks these days, but you’ll find the odd thing of interest (especially in the spice and herb shops) and if you wander away from the main streets in the morning you’ll find fishmongers and butchers.

From here head towards the Archaeological Museum . Heraklion has a handful of good museums, but this is the first one you should check out. In fact, it’s one of the best museums I’ve been to in Greece – not just for its impressive collections but also the way it conveys the context (something strangely ignored in some museums).

Also (and I admit this as an ancient history graduate) I never knew the Minoans were so cool. I’ve seen my fair share of ancient artefacts over the past decade, but there’s something particularly vivid and primal about the bull-worship and snake priestesses of Minoan culture. And some awesome pottery. Plus, I had no idea how huge the Palace of Knossos was (there’s a wooden mock-up).

It made me excited to visit the site itself.

At the time of writing, entry to the museum was€10 (or€16 for a combined ticket with Knossos entrance).

Small statues in Heraklion Archaeological Museum

Whilst you’re down by the water, have a quick stroll around the harbour and nip into Koules – the Venetian Fortress . It was also more atmospheric (and extensive) than I expected, and it’s only €2 to get in, and worth it for the great views back towards the landmarks of the city such as the huge Venetian arsenals (big arches for storing weapons).

A short and easy bus ride takes you to the extensive ruins of Minoan Knossos, up in the hills 5km behind the city. The site is beautiful and fairly shady and well set up for the number of tourists it receives (I can imagine it gets pretty busy at the height of summer). Guides (both people and books) are available on site.

The archaeological site has a different feel to any other thanks to the ‘restoration’ of Sir Arthur Evans, who has famously (or infamously) reconstructed big parts of the site in the early 1900s. Which is why you’ll see columns painted red, unlike other sites. Even if the restorations are now deemed to be inaccurate (and despised by most archaeologists and historians), I rather like them! 2-3 hours is enough unless you’re a massive ancient history nerd. There are a few tavernas in the vicinity for lunch.

The bus to Knossos is around €5 return and they leave very regularly from the road near KTEL Bus Station A , which is just past the old harbour and up a bit, to your right. You can buy tickets from the machines or pay a bit more to the driver on the bus.

Bus Station A, by the way, is the place to head if you need any info at all on buses in Crete – it has a restaurant, a cafe, and a small shop, and looks like it’s had more money spent on it than the rest of Heraklion.

Any bus information you find online is likely to be out of date, as I found out when I went looking for KTEL Bus station B (at Chaniaporta) . . . You’re unlikely to ever need to go there, as pretty much all of the tourist destinations are served from A (at the moment, at least).

Red columns at the Palace of Knossos

If you woke up at a reasonable time then you should still have a few hours left in your day. You could hit up the Historical Museum of Crete (for the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish periods as well as the German invasion), hit the beach, or do some shopping. If you’ve got kids, there’s always the Natural History Museum (it has dinosaurs and an earthquake simulator) or the Aquarium although bear in mind it’s 15km out of town.

Head up 25 August , a pedestrianised street which takes you all the way back to the centre of town. If you need a coffee en route, stop at Indigo . Unusually for Greek cafes, it goes beyond the usual frappe and freddo cappuccino with its long menu of single estate coffees and interesting teas, and you can take a seat outside which looks out onto the Church of St Titus .

The church is one of the most beautiful buildings still remaining in Heraklion. It dates to 961 and during Turkish rule was converted to a mosque. It’s surrounded by palms and cafes, as is the Agios Minas cathedral – the other notable religious building, which is one of the largest in Greece.

The other historic building that you’ll pass (they stand out easily in Heraklion) is the Venetian Loggia . You’ll find it between St Titus and the Lions Square and these days it houses the town hall, although you’d be forgiven for thinking it was mainly a selfie spot. It’s worth popping in and looking up to see the unusual shape.

Heraklion's Venetian Loggia

Whilst we’re talking coffee, proper coffee fiends should check out  Crop  whereas the best cafe in Heraklion for digital nomads is the friendly Biscotto . Popular with students it has actual comfy sofas (rare in Greece!), plenty of power points, decent coffee that comes with free cakes, and a vintage-hipster vibe.

Heraklion doesn’t have a beach in the city, the most accessible is Ammoudara which is easily reached on the city bus (line 12). If you’re in Heraklion for one day, this is the best choice as buses are so frequent. If you have extra days, then you have a few more options.

