German-czech hospitality at its best.

This is our family's first time in Germany and this tour got us to places that we wouldn't have known we wanted to visit. Milan was the perfect guide: knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating of our group's varied needs. The Bastei Bridge is much more than I expected: remains of a medieval armory amid a stunning Sandstone gorge. And the boat ride was too short, but a bit of fairyland while it lasted. Lunch was delectable and generous. Thanks for a lovely day!

Great day trip of hiking.

If you like hiking, nature and history this tour is a perfect match. The tour takes about 10 hours and has some great hiking. There are three stops and an amazing place for lunch. The first stop is the Bastei bridge which is part of a phenomenal old fortified area built directly into the mountain. The other two stops were changed slightly due to the number of people who wanted to see different things but the alternate visits were totally worth it. The more is a hike down to the river followed by a boat trip on the river itself. Climbing back up from the river is a chore but I was rewarded with an amazing meal. The last stop is the Pravcicka gate which is a hike up to a natural rock formation which unbelievable views of the area.

Wow, such an incredible day! Since it is a smaller group, it is more relaxed and easier to stay together. Plenty of time is given at each place and the beauty of the landscapes is breathtaking. Lunch was very tasty and the vans were great with waters and snacks given. Our guide was a historian and provided great background. My girlfriend and I had the best day and it is a must do in Dresden we think! Be ready for quite a bit of hiking and hills though.

How We Visited Saxon Switzerland

Before diving into how you can visit this beautiful part of Germany, I thought I’d share our day trip so you can see some of the things you could do.

We visited Saxon Switzerland during our short stay in Dresden. We were there in late November, so we grabbed breakfast at a bakery on the way to the train station and caught an early train in order to make good use of the short day.

Breakfast on the train

After about 50 minutes on the train we got off in the village of Kurort Rathen and caught a ferry across the river. After a quick walk around the cute village on the other side of the river, and a hot drink to warm up, we started our hike up to Bastei Bridge.

ferry to Rathen

The hike was uphill but not terribly strenuous. The trails were well maintained, albeit a bit slippery here and there due to winter ice. We didn’t need hiking boots or anything like that, though I do recommend sturdy shoes.

Once at the top we enjoyed stunning views from various lookouts. The clouds rolled in just as we made it to the top.

After walking up another set of stairs we were at the famous Bastei Bridge. We spent a couple hours wandering all over this area so we could enjoy the view from every lookout. It just kept getting better and better! These photos are from late November…scroll down for photos from spring, summer and fall.

As late afternoon approached and we started losing daylight, we made our way to the nearby bus stop and hopped on the bus going to Pirna. From there we caught a train back to Dresden and arrived just after sunset.

We had so much fun on this day trip! It was relaxing, so lovely to spend time in nature, and a welcome change of pace from visiting cities.

Since it was winter, it was cold (especially towards the end of the day as the sun started setting) but still very enjoyable. We can’t wait to go back in the summer – more daylight means we’ll be able to stop for a meal, do more hiking or visit Königstein Fortress.

Getting to Saxon Switzerland

If you want to fly in, the nearest airport to Saxon Switzerland is the Dresden Airport. Berlin Brandenburg Airport is a couple hours away but is a much bigger airport. Other nearby airports are in Prague and Leipzig. From there, you can head on to the Saxon Switzerland National Park using public transportation or a rental car.

Deutsche Bahn easily connects Saxon Switzerland National Park with the rest of Germany with their regional and long-distance network. Regional trains leave from Dresden approximately every 30 minutes. They have stops at the towns of Pirna, Obervogelgesang, Stadt Wehlen, Kurort Rathen, Königstein and Bad Schandau, which are all nearby or part of the national park. A train ride from the city of Dresden takes around 50 minutes and will bring you close to many of the park’s entrances.

