Over 434 senior players from 27 Local Tours competed in the 2023 Senior National Championship!
Hilton head island, s.c. – this year’s tournament marked the 25th anniversary of the senior amateur tour. in all, 434 players competed in the two-day event and each one of our 27 local tours was represented. in the championship flight , chad frank won his first senior national championship, but he is no stranger to being a national champion since he earned the title in 2007 as the golfweek amateur tour champion. frank opened the 2023 tournament at golden bear with a three-under-par round of 69 and a two-shot lead over bill shufelt and don o’malley. the players all went to oyster reef for the second day to determine our 2023 senior national champion. going into the back nine trent gregory , bill shufelt , tony burbridge and ernie watson all put pressure on chad frank . frank stood on the 17th tee box with a comfortable lead until he double bogied the hole and shufelt only trailed by one shot. shufelt hit first and piped it right down the eighteenth fairway while frank hit his ball right and landed almost out of bounds under a bunch of trees. frank punched out and landed about 70 yards from the green while shufelt hit it on the green about 25 feet away for birdie. frank then hit the shot of the day going from 70 yards away to about 5 feet. shufelt rolled his putt and just missed on the low side before he tapped in for par. despite the pressure, frank found the cup and completed the amazing up and down for the victory. congratulations to all that battled on the back nine before we crowned chad frank with his first senior national championship., chad frank , dowless, fowler and averett were either tied or held the lead outright. in the end, on the final hole of the round, dowless finally won and earned bragging rights. fowler fired a 75 losing by one stroke while averett posted a 76 and lost by just two shots. dowless now has the pleasure of being the 2023 a flight senior national champion., mike dowless , eastern, nc (75-73—148) ronnie fowler , TORONTO, ONTARIO - JUNE 05: (L-R) Eliza Enman-McDaniel, Kylie Miller, Jordan Miller, and Leandra ... [+] Earl of The Beaches accept an award during the iHeartRadio & Billboard Canada Women in Music event at Bell Media Studios on June 05, 2024 in Toronto, Ontario. (Photo by Mathew Tsang/Getty Images)
It’s been an amazing year for Toronto’s The Beaches, the quartet who went from clubs to opening for The Rolling Stones. What was the key to their transition from playing for a thousand people to 80,000? Blaming an ex.
The group found themselves with a viral smash in “Blame Brett.” Just as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young did with “Our House” and Hall & Oates did with “Sara Smile,” The Beaches found that a song about a specific person can become a global hit by tapping into a universal feeling, in this case that everybody has an ex they loathe.
The song took The Beaches to the verge of rock stardom, but as Leandra Earl and Kylie Miller tell me, their new songs, including the just released “Jocelyn,” are looking ahead instead of the past. I spoke with the two about the weirdness of fame, the future and beer.
Steve Baltin: Are there artists that spoke to you when you were coming up that made you feel represented and included?
Leandra Earl: Definitely, even before I knew anything about myself and we all agree with this is when we were kids, Avril Lavigne was a huge influence for us because she wasn't a regular pop star. I was a little tomboy when I was like eight years old. And I didn't really look up to like the Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. I love their music, but I didn't see myself represented until I saw Avril Lavigne come out with like camo pants, a guitar, and didn't really care what anyone thought. And that was like a rock star persona for me as a child.
Kylie Miller: Then another thing that I think was really big for you is Tegan And Sara, they released a book called High School , which you read when we were on tour. Not to speak for you, but I know that that really did mimic your experience coming out and like misunderstood feelings and all that stuff and navigating your way through. That book was really amazing. And we became friends with them and been able to talk about that with them a little bit.

Baltin: Do you see a big scene in Toronto? Is it very influential to you?
Earl: Yeah, absolutely. Toronto’s music scene has always been an influential part of our band. We grew up watching this movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World . It's based on a book, but basically it goes and they play in all these different music venues, like midsize rooms that unfortunately a lot of them are disappearing, which is really s**tty for a lot of up-and-coming bands. But we used to go to like all the city festivals when we would play them and go see a bunch of bands. I think growing up in that experience and having such a strong Canadian music culture definitely benefited us in so many ways.
Miller: Yeah. I feel like we spent a lot of our nights out drinking, but at venues and that's where we would hang out when we first started the band or when I first joined. And we had so many friends in bands where we just go and support each other's shows. And now we've like come up together, like Valley, like we're both just on this path together. It's so great to see our friends from Toronto doing big things.
Baltin: I love the fact that you said you came up drinking. So what was the drinking that got you guys going?
Earl: We've always been really big beer drinkers, to be honest. Like yesterday, we didn't go into a restaurant because they didn't have pints. I'd say honestly, beer probably like Coors Light is probably like our most bonding drink.
Miller: Another favorite part about touring other than playing shows is trying local lagers. Like, you found a good Swiss one today.
Earl: I found a great Swiss lager today and had it by the river after my lake swim.
