"Our ethos is in sensitive wildlife observation without disturbing natural habitat"
The mission on this trip is to observe Common Harbour Seals, thus making our Secret Seal Safari the most popular tour with families of all ages. Named by the BBC wildlife film crew in amazement at finding seals in this location when filming 'BBC Autumn Watch. Accidental Nature - Secret Seals of the South East'.
Dover Sea Safari does not just whizz you across Pegwell Bay. We bring you up under the iconic White Cliffs of Dover and along the breathtaking White Cliffs Country coastline.
Upon reaching Walmer, we head North. Passing Deal and taking in a close view of Deal Pier. Onward through to Sandwich Bay, entering the mouth of the River Stour through Pegwell Bay.
The lovely Pegwell Bay is a large nature reserve, known for its migrating wading birds and wildfowl, plenty of time for a bit of spotting if you'd like to bring your binoculars.
It’s here we find our 'Secret' Seal colony.
Engines off and drifting by in silence you can observe their natural inquisitiveness towards people while basking on the river bank and popping up around the boat for a good look at us.
After about 20 mins viewing we return with a thrilling blast back to Dover Marina (weather permitting).

We may be heading towards the end of the summer period, but there’s still a good amount of time left to fit in some exciting days out in Kent. Our county boasts plenty of amazing experiences to get stuck into, from exploring historic landmarks or visiting one of our brilliant zoos to peaceful strolls through gorgeous gardens .
If you like your days out to be accompanied by some incredible wildlife, then there’s one river trip you simply must add to that summer holidays bucket list. River Runner offers a number of boat tours along the Kent coast and the county’s river network, making for some unforgettable experiences.
One of the most popular options that the River Runner offers is its seal trips, giving guests a fantastic opportunity to see these amazing animals in their natural habitat. Seal trips can be taken from both Ramsgate and Sandwich , with each providing an amazingly unique day out on the water.
Guests are invited to hop aboard the eight metre, family-friendly and spacious catamaran ‘River Runner’, which accommodates up to 12 passengers. The Sandwich seal trips last for approximately one hour and 45 minutes, departing from Sandwich Quay.

The River Runner will travel down the River Stour for around 45 minutes, taking in all of its hidden history along the way. There is plenty of wildlife to be seen while travelling along the Stour, such as herons, little egret, kingfishers, oystercatchers and more.
Then, once the boat reaches the entrance of the river at the edge of Pegwell Nature Reserve, guests will get the chance to see the active residential seal colony, made up of both common and grey seals. Having been established here around 30 years ago, the colony is a truly breathtaking sight to behold, with the river tour offering a view of the seals unlike any other.
Guests will be given 15 minutes to admire the amazing creatures and capture some picturesque views of the coastline before heading back up the river to Sandwich Quay. Meanwhile, the Ramsgate seal trips take around an hour and 20 minutes, departing from the west pier at Ramsgate Harbour.
The River Runner will depart from the Royal Harbour where a variety of impressive boats can be seen such as life boats, pilot boats, fishing boats and more. Then, the tour will travel across the bay toward Shellness Point, providing ample opportunity to take in the stunning scenery and local wildlife on the way.
The trip will then again head to the edge of Pegwell Nature Reserve, giving participants 20 minutes to admire the amazing seal colony before heading back to Ramsgate Harbour. River Runner also offers tours of the Thanet coastline, taking in the sights of Ramsgate, Dumpton, Broadstairs and much more.
Alongside this, there is the option of trips to the Richborough Roman Fort for a day out full of fascinating history. Tickets for the seal trips cost £25 each and children under the age of three go for free. Further information around the seal trips and the other River Runner experiences can be found on the website here .

Monomoy Island Excursion
Monomoy Island Excursions is a family owned and operated business in Harwich Port, Cape Cod, Massachussets. For over 10 years we’ve been taking people out to Monomoy , a barrier island and wildlife refuge off the coast of Chatham,MA, where thousands of seals have made their home.
