What is smart luggage?

linebreak

Smart luggage refers to suitcases with tech capabilities — typically USB ports to connect portable chargers for easy access. Some styles include their own portable chargers, while others require you to provide your own. Either way, you'll never have a dead phone while traveling. Make sure to bring a charging cable as no smart luggage picks include them. In addition to chargers, there are some newer suitcases with self-weighing options and tracking capabilities, but they have a much higher price tag and we've found they don't meet our standards for top performance. If those features are important to you, try a hand scale or a luggage tracker .

How we test smart luggage

linebreak

Our textile pros spend months reviewing luggage using standardized test methods and state-of-the-art lab equipment, then set up an obstacle course for users to try them out. In our latest evaluation, our pros tested 25 styles, leading to over 3,000 data points to analyze before making our selections . Here's how we rate the luggage in our evaluations:

✔️ Technology capabilities: Our pros try out each smart luggage's tech features and rate them for ease of use and accessibility.

✔️ Size and weight : Each piece of luggage is weighed when empty because we've found the online specs aren't always accurate. We then put the luggage in a 22" x 14"x 9" area to see if it complies with average airline carry-on restrictions.

✔️ Packing capabilities : Our analysts pack each piece of luggage using a standard load with real travel items like clothing, shoes, toiletries and more. In this process, we rate the ease of opening and closing the zippers, ease of accessing the compartments and how much of our load actually fits inside. We also make note of the important specifications, like the wheels, telescopic handle and any extra features. When the bag is fully packed, we practice rolling it over different surfaces and lifting it on and off countertops to get a feel of the handles.

✔️ Drop durability : Each carry-on is filled with a standard weight and loaded onto our drop tester, which releases the luggage from a three-foot height. The test is repeated in various directions, with damages and imperfections noted and scored throughout.

✔️ Abrasion resistance : Swatches of fabric are cut from softside luggage and loaded into our abrasion machine which rubs the fabric over an abrasive material 15,000 times before being graded for signs of wear.

✔️ Scratch resistance : A wire is dragged over hardside luggage material, then analysts visually assess scuffs and marks left behind.

✔️ Water resistance : Water is poured over the zipper. The amount of water that seeps through is measured by weighing blotting paper before and after it catches the liquid.

✔️ Consumer tests : Each carry-on case is filled with weight to mimic a real load, and a standard course is set up to cover a variety of surfaces and obstacles like going through twists and turns, lifting over curbs, transitioning to different flooring and more. Consumer testers then wheel the luggage through the course and rate the luggage on factors like ease of using the handles, comfort when pulling, sturdiness, wheel performance and maneuverability.

What to look for when shopping for the best smart luggage brands

First and foremost, smart luggage needs to be high quality and durable, because no tech features will be helpful if your suitcase doesn't last. Additionally, look for features that match your preferences.

✔️ Portable charger: Some smart luggage includes a portable charger while others do not and just have a USB port. If you already have a portable charger you like, you can usually save a few bucks by choosing a style without one included. Our picks with portable chargers feature high-quality chargers that are great to use with the suitcase and without.

✔️ Softside vs. hardside: In GH testing, we have had top performers in both hardside and softside luggage. Based on feedback from testers, it comes down to personal preference. When shopping for hardside luggage, look for durable materials like 100% polycarbonate. Our pros recommend softside luggage made out of nylon or polyester if you want a more affordable option.

✔️ Wheels: For rolling luggage, our testers prefer four 360° wheels for easy maneuverability. Two-wheel luggage only lets you push it forward and back, while four wheels give you the flexibility to push in all directions.

✔️ Handles: When shopping, look at all the handles on the suitcase. Check how easy it is to lift the telescopic handle to different heights. Some styles put padding on the handles, which can make it much more comfortable to use after a long day of traveling. Look for styles with top and side handles to make it easy to put in an overhead bin.

✔️ Weight: Avoid bulky styles and stick with lightweight carry-ons that weigh less than 8 to 10 pounds when empty.

Here, Senior Textiles Product Analyst Emma Seymour uses the abrasion machine to test the durability of the fabrics used to construct softside luggage.

Do airlines allow smart luggage?

Yes, smart luggage is allowed on airplanes, but there are limitations that depend on the airline. Airlines do not want lithium-powered portable chargers in the cargo hold, so they ask that all portable chargers are removed from the suitcase before boarding and carried in hand. Even if you plan on carrying on your bag, you must remove that battery before boarding in case your suitcase gets checked at the gate. Because of this rule, smart luggage with a built-in charger or battery that is not removable may not be allowed on the plane. If you are using your own personal portable charger, check that it meets FAA and TSA regulations . Always check the specific luggage rules and size limitations from the airline before flying to ensure a smooth airport experience.

I travelled with the new Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 – here's how it compares to top competitors

I think we all can agree: travelling is stressful. While I consider myself a frequent flier, finding my way to an airport on average two-to-three times each month, my biggest fear has been (and always will be) losing my luggage .

Luckily, it’s only happened maybe twice in my nearly decade of consistent travels, and if it’s happened to you as well, then you know it’s not a pleasant experience. You’re exhausted from your flight, and now you have to spend additional time filling out paperwork in hopes that the airline can successfully track down your rogue suitcase . Thankfully technology is ever-evolving, and we’ve entered the age of mobile tags . Samsung recently unveiled its latest model, the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2, and I decided to take it for a trial run.

What is the Galaxy SmartTag2?

The Galaxy SmartTag2 is a compact gadget that can easily be stored in a suitcase , backpack , or even attached to smaller items like a phone bag , thanks to the keyring feature on the interchangeable covers. It is currently only compatible with Samsung Galaxy Smartphones loaded with the SmartThings Find app and retails for £24.49.

A few weeks ago, I was off for an adventure to Barcelona to test-drive Volvo’s newest and smallest EV, the EX30. My home base is Charlotte’s airport and I had a layover in Philadelphia before reaching my final destination at BCN. Layovers, of course, can be tricky. Your checked luggage or bag is essentially passed through multiple hands and planes before you’re reunited. And, if your original flight is even slightly off schedule, you can run the risk of it not making it onto your subsequent flights, too.

In addition to the worry about my suitcase making it all the way to Barcelona, there was also the fact that I was carrying a backpack, too. Holding my laptop and other important gadgets, I had to be extra careful not to set it down and forget it during my nearly 10 hours of total travel time. All of this ran through my mind, so I decided to drop one Galaxy SmartTag2 in my suitcase and one in my backpack, just to be safe.

What are the pros?

Over the course of my five days in Spain, I frequently monitored the various location features of the tag. To give myself a more well-rounded view of how this tag held up, I also brought along my iPhone and an Apple AirTag (in my suitcase only) to compare the two.

One of the main things I loved about the SmartTag2 was the mapped-out location history. With just the click of a button in the SmartThings Find app, I could see each and every stop my items had made on any given day, not only listed out with exact addresses and coordinates but also pinpointed on a map. Additionally, there was a reverse feature that allowed me to find my Galaxy phone using my SmartTag2 with the press of the gadget’s center button. That definitely came in handy when I couldn’t find my phone in the hotel room, as it alerts the phone to beep.

More pros I loved about the Galaxy SmartTag2: it's sleek, and there are options for interchangeable silicone or rugged covers that come in several colours, as well as an extended battery life.

What are the cons?

It's an overall solid mobile tag, but there were some cons for me, personally. As an Apple product consumer, I did find it a little difficult to truly utilise all of the SmartTag2’s features. I had trouble turning on the “notify when lost” feature within the app, especially after putting my phone in airplane mode once abroad. For me, this has been one of my favourite features of the Apple AirTag , as it not only sends an alert to my phone but also to my Apple Watch. So, not being able to get this option to work on the Galaxy Smartphone was a bit frustrating. I even tried a smaller test once I returned home and could turn on the phone’s full service, but it still didn’t work for me.

Another minor con was the fact that the SmartThings Find app had to constantly be updated in order for the tags to work their best. I simply chalked that up to the fact that the devices were only introduced to the market in October 2023, and the software is still likely working out any bugs and kinks.

Final verdict?

In the end, I think the SmartTag2 served its general purpose. Since I am more comfortable with Apple products and technology, I’ll stick with the AirTag for now. However, if you are a Samsung Galaxy user, this product will suit you well. Either way, a mobile tag of some sort is definitely needed in today’s travel climate. After all, no one wants to be stressed trying to figure out where exactly their bags and luggage were last seen.

Pros : Apple Airtags are easy to pair within the Find My app, typically preloaded on all iPhones and other Apple devices. With the latest iOS update, you can share your tag’s location with up to five people, so even if your device is dead, there’s still someone else who is able to locate it. They can also now be engraved with your initials or a favourite emoji at no extra charge.real-time

Cons : You must replace or change out the battery around the one-year mark, they are not compatible with a MacBook just yet, and there’s no reverse feature to find a phone or iPad using the AirTag.

Pros: These Tiles come in a range of models, including slim, which can go inside a passport cover or wallet. Tiles can be paired with both Android and Apple devices by downloading the free accompanying app. It can also be paired with Amazon and Google Smart home products for even easier locating within your home. Most models come with a QR code that a person can scan to get in contact with you if they find your lost item.

Cons : According to reviews, the Tile app doesn’t map out the precise real-time location of items. Customers also share that the battery is not replaceable and tends to drain quicker than those of its competitors.

