Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator

The game was ported by Sega to non-vector versions for several of the better known game systems and home computers of the time – namely the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Colecovision, Apple II, Atari 8-bit computer family, Commodore 64, TI-99/4A, and VIC-20. [1] The gameplay differed slightly from the arcade version in each translation.

Arcade cabinets [ ]

The arcade game was released in two versions. The standard "upright" game cabinet model was fashioned after similar games of the day, with standard screen and control layouts. In addition, a special " Captain's Chair " sit-down model was fashioned to simulate that on the bridge of the refit USS Enterprise as seen in the first three Star Trek films . Its controls were built into the chair in which the player sat, with the game screen situated in a separate console in front of the player. In both cases, the game included a rudimentary voice simulator which used Scotty 's voice to give you command, and Spock 's to welcome you aboard and announce entry into each sector. (Neither was the actual actor's voice, but a computerized impersonation.)

Upright cabinet version

Gameplay [ ]

Gameplay consisted of piloting the Enterprise through various space sectors which have starbases that are under attack by Klingon cruisers, mysterious alien anti-matter saucer ships and the Nomad probe. ( TOS : " The Changeling ") The player steers the ship by a rotary knob (situated either on the upright console's front or the sit-down chair's left-hand arm), while control for impulse , warp drive , phasers , and photon torpedoes are a set of four game buttons (next to the dial on the upright or on the right-hand arm of the sit-down's chair). The games creen is divided into three sections. The upper left shows the player's score as well as the ship's amount of shield energy (green line), photon torpedoes (red boxes) and warp energy (blue line). The upper right gives an overall view of the sector, including enemy ships and starbases (with which the ship can dock to re-energize shields, restock torpedoes, re-fuel the warp drive, and repair any damage suffered from attacks). The lower part of the screen shows a direct forward view (similar to the viewscreen on the Enterprise bridge ).

In-game screenshot

The player has only one ship to use, so if it is destroyed, the game is over. The ship can be attacked by the Klingon ships (either from disruptor fire or collision), by the anti-matter saucer (which drains the Enterprise 's warp power if it comes in contact with the ship), or by Nomad and the spacial mines he lays. Damage is first absorbed by the shields (shown in the upper right by a green oval surrounding the Enterprise ). When drained, an additional hit takes them offline. A further hit destroys the torpedo controls (and any torpedoes the player has). The next hit takes out the warp drive. One more hit destroys the ship entirely. Any and all damage can be repaired by docking with a starbase.

The game has forty "simulation levels" to play through. The format is usually five attack waves by Klingons and saucers, followed by an empty sector in which Nomad is laying mines.

In the Klingon levels, there are three versions of the Klingon cruiser: Red (which immediately target the starbases), Purple (which come after the Enterprise with disruptor fire), and White (which try to ram the Enterprise ). All three types can be destroyed by a single phaser or torpedo hit. (Further note: A Red Klingon ship turns Purple if its destroys the Starbase it fires on, and a Purple ship can turn White if you take too long to clear a sector.) The saucers can only be destroyed with a single phaser hit, as the antimatter in the torpedoes has no effect.

In the Nomad levels, Nomad must be destroyed before he can escape the sector. The mines he lays can be destroyed by phaser, torpedo, or collision, but their blast area can cause damage to the ship, so they are best either left alone or destroyed from a distance. Like the anti-matter saucers, Nomad can only be hit by phaser at close range (it is shielded from torpedo attack).

A Vectrex Arcade System game titled Star Trek: The Motion Picture came out about the same time, but only bears minor resemblance to this game in graphics or gameplay and was not a "port" or translation of this game.

Description official descriptions

Star Trek: Strategic Operations Simulator is an arcade action game where you take control of the Starship Enterprise. Your mission is to save the Federation from NOMAD! Before you get a chance at destroying NOMAD, you'll have to battle your way through ten levels (each consisting of multiple rounds). In each round you may encounter Klingon fighters, deadly anti-matter saucers, asteroid fields, and deadly meteors, all of which are capable of depleting the Enterprise's energy. The game ends when your energy supply has completely run out. To fight these dangers, the Enterprise is equipped with an unlimited supply of phasers and a limited supply of photon torpedoes. Each round also contains one or more starbases; if you dock at a starbase, some of your supplies (such as energy and torpedoes) will be replenished. The game is played from two points of view; the top of the screen contains a third person view of the Enterprise (along with the ship's gauges), and on the bottom of the screen is a first person point of view.

A decent attempt

The Good The multiple views are interesting The Bad The game is very slow and is just shooting enemeis. The Bottom Line A simple arcade game with some Star Trek visual touches.

Arcade · by Cube1701 (41) · 2023

Surprisingly faithful port of the Arcade Version.

The Good Given what system hardware it was written for it was a above average game.