While seals are the main attraction on our cruise, there is a lot more to see! We visit Wychmere Harbor , in Harwich Port. This is one of the most scenic harbors on the Cape! We also stop in to Stage Harbor in Chatham, where you get a close up view of Stage Harbor Lighthouse and see Chatham Lighthouse . Not to mention the combination of large yachts, small sailboats, and various fishing boats that fill each harbor. You get a real taste of the sea life on Nantucket Sound .
We run seal cruises several times a day, generally lasting 1 1/2 hours. While we see lots of harbor seals and gray seals, Monomoy is also home to hundreds of species of birds and other wildlife. There is a trained naturalist on board who narrates the tour and can answer questions about the wildlife as well as the history of the island and the historic Monomoy Lighthouse .

The most famous local sandwich from every state
Posted: June 2, 2024 | Last updated: June 2, 2024
- Each state has its own signature sandwich, from grilled cheese to something called a Jucy Lucy.
- Indiana claims to have the best pork-tenderloin sandwich in the nation.
- Illinois is known for the Horseshoe, an open-face sandwich topped with fries and cheese sauce.
Nothing hits the spot quite like a local sandwich .
Plus, thanks to their relative affordability in a time where inflation has driven up the price of seemingly everything, sandwiches could be the restaurant menu item to order. We researched the most famous local sandwiches in every state , and while some may be up for debate, every sandwich on this list is at least worth trying.
These are America's most famous local sandwiches, from a classic grilled cheese to something called a Horseshoe.
ALABAMA: A chicken sandwich with white barbecue sauce
Alabama's famous white barbecue sauce is creamy and tangy, made with mayonnaise, vinegar, salt, and ground black pepper.
ALASKA: A wild Alaskan salmon sandwich
Alaska's salmon is said to be the freshest, pinkest salmon around.
ARIZONA: Frybread tacos
Also known as "Navajo tacos," these are popular in Arizona. The fried dough is topped with traditional taco fillings like meat, beans, and cheese.
ARKANSAS: A deep-fried catfish sandwich
Caught locally and tucked between two buttered buns, the deep-fried catfish sandwich is best paired with a side of fries and slaw.
CALIFORNIA: An avocado club sandwich
Though the famed French Dip came out of this sunny state, it's best known for its avocados. Try one of California's fresh avocado club sandwiches to see why.
COLORADO: A Denver sandwich
You've heard of the Denver omelet, but have you heard of the Denver sandwich? It's a traditional Denver omelet filled with diced ham, onions, and green bell peppers, and then stuck between pieces of toast. Extra points if you add ham and hash browns.
CONNECTICUT: A Connecticut hamburger
Connecticut is known for its non-traditional hamburgers, which are served on white toast with a choice of onion, tomato, or cheese, but no condiments. Try one at Louis' Lunch in New Haven.
DELAWARE: A soft-shell fried crab sandwich
Anyone visiting this seafood-obsessed state should try a soft-shell fried crab sandwich topped with coleslaw and leafy greens.
FLORIDA: A Cuban sandwich
The sunshine state is known for its Cuban sandwich with generous portions of ham, roasted pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard, all on two slices of Cuban bread.
GEORGIA: A fried-chicken sandwich
Those visiting Georgia — the original home of Chick-fil-A — should partake in a classic fried-chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and spicy mayo.
HAWAII: A Kālua-style pork sandwich
Kālua-style pork is common fare at most luaus, but the slow-roasted and shredded meat is also amazing on sandwiches. Try yours with pineapple coleslaw for an extra Hawaiian punch.
IDAHO: The "Meat Your Maker" sandwich
The Best Sandwich Shack in Idaho really lives up to its name. Locals swear by the "Meat Your Maker" — a combo of steak, Italian sausage, bacon, and more.
ILLINOIS: A Horseshoe sandwich
Illinois is known for an open-faced sandwich called the Horseshoe, made with thick-sliced toasted bread, your choice of meat, and topped with french fries and a secret cheese sauce.