The fastest way to get to Saxon Switzerland by car is via the A17 or A4 freeways. The official park website recommends changing from the A4 to the A17 at the Dresden-West interchange. Then, continue on the B172 toward Bad Schandau from the Pirna exit. You can reach the villages of the Hintere Sächsische Schweiz via the A4 exit Radeberg, or from Dresden-Nord via the B6 direction Bautzen, turn towards Stolpen direction Bastei or via Sebnitz direction Bad Schandau or Hinterhermsdorf. An advantage of driving is that you’ll do less walking since you can leave your car directly in the parking spaces near the park entrance instead of walking from the train station.

Prefer a Guided Tour from Dresden?

If you don’t want to worry about public transportation or driving routes, you can opt to book a guided tour . This full-day guided tour includes return transportation from Dresden, an English-speaking private guide, entrance fees to sites in the itinerary (including the Bastei Bridge, Pravcicka Gate, and Kamenice Gorges), plus an a la carte lunch.

Another popular way to explore Saxon Switzerland is through boat rides in cruises and paddle steamers. Book this guided tour to cruise along the Dresden Elbe Valley, see beautiful castles, admire the impressive Bastei rock formation from a different perspective, and end with a visit to the iconic Königstein Fortress.

Many of the guided tours available are from Dresden since it’s the nearest major city. But if you’re willing to do a bit more traveling, it’s also a do-able day trip from Berlin . If you can stay in the area overnight or for a couple of days, even better.

What to See and Do in Saxon Switzerland

Saxon Switzerland National Park

Saxon Switzerland National Park

The Saxon Switzerland National Park is one of 16 German national parks. It’s a large natural area of around 710 square kilometers (274 square miles) in size. The park lies within the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge and adjoins the Bohemian Switzerland National Park by the Czech Republic border.

The park’s landscape is mostly made of woodland areas and rocky, deep canyons. Mountain forests are very common as well as deep gorges. Some natural landmarks include the Großer Winterberg mountain, one of the tallest points of Saxon Switzerland, the Lilienstein, a distinctive flat-top table mountain, and the Kamenice Gorge, a beautiful rocky ravine with the river Kamnitz flowing through it.

The national park is also home to many protected and endangered plant and animal species, such as the peregrine falcon and black stork.

The national park is also a great place for rock climbing, biking, and hiking. The park has a marked network of over 400 kilometers (250 miles) of hiking trails which visitors must strictly stick within.

The most popular trail is called “The Painter’s Way” ( Malswerg in German) which takes you to crowd favorite spots like the main rock formations. The rich variety of sandstone makes free climbing a popular option but climbers must be trained and follow certain rules to protect the cliffs.

Bastei Bridge and Bastei Rocks

The famous Bastei bridge is made up of stunning yet bizarre rock formations that stand over 600 feet over the Elbe river in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. It’s the best known landmark in the Saxon Switzerland National Park and for good reason! There is a wooden bridge that links several of the rocks, so visitors can walk over it and get the best views of the national park. I

t’s also highly visible from many of the most popular hiking trails within the park. The surrounding sandstone formations are also great for those experienced rock climbers.

Swedish Holes (Schwedenlöcher)

Very near the Bastei Bridge you’ll find the Swedish Holes. This is one of the small offshoot trails in the nearby area where you can get more panoramic views of the bridge. The Swedish Holes are narrow canyons enveloped by moss and surrounded by trickling small waterfalls. The hike itself is very manageable since you’ll find the path to be paved with a staircase on stacks of large rocks.

Königstein Fortress

Königstein Fortress

The Königstein Fortress is a hilltop fortress looking over the town of Königstein on the left bank of the River Elbe. It’s one of the largest hilltop fortifications in Europe and home to the oldest preserved barracks in Germany. It used to be a state prison but is now one of Saxony’s main attractions.

Climbing atop gives you spectacular views of key spots in the Saxon Switzerland National Park region as well as some of the small towns nearby. Inside the fortress, you can visit exhibits on royal history, join guided tours and hands-on activities, and even try out themed culinary experiences.