Samsara smart suitcase, one our best smart luggage picks

If you haven't tried any of the best smart luggage yet, then you're seriously missing out. Adding some smarts to your carry-on suitcases offers up the best upgrades since the day someone realized how invaluable 360-degree wheels and telescoping handles could be.

But those have nothing on the neat features you can get right now, including GPS locators, USB charging ports, motorized wheels, and even built-in measuring scales.  Most of them are TSA-approved too, though you will need to remove the batteries if you plan on checking them.

Smart luggage can be an incredibly versatile companion, especially if you regularly traveling by air. But picking up a piece of smart luggage can be a little daunting, and if you need some help we have you covered.

Based on our research, these are the best smart luggage options for every kind of traveller.

Away Travel Bigger Carry-On

1. Away Travel Bigger Carry-On

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Away is the cult favorite when it comes to smart luggage. Its sleek design, multiple size options and practical features made it the first suitcase to successfully break into the influencer market. We happen to thinks it's one of the best suitcases overall — the smart features just make it all that much better.

Founded by former Warby Parker executives, the Away delivers on design while keeping your devices charged for any adventure. The Bigger Carry-On's compression bag gives you maximum packing capacity while still fitting into overhead bins, but the battery pack pops out quickly if you need to check the bag. The exterior is scratch-resistant, but if there's any kind of issue with your Away, you're covered with a lifetime warranty.

Samsara Tag Smart Luggage

2. Samsara Tag Smart Carry On

The Samsara Tag Smart Carry On has a feature that distinguishes it from every other carry-on on this list: an included AirTag. Keeping tabs on your luggage is a major anxiety for many travelers, especially for those who are always on-the-go with multi-stop trips. Since this luggage comes with an AirTag (and a compartment designed to keep it safe) you're able to see when your suitcase is with you, and when it's been left behind.

These features require you to have an iPhone with the Find My app, which excludes Android users. Still, if you do have an iPhone, you'll find it easy to know when your luggage is at all times. And we'll bet it's a lot of luggage, since the Samsara Tag Smart Carry On has a huge capacity. You'll also have several color choices to choose from, including a hot pink limited-edition partnership with T-Mobile branded the Un-Carrier On. This model comes with a battery pack and wireless charging compartment for added smarts.

Horizn Studios M5 Cabin Luggage

3. Horizn Studios M5 Cabin Luggage

If you're looking for a smart suitcase that feels premium all-around, the Horizn Studios M5 Cabin Luggage is among our top picks. It's not the most affordable carry-on bag, but it's packed with convenient features. It sports a secure laptop sleeve in the front, so you can tuck in your computer and any additional items you might need to access quickly. Like some of the other bags on this list, the Horizn Studios M5 Cabin Luggage also offers an optional portable battery pack, complete with a USB-C and USB-A inputs for charging two devices at once.

It helps that the luggage is nice-looking, too. After testing it ourselves, we especially like how the wheels let it sit close to the ground. It's a sleek companion for all kinds of travel — and if you bundle it with check-in luggage, you'll save $50 on the set.

Andiamo Classic

4. The Andiamo Classico

For those who can pull off the retro-trunk aesthetic, the Andiamo Classico suitcase delivers with vibrant, high-gloss finishes and a zipper-less frame. The "royal sapphire" option especially catches our eye.

As for the luggage's smart features, the RFID-blocking technology pocket keeps sensitive materials safe. There's also a single USB port, but you'll need to supply your own removable battery. It's pretty heavy for a carry-on, and it's definitely not the smartest bag out there, but it certainly looks nice and reviewers seem to love it.

What reviewers say:

Forbes : "Now you can sparkle like the fanciest jet setters with the shiniest roller around."

Luggage Spots : "[It’s]  without a doubt one of the best pieces of luggage available on the market in recent years. It is now one of my most frequently used pieces and I love it. With a 100-day trial period, no harm in trying it out first!"

Arlo Skye Polycarbonate Carry-on

5. Arlo Skye The Frame Carry-on

Arlo Skye’s most popular carry-on is so for a reason: It's deceivingly lightweight, comes in five beautiful finishes, and has just enough smart features to make air travel easier.

Two TSA-approved combination locks effectively end the need for luggage zippers. You can charge your device on the go with the USB C and A Ports, and pop out the battery with a simple press when your bag gets gate-checked. Silent Run Lisof wheels make the bag a pleasant companion, while hand-stitched handles add the designer touch you'd expect from Louis Vuitton and Tumi alums. Great customer service is simply an added bonus.

Travel + Leisure: "I’ve never considered this a necessary luggage amenity, as someone who travels with a portable battery pack, but it is easier than unearthing a small battery from your backpack and potentially carries a higher charge capacity."

Forbes: "I tested it on a trip to Mexico and am reasonably confident I have never had such a big crush on a carry-on bag. Built of scratch-resistant aluminum with Florentine leather handles and trim, the 9.5-pound case sports a removable high-speed charger with two USB ports and purrs along on whisper-quiet Japanese quad wheels."

Whew! You've made it all the way across the globe. But have your toothbrush, pajamas, and running shoes made it, too? If you're a frequent traveler, it's easy to obsess over the logistics of getting your stuff clean, organized, and in good working condition upon arrival. Paying for a decent travel bag and a few useful accessories means buying a little peace of mind, especially when a few yards of zippers and some nylon are the only barriers between your precious belongings and the belly of an airliner.

Whether you're slinging a duffel into a car trunk for a weekend trip or packing for a whirlwind jaunt across Asia, we've got you covered. Need a bag for your passport or groceries? Don't forget to check out our other guides, like the Best Laptop Backpacks and the Best Recycled Bags , for more picks.

Updated April 2024: We reorganized this guide and added new picks, such as the Yeti Crossroads, Tom Bihn Aeronaut and Trinity, the Frame Carry-On Max, the Lo & Sons O.G. 2, the Camelbak A.T.P. 20, the Calpak Luka Duffel, and the Rux 70. We also updated the information on sizing and checked links and prices.

Best Carry-On for Most People

Look around any airport—if you see flight attendants or pilots, they will probably be rolling around a Travelpro suitcase. We like Travelpros because you get a lot of bang for your buck. They're durable, light, and not too expensive.

For only a little over $100, the Maxlite 5 is one of the more affordable Travelpro suitcases, and at 5.4 pounds, it's very light! The exterior toiletry pocket is a nice touch for when you go through security and need to take out your liquids, and the zippers are also quite strong and don't tend to get stuck. The wheels also rolled nicely on both the spinner and roll-aboard versions. Reviewer Matt Jancer did note that the aluminum handle extensions did sometimes stick and the main grab handle on the bag is only single-stitched, which may cause durability issues farther down the line. However, he has seen no issues yet. This probably the best bag you can get in the $100 to $150 price range.

Best Hard-Shell Carry-On

Away's business practices may have raised some eyebrows , but there's no denying that this company changed the travel market entirely. It has increased in price since we first tested it, but multiple WIRED staffers still use the classic Away hard-shell carry-on ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ) as their travel suitcase.

Hard-shell suitcases tend to be heavier. There's also not as much give in the case, so you may find it hard to squeeze in more items than in a soft-shell bag, bu they look a lot sleeker than their soft-shell counterparts and protect fragile items better. The Away weighs 7.5 pounds, which is pretty standard for a hard-shell carry-on. When I tested it, I liked that it had multiple height settings and that the polycarbonate shell wiped clean and stayed mostly scuff-free (it helped that my tester was in the darker navy color). Away's suitcases also come with a built-in TSA-approved combination lock, four spinner wheels capable of rotating 360 degrees, and an included laundry bag to keep dirty clothes separate from the rest of your stuff. The handle did feel a bit wobbly, though.

★ Alternatives: So many companies now offer a direct-to-consumer, stylish, hard-shell carry-on similar to the Away's. We've tried ones by Monos ($255) and July ($295) . Besides price, the differences are mostly negligible. I like July's aluminum bumpers, but they do add weight. The Monos's handle rolls out more smoothly, but the July's pebbled surface doesn't show scuffs as badly. Both have survived multiple cross-country trips, being checked as baggage, and being ridden on by two small children with no damage.

Paravel also offers an Aviator carry-on ($395) that touts itself as the world's first carbon-neutral carry-on; it has an interior lining made of recycled plastic bottles, a telescoping handle made of recycled aluminum, and vegan leather trim to help it stand out from all the plain black bags at the airport. Product reviewer Jaina Grey fell in love with its roomy interior and durable, anti-scuff hard-shell exterior.

Best Soft-Shell Carry-On

Yeti's coolers and cups are famous for being bomb-proof. The company recently launched a luggage line that's similarly overbuilt. The Yeti Crossroads 35L is a 22-inch roller bag that's carry-on size for most major airlines. It weighs 7.7 pounds, on par with soft-sided competitors of the same size.

I recently spent a week dragging the Crossroads up and down grimy subway station escalators, thumping it across cobblestones, and scrunching it into overfull overhead bins during a trip to London, Paris, and Brussels. The blue 700D nylon on the front and sides looks just as fresh as it did out of the box while the molded polycarbonate shell on the back has a few well-earned battle scratches. The two extra-large fixed wheels are rolling as smoothly as ever and hopped up curbs so well that I grew to favor them over smaller spinner wheels. The Crossroads has a half-dozen well-placed pockets and sturdy zippers that didn't give me any anxiety even as I tugged them hard while smooshing down to fit souvenirs into a carry-on with 8 days of clothing. —Martin Cizmar

Best Bag for a Lifetime

Do you only want to buy one suitcase and never think about it, ever again? Briggs & Riley is one of the few companies with a lifetime unlimited warranty. I bought a Briggs & Riley carry-on as my first and only post-college purchase. Right now, it has lasted over 20 years. Periodically, I bring it into the one Briggs & Riley-approved dealership in my town to get a zipper pull put back on, and it's fixed for free in a few days. Its components are top-of-the-line. The face fabric is a heavy-duty ballistic nylon that’s water-repellent and abrasion-resistant. After having been dragged all over the globe, from the Philippines to Turkey to Iceland, the gleaming red is just as bright.