INDIANA: A Hoosier sandwich
Indiana claims to have the best pork tenderloin in the nation. Put it to the test by tasting a Hoosier sandwich, or a breaded tenderloin on bread. Purists insist on trying it with only a few dill pickles and some mustard, but you can also get it with lettuce, tomato, and other fixings.
IOWA: A Tavern or "loose meat" sandwich
This state is home to the tavern or "loose meat" sandwich. It's made with unseasoned ground beef, sauteed onions, and sometimes topped with pickles, ketchup, or mustard on a bun.
KANSAS: "Runza" or "bierocks"
"Runza" or "bierocks" are a bun-shaped bread pocket filled with beef, cabbage or sauerkraut, onions, and seasonings. The recipe was spread by German immigrants to the Midwest.
KENTUCKY: A Hot Brown sandwich
The Hot Brown sandwich originated at the Brown Hotel in Louisville in 1926. The open-faced sandwich with turkey and bacon is covered in cheesy Mornay sauce, and then baked or broiled until the sauce begins to brown.
LOUISIANA: A po' boy
The po' boy sandwich is one of Louisiana's most iconic eats. The classic sub is made with French bread and roast beef or fried seafood. A "dressed" po' boy has lettuce, tomato, pickles, and mayonnaise with optional onions and hot or regular mustard.
MAINE: A lobster roll
What else would you order in Maine but a classic lobster roll? Served on a lightly grilled bun and filled with steamed and buttered lobster, these sandwiches taste like summer.
MARYLAND: A crab-cake sandwich
You can find some of America's freshest crabs in Maryland. Try a crab-cake sandwich on a buttered bun with lettuce, tomato, and onion.
MASSACHUSETTS: A Fluffernutter
If you've never tried the Fluffernutter sammie, you're missing out. It's made with soft white bread topped with peanut butter and marshmallow Fluff, which was invented by Archibald Query of Somerville, Massachusetts.
MICHIGAN: A corned-beef sandwich
Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor is known for its corned beef sandwiches, especially the Oswald's Mile High, which is made with corned beef and yellow mustard on double-baked, hand-sliced Jewish rye bread.
MINNESOTA: A Jucy Lucy
Though the war over which restaurant invented it continues, Minnesota is the official home of the Jucy Lucy — a burger cooked with cheese on the inside that oozes out at the first bite.
MISSISSIPPI: A pig-ear sandwich
A local staple in Jackson is a pig-ear sandwich. It's two tender pig ears served on a small bun with mustard, slaw, and hot sauce.
MISSOURI: A Gerber sandwich
Feast on Missouri's famous Gerber, an open-faced sandwich with French bread, garlic butter, ham, Provolone, and paprika, and then perfectly toasted.
MONTANA: A PB&J with huckleberry jam
Montana is known for its huckleberries, which grow in the wild during the summer and fall seasons. Try its famous huckleberry jam for a delicious PB&J.
NEBRASKA: A Reuben
The classic Reuben sandwich was supposedly invented by an Omaha grocer. It's made with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island dressing, and is best served on rye bread.
NEVADA: A Heart Attack Grill burger
Las Vegas' Heart Attack Grill is periodically in the news for its calorific burgers. Some variations contain five burger patties with bacon and, of course, a side of fries.
NEW HAMPSHIRE: A fried ham and cheese Monte Cristo drizzled with syrup
One of the proudest accomplishments for this state is its delicious maple syrup. Order a fried ham and cheese Monte Cristo drizzled with it for the ultimate breakfast sammie.
NEW JERSEY: A Jersey breakfast sandwich
Stop by any Garden State diner and try the signature Jersey breakfast sandwich. It's thick-cut Taylor ham (or pork roll) with egg and American cheese on a hard Kaiser roll or bagel.
NEW MEXICO: A green chile cheeseburger
A cheeseburger is one thing, but a green chile cheeseburger takes it to a whole other level. This state's signature vegetable adds a major kick to this classic American dish.