Bad Schandau

Bad Schandau

Heading to Bad Schandau after a full-day hike is one of the best ways to relax. The quiet spa town is home to many pools, saunas, and thermal baths. One of the most popular ones is a Tuscan spa called Toskana Therme, located right on the banks of the River Elbe. If you want to extend your day trip, then you’ll also find a variety of hotels and lodging options in the town.

Kurort Rathen

Another very small village nearby is Rathen, which actually occupies both sides of the river Elbe and has less than 500 inhabitants. It’s not only home to the Bastei rocks but some other tourist attractions like the local Amselgrund valley, where you can visit the Amselsee lake and the Amsel Falls. If you want to hike up to Bastei Bridge after taking the ferry across the river, you’ll find the trail here.

It’s also here that you’ll find the Rathen Open Air Stage, a natural stage in a deep valley that functions as an open-air theater with 2,000 seats. During summer weekends, you can watch shows varying from traditional performances, musicals, and classical plays.

Neurathen Castle

The Neurathen Castle is located near the Bastei rocks and the town of Rathen. At one point, it was the largest rock castle in the region, but only a few parts of the structure have survived. The remaining parts include rooms carved out of the rock, some passages, the cistern, and timber of the former wooden structure. It’s worth looking around and to also get even more unique vantage points of the bridge and park.

How Reach Saxon Switzerland from Berlin, Dresden, or Prague

Saxon Switzerland (or, Sächsische Schweiz in German) is a hilly region only 30 kilometers from Dresden, Germany. Here you can hike, camp, rock climb, all while looking over a sweeping view of the Elbe river. If you’ve come to Berlin or Dresden on a city trip, you might enjoy stopping by this beautiful natural park. In my opinion, it’s one of the the best day trips from Berlin because it can be explored in a day, or extended into a weekend trip if you prefer.

Here’s how to best reach Saxon Switzerland National Park from Berlin, Dresden, or Prague, as well as basic tips on entering the park, costs to expect, and things to do in Saxon Switzerland!

How to reach Saxon Switzerland

Saxon Switzerland is a popular place to visit from a number of different nearby locations. In all cases, the easiest thing you can do is to rent a car .

Renting a car in Germany for a single day will usually run you 50-70€ including just the minimum insurance, plus petrol of course. I personally visited the area by car, and found it to be rather convenient. You do still need to pay for parking, plus pay a small fee for the bus that takes you from the parking lot to the park entrance.

I highly recommend using Discover Cars find a rental car , because you can compare prices across different companies to get the best deal for your trip!

But in case you do not (or cannot) rent a car, you are in luck because there are many different tours that run to Saxon Switzerland, especially if you are starting in either Dresden or Prague.

Keep reading for tips on how to reach Saxon Switzerland National Park, including driving directions, how to reach it with public transit, and the best guided tours.

Reach Saxon Switzerland National Park from Dresden

Reach saxon switzerland national park from prague, reach saxon switzerland national park from berlin.

TIP - If you want to try it by public transit, make sure you look for directions to “The Bastion Bridge” rather than to the whole park. It will help get you to enter the correct side of the park.

By car – For the most part you’re going to be able to follow signs straight to the entrance. You’ll use the A17 and the B172, and the drive from Dresden takes about 45 minutes to traverse 47 kilometers.

By train – From the Dresden Hauptbahnhof (main station), you need to take the S1 to the Bad Schandau bus station. From there, you will need to take a ferry across the river, and then finally the bus to the entrance of the park from the parking lot.

By tour – There are several different guided tours available to go from Dresden to Saxon Switzerland National Park. It all depends on exactly what you want to see, as well as your budget. Be careful when picking a tour that it’s in a language you know! These are the only English-speaking tours to Saxon Switzerland from Dresden that I could find! Luckily both have good reviews 😉

By car – Driving from Prague takes about 1 1/2 hours to drive the 128 kilometers. Keep in mind, if you rent your car outside of the Czech Republic and drive across borders, you may need to pay extra for your rental car! You need to disclose it when renting the car.