Agia Pelagia beach, Crete

I took a bus out one day to Agia Pelagia , on the nearby peninsula, because it looked nice in photos. It’s nothing special, to be honest, although the water is clear and it’s home to low-key holiday resorts and apartments. It has a chilled out family-friendly vibe and all the tavernas have photographs on their menus. But still, you can’t really go wrong with that classic combination of sun, sea, chicken souvlaki and a cold beer to wash it down.

The sea is clear and the beach is less busy than the main one at Ammoudara, so it’s a worthy alternative if you don’t like crowds. Bus times are not as frequent as you might imagine considering how close it is to the city.

If you have another whole day, it’s better to get up early to catch the bus to Matala , where you can check out the hippie caves made famous by Joni Mitchel (or head around to the Red Beach if it gets too busy). If you have a rental car, some other beach names that were recommended to me are Komos, Disko, Lenta, and Keratokampos.

Peskesi restaurant in Heraklion

After all that exploration you’ll need a good evening feed. The fish restaurants down by the water are popular with locals (Ippokampos is the best and most pricey). For grilled meats try Oti Thes or Kousineri.

Known as one of the best restaurants in Heraklion, if not the whole island,  Peskesi is tucked away in a little alley and for a moment you could think you’re in prettier Chania or Rethymnon. It’s all plants and fairy lights and upturned barrels. The menu is purely Cretan, which is pretty exciting if – like me – you’ve tried everything on standard taverna menus many times over.

Highlights from the menu include slow roasted goat in yoghurt, pork roasted with honey and thyme, and finished off with the most delicious complimentary rose liqueur which tasted of the best Turkish delight loukoumi you can imagine.

If you can still fit anything into your stomach, there’s a wine bar right opposite called OPUS which looked enticing.

And if you’re still standing, Heraklion is legendary for its tsipouradika and  rebetiko . . .

Exterior of OPUS wine bar, Heraklion

Historically all of the tourist accommodation has been outside the city in the summer resorts.

That’s slowly changing, with a few interesting boutique options cropping up:  Veneziano Boutique Hotel is the classiest option in a beautifully renovated historic building, whilst the LATO Boutique Hotel is more modern and has harbour views.

I stayed at boutique hostel Intra Muros which is a good basic option for a night or two in the summertime, and there’s another boutique hostel in town called So Young . It’s worth noting that you can find private rooms in traditional domatia or apartments on Airbnb for not much more.

Greece Travel Secrets

ONE DAY IN HERAKLION, CRETE

knossos palace

Heraklion, aka ‘Iraklio’ is the capital city of the island of Crete, Greece’s largest island, and serves as one of the island’s primary urban centers. It is a popular cruise ship stop, and while this will give you only a tiny glimpse of Greece’s largest island, it is possible to really enjoy one day in Heraklion.

Renowned for its blend of medieval and modern architecture, Heraklion is steeped in rich history and cultural heritage, with roots tracing back to the Minoan civilization, as evidenced by the nearby Palace of Knossos, among other things.

Where is Heraklion?

The city is a vibrant hub for commerce, culture, and tourism, offering visitors a mix of historical attractions. History and Mythology buffs from all over the world come to see Knossos Palace and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum which houses significant Minoan artifacts, and there are also lively markets, cafes, and restaurants.

Surrounded by fortified walls constructed by the Venetians in the 15th century, Heraklion boasts a picturesque harbor, and beautiful beaches nearby, and is a gateway to exploring Crete’s diverse landscapes and historical sites.

The city’s warm Mediterranean climate, combined with its rich history and modern amenities, makes Heraklion a popular destination for travelers seeking to experience the essence of Greek island life.

Where do the cruise ships dock in Heraklio?

Cruise ships docking in Heraklion, Crete, primarily use the Heraklion Port, which is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. This port is well-equipped to handle several large cruise ships at a time and is located conveniently close to the city center, offering easy access to Heraklion’s main attractions.

The disembarkation process in Heraklion, as in most ports, involves a few key steps:

Clearance Procedures: Upon arrival, the ship’s crew must complete port and customs clearances. Passengers usually wait on board until these formalities are completed.

Disembarkation: The disembarkation process is fairly straight forward with passengers disembarking in groups according to the ship’s schedule or their booked shore excursions. Most shipped tie up to the dock and passengers can walk right off.