NEW YORK: A pastrami sandwich on rye
There's nothing more NYC than a pastrami sandwich from Katz's Delicatessen in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The famous deli, which opened its doors in 1888, is known as one of the city's oldest delis and arguably the most famous deli in the entire country .
The restaurant has been frequented by scores of celebrities and politicians over the years and was even featured in the classic 1989 romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally..." — Katz's is where the iconic "I'll have what she's having" scene took place.
NORTH CAROLINA: A pulled-pork sandwich
Just like Hawaii, one of North Carolina's best sandwiches is pulled pork, but make sure to smother it in a tangy, vinegar-based BBQ sauce.
NORTH DAKOTA: Smørbrød
This state's huge Scandinavian population love their Smørbrød, a classic open-faced sandwich commonly made with rye bread, roast beef, Gravlax (a type of salmon), butter, lettuce, Jarlsberg cheese, pickled herring, hard-boiled eggs, honey mustard, or cucumber.
OHIO: A Polish boy
Not to be confused with Louisiana's po' boy, Ohio's Polish boy is a sausage sandwich native to Cleveland. It has a link of kielbasa covered with a layer of french fries, barbecue or hot sauce, and coleslaw, all on a bun.
OKLAHOMA: A chicken-fried steak sandwich
What's better than chicken-fried steak? That same breaded and fried steak on a hamburger bun with your choice of condiments.
OREGON: A falafel pita
Portland is known for its delicious vegan food. Falafel pitas in particular are a popular choice, packed to the brim with veggies and hummus.
PENNSYLVANIA: A Philly cheesesteak
The state's most famous food by far is the classic Philly cheesesteak. Thinly cut steak handsomely topped with cheese on a roll is delicious by itself, but don't be afraid to add sautéed onions, peppers, mushrooms, mayonnaise, hot sauce, salt, pepper, or ketchup.
RHODE ISLAND: A Dynamite sandwich
This tiny state is home to a very big sandwich. The Dynamite, which hails from Woonsocket, is a sloppy Joe burger made with onions, bell peppers, and celery. Be careful — it is spicy.
SOUTH CAROLINA: A tuna melt
People say the tuna melt was born in 1965 in South Carolina at the Woolworth's lunch counter. Head there and see for yourself why this simple delicacy is a Charleston classic.
SOUTH DAKOTA: A walleye sandwich
South Dakota's walleye is next level, so it's no surprise that the state is known for its walleye sandwiches. When the flaky fish is fried to perfection, it will melt in your mouth.
TENNESSEE: A Fluffernutter
Sink your teeth into Elvis Presley's favorite sandwich, made with peanut butter, banana, and bacon. Just be careful — the mix of salty, sweet, and savory is highly addictive.
TEXAS: A brisket sandwich
Barbecue brisket is the national dish of Texas, so try yours on some hardy, homemade bread with or without onions and bell peppers.
UTAH: A pastrami burger
When in Utah, it's perfectly acceptable to dig into a burger topped with a quarter-pound of thin-sliced pastrami. "Pastrami burgers," which originated at Crown Burgers in Salt Lake City, are slathered with a Thousand Island-style sauce as well as tomatoes, shaved lettuce, and onions.
VERMONT: A Vermonter
The "Vermonter" takes advantage of its state's freshest ingredients, like turkey, ham, Vermont cheddar cheese, green apples, and honey mustard.
VIRGINIA: A grilled ham and cheese
There's almost nothing more classic than a grilled ham and cheese sandwich, and Virginia is known for its excellent cheeses and succulent ham.
WASHINGTON: Bánh mì
Seattle has a large Vietnamese community and is home to some of the best bánh mì sandwiches in America. The inexpensive staple is usually made with pate, bright, crunchy vegetable slaw, fish sauce, and sliced jalapeño pepper or fresh cilantro.
WASHINGTON, DC: A chili half-smoke
Stop into Ben's Chili Bowl and order a chili half-smoke, a half-pork, half-beef smoked sausage served on a warm steamed bun with mustard, onions, and spicy homemade chili sauce.