The screen is divided into 3 critical areas. -Status Screen - Colored blocked indicate power, photons, and shields

-Short Range Scanner - This provides a tactical overview of the Enterprise, enemy targets and Starbases.

-Main view screen - This is where all the real action happens!

The game is divided into ten Sectors (different skill levels). Each Sector has six different rounds.

  • Klingon Encounter 4. Klingon Encounter
  • Klingon Encounter 5. Klingon Encounter
  • Asteroid Field or Meteor Shower 6. NOMAD

During the Klingon rounds, Klingon's will attempt to destroy both the Enterprise (you) and the Starbase. You should first destroy the Klingon's attacking the Starbase and if needed Dock with it to replenish your critical systems!

This really makes for some fan shmup action!

-Gameplay: Except for the voices found in the arcade version everything is here. -The graphics, the look of each level was superior to the Arcade Version

-What sound you heard was great and faithful to Star Trek

-Gameplay was rock solid and for it's time had a great immersive quality The Bad -Lack of music, this is very understandable given the limitations of the Atari 2600. I often wondered what the game would have looked like if it had been written for the Starpath Supercharger. The Bottom Line Arcade shoot em up. Multiple stages of arcade fun and your at the helm of the Mighty Starship Enterprise.

Star trek - mame.

To ensure that all the games you download here work as they are supposed , use them only with the recommended versions of MAME available directly from our website under the 'emulators'  tab. These are specially modified versions of the program, and more than 90 percent of the games won’t work at all if you use them with the regular MAME versions downloaded from elsewhere!

This game is tested and working perfectly with our emulator version MAMEui64-02 , you can download from section emulators .

NOTICE!!! I always check the game files myself before I put them on the website, to see whether they work or not. The basic idea behind this project is to provide people both with a working emulator and games they can run on it at the same time. Unlike some other sites that offer you hundreds of games but none of them really work, I can guarantee you that all the games presented here work like a charm. All you have to do is to use the correct version of MAME emulator, both of which are also available on our website . Whether the game is supposed to run under 32bit or 64bit MAME is always explicitely stated in the game’s description.

  A quick guide for you:

step 1: download the game and put the downloaded archive to the ‘roms’ folder within your MAME root directory step 2: after launching the emulator, press F5 to refresh the game database step 3: double click on the game’s title in the list to start the emulation

step 4: once the game starts, press ‘5’ on your keyboard (the one above your regular keys, not the one on the numpad) to activate the ‘coin trigger’ and then press ‘1’ (again, not on the numpad) to start ‘player one’ game. (note: these can be both remapped through the MAME settings tab, where you can also find mapping for the second player controls).

And since I spent my free time on this website, bringing you all these fully functional games, so that you too can have some retro themed fun, any comments will be much appreciated.

Have fun! Your Gbit.

  • Note: There is a thread at emuline forums that lists all the available compatible titles for TeknoParrot. This may help to detect the missing titles not mentioned in Tekno's official site or Patreon posts.

Digital Distribution Platforms

There are arcade video game network systems from several companies that allow arcade vendors to download a game into their cabinet, as opposed to just replacing the whole cabinet when they want a new game. TeknoParrot supports many games from the following digital distribution platforms:

  • ALL.Net P-ras MULTI ( Sega's network . Sega's digital distribution system for arcade games in Japan, utilizing the ALL.Net online service. Games mainly from Sega and Bandai Namco, sometimes third parties. Emulated since 1.60a .)
  • NESiCAxLive (Taito's network. Games from SNK, Cave, and Arc System Works. Emulated since 1.60a .)

TeknoParrot started its life as a closed-source project built by a few members of Teknogods and had an accompanying and highly successful Patreon account to support its continued development.

Since version 1.66 of TeknoParrot was released publicly in early September 2018 , the Teknogods team released a partially open-source version of the emulator to allow more people to contribute. These two pieces of software are called " OpenParrot " and " TeknoParrotUI " (GUI for Windows that works with both TeknoParrot and OpenParrot).

TeknoParrot has been changed to rolling update now. New features would be pushed to the built-in updater when available, and the TeknoParrot website only hosts a certain version and an online installer called TPBootStrapper. Users could either use TPBootStrapper to download and install the latest version or download a legacy version and then upgrade to the latest one via the built-in updater.

Connectivity

"TeknoParrot Online" is an included executable that creates and connects people to user-hosted lobbies.

Multi-JVS support enables up to 4 connected players to play a game together through TeknoParrot. It was first added to Virtua Tennis 4 in version 1.52c (May 30, 2018).

However, TeknoParrot lacks emulation for official cloud saving/multiplayer features presented some games such as All.Net (SEGA), NESYS (Taito), eAmusement (Konami), etc., which would cause some games to be unable to save progress (at least in an orthodox way), unlock features/contents, and/or join Internet multiplayer games.

TeknoParrot is now working on the emulation of the All.Net and Bana Passport server for some games, and this feature currently requires Patreon support.