Transport and Tours: Just outside the cruise terminal, passengers will find various transportation options, including taxis, buses, and sometimes shuttle services provided by the cruise line or local operators.

Security and Identification: Passengers are usually required to carry some form of identification (a passport or a government-issued ID) and their cruise ship pass for re-entry to the port and ship.

How to get around Heraklion

Visitors to Heraklion, the largest city on the island of Crete, Greece, have several options when it comes to exploring the city and its surrounds:

Walking : Heraklion’s city center is relatively compact, making walking a viable and enjoyable option for exploring. Many of the main attractions –  shops, museums, and restaurants are close together.

Public Buses : Heraklion has an extensive public bus system that connects the city center with the airport, port, nearby beaches, and other towns across Crete. Buses are a cost-effective way to travel, especially for longer distances outside of the city.

Taxis : Taxis are readily available in Heraklion and can be a convenient way to move around, especially if you’re traveling in a group or with lots of luggage. Some of them may be happy to say with you the whole day and proudly show you around their town. Always agree on the fare before starting your journey or ensure the meter is running.

Car Rentals : Renting a car will give you the flexibility to explore Heraklion and the surrounding areas at your own pace. Crete has many beautiful places that are easier to access with a car. Driving in Crete is fairly easy if you stick to the main roads and highways. There are some great road trips to enjoy, especially if you can stay a week or two!

Bicycles and Scooters : For short distances, renting a bicycle or a scooter can be a fun and efficient way to get around. This option offers greater flexibility and the ability to explore off-the-beaten-path areas.

Hop-On Hop-Off Tour Buses : Catching the red HOHO bus is a good way to see the city’s main attractions, allowing you to explore the sights at your own pace with various stops that you can visit.

One Day in Heraklion Activities

It is likely your cruise will offer several tours that you can do. This can be easy and convenient as you simply follow the instructions of the Guide or Activities Director and join the rest of the tour.

The downside to these tours is they are often more expensive than doing them independently, and they usually result in large crowds of people all descending on the same attractions at the same time. It also means you will be bound to the times dictated by the tour which may be at a slower pace than you would like, or perhaps too rushed.

As an alternative you can book some tours direct and these are the ones on offer that we think are the best value and the most enjoyable. Be sure to check the start and finish times to ensure they work with your ships schedule!

Knossos Palace Skip-the-line guided tour

The most important archaeological site in Crete and one of the most famous across the country if the Palace of Knossos.

First erected around 2000 BC in 1700 BC, a catastrophic earthquake destroyed the Palace and a new one was built immediately, the most monumental of all. For over 300 years it represented the pre-eminent center of power in Bronze Age Crete and was an imposing complex with significant architectural innovations, splendid frescoes, hundreds of rooms across its four stories, impressive storage facilities & engineering, specialized workshops, and spacious courts hosting ceremonies and feasts.

It was the throne of King Minos and home to the Minotaur, who lived in its dungeons.

With this tour you will need to catch a taxi from the port but if you do it quickly you will beat the hundreds of cruise ship passengers who arrive by bus.

The price includes entry to the site, a licensed tour guide and a headset for easy audio. It is capped at 16 people per group.

Land Rover Safari on the Minoan Route

Explore the scenic landscape of Crete on an 8-hour Land Rover safari, and travel off-road along the old Minoan Path. Enjoy panoramic views during a barbecue lunch with unlimited wine on the Lassithi Plateau. Visit quaint villages, see the cave where Zeus was born, and lots more.

This tour does take 8 hours so be sure your ship’s schedule allows for this.

Food Tasting Walking Tour

Experience Heraklion like a local & explore the best the city has to offer. Learn about the culinary culture & wander in local neighborhoods as you eat and sip your way through authentic Heraklion.

Experience real Cretan food at 8 local-favourite stops away from the tourist crowds and sample local delights including unique Cretan cheeses, Heraklion’s bougatsa, the world famous Cretan olive oil and enjoy a glass of local wine and learn about the local wine making process that dates back to the Bronze Age

Sail Boat Cruise to Dia Island

Embark on a private cruise or a group trip to Dia Island and explore this rugged place with plenty of time to swim, snorkel, or relax on its pristine shores.  Enjoy fishing, swimming in the crystal clear water, taking a walk among the island’s cedar trees, or just relaxing in the quiet bay overlooking Heraklion.