WEST VIRGINIA: An apple and turkey sandwich
Make a delicious apple and turkey sandwich with West Virginia's Golden Delicious apples. Cheese and apples sound like a weird combo, but it's worth it.
WISCONSIN: A sausage roll or brat bun
This Midwestern state has a large German immigrant population, so it's no surprise that its most famous sandwich contains classic bratwurst. Eat the sausage roll topped with mustard, sauerkraut, and cheese curds — another thing for which Wisconsin is well-known.
WYOMING: A bison meatball sandwich
Wide-open Wyoming is where the buffalo roam ... and occasionally appear on menus. Try a bison meatball sandwich when you're here to taste the state's most famous meat.

The sandwiches worth travelling for in NSW
The air might be chilly but it’s never a bad time to slap some food in between two bits of bread. And here is the sexiest sandwich in the country.

Americans lose it over ‘Goon of Fortune’
How restaurants plan to win over diners
If you think sandwiches are just for spring picnics, think again. The air might be chilly but it’s never a bad time to slap some food in between two bits of bread. Here are the sexiest sandwiches to double-hand now in NSW.
The chip butty at Splash, Petersham
A white bread sandwich stuffed with hot chips and smothered with old school curry gravy? It sounds like something straight out of a mouldy uni sharehouse, but the reality is almost criminally delicious.
Best of all, this cool kiosk sits right inside a green park so you can scoff it on the grass, lounge around for a bit in the winter sun and then go back for a Splice Shake for dessert.
The vego sandwich at Ol’ Mates Sandwich Shop, Earlwood
When was the last time you had a proper salad sandwich? A bad one is a soggy lump of wet cardboard glued together with lawn clippings.
A good one is a garden party in your mouth. The salad sando at this new Inner West sandwich slinger is the latter. It comes with all the expected greenery plus a secret weapon of tirokafteri: a spicy Greek red pepper and feta dip. I’d add fermented chilli for an extra two bucks but then I’d add fermented chilli to anything.
The Silverchair at Chiefly West, Newcastle
Named for Newcastle’s favourite ‘90s sons, the Silverchair is a rock and roll mix of three cheeses, relish, horseradish, pickles and truffle oil, served on a banging baguette.
That’s a lot of intense layers of flavour in one sandwich but frontman Daniel Johns is a pretty intense guy so it all checks out.
The fruit sandwich at Sandoitchi, Darlinghurst and Chatswood
If I had unlimited cash I’d probably order the Sandoitchi fruit sandwich every day just to admire the blushing prettiness of its geometrically-arranged strawberries and oranges, cut winningly on the cross-section and buffed with layers of fluffy yuzu whipped cream.
It’s more of a dessert than a sandwich but who cares about labels when something tastes and looks this good.
The prawn katsu sando at Bar Yuki, Milton
There’s been a bit of a seafood sando monopoly the NSW South Coast town of Milton for some time now, with sandwich shop Delly’s cornering the market with their widely-loved lobster brioche roll.
But there’s a new shellfish sheriff in town, with this neat little prawn sando from newcomer Bar Yuki. You can eat it in-house or takeaway, and there’s also a fat little pork version as well as a fried fish option that rock just as hard.
The chicken schnitzel at Kosta’s Takeaway, Rockdale, Rosebery and Circular Quay
Someone call the BOM! The chicken schnitzel on this gargantuan double-hander is so enormous it practically has its own weather system.
Fine, it’s also served on a bun rather than bread which helps trick the eye into thinking the schnitzel is girthier and thicker than it probably is but it’s still one hell of a meal. Again, this one comes with optimal fermented chilli (see also the Ol’ Mates Vego) which is never a bad idea.
The salt beef wagyu on rye at Baker Bleu, Double Bay
Chef Neil Perry describing sandwich construction sounds like a man of god reading a reverent Bible passage, such is his passion. Baker Bleu is next door to the famed foodman’s Margaret restaurant, and he is a partner in the biz alongside Melbourne’s Mike and Mia Russell.