Baltin: Were there songs on this record that surprised you quite a bit?
Miller: Yeah, for sure. I think “Blame Brett” and the response to “Blame Brett” has really taken us all by storm. I think we came up with that idea as a joke, and we didn't even know if we were going to end up releasing it cause we didn't know if it would get a bad rep. Jordan didn't know if she was comfortable with releasing it since her breakup with Brett was so fresh. But we decided to, we took a chance on it, and that song came together so quickly, like you were saying. We just nailed the tone. Leander came up with her lead guitar riff, and the song was written in probably five hours, which is kind of unusual to have happen.
Earl: Yeah, I think for us, Jordan was going through such a hard time in her breakup, so all of her songs, she's being really vulnerable, and for us, we're just having fun writing riffs, which is why the songs sound kind of happy behind really sad lyrics. Then right after we finished writing it, Kylie and I both got dumped, so then the songs took on new meaning for us on stage, where I was like, “Well, I never even really listened to Jordan's heartbreak. I just let her write whatever and wrote some fun riffs, and now I'm feeling really sad on stage listening to these.”
Miller: Yeah, that happened to me too, for sure. But then on the bright side of things, also seeing people just get so fired up and hearing from the fans that this record has helped them with the breakup or helped them find a way to move on and get some clarity. It takes it full circle, and basically, it's not ours anymore, it's the world's, which is really nice.
Baltin: It is so interesting how a song about one specific person can become this anthem for everyone around the world, because everybody hears themselves in it, and everybody has an ex that they want to say f**k off to. Have you heard that from fans?
Miller: Yeah, completely. We also started doing this thing where we would wear these shirts on stage and put blame, Jordan would wear blame Brett, Leandra would wear blame Alex, who was her ex, I would wear blame Adam, who was my ex. Eliza didn't have anyone to blame cause she's been in a happy relationship for 10 years, which is great. But our fans started doing that with their exes too. Now it's just so interesting, every time we play a show, doesn't matter the country, even though there's a language barrier, everybody will have their own blame shirts, and it's become a cult Beaches thing that happens. So that's really cool to see.
Baltin: Have you heard from your exes on this?
Earl: Yeah, I'm best friends with my ex now, which is great. But I mean, even in the beginning when we first came up with the shirt, she was still cool with it.
Miller: Yeah, my ex, I think he liked it cause he thought he was going to get some more Instagram followers from it. So, I retired his name.
Baltin: Now that you've worn these shirts and blasted out your exes, do you find when you meet new people they're afraid they will be fodder for songs?
Miller: I don't think so. I think maybe that's more of an issue or it was an issue that went through Jordan's mind a little bit. Sometimes people are a little bit antagonistic about that song. But for the most part, I think everyone's kind of like, “F**k yeah, he did suck.”
Earl: I have a lot of girls that pulled up with signs that like want me to blame them, which means that they want me to date them and break up with them.
Baltin: You just put out “Takes One To Know One,” then “Jocelyn.” Do you see these songs as extensions of Blame My Ex or are they more the beginning of the next record?
Miller: It's the beginning of the next record, which we're really excited about. We don't feel that Blame My Ex , like at least the sound isn't done, but we feel like Blame My Ex is again focused on blaming someone else and going through a breakup. This next record, what we decided to do is take a look inward and it's all about self-reflection. Maybe we are the ones who need to be blamed a little bit here. “Takes One To Know One” is pretty much the antithesis of that, where God, you're a piece of work, “Takes One To Know One,” because you also have the same issues that your new partner does. “Jocelyn” is a song that we wrote about not really understanding how to cope with this newfound fame and not understanding why you're someone's idol now when you're not really doing that great.
Earl: Yeah, a lot of fans will look to us for answers for different things. And we're just people going through the same stuff for the first time, and we don't know anything more than the next person.
Miller: Yeah. So that's what we're focusing on now. We've written a bunch of songs and we're going to continue to write for the rest of the year, but we're hoping to put something out next year, which we're really excited about.
Baltin: I've talked about this with so many people. You have a hit album, and you don't even get to enjoy it because you're so in the midst of everything. Have there been moments for you where you're like this is really happening?
Miller: Yeah, I think our last our last American tour that we did before, there's like the before “Blame Brett” time, the after “Blame Brett” time where we could really notice the difference. I think the first time we all it heard all of us was Boston Calling last year. I think “Blame Brett” had just come out and just gone viral like the week before, which was also a new thing, like using TikTok is such a big platform to reach so many fans. So, that took off and we're like, “Oh, that's really cool to see online.” But we hadn't seen it at a show yet. I think we had like 40,000 people show up to see us because of the hype. Which was our biggest festival play. Then from there on, every show we would put on sale, it would just sell out and we'd upgrade venues and we're like, “Oh, this is what we've dreamt of. We've seen our favorite artists upgrade venues.” It felt so surreal.