The low-profile wheels nor handles have never broken. The grab handles are also luxuriously smooth and padded, and there's an interior folding garment bag for my husband's suits. The only downside is that at 9.3 pounds, it’s pretty heavy.

★ Alternatives: If you need an absolutely bomber-tough rolling suitcase and don't mind its 9.6-pound weight, the Pro Front-Access Carry ($799) will stand up to more abuse than most rolling bags, with its aluminum frame and 70-percent-recycled polycarbonate body. WIRED reviewer Chris Haslam says it's his favorite rolling bag in years. Jancer also likes Travelpro's Platinum Elite carry-on ($315) , which he calls one of the most high-end polycarbonate bags on the market.

samsung travel suitcase

Best Backpack

When I reviewed the Cotopaxi Allpa in 2018 ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ), it had only recently launched. Now, a half-dozen years later, it is one of the most popular travel backpacks that I see online and in airports all over the world. It's a combination of a camping backpack, a suitcase, and a soft, frameless duffel. You can splay it open like a sandwich to pack it easily; access items through a side zip; put it on your backpack and secure its weight with a sternum strap; or squash or stomp it into any overhead compartment or corner of your car trunk. The use case for this bag is extremely specific—the same people who are bopping around Thailand for several weeks in one backpack are not the same people trying to look professional at a work conference. But it is sturdy and comfortable.

★ Alternative: I took the Ekster Packable Duffel ($250) on several weekend trips this spring, and found that it more than upheld its claims of being built for “smoother journeys, on and off the grid.” This travel bag converts from a backpack to a duffel, with two separate compartments that also splay open for easier packing. The 600-denier exterior and water-resistant zippers are so sturdy that when we ran out of space in the car, we lashed it to the roof rack with surf straps and drove for hours in the rain. It, and its contents, remained pristine.

Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 bag

Best Convertible Bag

Every serious traveler knows the name of Seattle-based Tom Bihn, manufacturer of bomber bags that will last you a lifetime. The Aeronaut 45 is the classic Tom Bihn convertible carry-on, which the size of the maximum allowable carryon bag on a plane.

You get everything from a Tom Bihn bag that you pay for. It’s made of incredibly sturdy 1050 denier ballistic nylon, with bombproof YKK zippers. It has both hidden backpack straps and an extremely comfortable cross-body strap. This is commerce director Martin Cizmar's bag, and he's tossed it around and lugged it down rough streets and through crowds where roller bags are a liability. He owns two and the first lasted for more than a decade. This is the bag that both he and I would use, if we didn't have to constantly test other bags.

Small bag with several zippers 2 handles and 1 strap

Best Personal Item

Some airlines are not content with charging you extra for checking a bag and now charge you for overhead bin space . The Tom Bihn Trinity ( 7/10, WIRED Recommends ) addresses that problem by providing a space for you to pack everything you need while still fitting underneath the seat in front of you. As the name suggests, it has three main compartments and three ways to carry—either as a briefcase with padded grab handles, a backpack, or as a shoulder bag with two attachment points.

It has three main compartments which can be arranged to your liking; for example, on one of the side compartments, you can zip a water bottle holder into place or unzip it for more room. It wasn't quite as versatile as I expected; I found that I prefer a small duffel with one main compartment that I can organize as I like. However, it does fit under the seat in front of me, even with clothes, laptop, and four (four!) hardcover books that I somehow stuffed inside it.

Lo Sons OG bag

Best Work Bag

I've been traveling a lot for work and for family reasons in the past few months, and the bag I prefer for my personal item is the Lo & Sons O.G. 2, which is the larger version of the brand's Nouvelle purse ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ). It comes in a medium and a large version; the medium is adequate as an everyday bag, but the large turns it into a versatile work/travel bag. It’s low-profile and has both smooth leather grab handles as well as a shoulder strap. I have kicked it under plane seats and around airports, and the nylon doesn't show any damage. There's a hidden separate compartment if you spill water on yourself, and it has sturdy feet so you can put it on an airplane bathroom counter and dig for your makeup without it falling over or getting the bottom of the bag too disgusting. The toothed zippers do tend to crinkle and snatch at your knuckles when the bag gets overstuffed, but I suppose you could always, uh, avoid overstuffing your bag.

★ Alternatives: We have plenty of recommendations in our guide to the Best Laptop Totes , but we love Lo & Sons. The Catalina Supreme Tote ($338) is also great for weekend trips. Again, there's also a bottom compartment for a pair of shoes, or anything else you need to keep separate.

Camelbak A.T.P. 2.0 Backpack

The Best Hiking Daypack

The Camelbak A.T.P. is so useful that I’m always startled to realize it only has a 20-liter capacity. I have it in the 100 percent recycled white color, which saves water and only emits half the greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating the dying process. It’s a panel loader, which means you can unzip the top and see exactly where everything goes, like a duffel. This is convenient when packing for trips—I was able to fit clothes, a Dopp kit, and electronics for an overnight trip. (I know these types of zippers fail more often than top loaders, but it does make it easier to arrange and sort items near the bottom of the pack.)

I particularly like how narrow it is. It fits my back and goes under airplane seats that even my children’s backpacks can’t. The bottle pocket has a zipper that makes it expandable so it can fit a little coffee thermos or my giant Yeti water bottle . Exterior compression straps also help squeeze my clothes even smaller. This is a great backpack if you want something that looks sleek enough for a work bag but is durable enough to take on a weekend trip to Yosemite.

★ Alternative: I also love the Patagonia Black Hole Backpack ($149) . This 25-liter bag is the perfect combination work/adventure bag. The suspended 15-inch laptop pocket clips shut, and the rest of the pockets are thoughtfully placed. It’s extremely light (a little over a pound) and is made from 100 percent recycled ripstop fabric.

REI CoOp Big Haul 40L duffel bag

Best Duffel Bag

The Big Haul ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) is our favorite duffel because it hits the right balance of robust build materials and pockets without being too heavy to lug around all day. The standout feature of the Big Haul series, which comes in 28-liter to 120-liter options, is the ability to easily reposition the carrying straps, which feature plastic fishhook-style ends that slip into fabric loops. You can connect one strap end-to-end or double up on two straps in an H pattern for more stability with heavy loads. Adding and removing the straps isn't super fast, but it's not difficult, either, and six low-profile loops seems less intrusive than six rattling plastic buckles.

Two small interior pockets and an exterior pocket keep small things organized, and its water-resistant fabric is thick and tough without being stiff. All the sewing around the grab handles feels very robust too. Padded backpack straps hide away under a padded pocket on the top of the bag. This means that when you sling the Big Haul over your shoulders to give your arms a rest, your back is against the relatively clean top of the duffel, rather than a wet, dirty bottom side that's been set down on the ground. The current iteration of the Big Haul is also made with recycled nylon. What's not to love? —Matt Jancer

★ Alternative: For slightly more money, the classic duffel in this category is the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel ($159) , which also comes in a variety of colorways and sizes. You can either carry it by the grab handles or with the shoulder straps, and it's made from 100 percent recycled polyester with a TPU-film laminate. I (Adrienne) have had the 40-liter version for almost 15 years now and the laminate has yet to peel. It also fits as a carry-on on flights.

Red Oxx travel bag

The Best Expedition Bag

If you like outdoor sports, you probably need a good expedition bag—that is, a huge, burly duffel that you can just throw all your pointy ice axes, trekking poles, or camp chairs into that you can take anywhere and everywhere. Reviewer Matt Jancer's expedition bag of choice is the Red Oxx PR5. He's used it for whitewater paddling trips and to lug mountain climbing equipment from coast to coast without a single frayed thread. Everything about Red Oxx is overbuilt. The zippers are huge, its thick pieces of nylon webbing are robustly sewn, and chunky metal rings hang the detachable carrying strap. All that said, it's not abominably heavy. At 3.4 pounds it's still lighter than many wheeled bags.

★ Alternative: If you've ever gone to a popular outdoor destination, like Yosemite or Everest, you've probably seen stacks of North Face Base Camp duffels . This is the quintessential expedition bag. My own personal bag is the OnSight Tarmac EPO , but the company no longer exists; I also have a Mountain Hardware duffel ($180) and after 20 years, the coating has finally started to peel.

Rux 70L storage box

Best for Camping

We love everything from Rux; I'm currently testing the waterproof adventure tote ($150) and I use it for everything from my climbing gear, to picnic gear, to bringing my kids' roller skates and soccer balls to the park. I have also leaked an entire water bottle in it and it stayed contained and out of the bottom of my car.

But for camping (or any outdoor pursuit, really), what you need is a Rux storage system , which, as the artist and filmmaker Van Neistat puts it, will help you kit your shit . It holds its frame shape, which means you can stack and organize inside of it just like a box, but it folds down like a bag for easy storage once you're at your destination. It's also light and waterproof and comes with a wide array of accessories . This is an upgrade for everyone who currently sorts their camping, climbing, or snowboarding gear in a series of $5 plastic totes and stacks them in their trunk.