Snorkeling and fishing equipment are provided for your comfort and convenience by the attentive crew, along with unlimited refreshments and seasonal fruits.

One Day Itinerary in Heraklion for families

9 am – Get the Palace and the Archaeological Museum out of the way before it gets too hot and crowded( do the Museum after the Palace)

11 am – Visit the Natural History Museum of Crete and/or the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology . Yes, it’s a lot of museums but families really do love these two!

Have dinner at child-friendly places such as Lucky’s Souvlaki, Mama’s Restaurant, Cacio e Pepe and Avocado.

Heraklion: 15 EPIC Things To Do! Don’t miss no. 8!

If I had the choice to visit only one place in the whole of Greece, Crete would be on top of my list. The reason is simple – everything that Greece is famous for can be found on this island. There are museums, archaeological sites, and beautiful beaches with crystal blue water, forests, tall mountains, culture, history, architecture, and delicious food, combined with vibrant and modern facilities too. And every one of these can be experienced right here in Heraklion.

If you don’t know much about Crete and wondering what to do in Heraklion, have no fear, there are enough beautiful sights to keep you here for months. Below are just a few Heraklion attractions you dare not miss.

The best would be to take the hop-on-hop-off bus , taking you straight to the main sights, without the stress of finding your own way. One of the first places to visit in Heraklion, is the ancient and unique palace complex at Knossos.

Things to do in Heraklion, Crete

1. visit knossos.

Situated on the southern outskirts of the city, and covering an area of over 20 000 m², Knossos is Crete’s most famous monument. This was the palace of king Minos, a descendant of Zeus, the head of the Olympian Gods.

The first palaces were built around 2000 BC (let that sink in for a while) and rebuilt several times over the next 600 years, having been destroyed by earthquakes, fires and invading armies. Intricately interwoven with mythology, King Minos is linked with the dreaded Minotaur, a half-man-half-bull beast, which was eventually killed by a young Athenian prince.

The one thing that is certainly not a myth, is that Knossos reveals a highly sophisticated civilization, with stunning architecture, vividly coloured frescoes, paintings and pillars, spread across the palace complex, consisting of 1300 rooms, halls, courts and passages all with running water, drainage and heating systems and even a theatre.

There is so much to see here, with the highlights being The Throne Room, the South Propylaeum, and the Hall of Frescoes.

Getting to Knossos from Heraklion – Knossos is easily reached by car, and public buses from anywhere in the city. Buses run regularly and cost around €1.5 (bus line 2).

Knossos entrance fee – It’s best to book a tour , which costs around €15-€20. Worth every cent. You can also choose a skip the line guided tour . It’s a bit more expensive, but you won’t have to worry about the crowds.

Knossos opening times – 8 am – 8 pm in summer and 8 am to 5 pm in winter.

2. Stop at the Archaeological Museum

For history buffs, the Archaeological Museum is another must-see in Heraklion, and it’s recommended to come here before visiting Knossos. It will give you a wider overview about Crete’s history.

Situated in the heart of the city, it’s one of the finest museums in Greece, exhibiting the largest collection of Minoan artefacts in the world, many of which were discovered at Knossos.

A two-storey building, packed with thousands of relics dating back from Neolithic to Roman times, including a huge concentration of Minoan items ranging from figurines, sculptures, vases and sarcophagi, to incredible frescoes and  intricate gold jewellery. Of special importance are the Harvester’s Vase dating back to 1500 BC, the Snake Goddess figurine from 1700 BC and of course its most famous item, the Phaistos Disc . Covered on both sides with hieroglyphic script that has not been deciphered yet.

Archaeological Museum entrance fee – Combined tickets (Museum + Knossos) cost around €20 and can be purchased from the Archaeological Museum or online (it’s best to book them online to save time), while tickets for the museum only cost €6-€12.

Archaeological Museum opening times – 8 am – 5 pm, Tuesdays 10 am – 5 pm

3. Admire Koules Fortress

Situated at the entrance to the Venetian Harbour, this imposing fortress was built by the Venetians in the 16 th century on the ruins of a previous fort. Initially named Rocca a Mare, it became Su Kulesi, under the Ottomans, until changed to Koules, by the Cretans. It’s one of the top attractions in Heraklion!

