The origin of Slender Man as a creepypasta internet meme that gained traction on an online forum before becoming viral and exploding into a worldwide phenomenon has always fascinated me. It’s perhaps one of the best modern examples of how a legend or myth might come to life, its genesis and spread happening in real time for all to observe, especially following a series of violent related incidents widely covered by the media. The surreal nature of this now iconic horror figure is what immediately drew me to this book, simply titled Slender Man by an author whom, in a very meta touch, has been kept anonymous, which should clue you in as to the style and mood of story you’re in for…

In basic terms, Slender Man is an epistolary novel comprised of journal entries, emails, text messages, voice transcripts, and other forms of documentation surrounding the life of high school student Matt Barker, who is on a mission to discover the truth of what happened to his friend and classmate Lauren Bailey. The popular teen girl from Riley, an elite New York City high school, went out one night and never returned. Within hours, rumors were flying all over Riley speculating on her whereabouts, though secretly, Matt knows Lauren well enough to know the majority of them have no basis in fact. While the two teens never ran in the same circles at school, they have maintained a close friendship that neither of them advertised publicly, keeping most their correspondence through texts. Lauren had an obsession with dark subjects that, as far as Matt knew, he was the only one she ever shared with, sending with him gruesome stories and pictures that she found online that she thought were funny or interesting.

After days go by with no headway on the police investigation into the disappearance, Matt decides to take matters into his own hands, uncovering a series of strange photoshopped images on Lauren’s cloud drive, proving irrefutably that she was drawn to the legend of Slender Man. Given how the stories go—that any attention given to Slender Man is in fact a foolhardy way to summon the creature or draw its notice—Matt believes his friend is in serious danger, and the terrifying dreams he has almost nightly seem to confirm his bad feelings.

Due to its format, I suspect Slender Man will not be a book for everybody, and if you have struggled with epistolary novels in the past, it’s possible you may run into similar issues with this one. The style itself is limiting in certain situations, especially when the story calls for descriptive action. Often you end up with awkward moments where the character resorts to oral dictation and info-dumping, ludicrously stating out everything he/she is doing, and we have a few instances of this here where the forced narrative pulled me out of the immersion. One other thing to note is that the book is very Young Adult-oriented—which may end up being a disappointment to those who were hoping for a good scare out of this. Slender Man is at times deeply atmospheric and plays with your mind a bit, but for a horror novel, I did not find it scary or even that creepy. The characters’ personalities also fit in with the overall YA tone of the story, so expect a certain level of teen angst and other genre clichés like disdainful attitudes towards healthcare workers and law enforcement (or just adults in general).

Despite these caveats, I did have a good time reading the book. While the epistolary style does not always lend itself well to character development, I thought the author did a good job painting Matt Barker as a convincing and sympathetic figure, due to the fact his journal entries make up the bulk of the novel. Matt’s emotional state is strongly felt in these entries; we get a good depiction of his confusion, the genuine concern for Lauren, as well as the crushing sense of helplessness and fear as he realizes what he must do to save her. I also enjoyed the creative use of documentation to tell the story, not to mention the sheer variety of sources ranging from newspaper clippings to the Riley school letters sent out to faculty and parents, and even snippets from Whatsapp group chats and Reddit discussion forums. I thought they were a nice touch to give the situation a more “authentic” feel, and the eclectic mix also made this a super quick and addictive read.

All too soon, the book was over, and honestly, if I have one complaint about the ending, it’s that it felt rushed and the conclusion was left a little too open. But for a story of this nature about Slender Man, perhaps there was no other way around this issue. The character became a horror phenomenon precisely because of the mystery and ambiguity surrounding its motives, and the novel’s ending seems to reflect this limitless potential for speculation and the role of reader imagination. If you don’t mind the vagueness, then you’ll probably enjoy the enigma, and certainly the unknowns added greatly to the general atmosphere of the story, which was top-notch and was a counterpoint to some of the book’s minor weaknesses. Overall a fast and fun read if you’re looking for a bit of mood reading for the spooky season!