The Frame CarryOn Max Aluminum Edition

The Best Aluminum Suitcase

Perhaps you've seen those Instagram-friendly, shiny aluminum suitcases and wonder whether it's worth the investment. Aluminum is extremely durable and can be machined with precision. That means it will protect your belongings better, and you can close them with latches instead of zippers. Your suitcase will last longer and be more secure— zippers are pretty easy to break into —and generally have fewer points of failure.

In my opinion, the cost-benefit analysis generally weighs against them. Aluminum suitcases are usually heavier and won't flex as much if you have overpacking tendencies, and I find them painfully conspicuous. Any suitcase with a decent warranty policy will painlessly cover any repairs. If you must have one, we like Arlo Skye's the Frame. Arlo Skye was founded by alumni from Louis Vuitton and Tumi, and reviewer Matt Jancer says that everything about the Frame screams robust quality, from the leather grab handles to the combination-lock latches. It also comes with a removable battery bank and has a few more liters of carrying capacity than the similarly-sized Away. The main disadvantage is that the interior organization is a bit lacking.

★ Alternative: Do you want the benefits of an aluminum suitcase without the drawbacks? You might want to consider Monos's Hybrid Carry-On ($325) . You won't fool anyone into thinking you've shelled out for a 100 percent aluminum suitcase, but Jancer notes that it's only a pound or so heavier than the competition and the aluminum frame offered better protection than any 100 percent polycarbonate suitcase that he tried.

Luka Duffel Bag

A Good Emergency Go Bag

To be clear, any bag here could be considered a go-bag—even a grocery bag works when you have to leave the house imminently. But reviewer Nena Farrell used Calpak's duffel for an emergency surgery, and she is kicking herself for not getting it sooner. It was big enough for everything from makeup bags and extra outfits to a massive book and Nintendo Switch, and was comfortable to carry thanks to the large straps.

The shoe compartment was big enough for sandals and slides, but not big enough for shoes with an ankle. It was also a great place to stash haphazard Ziplocs of emergency toiletries and medications. There are some side pockets inside too, plus an exterior side pocket and a pass-through panel to place it on top of your luggage. It was a great hospital companion, but Farrell can't wait to take the Luka somewhere a little more fun.

Other Bags We Like

Not every good product can snag a best-in-category title, but there are several more bags we've tested that get our thumbs-up.

Osprey Ozone 40L for $280 : At 4.47 pounds, Osprey claims this bag is the lightest carry-on suitcase. It's also made from 400D recycled bluesign-approved nylon and is treated with DWR. This bag is light enough to easily hoist above my head and has also been checked multiple times.

Gregory Alpaca 40 Duffel for $140 : This duffel weighs a scant 2.7 pounds, but the water-resistant fabric and extraordinarily beefy (though plastic) buckles make it a solid bag for adventuring. There's an exterior pocket for storing shoes or dirty clothes. The backpack straps don't tuck away for storage—you have to unclip them—but might be the most well-padded, comfortable straps I've encountered on a duffel. Exterior daisy chains and an interior zippered pocket round out the impressive features list.

Land's End Waxed Canvas Duffel for $180 : Most duffel bags these days are made of nylon, and while it's tough to call a material that's been popular since the 1940s “modern,” nylon bags don't have the old-school charm that this waxed canvas bag does.

Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L for $149 : This bag weighs 1 pound, 13 ounces, which is only slightly heavier than air. It also has backpack straps that stow away in a front pocket.

Skyway Epic Carry-On for $160 : At 7.1 pounds, the Epic is an average weight. The handle is a wee bit more finicky than our top pick, and the Travelpro's wheels glide a little more nicely. Still, the Epic is a solid choice.

Target Signature Weekender Bag for $81 : Looking like a cross between a duffel and a handbag, the Weekender has a structure that product reviewer Louryn Strampe says can become overfilled, so keep that in mind if you plan to bring it onto a plane as a carry-on. She appreciates its durability and the many internal pockets for organization, though, and its rather long five-year warranty.

Solgaard Carry-On Closet Plus for $345 : It's a tiny bit over what most airlines list as the maximum dimensions, but the difference is so small that it's accepted 95 percent of the time. WIRED reviewer Louryn Strampe praises its optional clip-in closet clothing organizer, which makes for efficient packing. The built-in TSA lock is easy to use, and there's an internal power-bank pocket. This suitcase is included in our Favorite Recycled Products guide.

Samsonite Outline Pro Carry-On for $200 : This is a hard-side, four-wheeled spinner carry-on made from an outer shell of durable polypropylene. Standout features include an interior fabric made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles and a “WetPak” storage pocket for keeping damp items separated from the rest of your luggage.

Adidas Defender Duffel for $40 : If you're looking for an inexpensive duffel that'll handle some light-duty traveling, this is a good way to save $100. The fabric is significantly thinner and less sturdy than that of other duffels in this guide, and it lacks backpack straps. But for taking on the train or tossing into a car trunk, it'll do the trick.

Eagle Creek Caldera Convertible Backpack

Bags We Don’t Like

Some bags just aren't worth the asking price, especially with so many good alternatives at all price points.

Peugeot Voyages Carry-On Spinner for $595 : What a price tag for a plastic-case suitcase. You can see where Peugeot tried to imbue the Voyages with some luxury, such as the metal riveting and built-in travel locks, but the case felt no more solid than a budget hard-sided bag, and the USB charging port felt cheap, like an outlet you'd find built into a seat in an airport terminal.

Eagle Creek Caldera Convertible International Carry-On for $469 : At 6 pounds, 2 ounces, this bag is a bit heavy. There's a zip-off 19-liter backpack that you can separate from the rest of the 37-liter bag, but when they're zipped together, the combined size doesn't meet carry-on restrictions.

Ebags CTS Carry-On Spinner for $200 : This one wasn't awful, but there are much better options for the money. Its hard plastic sides felt more brittle than the hard-sided plastic Away suitcases. The handle rattles a lot and it didn't roll quite as smoothly as other bags.

portable UrPower Clothes Steamer

A Few Travel Accessories

Once you've got your bag, you'll want to pack it with a few more useful items:

Apple AirTag for $24 : If you have an iPhone, it's one of the best ways to keep a digital eye on your bags. Drop an AirTag into an interior pocket to make sure you and your luggage are reunited at your destination. Don't have an iPhone? We suggest the Chipolo in our guide to the Best Bluetooth Trackers .

Eagle Creek Specter Pack-It Cubes Three-Pack for $35 keep everything inside your bags organized by allowing you to separate it into different cubes, so you won't ever have to hunt through seven pairs of socks to find your bathing suit again.

Calpak Clear Cosmetics Case for $75 : Calpak’s viral clear cases come in three sizes and a ton of colors for the edge trims. Reviewer Nena Farrell loved the small size for my gym bag and traveling with a smaller carry-on bag, while the medium was a great size for my daily makeup or larger suitcases.

Troubadour Buddy 2.0 Tech Case for $75 : You probably need a case to organize your spare charging cables and power banks. I've been testing this compact, waterproof, and recycled bag that fits neatly into my personal item.

UrPower Portable Steamer for $24 beats a travel iron because it's far lighter and you don't need to hunt down an ironing board at your hotel. WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano and I both have been using UrPowers for years. For a tiny thing, it's powerful and effective at steaming practically anything. You just need to refill it often.

Samsonite Manual Luggage Scale for $15 is handy when you're packing a heavy bag for an upcoming trip. Use it to weigh your luggage and make sure it's within the weight limits. International airlines are sticklers for carry-on weight, and even American airlines will be unforgiving about weight for checked bags.

InCase MacBook Sleeves for $50 will keep your laptop from bearing the damage caused by airport security lines. Travel through an airport without a case and it's only a matter of time before a bare laptop or tablet picks up nasty scratches and dents. Check our guide to the Best MacBook Accessories for more.

Carryon luggage in stowaway overhead container on airplane

How to Pick the Right Size Bag

Every airline sets its own dimensional requirements for carry-on baggage, so if you want to be safe, you should check your airline's requirements before packing. But broadly, they're split into two categories: domestic and international.

Domestic flights by US airlines (and a few others) have standardized on 22 x 14 x 9 inches.

International carry-on bag sizes tend to be about 21 inches tall and a bit narrower, but they're all over the place. It's tough, because many international airlines will measure your bags at the airport and reject anything even slightly bigger than the allowed size. If you fly outside the US a lot, you may as well buy a bag sized for international flights.

You'll also want to check each airline's weight limits. They vary wildly, but some international airlines restrict you to 15 or 20 pounds, including the weight of the bag itself. For example, there are some East Asian airlines that limit carry-on bags to 11 pounds. Once you subtract 6 or more pounds for the bag, you're not left with much wiggle room to put stuff inside.

USB cable plugged into removable battery bank on luggage

When to Remove Battery Banks

Battery banks, also known as power banks, are a travel must-have. Whether you're using a tablet to watch movies on your flight or relying on your phone to coordinate rideshares, hotel check-in, and handle your boarding passes, you've got to keep those devices charged and topped up. Many bags offer a removable battery bank that slides into a special pocket or notch of the suitcase.

For carry-on luggage on a flight in the US, you're allowed to bring a lithium-ion battery of 100 watt-hours or less. You don't need to remove it from the suitcase's pocket if you're storing your bag in the overhead bin.