A tour through this two-storey fort, reveals a maze of quarters, passages, and halls, dotted with cannons and artefacts, while spectacular views of the harbour and city can be enjoyed from the upper floors, courtyards and defensive walls. The dungeons deep below housed many Greek revolutionaries. Surprisingly, three sculptures depicting the Winged Lion of St. Mark carved into the walls, still remain despite Crete being under Ottoman rule for over 200 years.

Koules Fortress entrance fee – 4 euros

Koules Fortress opening hours – 8 am to 6.30 pm, closed on Tuesdays

4. Visit St. Minas Cathedral

St Minas Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Crete, the biggest church on the island and one of the biggest in the whole of Greece. Built during the late 19 th century in the middle of a paved square in the town, it is dedicated to the patron saint of Heraklion, who has a fascinating story of courage and faith, having been gruesomely tortured and eventually beheaded by the Romans for refusing to denounce his Christian faith.

This building has a rich history, including a heart-warming event that occurred during its construction. When building materials arrived, the committee was unable to pay workers to offload the material. Schoolchildren then arrived forming a human chain from the harbour to the site, singing as they worked.

The church is exquisitely decorated with beautiful architecture, paintings, and Christian ceiling frescoes. You cannot escape the presence of God inside this place. You need to go there, it’s one of the top things to do in Heraklion! It’s also free to visit.

5. Grab a gyros at Hovoli Restaurant

You cannot claim to have been in Heraklion without grabbing a gyros at Hovoli Restaurant. End of discussion.

Centrally situated, cool atmosphere, delicious and generous helpings of authentic Mediterranean food loaded with Cretan flavours and hospitality, all come standard here. Gyros and souvlakia of all types plus all the other Greek delicacies will have you spoilt for choice. Just come hungry here because the gyros are the size of your head.

6. Visit Agios Titos Church

If you’re needing some calmness after a hectic day through the busy streets of Heraklion, just come here. Its interior is beautifully adorned with a massive candelabrum, icons and bright glass mosaics on the windows, throwing colourful reflections into the church, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

things to do in heraklion, heraklion tourist attractions, places to see in heraklion, heraklion attractions, heraklion must-see

Originally built during the 10 th century by the Byzantines, it was dedicated to Agios Titos (St. Titus), the patron saint and first bishop of Crete, and a disciple of the Apostle Paul. It was converted into a mosque during the Turkish occupation, and after being severely damaged by an earthquake in 1856, it was rebuilt in 1872, and today serves as an Orthodox Church. The skull of St Titus is housed in the chapel.

As with all churches in Greece, there is no entrance fee. This place must be included in your Heraklion sightseeing itinerary.

7. Visit one of the nearby beaches

As one would expect to find on any Greek island, there are no shortages of gorgeous beaches in and around Heraklion. You can find long sandy beaches, fringed with hotels, bars and cafes serving meals and drinks, sunbeds and umbrellas to rent, or less-frequented secluded coves to escape the tourist masses.

things to do in heraklion, heraklion tourist attractions, places to see in heraklion, heraklion attractions, heraklion must-see

Sea is mostly calm and clear turquoise-blue, ideal for small children, although it can get a bit choppy when the winds blow, creating perfect wind and kite surfing conditions.

Some beaches are pebbly and rocky, so it’s best to wear beach shoes or slops. Some of my favorite beaches near Heraklion are Panagia Beach, Paleokastro Beach and Amnissos Beach.

8. Grab a coffee at Mosaico (the most colorful building in the city)

A good day starts with a good cup of coffee, and nowhere better to get your favourite fix, than at the most colourful building in the city… The Mosaico! Situated in the centre of town on the ground floor of a three-storey building covered in colourful drawings, you just cannot miss it! It’s definitely one of the top attractions in Heraklion.

things to do in heraklion, heraklion tourist attractions, places to see in heraklion, heraklion attractions, heraklion must-see

Whether you’re into skinny-cappuccinos, or like it extra-strong and extra-sweet (varyglyko) where you won’t sleep for a week, they’ve got you covered. They also provide a packed menu of snacks, breakfasts, fruit drinks, wines, cocktails and spirits, to cater for all tastes.

9. Learn more at the Natural History Museum

Situated on the edge of the sea, a few hundred metres west of the Venetian Harbour, the Natural History Museum offers a welcome break from the serious archaeological stuff, showcasing the island’s fauna and flora, in a way to be enjoyed by both adults and children. It’s one of my favorite places to visit in Heraklion!