It’s the fresh-baked rye caraway that shines brightest on this generous ‘wich (though you’d also do well to try their famous sourdough on something like their poached chicken or tuna options). The filling nods to a classic Reuben with its creamy Russian dressing and pickled onion.
The Mortabella at Dom Panino, Leichhardt
It’s hard to pick favourites at this Leichhardt panini shop but I go back to the Mortabella again and again.
The soft folds of pork are great but it’s the briney, salty blend of pistachio pesto and green olives blended in with gooey stracciatella that melts me every time.
The prawn sandwich at Paper Daisy, Cabarita Beach
More Coverage
Possibly the poshest entry on the list but no one ever said sandwiches can’t scrub up and look presentable when they want to.
This classic prawn and avo sando has been on the menu at the restaurant inside Halcyon House for years, and with good reason; it’s simply the perfect, fresh, seaside bar snack. Order yours with a chilled glass of white wine for a dash of ladies-who-lunch joie de vivre.

Take a closer look at 'The Beast,' the $1.5 million bulletproof presidential limousine used by Trump and Biden
- US presidents are driven in a heavily armored limousine nicknamed "The Beast."
- It features a secure communications system and fridge stocked with the president's blood type.
- Military cargo aircraft transport the presidential limousine for use abroad.
When US presidents aren't flying on Air Force One or taking helicopter trips in Marine One , they're driven around in a presidential limousine nicknamed "The Beast."
Weighing in at 20,000 pounds and outfitted with advanced security and communications systems, the newest model of "The Beast" debuted during the Trump administration in 2018.
Take a look inside the famous vehicle.
US presidents travel in a secure limousine nicknamed "The Beast."
US presidents rode Lincoln limousines for most of the 20th century until the 1980s, when the Reagan administration switched to Cadillacs.
The latest model of the presidential limousine was commissioned by the US Secret Service in 2014 and used for the first time in 2018 by President Donald Trump.
Designed to look like a longer version of a Cadillac XT6, the chassis of the car is actually that of a Chevrolet Kodiak truck produced by General Motors, NBC News reported. The vehicle weighs around 20,000 pounds and cost around $1.5 million to build.
The heavily armored vehicle is bulletproof, blast-resistant, and sealed to withstand biochemical attacks.
While details about the limousine's security measures remain classified, NBC News reported that the vehicle features a night-vision system, tear gas firing capabilities, and door handles that can be electrified to prevent intruders.
The windows are believed to be 3 inches thick and the vehicle's armor around 8 inches thick.
"The Beast" is also equipped with medical supplies, including a refrigerator stocked with the president's blood type.
The limousine's secure communications system is able to dispatch the launch codes for nuclear weapons.
The presidential seal appears throughout the design of the car.
The seal, featuring an eagle holding an olive branch and 13 arrows in its talons below a banner reading "E Pluribus Unum" (" Out of many, one"), appears on both the interior and exterior of the passenger door.
The limousine can seat up to seven people.
The interior features water bottle holders and plush leather seats. Previous presidential limousines have also included a fold-out desk, according to the US Secret Service .
"The Beast" travels with the president.
Presidential limousines are transported by military cargo aircraft, such as US Air Force C-17s, for use during the president's travels, according to the US Secret Service.
When abroad, the presidential limousine flies the American flag and the flag of the host country.
When Biden visited the UK in June 2021, the presidential limousine flew both the American flag and the Union Jack.
On Inauguration Day, Secret Service agents change the car's license plates as a new president takes power.
Some presidents have used the Washington, DC, "End Taxation Without Representation" license plates, while others have removed the slogan, Axios reported.
Accompanied by the presidential motorcade, "The Beast" remains an instantly recognizable symbol of the power of the presidency.
"It is safe to say that this car's security and coded communications systems make it the most technologically advanced protection vehicle in the world," the assistant director for the US Secret Service's Office of Protective Operations said of "The Beast, " according to the US Secret Service's official website.