Lithium-ion battery banks are not allowed in checked luggage. If you check your bag or have to gate-check it, make sure to remove the battery bank before you give your suitcase to the gate agent. Slip the battery bank into your purse, backpack, or pocket for the duration of the flight.

Shopping for new luggage? Two suitcase brands you’re likely considering include Samsonite and Travelpro . Both are reputable companies whose bags have recently landed at the top of SmarterTravel’s Editors’ Choice Awards for the best carry-on (Travelpro took first place in 2019 , while Samsonite topped the list in 2018 ). But when comparing Travelpro vs. Samsonite, which one is the best fit for you?

The answer depends on your specific luggage needs. Below we compare the two brands in a variety of categories including features, price, warranty, and more.

Editor’s note: In addition to comparing other luggage styles and features, our editor tested the Platinum Elite 21″ Expandable Carry-On Spinner and the Platinum Elite 25″ Expandable Spinner from Travelpro and the Voltage DLX 20″ Spinner and the Armage 19″ Spinner from Samsonite. All listed prices were accurate at the time of publication.

Samsonite’s Claim to Fame

samsung travel suitcase

Samsonite is one of the world’s most venerable travel brands, having been founded more than 100 years ago in Denver, Colorado. It started as a maker of sturdy wooden trunks for world travelers and now offers a wide range of suitcases and other travel accessories.

Travelpro’s Claim to Fame

samsung travel suitcase

Travelpro may not have been around quite as long as Samsonite, but its launch made a splash when its founder, pilot Bob Plath, designed the world’s first rollaboard suitcase in the late 1980s. He first sold the new design to pilots and flight attendants before making it available to the flying public, and the company’s bags are still popular with flight crews today.

Travelpro vs. Samsonite: Design and Features

samsung travel suitcase

Winner: Both companies offer a range of durable, attractive suitcases as well as backpacks, packing organizers, totes, and more. If you’re a fan of softside suitcases, we give the slight edge to Travelpro for its sleek, clean designs, most of which coordinate well with each other—so it’s easy to buy a checked bag, a carry-on, and a personal item that look good together. For hardside fans, Samsonite’s greater selection of colors, patterns, and styles gets our vote.

Both companies incorporate innovative features into many of their bags such as TSA-approved locks, USB-charging ports, and built-in organizers.

One thing to watch out for when shopping for a bag you can fly with: Both Samsonite and Travelpro sell quite a few “carry-ons” that don’t fit the standard carry-on size limit on most U.S. airlines (22 by 14 by 9 inches). Out of 59 bags that show up under the “carry-on” category, just 13 are displayed after you click on Samsonite’s fits 22″ x 14″ x 9″ filter .

There’s no such filter on Travelpro’s website, so I manually clicked through every bag listing and found only six out of 26 total carry-ons that fit this common size requirement. One that doesn’t, the popular Platinum Elite 21″ Expandable Carry-On Spinner , says on its label that it’s “size bin tested,” and it’s close enough to the limit that you may never be questioned by an airline about it—but it’s worth keeping in mind when selecting a bag. Remember: Airlines count wheels and handles in their size limits, not just the measurements of the case itself.

Carry-on and Personal Item Size Limits for 32 Major Airlines

Travelpro vs. Samsonite: Versatility

samsung travel suitcase

Winner: Samsonite comes out ahead here with a much larger collection of suitcases overall, including ultra-lightweight options—such as the Black Label Cosmolite 3.0 20″ Spinner , weighing a measly 3.7 pounds—and an eco-friendly line made of recycled plastic bottles. In particular, fans of hardside luggage will have a lot more choices when shopping at Samsonite; Travelpro’s website currently lists only eight hardside pieces of any size, while Samsonite has more than 100.

However, Travelpro does have a handful of collections that cater to different types of travelers, including the affordable and lightweight Maxlite 5 line , the Crew Versapack collection (which works with optional zip-in organizers to keep your suitcase in order), and the elegantly designed Platinum Elite line .

Warranty and Return Policies

Winner: The edge goes to Travelpro in this category thanks to its generous 100-day trial period : “If your Travelpro luggage fails to meet your expectations for any reason, you may return it for a full refund within 100 days, no questions asked. We’ll even pay the return shipping.” (Note that you won’t be refunded the shipping cost on your initial order, and that this guarantee only applies to purchases made on the Travelpro website. Purchases made on other sites such as Amazon or eBags are subject to the return policies on those sites.)

Samsonite allows returns within 30 days and does not reimburse the cost of shipping in either direction.

When it comes to warranties, both companies have multiple versions depending on which product you buy. In general, they will cover defects in materials or workmanship either for a certain number of years (three to 10) or over the life of the bag. You can read Samsonite’s warranty policy here and Travelpro’s warranty policy here .

7 Things Not to Do When Packing a Carry-on Bag

Travelpro vs. Samsonite: Price

Winner: It’s impossible to choose a winner in this category, as prices range widely depending on the type of suitcase and the features you’ve chosen. Samsonite has options from inexpensive to exorbitant and everywhere in between, while Travelpro’s prices are clustered more in the middle of the pack—so the winner really depends on how much you’re looking to spend.

Samsonite’s carry-on bags range in price from $80 to $550; Travelpro’s carry-ons cost $90 to $320. For checked bags, there’s an even bigger spread: Samsonite’s cheapest starts at $120, while its most expensive is $700. Meanwhile, Travelpro’s checked bags range from $180 to $400. (Note that these prices include single bags only, not luggage sets.)

Overall Winner: Samsonite

While both luggage brands make high-quality products, we give the slight edge to Samsonite due to its breadth of offerings at a wide variety of price points—with plenty of choice for travelers who prefer hardside or softside suitcases.

Flying with a smart suitcase: Every major airline's travel policy

christina-darby-headshot

Peak travel season is upon us, which means everyone must fulfill their tasks of packing enough clothes to wear, ensuring that all the essential tech gadgets are accompanied by the right charger, and praying that everything comes together in luggage that's  just shy of the weight limit.

Perhaps that luggage comes in the form of a smart suitcase , one that strives to make the travel experience easier with high-tech capabilities like built-in wireless chargers , electronic locks, and even GPS tracking .

Also:  Flying soon? This is a must-have iOS app for air travel

But despite how convenient and practical smart luggage can be, airlines have become more strict about what pieces of travel gear are allowed and not allowed. This guide explains what counts as a smart suitcase and what every major airline's policy is when you're traveling with one.

What is a smart suitcase?

Usually a hard-shelled bag, smart suitcases have built-in electronic capabilities that often include USB charging ports, smart locks, GPS tracking capabilities, Wi-Fi and hotspot connectivity, and even scales. The exact features vary from bag to bag, but they all have the goal of making traveling -- especially if you're a tech-heavy user -- easy. Smart suitcases come in both carry-on and checked luggage sizes.

ZDNET Recommends: Apple AirTag

Are smart suitcases allowed on planes.

This depends on whether or not you can remove the battery from the smart luggage. Since 2013, the  Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prohibits  spare lithium batteries in checked luggage from being stored in an aircraft's cargo unit. That means that most smart suitcases, which are powered by lithium-ion batteries, are deemed fire hazards and not allowed.

However, most airlines only apply restrictions to checked luggage with non-removable lithium batteries. If you can remove the lithium battery from the bag or just have a carry-on smart bag, you shouldn't have problems flying with it.

Also:  12 gift ideas for travelers this holiday season

And now, here's a list of the five most popular airlines and their respective travel policies that you should know before traveling:

Can I travel with smart luggage on American Airlines?

The first to put restrictions on smart luggage,  American Airlines and its affiliate American Eagle regional airlines  still require that "If you are traveling with a smart bag, the battery must be removable in the event the bag needs to be checked."

Can I travel with smart luggage on Southwest Airlines?

Effective as of Jan. 15, 2018,  Southwest Airlines  states that "If the smart bag is in the cabin of the aircraft, the removable battery is to remain installed." In other words, you can bring along any smart luggage, as long as it has a removable battery. But Southwest makes it clear that if the bag is to be checked at any time, including if you have to check your carry-on at the gate, the customer must remove the battery first before boarding.

Can I travel with smart luggage on United Airlines?

United Airlines only allows smart bags that have  removable lithium batteries . The airline also asks that you take out the battery before checking the bag.

Can I travel with smart luggage on Delta Airlines?

Also effective as of Jan. 15, 2018,  Delta  only lets you check and carry on smart bags with removable lithium batteries. Its guidelines also note that smart bags with a motor -- as cool as they are for drifting through airports -- are prohibited.

Can I travel with smart luggage on JetBlue?

You can fly with smart luggage on JetBlue as long as the lithium battery is removed from the bag and is safely stored in the cabin.

Why buy smart luggage?

Smart luggage has built-in technology like smart locks, GPS tracking, and even personal hotspots that can make packing and traveling easier.

Why did airlines ban smart luggage?

Airlines didn't completely ban all smart luggage. For the safety of passengers, most airlines just require any smart luggage to have removable lithium-ion batteries.

Are suitcases with chargers allowed on planes?

Suitcases with chargers are allowed on planes as long as the battery is removable. For example, if your luggage comes with an external battery bank, you'll want to eject it before turning the baggage in.

This ultra-thin power bank I tested is a must-have travel gadget (and it's surprisingly cheap)

Traveling next week i can't live without these 5 gadgets when i jet set, the best travel vpns: expert tested.