Children will enjoy exhibits of live animals and marine creatures as well as interactive screens focusing on Crete’s unique ecosystems and their importance to the welfare of the island. The highlight for children and adults, is the educational earthquake simulator.

Natural History Museum entrance fee – €7.5 for adults and €4 for children.

Natural History Museum opening hours – 9 am to 3 pm Monday-Friday and 10 am to 6 pm on weekends.

10. Stop at Loggia (Town Hall)

Located in the centre of town, this elegant building was built during the Venetian rule in the early 17 th century and designed by the architect Morosini, who is responsible for various historical landmarks in Heraklion.

things to do in heraklion, heraklion tourist attractions, places to see in heraklion, heraklion attractions, heraklion must-see

Built in Ionian and Doric styles, this impressive building was used by Venetian intellectuals to meet daily and discuss economic and political affairs, but fell into serious disrepair during the Turkish occupation of Crete, until beautifully restored during the 20the century. Today it stands as a proud reminder of its Venetian heritage, and serves as the Town Hall.

11. Shop at Central Market (for souvenir shopping)

Less than 200 metres south is the Central Market, a most charming place for souvenir shopping and a magnet for tourists. Here you can walk down delightful arcades filled with cute little shops and kiosks that sell virtually everything, from exquisite jewellery and vintage items, to cheap souvenirs, and yummy Greek delicacies.

things to do in heraklion, heraklion tourist attractions, places to see in heraklion, heraklion attractions, heraklion must-see

A lovely way to spend a few unhurried hours, despite the constant bustle of the tourist crowds, with numerous eating joints scattered in between. A far different shopping experience to the modern over-commercialised malls we can find anywhere. The Central Market is one of the must-see places in Heraklion!

12. Admire the Morosini Fountain

Nothing epitomises the heartbeat of Heraklion, quite like this famous and iconic fountain. Centrally situated in a beautiful public square near the harbour, surrounded by elegant Venetian architecture, tall cathedrals and hundreds of souvlak i and bougatsa joints, bars and delicatessens, this ornate 17 th century fountain adds even more charm and character to this ancient city.

things to do in heraklion, heraklion tourist attractions, places to see in heraklion, heraklion attractions, heraklion must-see

Built in 1629 by the architect Morosini, the fountain was the end of an aqueduct, bringing fresh drinking water to the thirsty city from Mount Youchtas some 15 km away. It is elaborately decorated with four lions gushing water from their mouths into eight lobes, each adorned with figures from Greek mythology.

There used to be a colossal marble statue of Poseidon holding his trident on top of the fountain, but nobody knows what happened to it. The government renamed this square after a local politician and Greek Prime Minister, but the locals would have none of that, and prefer to call it Ta Liondaria, (The Lions).

At night the fountain and surrounding buildings are lit up creating a truly majestic and festive atmosphere. Food tastes so much better around here.

13. Admire the Venetian Dockyards

Old harbours tend to draw people, and these Venetian Dockyards, do exactly that. Much history exists between the long mole and wharfs we see today, with the massive Koules Fortress, a clear testimony of its warring past.

What once was a working harbour filled with ancient galleys and trade ships, is now a most picturesque marina with small fishing boats, yachts and lined with charming eateries.

things to do in heraklion, heraklion tourist attractions, places to see in heraklion, heraklion attractions, heraklion must-see

One of the most relaxing things to do in Heraklion is to take a stroll along the two kilometre mole all the way to the lighthouse for spectacular views of the passenger harbour, the city and the tall Mount Youchtas in the background.

The locals have named the mole, By-pass Avenue , being frequented by many heart by-pass patients following doctors’ instructions.

14. Take a walk along the shoreline

Taking a walk along the shoreline at the end of the day allows one to wind down and discover little gems, easily missed when rushing through the touristy Heraklion attractions. There are long beautiful beaches, rocky coves, along the entire seashore, with charming little tavernas to sit down with a refreshing drink or snack and watch the sea as the sun goes down.