Great review! I’m seeing this one around a lot lately and I kind of wanted to pick it up, but my biggest concern was something you mentioned: it being “too YA” for my taste. I love YA when it comes to other genres, but YA horror/thrillers are SO tough for me because they usually leave me wanting a lot more. On the other hand, though, I LOVE epistolary novels, so maybe I’ll just get it from the library or wait and see if BookOutlet stocks it! 🙂

I agree 100%! YA horror can be tough, because a lot of the times they were neither here nor there. They are never all that scary, I find. But I love epistolary novels too, so this was one I really wanted to read 😀

To be fair, I don’t think the book could have ended any other way, but yeah, still a little frustrating.

I agree it was a decent read but I wanted more horror. I loved the formatting though which definitely helped it be a quick read.

It seems everyone is reading this, like it came out of nowhere! Maybe that was the plan, lol. Yeah, probably not my thing, especially since I have so many other books I’d rather read, but I also love urban myths like this that are wrapped up in the internet and social media:-)

I’m fascinated by the whole Slender Man thing and I have a couple on the ereader to try.

The character itself is quite fascinating, especially how it came about. Definitely a creepy fairy tale for the digital age 😀

Oh, I was not aware that the Slender Man was a sort of… urban myth (?), and I had to google it to learn more… That said, I like the idea of a horror story carried out through modern ways of communication, a sort of bogeyman of the internet age 😀

Haha, I bet googling that took you down quite a rabbit hole. I remember finding out when that news story broke about the real life stabbing of a girl by two of her classmates because of the slender man myth. Really messed up stuff.

I think this is exactly how I felt. It was a quick read, I like the format and I enjoyed it overall, but, not scary and the ending didn’t satisfy me it reminded me of a particular film the way it concluded but I don’t want to mention it for spoilers. Lynn 😀

Are you familiar with Slender Man? This fictional supernatural character originated online as a creepypasta internet meme and just continued to grow from there (books, video games, movies, etc.) Stories of this modern bogeyman typically feature him stalking, even abducting, people, particularly kids. But it isn’t all fun and games as some readers of his fiction have been connected to violent acts, like for instance, the near-fatal stabbing of a 12-year old girl in Wisconsin .

But enough about Slender Man’s roots.

This book is about a young man named Matt Barker; I say about, but it is more of a first-hand account through his many journal entries, audio recordings, police interrogations, newspaper articles, and online chat sessions. His friend, Lauren Bailey, has disappeared, which has set the rumor mill amok throughout their school and pushes Matt to find answers. Through these multiple story fragments, the realization that Matt is dealing with a supernatural being hits home quickly and the only choice he has is to go after Slender Man head-on.

I rather liked that this was written as an epistolary novel, which makes for quick and easy read. It truly brings our modern culture into focus, with use of text messages, phone apps, and reddit to bring multiple points of view into the story without having to give each individual character a thorough story arc. In other words, it gives just enough life to secondary characters to make it believable. To be honest, I’m sort of glad those secondary characters didn’t get a ton of the spotlight as most of this felt like Gossip Girl in a horror setting (and yes, my wife watches Gossip Girl so I’m aware of what it is). Rich teens, richer parents, and gossip being spread like butter on toast. All that being said, Matt’s audio recordings had me eating every bit of this book. The author does a phenomenal job inserting raw emotion/fear into each and every minute of the recordings, perfectly capturing the emotional, and physical, toll SM has on Matt.

Those that are looking for a novel that is all about Slender Man won’t find it here. Those that are looking for a tie-in novel with the movie(s) are also sadly mistaken. But if you want a novel that will chill you right down to the marrow, leaving you gasping for breathe, its perfect.

Though it was quite a slow-burn, slogging a bit in the beginning until all of the supernatural elements culminate into a super creepy, goosebump-inducing ending, it makes for a fantastic Halloween read. It probably isn’t enough to have you keeping the lights on at night, but it’ll make you think twice about camping out in the woods.

A figure that has not only inspired endless urban legends and internet myths but also even a true life crime, Slender Man has become the modern boogeyman. Since his inception at the hands of creepypasta authors online, he has grown in popularity, fans bringing about new versions of his unsettling tales, documentaries and even books.