Keep your luggage trackable with Galaxy SmartTag

Leisure travel is making a comeback after the pandemic. So are potential lost luggage nightmares. The last thing you would want is for a missing baggage to ruin your long-awaited holiday. So, keep tabs on your bags with Galaxy SmartTag! Galaxy SmartTag is a portable tracker that allows you to keep track of your belongings at all times, even when you’re offline. Lightweight and easily attachable, simply pack it into your luggage or secure it on your bags and never worry about losing them again.

samsung travel suitcase

Thanks to Galaxy SmartTag, finding lost items is smart and simple.

Here’s how to connect your SmartTag to your smartphone or tablet:

First, install the SmartThings app and ensure that it’s updated to the latest version. Open the SmartThings app on your phone or tablet. Press the (a) button on your SmartTag to activate it. A window will appear on your phone or tablet. Tap Add Now . Follow the on-screen instructions to finish setting up your SmartTag.

Travel lighter with Samsung Pay

Travelling is easier when you’re travelling light. For a start, ditch your bulky wallets by storing your debit and credit cards on Samsung Pay. Access all your cards on a single device, and enjoy a seamless and secure payment experience almost anywhere with just a tap. No more fumbling through your wallets at the counter and making yourself a possible target for pickpockets!

You’re one step away from Samsung Pay:

First, ensure your device software is updated to the Android™ 10. Search for Samsung Pay in the App drawer of your device. Click on the Samsung Pay icon. You will be prompted to download and install the full version of Samsung Pay app. Launch the Samsung Pay app and sign in with your Samsung Account.

To add a card on Samsung Pay:

Tap Menu (the three horizontal lines) in the top left corner, and then Cards . Next, tap Add card ; it looks like a credit card with a plus sign next to it. Then, tap Add credit/debit card. Follow the instructions to register your card. When you add a card, you must agree to the card's terms and conditions.

Share Internet access with Mobile Hotspot

No Wi-Fi? No fear! Turn on Mobile Hotspot on your Galaxy smartphone or tablet to share Internet access across devices. You can even adjust multiple settings to keep your hotspot private or turned off when it’s not in use. Staying connected is that easy!

Before you activate Mobile Hotspot, here are some points to note:

  • You must have a tethering plan on your service account.
  • Mobile hotspots consume battery power and use data service.
  • While a mobile hotspot is active, your device's apps will use the mobile hotspot's data service.
  • Roaming while using your phone or tablet as a hotspot may incur extra data charges.
  • Activating a mobile hotspot will disable Wi-Fi.
  • Only LTE tablets can create hotspots, not regular tablets.

Now, you’re ready to activate Mobile Hotspot:

First, go to Settings . Tap Connections , then Mobile Hotspot and Tethering . Tap the switch next to Mobile Hotspot . When you'd like to turn off Mobile Hotspot, tap the switch again.

Make the most out of your battery life and data

This is probably your first trip in a while and of course, you would want to capture every second of it. Do not let a flat battery or a maxed out data limit ruin the moment. Be sure to operate on power saving mode and kill any unused apps running in the background–you’d be surprised at how much battery they drain. Download content before you set off so you do not end up wasting battery and data to download them on the go. Finally, search for offline versions of frequently-used apps. For one, Google Maps allows you to download maps that can still guide you to your location even when you are offline.

Travelling is faster, easier and safer when you know your tech. Have these tech tips in mind and you’re all set for your trip!

NBC Select Travel Awards 2024: The best hardshell and softshell suitcases

Away and Bagsmart are just a couple of the brands that made our list of the best suitcases to shop.

At NBC Select, we spend hours researching, testing and reviewing products so that you can be more selective and informed about the things you buy. For our first-ever NBC Select Travel Awards, we spent months thoroughly testing travel gear covering various categories.

We traveled across the globe to Tokyo with hardshell suitcases and packing cubes , commuting to and from our New York City office with weekenders and duffel bags and tried toiletry bags , noise-canceling headphones and more.

After all of our testing, we collected thoughtful feedback for every product. After sifting through all editors’ reviews, we found the products deserving of the Travel Award winner’s stamp of approval.

Below, we rounded up the best hardshell and softshell suitcases, plus information about how we evaluated each product.

How we picked the best hardshell and softshell suitcases.

Arguably one of the most important types of bags you’ll take with you on a long-haul trip, a great hardshell and softshell suitcase should be durable, spacious, easy to maneuver and able to hold up well against scratches, scuffs and potential damage (especially if you regularly check in your bags).

  • Durability: Overall, we wanted to see that once the bag was fully packed, it was easy to pull and roll around on various surfaces, including carpet, tile and pavement. We also wanted to see if the fully packed suitcases held their shape well with items like clothes and shoes inside. Plus, it was important to ensure that the suitcases held up well against elements such as water or accidental spills.
  • Maneuverability: Similar to durability, we prioritized maneuverability in the hardshell softshell suitcases we tested. We wanted to ensure the handles weren’t flimsy or prone to breaking, especially after pulling and handling the bag for hours. Additionally, we wanted to make sure the suitcases were relatively easy for the average person to lift and carry if they plan on using them as carry-ons.
  • Spaciousness: We wanted to make sure the suitcases we awarded had sufficient room to hold common articles of clothing such as t-shirts, pants, shorts, underwear, and certain types of shoes. Ideally, the bag would hold at least a few days' worth of outfits. We also wanted to make sure they were compatible with packing cubes, which help to keep belongings more organized.

Best hardshell suitcases

Best overall hardshell suitcase: away the bigger carry-on.

Away The Bigger Carry-On

Away The Bigger Carry-On

Away’s The Bigger Carry-On is the best overall hardshell suitcase because it delivered when it came to all of our testing criteria. This Away suitcase, as the name implies, is a subtly larger version of the brand’s standard carry-on suitcase. The bag can fit multiple packing cubes and has ample room for clothing, toiletries and shoes. It also comes with a small bag for storing dirty laundry.

Additionally, it comes with a TSA-approved lock, which NBC Select associate reporter Bianca Alvarez found useful during her travel testing.  “I loved using this carry-on and was able to pack roughly around 10 days worth of clothes with the help of packing cubes,” she says. “I also thought that the inside features were convenient.” Aside from space for clothing, it also has straps and buckles, which help flatten and secure the items in the bag, which makes it easier to close. The handle is easy to adjust and the wheels roll smoothly and handle various surfaces well, whether upright or at an angle.

Best lightweight hardshell suitcase: Quince 21” Carry-On

Quince 21” Carry-On

Quince 21” Carry-On

During our testing, we found that the Quince 21” Carry-On balances durability and maneuverability well. While the suitcase keeps belongings safe and secure, it’s also easy to lift and place in an overhead compartment or into the trunk of a car, especially when it is fully packed. NBC Select associate updates editor Zoe Malin tested the bag and loved how well it handled different terrain. “I dragged this bag through the streets of New York, on multiple flights, checked and not checked, and dragged it up flights of stairs and it looks great,” she says. While the bag is prone to some scrapes (the case with many hardshell bags), it comes with a small sponge to help wipe scuffs away.

Best budget hardshell suitcase: Bagsmart Carry-On

Bagsmart Carry-On

Bagsmart Carry-On

The Bagsmart Carry-On can hold a surprisingly large amount given its size, according to NBC Select managing editor Leah Ginsberg, who tested the bag. “I was really impressed by this carry-on. Its dimensions are smaller than the average carry-on,” she says. “But it held a lot of things and the quality is good for the price.” The suitcase is slightly smaller than the standard carry-on size for most major airlines but that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice space for storing clothing or other travel items. It also has 360-degree wheels, an adjustable handle with four heights, TSA-approved locks on the zippers, multiple compartments for organizing clothes and an expandable zipper on the side.

Best softshell suitcases

Best overall: thule subterra 2 carry-on spinner.

Thule Subterra 2 Carry-On Spinner

Thule Subterra 2 Carry-On Spinner

Thule’s Subterra 2 suitcase is the perfect softshell carry-on for your travel needs, whether you’re using it for a quick trip or taking it on a long-haul vacation. Former NBC Select editorial operations manager Shari Uyehara says that while testing the bag, it “helped make traveling a lot easier” — she loves its sleek, stylish design, and how well it’s held up after multiple trips. It’s made from a polycarbonate shell and a durable nylon/polyester blend that’s designed to be water-resistant and to withstand the impact of travel wear and tear, according to the brand.

The suitcase also includes an easily-accessible removable panel that compresses your clothes to maximize packing space, which Uyehara says she loves most of all. “I love how spacious it is and that it can easily hold all of my items,” she says. She also says that, compared to other carry-on suitcases she’s tried, this one is lightweight and very easy to wheel around.

Best lightweight: Calpak Luka Soft Sided Carry-On

Calpak Luka Soft Sided Carry-On

Calpak Luka Soft Sided Carry-On

Malin, who’s never used soft-shell luggage before, says that this suitcase is “ideal to use for a short trip”, because of its spacious yet lightweight design. When testing the suitcase for a weekend trip, Malin says she fit three full day outfits, three pairs of pajamas and three workout outfits inside of the suitcase’s main compartment, plus underwear, bras and socks.

It’s made from Calpak’s puffy, polyester Luka material, which the brand says is designed to withstand travel — the flexible material also makes it easier to close (and overstuff, according to Malin). The carry-on also has 360-degree spinner wheels and two front pockets with a padded laptop compartment, which Malin says is her favorite part of the bag. “The sleeve makes it really easy to take my laptop out, which would be super helpful if I was going through security at the airport,” she says. Malin says she can store extras like her resistance bands and Bala bangles in the larger part of the pocket, and it’s an easy bag to wipe clean.