15. Take a day trip to Agios Nikolaos and Spinalonga

Agios Nikolaos is a beautiful seaside town, located about 60 km away from Heraklion. One of the most popular places in this town is Lake Voulismeni. Around it you can find countless shops and bars, the most vibrant area of Agios Nikolaos.

things to do in heraklion, heraklion tourist attractions, places to see in heraklion, heraklion attractions, heraklion must-see

The next stop is Spinalonga Island, a beautiful place with a dark history. At the beginning of the 1900s, the island was used as a home for people who had Leprosy. At the beginning, the conditions for the people living on the island were inhumane, but slowly improvements were made. Learn more about the island’s history in this tour !

Where to stay in Heraklion

Heraklion is the biggest city in Crete. Here you can find a wide range of accommodation option, starting with hostels and ending with 5-star luxury hotels. If you’re looking for a good value-for-money option, here are my recommendations:

  • Budget – Rooftop Cosy Apartment – beautiful spacious apartment, good location, friendly owners, good amenities
  • Mid-Range – Kastro Hotel – close to the beach, clean rooms, good amenities, great rooftop
  • Luxury – Ibis Styles – modern rooms with excellent amenities, sylish hotel with friendly staff, good restaurants

Final thoughts

Heraklion is a most tourist-friendly city with so many of its attractions being so close to each other, most of them in the historic old town district and close to the harbour and shoreline. This cuts down the time and costs of getting to and from your chosen destinations, leaving more time to enjoy this beautiful city.

May the travel bug bite you!

Navigating Crete: How to Get From Heraklion to Chania

Whether you’re an adventurous traveler, history buff, foodie, or simply enjoy beautiful landscapes, the island of Crete in Greece has it all. The island’s largest city, Heraklion, and the picturesque old town of Chania are two must-visit spots. If you’re wondering how to travel from Heraklion to Chania, this detailed guide offers you the most common transportation options, with pricing and tips to enhance your travel experience.

Table of Contents

Travel by Bus

Traveling by bus is perhaps the most economical and straightforward way to get from Heraklion to Chania.

The public bus system in Crete is managed by KTEL. They operate regular services between Heraklion and Chania, making it easy for travelers to move around the island. The journey takes around 2.5-3 hours, depending on traffic conditions.

A one-way ticket for this route typically costs around 15 Euros as of 2023, although prices may vary slightly. Buses are comfortable, air-conditioned, and some even offer free Wi-Fi. The main bus station in Heraklion is near the city center and easily accessible. In Chania, the central bus station is conveniently located close to the old town.

Travel by Car

If you prefer flexibility and convenience, renting a car may be your best option. This gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace, stop at scenic points along the way, and visit other interesting places like Rethymno.

Car rental prices in Crete vary greatly depending on the type of car and rental company. A compact car might cost you around 30-40 Euros per day, excluding fuel. The journey from Heraklion to Chania by car takes approximately 2-2.5 hours via the National Road, depending on traffic and the speed you’re comfortable with.

Remember to factor in the costs of fuel and any car parking fees in Chania. It’s also worth noting that parking in Chania can be challenging, especially during the peak summer season.

Travel by Taxi or Private Transfer

For a more relaxed and hassle-free journey, consider a taxi or private transfer. This is a particularly good option if you have a lot of luggage, are traveling with children, or prefer not to wait for public transport.

The journey from Heraklion to Chania by taxi or private transfer takes around 2 hours. The cost is significantly higher than the bus or car rental option, with prices typically starting from 120 Euros and going up depending on the service level. It’s advisable to agree on the fare with the driver before you start your journey or to book your transfer in advance through a reliable company.

Travel by Ferry

While there’s no direct ferry connection between Heraklion and Chania, you can enjoy a coastal journey with a combination of ferry and bus rides. You can take a ferry from Heraklion to Rethymno, and from there, catch a bus to Chania.

The ferry trip to Rethymno lasts about 2.5 hours, with prices starting around 10 Euros. From Rethymno, it’s another hour by bus to Chania, with a ticket cost of around 7 Euros. Though this option requires more time, it offers a unique way to enjoy Crete’s beautiful coastline.

Conclusion: Choose the Best Option for You

Each mode of transport from Heraklion to Chania offers a different balance of cost, convenience, and experience. Your choice depends on your budget, time constraints, and personal preferences.

The bus offers an economical solution; a car provides the most freedom; a taxi or private transfer ensures comfort and ease, and the ferry allows for a unique travel experience.

No matter how you choose to travel, the journey from Heraklion to Chania takes you through some of Crete’s most beautiful landscapes. Enjoy the journey, and happy travels!