By public transit – Reaching Saxon Switzerland from Prague requires you to take the train from Prague Central Station to the Bad Schandau National Park Bahnhof, and then transfer via two bussess. Otherwise, you can also simply take a train to Dresden, and then follow the direction from getting from Dresden to the park.

By tour – Again, there isn’t a huge selection when it comes to tours in English, but check out this Bohemia and Saxon Switzerland Full-Day Tour from Prague . It lasts a full 12 hours (remember, some of this is spent in the bus). They’ll even pick you up from your hotel!

Again, if you decide to look for alternative tours, do double-check that they are being conducted in a language you speak 😄

By car – You will primarily drive along the A13. The route is about 250 kilometers and takes 2 hours 47 minutes to drive by car. If possible, when coming from Berlin, I strongly recommend to turn it into a weekend trip and visit either Dresden or Prague as part of your itinerary!

By public transit – You can take a train from the Berlin Hauptbahnhof (main station) to the Dresden Hauptbahnhof (main station). The train ride lasts 3 hours if you get a direct train with no transfers. The cost is roughly 70-70€ for that part of the journey. From Dresden, you need to take the S1 to the Sebnitz Busbahnhof (bus station), and then another bus, the 241, to reach the national park.

By tour – Unfortunately there are no tours directly from Berlin to Saxon Switzerland. Given the complexity of using public transit in this case, I would recommend taking the train to Dresden, and then take the guided tour from Dresden .

Or, if you base yourself in Dresden, check out the directions below from Dresden to Saxon Switzerland.

Things to do in Saxon Switzerland

We built this trip in to a roadtrip to Prague , which you can reach in about two and a half hours from Berlin. On the way back, we stopped by the Saxon Switzerland, Bad Muskau (a UNESCO protected area near Poland), and our favorite spot in Germany, Kromlau Park .

What that means is that we didn’t have a lot of time to spend here, but we do try to spend our city trips with a stint in nature so it still did the job.

Felsenburg Neurathen

This is a small area inside of Saxon Switzerland near the Bastion Bridge that you can access for a small fee. It gives you some unique vantage points to look at the bridge compared to only the publicly accessible points. You made it all the way here, spend a couple bucks and walk around!

Bastei Brücke

The best known landmark in the Saxon Switzerland National Park is Bastei Brücke , known in English as “Bastion Bridge”. You can cross this bridge yourself and see it from many different angles from the different trails within the park. If you’re feeling up for it, you can even go rock climbing in this area on the neighboring sandstone rocks.

Alternatively, step onto the viewing platform that gives you a broad view of the Elbe River. It begins in the northern mountains of the Czech Republic, and flows through Germany towards the North Sea. Unfortunately the last time I was there, the main viewing platform was under construction, so you may want to check that out in advance. That said, I think we still got a pretty nice view over the river!

Tips for visiting Saxon Switzerland

  • Avoid German holidays , if you can - it’s a lot busier on weekends and during holidays, so coming just a few days before or after will give you a little more space.
  • Stay overnight - Coming first thing in the morning will guarantee you have the place all to yourself. There are several nearby towns, as well as a hotel right near the Bastei Brücke.
  • Visit during Autumn - the Autumn foliage in this region is really beautiful and photogenic! Summer is lovely, but the Autumn colors in Saxony are really something magical.

Saxon Switzerland prices

Saxon Switzerland is free to enter and has no opening or closing times. The only thing you should be aware of is that the bus that runs between the parking lot and the main rock formations, but you can also walk or bike this distance (3.5 kilometers).

  • Parking: Up to 3 hours (3€), more than 3 hours (5,50€)
  • Bus from parking to entrance: 2-3€ per person
  • Entrance fee: Free
  • Entrance to Felsenburg Neurathen: 2-3€ per person.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