Travel + Leisure / David Hattan

Losing luggage before (or after) a trip can put a damper on any experience. While there is no way to prevent airlines from misplacing your luggage, using a luggage tracker is one of the best travel hacks for making the process easier if your suitcase doesn’t make it on a flight.

To recommend the best luggage trackers on the market, we tested eight different devices from trusted tech brands. After flying with all of the luggage trackers, we chose the top three trackers that were effortless to set up, accurately located our luggage, and were extremely useful for offering peace of mind while traveling. Our top pick might surprise you, so keep reading to learn more about what qualities we looked for in a luggage tag.

Best Overall

Eufy smarttrack link.

  • Ease of Setup 5 /5
  • Accuracy 5 /5
  • Functionality 5 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5

It pairs seamlessly with an iPhone and costs much less than AirTags.

The locator sound on the device could be louder.

Eufy’s luggage tracker edged out the popular Apple AirTags during testing by impressing us with the same (if not slightly better) features at a much lower price point. The device came ready to go and all we had to do was open the Find My app on an iPhone and the tracker automatically connected for hassle-free setup. Throughout our four-month tests, we used the tracker on eight different flights and every time we could see that our luggage was on the airplane before take-off, providing peace of mind en route to our final destination. In between trips, we simply left the tracker in the suitcase, so it was ready for our next adventure.

The device itself is thin and small, but not too small that it could get lost easily, so you can feel safe using it in a wallet or purse on a trip. One of our favorite traits is the hole in the upper corner that can be directly attached to a keychain or lanyard to keep track of car or house keys instead. Plus, the tracker is water-resistant and didn’t get damaged during travels, even after we tucked it into the bottom of a 50-pound checked suitcase.

Best for Everyday Use

Apple airtag.

  • Accuracy 2.5 /5
  • Functionality 4 /5
  • Design 5 /5

The device is about the size and weight of a quarter, which makes it easy to use to track all types of items.

Over the course of our four-month tests, we did have issues with location accuracy as the AirTag can lose connection quite easily.

The small size of an Apple AirTag is ideal for keeping track of your items without noticing the device is tucked away. Since the tags are about the size of a quarter, they can fit in a suitcase, purse, or wallet with ease, and the metal material feels particularly durable compared to the other plastic models we tried. Made by Apple, the device pairs to an iPhone within seconds and is tracked via the Find My app, where users can also change the name of the device if there is more than one. With the popularity of AirTags , there are tons of compatible accessories (beyond placing them in luggage), including passport covers, wallets, keychains, and wristbands for kids. The biggest downside we experienced with the AirTag is that it didn’t accurately provide the location of the luggage and it spooked us several times with messages saying that luggage was left behind while we were taxiing on the tarmac. Although the AirTag wasn’t our top pick, we still think it’s an excellent option to help prevent lost bags .

The Details: 1.6 x 1.6 x 0.31 inches | Replaceable lithium coin batteries | No subscription fee | iOS compatible only

Best Subscription

Tile pro bluetooth tracker.

  • Ease of Setup 4.5 /5
  • Accuracy 4 /5

You can use this device to track items for free, but the paid subscription offers worthwhile features for some travelers.

The device requires the Tile app and it wasn’t very intuitive to navigate for setup — even after four months of testing, we found the separate app to be annoying.

The Tile Pro Bluetooth Tracker offers the same basic functionality as the other devices we tried, including the ability to see the location of the device on an app. However, frequent fliers will appreciate the ability to upgrade the features of this device by getting one of the two premium plans offered by Tile that cost $30 or $100 per year depending on the plan (you can get the first year for free when you purchase the tracker through Tile). The premium subscription comes with smart alerts to tell you when the device isn’t in range, 30-day location history, and reimbursement for lost items that Tile can’t track with options for $100 or $1,000 reimbursement for either the premium or premium protection plan.

For travelers who just want to use the Tile tracker as is, we were impressed with the durable and functional design of the plastic fob. It comes with a hole in it so you can use it for keys and wallets along with luggage, too. We had some slight issues setting up the device with the Tile app, but once we started messing around with it, it got easier to navigate over time.

The Details: 2.32 x 1.32 x 0.3 inches | Replaceable lithium metal batteries | Subscription fee | Android, iOS, and Smart Home compatible | Water-resistant

Best for Android Users

Samsung galaxy smarttag2.

It's easy to use and comes with a keychain that you can attach to just about any item.

The button is quite sensitive, so you may accidentally trigger the alarm if it's in a bag, purse, or pocket.

For Android users who are looking for a luggage tracker than can be used while on vacation and for everyday needs, the latest SmartTag from Samsung is a great choice. While it does require an app to use, the set-up process was easy and intuitive. Plus, there is no subscription required to use the SmartTag2 and the battery lasts over 500 days, so you really don't need to think of the device often after you attach it to your suitcase, purse, bag, or keys.

Throughout our tests, the device was very accurate for tracking location and it never lost connection. It's also small and lightweight, so you can easily attach it to just about any item you may want to track. The SmartTag also comes with a case and keychain for extra durability and convenience.

The Details: 2.06 x 1.13 x 0.31 inches | Replaceable lithium metal batteries | Android | Water-resistant

Other Luggage Trackers We Liked

The luggage tracker highlighted below didn’t quite make the cut, but we’re giving it an honorable mention after a solid performance in testing.

Dynotag Brushed Stainless Steel Smart Tag : This luggage tag isn’t technically a tracker since there isn’t a feature to locate the device, but if someone found it, the QR code would easily put them into contact with the owner of the luggage.

To test eight luggage trackers, we traveled with every device in a checked bag over the course of four months to see how well each one performed based on ease of use, functionality, accuracy, and design. We also tested some of the trackers for everyday use to keep track of wallets, keychains, and headphones.

First, we set up each device according to the instructions (or lack thereof) to see how easy or difficult it was to get started. After setting up the devices, we placed them in checked luggage and flew to various destinations, including routes with multiple layovers, to ensure our luggage made it onto the flights. In the end, our favorite luggage trackers were simple and intuitive to set up, accurately displayed the location of the item, and had a sleek and functional design meant for tracking luggage and other items while traveling.

Tips for Buying a Luggage Tracker

Make sure it’s compatible with your device.

The tricky thing about buying a luggage tracker is that not all of them are compatible with all operating systems. In general, most trackers can connect with just iOS or Android, but there are a few options that can connect with both. It’s almost always listed in the specifications section of the product so you’ll want to double-check before purchasing a tracker, especially if you plan on gifting it to someone .

Consider where and how you’ll be using it

Tracking devices are ideal for luggage, but they can also work well for keys, wallets, passports, purses, and more whether you’re on the road or at home. For travelers looking for a tracking device for wallets and passports, we recommend the Apple AirTag since there are tons of travel accessories made to hold the device and they are also slim enough to fit anywhere. For keys or AirPods, consider getting a tag with a hole designed for attaching the device to keychains or rings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Luggage trackers use Bluetooth and GPS signaling to relay the location of the device back to a phone or tablet. Even if you’re thousands of miles away, the tracker can usually display a location on a map on your device, which is particularly useful if your luggage gets lost in transit .

Although luggage trackers often have lithium batteries, they are still allowed in checked and carry-on bags. The FAA doesn’t allow rechargeable lithium batteries with more than 100 watt hours per battery, but, luckily, tracking devices have less than that.

4 Best Luggage Trackers for Travel, Tested and Reviewed

Here’s to, presumably, never losing your luggage again.

Headshot of Christine Flammia

With all the tracking devices being pumped out, many of them do well in keeping track of bags. Putting one in your travel bag is both an insurance policy against forgetful brains and evidence in the case against your airline. Here we have the four trackers that after testing performed best. They're small and lightweight, have long-lasting batteries, and are easy to use. The right one for you might depend on the phone you have or other tiny details (like how splash-proof it is).

AirTag

Best Luggage Tracker for iPhone Users

Apple airtag.

Galaxy SmartTag2

Best Luggage Tracker for Android Users

Samsung galaxy smarttag2.

Black Pro

Best Multiuse Luggage Tracker

Tile black pro.

Here's to, presumably, never losing your luggage again. Or at least getting your rightful money back if an airline "misplaces" your bags.

An Apple AirTag is a reliable, easy-to-use tracker that is about the size of a coin. If you're an iPhone user (6s and later), it's easy to keep track of using the Find My app. It makes for an easy transition because you don't have to use yet another app or service to use the tag. It's pretty inexpensive, and you can take it out of your luggage to track anything else you need, like your wallet or keys when you're not in travel mode. Buy in a single or a pack of four.

The only issue is that AirTags rely on other Apple devices to be found, requiring at least one iPhone within 30 meters to geo-locate itself. So if your luggage gets lost in a country where iPhones are not commonly used, you could have a tough time.

Fret not, Android users. Samsung made a Galaxy SmartTag2, an upgrade to its old version, that works seamlessly with your phone, too. It connects to your SmartThings Find app, which doesn't necessarily have the same strength as Apple's Find My, but that's not really the tag's fault. The SmartTag is water- and dust-resistant, with a long battery life of up to 500 days—plus a power-saving mode to make it last longer. It'll send out an audible beep when you ping it, although some reviewers note random beeping even when you're not trying to locate it.

One of the best parts, though, is the Lost Mode activation, which can send notifications to someone's phone (Android or otherwise) that's near your tag, giving them your contact information for a safe luggage return.