Just recently I read Slender Man by Anonymous (the book itself, released by Harper Voyager, lists the author inside the paperback only as ‘ Mythology Entertainment .’ The cover itself attributes the book to no one.) From the outset, readers of this book know nothing about the writer – nothing of his or her background, age or name. This in itself helps to lend the book a kind of authenticity, which is important considering it isn’t told in a traditional style, but is instead packed full of emails, blog posts, texts, chat room screencaps, diary entries and police transcripts.

I love books that use multiple media forms in this way for storytelling. I used something similar myself in my novella, The Redwood Lodge Investigation . I find this style in fiction reminds me of found-footage films; something raw and gritty and open wide with the possibility that what you are viewing could really be true. Slender Man uses this technique and does it well, for it uses all of these different styles and mediums yet manages to still keep the reader engaged with the central story.

The story itself is simple: a young girl at school goes missing and her friend, Matt Barker, starts to have nightmares and visions soon after. Clues begin to mount and he soon starts to wonder if something supernatural is involved in his friend’s disappearance – specifically, Slender Man. Matt Barker begins to email friends, make posts on Reddit, talks to his therapist and even writes short stories (all of which appear within the book). The story is Matt Barker’s journey to discovering who and what Slender Man is – and whether his friend is missing due to the legendary character.

All in all, I loved it. I read the book in just a few days because I found the style really engaging and easy to read. I loved the chop-and-change way that the reader is taken into the mind of the character through diary entries and emails to friends, and I soon felt as if I was a character in the story myself, witnessing all of the personal insights that were unfolding as he did.

The story was creepy, too. I liked the use of the shadowy imagery and the descriptions of forests, nightmares and visions. I enjoyed the way the author made Slender Man feel like a real being, something to be taken seriously – something to be feared. I won’t mention any spoilers for readers who are yet to discover this book, but I will say I found the ending satisfying – because I like dark and creepy endings.

I rate Slender Man highly. Although I could easily imagine an YA audience enjoying this because it isn’t graphic, I found it creepy enough to engage with and found it a solid piece of storytelling.

Slender Man: Harper Voyager’s haunting new book is ghastly good

Slender Man is an epistolary novel following the journal entries of Matt Barker as he seeks to discover the truth about the mysterious disappearance of Lauren Bailey.

One of the most compelling aspects of the Slender Man story is the nature of his creation. It’s not possible to tell a story about Slender Man without allowing form for meta-commentary. He originated back in 2009 in an online horror thread and has since taken on a life of his own. What makes Slender Man so scary is that in every piece of fictional media about him, he is summoned by people interacting with him in online forums – i.e. the place he was originated in real life.

All of this took a surreal, horrifying turn in 2014 when Slender Man served as the basis for a stabbing in Waukesha, Wisconsin . Two young girls stabbed their classmate because they believed they would be murdered by Slender Man if they did not.

Since then, there has been countless television episodes based on Slender Man, such as Lost Girl , Law & Order: SVU , and Supernatural . This past summer, a film was released sharing the same name, although it didn’t have much to do with the murder and featured an original story (although still sharing similar traits, such as the summoning of him due to an internet-based ritual and video).

That said, while Slender Man has certainly established his place in the hall of iconic horror figures, the movie did not perform well critically or at the box office . I think some aspects of the legend tend to lend itself to parody and therefore can be difficult to take seriously.

That’s why I found the upcoming Harpers Voyager (an imprint of HarpersCollins Publisher) a breath of fresh air for the monster.

“Slender Man” is an epistolary novel, it is told through Matt Barker’s journal entries, voice recordings, texts, emails, and police interviews with various characters. It’s a fast, addicting read about a Manhattan high school where one of the girls goes missing.

The girl, Lauren Bailey, was your stereotypical popular girl – on the outside – but she had a dark side, one that Matt embraced and allowed her an outlet for. Due to their friendship, Matt becomes a central suspect in the investigation and decides to take matters into his own hands when he is lead to believe her disappearance may be more sinister than anyone could have anticipated.

One thing I really appreciated about the novel’s approach is Slender Man is not overused, but his impact is felt. We get to experience more of the psychological and mental effects, making the scares more subtle as they creep up on you rather than jump out.

It’s a haunting story, one that will stay with you long after you finish the book. Even after I’d completed it and moved on to write my review, I couldn’t help but feel as if something was watching me too.