This bigger-sized Tile Pro is a great option for any kind of phone user and is great at tracking luggage, among other things. It has a solid 400-foot range and beeps when you're trying to locate it. Although you're only able to see its whereabouts when you're connected to the Tile through Bluetooth, there's also an option for trying to find tagged luggage that's out of your range. The "Notify When Found" mode can send you alerts if it passes through someone else's Tile range. Though, of course, that means you'd have to have lost your Tile-tagged luggage near someone else who also has a Tile. It's useful but not bulletproof.

Chipolo BUNDLE

BUNDLE

Chipolo's smart-tracking bundle is great for multiple bags or tracking multiple travelers. This set comes with both its Card and One devices. The Card is super thin and fits well into wallets, passport cases, and other tiny organization pockets, but its battery is not replaceable. The One chips have a longer battery life (two years versus one), and those batteries can be replaced. They both have a decent 200-foot range and are splash-proof. So they'll be fine if they get caught in the rain, but don't try dunking them in water. Any phone that can download the Chipolo app and connect to Bluetooth can make use of these, but that does mean you'll have to get yet another app.

shape, rectangle

I was truly heartbroken when I realized, after three loving years of use, the Tile Mate I kept on my keys was dead. And that it would stay dead. These were great for what they did—keep track of my ever-disappearing keys and beep to let me know where in my bag I had lost them—but the non-replaceable battery was devastating enough for me to not repurchase this exact kind.

Common FAQs

shape, rectangle

How do luggage trackers work?

These trackers all use Bluetooth to connect to your phone, which makes use of either built-in location apps like Find My and SmartThings Find or its own proprietary app.

How long do luggage trackers last?

Here we prioritized trackers that have both long-lasting batteries and replaceable ones. That said, it depends. Most last at least a year, while some can last longer than two.

How We Picked the Best Luggage Trackers

These luggage trackers all connect to your phone, and so the ones that keep a strong Bluetooth connection and don't require too much additional app navigation came out on top. There's also the big phone differences: Apple works well with Apple devices, and so does Samsung with Samsung. Still, we know not everyone wants to be forced into a branded box like that.

Why Trust Esquire

Because of our collective obsession with smart traveling , great luggage , and efficient packing , we are also in the business of keeping that stuff safe. And we will indeed fall apart if our precious vacation outfits disappear, so you bet we will be tracking their whereabouts at all times.

Because no one loves a lost bag.

All of these TSA-approved luggage trackers are sure to put your mind at ease as you embark on domestic or international travel, since their Bluetooth connection tracks your bags and you can follow their location on your device. Some of these luggage trackers are made just for Apple devices and others are for Android devices, some come with a subscription and others do not. Here, the best luggage trackers to buy now.

This compact tag is super easy to set up and connect to an iPhone. It will guide you to its location on a piece of luggage (or whatever you might misplace). You can also track it on Apple's Find My app network as long as it's within Bluetooth range. Order key rings or holder cases for your tags in fun colors to make them easy to locate within your luggage.

Testers say: "After going on an international trip where my bags didn't make it on my connecting flight, I decided to invest in an Airtag. I'll never travel without one in my bag again. I can track my bag's location right from my phone. It's a lifesaver!"

About this luggage tracker:

The Tile Pro functions similarly to an Apple AirTag but is compatible with both Apple and Android devices. With its premium subscription service, you'll get added features like smart alerts when your tag is out of range and a 30-day location history. Tile also sells other similar luggage tracker models: Tile Mate is smaller than Tile Pro and more similar in size to the Apple AirTag, and Tile Slim is the shape of a credit card.

Reviewers say: "Last year I traveled to Vegas and [had several connecting flights]. I just wanted peace of mind while I traveled and to know where my luggage was at all times just in case my luggage did not show up. Each time we stopped and switched planes, I would check and it would ping at the exact location. They worked well, and it was easy to set up."

For Samsung users, this tracker is easy to set up with an app and connect to your device, and its design easily attaches to a keychain or bag. The main drawback is it can only be used with Samsung devices. Add one of Samsung's silicone cases in a fun color to keep it protected (and stylish too).

Reviewers say: "Getting on the plane for Bali, Indonesia, I could see that my bags [were] stowed away. Upon arrival, I could see my bags had also arrived. It was such a relief...I would highly recommend this product for your luggage. On your next trip, fly worry free."

Where should I put my luggage tracker?

gold line

Your luggage tracker will be more secure inside your bag than attached to the outside, and the signal works just as well enclosed in your suitcase. To find it easily, place it inside a side zipped compartment instead of in the main storage area, or attach it to a strap with a loop or cord on the tracker.

What should you look for in a luggage tracker?

icon

  • Make sure the tracker is compatible with your mobile device: Some trackers are only meant to use for Apple devices like iPhones, while others are meant for Android devices. Choose one that's compatible with your phone type, otherwise it may not work.
  • Check the battery life: Luggage trackers' batteries eventually need to be recharged or replaced, so make sure that yours has a long battery life and is fully charged before you travel.

If you're interested in purchasing Briggs & Riley luggage, go to Valley Fair and head to Stern's. The salesperson, Nadira is knowledgeable, provides insight and quality service. I purchased two B&R bags this year. I have an old B&R carry-on that is still my all-time favorite bag. She told me to bring it in to have it repair for free. You pay for the shipping. Before you purchase a high-end luggage, you need to check-out your options, roll it around and preview all the extra features. Hopefully, Nadira is working that day!

As soon as I left he went back and stood behind the register. I am in clear view if he remained at the register. Every step I took he followed me until I left. Basically he made me feel as if I was going to shop lift something.

Everything is overpriced and everything is marked on sale. When everything is on sale that means everything is overpriced. Why must luggage stores be like shopping for used cars.

If I have option, I would like to give this store 0 star. The staff took away the suite case since he think we cannot afford it. He wants us to make promise to buy it if offering a good deal. But the price is not reasonable. *The other store sells the same one and it is $ 65 cheaper.

I was eyeing the Briggs and Riley Baseline International Carry-On for a while, and they had recently brought back the Navy collection. I walked in the store just to "take a look," but loved how the suitcase looked and felt in person. The gentleman helping me, whose name might have been Jeremy (or not), was patient in explaining the differences between a couple of the brands. More notably the Briggs and Riley, Rimowa, and Tumi. They didn't have the navy in stock, but he was able to order it and I got a call from him to pick it up 2 days later just in time for my business trip. They're very professional and I didn't feel like they were trying to "sell" me as you do with a lot of businesses that have a very specific product. I was told I could also bring in my luggage any time I need a repair done since Briggs and Riley has a lifetime warranty, and they will ship it out for me and take care of everything. That's a plus if it's ever needed. Aside from the service and experience I had, they have a large selection of brands and luggages.

1st class operation run by the manager Ryan. I came in there looking for an adapter/outlet for my trip to Buenas Ares Arginitina I had an old one and he tried it out and said it worked fine. Did NOT try and sell me a newer model. Honest folks work at Stern's

Had the best experience at this store Was shopping around for just a carry on and came across this shop First of all the store itself was very well displayed with an incredible selection The customer service was fantastic The sales person that helped me (Cheki) was extremely helpful .She was very knowledgeable and helped me find the bag that fitted my needs It's very rare nowadays to find great products AND great service at the same time Bottle line if you're looking for some great quality luggage at a great price along with great service this is the place to go

My advice is to think twice before purchasing anything from this location. The sales people here treated me like a king before I bought a product, but afterward the service was horrendous. My horror story began November 27th during a shopping run for the holidays. I bought this particular backpack as a gift, and I was under the impression that return was available up until Jan 31st (like most items are bought during holiday season). As it turned out, my friend later discovers that the product is defective, with broken seems at the base of the strap! I expected the return to be quick and painless. Boy was I wrong. At first the sales rep refuses the return saying that it has been more than 60 days since the purchase date. Wait a minute... I look at the receipt and clearly it's been only 49 days, which means I should still have 11 days for return. He then switches up his story and retaliates by accusing ME of mishandling the product, saying "We don't know what you did with it.". I even offered to accept store credit, but he continued to blame me for the defective product. However, the story doesn't just end there. The next day I came back to see the head manager, and he accuses me of "threatening his employees". This is simply not true. I was unhappy about the way I was brushed off and accused of misusing the product, which I'm sure my friend did not misuse. However, at NO point did I threaten anyone in any way! It was a complete fabrication. I did not raise my voice, I simply kept my cool and told him that he was doing the wrong thing. To be honest, I was surprised at how calm I was because he was obviously trying to discredit me with malicious intent. So, in the end, not only was I sold a defective product, I was accused of misusing the product, and even accused of threatening their employees! What kind of people would do this right after the holidays? Given my experience with the management at this store location, I will not be surprised if they continue to come up with lies to try and discredit me, but these are my experiences and I have told them honestly. The store manager's name is Jarrod Taylor. While I have nothing against him personally, I do believe he has cheated me by selling me a defective product. Moreover, he has stained my impression of the Briggs and Riley brand irreparably. I still hope that he will have the decency to do the right thing and give me my money back for a defective product so that I can get my friend the present he deserves, a quality working product.

Wonderful experience shopping here and I'm loving my Rimowa rolling bag and Briggs & Riley carryon. Bought both (after thinking about it for months) in about 15 minutes, and Jarrod shipped them at no charge to my home in Utah. Rimowa rolls beautifully through the airports; the Briggs & Riley is much roomier than the Eagle Creek Tarmac I've carried and loved for years. Will continue to shop here! Thank you!
